00:00Why don't we just use a boat?
00:04This is awesome!
00:06It's definitely larger than the pictures.
00:09That is impressive.
00:11This boat weighs close to 13,000 pounds.
00:14I'm a little nervous.
00:16We got a bunch of wannabe pirates that never even been on a boat.
00:19I want to unwrap the steering wheel.
00:20And no instructions.
00:21All right, here we go!
00:24Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!
00:25It's tipping!
00:26Don't let it fall!
00:27The starboard side needs scrubbing.
00:29Walk the plank, Captain.
00:32One, two, three.
00:35How'd you do that?
00:36No way!
00:37That's amazing.
00:42My given name is Jared Cappy.
00:44But everyone calls me Cappy.
00:46This is probably one of the coolest things I've ever done.
00:49Everyone, Claire?
00:50I've been a professional builder for over 15 years.
00:53Woo-hoo!
00:54But a few years ago, I teamed up with my daughter, Alex.
00:57Whoa!
00:58It looks so good in here.
01:00We specialize in transforming unconventional objects.
01:03Whoa!
01:04I'm awake now!
01:06What if we did use a plane?
01:07Wait, really?
01:08All right, Alex.
01:09It's all yours.
01:10Into one-of-a-kind creations.
01:12Oh, my God.
01:13It's so amazing.
01:14It's so amazing.
01:16And we get to do it for our favorite people.
01:18Love you, man.
01:19I love you.
01:20Oh, my God.
01:21Look at that.
01:22Look at that.
01:23Look at that.
01:24But the best part...
01:25...is we get to do it together.
01:27It's so vast out here.
01:43It's pretty.
01:44It looks like the ocean.
01:46Like the waves.
01:47I do like how the wind moves the grass like that.
01:50It's cool.
01:51Mm-hmm.
01:52You're good on GPS?
01:53You know where we're going?
01:54Yep.
01:55So I got the coordinates from that couple that called Joe and Mandy.
01:58They own all this land, but live elsewhere on the property.
02:01We're going to a different spot.
02:03They said it was pretty open.
02:05It's open.
02:06It's just...
02:07It's a little bit in the middle of nowhere.
02:09All I know is they love being outdoors with family and friends.
02:13And they're interested in some kind of off-grid getaway spot.
02:16Cool.
02:17God, this is big.
02:19I thought our place was big.
02:20This is big.
02:21We're almost there.
02:24All right, I'm going to need that hat back.
02:26Well, I have mine.
02:30Oh, you want me to wear yours?
02:32Yeah.
02:36You look very pretty.
02:38I feel very pretty.
02:43Actually, Cap, I think I want mine back.
02:46I don't want it to get all sweat-stainy.
02:48That seems fair.
02:51Hi.
02:52What a gorgeous place.
02:53I know.
02:54Hi.
02:55Nice to meet you.
02:56Awesome.
02:57This is incredible.
02:58This is our favorite place on the property.
03:01I can see why.
03:02Yes.
03:05We, in general, have always been outdoorsy,
03:07whether we're mountain biking, boating, camping with our kids.
03:12Outside is where we get our zen.
03:14Outdoors is huge for me.
03:15I lived up in Alaska.
03:16It's very much what I love.
03:19What brought you to South Dakota?
03:20Good friend of mine.
03:21Her family has a ranch.
03:23We came up to help on the ranch, and I instantly fell in love.
03:28It had all the open space that I love so much.
03:32And her family is amazing.
03:34Her dad, Dale, he was just a very loving and embracing family man.
03:39He did pass away, but he was the inspiration for getting us here.
03:44Oh, that's cool.
03:45Mm-hmm.
03:46Yeah.
03:47Very, very special in South Dakota.
03:48So, friends drew us here, and then how can you not love this place?
03:51Yeah, absolutely.
03:52Right?
03:53So, tell us what we can do for you.
03:55We want something that feels vacation.
03:57Good.
03:58Something unique, of course, because we called you.
04:01What does, like, a vacation look like for y'all?
04:04With friends, we probably had more fun lamping, like, when we had a houseboat.
04:09Tell me about that.
04:10How fun.
04:11Had it for 13 years, and we enjoyed the heck out of it.
04:15Oh, fun.
04:16Yeah.
04:19This place is full of views and big sky, and that's what we would like to share with friends.
04:26Joe loves the water.
04:27I loved getting together with friends, having that open space, the stars, all of that.
04:33But it's now a time where we like to be close to home.
04:37So, it's mainly a space for you and friends, and to have family, to unplug and not have
04:42to worry about anything else.
04:43Correct.
04:44Right.
04:45Okay.
04:46Something close by, but feel like we're a million miles away.
04:49Okay.
04:50Yeah.
04:51That's it.
04:52All right.
04:53Well, I'm good if you don't have any questions.
