00:00:00There's no sell-by date on that sort of thing.
00:00:03What they wrote was timeless because it was authentic.
00:00:07It's the kind of show I wish was on the air right now.
00:00:12Whenever you find it on TV, it makes me stop.
00:00:15And every joke is still just as funny.
00:00:17And this murderer's row of a cast.
00:00:20Ray, what's somebody you wanted in your home?
00:00:22You wanted to be part of that family.
00:00:26I believe in 20, 30, 40, 50 more years.
00:00:30We'll still love Everybody Loves Raymond.
00:00:31The writing and the acting, directing, that was near perfect, my God.
00:00:36And it's in color.
00:00:43Thank you very much.
00:01:44Don't make me cry yet.
00:01:45There's going to be a lot of that.
00:01:47Let me just tell you something.
00:01:48The reason we're doing this is because of the fans.
00:01:51I mean, I miss it.
00:01:53I miss everything.
00:01:53I miss you people.
00:01:55I miss the cast.
00:01:57My real wife is backstage with my TV wife.
00:02:00Yes.
00:02:01If you've been married for a long time, folks, you know, there's a lot of ups and downs.
00:02:05And this is an example of how long we've been married.
00:02:08The other day, she actually said to me, you know, you don't talk a lot.
00:02:12But when you do, it's too much.
00:02:19We're going to have a great night.
00:02:21I'm so glad you're here.
00:02:22Who came from, like, far away?
00:02:24Who's from the...
00:02:24Where are you from?
00:02:25Philippines.
00:02:26I watched you when I was, like, seven or eight.
00:02:28In the Philippines?
00:02:29Yes.
00:02:29But, of course, dubbed in.
00:02:31No.
00:02:32I learned English from...
00:02:33You learned English from me.
00:02:39Well, I appreciate it.
00:02:44But thank you very much.
00:02:46Listen, before we go even further, I want to bring out a man who's been my partner in this
00:02:51venture, in this journey for the last 30 years.
00:02:54He's the reason that this show exists, but this was his baby, just like it was mine.
00:03:01Please welcome Phil Rosenthal.
00:03:16How great is this?
00:03:19This is amazing.
00:03:20You learned how to speak English from Ray Romano?
00:03:22So were your first English words...
00:03:25Oh, no!
00:03:29First of all, let's get one thing out of the way.
00:03:31This, I'm sure you will know, is a reunion.
00:03:34This is a reunion that we...
00:03:36Not a reboot.
00:03:36We're never going to do one because we're missing three cast members, three family members,
00:03:42so we would never try to do the show without them.
00:03:44It wouldn't be the same.
00:03:45No.
00:03:45And we have too much respect for the show itself and for the beautiful audience...
00:03:50Right.
00:03:50...to keep it the way it is.
00:03:51And thankfully, the show is still on every day all over the world, which...
00:03:57Right.
00:03:59If you want to visit your friends, we're here.
00:04:03How did we meet?
00:04:05Well, I was in bed.
00:04:08And I was watching David Letterman with my wife.
00:04:11This would have been 1995?
00:04:1395.
00:04:14We had a production company, and we were always looking for a funny project.
00:04:21And I think we were all pretty greedy when we saw Ray.
00:04:25Our, uh, ladies and gentlemen, next guest is a very funny comedian, uh, making his first appearance with us tonight.
00:04:31He can also be seen...
00:04:32Wow, I just, uh, looked like a mid-level mortuary has gotten a hold of me.
00:04:36Do me a favor now.
00:04:37Please, a nice welcome for Ray Romano.
00:04:39Ray!
00:04:43My first impression, he's wearing his father's suit.
00:04:46But that's fine.
00:04:47I'm gonna let that go.
00:04:48I have a three-year-old daughter and twin two-year-old boys.
00:04:53Wow.
00:04:57Single people are here.
00:05:01I can make them laugh.
00:05:02I can make an infant laugh in a second.
00:05:03I'll tell you, I'm losing my perspective on adult humor.
00:05:06I wrote one new joke since my twins were born.
00:05:09Here, is this funny?
00:05:10What do you think it is?
00:05:12Hi!
00:05:14Hi, everybody!
00:05:15That rings true with me.
00:05:18I had no idea how to be a parent, so I thought, if I can make the kid laugh, I've done something.
00:05:25I'm glad.
00:05:25I'm glad you laughed.
00:05:26If you didn't laugh at that, I would have had to come and rub my nose in your bellies.
00:05:31Yeah.
00:05:33Ray is the guy, and let's go, and before he gets in the cab, let's get him to sign something.
00:05:39And I think it was a combination of his likability and the quality of the material.
00:05:44I thought, you know, pretty run-of-the-mill topics, but the quality of the jokes in those
00:05:49topics, I thought, were superior.
00:05:52It was just dumb luck that we had anything to do with it.
00:05:55It's like, you know, kids playing with fireworks.
00:05:59Oh, geez, it actually exploded.
00:06:01It was sort of like that.
00:06:03That's why we're here.
00:06:13A week later, they called me and said, we'd like to sign you to a deal to try to produce
00:06:19a sitcom.
00:06:20Right.
00:06:20And then, I had to go find a guy to write it and run it.
00:06:27Did you?
00:06:30So, they set us up on a blind date here in L.A. at Arts Deli on Ventura Boulevard, and we
00:06:36meet.
00:06:37And I say to Ray, you know, tell me about yourself, just like I would with any of you, if we were
00:06:41going to work together, but we didn't know each other.
00:06:43So, tell me about yourself.
00:06:44And you said, well, I got twin boys and an older daughter, and my parents live close
00:06:49by in Queens.
00:06:50You got to do the voice?
00:06:51You got to do the voice?
00:06:51A little bit.
00:06:52Yeah, okay.
00:06:52And then, my older brother's a police sergeant.
00:06:56He lives with them.
