00:00Episode 1: Magical Star Magical Emi
00:13Hello. Thank you for watching today.
00:17Today's topic is Magical Star Magical Emi.
00:21Episode 1: Magical Star Magical Emi
00:51Produced by On Piero, the series aired for a total of 38 episodes between 1985 and 1986.
01:01The story begins with the scene where Magicarat, a magic theater troupe run by the grandparents of the main characters Kazuki and Mai, moves to Kotemarida.
01:11While Mai is helping someone move, a luxury item that is invisible to the people around suddenly appears, and only Mai is aware of its existence.
01:21Immediately after that, Yuya begins talking to Mai, so Mai follows him and witnesses him enter the mirror her grandfather was carrying, which he uses for magic.
01:33When Mai receives the mirror from her grandfather and enters the empty room, the fairy Topo from the land of mirrors, who is the source of the voice, appears and gives Mai the bracelet.
01:46However, the high-end Topo was so dazzling that it possessed a nearby stuffed flying squirrel.
01:55Topo then tells Mai that if she casts a spell on the bracelet, her dreams will come true, but Mai, who has been left behind by Magicarat, heads to the venue where Magicarat is performing without listening to Topo.
02:09After somehow reuniting at the performance location, while Mai works as an assistant in the magic show, Topo, who has been accompanying her, accidentally causes a big commotion, and the performance cannot continue.
02:24Seeing this, Mai felt responsible and tried to calm the situation by casting a spell on the bracelet, which then activated the magic.
02:33After transforming into the female magician Emi, Mai appears on stage in front of the confused Magicarat members.
02:43Immediately afterwards, he performed a series of magic tricks that the audience had never seen before, and while they were amazed, they were also captivated by his brilliant performance.
02:53And when the magic trick was over, Magicarat received a huge round of applause, but Emi was nowhere to be seen, and the other members were also taken away, leaving them stunned for a while.
03:06Koganei, a television producer who happened to be in the audience, praised the magic and became convinced of Emi's star quality.
03:15After this, Mai was unexpectedly scouted by Koganei as Emi, and not only did she become a member of Magicarat, but she also made her debut in the entertainment industry, captivating fans across the country as both a magician and an idol.
03:33Now, let me introduce the main characters.
03:37Kazuki Mai is the main character of this work, a girl who attends the elementary school division of Kotemari Academy and dreams of becoming a magician.
03:48She has a bright and lively personality that everyone likes, and she aspires to become the famous magician Emily Howell, but due to her natural clumsiness, her magic skills seem immature.
03:59By chance, she meets a mirror fairy named Topo, who bestows upon her magic upon her, allowing her to transform into her ideal self, Magical Emi, and become very active.
04:10Furthermore, although she initially rebels against her cousin, a high school student named Yukisho, who moves into her grandparents' house, she begins to develop a faint crush on him.
04:19Topo is a fairy from the Mirror World, and when he meets Mai, he gives her a bracelet called the Heart Breath, which allows her to transform into Magical Emi.
04:32Originally, she exists in a luxurious form, but because it is too dazzling, she possesses a stuffed flying squirrel and travels around with Mai.
04:42In the play, her activities as a fairy are deemed inappropriate and she is about to be separated from Mai, but she escapes this danger thanks to Mai's earnest wish.
04:54Yukisho is a high school student attending Kotemari Academy's high school division and is Mai's cousin.
05:00Her parents are magicians, and they moved to America, so she lives with her grandparents, the Nakamori family. Mai is treated like a younger sister, which sometimes causes Mai to rebel.
05:15Having been forced to take up magic by his parents, he has become negative towards it, but at school he is passionate about boxing.
05:25Junichi Waki is Mai's father and runs the cookie shop Congirl.
05:34He married Yoko, who was the star of Magicarat, but because she was indifferent to magic and had no understanding or interest in it, he seems to have forbidden Yoko from participating in Magicarat.
05:46Junichi Waki is Mai's mother and a former member of Magicarat, but one of the conditions for their marriage was that she completely retire from magic.
06:00Although she still has regrets, after getting married she runs the cookie shop with her husband.
06:06However, it seems he would like to make a comeback as a magician if the opportunity arises.
06:11Waki Misaki is Mai's younger brother who is still a toddler, and is often seen with her, often portrayed using Topo, a stuffed flying squirrel, as a toy.
06:27Yosuke and Haruko Nakamori are Mai's maternal grandparents and run the magical theater troupe Magicarat.
06:35However, in terms of practical matters, Haruko is in charge of Magicalat as the Binwan producer.
06:42Yosuke was devoted to his hobby of collecting antiques.
06:50Akira Matsuo is a member of Magicarat, but he travels to Tokyo to train in magic under Show's parents.
06:59Shiozawa Susumu decides to start a magic school with Yosuke and the others.
07:05Guests include Yukiko Hirota, who travels with Matsuo to hone her magic skills in this one spot.
