00:13remember the former commander in an atmosphere of mourning and religious devotion.
00:19During the ceremony, Iranian President Masoud Pesekian highlighted Soleimani's figure
00:24as a living role model for freedom seekers and defenders of justice.
00:28Pesekian also condemned the United States and Israel for perpetrating state terrorism
00:34under the pretext of civilization, democracy and supposed freedom.
00:40The president stated that they are targeting those seeking global freedom such as Soleimani,
00:46engineer Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, scientists, military commanders and other prominent figures.
00:58Qasem Soleimani was born on March 12 of 1957 and grew up in a peasant family in southeastern Iran's Kerman province.
01:09It was with the 1980s Iran-Iraq war that Soleimani quickly emerged as an important military figure
01:16in the newly established Islamic Republic.
01:19And between 1997 and 1998, he took command of the Quds forces, an elite unit in charge of protecting the revolution
01:26beyond Iran's border.
01:28He was killed on January 3, 2020, by a U.S. strike that had been ordered by President Donald Trump
01:36at Baghdad's international airport in an attack denounced as a violation of international law
01:41and described by Iran as an act of state terrorism.