00:06:57He's always touching every bite of food to his gym before he eats it, and he's kind of
00:07:01jealous of me.
00:07:01He saw my stand-up comedy award, and he said, never ends for Raymond.
00:07:05Everybody loves Raymond.
00:07:07And do you remember what I said?
00:07:10You said, well, I don't think there's anything there.
00:07:14Jokingly.
00:07:17I thought that was a very good place to start, and what I didn't know about the personalities
00:07:21in Ray's family, I filled in with the personalities from my family.
00:07:26Ninety percent of everything you saw on the show happened to me or to Ray or to one of
00:07:31the other writers.
00:07:34What are you doing?
00:07:35The show had premiered, and Ray said to his wife, Anna, my show just premiered in front
00:07:43of all these people.
00:07:44And she said, yeah.
00:07:46And I just cleaned plum off the ceiling from the kids.
00:07:49I think this show means everything to us.
00:07:53It got to capture our family, Ray's family, everybody who worked here, their families.
00:08:00It was just like a community, you know?
00:08:02We became a community.
00:08:03We all felt so safe here and welcomed.
00:08:05I remember my dad would, he'd come out right before the show, he'd greet the audience.
00:08:11He always would bring me up, say hello.
00:08:13He'd do the same joke with the audience about having twins.
00:08:16Like, here's Matt.
00:08:17I have another son.
00:08:19If he was here, it looked like this, and then I'd go behind him and stand on that side.
00:08:23There's one episode based on a real thing that I did, which is when I was in first grade.
00:08:27We all had to write books, you know, little picture books.
00:08:31My book was The Angry Family.
00:08:38All the parents came in to read it, and, you know, they were all looking at my parents.
00:08:44Mommy was mad at the daddy.
00:08:49He got an episode out of it.
00:08:52Yeah, the Ray on the show is the Ray at home, and that is because at home, he does a lot of
00:08:58annoying things that drive me crazy.
00:08:59I think if I were to do an impression, it's just a little bit deeper, like, grunt.
00:09:05Like, I don't know.
00:09:07People do the grunt, right?
00:09:08Ugh.
00:09:08Ah, come on.
00:09:09My back is here.
00:09:11It's a little, ugh.
00:09:12Okay, now it's even worse.
00:09:14Now it's even worse.
00:09:15Deborah.
00:09:15Who brought the cookies here?
00:09:17Who brought the donuts?
00:09:18All right, I'm just going to eat one.
00:09:19Oh, my God.
00:09:20It's so good.
00:09:21Five minutes later.
00:09:23Oh, my stomach hurts.
00:09:24Allie, why'd you do that?
00:09:26Oh, damn that.
00:09:27Oh, no.
00:09:28Deborah.
00:09:28Yep, there it went again.
00:09:31I think one of the things that put it over the top, where CBS had to decide whether to
00:09:38put us on, was something out of your actual life, which was...
00:09:42When I'm writing a pilot, I'm thinking, how do we convey exactly, in a short amount of
00:09:47time, how crazy Ray's parents are?
00:09:50And then this happened to me, where I sent my parents, I thought I was being nice, a gift
00:09:57of Fruit of the Month Club.
00:10:01Look, I appreciate the thought, Raymond, but please, don't ever send us any more food again,
00:10:05okay?
00:10:06Thanks.
00:10:06Thanks, Doug.
00:10:07Well, another box is coming next month.
00:10:10What?
00:10:11More pears?
00:10:12No.
00:10:13No, it's a different fruit every month.
00:10:16Every month?
00:10:16Yes, yes.
00:10:18That's why they call it Fruit of the Month Club.
00:10:20It's a club?
00:10:21Oh, my God.
00:10:22What am I going to do with all this fruit?
00:10:23Well, most people like it, Ma.
00:10:25You share it.
00:10:26Share it with all your friends.
00:10:27Which friends?
00:10:28I don't know.
00:10:29Lee and Stan.
00:10:30Lee and Stan buy their own fruit.
00:10:31Oh, my God.
00:10:33Why did you throw this to me?
00:10:36I can't talk to Stuart's fruit in the house.
00:10:39What do you think we are, invalids?
00:10:42We can't go out and get our own fruit.
00:10:45I'm trying to tell them.
00:10:46All right.
00:10:47I'm canceling the Fruit Club.
00:10:49Oh, good.
00:10:49Thank you, Raymond.
00:10:51And don't do that again.
00:10:53Like we don't have enough problems.
00:10:54What I didn't realize and what I learned from doing that,
00:11:05from us doing that,
00:11:07oh, wait, your parents are all crazy, too.
00:11:10Yes.
00:11:11We get it all the time.
00:11:12People from all over parts of the world tell us,
00:11:15that's my mother.
00:11:15That's my father.
00:11:17We didn't know your mother.
00:11:18We were writing our mother.
00:11:19And we have so many favorite episodes,
00:11:21some of the ones we're going to talk about tonight.
00:11:23I have one that just came to mind,
00:11:25and it's good since we're starting.
00:11:27You know, we did a flashback episode
00:11:28at the end of every season,
00:11:30and this was my favorite
00:11:32because it's how they met,
00:11:34meaning Ray and Debra.
00:11:36You know, it looks like I made too much food here
00:11:38if you're hungry.
00:11:41Oh.
00:11:42Yeah?
00:11:43Yeah, you want some?
00:11:45All right, yeah.
00:11:46Wrap it up.
00:11:46I'll eat it in the truck.
00:11:52Can I ask you something?
00:11:54Yeah, sure.
00:11:56Were you making all that food for someone
00:11:59and they didn't show up?
00:12:02They showed up.
00:12:05Hey, you want something to drink?
00:12:07Yeah, yeah.
00:12:07Well, let me get that.
00:12:08Okay, the glasses are right there.
00:12:09Okay.
00:12:10Price?
00:12:11Yeah.
