00:00Secret stately homes a priceless part of our heritage and now some are throwing
00:05open the doors Wow I like it already to auctioneer and country house connoisseur
00:10Angus Ashworth you walk in here you cannot not be amazed with it it's sort
00:15of a visual overload he's on a mission to help save these historic houses for
00:19the nation more than 200 have vanished since the war they've just bulldozed
00:24people couldn't afford them they were lost forever he'll be hunting through
00:28lofts and cellars oh I've spotted something that's you see look yeah for
00:35forgotten treasure look at that bad boy this is like a dream for me it's quite a
00:41mess for me I don't think I can do anything with the toilets to raise cash to
00:47help fund renovation or repairs it's a battle you know something goes wrong
00:51every day something significant breaks every week and the up keeps enormous he'll
00:56be diving into life as a weekend house guest and occasional Butler arriving in
01:06style to experience a lost way of life in some of Yorkshire's most stunning stately
01:16homes
01:23should be just a nice smooth flight for you Angus
01:26I'm afraid the catering is not very good on board this flight today
01:29wonderful
01:32Angus and pilot James are heading to the most iconic of Yorkshire's dales
01:37Wensleydale constable Burton has been in the same family for the past 400 years
01:44the main house looks as splendid as when it was first built Angus may be a weekend
01:54guest but he's got work to do some of the estates outbuildings have fallen into
01:59disrepair Angus has offered to help raise some cash to give them a new lease of life
02:06look at the frontage absolutely stunning
02:10like many fine Georgian houses constable Burton is all about symmetry proportion columns and porticoes
02:18it's supposed to resemble a Roman temple in Yorkshire
02:25today it's the home of Darcy and Imogen Wyville along with their three children
02:33I remember being here as a child running around not really paying attention to anything
02:37didn't really understand the bigger picture didn't really take in the art
02:41and then suddenly waking up here and I understood the responsibilities
02:45I always knew being the eldest son that this was going to fall on my shoulders to do
02:50I remember when we first met you were incredibly excited about showing me constable Burton
02:57and I remember we went up onto the roof of the house and we sort of looked out of the parkland
03:02and he was like you know would would you be able to you know make this your home
03:07and of course you're like yes of course I would
03:11Darcy's parents restored the main house back to its Georgian splendor
03:15but many of the estates of the buildings are now crumbling
03:18a few years ago Darcy and Imogen left their careers in London to continue looking after this Yorkshire estate
03:25the overhead costs here are eye-watering
03:28sometimes you feel it's a one step forward and two steps back
03:31but you've got to keep on picking yourself up and keep on moving forward
03:34we're using the timber off the estate to heat the place
03:38when I first turned up here the oil bill was something like 30 grand a year
03:42and that was 12-15 years ago so you can imagine the multiples of that now
03:47Darcy and Imogen hope Angus can help them raise some extra money
03:51to get the repair work in the outbuildings started
03:55oh that is stunning I've driven past this road on many occasions but I've never turned up the drive
04:04and it's wonderful it's going to be amazing to see behind the scenes
04:07and you know houses like this take huge amounts of upkeep work and money
04:13and it's going to be great to see how all that works and what it takes to run a house and a sale
04:19good morning how are you doing?
04:21very well how are you?
04:22very well thank you
04:23welcome to Constable Burton this is my wife Imogen
04:25Darcy
04:26let's go on in
04:27thank you very much thank you
04:31with its high ceilings and grand staircases Constable Burton Hall is a Georgian masterpiece
04:38well this is the heart of the house
04:40Darcy's ancestors have been in Britain for nearly a thousand years
04:45and this is a copy of the role of Battle Abbey in the Hastings
04:50the Wyvilles originally came over from France with William the Conqueror in 1066
04:55and they've been here ever since
04:58you've got William the Conqueror at the top, William Leroy
05:00and then you've got the principal knights around the outside
05:03so here we are down there
05:05there you are
05:06there's the Wyville shield
05:07the birth of really modern-day England as we know it
05:10so who's this then above you on the little list?
