00:00Alright, so one of the things I highly
00:29recommend the way I want people to watch these DVDs, not necessarily just mine or anybody's.
00:35We all go back to history and we look at Bruce Lee's movie, we look at, you know, Enter the
00:39Dragon, and for me that was one of the classic movies.
00:42There's a scene in there he talks about, you know, it's like a finger pointing to the moon,
00:47and the student looks at the finger and he hit bumps him with the head and he goes, don't
00:52concentrate on the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory.
00:57So what happens I think with a lot of us these days is that we see somebody take lessons
01:02and you know, we have this list in our head, you know, back of our head saying, oh I'm looking
01:07for these things.
01:08If they do this thing and this thing, they're good.
01:10If they don't do this thing, oh they're no good, right?
01:13We have this list.
01:14So we forget to accept people unconditionally.
01:17So when I watch something, I truly believe some people will teach you what to do, some
01:21people will teach you what not to do.
01:23Either way they're teaching you.
01:25So what happens when you look at the technique, you know, that we do, don't judge it.
01:29Don't say, you know, oh, you know, I don't like that one or that doesn't work.
01:34That doesn't mean the rest of it won't work.
01:36That doesn't mean the concept doesn't work.
01:38That the technique might not work, but the principle of it will work because the principle
01:43are natural laws.
01:46Natural laws are there, you like them or not.
01:50See, like I'll give you an example of a natural law is gravity.
01:54If I hold the pen in my hand and if I let it go, it will fall on my hand.
01:59You don't have to like that fact that it's going to fall on my hand.
02:01As a matter of fact, the pen doesn't care if you like it or not because it will fall without
02:06you knowing.
02:07So we should become more principle based rather than technique based.
02:12So listen to the boy when I do something and don't judge it by, oh well, you know, he's
02:16a Hapkido style, he's wearing a, you know, a white, I mean, a red t-shirt with a dragon.
02:22That's symbol of Kung Fu.
02:23He's not truly a Hapkido person.
02:25You start falling in that kind of mentality.
02:27You will miss all that heavenly glory that I might be talking about.
02:32Now I honestly as a teacher tell you, I don't do 90% of what I teach.
02:38The other 10%, I'm always on it.
02:40I try my best every day like Sensei Benny always says.
02:44Preach all the time.
02:47If you need to, use words, be an example.
02:50So don't judge things by, you know, here I am trying to do boxing but, you know, I wear
02:55boxing gloves then, you know, my strap wasn't on, it should be laced up right in the strap.
03:00I mean, people start judging things and looking at things and going, oh, that's not how it
03:04is or, you know, and, you know, you did an elbow strike, there's no elbow strikes in Hapkido,
03:09you know, or, you know, you're doing forms, there's no forms in Hapkido.
03:12You start having that mentality, again, you're looking at the finger, you're missing what
03:18it's all about, all right?
03:19So my recommendation again would be, take things exactly for what they are.
03:24Think to yourself, what can I get out of it, right?
03:28I always judge a good seminar that people come to do for me, I always judge a seminar by one
03:33thing, how did the students feel?
03:36If the students come to me and say, oh, man, this guy that came tired of class, he is so
03:39good, I cannot believe how good he is, I always think to myself, okay, well, that's all right,
03:44but if they walk away thinking, oh, my God, I learned so much from this guy and this one
03:48thing he said really made sense to me, then I go, oh, that guy, that's good, that's how
03:51I'm going to have that guy here again, because, you know, you want to become someone who looks
03:58for principle and live your life by principles, not necessarily by techniques, don't, there's
04:06a concept that we talk about, God, it gives me chills to even think about it, it's called
04:10don't make somebody an offender for a word, what that means is that, let's say, you know,
04:15I'm sitting down with a bunch of people, you know, and there'll be a lady over there and
04:20there'll be a bunch of guys and I make this joke and I make fun of women and she'll cut
04:25me off, she'll like, makes me an offender for one word I say and she'll shut me down
04:30for the rest of my time, for the rest of the stuff that I'm talking about, because of one
04:34word that I said, whatever happens to be, right, I think we should be much stronger than to make
04:41people an offender for one word or one piece of action, we should take the time and if the
04:46relationship is worth it to you, there's a lot of times me and my wife will be speaking
04:49and, you know, she'll be, you know, doing, saying something or sometimes even she brings
04:54out the name of an ex-boyfriend, right, right, there's something in me wants to shudder,
04:59like that's, I'm done, I'm not going to listen to her again, but I, you know, I go back to
05:03the goal, what's, you know, what's more important right now, her or what she's talking about,
05:07of course she's more important to me, so I go, you know what, honey, stop for a second,
05:11God, you know, you said so-and-so's name, you know, and 99.9% of the time it's like, oh,
05:17you know what I'm talking about, this and this, and we just get over it, but there's been
05:21so many times where I've lost some great relationships because I held someone offender
05:26for one word or, you know, they did one little thing and you just, you shut them down, you
05:31know, so I think I want to be so strong and so powerful that I can let go of all that and
05:37say, you know what, I'm going to be principle-based, I'm not going to shut people down because of
05:40one thing, so when you look at these DVDs, don't look at the type of knife I'm holding,
05:45don't look at the uniform I'm wearing, don't look at the way, you know, this is, this is,
05:49that, this is that, you know, try to go, you know, I'm here, I invested my time and my
05:54money, what can I get from this? And love me and respect me for exactly for what it is,
06:01you don't have to love too much, you don't have to hate it, but be neutral towards it
06:04and walk away with one lesson. If you could walk away from one lesson, it's ROI, your return
06:11and your investment is well paid. So, with that, good luck training.