00:12:11That'd be great.
00:12:12I like the round cubes
00:12:29with the holes in them.
00:12:30Those are my favorite kind of cubes.
00:12:31Are you okay?
00:12:38Yeah, I'm fine.
00:12:39Ah, you all right?
00:12:41Yeah.
00:12:46You're a good kisser.
00:12:48All right, you're in shock.
00:12:50You're both so great in that,
00:12:56and it's just so sweet to me
00:12:58in addition to being funny.
00:12:59The flashback episodes were always...
00:13:01So fun.
00:13:02...fun to do.
00:13:03Look, I like all the episodes,
00:13:04but of course there's some we like more than others.
00:13:07And I have like a top five,
00:13:09and the one off the top of my head
00:13:11is called Talk to Your Daughter.
00:13:13So Talk to Your Daughter is about
00:13:15at some point having to have the talk
00:13:19with your child
00:13:21about the birds and the bees, you know?
00:13:24When a man and a woman
00:13:25love each other very much,
00:13:27they get married.
00:13:29And then sometimes
00:13:31they decide to make a baby.
00:13:34I know that the man and the woman
00:13:35have to do something,
00:13:37but why are we born?
00:13:39Why has God put us here?
00:13:41Why are we here, Daddy?
00:13:59Yeah, I heard you.
00:14:00I heard you.
00:14:03You don't want to talk about sex?
00:14:08What do you mean?
00:14:08I don't even want to talk about sex.
00:14:10She started asking questions about life.
00:14:12Why did God put us here?
00:14:13Crazy stuff like that.
00:14:16Wow.
00:14:17So what did you say?
00:14:18I told her we're here
00:14:18because heaven is crowded.
00:14:23You said heaven is crowded.
00:14:24I got ambushed!
00:14:26If you want to know what's in the Bible,
00:14:28why don't you talk to Father Hubley?
00:14:30Hey, that's right.
00:14:31You know what?
00:14:31It's his job to know these things.
00:14:33What, are you going to call him?
00:14:35Yeah.
00:14:35What are we putting the money
00:14:36in that basket for?
00:14:37Me and the family were just sitting around
00:14:40and we had a quick question for you.
00:14:43What is the meaning of life?
00:14:47So if you could get back to us
00:14:48as soon as possible,
00:14:49we'd appreciate it, all right?
00:14:50I'd hate to admit it,
00:14:57but I'm guilty of...
00:14:58What?
00:14:59I didn't have that talk with my kids.
00:15:01Now I have 19 grandchildren.
00:15:05All right,
00:15:05they don't want to hear
00:15:06two old guys talk.
00:15:07They don't?
00:15:08Should we bring out
00:15:09some people for you?
00:15:10Yes, yes.
00:15:11Yeah.
00:15:13Let's do that.
00:15:15We'll do it right away.
00:15:16When I got married,
00:15:24I didn't just get a husband.
00:15:25I got a whole freak show
00:15:27that set up their tent
00:15:28right across the street.
00:15:30Oh, you were open
00:15:32and considerate
00:15:33and willing to look
00:15:33at your own faults.
00:15:34You made me sick.
00:15:36Ray.
00:15:37Ray.
00:15:37Ray.
00:15:38Ray.
00:15:38Hello, Raymond.
00:15:39I do not have
00:15:41a drinking problem, sir.
00:15:42What I have
00:15:43is a mother-in-law problem.
00:15:45No.
00:15:51No.
00:15:52No.
00:15:52We're going to counseling.
00:15:53No!
00:15:54You meant what I said here today.
00:15:55I love you!
00:15:56I'm pregnant!
00:15:57I am not the yeller.
00:15:58You are the reason
00:15:59for the yeller!
00:16:00I have no idea
00:16:01what I have to put up with.
00:16:08Ladies and gentlemen,
00:16:10Patricia Heaton.
00:16:12Patty!
00:16:12Patty!
00:16:15Look at these two.
00:16:32I'm so happy.
00:16:33Do you know,
00:16:34I didn't say this,
00:16:35we saw 200 women
00:16:37before we found Patty Heaton.
00:16:40200.
00:16:41And when she came in,
00:16:43she just knocked it
00:16:44out of the park.
00:16:45I mean,
00:16:45you can talk about
00:16:46what that day was like.
00:16:48Well,
00:16:48I was going through,
00:16:50and I think
00:16:51why the show worked,
00:16:52we were all going through
00:16:53what the Barone family
00:16:54was going through
00:16:55in our lives.
00:16:56We all had kids.
00:16:56Yes.
00:16:56We all were newly married.
00:16:58Yes.
00:16:58And I had a three-year-old
00:17:00and a one-year-old
00:17:01in my life.
00:17:02Right.
00:17:03I had a babysitting issue
00:17:05when I was coming
00:17:06to the audition.
00:17:06I needed to get back.
00:17:08I was cutting out coupons
00:17:09for 50 cents
00:17:10off two packs
00:17:11of Ballpark Franks.
00:17:13And so I needed the gig.
00:17:16And I got there,
00:17:17and there was a waiting room
00:17:17of at least eight women.
00:17:19And I thought,
00:17:19I'm never going to get back
00:17:20in time for the babysitter.
00:17:21And so I went in
00:17:23and sat there,
00:17:24and I just needed
00:17:25to get this audition done.
00:17:27And there was a guy
00:17:28sitting in the corner,
00:17:29and I thought,
00:17:29maybe he can get me
00:17:30some water while we're
00:17:31waiting for Ray to come.
00:17:33It was him.
00:17:34And I didn't really
00:17:35have to do research,
00:17:35and I didn't really
00:17:36have to do acting,
00:17:37because it was what
00:17:38we were all dealing
00:17:39with in our marriages.
00:17:40And so, fortunately,
00:17:42we got to monetize that.
00:17:44Yes.
00:17:44Yes.
00:17:45You were living the role.