05:13that's the Wyvilles
05:15oh
05:16Wyvilles, we've been having problems with those since 1066
05:22this is where you're going to be staying for the night
05:24this is bedroom number three
05:26this is our principal bedroom
05:27absolutely
05:28look at that view
05:29you've got this incredible view up the park
05:30so we're right over the portico
05:32we're right over the portico, yeah
05:33yeah
05:34and there you've got the park and the fountain
05:36and the ionic columns and everything
05:39Constable Burton, it is an absolute gem
05:44a jewel of the Yorkshire Dales
05:46it is incredible
05:47and looking out this window
05:48over the portico
05:50up the parkland
05:51it's wonderful
05:52I think I'm going to enjoy this weekend
05:54I think they're going to have me working quite hard
05:56so I will enjoy this later
05:58it's time for Angus to see the problems
06:03and the work that needs to be done
06:05welcome to Garden Cottage
06:09come on in
06:10first on the long list of to-do jobs
06:13is this old estate building
06:15which needs a bit of love and attention
06:17a little fixer-upper
06:19I'm assuming these are the old sort of estate workers cottages around here
06:22absolutely yeah
06:24the idea with this property is that we're going to renovate it
06:28Matt and Joe, our brilliant chef and his wife require a bigger house
06:32so we want to get this sorted out for them
06:35so they can move in here and have a little bit more space
06:37back in the day
06:39a fine country house had to provide bed and board for its many staff
06:43large staff numbers are now a thing of the past
06:46but without urgent restoration
06:48this cottage could soon become derelict
06:51we've got the laundry block, the stable block and the coach houses
06:55you know there's an everlasting massive list of repairs and renewals and stuff to have done
07:00there's never a day goes by without something's rearing up
07:02you're like we didn't see that one coming
07:04and they're never particularly glamorous jobs
07:07but they come with quite a hefty price tag quite often
07:09so this is the current project
07:11yeah so this is the current project
07:12and hopefully you know if we find some nice bits and pieces in the buildings
07:15then you know the funds from that will go to this
07:21we've come into this cottage and it's beautiful
07:23you can see the potential
07:24but it needs a lot of modernisation
07:26it needs just a big facelift
07:28bathroom needs completely redoing
07:30rejigging the back bedroom
07:32all the kitchen to go in
07:33so that's a lot of money
07:35and it's got to be found
07:36so if I can help raise some of that money
07:39through items that are surplus
07:41get them to auction
07:42raise a bit of money
07:43I don't think it will pay for all the renovations
07:45but it's certainly going to help take the burden off a little bit
07:48this is the old laundry
07:50tread carefully
07:51200 years ago
07:53this would have been full of wet washing
07:55now it's crammed with old furniture
07:58time for Angus to make a start
08:00and see how much money he can raise
08:03this was the business end of things
08:06where they used to have the washing facilities
08:08next door was the sort of fires and the drying facilities
08:11and then there was a sort of staff flat above that
08:14but it's a building badly in need of renovation
08:17the great thing about most country houses
08:19they have outbuildings
08:20things weren't thrown out back in the day
08:22so sheds just get filled up with layers and layers
08:25from generations and generations
08:27and it's sat there not being used
08:29and actually some of it's great stuff
08:31all these things surplaced a requirement
08:33do you think?
08:34do you know a man who might be interested in them?
08:35I do, I like that
08:37what is that?
08:38light fitting
08:40would have been gas originally
08:42let's see why it's had the gas
08:43oh yes
08:44lights in there
08:45so that would have been
08:46fair
08:47well turn of the century
08:48looks like it could be Benson
08:50wonderful sort of arts and crafts designer
08:52these beautiful shaped sort of lamps
08:54would have had sort of glass in it originally
08:56like a lantern
08:58okay
08:59it's rusted up
09:00that shot blasted back
09:01waxed up
09:03replaced the gas fitting with electric fitting
09:05you have got a superb light fitting
09:07the arts and crafts movement influenced architecture
09:11furniture and household items
09:13a stark reaction to the modern industrial revolution
09:17even in this condition
09:19this lantern could make three figures
09:22what is that?
