00:00Trump bailout ripped as Band-Aid on an open wound.
00:04While the Trump administration's $12 billion farm bailout offers short-term relief, American
00:10Soybean Association President Caleb Ragland warns it won't solve the long-term challenges
00:14facing farmers.
00:16Ragland appeared on CNN with anchor John Berman, pushing for changes to the president's
00:21trade policies.
00:23This is a Band-Aid on an open wound.
00:25And again, we're thankful that there's something that will help keep some farms in business.
00:30But what we truly need are market-based solutions.
00:33Those are sustainable long-term, he said.
00:35Ragland added that despite his support for Donald Trump, the administration's tariffs
00:40and economic measures have raised costs for farmers.
00:43In response to new tariff hikes, the president announced a one-time $12 billion payment to
00:48U.S. farmers, mainly soybean and corn producers.
00:52An NBC analysis found that China has resumed purchasing U.S. soybeans, but not at the
00:57levels outlined in Trump's trade agreement.
01:00The country had previously stopped buying, despite being the largest customer due to trade
01:04disputes with the president.
01:06Ragland claimed that government policies have cut demand, putting farmers at a disadvantage.
01:11That's what American soybean farmers want — opportunities to make a living, to make
01:15a profit from the market, not being dependent on the next program to keep us from bleeding
01:19to death, he added, but the situation's serious.
01:23I've been farming 21 years now, full-time, and this is by far the most serious economic
01:28situation that I've experienced and my family's experienced.
01:32And I think that's the same for many farmers across this country.
01:35We simply need a level playing field, both for our cost of production and making sure that
01:40we don't have obstacles that are causing our exports to be hindered because we're great
01:44producers, Ragland said.
