00:00Episode 1: Astro Boy
00:09Hello. Thank you for watching today.
00:18Today's topic is Astro Boy.
00:21This film, Astro Boy, is about a super robot developed after a tragic accident, who, despite being mistreated by humans, comes to understand humans and strives to create a society where they can coexist with robots.
00:37Now, let's take a look at this work.
00:41Astro Boy was originally created by Osamu Tezuka and aired for a total of 193 episodes between 1963 and 1966.
00:55The story begins with a young boy named Tenma Tobio driving a car at high speed and causing an accident.
01:02An ambulance arrived immediately but was too late, and the young Tobio died. His father, Dr. Tenma, carried him away.
01:12However, unable to accept his son's death, Dr. Tenma uses his position as Director General of the Ministry of Science to create a robot that looks just like Tobio and begins living with him.
01:25At first, Dr. Tenma loves the robot like a son, but he becomes frustrated with the robot, which never seems to grow, and in the end, in a fit of anger, he sells it to a robot circus.
01:40Without knowing why he was sold, he is named Astro Boy at the Robot Circus and forced to fight golems in front of the audience as a member of the circus.
01:52Once the battle begins, Atom overwhelms the Golem due to the vast difference in performance.
02:01Then, a spectator watching the scene, or perhaps the newly appointed Director General of the Ministry of Science, Dr. Ochanomizu, urges the circus leader to stop the fighting, but he firmly refuses, citing laws regarding robots.
02:16Therefore, when Dr. Ochanomizu is forced to give up, the battle continues and Atom defeats the golem, but the circus leader orders that it be destroyed until the very end.
02:30However, because he was unable to destroy his fellow robots, his energy supply was cut off as punishment.
02:40Later, a dejected Atom comes to the circus' scrapyard and finds a discarded robot lying there. Feeling sorry for the robot, Atom gives it some of his dwindling energy.
02:54The next day, as the circus performance continues as usual, an accident causes a fire, burning the circus tent and forcing the entire audience to evacuate.
03:07Seeing this, the robots rescue the humans who were unable to escape, and Atom also saves the injured circus leader who is unable to move.
03:17A few days later, Dr. Ochanomizu visits the leader, who is hospitalized, and begs him to release Atom, who saved his life, but he refuses, completely refusing to listen.
03:32Dr. Ochanomizu then shows the TV news that the Declaration of Human Rights for Robots has been passed, and tells them that they can no longer restrain Atom.
03:43After this, Atom is taken in by Dr. Ochanomizu and goes on to become a robot that loves and protects peace.
03:54Now, let me introduce the main characters.
03:59Atom is a robot created by Dr. Tenma in the likeness of his late son, and was originally named Tobio after his son.
04:07However, for some unreasonable reason, Dr. Tenma sells him to a robot circus, but after being released under the Robot Human Rights Act, he is taken in by Dr. Ochanomizu of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
04:22While attending school, he will solve problems in Japan and the world, while also experiencing the struggles and conflicts associated with human society and himself as a robot.
04:37Atom's specs and abilities are as follows: he is 135 cm tall, weighs 35 kg, and possesses seven powerful powers, including an electronic brain, a searchlight, an artificial body, 1000 times the strength, a nuclear motor, a jet engine with a maximum speed of Mach 5, and an antenna, as well as a machine gun on his rear that can fire 500 rounds per second.
05:04Uran is a robot given to Atom as a birthday present. She was created as Atom's younger sister and, like her older brother, boasts the incredible strength of 100,000 horsepower.
05:18She is an active girl who cares about her brother, and there are many scenes where she causes trouble for Atom, but she is also often taken hostage by Atom's enemies during the story.
05:30Cobalt is a robot created as a prototype when Atom was being made, and he becomes Atom's older brother.
05:39However, after the prototype was made, it was stored in a warehouse at the Ministry of Science and discarded during a major cleaning. However, after being fortunately revived, he met Atom, who had been searching for him, and from then on they began living together as a family.
05:55Its unique feature is that, because it was a prototype, it was not as successful as Atom and does not appear to be able to carry out highly precise activities or tasks.
06:05Chitan is the youngest baby robot, but in episode 178, Uran takes him out and tries to forcefully modify him so that he can speak, but he ends up gaining the ability to destroy his surroundings with the vibrations of his cries.
06:23After Dr. Ochanomizu accepts Atom's request to become parents, Ethanol and Rin become Atom's conscience robots, manufactured at a private robot factory.
06:37After that, while living with Atom, because he was created after Atom, he ended up studying as Atom's junior when he transferred to elementary school.