09:23not the toilet system
09:25some things might be staying
09:27but there's still loads
09:28Angus can take off to auction
09:30sink bracket was really quite nice
09:32and sometimes what people do is
09:33they'll get a nice bit of timber
09:34fix it on top
09:35or a bit of marble
09:36make it a bit like a console table
09:38but the brackets there
09:39so that's quite nice
09:40and then fireplaces galore
09:42yeah loads of those over here
09:44so you have a shuffle through
09:45a lot of these are Georgian ones
09:47quite nice early ones
09:49they're nice
09:50and if you've got the right space for them
09:51and you know an old fireplace
09:53you know a lot of people are now
09:54reinstating them as a feature in a bedroom
09:56yes
09:57100%
09:58for Angus
09:59where there's rust
10:00there's cash
10:01well
10:02maybe
10:03the renovation pot
10:05is growing
10:06slowly
10:07to raise enough cash
10:09Angus needs to dig up a lot more hidden treasure
10:12auctioneer Angus Ashworth is staying the weekend at Constable Burton Hall
10:32owners Darcy and Imogen need his help raising money to renovate an old estate cottage
10:39and so
10:40the search continues for saleable items that Angus can take off to auction
10:45go to the other side of the laundry block
10:46we'll go upstairs to the flat
10:47there's a few pieces up there which
10:49I think might be of interest
10:50brilliant
10:51lead on
10:52thank you
10:56great
10:57come on in
10:58this was the old staff accommodation for the laundry block
11:01great room but
11:02I can also see the amount of work you've got
11:05one two three
11:09okay
11:12so have you got the tops to them
11:14um
11:16somewhere
11:17I mean what do you think they are probably
11:18well they're the base unit
11:19they're a pair
11:20they're nice
11:21either they would have had another chest on top
11:23or potentially
11:25they could have had something that sat across the two of them
11:27but that's not the end of the world
11:28because somebody can actually get a piece of marble cut for the two of them
11:31and make a nice pair of side cabinets
11:33so
11:34would have been nice if they had a top
11:35but it's not the end of the world
11:36these mahogany base units might be missing a bit
11:40but Angus thinks dealers in the trade will still take a punt
11:44they're not complete but they are quality quality things
11:47I mean you can't get timber like that
11:49you know that mahogany
11:50and actually if you've got a bit of imagination a bit of creativity
11:52you can do something with it
11:54150 plus years ago they were made
11:56and they're still as good as the day they were made
11:58solid I mean
11:59stuff was made to last
12:01look at the house
12:02have a crack at those
12:03excellent thank you
12:04the old laundry keeps on giving
12:07if you've got Angus's eye
12:09some quite nice bits in here
12:11so these two chairs
12:12these are surface requirements
12:14yeah well they're up here
12:15they make a nice bedroom chair
12:16don't they
12:17yeah
12:18two very different styles
12:19I mean classic Victorian low
12:21sort of nursing type chair
12:22which is nice
12:23get reupholstered
12:24just a nice easy chair
12:25and then this
12:26is a lot fancier
12:28more French style
12:29you can carve wood frame
12:31and then sort of like a plaster
12:32and then sort of gilding
12:33gilding over the top of it
12:34so it is prone to chipping
12:36but this
12:37this has been upholstered again later
12:39they don't make huge amounts of money
12:41but it will sell
12:42you know somebody will reupholster that
12:43and then
12:44in contrast to that
12:45a little bit grander
12:46you've got this French style
12:47gilt
12:48sort of 19th century chair
12:49armchair
12:50pulse of seat back and arms
12:51a lot of the gilding's chipped away
12:53damaged bits
12:54you know what
12:55it's quite lovely
12:56despite the condition
12:58Angus thinks this chair
12:59will attract the bidders
13:01nice
13:02I like that
13:03get the house martin's bits off it
13:05and you'll be fine
13:06I like your vision
13:10for Angus
13:11the hunt goes on
13:13rather nice frame here I think
13:15you just need the right size picture
13:17looks like some sort of a mole
13:20could be for a cast for a column
13:21can't say I've ever sold one before
13:23but it's a thing of purpose
13:25there's layer upon layer
13:26to discover in here
13:29yep
13:30there we go
13:31I mean you could actually reuse that
13:32couldn't you?
13:33yeah
13:34yes you could actually reuse that
13:35classic drop leaf
13:36yeah
13:37George the third with this
13:38what we call these pad feet
13:39yep
13:40you can have a look at that
13:41as well mate
13:42we're doing well on this
13:43we're getting a bungling aren't we
13:44might need another van
13:45yeah yeah we'll get to it
13:47great
13:48well that's basically it
13:49for the laundry block
13:50okay
13:51what about that screen
13:52oh sorry yeah
13:53there is the screen here
13:54yeah this thing here
13:55well
13:56okay
13:57four panel screen
13:58in leather
13:59so this would have all been quite
14:01you can see there's traces of the painting on it
14:03yep
14:04it's in a little bit
14:05sorry state of repair
14:06but I think we could brush it off
14:07it's solid enough
14:08yep
14:09people do like them as a bit of a room divider
14:11you know you've got a small flat
14:12you can create that space and rooms
14:14great for if you're doing a zoom call
14:16just put a screen behind you