04:54Yeah, I'm good.
04:55You mind if we poke around for a little bit?
04:56No.
04:57No.
04:58Yeah, feel free.
04:59We're gonna dip this one in sunscreen, and then we'll...
05:00All right.
05:03Nice to meet you.
05:04It's nice to meet you.
05:06Awesome.
05:08So, we got big fans of adventure.
05:09Yes.
05:10Being outside, being in nature.
05:11Mm-hmm.
05:12I think it's cool they lived on a houseboat.
05:13That sounds super fun.
05:14Mm-hmm.
05:15I suppose my question is, do we wanna match the prairie, or do we wanna match their love
05:29for the water?
05:30I don't know.
05:31Like, well, so what are the options?
05:32So, we could do a sod house.
05:33So, we could do a sod house.
05:34Or a log cabin.
05:35We could do a grain bin.
05:37That would be cool, but could we try to push the envelope a little bit and do, like,
05:42the total opposite?
05:45Because they love the water.
05:46So, what if we did something that kind of took this very flat land and totally snapped
05:52it?
05:53Okay.
05:54So, then how about we do a lighthouse?
05:56Yeah.
05:57Oh, for real?
05:58Yeah.
05:59That would look so funny out here.
06:01What would we make it out of?
06:02I don't know.
06:03Because we could frame it.
06:04We couldn't make it out of, like, brick or anything.
06:06That's ridiculous.
06:07What about we could do, like...
06:09Wait, wait, wait.
06:10Why don't we just use a boat?
06:14Dude, we should totally use a boat.
06:16And we were talking about how out here it looks like waves.
06:20Good point.
06:21The grass was looking like waves.
06:23I mean, we put an RV in a tree, so why not a boat in a field?
06:27You used to have a friend with a sailboat, right?
06:29Yeah, yeah.
06:30Often, when I would go out on the sailboat, we had a slit that we'd park the boat in at
06:36the marina.
06:37So, I wonder if we could model it off of the slit.
06:40Oh, like, put a boat with a deck around it?
06:42Yeah.
06:43Oh, that'd be so cool.
06:45Because then you got your sitting, hanging out spot out of the grass.
06:48They would freak.
06:49I wonder if we could do a sailboat or something that would have a cabin inside for them and
06:55their friends to sleep.
06:56So, something like this?
06:58Yeah.
06:59Sailboats have a keel.
07:01How would you do that?
07:03I mean, we could either build up or go down.
07:05Or, like, dig a hole?
07:06Mm-hmm.
07:07Because then it would look like it was parked at the slip, and then the water disappeared.
07:11Mm-hmm.
07:12I don't know if we would want to do...
07:15This is awesome!
07:16Dude, I love this so much!
07:18You're gonna come over this hill, this grass-flowing happiness, and there's gonna be a sailboat.
07:23We're 100% finding a sailboat.
07:25This is the most fun part, is because I get to see how excited you are.
07:31Dude!
07:32This build's gonna be a blast.
07:34We're creating an ocean-going escape right here in the middle of the prairie for our adventure-loving
07:39clients, Joe and Mandy.
07:41At the heart of this is a real sailboat that'll be lowered into the ground so it looks like
07:45it's floating on waves of grass.
07:47Around it, we'll craft a custom deck, or slip, that doubles as the perfect hangout spot for family and friends.
07:54Inside, we'll turn the cabin into a cozy retreat, with spaces to cook, sleep, and host,
08:00or to tuck away and feel a million miles away from everything.
08:05The tricky part is, we don't know much about big sailboats, which means a lot of this build is uncharted waters for us.
08:12But hey, we'll figure it out together.
08:15And then I have a lot of ideas in terms of deck and what we want to do for entertainment,
08:20where it should even sit, so I can run home and sketch that up.
08:24Love it.
08:33Coming up with ideas is the easy part.
08:35Finding a sailboat in a landlocked state like South Dakota is much harder.
08:41Sprout and I spent several days searching, researching, texting, calling.
08:48Like this?
08:50But everything was either too big.
08:53Wow.
08:54Aw, it's so cute.
08:56Or too small.
08:57Yeah, that's not gonna work.
08:59Mm-hmm.
09:00Yes.
09:01Or too far away.
09:02Michigan?
09:03Pass.
09:05We're just not a sailboat.
09:06Is that purple?
09:08Hello?
09:09Hi.
09:10But then, after a lot of digging...
09:12I did call earlier.
09:13I wanted to...
09:14We landed on the perfect vessel.
09:15Okay.
09:16Great.
09:18I think I found it.
09:21I think I found it.
09:26Sprout tracked down a sailboat that's 32 feet long and eight feet wide,
09:30and apparently fully loaded with all the boaty things a boat's supposed to have.