00:17:46You were living the role.
00:17:48You know,
00:17:48when I need to talk to Ray
00:17:49about, like, my feelings
00:17:51or our children,
00:17:52I know I have until
00:17:53the commercial's over.
00:17:54That gives me 30 seconds.
00:17:56And if there's a girl
00:17:57in the commercial
00:17:58or a truck with big wheels
00:18:00or, God forbid,
00:18:01a monkey, forget it.
00:18:03I think it was the first
00:18:04show I'd worked on.
00:18:05I'd worked for a while
00:18:05on TV that really encouraged
00:18:07us to bring in
00:18:08our stories from home.
00:18:09Phil in the writer's room
00:18:10only half-jokingly said,
00:18:12all right,
00:18:13we need two more stories.
00:18:13Anybody having a fight
00:18:14with their spouse?
00:18:16Phil's idea
00:18:16when he was running the show
00:18:18was, how can you write
00:18:19about real life
00:18:19if you can't live one?
00:18:21There's an episode
00:18:22of Raymond called
00:18:22The 10th Anniversary
00:18:23where Ray and Debra
00:18:24put in the VHS tape
00:18:25of their wedding
00:18:26on their 10th anniversary.
00:18:29Oh.
00:18:32And discovered that
00:18:33he's taped over
00:18:34with a Super Bowl.
00:18:38I did that.
00:18:40It was my first anniversary.
00:18:41We put in our VHS tape
00:18:43and discovered
00:18:44that I had taped over
00:18:45our wedding
00:18:46with an episode
00:18:46of Everybody Loves Raymond.
00:18:47Where did our wedding go?
00:18:55It's just like
00:18:56the stories seem authentic.
00:18:57And whether it's
00:18:58more exaggerated
00:18:58than maybe it would have
00:18:59happened in real life,
00:19:00like that kernel of truth,
00:19:01I think, comes through.
00:19:03Well, 10 years,
00:19:04that's enough.
00:19:09It was such a pleasure
00:19:11to write
00:19:12for both of you.
00:19:14And there was
00:19:15one other
00:19:15that was...
00:19:19Phil's getting emotional.
00:19:20A little bit.
00:19:20Because it's a dream
00:19:22to wind up
00:19:23with people like this.
00:19:25If you're just a writer,
00:19:26you pray for someone
00:19:27to come along
00:19:28and give so much more
00:19:30beyond it
00:19:31and to make it real.
00:19:33My favorite thing
00:19:34about the cast
00:19:35was how they all committed
00:19:37to the most
00:19:39silly thing
00:19:41as if it was
00:19:42life and death.
00:19:43And that made it
00:19:44so alive
00:19:45and real
00:19:47and relatable.
00:19:48And the two of you
00:19:49had the most
00:19:50spectacular chemistry.
00:19:51And I always said
00:19:52that Patty Heaton's
00:19:53the best wife
00:19:53on television.
00:19:54Aww.
00:19:55Well, we're also...
00:20:00We're...
00:20:02I think we're forgetting
00:20:03one little key element
00:20:05that really sold me
00:20:06on you
00:20:06during that first audition.
00:20:09That's how desperate
00:20:10I was to get the job.
00:20:11Yeah.
00:20:11Well, they don't know
00:20:12what you're talking about.
00:20:13I kissed him.
00:20:13Yes, there was...
00:20:15There was a part
00:20:16where it says
00:20:17she kisses her husband
00:20:18and every other actress
00:20:20just kind of mimed it
00:20:22for some reason
00:20:23she did it.
00:20:24Nobody else...
00:20:26And when she walked out,
00:20:27I go,
00:20:28that's the one!
00:20:30Patty,
00:20:31do you have
00:20:31a favorite episode?
00:20:33Yes.
00:20:34There was the one
00:20:35where we went away
00:20:37for a weekend
00:20:38and we put the suitcase
00:20:40on the landing.
00:20:42We put it there
00:20:42and neither of us
00:20:44would take it up
00:20:45and empty it
00:20:46and we keep waiting
00:20:47for the other person
00:20:47to do it.
00:20:49What are you doing?
00:20:51What?
00:20:53Just packing a soda
00:20:54for the road.
00:20:55Problem?
00:20:57That's how you're getting
00:20:58on the airplane.
00:20:59Yeah.
00:20:59Yeah, I'm traveling light.
00:21:01I'm traveling loose.
00:21:02What are you,
00:21:05a hobo?
00:21:09Why don't you
00:21:10take the suitcase?
00:21:11You know what?
00:21:12I don't need it.
00:21:16Okay, you know what?
00:21:20Oh.
00:21:23Yeah, good.
00:21:25You know what?
00:21:26I'm getting it.
00:21:28Well, what's that
00:21:28supposed to mean?
00:21:30It means
00:21:31I'll get it.
00:21:33I'll be the one
00:21:34who got it.
00:21:36Oh, no, no, no,
00:21:38no, no.
00:21:40I will get it.
00:21:41Let the record show
00:21:42that I got it.
00:21:43You let go of it.
00:21:44You let go of it.
00:21:45You let go of it.
00:21:47Let go of it.
00:21:49Let go of it.
00:21:50Let go of it.
00:21:50Let go of it.
00:21:51Let go of it.
00:21:52Let go of it.
00:21:53I'll take it out of here.
00:21:54No, you don't.
00:21:55No, you don't.
00:21:56I've done it.
00:21:57Don't.
00:21:57No.
00:21:58I'm moving it.
00:21:59I don't care.
00:22:00I want it.
00:22:00I don't know
00:22:01what's moving it,
00:22:02everybody.
00:22:02Look at me.
00:22:04Don't let a suitcase
00:22:05filled with cheese
00:22:06be your big fork and spoon.
00:22:08This is all your fault.
00:22:34When did we get those?