14:17again you can add that to your collection
14:20wonderful wonderful
14:21no problem
14:22okay
14:23got a good load
14:24good
14:25Victorian leather painted screens can make thousands
14:28in this condition perhaps not
14:31but Angus is sure it'll sell
14:34if it can go let's get it gone
14:36get it into the right auction
14:37the right sale
14:38raise some money that can go back in
14:39reinvested into the estate
14:46the gardens at Constable Burton are famous
14:50every year visitors come from all over the country
14:53to see a very special display
14:56we have to cover the tulips up because everything likes to eat them
14:59the deer the pheasants the mice the hares
15:02they're everywhere aren't they
15:03the tulip festival with its 6,000 blooms is the biggest event in Constable Burton's calendar
15:11it was started by Darcy's father Charles over 25 years ago when he lived in the house
15:18I met a fellow called Ron Blonde whose company were looking for a house to show off their tulips
15:24and I said can I handle it I said well I probably can it's taken 24 odd years to get it right
15:30so we have a big festival in the early first weekend of May
15:34and then that we show them off until the end of May early June
15:37so really we've got to get the site ready for the festival
15:40yeah we do as time pressures are on
15:41right so this is protecting them until the moment of
15:44that's it yeah it's not it's not rocket science we just kind of bring up the sides
15:48make sure these canes come out
15:50they're quite well stuck in
15:52that's it well done that's great
15:54and that's that
15:55bit of a gamble isn't it because if the weather's bad and the festival's a big thing
15:59yeah it's a big thing
16:01shall we get these ones off
16:02I'm conscious I've got to get this done otherwise you know I won't be getting
16:06how many sort of visitors do you expect to get at the festival on average
16:10average festival we're looking for about 1500 people over three days
16:14but yeah I mean we now we've got a lot more modern we now pre-sell the tickets
16:18and our catering tent is Yorkshire famous
16:23excellent
16:24we still get a scone and a sausage roll and a lovely cup of tea and coffee
16:27I think made a big difference because it's something we
16:30in the early days we had a very simple arrangement
16:33very simple teas but now it's a much higher standard
16:35Darcy and his dad know holding on to a country estate is a tough job
16:40which is why the family nickname is particularly apt
16:45the survival wivals
16:47it's frightening I can tell you I mean the money is always an issue
16:50you know with these large houses they eat the stuff up
16:53troubles never come simply you know your broken wall is 25 yards of broken wall
16:59everything's just multiplied
17:02we somehow managed to survive for nearly a thousand years
17:05so everything around here we've planted or built of the whole place
17:09every house in the village every trail in the estate
17:12so it's a lot it is a long ongoing project
17:16so hopefully we'll reach 2066
17:20shortly I won't be around to see it but de-wival might be with a bit of luck
17:25back in the house it's a big day
17:29downstairs has been transformed into a commercial art gallery
17:33for local painter Sophie Roberts
17:36she's painted dozens of flowers a bit of tulip mania in North Yorkshire
17:43to me to you to me to you
17:45but this is also a good opportunity to make some cash
17:48so it's a great friend she's an amazing artist
17:50and she devised the collection the symphony of tulips
17:53so it's been a year in production
17:56she's been hard at work painting them all up
17:58and we've had lots of meetings along the way
18:01and today we're hanging all the artwork
18:03selling Sophie's paintings will also help Darcy and Imogen raise some money
18:08towards the upkeep of Constable Burton
18:12do we know at this point if we've got anybody dairy free
18:18below stairs in the kitchen
18:21Matt the chef and his wife Jo who's head of operations
18:24are finalising tonight's arrangements
18:27the dairy free dessert is chocolate mousse
18:29not only do Matt and Jo run the catering and events at Constable Burton
18:34they are waiting for Garden Cottage to be renovated
18:37as it's to be their new home
18:39we're living in a small cottage on site
18:41and we do some move into a larger cottage with some
18:45the spare bedroom and things so we can have family stay with us
18:48I couldn't do this job if I didn't live here
18:50because of the long hours and irregular days off
18:53tonight it's cocktails and canapes for a hundred guests
18:58and they'll be here shortly
18:59there's always something going on but we're just trying to kind of build on that
19:02but also in a way which doesn't just focus all the activity at the hall
19:06because of course it is the family's private home as well
19:10and it's going to be Rhys leading that
19:12yeah and it's arrivals from 6 30
19:15the guests will arrive any minute
19:18so it's all hands on deck
19:20Angus might be a guest
19:22but he's been roped in to be kitchen porter
19:25barman and waiter
19:27a hundred people for canapes and drinks
19:29yeah
19:30so we've got my work cut out
19:32maybe it gives a hand
19:33I can certainly give you a hand
19:35yeah yeah
19:36they put it on the back of the door there for you
19:37and a hand wash
19:38excellent
19:43how did you get into this job then?
19:44and how did you end up here?
