00:00Hello there, welcome to Getaway.
00:08Coming up, we take you on a one-hour trip right around the planet.
00:12From sailing the wonderful Whitsundays.
00:15You have total freedom to go where you want to go and see the places that you want to see.
00:19To discovering a different sign to the Hawaiian Islands.
00:23Hawaii is also home to some incredible ranches and its fair share of cowboys and cowgirls.
00:29Plus, whining and dining on South Australia's Florio Peninsula.
00:34It's an area of mellow Mediterranean magnificence.
00:38Our first, the gorgeous Greek Islands.
00:54What a place to welcome you to the show.
00:57We are in one of the most famous holiday locations on the planet, the beautiful Santorini Island.
01:06Formed by a volcano thousands of years ago, the spectacular lunar landscape and whitewashed cave architecture has become iconic.
01:16But seeing it for yourself is truly breathtaking.
01:25After boarding our luxury yacht, Emerald Azura, in the Greek capital of Athens, we've island-hopped our way to Santorini.
01:33From here we'll continue our dreamy guide through the Met on Emerald Cruises' vibrant Greece and Turkey itinerary.
01:44Santorini is the best known and most photographed Greek island of them all.
01:49But while its cliffside villages and incredible views have made it world renowned, its wine industry is one of the lesser known attractions.
01:58And how much wine are you producing every year from here?
02:04Well, some Santorini is the biggest winery in the island, produces roughly about half a million bottles annually.
02:11Which is not a very big quantity, but for Santorini is definitely a significant one.
02:17The grapes thrive in this land and they give you the specific character that you can only get from a volcanic terroir.
02:37Santor Wines is worth a visit just for the epic vistas.
02:41Now we're getting in the fun part of tasting some wines.
02:44What a perfect place to try the wine. This is incredible.
02:47I feel like we're overlooking the whole island up here.
02:50It's a view that you can never get enough of.
02:53But the wine itself is also a winner.
02:56What are we going to have?
02:57So, we will start off with our classic label, 100% Assyrtiko indigenous grape variety that we cultivate here.
03:07And Santorini is known for its white wine, isn't it?
03:10Yes, predominantly about 90% of the total production is white.
03:15So, cheers.
03:16Cheers.
03:17We say yamas here.
03:18Yamas.
03:19Yamas.
03:20Yamas.
03:25Ooh, I like that.
03:27Should we try another?
03:28Yes.
03:29Oh, I've been dreaming.
03:30Oh, I've been dreaming.
03:31I've been dreaming.
03:32Santorini is small enough that you can easily experience all the sights in a day.
03:42But a tour of the island generally starts right here.
03:46We're now in Ia.
03:48This would have to be one of the most popular places on Santorini.
03:51It is the most popular.
03:53Why is that?
03:54Every corner of the village is a postcard.
03:57Every place you go and you take a picture, it looks great.
04:00People love the place.
04:02There is no better place than that to be on this island.
04:05Emerald cruises anchors for the entire day in Santorini.
04:14So that we can stay on the island to soak up all this.
04:23Watching a Santorini sunset is one of those bucket list travel experiences many of us have dreamt about.
04:30about and I can now confirm it absolutely lives up to the hype what
04:36makes the sunsets here so spectacular it's a scenery first the cliffside the
04:41views it's almost like you are on a big natural balcony and you're watching the
04:47sun setting diving oftentimes in the ocean
04:52you're always welcome to dine ashore but when the food on board is this good
05:03and might I add all included it's hard to resist
05:07La Cucina is the main restaurant on Emerald Azura and there's no booking required so you can dine
05:14wherever and with whoever you choose every table comes with views of the Mediterranean
05:20but the terrace is most definitely the pick for our fresco dining
05:34saluting the sun on board as we glide through the Mediterranean is a wonderful
05:40way to welcome the new day then the right foot straight 90 degree open your hands
05:45and it's all part of the service with daily yoga and Pilates classes just a
05:50couple of the many added extras that come with cruising in five-star luxury
05:55just forward slowly stretch your upper part
06:13Mykonos is known all over the planet for its beautiful beaches and luxury resorts
06:18making it one of the most popular of all the Greek islands
06:23and what do you think the biggest attraction is that brings people to mykonos
06:27I think that we have the cleanest waters in the Mediterranean Sea and the Aegean
06:32the beaches are beautiful and you will not get the parties that are organized next to the beach anywhere in the Mediterranean Sea
06:40can you find your nice quiet pockets as well there are always places where you can find some peace of mind and you can have a coffee especially in the morning when little Venice is not that crowded
06:57Little Venice is one of the most charming corners of Mykonos and is found on the western part of the island stretching from the old port to the windmills
07:10These windmills I feel are iconic how long have they been here for?