06:48Dr. Ochanomizu is the Director General of the Ministry of Science, succeeding Dr. Tenma, and is also a good sympathizer of robots, including Atom.
07:00Since taking Atom in, he has treated him like his own child, sending him to school to learn about humans, while also creating the family Atom had always wanted.
07:12Dr. Tenma is a world-renowned scientist who created Atom out of love for his son who had committed suicide, but his mental breakdown gradually became more and more apparent, and in the end he wanted the robot to grow physically.
07:29After selling Atom to the circus, he regrets his actions, and after stepping down as Minister of Science, he seems to be watching over Atom at Inton Company.
07:38Higeoyaji, whose real name is Burn Shunsaku, is a former private detective who is also a teacher at the elementary school that Atom attends.
07:49He has an Edokko personality, and while he answers Atom's questions as he studies humans, he also uses his experience as a former detective to solve cases together with Atom and the others.
08:00Oome Tamao, nicknamed Tama-chan, is Atom's classmate and is characterized by his large glasses and hat due to his terrible golden eyes.
08:12Because he was timid and hasty, he was often the target of Shibugaki's bullying.
08:19Shibugaki is Atom's classmate, but because his parents are very wealthy, he has a bad attitude at school and often teases and is mean to people he doesn't like.
08:33On the other hand, he is often seen working together with Tamao, who he always makes fun of, and together with Atom they form an odd duo.
08:42Chief Tawashi is the head of the First Investigative Division of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, but he also has a strict attitude towards robots, and whenever an incident occurs, he casts a suspicious eye on robots.
08:56During the film, he sometimes comes into conflict with Dr. Ochanomizu by revealing his distrust of Atom.
09:03Inspector Nakamura often works together with Inspector Tawashi, but unlike Inspector Tawashi, he has a warm-hearted personality and is friendly towards Atom and the robots.
09:18He often acted as an intermediary between Inspector Tawashi and Atom, or Dr. Ochanomizu.
09:24Skunk is a gangster who commits various crimes, including theft, kidnapping, and murder, and he makes a strong impression on Atom with his abstruse assertion that a perfect robot, like a human, would have an evil heart.
09:43Majin is a robot discovered in a meteorite that fell to Earth, and it is later revealed that this robot is a planet-modifying robot that was accidentally transported there.
09:57After falling, the demon is activated by lightning and automatically begins modifying the Earth, making it uninhabitable for living things, which leads to a battle with Atom, but ultimately he is sent flying into space by changing the Earth's gravity.
10:16Atlas is a robot created for the purpose of retaliation by Dr. Lamb, an Indian who suffered from racial discrimination. He is equipped with the Omega Factor, a circuit that allows him to harm others at his own discretion. This allows him to attack humans and robots without hesitation, and to commit evil deeds, through the lightning-like beams that emanate from his head.
10:42However, it ignored Dr. Ram's orders and began to go out of control, eventually fighting Atom and being destroyed.
10:52Pluto was created by the former royal Sultan as the world's strongest robot, and to prove his strength, he competed against famous robots from around the world, winning.
11:05Furthermore, he wishes to fight Atom and does so, but when a nearby mountain begins to erupt, he works with Atom to stop the eruption, and before long his desire to fight fades away, and he begins to feel friendship rather than hostility towards Atom. However, he fights against Bolar, created by Dr. Goji, and is defeated and destroyed.
11:29Aoxy was originally the eldest of three robot brothers, Bluebon, but when two of the other robot brothers, Tott and Maria, were destroyed, Dr. Ross took over the abilities and personalities of his destroyed brothers.
11:49After that, Aoki begins to live a triple life, going to school as Atom's classmate, Tot, while at home she lives as Maria.
11:59However, while living such a complex and bizarre life, he proposes the founding of a country for robots only, Robotania, in order to counter the humans who treat robots tyrannically. However, he ultimately meets a tragic end when he is speared by the Count who destroyed Maria.
12:17As an aside, after this film ended, the Sankei Shimbun published a sequel to the story, Atom Congestion Story, which depicts the return of Atom, who had gone missing after crashing into the sun.
12:36In addition, the end of Atom, a sequel story depicting Atom's reawakening after completing his mission and sleeping in a museum, was also announced.
12:47In addition, before this work, the adventure comic puppet show Astro Boy or the paper puppet show Astro Boy was released in 1957,
13:00A live-action version of Astro Boy aired in four parts from 1959 to 1960, totaling 65 episodes, and in 2009 a DVD containing the original 58 episodes was released.