09:34Now, I don't know much about that, but I do know that this one is nearby,
09:39which already makes it my kind of boat.
09:41Wow, that's like a legit sailboat.
09:43The owner's away, but he gave us the green light to go check it out.
09:47It's definitely larger than the pictures.
09:50It looks good.
09:51Uh-huh.
09:52The boat's 32-ish feet.
09:54Okay.
09:55That mast is another five feet on either side.
09:57That's a 40-foot mast.
09:59Holy catfish.
10:01Well, so this is all obviously rudder.
10:04Yeah.
10:05Little propeller.
10:06I was expecting there to be, like, cracks or something in it.
10:09Yeah.
10:10But there's not.
10:11I'm not loving those tires.
10:13Me neither.
10:14That's a bit scary.
10:15I think the only scary part about this boat is when it's on.
10:18Yikes.
10:19It doesn't have to go far.
10:21Mm-mm.
10:22Well, riddle me this.
10:23This trailer's on its last leg, so there's no other use for it.
10:26But it does provide a foundation for the boat, and the wheels could help us.
10:30What if we just dug a hole and just drove the trailer into it and parked it?
10:33It would just be, like, in the ground?
10:35Yeah, just dig a square hole, the size we need.
10:37Uh-huh.
10:38Take the skid steer, back this dude into the hole.
10:40Uh-huh.
10:41To the whatever level we decide, and then backfill the hole.
10:44So the boat and the trailer is buried.
10:46I'm good with that.
10:47Okay.
10:48Now, the tires will lose air over time, so I want to jack up the corners of the boat trailer
10:53and block them up, lifting the tires off the ground.
10:55Right.
10:56I tell you what, I'd like to look inside, kid.
10:57Okay.
10:58Why don't you go grab the truck and just pull it up next to it, and we can get off the bed.
11:03Okay.
11:04Sweet.
11:05Can you get it?
11:06I'm just worried about the stability of the boat.
11:07Oh, no, you go.
11:08Oh, no, it's on the trailer, kid.
11:09You're good.
11:10I mean, you go first, but...
11:11Love you.
11:12Love you.
11:13It's not bad.
11:14Well, that's, like, wood around it.
11:15Mm-hmm.
11:16Oh.
11:17It's not bad.
11:18Check it out.
11:19Oh, yeah.
11:20It's got a little galley and a cameraman and...
11:21Hi.
11:22Hi.
11:23It's got a little table and a little stove.
11:26Mm-hmm.
11:27How hot is it in there?
11:35Very hot.
11:36You're doing great.
11:38I don't know, kid.
11:39I like it.
11:40It looks good.
11:41I don't know anything about boat vehicles.
11:43I don't know.
11:44I'd like it.
11:45It looks good.
11:46I don't know anything about boats, but can I make it?
11:49I don't know anything about boats, but I know it's not beat up.
11:51The inside's good. It doesn't smell bad.
11:53There's no, like, junk and garbage and, like, rot and stuff in there.
11:56So that's good.
11:57Yeah, he said to just come check it out and make him an offer.
11:59So let's buy us a boat.
12:12Today's the day we're going to launch this sailboat on its voyage to its new home on the prairie.
12:19I'm mostly excited that in the middle of a landlocked state, we can build this boat retreat for Joe and Mandy.
12:29Right.
12:30I think the hatches have been battened down, the wind is in our favor, but the road ahead is bumpy.
12:38And I hope the wheels on this trailer will make it for one more journey.
12:42So the challenge is with this trailer, it's not designed to take this down the interstate or over the road.
12:51It's designed to move the boat from the water to its parking spot for the winter.
12:56So it's a pretty rough and tumble homemade trailer.
13:05Doesn't have lights, doesn't have anything like that, doesn't have a license plate, just has a hitch and four wheels.
13:11I'm hoping they don't fall off on the way to Joe and Mandy's.
13:19While I keep my eyes astern, Sprout, Tanner, and Dustin are carving out a hole that's about to become our ship's new harbor.
13:28We've got to go about 10 feet deep.
13:31We've got to build a ramp so we can back the sailboat into this pit.
13:36And that's the tricky part, because it's got to be nice and gradual.
13:48Slowly but surely, we made it to Joe and Mandy's property.
13:55We're on the final leg with our sailboat, its last journey.
14:00Where we ultimately decided to dock this boat is about a half a mile across a hayfield.
14:10And it's no road, it's just really sort of a rutted path that they use with the tractors to get in and out.
14:15It's not meant to travel like this.
14:19The worst thing that could happen, I guess, is this thing could fall off of its moorings.
14:23And we have a real problem.
14:26We're just going real slow.
14:27I can't lose it with a half a mile to go.
14:30This is literally three miles an hour.
14:36Dude, check it out.
14:37Here she comes.
14:39That is so cool.
14:41I like how you can't see his pickup yet.