00:22:36That's one of my favorite lines
00:22:42ever in the show
00:22:43because that to me
00:22:44is marriage,
00:22:45especially a long marriage.
00:22:46Yes.
00:22:47So many people,
00:22:48and this is really,
00:22:50I think,
00:22:51what's not important
00:22:53about comedy,
00:22:54but every month at least,
00:22:56if not every week,
00:22:57somebody either
00:22:58on social media
00:23:00or if I run into them
00:23:01says,
00:23:01your show
00:23:02was the one thing
00:23:04that our family
00:23:05could laugh together
00:23:06when my father was sick
00:23:07and it was his favorite thing
00:23:09that's been going on
00:23:10for 30 years
00:23:11and so,
00:23:12you know,
00:23:12it just feels like
00:23:13you're able to do that.
00:23:16That's beautiful.
00:23:19We needed to catch
00:23:20Ray's brother.
00:23:22Should we bring him out soon?
00:23:23Trouble in paradise?
00:23:36Why would you want
00:23:37to hear me complain
00:23:37about Ray?
00:23:41Perhaps we haven't met.
00:23:43I'm Robert Barone.
00:23:45Hey, hey.
00:23:46Hey, Robert.
00:23:48Everybody loves Ray.
00:23:50Surprise,
00:23:51it's an iguana.
00:23:52I need to say something.
00:24:06No wife,
00:24:08no children.
00:24:09Pathetic.
00:24:13Thanks for the kind words.
00:24:17Brad Garrett, everybody.
00:24:22I'll come around.
00:24:32I'll come around.
00:24:33I'll come around.
00:24:38Phillip.
00:24:39Hey.
00:24:40Oh.
00:24:43I'm going to the jail.
00:24:45Oh, boy.
00:24:47Ray, it is so great
00:24:50to meet you.
00:24:54Do you have any memories
00:24:55of coming in
00:24:56and meeting Ray?
00:24:57I remember auditioning
00:24:59when I read
00:25:00who Robert was.
00:25:01I just felt
00:25:02I knew this guy,
00:25:03you know?
00:25:04I was the youngest
00:25:05of three brothers
00:25:06growing up
00:25:07and they were,
00:25:08you know,
00:25:09much more popular
00:25:11and they had a lot
00:25:12more going for them
00:25:13and I kind of felt
00:25:14like the kid
00:25:14that grew up
00:25:15under the sink,
00:25:16you know?
00:25:17So,
00:25:18when I read it,
00:25:19I kind of felt
00:25:19like I knew
00:25:20who Robert was,
00:25:22you know?
00:25:23Yes, Ray.
00:25:24Um,
00:25:25how could you...
00:25:26You have to raise your hand.
00:25:27It's your show.
00:25:27How could you fit
00:25:32under the sink?
00:25:33Well...
00:25:34We would write lines,
00:25:37jokes,
00:25:38and sometimes
00:25:39we didn't need them.
00:25:41Why?
00:25:41Because when we would cut
00:25:42to a face,
00:25:44they already said it
00:25:45with their look
00:25:46and it was better
00:25:47than anything
00:25:48we could write
00:25:49and the king of this
00:25:50was Brad.
00:25:52Yes.
00:25:52That's very sweet.
00:25:53Just beautiful.
00:25:54Any, uh,
00:25:54lovely stories
00:25:55you have
00:25:56from your days
00:25:57on the show?
00:25:58Not really.
00:25:59No?
00:26:01Many.
00:26:02You know what
00:26:02I think of a lot
00:26:03is the episode
00:26:05She's the One
00:26:05where, uh,
00:26:07the girl I was dating
00:26:08ate the fly.
00:26:09Oh, yes.
00:26:11And when you tried
00:26:12to tell me
00:26:13what you saw
00:26:14in the kitchen,
00:26:15that scene
00:26:16was so great,
00:26:18but there was
00:26:18a moment
00:26:19where you were...
00:26:20Yeah,
00:26:20I almost passed out.
00:26:22Tell me,
00:26:22you were screaming
00:26:23or you had a...
00:26:24Well, I saw her
00:26:25eat the fly
00:26:26and then you come in
00:26:28and you talk to Patty
00:26:29and say,
00:26:29I really think
00:26:30she's the one.
00:26:31And I say,
00:26:32she's not the one.
00:26:33Right?
00:26:33And I tell you
00:26:35she ate the fly,
00:26:35you don't believe me
00:26:36and I tell the story
00:26:37and again,
00:26:37all this pent up
00:26:38and finally I end with
00:26:39she took the fly,
00:26:40she put it in the...
00:26:41And then I scream it,
00:26:42she ate it!
00:26:44And I hyperventilate it
00:26:46and if you look
00:26:46very closely,
00:26:47you see me go,
00:26:48ooh, ooh,
00:26:49because I almost,
00:26:49I felt like
00:26:50I was going to pass out.
00:26:52Who hyperventilates
00:26:53saying a line?
00:26:54Hey, you got him!
00:27:01Yeah, I guess I did.
00:27:02Wow, good hands.
00:27:05All right, um...
00:27:05Oh, it's okay.
00:27:06I got it.
00:27:07Okay, I'll be...
00:27:07I'll put this down.
00:27:08I'll be...
00:27:08The fly
00:27:30that was flying around,
00:27:32Angela killed it,
00:27:34it fell on the table,
00:27:35she put it in a napkin
00:27:37and then she ate it!
00:27:41Oh, yeah.
00:27:52Commitment!
00:27:54Brad, do you...
00:27:54Was that your favorite
00:27:55or do you have a favorite?
00:27:57Boy, there's so many.
00:27:58I really loved Lucky Suit
00:28:01where Robert
00:28:04has an interview
00:28:05to work with the FBI.
00:28:07So, as I was saying...
00:28:08Is this a joke?
00:28:11Excuse me?
00:28:12Dear FBI agent Garfield,
00:28:14I'm writing to ask
00:28:15for your understanding.