07:17Well they were built in the 16th century and they were used to grind wheat into flour for the population and for export
07:25And now are they used for anything?
07:27They are just iconic landmark of Mykonos
07:31And I guess it's appropriate to have windmills here because oh my goodness it's very windy
07:36Yes as it always is in Mykonos
07:39That's why it's called the island of the winds

08:29After the break a little slice of country life in western New South Wales
08:35Farmstays in Australia have never been more popular
08:44And it's the sort of holiday where everybody wins
08:58For the farmers they get to drought proof themselves and diversify their income
09:02And for city folk they get to dip their toe into a treasured way of life
09:07They may never normally get the chance to see
09:09So I hope you're ready
09:11We've got a farm tour to get to
09:13Carina Station is just a few minutes from Lightning Ridge
09:20A small outback mining town in north-western New South Wales
09:24Just a little shy of the Queensland border
09:28So how big is Carina?
09:306,600 acres
09:32Is that all?
09:34Small hobby farm for here
09:36What's it like for you opening your farm up to everyone?
09:41I think it's great
09:42I think it's great
09:43It gives an opportunity for city people or people from anywhere really to come and have a look at what actually happens on the farm
09:48The country life is in Joe's blood
09:53And he wouldn't have it any other way
09:55You know there's ups and downs and we've just got to yeah ride them out and you know there's good times and there's times when things are tough so yeah we've just got to make a dollar when we can
10:08You know what's really nice
10:09You know what's really nice is for your guests if they're camping here they can really have no one around them at all
10:15You really can have your own space
10:18Well you can have your own space and you can spread out
10:20There's plenty of areas to spread out here you can see around us you know that you can park and not see somebody else
10:27Yeah
10:28Joe and his wife Jacinda bought the property in a pretty run down state
10:34And they set about making it their family home and farm
10:38Come into the shearing shed
10:40Love, love the shearing shed
10:43Where did the name Karinia come from?
10:47Karinia is an Aboriginal word meaning happy peaceful home
10:50Right
10:51Family with three kids not always so peaceful
10:54Bedtime never happy
10:56But where else would you want to raise your kids?
10:59It works
11:00Yeah it does
11:02Did you ever think you'd be opening your property up to the public as a farmstay?
11:08In a word no definitely not
11:10But I also didn't think I'd be 40 years old when I realised what I wanted to be when I was a grown up
11:15And what is that?
11:17What I'm doing
11:18Look I love it, I love sharing my farm
11:20This is your calling
11:21Yeah
11:22It's an environment where guests truly are made to feel right at home
11:28I'm very impressed with your veggie garden
11:31Now who is Bob?
11:32Bob is one of our long time guests who's been coming here for years
11:37And so he's created this for you?
11:39He has, it's fabulous isn't it?
11:41The guest that keeps giving
11:43Yes, absolutely
11:44How many chooks have you got?
11:48Oh I've got a few
11:49Just enough I guess to supply most, quite a few of the businesses
11:54Right from Hebel down through to Walgett
11:56Bet they love you
11:57They do, they do
11:58Most of the time I can't keep up with egg demand
12:00Really?