19:45so I've been here on and off since 2016
19:49when Darcy and Imogen took over
19:51the chef had decided to move on
19:52and he'd been here a long time
19:53they reached out to see if I knew anybody who could help
19:57and a few years later I joined full time
19:59and the rest as they say is history
20:01the catering and hospitality business run by Matt and Joe
20:05has become so successful
20:07they have gone into a full time partnership with Darcy and Imogen
20:11providing high-end catering across the whole of the country
20:15as well as significant funds for the house
20:18and I guess from small events to pretty big parties as well
20:22that's right yeah so anything from kind of 20 up to a couple of hundred people
20:26we've got one in a few weeks for 250
20:29all sorts of different private catering
20:31just off the estate so
20:33that's a separate arm of the business completely
20:35canapƩs done
20:37time for Angus to lend his skills at the bar
20:41we've got our tulip bloom
20:43which is a cocktail
20:44what's the main alcoholic ingredient?
20:46so we've got an elderflower gin
20:48that's made with the elderflower from the estates
20:50and topped up a bit of carbon
20:52yeah that's great
20:54two of those
20:55the canapƩs are being scoffed
20:56and the booze is being coiffed
20:58but tonight is really about the guests splashing their cash
21:02and buying some art
21:04people are starting to arrive
21:06and it's sort of an invitation to look at the tulips
21:08before it's open to the public
21:09so private sort of viewing if you like
21:11in conjunction with Sophie Roberts' art exhibition
21:14we've even got our cocktail the tulip bloom
21:18so the key is to sell art
21:20so hopefully we'll get some sales
21:23come on in
21:25look at my
21:26I've like zushed it up a bit
21:28this is wild
21:29doesn't it look so good
21:30this is bright and light and heavenly
21:33I know
21:34I know
21:35first time that we've had an art exhibition
21:37and everyone's been so complimentary about the way it looks in the house
21:41in this room in particular
21:43and I'm just thrilled for Sophie
21:45of course you can say
21:47you can have as many as you like
21:49it might cost you a painting by the end of the night
21:52but you know
21:54it's going alright
21:55you know it's really busy
21:56I've been serving oysters, drinks
21:58people are in the mood
22:00and we're starting to see stickers on the pictures
22:02and that's what tonight's about
22:03the tulips
22:04but also the artwork
22:06I have to wipe my hands
22:08with my face on it
22:09oh you can set the corner of my apron down there
22:11that's no problem
22:18welcome everybody
22:19we are so thrilled to see you all
22:21and more than anything
22:22delighted to host
22:24our incredibly talented friend Sophie Roberts
22:27for her beautiful exhibition
22:28a symphony of tulips
22:30and also thank you to Angus
22:32for being here tonight
22:33and for all of your help
22:35with putting on the event
22:36and for being genuinely
22:37a great asset
22:38the evening
22:44that alright?
22:45I think so
22:46yeah yeah
22:47yeah
22:48yeah
22:49a few more drinks down everybody
22:50and we'll get them done
22:51excellent
22:52well done
22:53thanks
22:54thanks has been amazing
22:55I literally don't want him to leave
22:57setting up the event today was made so much easier
23:00I think he sort of cleared the furniture in this room
23:02in a
23:03in a
23:04you know the drop of a hat
23:06great to see
23:07busy
23:08full
23:09and space should be used shouldn't it
23:11houses like this should be full of life
23:12and it's full of life tonight
23:14great space being utilized
23:15really good
23:16I think the tulips have been well admired
23:18and I think a lot of the pictures have gone
23:19so
23:20I think it's been a good night
23:21It's the second day of Angus's stay at Constable Burton
23:42one of Yorkshire's finest country houses
23:45great night's sleep
23:47and I'm ready for the day ahead
23:49I think
23:50I think we're going to be busy today
23:51it's a busy day on the estate
23:52so
23:53we'll see
23:54we'll see what Darcy's got in store for me
24:00oh
24:01this looks impressive
24:02yeah
24:03well we're going to go for a drive around the estate
24:05this morning
24:06I'm going to take you up to one of our businesses
24:08so hop on in and we'll
24:10we'll get up
24:11okay
24:13Constable Burton has
24:14800 acres of woodland
24:16and
24:17Darcy
24:18has had an idea
24:19how to make this land pay
24:21it takes me back to my military days
24:23this is good
24:24yeah it will do
24:25yeah
24:26this is the yard
24:27this is the yard
24:28this is Woodhall
24:29yep
24:30where we run our charcoal company out of
24:32and this is where
24:34the head of operations up here
24:36so
24:37hop on out
24:39always on the lookout for new business ventures
24:43Darcy set up his own bespoke charcoal company using only estate grown wood
24:49good morning Brian
24:51how's it going guys all right
24:52how's it going
24:53Brian is the boss here
24:56all year round trees are felled
24:58seasoned
24:59sawn into logs and split into workable sizes
25:02now it's time for this wood to be turned into black gold
25:14this is the business end of the charcoal company
25:17the viper kiln
25:19here
25:20obviously it's dried out for a bit
25:21and then it gets brought over here to the kiln
25:23and the kiln gets fired up
25:25so Brian's just starting to open up the chamber
25:28so that allows it to drop down into the bucket
25:30exactly
25:31and you'll start to hear a few bits go
25:33like that
25:34yeah
25:35and then we close it back up again
25:36you can see the barrels now starting to smoke
25:38oh god
25:39yo there's flames coming out of there now
25:40flames coming out of there now
25:41yeah wow
25:42and you want me to do this
25:43yes
25:44okay
25:45you'll be right
25:46yeah fine fine
25:50like all country estates
25:52the Wyvilles have had to find ways to make them pay
26:02hard work
26:04yeah
26:05let me just feel that
26:07I just...