14:43It just looks like the boat's sailing by itself through the grass.
14:46So this is the dream.
14:47To put a boat in the middle of the prairie with waves of grass.
14:51Yes.
14:54So the plan is to put a boat in a hole.
14:57That's the worst thing that could happen.
15:00That is impressive.
15:06It's big.
15:09Could you find a bigger boat?
15:12Dude, this trailer was not meant to drive that.
15:1632 foot.
15:17It's huge.
15:18The plan is we'll just get it lined up pretty close and disconnected.
15:21Then we'll just use the stinger on the skid steer to lower the boat into the hole.
15:24Okay.
15:25All right, questions, comments, concerns?
15:27Let's hope it works.
15:28Time to drop anchor.
15:30Jeez.
15:31All right.
15:35Sprout's skid steer skills get better every day.
15:38Mainly because I challenge her whenever I can.
15:41And moving this big boat into place is a perfect opportunity to build her confidence.
15:45Bring your own in, kiddo.
15:49Go back.
15:50Back up.
15:51Just a hair.
15:54Okay.
15:57Um, all right, how do you feel?
15:59I'm a little nervous.
16:04I've never buried a boat either.
16:05I don't think anything's going to happen, but if this thing shifts or if there's any sort
16:11of failure, you have to be stable.
16:13Because if you do this or your reaction is to, like, move your hands, it makes it worse.
16:19Right?
16:20So, if this boat wants to go, there's nothing you're going to do to save it.
16:25You're in the safest thing you can be in right now in that metal cage.
16:29Okay.
16:29I believe in you, kid.
16:30You got this.
16:31Okay.
16:32All right.
16:32So, I'm going to be watching Tanner.
16:33You're going to be watching me.
16:34We're just going to crawl her down.
16:39And that speed is perfect.
16:40Just crawl.
16:41It's, like, almost as slow as you can do it.
16:45Yep.
16:45Just a little bit this way.
16:48This boat weighs close to 13,000 pounds, which is a little bit more than the skid steer
16:53weighs.
16:53So, we have to bring this down real easy.
16:56All right.
16:56Keep coming straight.
17:01Right now, we're at a really good pitch.
17:03And when we get down to the bottom of the hole they dug, then this thing will level out,
17:07and we'll set the tongue right on the ground.
17:09Alex, why don't you turn towards Cappy a little bit?
17:13Yep.
17:14A little more.
17:15Okay.
17:15Okay.
17:16Come straight in.
17:18Only got this far to go.
17:19Okay.
17:20We only have a couple feet left, and we're trying to get it as close to centered in the hole
17:24as we can.
17:25Okay.
17:26Well...
17:26So, Sprout backed it in perfectly.
17:32Nice job, kiddo.
17:33The boat's at a good height, but now the problem is it's not level.
17:39The boat itself is tipped up here, and we want it to be here.
17:46So, we need to dig a little more dirt out from under this end of the trailer.
17:51Straight back.
17:51To make this happen, Sprout needs to back out with the skid steer, and I'll get in there
17:58with an excavator.
18:01I just have to worry about my guys in the hole.
18:04I don't want to bump the trailer, and I don't want to hit the mast.
18:08I think we're good over here.
18:09I would just jump back the body width, and then just try to get your teeth under here.
18:13Okay.
18:14So, our trick when we're setting this thing is we need to set it level, but there's nowhere
18:19to put a level on this boat.
18:21It's shaped like a banana.
18:24So, Sprout's spotting behind us, and she's the one telling us whether the front needs to
18:28go down or the back needs to go up.
18:30How's it look, kiddo?
18:31Two thumbs up.
18:35You got your boat.
18:36I know.
18:37Well, I think we have to rename it.
18:40I don't know.
18:40What do you think's a good name for a boat?
18:41Well, I feel like since it should be meaningful, we should name it after Joe and Mandy's friend
18:47Dale.
18:49I like it.
18:50Okay.
18:51Dale.
18:52Dale.
18:53Love it, kiddo.
19:03Mandy and Joe's ocean-themed escape is taking shape.
19:07We've successfully sunk our land yacht into the prairie.
19:10Now, we can frame up the dock around it.
19:13First order of business.
19:15Mark out where the deck posts will stand, which will anchor into these concrete blocks
19:19that sit on top of the ground.
19:21Hey, kiddo.
19:21You can just park that in front of the ramp.
19:22The reason they're shaped like that pyramid is the physics of spreading out the footprint.
19:36But before we place these foundation blocks, we need to figure out exactly where they should
19:43go.
19:43We wanted to have at least five feet of walkway so you could come up the stairs, walk down
19:50a nice deck, and then on the back of the boat is where the hangout's going to be, where you
19:53can sit and have chairs and all the things.
19:56But we want the decking to be right up against the boat.