12:01They know that the eggs that they get from us are straight from the chooks farm
12:05They know exactly that they are real eggs
12:08They're every shape, size and colour as they should be
12:11They are animals, they're not machines
12:14And that's the way I like it
12:16Now for Jo and Jacinda this is just the daily grind
12:21But for many visitors it is a world away from their everyday
12:26Why did you want to bring your children here, your family?
12:29We live in Brisbane so we're in the city
12:32We do have a couple of backyard chooks which they love
12:36So they love animals and they want to know
12:38We need to teach them about the farm and where our food comes from
12:42And give them a taste of the farm lifestyle
12:48There is so much room, as far as the eye can see
12:52To set up camp and have complete seclusion
12:56But if you would like to ditch the swags and spoil yourself rotten
13:00You know you deserve it
13:01Then Jacinda and Jo have you well and truly covered
13:09This is a bit flash
13:11I wasn't expecting this
13:13How lovely
13:14How lovely
13:15How lovely to just come in here and chill out
13:17And look
13:18These are the bickies
13:20Made from the eggs
13:21Straight from the chooks
13:23Oh, Jacinda mentioned
13:24This is lovely
13:32These glamping tents inject luxury into a remote outback stay
13:38Every detail has been thought of
13:40To make sure
13:41It is a farm stay
13:42You will never forget
13:44For me
13:46This is my favourite time of the day
13:50This is when an outback farm stay
13:54I think really comes into its own
13:56When the sun goes down and the stars come out
13:58And you know when people talk about big sky country
14:01This is it
14:02This is what they are talking about
14:04There is nothing that you can hear
14:08Other than mother nature
14:10And the crackle of a good campfire
14:12This to me
14:14This to me
14:15Is bliss
14:24The locals call this the Flurio Peninsula
14:26But please
14:27You can't bastardise a name like that
14:30It's the Flurio
14:31It's a beautiful word
14:33It sounds like
14:34A cross between flower and flourish or something
14:37It's an area of mellow Mediterranean magnificence
14:40Named after Charles-Pierre Clare de Flurio
14:44Whom I might add
14:46The history books describe as the eminent French wanderer
14:49And of course
14:50Why wouldn't you?
14:52Hey Davo
14:53Where are you going mate?
14:55I too can be an eminent wanderer
15:00The Flurio Peninsula
15:01About a 40 minute drive south of Adelaide
15:04Is an undeniably intoxicating brew of wine, country charm
15:08Big sky scenery
15:10And gobsmacking Southern Ocean coastline
15:16Before Australia was federated
15:18And South Australia was still a colony
15:20This area was a huge exporter of wheat
15:23Today
15:24This is all that remains
15:26Of the massive Port Wollonga wheat jetty
15:30In July 1888
15:32Friday the 13th mind you
15:34The Star of Greece was dashed upon the seabed
15:37Just out here
15:38The Marine Board of the time investigated
15:40And determined that although drunkenness played no part
15:43The cause was a manifest want of skill
15:46Which makes me question the sensibility behind
15:49Naming the Star of Greece restaurant just there
15:52After such a disaster
15:54And particularly since
15:56It ain't a Greek restaurant
16:00The Star of Greece has been a staple on the Flurio Peninsula for over 20 years
16:05And with decades of experience making wine, drinking wine
16:09And connecting with the region's providors
16:12Owner Doug Govan's passion for keeping things local is contagious
16:16Yeah so we've got a ceviche kingfish here
16:19Which comes from the next Gulf over
16:21So around Port Lincoln way
16:22Calamari
16:23That comes straight out of the waters here
16:26And then you've got the whiting in front of you
16:28Yeah
16:29Which also comes from a little bit further south
16:32Mostly around Kangaroo Island
16:33So we're just so blessed with fresh produce like this
16:37While the food and wine at the Star of Greece attracts throngs of those people that like to call themselves foodies every week
16:44Port Wollonga's crystal clear water and sand are its main attraction
16:49And if you're looking to make more than a day trip
16:51The jetty overlooking the entire beach has the best views in the house
16:56The beds are plush and king size
16:59And the rooms dial up the open plan vibes all the way to 11
17:04However you choose to wander the Fleurieu be it hike, bike or saunter
17:12There is one part of this region that must be explored
17:16It's wine
17:24And while this may look like the most chillaxed lawn party ever
17:28This is down the rabbit hole
17:30One of the region's most popular cellar door and food experiences
17:33How was everything for you guys today?
