01:37Today, we are starting demo at Debbie Neiman's house.
01:41We have had extensive conversations with Debbie.
01:43So far, she and her family have just used this as a lake house for visits,
01:46but she wants to make this her permanent residence.
01:49We wanted to get started right away.
01:50It's very dated and kind of dark and closed in, even though you have this incredible view of the lake.
02:01So we're demoing the spaces that we know need to be removed.
02:06This house has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, with a living room and kitchen separated by a big fireplace.
02:12There's also a dining room and a connecting porch.
02:14We've already been given the go-ahead to demo all these walls out, to open up the space, and make way for a whole new floor plan.
02:22This is a project she has dreamt about and planned for for a long time.
02:25She and her husband had bought this house a couple years ago.
02:28They were going to renovate before moving in, and were just five weeks from starting the renovation together,
02:33and her husband unexpectedly passed away about a year ago.
02:37So the project was on hold for a while.
02:38But she feels like this is the time to really go forward with her and her husband's dreams.
02:45This will become the new kitchen.

02:55The kitchen is relocated so that it maximizes the lake view.

04:33We wanted the house on the lake and our realtors called us to come and see the house.
04:37We walked in, called Gates and Robbie, and found out that they had a house in the lake.
04:42But it wasn't that big of a big deal to see the house.
04:44We had a lot of great conversations with his dad out here.

