00:00The beach along the Indian Ocean stretches for miles, with rolling sand dunes as far as the eye can see.
00:09Not one footprint marks the untouched deep brown sand.
00:13We are casting into wild ocean, catching more fish than we can count.
00:18But the adventure doesn't start here.
00:21It starts deep in the African bush, hunting one of the most dangerous animals on planet Earth.
00:27Somewhere out there, a white rhino is on the move.
00:31His tracking collar has failed, his protection is gone, and he's due for critical immunizations.
00:37The only way to help him is to find him, on foot with a tranquilizer gun, and a team of doctors waiting to step in.
00:45But finding him means walking over 10 miles in brutal terrain, tracking an animal that's already outsmarted poachers.
00:53One that doesn't know we're here to help. One that doesn't run away when he feels threatened.
00:58Behind me. Behind me.
01:00I'm Kyle Green. I travel the globe with my best friends hunting for wild game and dynamic conservation stories.
01:15Join us on our adventure as we escape the shackles of the modern world and gain a deeper understanding of where our food comes from.
01:22Welcome to the Greenway Outdoors.
01:27The white rhinoceros is the second largest land animal on Earth.
01:32Only the elephant is bigger.
01:34A full-grown male can weigh over 5,000 pounds, with rare giants pushing 8,000 pounds.
01:40They are built like tanks, but they can run 30 miles per hour and detect you from hundreds of yards away.
01:47On this massive South African preserve, miles of thick bush stretch in every direction.
01:53Somewhere in it is the rhino we're after.
01:56His tracking collar has failed.
01:58The very device anti-poaching teams use to stay close and protect him.
02:03Now he's vulnerable, and he's due for immunizations and lab work.
02:07Which means we have to get close enough for a tranquilizer dart.
02:11Finding him won't be easy.
02:13The bush can swallow an animal whole, or send it charging right back at you.
02:18When I woke up this morning, I didn't think I was going on an actual hunt.
02:22I figured we would just drive up, dart the rhino, and that would be that.
02:25The biologist we met with painted a very different picture.
02:28Even a needle of this length will just get under the skin.
02:32Really?
02:33Yeah.
02:34Like, and if it's perfectly perpendicular.
02:36They're very quick.
02:37We put the similar dart on an arrow, they'll hit the arrow out of the air with their horn.
02:42Yeah.
02:43Yeah.
02:44So, as much as it's this big lumpy thing you think's not as fast, if they're attentive, they're incredibly fast.
02:49You know, you think a sharp thing like this, you just need to shoot it at the animal to get stuck, it won't.
02:54Sure.
02:55They bounce off.
02:56You can't believe how easily they pop right off.
02:58The tranquilizer dart has to hit perfectly.
03:01And with these guns, that's easier said than done.
03:04Put it in the wrong place, and you could actually kill the rhino.
03:08I've killed a lot of animals without the drugs, just with a needle.
03:11No kidding.
03:12Yeah.
03:13You can't believe, even like, short needle like this, if it's just right, I had a buffalo
03:17cow turn, get it just between the ribs, it cuts a little artery on a lung, dead.
03:21That's it.
03:22I had a hippo bull that jumped around the water, and I got him under the eye.
03:27And it injected around the nerve going to the brain.
03:30Killed it.
03:31You know, so, even though it's just a needle, we think, ah, but I'm telling you, the needle
03:34in the right place can be hazardous.
03:36Of course.
03:37Yeah.
03:38This has a whole bunch of quirks, but because it was made in the United States of America,
03:42don't blame me.
03:43Oh.
03:44Gotcha.
03:45It's my fault now.
03:46Yeah, yeah.
03:47A couple of things that go wrong first.
03:49Perfect.
03:50So, this has these O-rings on it.
03:53The air comes out of here and goes into the barrel.
03:56And invariably, this thing will decide to do this.
04:00Oh.
04:01Yeah.
04:02And then when you shoot it, it just goes pow.
04:03Yeah.
04:04Okay.
04:05So, and they didn't design this for rhino hunting, because listen, I try to hold it,
04:11push it real closed, and that's the quiet way, and then tug on it.
04:14Make sure.
04:15So, yeah, it wasn't made to be quiet.
04:16I took a few practice shots with the tranquilizer gun to get the feel for it.
04:21Knowing that once I get close to the rhino on the stalk, my shot has to be perfect.
04:26My job will be to fire the tracker into him, while Dr. Alex Lewis handles the tranquilizer dart.
04:33The tracker helps us locate the rhino after he's darted, because he could run for quite a while before the drugs take hold.
04:40The tranquilizer won't knock him out.
04:43It just makes him sit down like a dog.
04:45But once he sits, Dr. Alex says he can't get up again.
04:48So we'll tip him over carefully to fit him with the new collar and his immunizations.
04:53The buffalo are fighting each other, yeah.
04:57Wow.
04:58He said that all these buffalo tracks are here, and they're here fighting each other.
05:03This is like where we were gonna get a buffalo bull or something popping up, so just, everyone pay attention.
05:12I just need a quick 30 seconds to load up and we'll be just safe.
05:19Finding fresh buffalo sign changes everything.
05:23Cape buffalo are known as the Black Death, one of the most dangerous animals in Africa.
05:29If we run into one of them in thick bush, they won't run.
05:32They'll come straight at us.
05:34The Cape buffalo is one of the big five.