06:41Hello and welcome to volume three of the five video series that we're doing on our system
07:03called Hapkido Blend. So, before we start the hand techniques, which we're going to cover
07:08in this DVD, I want to acknowledge a couple of people that have had incredible influence
07:12in my training, my personal training and the way I choose to use my hands and what we teach
07:16in our school and our culture. Number one is Sensei Benny Urquidas, which, you know, really
07:22has been a gift to my life and our life at our school because he really opened my eyes to
07:27the whole idea of using my hands. And, you know, in my lifetime I've come across only a few
07:33times, I've come across people who've had or who I truly believe they're great teachers
07:38and they speak from experience, not necessarily from theory. Because most people that I've been,
07:44you know, again, fortunate enough to train with, there are a lot of collectors out there,
07:47there's a lot of good instructors. But, you know, a few times in my life I've come across
07:51teachers who really have, you know, when they tell you something, it's not because they know
07:57it or they know of it, they've actually done it, they've been there, they've done it. And Sensei has,
08:02you know, it really introduced me to the way to use my hands and feet and change the way,
08:07the way I really look at the hands and feet. Another person is P.J. Goosen, who after studying
08:14strictly boxing with him, I really appreciated the American art of boxing, which to me is
08:19one of the most, you know, superb way of using your hands. Another one is, you know, Sifu Ron
08:24Balicki for introducing me to the trapping and, you know, using sensitivity arts of the Filipino
08:29arts and the Wing Chun that he has taught me. The concept that I want to go over in this
08:35DVD with you guys, the kind of a mental lesson, if you want to say, that I want to share with
08:40you guys is, in my experience of being a martial artist and being a teacher, I've met a lot
08:45of, you know, school owners, I met a lot of martial artists, everyone's tried to, everybody
08:49always tries to do extra stuff. Like, you know, some school owners, some martial artists,
08:53they're always great at doing extra stuff. And, you know, including me for years. And
08:59the older I get, I go back to, you know, I'm truly understanding what the word extra, what
09:03the definition of the word extra is, which to me means, after you've done what you're
09:08supposed to do, then go ahead and do extra stuff, which is a wonderful thing to do. But
09:14my experience has been, most people don't do what they're supposed to do, but they love to
09:18do extra stuff. They love to go out there and, and, and find out about other systems
09:23and, you know, other stuff where they haven't really even studied their own. They haven't
09:27gone back to their own, their own heritage and see what their art offers or their teacher,
09:31or their own training, but they love to go out there and see, to get extra stuff. So my
09:38lesson for you would be, you know, find out what it is you really want, which is very difficult
09:43to do unless you have a vision, and very difficult to do if you don't have a written vision, because
09:48you can't keep constantly changing your goal. So go back to see what really, set a goal
09:52about you for yourself, and what is it you really want to accomplish in your training.
09:56Have a vision, write it down, ask for feedback about it, go to a few people who have done
10:01it before, ask for feedback, and constantly every day measure yourself towards that goal.
10:06See if you're reaching that goal. What is it you want to, what experience do you want
10:10to create in other people? Like, personally for me, these DVDs were not designed necessarily to
10:15impress you, to, you know, it was mostly to impress upon you a life-scale lesson, something
10:21that you can walk away from, and thinking, God, I can use the nine dots, or I can use the
10:26extra thing, or I can use the thing that he said, more than, you know, I like the way he
10:31did the, you know, jab, cross, hook, or the boxing combinations, because like I said, anybody
10:35can do those at any time. And they're not, they're really what I consider extra stuff.
10:40Is to go back, go back to your vision, what it is you want to accomplish in your training,
10:45and hopefully this, me, and these DVD series, will introduce you to something to get it closer
10:51to your own vision. So, happy training, and if you have any questions, any feedback for
10:55me, I'd love to get back with you.
10:58Hello, everyone. In this section, we're going to cover some of the hand techniques that we
11:12practice in our system, Hapkido Blend. The word blend means multicultural martial arts
11:19based on usefulness, and you're going to see a variety of systems and hand techniques that
11:24we incorporate into our system. So, we're going to start with some of the basic stuff that we
11:28do. It's called a one-hand hubad. Hubad in Filipino means literally to tie in and tie out. So,
11:34there's a great sensitivity drill for both sides. Okay, so I'm going to start, basically,
11:39he starts grabbing my arm from here like this. My first move is from here, I'm going to go
11:44circle up, and I'm going to re-grab and control him right back. Then he does the same thing to
11:48me. Then I go up and up. Or, I can go back and circle the other way. And notice by doing this,
11:56I'm really controlling his body and not for the other arm to hit me. Okay, he does the same thing
12:01to me. Circles the other way, not circle the other way. One, and backs. Okay, so let's do that one more
12:08time, please. So, I grab, he circles up. As soon as he circles up, I'm going to circle up. Okay,
12:13then I'm going to circle down. It's like a little game that we play. Next one is called stripping,
12:18and it's literally like, you know, there's water on your arm. You want to kind of get rid of it,
12:22strip it. So, when he grabs, I'm going to strip the arm and re-grab. So, literally, we're going to
12:27strip it down. Alright, so we might do moves like this back and forth, where I'm going to circle up,
12:32or I might circle down, or I might strip it. Right? Now, if his energy is pushing me up, I'm not going
12:39to strip it down. So, from here like this, I'm going to go from this angle, I'm going to strip it up.
12:44Okay, so that's going stripping up. Good. I might strip it down. I might circle and go the other way.
12:51Alright, so next one is called the destruction. So, from here like in the Filipino, they call
12:57him the gunting, which means I'm going to kill the biceps. So, my left hand is going to cradle the arm,
13:01and I'm going to hit him with the top of the knuckle. So, I'm going to kill the arm. So, I'm going to be
13:06nice. I'm just going to hit it open hand. I'm going to hit it from here like this. I'm going to get rid of it.
13:10So, he hits it. Get it, get rid of it. Again. So, we might circle back up again. I'm going to strip it.
13:19Might kill it. Okay? Now, from here, we're going to go right to hyperextension of the fingers.