00:28:17You have an interview
00:28:17this morning
00:28:18with my son,
00:28:19Robert Barone.
00:28:36Oh!
00:28:41Robbie, you scared me!
00:28:42How did your interview go?
00:28:51Come here,
00:28:51let me tell you about it.
00:28:55Didn't it go well?
00:28:57Oh, it was going okay.
00:28:59And then Agent Garfield
00:29:00read me a letter
00:29:01about Crazy Robert
00:29:02and his Lucky Suit.
00:29:05Mom, what did you do?
00:29:07She faxed the FBI
00:29:08a letter
00:29:08about how she ruined
00:29:09my Lucky Suit.
00:29:10I wasn't sure
00:29:11it went through.
00:29:12It was the first time
00:29:12I ever used
00:29:13a fax machine.
00:29:16Marie,
00:29:16why don't you go
00:29:17into the kitchen
00:29:18and Robert,
00:29:19how about you
00:29:19just stay here
00:29:20and maybe blink
00:29:21a few times?
00:29:28So, Mother's Day,
00:29:29this is a good story.
00:29:32After one of my shows,
00:29:34this guy came up to me
00:29:35after the show
00:29:36and it was really amazing.
00:29:39He was a veteran
00:29:41and I remember
00:29:42that Phil,
00:29:44you and Ray
00:29:46would always send
00:29:47the DVDs
00:29:49to our troops
00:29:50when the show
00:29:51was on the air
00:29:52and he gave me
00:29:54his retirement
00:29:55challenge coin
00:29:57and he served
00:29:58from 1999
00:30:00to 2020
00:30:03and he said,
00:30:05you guys really helped
00:30:06when we needed
00:30:07the humor
00:30:07more than anything
00:30:09and it really kept
00:30:11us buoyant
00:30:12in what we were
00:30:14going through
00:30:15every day.
00:30:16And, yeah.
00:30:19Yeah.
00:30:21It's an honor
00:30:21to be on this bus
00:30:23and thanks for
00:30:24letting me on
00:30:24even though
00:30:25I was a giant.
00:30:27There's more people
00:30:28coming out.
00:30:29We'll be right back,
00:30:30I guess.
00:30:30to be on the range
00:30:37point.
00:30:37Bye.
00:30:39This is something,
00:30:49huh?
00:30:50Yeah,
00:30:51something.
00:30:53Something.
00:30:54it's on the
00:31:24And it still has the dent from where I picked Patty up and threw her into the thing.
00:31:32Very good.
00:31:34So there was someone else in that scene that I knew for a long time before we did the show.
00:31:40I saw her first in a play, and I thought she was really funny.
00:31:44And then I married that girl.
00:31:46I might not be the best person to help.
00:31:48I've spent the last ten years looking for an engagement ring.
00:31:51Oh, Robert, this is my friend Amy. We used to work at the PR firm together.
00:31:55Hi.
00:31:56Hi, Ray.
00:31:56Here we go.
00:31:58Oh, look, this one looks like a heart.
00:32:00Get up your crying and get off your pity pot, Nancy.
00:32:05God, I keep forgetting what a freak show this family is until somebody new comes in and looks at us like that.
00:32:16Wait.
00:32:21Did your mother come over and make things worse as usual?
00:32:33Here's Monica.
00:32:35Monica.
00:32:35Yes!
00:32:39Yes!
00:32:44Wow!
00:32:45I'll do a hug.
00:32:45Boys.
00:32:46I'll do a hug.
00:32:47I'll do a hug.
00:32:47I'll do a hug.
00:32:47I'll do a hug.
00:32:47I'll do a hug.
00:32:47I'll do a hug.
00:32:47I'll do a hug.
00:32:47I'll do a hug.
00:32:48I'll do a hug.
00:32:49I'll do a hug.
00:32:50I'll do a hug.
00:32:51I'll do a hug.
00:32:52I'll do a hug.
00:32:53Hello, my darling.
00:32:54My darling.
00:32:55Oh.
00:32:56Hello.
00:32:57Oh.
00:32:58Oh, my God.
00:32:59Relax.
00:33:00Relax.
00:33:01Woo!
00:33:02Hi, Monica.
00:33:03Hi.
00:33:04You can tell Monica brought a slightly different energy to the family, right?
00:33:07Yes.
00:33:08You know, just being here is so incredible, right?
00:33:10I can't believe how everyone did the set.
00:33:13Yeah.
00:33:14Everybody backstage and you guys being here, it's so overwhelming.
00:33:19It's unbelievable.
00:33:20Talk about, what about, because first you were recurring, right?
00:33:24Yes.
00:33:25Well, first I didn't even know I'd be recurring.
00:33:27Can I tell you a little something?
00:33:28Yes.
00:33:29I was pregnant with our daughter, Lily, and I didn't know it.
00:33:33I found out after, so that first...
00:33:35Wait.
00:33:36I didn't know that.
00:33:37Yes.
00:33:38And then, you know, you can flash forward to, she just got married.
00:33:39And she just got married, Liz.
00:33:40She just got married.
00:33:41Oh, Lily, Lily got married.
00:33:42Yeah.
00:33:43Oh, we have a lot of babies on this show.
00:33:47A lot of babies.
00:33:48The moral is, this show made us horny.
00:33:52We were happy.
00:33:53When did you officially know you were a regular?
00:33:59It just started building and building and building, and the Robert and Amy, it really
00:34:04was, you know, I've had only a couple comedy partners in my life, but this one, and that
00:34:10writing to this couple was so perfect, wasn't it?
00:34:13It was great.
00:34:14It was great.
00:34:15It was so fun, and it was to then be with, like, one of the greatest comic teams of all
00:34:21time, Ray and Debra.
00:34:23That's you guys.
00:34:25Yeah, you were brilliant.
00:34:26So it was really lucky.