26:08it might have a bit
26:14now be very careful and pull it straight out
26:16the art of charcoal making is to cook and not burn the wood
26:20so the flames need to be put out immediately
26:23get your lid on it
26:27that's it
26:30there you go
26:31that's how we make charcoal
26:33I've done some mucky hot sweaty jobs in my life
26:37yeah that was hot
26:38I mean seriously hot
26:39Darcy's very passionate about it
26:40and it's about using products off the estate
26:42I think people think it's blacked iron dinner every night in these houses
26:46and being waited on
26:47but no actually you have to get down and dirty if you want to keep the places running
26:52Darcy's charcoal isn't cheap
26:54but sales show there's demand for this handmade product
26:58wonderful
26:59wonderful
27:00well thanks for that
27:01no it's been brilliant great thank you very much
27:02great to see you
27:03it's been good to see
27:04what goes on man since
27:05it's very easy to pick up a bag of charcoal isn't it
27:06and not actually realise the work that goes in
27:08yeah
27:09right
27:10I'll go wear a D jacket I think and cool down
27:12thanks very much
27:13cheers
27:14excellent job
27:15back at the house
27:19Angus knows he needs to raise much more cash if he's to really help with the cottage renovation
27:25so it's time for another rummage
27:28these are our stables
27:30horses were exceptionally important to the Georgians
27:34for transport for work
27:37with no horses anymore constable Burton's stables have become a dumping ground
27:43there's all sorts of bits of wubs in here
27:45often a great place for Angus to find unwanted treasures
27:49you walk into here it's just wow
27:51hasn't really been touched you know for the last few hundred years
27:54so wonderful wonderful stables
27:56and of course like any space they'll have got filled up
27:59so there could be some interesting bits in here
28:02you've got a nice fireplace there that's been taken out
28:04yeah
28:05that's
28:06cast metal
28:07probably done in the Victorian period
28:08mm-hmm
28:09we've got the top
28:10to go on it there
28:11and then
28:12the inset fireplace there
28:13so again
28:14that's right yeah
28:15there's a whole fireplace there
28:16that will sell for a feature room
28:18if you want to make a nice feature
28:20that fireplace is a classic
28:21we can definitely find a home for that
28:23with more fireplaces to add to the hall
28:26the renovation fund is increasing
28:28but Angus really needs to find some big ticket items
28:32great well let's go have a look at the next one
28:34okay
28:36oh
28:37butcher's block staying
28:38butcher's block you can I mean if you
28:40it's there because it's not wanted by Matt the chef
28:43I mean that would probably be 150 250
28:45but butcher's block's really popular
28:47more serviceable than on a stand like this
28:49the ones on the old fashioned wooden stands
28:51a little bit more character
28:52but people love butcher's blocks
28:54do they?
28:55great
28:56yeah
28:57definitely
28:58the next stall
28:59there's a real mixture in here
29:02we've got the big chest there
29:04yeah
29:05big trunk
29:06that's a big old war
29:08old transport war chest I think
29:10yeah
29:11belonged to my grandfather
29:12he obviously had to ship his stuff around as well
29:14ahead of him so
29:15and that said it's been in the hold of the SS Corfu
29:20SS Corfu
29:21okay
29:22wonderful I mean when they've got writing things like that
29:24on it that adds again a bit more history a bit more interest
29:28with a traceable history attached to it
29:30and the provenance from a fine country house
29:32this chest could make several hundred pounds
29:36the rugs be good
29:37um
29:38it's had a little uh
29:39little accident or two but
29:41but we could still do something with those
29:43yeah
29:44more recently they were in the open
29:45oh were they?
29:46yeah
29:47anyway
29:48you're welcome
29:49fantastic
29:50but suddenly
29:51Angus spots a couple of chairs
29:53diamond in the rough
29:55chairs
29:56they're quite nice
29:57do you know any history to these?