13:26Notice, I'm going to do a monkey grab from the bottom. So, while he's pushing towards me, I'm going to grab,
13:31pull back, and go from here against the fingertips. A concept that you want to be introduced to here is,
13:38you don't want to stand there and admire your work. I think we talked about this before,
13:43where you wouldn't do these techniques and go hyperextension and go, okay, well, look to see
13:47how great I did. You would actually follow up in whatever you need to do afterwards. All right?
13:53So, don't make sure you don't fall into the trap of, you know, waiting and admiring your work. So,
13:58again, so we're going to do a circle. Okay? We're going to do stripping down. We might strip it up.
14:05Okay? We might go for the bicep. We might get the hyperextension from here going. All right? So,
14:13now, from the one hand, his stuff is very easy to switch. Now, watch the way we're going to switch.
14:17Now, while he's, notice he's stripping down, right? When he strips down, if I grab the hand,
14:21now we switched. Now, we're on the other side. So, we can practice, actually, all the techniques done
14:26on both sides. So, from here, when he strips, I go back to the other side and I switch. This is how it's done.
14:32So, from here, we're going to go to neck grabs. So, while we're doing these techniques, keep going.
14:37Do you want to do any of them from here? I might from here and go like this and grab the neck.
14:42Okay? So, the first one he's going to do is call it remove and grab. So, he literally removes my hand
14:47and grabs me in a clinch. So, I remove and I grab. Remove and grab. The hands are up. Remove and grab.
14:56Okay? Now, next one is from here. I'm going to drop my shoulder, literally do a shoulder roll and come back
15:02and grab him. So, he shoulder rolls and grabs. So, I might remove and grab. I might shoulder roll.
15:09Good. Next one will be a hyperextension. So, from here, I'm going to hold on to the hand. I'm going to
15:14hyperextend his arm. I'm going to hyperextend it and come right back. All right. So, he hits it and snakes
15:20his hand right back into it. Okay? So, from here on my shoulder. From here, I might remove and grab.
15:27Or, I might deny it. Okay? So, from here like that. I'm just denying it not to let him do that and I
15:33continue. All right? So, he might get full extension. I'm going to deny it from here like this. I'm going
15:40to remove and grab. Okay? Now, from here we get into the destruction. So, same one I'm going to grab.
15:46I'm going to go for the biceps. I'm going to hit it and I'm going to go back to him.
15:49So, he hits mine. I do any of those. Go over my bicep. Go back. Okay? Now, from here like this,
15:58I'm going to do a vertical one. So, I'm going to go straight up. I'm going to wipe the eye and I'm
16:03going to elbow. So, from here like this. I'm going to hit it at the same time. I'm hitting it. I'm
16:08elbowing him. I'm wiping the eye and elbow strike. So, again, we're flowing. Okay? So, any of them he wants
16:16to do from here. Okay? So, from here, I'm going to do the hyperextension. I'm going to do the shoulder roll.
16:24Now, watch from here like this. I might even hit him, come back and grab his arm. So, we go back to the
16:29first one that we did. Or, from here, then we can move on to the legs. We're going to actually do
16:33take downs later on. All right? So, this works on all different parts of the body. A great way to kind of
16:39loosen up and do some of these sensitivity drills. The next one we're going to get introduced to is
16:44actual HUBAD. So, we're going to start facing each other. We're going to start by him doing a
16:50straight down. I'm going to start with a high block. So, I'm going to do a block. So, it'll be check,
16:55raise, slap, hit. So, he'll check, raise, slap, hit. So, I'm checking it. I'm raising it, which is
17:03actually a strike. I'm going to slap and I'm going to hit him. Check, raise, slap, hit. So, we start by this
17:08basic move of the HUBAD. Now, notice I'm doing a high block. I could do a check instead of a high
17:15block. Instead of a high block, I can actually check. So, we're going to do a practice with a check.
17:19One of the advantages of the HUBAD is that it gives me energy so I can do my hand techniques
17:25that we covered in the other DVD. So, let's say I'm working on arm bars. So, I can go back to an arm bar,
17:30come back and work on my drill. Maybe I'm doing wrist twist. I come back to a wrist twist and I come back
17:36to the move again. I'm doing spinning wrist throw. Maybe I come back and do a drill. I go back. So,
17:43it's a live move that we can go back and forth doing it. So, again, any of the hand techniques that
17:48we've done before of the joint lock techniques could be done from here. That's why I think the
17:54HUBAD is so powerful and such a great way to get the hands going and it's a live exercise. Even down to
18:01destruction. If we go in here. So, this move right there. I'm hitting the nerves. I'm going to check
18:06ice strike that we talked about before. Right? Then, I'm going to go move on and we just go back and
18:12forth. Okay? So, HUBAD again is a great way to start the whole idea of sensitivity drills. So, we
18:20started with the one hand. We went to the neck and we went to the actual HUBAD.
18:36All right. In this segment, we're going to go over what we call the check system. Many ways you can
18:40actually check the hand. So, we're going to go from a fighting stance. We're going to start right now
18:44just with checking the jab. You could jab. You could actually check the cross too. We'll demonstrate a
18:48little bit later, but I'm just going to be worried about this one. So, my first thing is my rear hand
18:52is going to check it. So, that's number one. He hits. I'm just basically just checking it. A couple of
18:56things to look forward to is that I don't want to cover my own hand. That's a big no-no. I just want
19:01to kind of get rid of it and come back. Get rid of it and come back. Next one is catching it. So, from here
19:06like this, I'm going to step back and I'm literally catching it from here. All right. So, that's the first one is
19:11a check system. Second one is catching it. Next one is what we call a scoop, which means he punches. I literally
19:17scoop it out of the way. My forearm stays and I basically just do this move to scoop it out. So,
19:22he punches. I scoop. I can come right back in. That's what it's good for. It's a circular move.