04:49And I wouldn't have had that time if my parents didn't decide to buy this place two years ago.
04:51in bentonville we wanted a house on the lake and our realtors called us to come and see the house
04:58we walked in called gates and robbie and found out they were pregnant with their first child
05:04so i looked at greg and said we're buying this but the house hasn't been touched since the 70s
05:11so it's run down i really don't like the way it looks
05:16greg and i wanted to renovate and make it our forever home together
05:21i just thought i had longer than i did but he passed away last july so everything came to a halt
05:29but robbie and gates they're everything to me and i adore my grandchild katie's a blast
05:36and soon to be two grandbabies so i decided to go ahead and renovate i just want everyone in
05:42the family to use it and enjoy time together but not having greg here it's still pretty hard
05:51but i'm really excited because this was our dream i know we've had some conversations
05:58but let's talk through what you guys are imagining for this room carpet gone carpet gone yes you want
06:04wood flooring i would love it throughout the house perfect perfect i know you want an electric fireplace
06:09right i thought it would be safer with children oh and it's nice it's just easy flip a switch right
06:15turn it on turn it off yeah that's what i want so this will basically be living in a hangout room
06:21right and then you were concerned about this greg and i we wanted to close in the porch
06:26because we felt it was a hazard for all the kids yeah it's about a 30-foot drop so i was thinking make
06:32it dining dining yes which will be really cool because i know you like to bring everyone here
06:37for thanksgiving dinner huge table how many people i think well last year we had 15. okay and now we're
06:43about to have 16. oh it's so exciting so reworking the living room we're going to have new flooring
06:50hand lighting electric fireplace you have your dining room we'll obviously have new glass that's safe and
06:55then you also have the big table that'll be perfect we already cut this hole here for your door for your
07:01bedroom you will no longer have to walk through a closet to get to your bed we're going to close
07:07the old doors now you have a big walk-in closet nice yes okay let's talk about your bathroom so
07:14what would you like to see i still want two sinks okay and a tub shower tub and shower any colors that
07:22you love for your room i like oh blues greens beige so the bedroom we're going to close this old slider
07:30up change out the flooring change out the lighting all new windows paint we'll re
07:36work your entire bathroom replace everything you'll have a shower a tub two sinks and just a nice
07:42beautiful updated space that's wonderful let's go talk kitchen that's very important there was some
07:47debate on where to put the kitchen but it really makes sense to have it here with the view we're going
07:51obviously maximize this with windows yes this wall will scooch back so you can have a nice walk-in
07:57pantry as you know we estimated 300 000 for this whole renovation but what do you envision for
08:02your dream kitchen i like lower cabinets with windows oh i love that especially here i know an
08:11island i'm assuming oh yeah yeah big island do you have stained painted do you have a preference not
08:17really i so trust y'all's creativity i can't imagine not relying on you all oh well we're honored to do
08:25this so thank you okay so the kitchen will be all new windows we're going to replace the flooring
08:30consistent flooring throughout the house all new cabinets countertops appliances island and obviously
08:36big walk-in pantry if we could also add like a little sign above the kitchen that says dd's camp
08:42for the grandkids i love that like you to camp with the kids yes or i will they're a little young
08:47yet but i did get a bracelet i love that i love that so we need a place since you're going to have
08:52all the kids you need lots of snacks too so we're going to make sure there's snack storage
08:55okay so here we have pantry which is going to be snacks storage small appliances lots of extra stuff
09:02here and i know we talked about giving you a nice laundry room but you still have this space here
09:07right in your dream world having a little bit of extra space how do you see that being used
09:12it could be a game room we do entertain okay a lot so i would love to have like a bar yeah okay
09:18we gotta talk about outside yeah we haven't talked outside let's go do that oh also this door what um
09:23yeah what are your thoughts on the door it's a little dated no on the other side the hardware
09:27doesn't really work but you would write just a new door yes all right this is an interesting house
09:33it's like it's very unassuming from out here you have no idea what's back there yeah i particularly
09:41don't like the outside i would like it to be taller and i don't mind brick but i definitely don't like
09:47the color i know i was actually wondering if maybe we could do some sort of dormers or something
09:51because it is such a flat room yeah what about stone what do you think oh i love stone okay
09:59well then yeah that's kind of what i was i was thinking is to make it kind of like a stone
10:04looking cottage i think it could work so instead of the brick we'll add stone to the exterior update
10:09these windows update these shutters we'll change out the lighting change out the front door add some
10:15dormers so it looks like a more of a modern cottage that's greatness i love about this place
10:21like you came here and dreamed together to you know make this amazing space for your family yeah
10:25my dad was going to be boots on the ground really managing the renovation himself and i know that my
10:31dad is thrilled that we're working with you guys to finish the job we'll try to do right by him yes
10:35i know yeah well i know thank you for trusting us yeah i can promise you we will not be done by the time
10:41your baby is born but we will hurry we are on a time crunch because at the moment debbie's going
10:46back and forth from here to texas and she just wants to be here next to the grand babies so we
10:50want to get her in as quickly as we possibly can there's just a lot to do we are touching every single
10:57aspect of this house anything we've got to do on the exterior all these new windows siding with trim
11:04is going to be a big challenge thanks guys bye guys also have to be very mindful of greg's legacy
11:12because they had this dream and they were going to do this together so we really have to figure out
11:17different ways to honor that yeah
11:37so this is where i think we do floor to ceiling we just do lots of storage built-in yeah drawers maybe
11:44on the bottom where you can put stuff okay we are at debbie neiman's house today um we have got all
11:50the demo done and now we're framing all of the walls back in you know uh debbie talked about camp dd and
11:56we talked about snacks of course grandma needs to have snacks what if this is weird but what if we got
12:02a vending machine oh i love that isn't that cool how much would our kids love that's what i'm saying
12:07i'm gonna start looking okay well i do want to talk about the front door though i mean first of all this
12:12one's super super dated i just think the outside of this house needs to be more cheery debbie is like
12:17cheery and happy and amazing and i feel like the outside of the house is not and it needs to feel
12:22like sunshine dutch door would be super cute on this like stone cottage and then when the kids are
12:28over and it's out she has the top of the door open but the kids are trapped and safe not traps that
12:33didn't sound that's not the right word you want to leave it same location but then what this is
12:38just put glass in there i know but it's it's put clear glass look how ugly it is dave come look out
12:43here that's ugly okay so a centered up four foot dutch door right doesn't that feel like sunshine to
12:49anyone else yeah thank you okay one more thing i was thinking for this dining room okay it looks
12:55super sketch i don't want to go on it so remember when gates was talking about this room this is where
13:00him and his dad like had lots of really good conversations so i think we need to get a giant table
13:05number one okay but you know how you like to work with stained glass back in your college days
13:11it was an elective class what if you make a piece of stained glass that we hang in the new windows
13:16it's not part of the windows because i don't want to like that's too complicated but we can just hang
13:21it and then when the sun shines on it the colors will come through onto the dining table so it's like
13:26in honor of their dad and memory of their dad and the light shines down on the table so he's still here
13:31because this was the space where they have such great memories with him and i don't think you need
13:35to do anything like elaborate i think it should just be lots of pretty colors that sort of mimic
13:40the lake like really soft lake sky yeah okay stained glass baby some of the classes that you take in
13:47college you never think you're going to use but that is one that we have put to good use all right break
13:53good job today chris and i are cutting eyebrow arches to go over the bar and the pantry door there we go
14:10howdy howdy hey got a lot of framing the arch looks really good so what else on this doorway here
14:17into the pantry what chris and i had talked about was you know running a three-foot opening and then
14:24just doing the archway in the trim so then you'd have just the standard square doors yeah the good
14:29news is i have the vending machine ordered here's it's going to match the color of the cabinetry in
14:37the pantry how big is it four foot one and a half four foot one and a half wide yeah it's not gonna fit
14:42it's not gonna fit what do you mean it's not gonna fit not with an arch doorway who knew that
14:47a vending machine was four feet wide and seven feet tall and 30 inches deep it needs to fit all
14:51the snacks here's a thought do we just do a cased opening and not have a door on the pantry if it's
14:57all closed cabinetry it's actually really beautiful no so i have one more question okay yes is it really
15:03weird now that we have square cased opening square cased opening and one random eyebrow no that's like a
15:09a unique spot no i don't think so it's all i needed
15:21the neiman house we moved the kitchen so now we have this extra space and they love to play games
15:27as a family so we are making a game table for this room we're using walnut it's really beautiful
15:33guys are cutting the top and this space in the game room is going to feel very different than the rest of
15:38the house which is what i wanted so while you're doing this i'm gonna go look through a pile of
15:41tile because i need some tile for the little bar area okay next to the game room at the neiman house
15:47we have a little bar and i know we had some leftover green tile back here and i i have to find it because
15:56i really think it'd be pretty oh yes this is it i need 35 square feet
16:01and i knew i had this somewhere this is actually leftover from sylvie's bathroom and i think it'll
16:09be really pretty in that arched bar right next to the game room with that dark walnut table i think
16:16that'll be really pretty so okay good i'm just gonna leave it here but i'll bring it to the house
16:19tomorrow there we go time is of the essence at debbie's house because her new grand baby is due
16:31any day now we're adding the dormer the back wall is being prepped for new windows and at derek shop
16:37dave derek and his brother damon are going to start building the front door it's gonna be a nice door