19:58We don't want any gaps.
20:00So trying to draw this right-angle L-shape against a boat that is curved is a little bit
20:07of a challenge.
20:07So what we're going to do is take string lines in two directions and two axes.
20:11We'll use that to mark the peak of the hull's curve.
20:14From there, we can set the corners for our deck frame.
20:18Once the frame is up, we can cut the pieces of decking that'll hug the boat's shape.
20:21Have you thought about hitting it hard?
20:32Sure.
20:34Come on up.
20:35Come on up.
20:36Come on up.
20:37I've never missed yet.
20:44All right, kid.
20:45That's going to be our footprint.
20:46Straight and square.
20:48I'm feeling good about it.
20:51The sailboat came with just about everything, except an anchor.
21:08Now, I could search around antique shops or scrapyards, wood.
21:12But the best place to start, truck, is Cappy's growing boneyard.
21:18Section of truck, or treasure trove, as he calls it, at short grass.
21:25He's always tossing odds and ends into a pile until an inspiration strikes.
21:29One pile of gravel.
21:32While I'm looking, I'm going to start to organize things with an inventory of Cappy's collection.
21:37Don't know what this is.
21:41See drawing here.
21:44Not to scale.
21:45Back scratcher?
21:49Steel.
21:50I think it should work.
22:00And now comes the challenge.
22:02Figuring out how this anchor will fit into the build, and how I can make it look truly unique.
22:06Ahoy from the grassy seas of South Dakota.
22:20We're building a dock that'll surround our land yacht.
22:27So we're on the homestretch of our last pieces of deck framing.
22:30We're going to be onto deck boards today.
22:32Our goal today was just to get the framing done, and we're way ahead of schedule.
22:35These guys have rocked it.
22:39This deck, it's going to be solid.
22:41I don't think you could capsize this boat cap.
22:45Years ago, the crew coined the term capsized for any build that gets bigger and more elaborate as we go along.
22:52Oh, that is so big!
22:54This is a capsized greenhouse.
22:55As if we did just like double the size.
22:58Maybe we should think about doing a sprout-sized thing instead of a capsized thing.
23:02Normally, it's a good thing, but when you're working with a boat, not so much.
23:10We've never actually used that term in relation to a boat.
23:12That's fine.
23:13I like it.
23:14While Cappy, David, and Dustin get sweaty, I get creative.
23:22I'm going to paint something special, something interesting that we can add on our build.
23:26I'm envisioning this like as a part of the landscaping almost, where they'll walk up and it'll be anchoring the boat to the ground.
23:36I'm thinking I'll do like a rip curl where it is the start of the wave where it starts to break and have that white foam look.
23:44So, I'll start with this dark blue first and just work that on the bottom area.
23:52Maybe get that outline of the rip curl.
23:54I totally understand why Joe and Mandy love the ocean and love the water.
24:00I've been in the water since I was small.
24:02I started surfing when I was around five.
24:04And so, I'm hoping that we can help make sure that they feel the ocean out here in the middle of South Dakota.
24:13Okay, once I get this base structure down, I can work on the accents and then add the ocean spray.
24:22And then this will be ready for Joe and Mandy to drop anchor.
24:27While Sprout weighs the anchor, the boat's slip is moving full steam ahead.
24:37David, our master carpenter, curved the decking perfectly around the boat's hull.
24:43And now it's literally all hands on deck, making sure every board lines up ship shape as we fasten them down tight.
24:50Hi.
24:51Hey.
24:51So, we have like 90% of the deck boards on.
24:54We have about a dozen left to go.
24:55And then last thing we have for this deck is the stairs, right on the front end by the boat.
25:00And then next piece is to hang the mast up.
25:03Can I go now?
25:05Yeah.
25:11Joe and Mandy's boat-themed getaway is sailing right along.
25:15And today we're going to focus on the star of the show, the boat herself.
25:19First Order of Business is changing the name to something extra special for them.
25:23And Aunt Wren's on deck to give me a hand.
25:2759 and a half.
25:29What's half of 59 and a half?
25:32Uh, 29 and three quarters.
25:34Good.
25:34I sketched the new name onto transfer paper so we can trace the letters right onto the stern, giving us a perfect guide when it's time to paint.
25:46So, tell me about why we're putting a new name.
25:50So, Dale was a close family friend who inspired them to move to South Dakota.
25:56So, we thought it would be nice if we named it Dale.
25:59That's awesome.
26:01I think Joe and Mandy are going to love this.
26:04Yeah, everybody needs their private getaway space.
26:07I literally cannot see another house or man-made thing from here besides a fence.
26:15Yep.
26:16It's just prairie.
26:17That's awesome.
26:20Wren finishes up painting the name while I set a course back to town for an appointment to pick out deck furniture.
26:25Which means I'm skipping a stressful part of the build.