19:28I'm going to scoop it and I go back. Next one is called the throw away. So, and the throw away
19:33basically is the same as a scoop, but you want to kind of push it out of the way so you can follow up
19:38and do whatever you need to do afterwards. So, again, from the beginning, we checked it.
19:43We catch it. We scoop it. We're going to throw it away so we can continue doing something with it.
19:49All right. So, after the throw away, we're going to get into interception, which means my check,
19:54my actual checks, so when he hits me, my check becomes actual strike. My arm is down. I'm striking
19:59here at the same time. So, again, forward. Okay. So, from here, I'm hitting him with my forearm and I'm
20:05intercepting it at the same time. The next one are what we call the destructions. The concept of
20:11destruction, again, is from an Indonesian system called penjat silat, which means to defang the
20:16snake and kill the closest thing to me. So, I'm going to attack the nerves and the bicep underneath
20:21and the tricep. Then we're going to attack the hand. So, first one is what we call a split.
20:25He punches. I'm going to split the hand. I'm checking it with top of my knuckles. I'm going to hit the
20:30bicep. I'm going to start with my hands down. So, he hits. I'm hitting it. I'm going to be nice. I'm
20:35just going to hit it with my hand. Again, so that's the split. So, if he happens to punch with the other
20:40hand, I'm going to split. So, you can see that better. See, I'm checking it and this hand actually
20:45splits it. The vertical one will be from down here. So, if he crosses me, I'm going to check and hit it at
20:52the same time from here. Again, I'm here. I'm not going to stand there and admire my work. I'm going to keep going
20:58forward. So, what we did so far was a split. We did the vertical. Now, we're going to do the horizontal
21:03one. So, the horizontal one, I'm going to step out and attack the nerve. It will make more sense
21:09if he punches with this hand. I'm going to check outside and I'm going to hit the bicep inside.
21:14Okay? So, that'll be the same way. Or if he punches with the other hand, I'm going to do the outside
21:21right here. So, so far we did the split, vertical and horizontal. Next one is the elbows. So, from here,
21:27like this, I'm going to check the hand. I'm going to guide it to my own elbow. Again,
21:32so he punches and boom, I'm hitting it. So, I'm hitting it. If my hand happens to be here,
21:38I'm hitting it forward. I can go upwards or this hand or if it happens to check it this way,
21:46I'm just going to hit it down or I'm going to hit it up. So, again, the concept is to kill the closest
21:52thing to you. So, this is what we call the basic check system. One more time, really slow. First one,
21:57we checked it. Second one, we caught it. Then we scooped it. Then we did a throwaway. Right? Then we
22:03did interception. Then we did the destruction, which is a split, vertical, horizontal. Then we went
22:12for the elbows. All right. So, that covers the basic check system.
22:26All right. Next set of techniques we're going to do is what we call point of reference. Now,
22:30we have high point of references, low point of references, middle ones. Well, basically,
22:33what a point of reference to me means is a lot of times when we spar and stuff, we'd be hitting each
22:39other. We block the arm from here. And so, what happens is the arm is going to remember this becomes
22:46a point of reference. And as long as we're fighting people that have, like Bruce Lee said, as long as
22:50we're fighting people that have two arms and two legs, we can pretty much say if the hand is here,
22:55where the head is going to be. So, to me, the human body is an incredible machine, but it's very
23:01predictable. And that means if I turn his shoulder, his head will go with it. There's no way I'm going
23:06to, you know, turn him like this and his head's going to go over there. Or if his feet are here,
23:10the chances are the head is right there. You can't have your feet here than the head being over here.
23:15Based on knowing that, the body established it was called a point of reference. That means
23:19next time when my hand hits, my muscle memory will remember. Based on his point of reference,
23:24the head should be there because of the way his elbows are. So, I know what that is. That's what we call
23:29a point of reference. So, the first high point of reference from here is what we call a tap hit.
23:34Notice my elbows are in and not out from here like this. So, if we both hit each other at the same
23:39time, he's going to be shooting over there when I'm going to be hitting to his face because my elbows
23:43are in. So, the first one is called a tap hit, which I'm literally going to tap his hand and I'm going
23:49to hit him. So, from here like this, I'm going to go to high point of reference. I'm going to tap hit.
23:53Now, if he happens to catch that and blocks it, if he catches that, I'm going to just continue going
23:59and make that double, double tap hit. So, notice again, I'm going to tap hit. If he blocks it,
24:04I'm still going to go in forward. So, again, the first one is a tap hit. So, why don't you try it
24:11one time? So, he taps. Good. He taps again. I'm checking it again. Tap hit. All right. So, from here,
24:17now, next one is going to be the pull hit, which means I can feel his motion. He's going to come to me.
24:22When he does, I shift from here like this and I hit him with a pull hit. So, from here like this,
24:28if I feel his motion, I'm going to pull hit. Good thing about tap hit and pull hit is that they're
24:32like brothers and sisters. They go kind of together. So, if I go slap hit and he blocks with the same
24:37hand, with the same hand. So, if I go like this, there you go, then I'm going to go pull hit. All right.
24:42If I go for a pull hit from here like this and he blocks with the same forearm, then I'm going to do a tap
24:47hit. Okay. So, start from the beginning. We're going to go slap hit. We're going to go pull hit. Next one is
24:53what's called a round hit. So, my right hand spins all the way around. This one checks and my right
24:59hand is a rich hand or a hook. All right. So, we're going to go slow round hit and round hit. So, we have
25:07slap hit. We have pull hit. We have round hit. Next one is a tap hit. So, from here like this, I'm going to
25:15tap him down for a second. As soon as he brings his back up to resist and that's my hand hitting him.
25:20All right. So, again, tap hit from the beginning. All right. Next one from here is called the
25:25interception, which means he's pushing against me. I can feel it. So, from here like this, I'm going to
25:30intercept by bringing my left hand right through it from underneath. So, again, I'm going to slap hit.