17:36Enjoyed everything?
17:37Yeah
17:38The brainchild of Don Palumbo and his wife Elise Cook
17:41Wine tastings here are done on the top deck of the family's very own bus
17:46So this is a Chardonnay obviously
17:48That's our Chardonnay
17:49So it's a really fresh take on Chardonnay
17:51Really light, very crisp
17:53And the bus?
17:54We took a sabbatical, spent two years going around the country in our combi van
17:58And we used our combi as a tasting room while we did that
18:01So we were selling our wines to restaurants, bottle shops and grey nomads in caravan parks
18:07So that gave us the idea, let's create a bigger version
18:10And that's why he's sitting on a bus
18:12The wine and the atmosphere are only part of the happening here
18:18The food is all focused on local organic produce
18:21And four times a week Dom and his chefs roll out an authentic Italian food experience
18:26People sit down, they put their trust in us
18:33And we just bring food out into their heart's content basically
18:36It's so colourful, so fresh
18:38Well a lot of the produce is fresh out of our garden
18:40And what doesn't come from our garden comes off of all our beautiful local farms
18:45And it's really important to us
18:47Organic, locally sourced produce is so important to us
18:50Coming up next, you and I are enjoying the sights and delights of Portugal
19:07When I travel to a new country I really like to immerse myself
19:11And when I say immerse myself I mean really immerse myself
19:28Welcome back to Getaway
19:30And scenic's unforgettable Doro river cruise
19:34A journey that is so far well and truly living up to its name
19:39Slowly meandering our way along the Doro river aboard scenic azure
19:48Is definitely one of the most relaxing ways to travel
19:55Each day a new port of call awaits
19:58And today it's Regua
20:01A charming town often regarded as the gateway to the Doro valley
20:05One of the joys of travelling by ship is being able to explore some of Portugal's less discovered regions
20:16So Inish, how do I pronounce the name of this town?
20:19Ucaña
20:20Ucaña
20:21Yes
20:22And the Romans were the first ones to be here
20:23Exactly, the Romans, they were the first ones to start producing wine in this region
20:28According to some archaeological excavations
20:31So we've got them to thank for the wine
20:33Absolutely, they were the first ones
20:41When was this bridge built?
20:42This bridge was built in the 14th century
20:45And this was the very first tall bridge we had in our country
20:50When we were walking through I noticed all these marks on each stone
20:54Yes
20:55What do they represent?
20:56They were signature of the stone masons
20:59Because at the time they would be paid in the end of the day
21:03According to the number of stones they would place
21:06So they got paid per stone?
21:08Exactly
21:09So that was like their invoice, right?
21:10Their invoice at the time, that's true
21:12This entire region holds a wealth of historical riches
21:27But the pinnacle is here in Lamego
21:31This town, Lamego, it's really an important town to Portuguese people
21:36Absolutely, Lamego it is a monumental town
21:40It is the place in Portugal with the greatest concentration of monuments per square meters
21:46But this one is the most magnificent of them all
21:49It's breathtaking
21:50It is indeed
21:54This is one of the most important monuments
21:57Baroque architecture style we have in this area of the country
22:02They really make you work for it too with all these stairs
22:05Absolutely, this is to be close to the heaven
22:08So that's the reason why the shrines, they were located at the top of the hills
22:14The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies is a striking 18th century Baroque church
22:20Visited by pilgrims from around the world
22:23I'm feeling the burn
22:25But it's so worth it
22:27It is indeed
22:29Back aboard scenic azure, an afternoon on the sun deck, lazing about in the vitality pool
22:42Is the perfect way to really soak up the European summer
22:46When I travel to a new country, I really like to immerse myself
22:50And when I say immerse myself, I mean really, immerse myself
23:02From ancient ruins to vines as far as the eye can see
23:06Portugal's Douro Valley is certainly delivering the goods at every turn
23:11Every day you can take the experience at your own pace
23:17Or sign up for one of several included scenic free choice tours
23:22So come alive
23:24Like today's guided tour of a palace and gardens
23:29That may just look a little familiar
23:32I do recognise this from the wine label
23:36Yes, actually you are looking to the image of the Mathieu Rosé wine label
23:44Actually it is a Baroque palace from the first half of the 18th century
23:50Designed by an Italian architect
23:53Casa de Matus was completed way back in 1744
23:57Becoming a heritage site in the 1970s
24:01The family had a noble title
24:04And the first born in each generation
24:06Was the administrator of the state and the house
24:10After how many generations?
