00:06A sweeping overhaul of immigration protections is back in the spotlight as a House Republican

00:10moves to dismantle long-standing safeguards for thousands of migrants, tying his effort

00:16to an expanding fraud investigation in Minnesota.

00:19According to Fox News, Representative Wesley Hunt, a Texas Republican, introduced legislation

00:24Tuesday that would terminate temporary protected status for immigrants from Sudan, Syria, Yemen,

00:30Lebanon, and Somalia.

00:32The proposal comes amid ongoing investigations into alleged fraud in Minnesota's social

00:37services system.

00:38If passed, it would require immigrants from affected countries living in the U.S. under

00:42refugee protections to leave within 180 days, which Hunt said, addresses failures in immigrant

00:48vetting.

00:49It's important that we ensure that those entering our country are properly vetted and they clearly

00:54have not been properly vetted, so what we are trying to do is ensure that we address this.

00:59We stop this," Hunt told Fox News Digital.

01:02The timing of the bill, Hunt said, is directly connected to mounting scrutiny surrounding

01:07Minnesota's Somali community, where federal prosecutors are investigating what could amount

01:12to billions of dollars in fraud tied to public assistance programs.

01:16Authorities have charged multiple people in the $240 million Feeding Our Future Fraud case

01:22and are now investigating whether other state programs were also exploited, including state-funded

01:27child care providers, many within the Somali community.

01:31The political fallout from the investigation has been significant.

01:34Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced he would not seek a third term, citing concerns that

01:39his campaign could distract from efforts to protect residents from both criminal activity

01:44and political opportunism.

01:46Every minute that I spend defending my own political interests would be a minute I can't

01:50spend defending the people of Minnesota against the criminals who prey on our generosity and

01:55the cynics who want to prey on our differences," Walz said.

01:58Hunt rejected Walz's explanation and accused the governor of deeper involvement.

02:02I mean, looking at Tim Walz's decision not to seek re-election, where there's smoke, there's

02:08fire.

02:09There certainly is more to come out of this situation," Hunt said.

02:12He was clearly complicit in what was going on.

02:15That's why he's not seeking re-election, and so there's a lot of there that's there,

02:19and it needs to be exposed, and needs to be investigated.

02:23He added,

02:24Making sure that we revoke these TPS designations is the beginning of cleaning up this mess.

02:29Hunt said the bill would speed up President Donald Trump's effort to end TPS for Somali

02:34nationals in Minnesota, citing cultural and national security concerns.

02:39As somebody that has lived under Sharia law, somebody that has deployed to the Middle East,

02:44this is also a broader conversation about keeping people that hate our country out of here,"

02:49Hunt said.

02:50And so what we're going to do is try to pass legislation that codifies what President Trump

02:54is trying to do.