25:36If I feel like pull hit, if I feel like his arm is too strong, I'm going to intercept it from forward.
25:41Okay. The last one is called a rollover, probably the most powerful one, which means like a branch of a
25:46tree. He pushes against me. My mind bends right here and what happens is going to get released.
25:51My left hand comes from this sector. I'm going to grab right here and I'm going to go right over.
25:57So, from here like this, that's the rollover. So, from here, I literally grab, pull, step out and hit.
26:05Okay. So, we're going to start from the beginning. We're going to go tap hit. We're going to go pull hit.
26:10Tap hit. We're going to go round hit. Interception. And a rollover. So, these will be the basics of what we call a
26:21high-pointer reference drills.
26:23All right. In this segment, we're going to go over nine basic boxing combinations that I think is
26:38pretty essential to add into your arsenal of all the weapons that you have. And they're pretty
26:45practical, simple to do. It's a great exercise and you can do lots and lots of variations. So, we're
26:50going to start with a basic one. So, remember the most important thing about doing these punches,
26:55jab and cross and hook, which most systems have, is turning the hand at the last second. So, that's the
27:01first thing we want to do. We want to kind of warm up that wrist. So, my wrist is used to the idea of
27:06turning and even for the hook. So, I want to make sure that little twist at the last second is happening.
27:14All right. So, boxing combination number one is jab, cross and hook. So, come on a little closer, please.
27:19So, I'm just going to basic jab, cross. I'm going to wind up from here and I'm going to do a left hook. So,
27:24come back over here. So, I'm going to go jab, cross and a left hook. Okay, we're going to do the same
27:31thing on Bob. So, I'm going to go jab, cross to the body, hook to the face. So, that'll be a basic
27:38boxing combination number one. Now, come on a little closer, please. Number two is the same thing.
27:42We're going to add a weave to it. So, slow motion. We're going to go jab, cross and a hook. I'm going
27:49to weave. Make sure I'm not ducking under. I'm not going like this. I'm looking at him turning my
27:53shoulder all the way up. Now, I'm already cocked up from here. I'm going to do a hook, cross and a hook.
28:00You're going to notice that all the combinations finish with a hook for obvious reasons because I want to
28:05make sure I'm sideways. Ready? So, we're going to go number two. So, I go one, two, three. One, one, two,
28:12three. Okay, same thing from here. So, one, two, three. I'm going to Bob looking at him. So, hook, cross and a
28:20hook. It's a little bit more for accuracy here. So, I'm going one, two, three. I'm going to turn. I'm going to
28:27hook right to the chin. I don't want to hit him to the side of the face. So, right to the chin, maybe to the
28:33body and to the chin again. In fact, the more tip of it I get, the better it is. Okay, we're going to
28:40move on to boxing combination number three. So, on this one, notice one hand is down. So, I'm going to go jab,
28:47cross. You'll notice I'm going to weave the other way. I'm going to come back. This shoulder is protecting
28:54me. I'm all cocked up for the cross. So, there's my cross and there's my hook. So, that's boxing combination
29:00number three. I'm going to do that again. So, one, two, three, four, five. So, from here, I go one, two,
29:09three, four, five. My hands are up. Going one, two, three, four, and a five. All right. So, that's your basic
29:21boxing combination number three. We're going to move on to number four. A little closer, please. So, this one,
29:29notice the way he's holding the focus mitts and I'll go over that a little bit more in detail.
29:33Basically, what that this is is a representation of a cross. So, if we're fighting, he does a cross to me
29:39from here with that hand. I would take it from here, what we call rolling. So, imagine a steel rod
29:46all the way down a pole and I'm turning on that pole. I'm not going back right here. I'm turning.
29:54So, this is his representation of it. So, look lower please. So, I go jab, cross, roll, but my eyes are
30:02still on him. My left foot is completely turned and my hand is all the way up. So, I go cross and a hook.
30:09One more time. So, I go jab, cross, roll, cross, hook. Same thing here. I go one, two, roll, my elbow is up,
30:19my hand is up, straight down, and turn. On bob. So, I'm going one, two, roll back, cross, and a hook.
30:29So, that's your basic combination number four. Five is pretty much the same thing, but come a little
30:36closer, please. I don't have time to roll, so I'm going to block it. So, the way I'm going to block it
30:41is I'm going to turn my wrist over one eye, my forearm forward, one eye still looking,
30:46and I'm going to block it with my forearm. So, from here, slow motion jab, cross, he comes to me.
30:53So, notice I'm blocking it. I raise my heel for a second, cross, and a hook. So, again. So, I go one,
31:01two, he hits me, boom, cross, down. One more time. So, I go one, two, hits, one, two. Come back over here.
31:10One, two, block, and one, two. Again. So, one, two, block, one, and a two. Do the same thing here. So, I go one,
31:19two, block, one, and a two. So, that's boxing combination number five. Come a little closer,
31:28please. Number six. This one. So, I'm going to go jab, cross, it's going to be low on high hook. So,
31:35my first one is going to hit come back. The second one hits the head. Notice I'm already turned,
31:42cross, and a hook. So, jab, cross, low high hook, cross hook. Ready? So, one, two, three, four, five, six.
31:52Again, make sure the hand is nice and high. So, one, two, three, four, five, six. One, two, three, four, five,
32:05and a six. Come a little closer, please. So, that was our boxing combination number six. Seven. Same thing.
32:15Instead of a low hook, we're doing an uppercut. So, slow motion. I'm going to go jab, cross,
32:23left uppercut, same hand, hook, cross, hook. The rule of the uppercut is whenever you do an uppercut,
32:31the hook usually follows because the head goes up, it's wide open for the hook. So, I'm going one,
32:37two, three, four, five, six. Again, one, two, three, four, five, six. So, from here, one, two, in the air,
32:49hook right away, cross, and a hook. So, I go one, two, three under, pick it up, cross, and a hook.