24:12We are talking about right now 14th generations
24:19The palace and its gardens are a striking statement of wealth
24:23And centuries of Portuguese history
24:27So where exactly did you take your inspiration from?
24:30Our inspiration came from the Versailles Palace in France
24:34That is probably the most iconic symbol of Baroque in all the world
24:39This is just glorious
24:41Yes, and this is one of the main inspirations of the Versailles Palace gardens
24:47You can find a lot of shapes from that place in here
24:57The meticulously maintained gardens are matched by the lavish palace interiors
25:02What a joy it is travelling through this beautiful region
25:17Drinking in views like this
25:19For such a small country
25:21Portugal delivers big time

26:13Still to come, fun in the sun in northern Queensland
26:17I'm chartering my own private yacht
26:20In one of the most beautiful destinations in Australia
26:24Plus, we're going outback Hawaiian style
26:28Look at this
26:29We have a fire set up
26:30With a view
26:31Not a bad afternoon at all
26:33I know what you're thinking
26:37You would love nothing more than packing your bags and coming here to the beautiful Whitsundays and boarding your very own luxury yacht
26:58Now, it does pose a couple of challenges for most of us though
27:02Number one, you may not have a luxury yacht
27:04And number two, you may not have a lot of boating experience
27:07Well, up here in Queensland, Whitsunday Escape has been taking boat lovers and giving them the experience of a lifetime
27:15This sleek vessel is ours for the next few days
27:2143 feet worth of power boat
27:24Whose sole purpose is to give you unparalleled access to this stunning part of Australia
27:33It's a great way to see the Whitsundays
27:35You have total freedom to go where you want to go and see the places that you want to see
27:40The main thing that we want from our charter is a basic understanding of chart and compass
27:46And then the rest of it, we show you guys the ropes
27:49How to operate the boat
27:51Where to go around the Whitsundays
27:52All those great snorkel spots
27:54The Whitsundays Escape team will teach you everything you need to know to safely skip at the boat
28:00You don't need a licence, but a bit of boating experience will come in handy
28:05A lot of the feedback we get is the wildlife is amazing
28:09Yeah, the fish, manta rays, turtles, all that really cool stuff
28:13It's whale season at the moment, so it's, yeah, it's fantastic
28:20The Whitsundays earned its name from Captain Cook back in 1770
28:25Made up of 74 picture-perfect islands
28:29Many of them surrounded by pristine white sandy beaches and sparkling coral reefs
28:35This one, Whitehaven Beach, has been crowned one of the most beautiful beaches in the world
28:42We're heading out around the Whitsundays Islands now
28:45And I thought I'd just show you around the vessel so you know what you're going to get as part of the experience
28:50This is obviously a wheelhouse and this whole area here, this is another entertaining area
28:56The living area downstairs is spacious and airy
29:02And there's everything you'll need to cook your own meals
29:05The cat comfortably fits my travelling companions and myself
29:11With two comfy double rooms and a master suite
29:14The bathrooms are well set out too, with plenty of room
29:19But I've got to say, if you can get away from your friends and family for just a moment
29:23Come back up here to the wheelhouse
29:25And that right there on the daybed has got to be the best spot on the boat
29:30Being in charge of the boat is all about exploring
29:37But you also have regular radio access back to Whitsunday Escape Base
29:42This is Castaway, Castaway on 82
29:45If you need any help with choosing an anchorage
29:47Or any other nautical bits and pieces
29:50One of the great things about this kind of holiday is that
29:54You've got this whole area of the Whitsundays to explore
29:58So, wherever your family or friends want to go
30:00You can head off, you can stay there as long as you want
30:03I'll take you to my island
30:05Hold on, my friends!