26:32Sure, parking a boat in the middle of a pasture checks the box for our one-of-a-kind builds.
26:38But it's not really a boat until the mast goes up.
26:41And since my boat knowledge is about as empty as the ocean out here, figuring that part out has my brain tied in knots.
26:47So, I was working on it in my head last night, how we're going to set this 36-foot mast up on the top of this boat.
26:56We've got a bunch of wannabe pirates that have never even been on a boat.
26:59I want to unwrap the steering wheel.
27:00What is it that called?
27:01The tiller or whatever?
27:03We've got a telehandler, not a crane.
27:04So, I only have 40 feet of reach, but I know the mast is 36 feet and no instructions.
27:08So, stay tuned.
27:11To pull this off, in addition to Wren, I've recruited three of my most trusted land lovers.
27:18There's a lot of brains on this right now.
27:20I think we have a plan to do it, but we're going to go get the telehandler and rig it up with a pick strap.
27:25And then we're going to pick this mast up and slide it back down in the hole.
27:28Cap, there is no hole.
27:31There's just a bracket.
27:32There's just a bracket and it sits right on top of it.
27:38Okay, so we're not exactly off to a flying start.
27:41And because nothing's ever simple, I also managed to forget a key piece of equipment.
27:46We're going to pick up the mast.
27:48We've got the machine to do it, but we don't have any of my lift straps.
27:50So, this rope, I'm going to cut it in half and I'm going to make a strap.
27:58I'm 11% sure this is going to work.
28:00That thing plugs into right here.
28:03Yeah.
28:04Then, of course, there's the question of how do we actually secure the mast once it's up.
28:09It just, I mean, so you've got these little cable deals.
28:12I don't care.
28:13Anything that bolts this thing together, what do we got down there?
28:15Nothing, man.
28:16Normally, I'd lean on years of building experience.
28:19And where's the boom that the sail goes out on?
28:21Oh, it's on the ground over there.
28:24But this time, it's all about how-to videos on the internet.
28:27Good call, Wren.
28:28So, the slot on the mast faces the stern, and then the furler attaches to the front, and
28:35then there's a couple of side arms that hold the sails front and back.
28:40Yeah.
28:41Easy peasy.
28:42Furler.
28:43Boom.
28:43Some turnbuckles.
28:44Flux capacitor.
28:45And let's stand a mast.
28:50I always say this job is like flying a plane as you build it, and it's never been truer than
28:55today.
28:56Except this time, it's a boat.
28:58You know what I mean.
29:01All right.
29:01You guys ready?
29:03I think so.
29:06All right.
29:07Here we go.
29:14The hardest part is we have to pick this up about the middle of the mast because we don't
29:19have enough reach to pick this up from the very top of the mast.
29:22So, we're going to pick it up, and the guys have to swing it under, and then we mount it
29:27in this plate on the top of this boat.
29:30Are we still center line with the boat, or are we going to go out?
29:33Go out.
29:37I don't want anyone directly underneath that thing.
29:40We're going to go out.
29:41Okay.
29:42Okay.
29:43That's maxed out on extension.
29:44That's it?
29:45Brent, don't fight them so hard because I think you're pulling the top.
29:48Okay.
29:49I'm coming up.
29:50All right.
29:51We're going to try to twist it and get it in there.
29:54Okay.
29:55What's at the bottom?
29:56Okay.
29:57Turn it.
29:58Okay.
29:59Push it in.
30:00There.
30:01You guys got a muscle, or do you want me to try to move it?
30:02Rock it that way.
30:03Okay.
30:04Okay.
30:05Yeah, that's doing it.
30:06Yeah, there it is.
30:10Let's get the guidewaters right there.
30:11It's tipping.
30:12Kathy, come help.
30:13Don't let it fall.
30:15What do we got to do?
30:16Let's push it up and get it back in the bracket.
30:19Yeah, there it's in.
30:23Let's get the guy on this way.
30:24It's tipping.
30:25Kathy, come help.
30:26Don't let it fall.
30:29What do we got to do?
30:30Let's push it up and get it back in the bracket.
30:32Let's get to stand up.
30:33Ready?
30:34Good pull.
30:35Okay, let's try to push it back on three.
30:37One, two, three.
30:40Get it in there.
30:42Get it, Scotty.
30:43Nope.
30:44Whoa.
30:45There it is.
30:46Yeah, it's in the bracket.
30:47It's in.
30:48Merry Christmas.
30:50So we've got it in its cradle in the bottom.
30:52Our ropes are holding, but there's an absolute rat's nest of cables and wires.
30:57Okay, look.
30:58This one here, this is all tied up.
31:00So that one there, we call it a yard arm or whatever.
31:04Where's the pins for these?
31:05This is not ideal.
31:06So there's four cables that hold this in place.