32:58Okay, come this way more. Number eight. This one, I'm going to do a jab. I'm going to get out of the line
33:06of fire. Out of the way, I'm going to hook him. Come back, same hand, cross, hook, cross, hook. Ready?
33:15So, jab, get out of the way. Come back, cross, hook, cross, hook. So, there's your one, out of the way,
33:27cross, hook, cross, hook. So, one, out of the way, cross, hook, cross, hook. Last combination is what we call the doubles.
33:41Okay? So, we're going to go jab, cross, low, low, high, cross, hook, cross, hook. So, that actual number
33:54nine has nine moves in it. Again, slow motion. So, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. So,
34:08one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. So, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight,
34:27and nine. So, there's your basic one through nine and I'm going to explain to you next how to actually hold
34:32the focus mitts. All right, everyone. Welcome back. We're going to do the boxing combinations one
34:43through nine one more time. I'm going to introduce you to another side of the whole boxing combinations
34:49and that's holding the focus mitts. I'm of a true belief system that the reason why they're called
34:54focus mitts because I'm the one needs to focus when I'm holding this. One of the greatest thing about
34:59holding the focus mitts which I love to do and I highly recommend people to learn how to do it
35:03because you learn what can and cannot hurt you. All right, just like listening is a lot more difficult
35:09than speaking. It's easy to talk. It's difficult to listen. So, focus mitts really is going to require
35:14me to listen to him and look at and judge my distance about what can hurt me. All right, so I highly
35:20recommend this to holding him to be a part of your training. All right, so we're going to go over one
35:24through nine. Notice I'm right foot back. My hands are nice and relaxed. Hands up. So, I'm going to start by hitting jab.
35:29He's going to do number one which is jab, cross, and a hook. So, notice when he hits me, I'm kind of moving
35:34with this. I'm not really hitting him back, not yet. I know some trainers like to do that. All right,
35:38so one more time number one. One, two, three. Good. I'm going to go to boxing combination number two. So,
35:43slow motion. Do you remember from when I was doing it? So, one, two, three. I'm going to weave. Now, notice
35:50I'm going to be a good partner. I'm not going to go above his head. I'm going to be real. I'm going to go right for
35:54his chin. He's going to cover it. He's going to go hook, cross, hook. A lot of people hold the
35:59focus mitts like this. Jab, cross, hook. See, what that means is that I'm fighting two people,
36:04right? Remember, as long as the human beings have the same head and two arms and two legs,
36:08so you want to make sure they're pretty much close together. So, it's a head and a head,
36:12not head and a head over here. All right, so we're going to do number two one more time. So, one, two,
36:17three. Weave, hook, cross, hook. There you go. Number three. All right, so I'm going to do the same
36:23thing. This one, my hand is down because I don't need it yet. So, slow motion. He's going to do a jab,
36:27cross. I'm going to go through. I'm going to wait. He's going to completely turn. He's going to go across
36:33and a hook. So, number three again. So, jab, cross, cross, hook. Good. That was number three. Now,
36:40we're going to go number four, right? So, this one, remember, this is the one that's going to cause him to roll.
36:44So, I'm going to keep my hand here. I'm going to roll and bring him right back up. This one doesn't move.
36:49So, jab, cross, roll, cross, hook. That's number four. One more time. Jab, cross, roll, cross, hook.
36:58Number five is the same thing. I'm going to hit him with the back of the hand. Ready? So, one, two, block,
37:05cross, hook. There you go. Again. One, two, block, cross, hook. All right, so that was number five. Number six, low,
37:12high, hook. So, jab, cross. So, I'm going to hold this one right to my kidney. Notice when he was holding
37:18it for me, he was kind of like this. That doesn't really work for me because if the hook is strong,
37:23first, I'm going to hit myself and second, it's not good for my elbow. So, I'm just going to actually
37:27cushion it against my own body. So, he hits low, he hits high, then cross, hook. All right, again. So, jab, cross,
37:35uppercut, hook, cross, hook. There you go. Okay, so next one is the same thing. Instead of a low hook,
37:42we're going to do an uppercut. So, we're going to go jab, cross, uppercut, hook, cross, hook. So,
37:49basically, all I have to do is just drop that hand. All right, one more time. So, jab, cross, uppercut,
37:54hook, cross, hook. All right. So, next one. Hands up. So, this one you're going to go jab. He's going to get out
38:01of the line of fire from here. He's going to body, hook, come back, same hand, hook, cross, hook. There you
38:08go. Hands up. So, one more time. So, jab, get out of the way, come back, same hand, cross, hook, cross, hook. And
38:15the last one, which is doubles. Ready? So, jab, cross, low, low, hook, cross, hook, cross, hook. So, that makes all the
38:27combinations one through nine and for me holding it. Now, we're going to do the same thing on what you
38:32might want to do by disguising repetition. You might want to add some kicks into it. So, these are some of
38:36the stuff that we do. Let's go back to number one again. All right. So, we're going to do jab, cross, hook,
38:40jab, cross, hook. This time, I'm going to hold the right hand on top of the left. He's going to knee,
38:45go back, switch feet, roundhouse to the head. There you go. So, we're going to add that to one, two,
38:51three, and four, let's say. All right. So, again. So, we're going to go jab, cross, hook, knee, go back,
38:56switch, boom. Last one. Ready? Go. So, jab, cross, hook, knee, go back, switch, boom. Now, we're going to do
39:02boxing combination number two, but I'm going to have him switch feet. So, we do the same thing on the other
39:06side. So, with boxing combination number two, jab, cross, hook, weave, hook, cross, hook. Now, he's going to
39:12watch. He's going to switch knee, put your foot forward, and the right roundhouse. So, it's the same
39:17thing, but the other side. So, boxing combination number two. Ready? So, jab, cross, hook, one, two, three,
39:24four, switch knee, and a roundhouse. There you go. So, what you can do, you can take the basics of the
39:29boxing combinations one through nine, and add on to them this way. All right. So, that'd be a great way to
39:34discuss repetition.