30:07Let's get away, get away from it all
30:10Langford Island, which sits just off Heyman
30:13Is one of those iconic islands that encapsulates everything good about the Whitsundays
30:19At low tide, its long sandy spit emerges from the water
30:28Giving you great access as well as a chance to stretch your legs and have some fun
30:35One of the huge draw cards of the Whitsundays
30:38Is that the water temp sits around 24 degrees all year round
30:43Three, two, one
30:45And so no matter what time of year you come, there's always a chance to get wet
30:52What do you think's the best part of an experience like this, especially for people who are coming on holidays?
30:58I think the vast amount of opportunities in order to snorkel, swim
31:03Check out all your bucket list items that you've had
31:06You know, Whitehaven Beach is a bucket list for me
31:09Hill Inlet, you see it on TV all the time
31:12And to be able to come up here and have this holiday, it's amazing
31:17Well, I think everyone agrees it's a pretty amazing place up here
31:20So cheers and thank you for sharing their experience with me as well guys
31:24Cheers
31:25Cheers
31:26Looking forward to the rest of it
31:27After the break, we've got the magic of Europe
31:40I'm going to say this with love
31:42I feel like I'm on the set of a Disney movie
31:45Welcome back to our scenic river cruise through central Europe
32:00So after leaving Slovakia, scenic Amber has cruised gently through the night to deliver us to Vienna
32:07Giving us a whole day to explore any way we see fit
32:14Another day, another country
32:17But our beloved Danube has delivered us to Austria and its capital Vienna
32:22And believe it or not, I am right on the edge of the city here
32:25The Viennese absolutely love their green spaces
32:28They are known for their great lifestyle
32:30And they've really mastered being able to marry the old with the new
32:35So, let's get out amongst it
32:37Let's get the heart rate going
32:38I see
32:42Well, it's no secret that Vienna's cultural resume is as grand as its architecture
32:48But beyond its boulevards and concert halls
32:50This is also a city with its handlebars firmly in the 21st century
32:55So, I have opted to start the day on two wheels
33:03Marco
33:04Yes
33:05What have you got planned for us for today?
33:08Today I have for you this beautiful island
33:12Which is 24 kilometres long
33:14It's lovely
33:15Literally you will feel like you are in nature
33:17That we are hundreds of kilometres away from the city
33:20But it's in the middle of the city
33:22Built in the 1970s, Danube Island was originally designed to safeguard Vienna from flooding
33:29But today it is one of Europe's most successful examples of urban green space planning
33:37And I love it
33:39How beautiful of a swan
33:41Leaving the cycle paths of Danube Island behind
33:45We're headed for the hills
33:47And right in the heart of it is this place
33:52Oh my goodness
33:55This is impressive
33:57And it's immaculate
33:59It's so clean
34:00Very well maintained
34:04Well this is Klosterneuburg Abbey
34:06Which literally means Newcastle Abbey
34:09It's nothing new about it
34:11Because it was founded in the early 12th century
34:18It was founded in 1114 by Saint Leopold
34:22The story is that when he and his wife Agnes were married
34:26Her wedding veil blew away
34:28And some years later he found it in a mulberry tree
34:33And he decided then to build the Abbey
34:36The Abbey
34:44Wow!
34:45What a beautiful day we've had
34:46I've loved every second
34:47And as magic hour descends on Vienna
34:50What better way to usher in the evening
34:52Than with a private concert
34:54Arranged exclusively for us guests
34:57At the iconic Halle Lichtenstein
35:00Are you in a good mood tonight?