31:09But figuring out which four is the issue.
31:13Luckily, Dustin finally cracks the code.
31:16Okay, this one goes over here.
31:18This one goes here.
31:20And these two guys get hooked on somewhere else.
31:23We're attaching these two pieces, these buckles, these cables, so we can stand this all the way up.
31:28Trying to keep it forward aft, correct, and then the yaw east and west.
31:35I got mine in.
31:36Mine's in.
31:37Mine's in.
31:38Mine's in, too.
31:39I'm not cut out to be a pirate.
31:40I like the land.
31:41Dude, we got a mast up, man.
31:42Holy buckets.
31:43It's in.
31:44Just gotta figure out where the other 27 cables go.
31:58While Cappy and the build crew try to become a sailing crew, I get the fun job.
32:13Hunting down cool furniture to turn the deck into the ultimate hangout spot.
32:17I'm currently shopping for some furniture to put on the deck at Joe and Mandy's.
32:30This is huge.
32:31I really like our theme of the ocean and whatnot.
32:34And I want to keep that same vibe, but just a little bit more elevated and not quite lake house-esque.
32:41I'm hoping that maybe something like this will be a little nicer and just will fit better for the project.
32:49I like this one a lot.
32:51It is a little white.
32:54Yeah.
32:57Especially with how much seating this set offers, I can totally see Joe and Mandy with some friends hanging out here after a long day.
33:06I feel like this definitely fits them.
33:09Okay.
33:10I think I'll go ask if they can box this up.
33:19It's been a long day out on the prairie.
33:21We're still scratching our heads over which cables do what.
33:24I imagine this rope started nice and interesting.
33:27And whoever's on this boat, one night just fiddling, just started tying knots and things
33:30because there was nothing else to do in the middle of the ocean.
33:36Last task of the day.
33:39I'm taking a ride to the very top of the mast to hang up the solar-powered string lights that Sprout picked out.
33:47Got it.
33:49Zip-tie it to the rail thingy.
33:54Okay, you can take me down.
33:59The destination is in sight.
34:02And soon enough, Joe and Mandy will set sail in their epic prairie getaway.
34:11It's another beautiful day on the high seas.
34:13And Sprout wanted me out here bright and early to tackle a special project with buckets and scrub brushes.
34:23Hello.
34:25Yo-ho.
34:27It looks great.
34:29You're welcome.
34:30But I love you enough to put those lights up.
34:32It looks so good.
34:33Pretty cool.
34:34What do you got going on?
34:35I am tackling the inside of the boat today.
34:39I see.
34:40I'm going to clear out all the junk in there and figure out what it needs to look nice for Joe and Mandy.
34:44Okay.
34:45Oh, there's stuff in here.
34:46I'll hand you the stuff we don't need.
34:47Oh.
34:48Too many Christmas, dude.
34:49How many?
34:51What is this?
34:52A hemorrhoid cushion?
34:53What is...
34:54I don't need those.
34:55You don't need those?
34:56You should take them.
34:57I don't need them.
34:58What if you need more?
34:59I don't need any more.
35:00I have a full roll.
35:01Okay.
35:03Now let's see what we have to work with down here.
35:17We have some couch cushions.
35:20Ooh.
35:21A complete guide to sales and sale handling.
35:24Does that book say anything about how to set a mask back up?
35:28You read it and tell me what it says.
35:30If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.
35:37Our boat is leaking.
35:39There's no one at our helm.
35:41There's only a book on board and sheer will.
35:44We are struggling.
35:45Send help.
35:46We're from South Dakota.
35:47Help!
35:48We don't know what we're doing.
35:49We're from a landlocked state.
35:51We don't know how this works.
35:53Listen, if this capsizes, I'm just...
35:55I'm going with Davy Jones' locker, dude.
35:57Love you.
35:58It's good to know you.
35:59Hey, Cap.
36:00The starboard side needs scrubbing.
36:02I'm pretty sure port side needs a little bit of touch-up paint on the edging.
36:06Well, you lost me at port, but I'll do that first part.
36:08I don't know what that is.
36:14Oh, deckhand.
36:15Yes, Captain.
36:16How's it going?
36:17Great.
36:18Great.
36:19Make sure to scrub more.
36:21That's aye-aye to you, deckhand.
36:23Inside is looking much better.
36:27All I think I really need is blankets or something to make sure that it's all set for Joe and Mandy.
36:37Looking good.
36:38Looking good.
36:39Deckhand.
36:40Walk the plank, Captain.
36:43Oh, my God.
36:44Oh, my God.
36:45Oh, my God.
36:55Today's the big day.
36:57The good ship Dale is ready to launch.
36:59The sailboat sanctuary is ready to carry Joe and Mandy and all their loved ones into years of adventure on the prairie seas.