00:34:28Do you have a favorite episode?
00:34:29Oh, yeah.
00:34:30All of them you mentioned.
00:34:31There's so many favorite episodes.
00:34:33The one that captures my heart is because of my dear, beloved Georgia, who I was very
00:34:38close with, the Georgia Angle, who played my mom, and it's Pat's Secret.
00:34:43Oh.
00:34:44Hi.
00:34:46Is everything all right?
00:34:49What, can't sleep?
00:34:51Yeah, me neither.
00:34:53Mind if I bum a ciggy?
00:35:08Robert was smoking.
00:35:09I wasn't.
00:35:10I wasn't.
00:35:11Smell him.
00:35:12Come here.
00:35:13Come here.
00:35:14Oh, my God.
00:35:15Yeah.
00:35:16Do you know what he's been doing?
00:35:17Smell him.
00:35:18Smell him.
00:35:19Smell him.
00:35:20It wasn't lying.
00:35:21It was more like she was just letting off steam so you don't let it out on the person
00:35:23you love.
00:35:24You know?
00:35:25Like Ray.
00:35:26He has to drive around the block a few times every night listening to the radio before
00:35:40he goes home to face Deborah.
00:35:55Are you crazy?
00:35:57When I'm angry at my cat, Miss Puss, sometimes I'll sneak up behind her and bark like a dog.
00:36:05I like to blow up fireworks.
00:36:08What?
00:36:13Cat!
00:36:15I thought since it wasn't a secret anymore.
00:36:21Oh, boy.
00:36:34she was just in heaven and she always talked to everyone about the writing on
00:36:41this show working with Phil for years and years and years after so beautiful
00:36:46thank you for you know we're so lucky to work with these comedy legends that we
00:36:52idolized you know we stand on the shoulders of the great people that came
00:36:55before us obviously people have passed and we've seen a lot of clips of our
00:37:01our mom and dad on the show but when we come back we'll talk about them
00:37:06let's talk about the parents for you and me it it it's very personal because they
00:37:35were so based on our parents yeah the mother was more you I mean the mother
00:37:40was and the dad was more you maybe I used to say everything you saw Peter do my
00:37:45father probably did in real life without pants on but I remember just talking
00:37:53about Peter during the pilot episode so now I'm a young guy who just got fired
00:37:58from news radio and here I am again attempting a show and I'm nervous and
00:38:04Peter is the great Peter Boyle or this iconic movie guy and he's an imposing
00:38:10figure I had didn't know then how sweet he really was and and I hadn't really had
00:38:15a conversation with Peter and our paths were crossing and I swear to God it must
00:38:19have been right here and he just stops me and I don't we I haven't said anything to
00:38:24him he just stops me and I guess he could tell he could tell that I was a little
00:38:27nervous and he just looks and he goes I remember the words he just goes it's just
00:38:32like water just let it flow and he and then he leaves and at that time I'm like
00:38:39what does that mean and and even though as an actor I didn't know what exactly what
00:38:46that meant but I do now just the gesture the gesture of him reaching out to me it's
00:38:53everything yeah it's everything yeah beautiful anyway go ahead talk about
00:38:58we saw a hundred ladies for the part they all read with that fruit of the month scene
00:39:07no one came close to Doris Roberts no one she was what was in my head and in my life
00:39:16and and was was so beyond even my my real mother used to say you know it is a little exaggerated
00:39:25but you never saw that with Doris because she was always spot on she was always a hundred percent
00:39:35believable Peter too again I keep reiterating the same thing we could be the best writers in the
00:39:42world it wouldn't matter if we didn't have these people and Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts
00:39:50let me show you something let me show you something
00:39:53Marie oh well okay oh Frank this is wonderful you dumb bastard
00:40:09what write it out you put a stop to this now all right dad let me ask you she's in a bad mood
00:40:20what two three days tops before you know it what used to be a bad mood now takes over and becomes
00:40:27her only mood and then well then you become like me when not a day goes by that I don't wish
00:40:39there was a comet screaming towards earth to bring me sweet relief
00:40:43that's gonna need another coat
00:40:56did you say that you like Amy more than Deborah
00:41:02I am not saying that I like Amy more than Deborah
00:41:08I know I know I know you're not saying it now but did you say it ever
00:41:17what what if I told you that we have a tape of you saying it
00:41:26give me the tape what we do in our bedroom is our own business and I prefer not to be known as the
00:41:41whore of Lindbrook
00:41:42we can move from Lindbrook
00:41:49can't you ever just be quiet
00:41:56don't you tell me to be quiet
00:41:58I have a mind of my own you know
00:42:00I can contribute I'm not just some
00:42:03trophy wife
00:42:04you're a trophy wife
00:42:15what contest in hell did I win
00:42:20you still can't think of anything nice to say about me
00:42:26how about I sleep on it
00:42:34it's all jokes
00:42:39Frank what are you doing no no no I need that Frank
00:42:54I like you better without the crap on your face

00:44:09never stop working on hiatuses
00:44:11always working
00:44:12taking acting classes
00:44:14and directing plays
00:44:1690
00:44:16yes
00:44:17and Peter was
00:44:18pretty much the opposite of that guy
00:44:21he was
00:44:22a kind of a renaissance man
00:44:25yes he wasn't really like that character
00:44:28two things about him you may not know
00:44:30he studied to be a monk
00:44:32yes
00:44:33I asked him what made you give it up
00:44:35he said there weren't enough girls there
00:44:36and best man at his wedding
00:44:40was John Lennon
00:44:43yeah

00:45:06and
00:45:06and we were like
00:45:08so excited