30:01I know that those came out of the outer hall
30:04okay
30:05yeah
30:06well they're really nice
30:0718th century broad seated dining chairs
30:09so this is quite typical of the Georgian period to have these quite broad seats
30:13with ball and claw feet
30:14lovely calf detail in mahogany
30:16and I mean there's a bit of damage on them
30:19um
30:20but I mean they would sell quite well they're nice
30:22although these chairs are damaged
30:24Angus knows dealers may well get excited
30:27sending their price skywards
30:29lovely chairs
30:30big broad seats
30:31that's always an indicator that we've got good age there
30:33lovely carving on it
30:35mahogany
30:36the ball and claw feet
30:37real quality
30:38but what's really nice about these
30:40is the history and the provenance
30:41they've been in the house and part of the house for a long time
30:44that is the difference between a
30:47twenty pound chair and a few hundred pounds chair
30:50the afternoon in the stables has been quite profitable
30:53and added to the items from the laundry block
30:56it's all useful cash for the cottage renovation
30:59I think there's quite a bit in here
31:00I mean I can get the lads across
31:01we can get it all gathered up
31:02got a nice country house sale coming up
31:04I mean we can't get any more country house than this can we?
31:12Owning a country house is about preserving history
31:15it's also about looking to the future
31:18lovely afternoon
31:19and for Darcy and Imogen
31:21they believe that's tourism
31:23right well we're going to go up towards the caravan park now
31:25give you a little cry
31:26back in the seventies
31:28Darcy's father opened the estate caravan park
31:32hey so here we are
31:34wow
31:36here we go
31:37nice busy day
31:38great
31:39well welcome to the caravan park
31:41this is Tony
31:42hi Tony
31:43hi Tony
31:44Angus how are you doing?
31:45you alright?
31:46this small park is for touring caravans
31:48but Darcy's got much bigger plans for the future
31:50and if they get off the drawing board
31:52it could raise millions
31:54we've got permission for a new site next door to this
31:58here it is
31:59so
32:00here it is
32:01this is the future of the Consul Burton estate
32:03or I hope it is anyway
32:04blank canvas ready for some lodges
32:06yeah
32:07yeah yeah no it is
32:08I mean it's been um
32:09it's been a long time coming
32:10I'm hoping that this is going to be
32:12the sort of same sort of legacy that my father's done with the caravan park
32:15we've got we secured planning permission for 45 lodges
32:18what we we didn't want to buy these units just off the shelf
32:21we wanted to put our own mark on the place
32:24we might incorporate some stone walls because obviously the Yorkshire Dales are famous for that
32:27probably going to cost you a bit more but the end result and feel of the place is going to be unique
32:32yeah exactly I mean we want to do it properly
32:35back in the day farming would have supported country estates
32:38today owners have to diversify to survive
32:41Darcy and Imogen hope this parkland will soon be Yorkshire's newest lodge park
32:46tourism probably pays a lot better than agriculture
32:49you know you go back 200 years this was all agriculture that supported the house
32:52those days are long gone you know that's not going to come back
32:55so you've got to look at new ways of doing it
32:58so originally this was the entrance to Constable Burton Hall so the gates of the
33:04of the lodge park are the beginning and then there it is it's just sort of
33:09suddenly leaps out of on the horizon and it just sits so beautifully
33:15this is arguably Darcy and Imogen's legacy that they're going to do is install this lodge park
33:21they're working in tune with the landscape designing them to match the Dales barns
33:26they've put a lot of thought into this which actually might cost them a little bit more in the short term
33:31but I think what it means is they end up with this beautiful sort of landscape
33:36enhancing the landscape that's there but also generate something that will provide for their children
33:42grandchildren just like the caravan park that their dad set up
33:45Angus's weekend in the country at Constable Burton Hall is nearly over
33:51after being fully immersed in estate life it's time to get back to the day job
33:57for Darcy and Imogen the work of endless events functions and of course the charcoal business continues
34:06wonderful well thank you for an incredible weekend
34:10oh it's been a real pleasure having you
34:12it's been an absolute pleasure having you here with us
34:13well the hospitality has been phenomenal
34:15we've really enjoyed it
34:16brilliant thank you
34:17see you soon
34:18cheers bye
34:19okay bye
34:20part of me coming for the weekend is is to help out in some small aspect and you know
34:25gone through all the outbuildings and found some great things to sell
34:28so you know we'll get the lads across here get into our country house sale
34:30and we'll raise some money in the grand scheme of things you know it's not going to be huge amounts
34:34but it's items that are no longer needed and that money goes back into the estate again so it all helps
34:41you know it's the day before the country house auction angus has arranged a private viewing for invited guests and dealers in the trade