18:23think on this oh my gosh look at this look at this this is what i wanted

21:10tile that we are going to put as the top of the table dave will build here's your edge and we're
21:18trying to decide we have this tile here okay which again i've got to go get one inch steel this is
21:24i remember this is like on the dock alfresco dining by the lake it's very soft i think this is it i think
21:32it's so pretty we have the tabletop decided we have some beautiful mosaic tile dave's going to build
21:37the actual top where we'll lay the tile in and then for the legs we'll repurpose some steel that he can
21:43then weld into the legs it also needs to look old that's what i love about that tile so it looks like
21:49an antique piece of furniture that will be really beautiful for this alfresco dining
22:00work is continuing at debbie neiman's house the guys are installing the trim
22:08and we're seeing good progress in debbie's main closet and bathroom suite
22:19we're going to make a piece of stained glass art
22:30okay so we're wanting to make a piece of stained glass art
22:44dave is also a stained glass artiste beth i took some classes in college awesome just a few short
22:50years ago and so we wanted to make a piece for a homeowner that we're working with on a renovation
22:54her and her husband had been looking for a house out on the lake for many years they finally found one
22:59and he actually unexpectedly passed away and she is now continuing with their plans to renovate this
23:05home and make it what they wanted it to be together okay so this i want it to be very natural it's kind
23:11of like the lake and a sunset and a sky so do you want to pick some colors then sure let's glasses over
23:18here supplies dave has fixed pieces of stained glass before that we found in old homes so a historic glass
23:25but i don't know that he's ever actually made a piece he says he has in college but that was a very
23:31long time ago but we'll pick out some glass here and work on it later at the barn hey jen what about
23:35something like this for the mountains kind of has that ozark mountain look oh that's a little
23:41a little bit too too much it feels like a little bit like a peacock no offense to the glass
23:47that's bright yeah too bright yeah that's a little too veiny a little too much movement there's just
23:53you know this kind of thing where are you leaning color why like i know you said too bright
23:59very difficult we don't want to be oh that's too wavy i feel like the biggest issue to getting
24:05this done is going to be standing right behind you how are you going to cut these little pieces i'm so
24:15confused on how this works to be perfectly honest you make a pattern and then you lay them on the glass
24:20and then you trace around and that gives you a puzzle where you cut okay i feel good about this what about
24:25this for like the mountains i feel like we've got sky water and mountain and mountain i think that's
24:32great are you going to be able to do this i can do this i don't think it's going to be that bad
24:37sometimes jenny she just she's not an artist she's a designer and it's a different thing
24:42what'd you say nothing what did you say i'm not an artist i'm not an artist i know i'm not anything else
24:50you would recommend i get from you i'm in here no that's it see this is why i love glass is stained
24:56glass the technology the only thing that's really improved since the 1400s is that grinder yeah that's
25:03it so everything that i use and do is what they used to do way way back and i just love that i love
25:10that too how do you feel knowing that your husband does basically like michelangelo over here you're
25:16basically the sculptor of the david at this moment nice maybe that's why you're named david that's right
25:26we're here at neiman we have the stone on the house it looks so good we have the dormer up
25:33all the cabinetry is here and in the living room we're bringing in the stone that we used
25:39on the exterior to the fireplace giving this whole lakeside cottage a fresh feel