35:08We're all dressed in our finest
35:10The concert is about to start
35:12Our performers are here
35:14Let the show begin
35:15Thank you
35:16Thank you
35:45Today we are exploring one of the most gorgeous regions on the journey,
36:02Austria's wonderful Macau Valley.
36:06Kicking the day off right here in Krems.
36:08I'm going to say this with love, I feel like I'm on the set of a Disney movie.
36:20Do you think Walt Disney came here before he created Disneyland?
36:24No, we created Disneyland.
36:27You were first. This is just so perfect though.
36:29The thing is, Krems is an incredibly old town.
36:33And we even have pre-historical findings here.
36:36A little figurine, for example, that is 36,000 years old.
36:40So the region always was settled by mankind because the conditions here were ideal.
36:47The Wachau Valley is some of the most fertile ground in Austria.
36:52For thousands of years, people have walked these hills,
36:57farmed these fields and pressed grapes into wine.
37:01The winemakers here have had to carve steep terraces right into the hillsides to grow their wines.
37:08Machinery cannot be used on these here slopes.
37:12So nearly everything, from the pruning to the harvest, is done by hand.
37:16Wine is a plant that can withstand harsh growing conditions.
37:21Real good wine wants to be challenged in the vineyard.
37:24You want to have poor soil.
37:26You want to have pure rock underneath.
37:28You want to have the plant somehow struggling.
37:31Because that ends up in a very, very high fruit quality.
37:35The Wachau Valley is famed for its Rieslings and Gruner, Veltliner wines.
37:41And what are we sampling today?
37:44We are sampling something different in the first moment.
37:46It's Muscatella.
37:47And this is a more fruity wine.
37:49Fruity and delicious in the direction of elderflowers in the nose.
37:54And more grapey in the end.
37:58Oh, that's lovely.
37:59And light.
38:00Yes.
38:01And crisp.
38:02Yeah, refreshing is probably the best.
38:04Liquid sunshine with a breeze.
38:06Yes.
38:07With a little cherry on top.
38:08That's what it is.
38:09Discover the Danube in depth.

38:55Coming up next, Hawaii's cowboy country.
38:58You're going to have to take care of me today.
39:00Can you guarantee me that, please?
39:01She says she'll do her best.
39:02The entire state of Hawaii is jam-packed with beautiful sights.
39:14And generally, it's the coastal locations that get all the glory.
39:17But Hawaii is also home to some incredible ranches and its fair share of cowboys and cowgirls.
39:23The sun is shining and I feel so good.
39:26We're at the edge of Oahu's famous North Shore, an area known for its world-renowned surf beaches.
39:32But today, we're exploring a much lesser-known slice of Hawaiian history.
39:37Good day for it.
39:40So Gunstock Ranch started in 1973.
39:43It was a sugar cane plantation until 1971.
39:47When the mill shut down on the island, it became Gunstock in 1973.
39:51Right.
39:51So when people come to Hawaii, you sort of think sand, sand, surf.
39:55Yeah, people just think of Hawaii, like you said, as the oceans and the beaches.
39:59But we have such an incredible landscape out here with the mountains and the ranges and the ridges.
40:05And incredible hiking.
40:06We're all past cows.
40:08Yeah.
40:08So we are working cattle ranch out here.
40:10So.
40:11There's plenty of ways to explore the ranch, with trail rides for all ages and abilities.
40:20But it's the ATV tours that give guests access to Gunstock's signature experience.
40:27All right.
40:29So this is our planting spot for the day.
40:31We're going to be planting milo trees today.
40:34A great native species here in Hawaii.
40:36So part of this ranch is purely dedicated to replanting native plants.
40:43Yes, exactly.
40:44So Gunstock Ranch has about 1,000 acres out here total.
40:47And we've dedicated 500 of that to this reforestation program.
40:52Perfect.
40:52It's coming.
40:53Yep, great.
40:54Plot them right down there in the ground.
40:57Great job.