13:17In addition, anime works that have aired since this one include Astro Boy in 1980, Astro Boy in 2003, Atom the Beginning in 2017, and Go Go Atom in 2019.
13:37Meanwhile, Astro Boy has also gained popularity overseas, with the title "Astro Boy" and being broadcast in the US, Europe, the US, and China, where it recorded high viewership ratings.
13:51In 2014, with the African market in mind, it was aired in Nigeria under the title Robot Atom Little Astro Boy.
14:00Many theatrical versions have also been produced, starting with Astro Boy and Space Hero in 1964, and nearly 20 have been released to date. In 2010, the musical Atom was also performed.
14:18Additionally, he has made numerous guest appearances in Tezuka's works and other anime, such as facing off against Star Huma in Star of the Giants vs. Astro Boy, and appearing as passenger Adam on the Underwater Town Limited Express Marine Express.
14:36Furthermore, for six years from 2003, a remake of the original Pluto by Naoki Urasawa was published, and in 2023, a web anime adaptation was distributed on Netflix.
14:55Now, it's finally the final episode.
14:58One night, the mice living in the attic of Higeoyaji's house suddenly disappear, and while he is suspicious, he witnesses animals not only from Japan but from all over the world heading towards the North Pole or the South Pole all at once.
15:16Regarding this strange animal behavior, Dr. Ochanomizu explained that it may be that the animal's instinct is to flee to places with lower temperatures.
15:30Furthermore, the doctor talks about signs that the Earth's temperature is rising, and his bad prediction comes true, with temperatures rising so high that they burn vegetation.
15:41After analyzing the situation, Dr. Ochanomizu explains that sunspots are the cause of the high temperatures, and that in a month the temperature will rise by more than 50 degrees Celsius compared to now, and that the Earth could also explode.
15:57A few days later, as current science is unable to solve the problem, humanity chooses to escape Earth in a rocket, and after humanity's escape, an international conference passes a resolution to entrust the Earth to robots.
16:14After the resolution is adopted, as many rockets are launched into space, the representative of the remaining robots, the Robot President, declares that he will rule the Earth until humanity returns.
16:28However, Napoletane, the only person left on Earth, attacks the robot president and then attacks the robots in an attempt to rule an Earth made up of only robots.
16:43Later, Atom is called by the dying robot president, who asks him to protect the Earth from Napoletane with the president's official approval.
16:53When Napoletane finds out about this, he threatens Atom's parents and declares war on them. Meanwhile, Atom uses his past experience and knowledge to solve problems such as rising temperatures and volcanic eruptions all over the Earth.
17:13Meanwhile, Napoletan's men kidnap Uran and Cobalt, and Napoletan forces Atom not to get in his way.
17:24Still, Atom doesn't give in to the threats and defeats the robots sent by Napoletan, but then his parents are almost kidnapped, so he immediately goes after them.
17:36However, it is a trap set by Napoletan, and once Atom is caught in the spider web, Napoletan appears.
17:47He then threatens to drop Atom's captured family into a pool of sulfuric acid, dissolving them, in order to force Atom to surrender and give up on the Earth.
18:00Atom, who had been listening to the conversation, seizes a momentary gap and fires the machine gun on his rear, then instantly escapes from the spider web and begins his counterattack.
18:12Atom then defeats enemies one after another, but just as Napoletan dodges Atom's attacks, he uses his ignorance to take away Atom's freedom and launches a lightning attack.
18:27However, when Atom returns the shock, Napoletan is thrown into the wall by the shock, and part of his head is destroyed, leaving it exposed.
18:37It was then discovered that the exposed parts were not a human brain but were all mechanical, and Napoletan, who had previously believed that he still had a brain in his head, was forced to admit that he was not human.
18:53Although Napoletan is confused, he quickly returns to his bad side and repents for the sins he committed due to his misunderstanding. After handing over to Atom the substance that will suppress the nuclear explosion of the sun, he commits suicide by falling into a pool of cerebral sulfuric acid.
19:10Atom cannot hide his surprise at his successor, but as there is no time left, he immediately heads towards the sun with a rocket loaded with matter and launches it.
19:23Unfortunately, the rocket hits a meteorite, causing it to roar, so Atom himself decides to drop the rocket into the sun.
19:37Atom then looks at the Earth, says goodbye to his family, and approaches the sun with the rocket, disappearing into thin air.
19:45The scene changes and, while the Earth and humanity are saved thanks to Atom, Atom is not there, and the program ends with a scene showing Dr. Ochanomizu and his family, sad but still believing that Atom will survive.