39:46All right, everyone. Now that you learned some of the offensive moves, like the boxing combinations
39:50one through nine, we're going to work on a little bit of defense, then we're going to work on a little
39:55bit of defense offense. All right. So, first defense, we call it defensive set. All right. So, we're going
40:00to start with the hands up. He's going to do a basic jab straight to me. My first move is going to be,
40:05I'm going to bob from here like this. My hands are up. I'm just going to turn my shoulder into it,
40:10and I'm going to come back. A big no-no from here is that I don't want to lean forward, okay? And I
40:16don't want to step into it, right? So, right where I am, I'm just going to turn my shoulder, my hands are
40:21still up. So, that's my bob to the left. Then, I'm going to bob to the right. So, from here, notice no footwork,
40:27my hands are up. Go back. So, we're going to do that again in slow motion. I'll do it facing you.
40:31So, from here like this, I'm going to bob to the left, come back. I'm going to bob to the right,
40:36and come back. So, with a partner, again, you can do this by yourself, or you can do it with a partner.
40:41One more time. So, I'm just going to bob, and I'm going to bob. Now, from here, he's going to do a
40:46right exaggerated hook. So, when he does that, from here like this, I'm going to bob, and I'm going to weave,
40:52and come right up. Notice my shoulders are nice and high. He hits with the other one. Now, from here,
40:57I'm going to weave back. Big no-no is you don't want to lean down because you can get kneed.
41:03Alright, so right from here, if I'm going to weave from here, I'm turning, and I'm coming right up.
41:09I'm turning, and I'm coming right up, and I'm turning my feet with it at the same time.
41:13Alright, so we're going to start from beginning. So, he hits. I'm going to go bob,
41:18come back. I'm going to go bob, come back. I'm going to go weave, come back.
41:23I'm going to go weave, come back. Now, he's going to jab me. When he does, I'm just going to check it.
41:28Notice, I'm usually checking with my front hand, with the rear hand only. You do not want to check with
41:33the front hand. So, he hits, I'm going to check it. Alright, so we start from the beginning, facing you.
41:38So, I'm just going to bob, I'm going to bob, I'm going to weave, I'm going to weave, and I'm going to parry.
41:46Alright, next one. Come a little closer. Hands up your face. Hi. So, this one, what happens,
41:52it's going to be, we're going to talk about fainting. So, I'm just going to go ahead and faint forward,
41:57I'm going to faint back, and I'm going to faint down. And you'll see why later on in a few minutes
42:02when we do stage two. So, one more time again, I'm going to go faint forward, and I'm going to faint
42:06back, and faint down. So, fainting literally means like, I'm going to step in like pretend I'm going to hit you,
42:11right. So, I'm going to faint forward, I'm going to faint back, and I'm going to faint down. Alright.
42:16So, we're doing it from the beginning again, slow motion. So, we're going to bob, we're going to bob,
42:22we're going to weave, we're going to weave, we're going to parry, we're going to faint forward, faint back,
42:29faint down. Now, he's going to body shot me. When he does a hook, notice, my glove is up to protecting my face,
42:36my ribs, and I just a little bit of raise my heel towards it. There's my body shot. Okay,
42:41he hits the other hand. Same thing. I raise my heel, my glove is up. I'm protecting myself just in case
42:49he does a low and high. So, there's your body shots from here. Now, he's going to attack my leg. When
42:54he does, I'm standing looking and straightening his eyes from here like this, and I'm going to leg check,
42:59and I'm going to come back one more time. So, I'm going to leg check and go back. Now, he's going to switch
43:04kick. When he does, same thing. I'm going to check with the other side. One more time, switch. I'm going to check with the
43:10other one. Something you want to remember about leg checks. If you touch your shin, toes up, and go
43:15toes pointed, you feel the difference. When you go toes pointed, and when you go up, if your toes are up,
43:22there's a little bit of more covering for the bone versus toes pointed. I personally like to go toes
43:28up when I do a leg check. All right, so the last one is called the redirect, which means he front kicks.
43:33I'm going to step out of the way, redirect, and my glove is up, and I'm getting out of the way.
43:39So, straight forward like this. The attack comes straight forward. I'm going to go off to the side,
43:43and I'm protecting myself. He switch kicks. So, I'm going to same thing. I'm going to go back first,
43:49then I'm going to step right foot out, and I'm still keeping my hands up. One more time on that one.
43:55So, notice I'm going to go back, then right foot back. Hands up. All right. So, that's called your basic
44:01defensive set. So, we're going to do a slow motion. So, let's face forward. We're going to do this kind
44:06of together. Come a little closer to me, please. We're going to face forward. So, in slow motion, right?
44:10We're going to bob, go back. We're going to bob, go back. We're going to weave. We're going to weave.
44:18Okay. We're going to parry. We're going to feint forward. Feint back. Feint down. We're going to go body block.
44:25We're going to go body block. We're going to go leg check. We're going to go leg check. We're going to go
44:32redirect. And we're going to go redirect the other side. All right. You have to make sure you do this
44:39over and over and over again until you feel comfortable and to be safe. If you notice pretty much
44:45this defensive set, if I'm teaching that to a student, if they know how to execute that well,
44:49that pretty much tells me they can defend themselves. Well, they can they can stop somebody
44:54hurting them. Let's put it that way. So, I know if somebody goes out there and hit them hard in
44:58kickboxing, they know at least how to cover themselves. So, it's an incredibly important
45:02stage of learning. Now, next thing was going to be, let's say you got that down pretty well. Now,
45:08we're going to go to what we call defense offense, which I'm going to defend against the same thing,
45:12but I'm going to fight back. All right. So, first one will be, we're going to bob. So, two stages
45:17from here. I just cocked the gun right here. My hands are up. Now, boom, I'm going to do a left body
45:21shot. Now, it's incredibly important that he knows how to block. Okay, because I don't want to do this
45:26in the air. This is not a one-man thing. All right. So, my hands are up and I'm going to hit him to the body.