40:58And again, just keep pressing nice and good down into the ground.
41:01So now that I've put them into the ground.
41:04Yes.
41:04This is my tree.
41:05That's your tree forever.
41:07So the really cool thing about the trees that we can plant here is we're going to put a
41:11little tracking device in the ground with your tree.
41:14And you'll be able to track its growth.
41:16And then in years to come, one year, two years, three years, however many years down the road,
41:20you can come back and visit the specific tree.
41:23Oh, I love that.
41:24So I can come back and visit my tree.
41:26Absolutely.
41:27I've got to think of a name for my tree.
41:29You do.
41:30Yes.
41:31You wouldn't expect tree planting to be a spiritual experience.
41:34But here at Gunstock, that's exactly what it is.
41:37And the Hawaiians have a word called mana.
41:40So it's your spirit.
41:41And when we transfer the water, it's going to run through your hands into the roots of
41:48your tree.
41:48And that's going to be transferring your mana and your spirit into your tree.
41:52This is such an experience, honestly.
41:56Like, I don't want to leave him.
42:00I just want to stay here and watch him grow.
42:04After a bit of thought, I thought, you know what?
42:06I'm going to name it after Mum.
42:08It's called the Jackie tree.
42:09Oh, big Jackie, you've got this.
42:15As well as allowing us to channel Owen a nature warrior, the ATB is the quickest way to get
42:20around this vast property.
42:22So we're headed up to the lookout spot.
42:24And this is that ocean view that everybody that comes out to Hawaii is looking for.
42:28That's what I'm looking for.
42:29It's going to be stunning.
42:34Are you kidding me?
42:36So this is our lookout spot.
42:38It's a beautiful, beautiful area here.
42:41This is the very start of our north shore of Oahu here.
42:44So that's the north shore.
42:45That's where all the surfing happens.
42:46Exactly.
42:47Yeah.
42:47So Pipeline is the biggest surf spot here.
42:49It's just about 10 minutes down the road from us.
42:51You've got the ocean.
42:52You've got the mountain ranges.
42:53You've got absolutely everything that is the beauty of Hawaii right here in front of us.
42:58And if you thought the scenery was spectacular from an ATV, we'll wait until you've experienced
43:05it on horseback.
43:13Well, this is your pretty girl today.
43:15What's her name?
43:16And this is Cedar.
43:18Cedar.
43:19Hi.
43:19How are you?
43:20You're going to have to take care of me today.
43:22Can you guarantee me that, please?
43:24Okay.
43:24She says she'll do her best.
43:25How did this place become Gunstock Ranch?
43:33So the story is actually really fun.
43:35Dr. Max Smith was actually the state veterinarian.
43:38And his favourite horse was I'm a Gunstock Rebel.
43:43And so from that horse came the name Gunstock Ranch.
43:46Exactly.
43:48Kentie, how many horses do you have here at Gunstock Ranch?
43:51So actually, in our herd that we use for the trail ride, there's about 60 of them.
43:55And the really cool thing is about 20 of those were actually born and raised here.
43:58They're out of that Gunstock flood line.
44:00Look at this view.
44:05Isn't this amazing?
44:06We have a fire set up with a view.
44:09Not bad, right?
44:11Not a bad afternoon at all.
44:13You show me how it's done.
44:15You gotta just, uh, either rotate here.
44:19Oh.
44:21Oh, yeah.
44:22Oh, yeah.
44:23That's what it's about.
44:24That's life right there.
44:25Kenzie, I've got to say, this is not how I picture an ending my day on the North Shore,
44:29but I could not imagine a better ending.
44:31Cheers, legend.
44:31Cheers.
44:36I hope that you've enjoyed travelling with us.
44:39Next week, we have the magnificent Top End.
44:42Honestly, this is just one of those pinch-yourself moments.
44:45Plus, you and I, we are visiting paradise.
44:48I can officially tick off the bucket list I have made friends with a turtle.
44:53Well, okay then, bon voyage and happy new year.
44:57I got to get away.