00:45:09because
00:45:09we're going to be able to
00:45:10play every week
00:45:11with this legend
00:45:12and
00:45:13and Ray went
00:45:14you know
00:45:15I think it's so fitting
00:45:16that the guy who's playing
00:45:17your dad
00:45:18was young Frankenstein
00:45:20well they became

00:46:08on the show
00:46:08and it
00:46:09it just
00:46:10sort of taught you
00:46:11that like
00:46:11lessons are learned
00:46:12and arguments are made
00:46:14when you're sitting down
00:46:16to eat
00:46:16you learn a lot
00:46:18about each other
00:46:18you should ask Debra
00:46:19how she makes this
00:46:20I should ask Debra
00:46:26I should ask Debra
00:46:29give me that
00:46:31food is
00:46:43food is
00:46:43you know

00:46:56food is love
00:46:59because food is
00:47:00bringing people together
00:47:01and so yeah
00:47:02we hit it
00:47:02all the time
00:47:03a man needs
00:47:05chicken
00:47:07food is everything
00:47:09and that's because
00:47:10that's Phil's obsession
00:47:11for Phil
00:47:12food was the most important thing
00:47:14and it's the great connector
00:47:15we actually had a lot to eat
00:47:17on the plane
00:47:18so off we go to Italy
00:47:23and of course the character
00:47:24of Ray Barone
00:47:25is miserable
00:47:26hey this is the Spanish steps
00:47:28where's the Spanish elevator

00:47:44about everything
00:47:45this is like the best pizza
00:47:46I ever had man
00:47:47he realizes
00:47:48the great thing
00:47:49which is his family
00:47:50the culture
00:47:51the people
00:47:52all those things
00:47:54are actually
00:47:54truly beautiful
00:47:55and he's been missing them
00:47:56the whole episode
00:47:58look we're in the kitchen
00:48:03food was a very important part
00:48:06of the show
00:48:07I think Marie held sway
00:48:09over the entire family
00:48:11because she was a great cook
00:48:12and a
00:48:13who wasn't

00:49:56or how impactful what we were doing was
00:49:58so yeah I would get upset that you know
00:50:01I couldn't be in the school play

00:54:32between the ages
00:54:33of 18 to 25
00:54:34but 90% of people
00:54:37who seek treatment
00:54:38are cured
00:54:39and so many
00:54:40of the messages
00:54:41that we get
00:54:42are people saying

00:55:40then to take
00:55:41these big swings
00:55:42with physical comedy

01:00:34When Raymond left for Hollywood, me and my brother Bobby decided to put a little note in his
01:00:42suitcase, because we were going to miss him, you know, and I didn't hear anything and neither
01:00:47did my brother Robert for nine years.
01:00:49I didn't know if he read it.
01:00:51And then the final show comes and it was very, very dramatic and, you know, emotional.
01:01:00And in his speech, he says, I want to read something.
01:01:05This is a little note that my brother, both my brothers gave me.
01:01:10When I went deep in New York, I'm saying, oh my God, he saved it?
01:01:15They sucked this into my luggage.
01:01:18What I wrote to him was, I hope you remember this verse, what does it profit a man?
01:01:25He gains the whole world but loses his soul.
01:01:30He had tears in his eyes and he goes, I hope I did that, God.
01:01:36And it was very moving and I think he did.
01:01:39I think God would be very happy with him.
01:01:47Thank you so much for being with us tonight.
01:01:49We're so thrilled to be with you.
01:01:51We owe everything to you guys.
01:01:52You know, when we started, it was a show about a family, four families.
01:01:57And after a little while, it was being made by a family.
01:02:00What you don't see are all the people that really made the show with us.
01:02:06Some of whom we haven't seen since we went off the air.
01:02:10So if we could, let's bring most of them out.
01:02:14Nice cat.
01:02:21Oh my god.
01:02:23I thought I got the joke.
01:02:25Oh my god.
01:02:37That's right.
01:02:39Now, one little more thing we want to share with the audience.
01:02:51It's kind of like a gag reel, so we want to share that with you
01:02:54and with everybody who made the show.
01:02:58What? What's wrong? What happened?
01:03:03You kicked me!
01:03:06I did?
01:03:07Oh, right in the garden of good and evil.
01:03:12Right in Geppetto's workshop.
01:03:15Right in Granny's apples.
01:03:17Right in the Hard Rock Cafe.
01:03:20You know where I had to go for this suit?
01:03:23Wherever it was, I'll bet it was dark.
01:03:25I'm just a simple man who tried to make a difference.
01:03:42I still put my pants on one leg at a time.
01:03:45Yeah, but you should stop when I reach your nipples.
01:03:58You know where I had to go for this suit?
01:04:01A little shop of horrors.
01:04:03Okay.
01:04:08Come on.
01:04:10Come on, man.
01:04:11Now, all that remains is the issue of we should be granted guardianship
01:04:15in the event that both of you die at the same time.
01:04:18Whoa, slow down.
01:04:19We're still trying to have an orgasm at the same time.
01:04:20You know where I had to go for this suit?
01:04:36Goldens?
01:04:37That's right.
01:04:45Hey, Marie, I knew you named them, but I didn't know you fed them.
01:04:53It's like I've been to the world where ladies want Ray.
01:04:57Ray Bird.
01:04:57Ray Bird.
01:04:58Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:04:59Ray Bird.
01:04:59Ray Bird.
01:05:00You know what?
01:05:01With your penis and my money, we're unstoppable.
01:05:03We're unstoppable.
01:05:07You better have a lot of money.
01:05:14To be honest, Debra, it's not a style I'd ever wear.
01:05:20Nice try, though.
01:05:23Put it on.
01:05:32Thank you, everybody.
01:05:35You want to say goodbye?
01:05:35I do.
01:05:36I want to say, I want to say to, to all of you and to all of you,
01:05:43I used to say this to Ray all the time, thanks for the good life.
01:05:49Yeah.
01:05:50And we wish the same to all of you.
01:05:52Thank you, everybody.
01:05:55Yeah!
01:05:56Yay!
01:05:59Everybody, all the time!