07:14Shigeru Koganei is a producer at Japan Television, and in the Magical Rat performance,
07:20After a chance encounter with Magical Emi, he uses his forceful skills to help Emi debut as a magician and idol.
07:29In fact, my son Musashi was a former classmate of theirs, and it seems he had asked me to come to the Magicalat performance.
07:38Kokubunji Madoka is Koganei's subordinate who works at Japan Television, and is a poor subordinate who is manipulated by Koganei's whims and forceful skills.
07:51For some reason, he dislikes Karin Island, Koganei's favorite food, but he has a crush on Yukiko from Magical Rat.
07:59Emily Howell was a legendary genius magician who was active in the 1920s and 1930s. Mai idolized her and even had a poster of her in her room.
08:14During the play, Mai learns that she is not a genius but rather a hard worker, and decides that she should grow through her own strength or hard work, which leads her to decide to convert her magical powers into Topo.
08:30As an aside, the voice actor for the lead role and the theme song for this film are the same as those for Magical Angel Creamy Mami, the voice actress for this film is Yoko Obata, a new singer who made her debut as an idol singer.
08:48As for the story content, it takes the concept established in Creamy Mami, of depicting the heart of a heroine torn between her real appearance and the colossal figure created by magic, to the extreme. Despite being a magical girl anime, it is characterized by a direction that focuses on depictions of everyday life and does not bring the magical girl element to the forefront as much as possible.
09:15After the series ended, in 1986, an original animation video (OVA) was released, Magical Star: Magical Emi: Semi Shigure, which was made up of digest footage from the TV series and original footage, and a short film, Magical Star: Magical Emi: Kumo Hikaru, which was produced as a bonus feature for the first volume of the DVD box set released in 2002.
09:42Furthermore, overseas, the series was broadcast in Hong Kong with the original song used alongside the Kanto dialect dubbing, and became a hit there.
09:53In addition, as hidden characters by the production side, in episode 29, Tobikage, the main robot of the ninja warrior Tobikage, and Banks, the combat robot of The Boom Army, appear.
10:07In episode 32, Hanazono Yumi and Misawa Kyohei, the magical idol Pastel Yumi, who is a creation of her own, appear.
10:18Now, it's finally the final episode.
10:22The final episode will be the bottom part from the previous episode.
10:25Emi finally wins the coveted Emily Award, but at the grand celebration party, she appears to be lost in thought and with a gloomy expression.
10:39In the midst of all this, her grandfather Yosuke suddenly announces on stage that Magicarat is disbanding, surprising everyone, including Emi and the other Magicarat members.
10:54The next day, the Magicarat members begin to think about their future plans, and consider training in magic in America, where Shaw's parents live.
11:04Meanwhile, Mae hears from TV producer Koganei about plans to hold a large-scale performance to celebrate winning the Emily Award, but after Magicarat disbands, Emi herself also comes up with the idea of performing a show on her own.
11:20One day, Koganei's subordinate, Kokubunji, brings him a documentary film of Emily Hayal, and when Koganei watches it, he sees Emily, who is known as a genius magician, failing to perform magic tricks many times as a clumsy child, and then her brilliant stage performances as an adult.
11:42After watching this documentary, Mai realizes that her clumsiness is not an obstacle to magic, and that if she works hard, she will be rewarded like Emily, so she asks her grandfather to teach her more magic.
11:57Later, as she practices magic, Mai begins to think that she should perform magic using her own powers, rather than relying on Emi's magical powers. As a result, she decides to transform her magical powers into topos at the Emily Awards commemorative performance.
12:17Meanwhile, his grandfather, who used to teach magic, talks about opening a magic school to teach children the joy of magic. Susumu, who had been hesitant about going to America, agrees and tells him that he wants to work with him.
12:33A few days later, on the day of the commemorative performance, after Emi quietly said goodbye to Shou and Koganei, the performance finally began in front of a packed venue, and Emi and Magicarat performed a magnificent magic show on stage, drawing thunderous cheers from the audience.
12:53The fun time passes quickly, and as the performance draws to a close, Topo escapes from the flying squirrel stuffed animal he has been possessing and flies away as a luxurious being.
13:08At that moment, the curtain quietly came down to a huge round of applause, bringing the performance to a successful end, while Mai was overwhelmed with emotion at her final performance as Emi and the end of her existence.
13:25The scene changes to a snowy night after the performance, where Koganei is sitting on a bench in front of the venue, his head bowed, having intuitively realized that Emi's farewell, which he had been told about before the performance, was forever.
13:43Meanwhile, after the performance ended and the lights went out in the venue, a stuffed flying squirrel was lying there, left behind by Topo, who had left without saying goodbye.
13:55Gazing at the stuffed animal, Mai begins to show off the still-shaky magic tricks she has been practicing.
14:04Then, Sho, who was looking for Mai, saw her and quietly approached her to encourage her. The show ended with the two of them leaving the venue and hurrying home with smiles on their faces.
14:17Now, let's take a look at Emi's performance.