45:31So, one more time. So, I'm going to bob from here. Boom, hook. So, again, facing forward,
45:37I'm going to bob from here like this. Boom, left shot. All right. So, next time I'm going to bob the
45:43other way. So, I'm going to bob this way. Now, my right hand is overhand right. I can hit him. So,
45:49one more time. We're here. So, I'm going to bob and overhand right. All right. So, start from the
45:55beginning. So, we're going to bob body shot. We're going to bob overhand right. All right. So, what's the next
46:02one? We're getting into the weaving. So, he hooks. I'm going to weave and I'm going to go left hook to
46:07the body. Notice all my weight is chambered here and I'm going to unleash it. Okay. Now, he hooks with
46:14the other side. So, I'm going to bob from here. Same thing. Overhand right. So, his glove better be up to
46:19the face. Which brings me back to the basic thing. You must make sure right now it's hard for us to have
46:25mouthpieces and do this at the same time and talk. But, I highly, highly recommend that you guys have a
46:30mouthpiece even during the practice. Okay. And, you want a little bit of an element of thread because
46:36if there's no thread, there's no learning. Okay. You don't want the guy to kind of go like this. I want
46:40him to be on his toes. That if he makes a mistake, he's going to get nailed. All right. So, a little bit
46:45of thread is good. So, we're going to start from the beginning again. So, we're going to bob body shot.
46:50We're going to bob overhand right. We're going to weave hook to the body. We're going to weave
46:56overhand right. So, what's the next one? We get into the parries. So, this time he's going to parry and I'm
47:03going to jab him right back. All right. One more time. Parry jab. Next one is a parry cross same hand.
47:11So, parry same hand cross. Notice my shoulder just goes straight forward. So, parry same hand forward.
47:17Next one is a parry hook. So, I parry left hook. So, again, parry left hook. Okay. So, notice on the
47:25parry there's three different moves. So, we're going to do those again. So, we're going to parry jab.
47:31We're going to parry cross. We're going to parry left hook. All right. Those will be the ones for parry.
47:37Okay. Next one is feinting. So, I'm going to feint forward and jab. So, I'm going to step. I'm going to
47:44feint then step jab. Right. So, I'm going to feint boom jab. Now, I'm going to feint back while he's
47:50actually jabbing me. Right. So, I'm going to feint back and go back same time with him. So,
47:56there's my feint back same time cross. So, I feint back and boom across. Okay. Now, feint down. He
48:04jabs me. I boom straight down and I hit him. Boom straight down and hit him. Boom straight down. So,
48:10there's my feint forward, feint back and feint down. Now, we're going to do body shots. So,
48:15from here like this, he hits me. My right hand cross. Boom. Hits him. Again, body shot and straight
48:24across. Body shot the other way. One, left hook to the face. So, we're just going to work on body shots. So,
48:31he hits me this. One, straight over. One, left hook. There's the body shots. Now, we get into leg
48:38checks. Leg checks, it gets really neat because we're going to do what's called a stiff jab. So,
48:43what happens is when he comes to the leg, I'm going to do this. My hand is out and I'm almost going to fall
48:50forward with it. So, watch from here like this. I'm going to block from here and I'm going to almost
48:55come forward protecting my face at the same time. So, from here like this. Again, stiff jab. Boom. Straight across.
49:03So, he leg checks. Stiff jab. Straight forward. He switch kicks. So, same concept except from here like this. I'm
49:11going to push it down and a right cross. So, when he switches. Stiff jab. Boom. Right across at the same
49:20time. Right. The last one we get into the redirects. All right. So, from here he kicks. I'm going to
49:26redirect it out. This is called snaking from here like this. I'm going to unwind and leg check and
49:32leg kick him. So, from here I'm going to redirect. Leg check and the other side. So, I'm going to go back
49:40and leg check. So, we're going to walk through this whole thing a little nice and slow. Ready? So, we're
49:47going to bob. Body shot. We're going to bob. Overhand right. We're going to weave. Hook to the body. We're
49:55going to weave. Overhand right. We're going to parry. Jab. We're going to parry. Cross. We're going to parry. Hook.
50:07Okay. We're going to feint forward. Jab. He jabs. Feint back. Cross. Feint down. Jab. Body shots. Hits. Cross.
50:17Whoops. Sorry. Getting the hooks. This one. One. Left hook. Okay. Then we go to leg checks. All right. So,
50:26stiff jab. Straight across. Switch kicks. Strict jab. Straight forward. Redirects. I block out. Leg kick.
50:37And I leg kick. All right. So, this will be our defense offense. All right. When we're doing it. So,
50:44we're going to both doing it facing you. So, I hunched over your face. You can do this with me at the same
50:49time. Ready? So, we're going to bob. Notice all my weight is back here. Left hook.
50:56Come back. We're going to bob the other way. Okay. Remember, protecting myself with the shoulder.
51:02Right overhand. All right. What's next? Weaving. So, we weave. Left body shot. Weave the other way.
51:10Right overhand. Cross. Okay. The parry. So, we're going to parry. Jab. We're going to parry. Hook.
51:18We're going to feint forward. Jab. Feint back. Cross. Feint down. Jab. Body blocks. We're going to
51:30body block. Right cross. Body block. Left hook. Leg check. Stiff jab.
51:39Forward. Same thing. One. And cross. Redirect. Step out.
51:47Leg check. And leg kick. Switch the other side. One. And strike at the same time. Again,
51:54those are the basic way for our defense and offense. You can build combinations on top of
51:59that to actually follow up. But that would be the great way to get you to actually feel comfortable
52:04and confident in sparring.
52:34that would be the great way to get you to get you to get you to get you to get you to
52:36To be continued...