35:10that's a solid brace
35:13I mean look at that house right leg at the back with that pleat in it
35:16yeah
35:17despite the furniture from Constable Burton being in need of restoration
35:21dealer Luke Arnold likes what he's seeing
35:24everything's a bit tired a bit sleepy but that's fine that's how we want to find it
35:29I've got restorers that can do the work on things tied it all up so yeah
35:32although it maybe looks to some people like a load of junk it might look like it should have gone on a bonfire
35:37there's actually some some really nice bits and pieces
35:40the chairs from Constable Burton are creating quite a buzz
35:44the catalogue says they are in the style of the great English cabinet maker Thomas Chippendale
35:50simply mentioning his name could send the price skywards
35:55it's the morning of the country house auction
36:10all right Laura yeah good we excited for the sale
36:14a bit of a stir about this one yeah I think we should do all right
36:17it's 11.41
36:18there we are the Germans
36:20Constable Burton a wonderful house
36:21interesting mixed items
36:23some bits are very tired
36:25a little bit tatty
36:26are they too far gone to sell
36:28a lot of them need a lot of work
36:29but some interesting bits
36:31I think we should get some reasonable results
36:33there's one or two things that we know will be a bit of a struggle
36:35they've got a couple of bits
36:37a couple of bits I quite rate
36:39particularly two chairs

39:37and we can start this lot at 50 pounds
39:39I mean obviously the standout lot is the pair of chairs
39:41we had an inkling they might do well
39:43I think you know I don't think we've missed anything
39:45we all rated them that they're a good chair
39:48quality sells
39:49and that's proved it today
39:50so one good result and kind of what we expected on the other
39:53so all in all a good day
39:5540 are you all sure?
39:56selling then at 140
39:58140 pounds
40:04the following day
40:06and Angus is on the road again

40:16and the renovations
40:17so yeah
40:18and give them some good news
40:20we had some great results for them at the auction
40:22the chairs particularly did well
40:24it'll be good to have a catch up
40:30hello
40:31oh morning

40:38yeah you've got the weather with you again
40:39well the good news is
40:40we can add to the budget
40:42great
40:43at the moment
40:44you've got 2,311 pounds
40:46brilliant
40:47okay well that'll help with the first fix electrics
40:49or something like that
40:51I'm sure it'll soon disappear
40:52I know
40:53into the ether
40:54you got a good touch with a pair of chairs that were broken
40:57you know Victorian pair of a sort of a Chimperdale style
41:00yes
41:01but yeah we've got a thousand pounds for those
41:03okay
41:04that's great
41:05but it created a lot of excitement
41:06a lot of people came to look at them
41:07okay
41:08I think hoping they were something older than Victoria
41:10they were Chimperdale
41:11yes
41:12perfect
41:13we need to go over to the cottage and have a look around and see what we can spend the money on
41:17yeah
41:18or what I've already spent it on
41:19yes exactly
41:20come on over
41:22over in Garden Cottage
41:24the renovations are coming along slowly
41:27come on in
41:29oh wow
41:31as with all building projects
41:33unexpected problems have hit the schedule
41:36these guys have done an amazing job
41:37this has been the sort of trickier end of the house
41:40when we got up into the roof
41:41we realised that the original roof had collapsed
41:44and basically they just bought it up
41:47and they just
41:48they just
41:49luckily they put quite substantial timbers in there
41:52yeah
41:53but we are cleaning it out
41:55yeah
41:56they've had like seven bags of straw and birds nests
41:59and god knows what up there
42:01so that's all getting a good clean out
42:02you're getting to the end of what I call the mucky work
42:05yes
42:06well it's clean
42:07yeah
42:08I suppose the next steps will be plastering
42:10yes
42:11and then the electrician is going to come in
42:12once I get all that cleaned out
42:13he's coming in to do another fix
42:16it was really nice to show around the cottage
42:18and show what we've been up to since he was last here
42:20we're absolutely delighted what happened at the auction actually
42:22I mean it's going to go towards some of the work over there in the cottage
42:25some of it
42:26obviously delighted that the auction went well
42:29and that the few items that we sent got a good price
42:33it doesn't stand still
42:35even in the time I've been away I can see progress
42:37the cottage
42:38I mean they're really going for that
42:40and getting it turned around as quick as they can
42:42and that's wonderful
42:43you know delivering the news about the auction
42:45and the funds that we've raised
42:46okay it's not going to pay for the cottage
42:48but items that are surplus requirement in the outbuildings
42:51I've made some money that's going to go back into restoration
42:54of part of the estate
42:55and I think that's a wonderful circle as it should be
42:58so it's been wonderful to be back
42:59and long may the progress continue
43:02Angus's job is complete
43:04soon the garden cottage will be back in use
43:07another part of Constable Burton saved for the future