27:01grandbaby has arrived so we're picking up the pace at her house to try to get it done in just three
27:05weeks so she can be close to her family paint is happening the bar is underway with the green tile
27:11i had being installed kitchen countertops are going in that's a big piece of countertop this place
27:19is coming together let's keep going how's it going going pretty good this color is so pretty
27:34is the color pretty or is the work that your it's impressive amazing husband did pretty so basically
27:40what i'm doing is i'm not following these lines exactly because once i started doing this i realized
27:46it doesn't really matter if the lines are exact because i can make these seams wherever i want
27:53so even though i just broke that piece it'll work it'll work this is like doing a puzzle which is
27:59basically torture so what is this thing that's my grinder that's an old it's like a relic that came
28:06from the 14th century you want to try to grind no come on i just don't want to i know you i know
28:16there's an artistic side in there there is an artist you could just put out the colors you're
28:19not able to pick out colors you can cut and paste i can pick out the colors that's my art i think you
28:24just insulted you insulted me first all right i'm going back to work this stained glass project i
28:33thought would be really really special for debbie and i wanted to be really peaceful and beautiful and
28:37evoke a calming emotion not like a stark in your face jarring emotion yes see what you think of the
28:45sun okay i think i'm close oh it's so pretty i think the colors perfect i feel really good about this now
28:55we've got about two weeks left on the neiman house we're putting in new lighting we've got hardware to
29:02install we have a fireplace let's go we've got i mean we're moving along we're close
29:11so nice and clean perfect are we all set in the pantry oh yeah it looks so cute i can't wait to put
29:21the vending machine are we going to do that today yeah i'm not looking forward to this one i know

31:15with the tile that jenny wanted she picked out a grout that just matches you can kind of see the
31:21white that's that's in there right now so something that just matches that so i'm gonna just grout this
31:27stuff in sponge it off and then silicone the edges and get this thing in the mail how stinking pretty is
31:36this table looks so good you did such a good job thank you i think brian's gonna love it don't you
31:42whoever wins the house is gonna love it do you think they'll change the name of the
31:46competition to the dream home and table no i think they'll call it the hgtv dream table

41:11cabinets oh my gosh another perfect room look at the shower i love the tile but i love the size
41:21it's a nice big shower and a soaking tub and again bringing in that walnut that we have there at the
41:27house so it feels traditional but modern this is just gorgeous and you have a separate water closet now
41:33so yeah proper door should we go say goodbye i think you got to take over your place now let's go
41:39out here i think dave and jenny hit it out of the ballpark as they say this whole house really is in
41:46honor of greg he always said in the beginning he bought it for me turned out he loved it

42:19play a lot of games yeah we play a lot of games just beautiful and then the stained glass when we'd
42:26go to our church we had beautiful stained glass windows and greg would always say pick one piece
42:34in the stained glass and that's your piece we're all going to have pieces this is absolutely beautiful
42:42we thought the view was nice before that's what i said it looks so much better without screens
42:47that's the thing as you get older in life that you gravitate to the things that you know are going
42:53to be priceless