37:07I still don't know what half this stuff does.
37:10This looks really good.
37:11Kid, I like your lights.
37:12They were a pain in the butt, but they're cool.
37:14Yeah, that wasn't as easy of an ask as I thought that was.
37:18No, all worth it, dude.
37:19Every day.
37:20Nice.
37:21Awesome.
37:22All right.
37:23I'm going to head down and get Joe and Mandy, and I'll bring them back up.
37:25Okay.
37:26Dude, nice.
37:28Joe and Mandy are waiting back at their house on the far side of the property.
37:32They've never laid eyes on this build, so while Sprout finishes up some of the final touches, I'm going to pick them up.
37:39I'm taking every precaution not to spill the beans.
37:42Blindfold, guys.
37:43Okay.
37:44Blindfold.
37:45So we just have a little bit of a drive into the field here.
37:48You can see it from a little ways off, so I wanted it to be a surprise until we got up there.
37:53I often wonder, like, when we do things like this, is what the neighbors think.
37:56Yeah, the closest neighbor's not that close out here.
37:58This is true.
37:59You do not have a lot of neighbors out here.
38:02Blindfold's on.
38:03No peeking.
38:04Okay, no peeking.
38:05All right.
38:06I'm good.
38:07Okay.
38:08So I'm just having you stand right here.
38:09Okay.
38:10I won't leave your husband stuck in the car.
38:11Grace.
38:12All right, sir.
38:13Perfect.
38:14Right there.
38:15All right.
38:16How are we feeling standing in the middle of your property with blindfolds on?
38:20Yes.
38:21I'm so excited.
38:22So excited.
38:23Butterflies.
38:24So excited.
38:25Yeah, lots of butterflies.
38:26All right.
38:27Well, on the count of three, you can take your blindfolds off.
38:28Okay.
38:29Okay?
38:30One, two, three.
38:31Oh, my gosh.
38:32Oh, my gosh.
38:33Oh, my gosh.
38:34Are you kidding me?
38:35How?
38:36How'd you do that?
38:38No way.
38:39That's amazing.
38:40Wow.
38:41Did you guys do that?
38:42Alex dug a giant hole in the ground.
38:43Yep.
38:44That's how.
38:45That's sitting on a boat trailer.
38:46Wow.
38:47We dropped anchor in the middle of your property.
38:48Speaking of anchors, our anchor is right over there.
38:49Wow.
38:50We're the only ones with a painted anchor.
38:51Crazy.
38:52You guys want to go take a look at the drone?
38:53I so want to take a look.
38:54Yes.
38:55Mandy, go for it.
38:56Okay.
38:57This is insane.
38:58Oh.
38:59You've got to be joking.
39:00This is nuts.
39:03Oh, look at that.
39:04Wow.
39:05Look at that.
39:06Wow.
39:07Look at that.
39:10See, this is amazing.
39:11You've got to be joking.
39:13This is nuts.
39:15You see?
39:16I love it.
39:17Look at that.
39:18Look at that.
39:19Look at that.
39:22Oh, my gosh.
39:25What do you think of that?
39:27Wow.
39:28Are you joking?
39:31Oh, that's so cool.
39:34The name of the boat is Dale.
39:36Amazing man.
39:39Perfect surprise.
39:41Great name for a boat.
39:42I mean, for them to do that was above and beyond.
39:45Yeah.
39:46Love it.
39:47You guys had talked a lot about the adventure.
39:51You guys had had the houseboat, but thinking about the safety piece of it, right?
39:55Open water, open ocean.
39:56There's a lot to go with that.
39:57We are from a landlocked state.
39:59We understand how, like, the ocean isn't exactly feeling very safe when you don't know what's underneath.
40:05Like, I love the concept of the water, right?
40:07You're just out in this beautiful open area and so peaceful, which is here as well.
40:14And then we wanted to make it look like it was parked at a marina.
40:18Absolutely.
40:19And then give you a big enough deck that you could hang out with friends and have drinks, do some cooking if you wanted to.
40:24Everything in the boat is completely intact.
40:26The cabin is completely functioning on the inside.
40:30Well, Cappy, can we board?
40:31Absolutely.
40:33Absolutely, Captain.
40:34Go for it.
40:39This is so cool.
40:43And your favorite stuff.
40:46Yay!
40:46Games!
40:48This is exactly what we do.
40:50Yes.
40:51Hang out on the water, play games.
40:53Mm-hmm.
40:54Chill.
40:55How fun.
40:56Wow.
40:56What's in there?
41:00I don't know.
41:01That's the bedroom.
41:02Wow.
41:03And these benches can burn to beds.
41:05This is amazing.
41:06You can comfortably sleep up to six.
41:08So fun.
41:09But with a big deck, you can have more people than that.
41:11Yeah.
41:12Can I peek?
