Many major retailers, including Poundland and River Island, have announced a massive raft of store closures this January. We ask people on the streets of the north east what can be done to save the high street, or is online shopping now just too convenient and too powerful?

00:00But it's like a vicious circle, because when you go in a shop these days, it doesn't have the stock that it used to, or the sort of things you might want to buy.
00:11I think a lot of it's money. I think people just can't afford to go in, because the prices can be ridiculous.
00:18Saying that, I'd rather go to town and support local businesses rather than order off Amazon, because the way they treat the workers is terrible.
00:25And it's no good, really.
00:27You buy everything online, and the more you buy it online, the less likely it is that the retail sector will survive. I don't have an answer.
00:36Anything just to get people in and get them full, if they can reduce the rates, or if they can give some incentives to get people in.
00:44Because especially somewhere like Newcastle, it's a beautiful city, and I think maybe if you're from here, you don't appreciate it as much, but we're not.
00:50So every time we come, we say how beautiful it is, and everyone's really friendly, it's vibrant, and if you can get more people in the city centre, it'd be even better, won't it?
