08:48happened and we had kind of bitched about each other in print.
08:51There was some kind of an event I had attended at a place in Bandra, which was a kind of a

08:55At Seijos.
08:55It was like a pseudo-intellectual gathering.
08:58And I don't know what I was doing there.
09:00And I walked in, I felt there were a hundred heads that turned that all wanted to kill me.
09:04Because they all represented, they were all those people, like, you know, who've made
09:07like films that haven't released or like, or like films that are actually changing the
09:12face of Indian cinema, but are not kind of making any mark.
09:14And I walked in, I walked in and I felt like, I felt like they were going to kill me.
09:19And of course, the brand ambassador of that movement was there, Anurag Kashyam.
09:23And we met each other.
09:24We came face to face.
09:25And I looked at him and he said,

18:28place in cinema, which is fantastic.
18:30But domestically, the scenario commercially is very different from the kind of cinema
18:34that you endorse.
18:35For example, the, you know, the mega movie blockbusters, which are like, say, the Dhoom,
18:40Chennai Express, Krish.
18:41These are multiple kind of horror films, but very different from the ethos of the cinema
18:46you make.
18:47So, when you see a movie, like movies like this perform the way they do, do you have
18:51a sense of resentment?
18:53I used to have.
18:54Or do you have a sense of like, like feeling helpless that I can't do this?
18:58No, no, no.
18:58Because clearly you can't.
19:00I absolutely can't do that.

19:03And there was a resentment earlier on when we were more idealistic and there was a complete
19:07lack of understanding of economics and how things work.
19:09And today I understand that, okay, I might not see the movie or I might not like the
19:15movie, but it is because of movies, these tentpole movies that make so much money, is
19:21why I also get to make films.
19:23Because I'm funded by the same studio.
19:25The money is being recycled into my own film.
19:27And it is because of these movies that get recycled that we can release those other movies
19:32that we're making.
19:33When we say resentment, there's also the other side of things.
19:36Do you feel like the gangs of Wasaypur, pun intended, the gangs of people who've made
19:42cinema with you, who kind of endorsed your brand of cinema, now feel a certain resentment
19:46that maybe you kind of left that team and you're kind of being bitten by the commercial
19:50bar.
19:50A lot of people think I've sold out.
19:52A lot of people think that Andhra has changed sides.
19:54But the fact is...
19:55Suddenly you're in the face, you know, you're media savvy, you know, you're all over the
19:59place, you're a brand in the country, you're on coffee with Garan.
20:02So it's a totally different scenario for you.
20:05Does it suddenly feel that you've kind of like stabbed them in their cinematic back?
20:08I don't feel like that.
20:10I don't feel like that because, see, the thing is, over a period of time, the understanding
20:15that has come, also there's a truth.
20:16You know, I was fighting my own battle.

20:18I was never picking up a flag and saying that, you know, I will, we are trying to change
20:24everything.

20:26And everybody I believed in, I would endorse them.

20:45make films that make money for us to give us that kind of strength.

20:54cinema to them.
20:55It's like how when we showed you Lunchbox and we came to you.

20:59Because I know I can't do that for Lunchbox what you can do for Lunchbox.

21:04And it was very important that Lunchbox reaches out to those people.
21:07And find a wider audience.

21:09When we talk about resentment, we talk about like, you know, internal envy, jealousy, competition, ambition.