05:36And people have hunted it for many years because the Cape buffalo is so dangerous.
05:40And they're in here, so that's something else you gotta watch for.
05:43That's one that'll just charge you.
05:45Yeah, we don't want to surprise them.
05:47No.
05:48That's when the charge is coming.

06:09Your adventure starts here.
06:15We are in South Africa tracking down a white rhino who's in need of our medical attention.
06:22And every step brings us deeper into his world.
06:25Along the way, we're learning just how incredible and unpredictable this animal really is.
06:30What do they eat mostly?
06:31Just grass.
06:32Just grass.
06:33So they're one of the best habitat rejuvenators because they just bulk graze.
06:38Nice.
06:39They eat it.
06:40You'll see now.
06:41So they're white comes from the Dutch for wide, veit.
06:47Okay.
06:48Which is a wide mouth.
06:50Okay.
06:51And then English heard it as veit as white.
06:54Oh.
06:55And so it became a white rhino.
06:56So it's actually a wide mouthed rhino.
06:58But we call it a white rhino.
07:00Leave it to us.
07:01Just be like that.
07:02They're saying white I think.
07:03We'll go with that.
07:04We are covering a massive amount of ground.
07:07Checking every one of the rhino's usual hangouts.
07:10And coming up empty.
07:11Then, nearly six hours and ten miles into our hunt, we finally hear Tommy's whistle.
07:17Our signal that he has spotted the rhino.
07:24Tommy's separated from us and he's whistling to us.
07:28Through the thick brush, we see him at last.
07:31But he's not alone.
07:32A young female rests beside him.
07:35Now we've got two sets of ears, two noses.
07:37Ready to catch the faintest scent or sound.
07:40Their bodies seem to blend into one in the thick brush.
07:43But we have to make 100% certain we dart the right animal.
07:47Alex and I move in, slow and silent.
07:50Closing the gap to dart gun range.
07:53Both darts hit their mark perfectly.
08:06Alex scrambles up a tree to keep eyes on him.
08:09But the rhino slips out of sight fast.
08:12Okay, so we're going to take off the drone right now.
08:14It's kind of frantic going on right now.
08:16Everyone's yelling and running around.
08:17We need to find the rhino fast.
08:18It could fall and be in an awkward position and we've got to get to it before it's there long.
08:22AJ's going to take up the drone to try and find it.
08:25So you've got to wonder if he's going to drop in a highly sunlit area or if he's going to drop in the shade.
08:30Because if he's in the shade, these shadows are dark out here and...
08:33It's way harder to see.
08:34It's hard to see.
08:35Even hard to see just looking at this display.
08:37Wait a minute.
08:39Might be something there.
08:41Is that it?
08:44Bring it down.
08:47Yep, that's it.
08:49It's right there.
08:50Which means it's...
08:52It's that way.
08:55We found the rhino sitting, just like Dr. Lewis said he would be.
08:59Now, I was told once a tranquilized rhino was sitting, he couldn't get back up.
09:04So we moved in to begin our work.
09:06This is a raw and uncut look at what happened next through the eyes of our cameraman, Andy.
09:12Get behind me.
09:13Get behind me.
09:14Get behind me.
09:15Get behind me.
09:18Andy, get behind me!
09:19Get behind me!
09:20Get behind me!
09:21Get behind me!
09:22Get behind me!
09:23Get behind me!
09:24Get behind me!
09:25Get behind me!
09:26You're good!
09:27Oh, .
09:28Come here, Andy.
09:29Come here.
09:30Go back to the car, Andy.
09:31Yep.
09:32I thought you were right on me.
09:33I'll take him back to the car.
09:34You're good.
09:35You're good.
09:36You're good, dude.
09:37Ooh!
09:38Are you okay?
09:39Hold on.
09:40Let me turn.
09:41Are you okay?
09:42Let me look at you.
09:43That's camera's .
09:44Huh?
09:45Camera's .
09:46I don't know.
09:47They're pretty tough.
09:48I'm tired, dude.
09:49Are you good?
09:50You think you're okay?
09:51Huh?
09:52Here.
09:53Let's see.
09:54Let me look at you.
09:55There's no screen.
09:56There's nothing I can get off of.
09:58Hey, man.
09:59You did great.
10:00You did great.
10:01You did perfect.
10:02You did great.
10:03Here.
10:04Let me look at you.
10:05You're okay.
10:06You're okay.
10:07Actually, you're perfect.
10:08And you've got .
10:10I'm embarrassed.
10:11Oh, don't be embarrassed.
10:12No, no, no, no.
10:13You have the ultimate story.
10:14When the rhino charged, Andy fell into a bush.
10:17And the rhino rammed into him with his horn.
10:20We thank God that the rhino was dehorned less than a year ago.
10:24Because a sharp horn could have caused mortal damage.
10:27Andy is also lucky that in the chaos, the rhino didn't step on him.
10:31Because that 6,500 pound animal would have crushed anything under it.
10:36After the attack, Dr. Alex shot a second tranquilizer dart into the rhino to slow him down.
10:44We lassoed his leg and guided him to a safe position on the ground.
10:49From there, the team went to work.
10:51Removing his faulty tracking collar and replacing it with a brand new one.
10:55Then we administered the immunizations he was due for.
10:58And collected a blood sample to check his overall health.
11:06It's okay, bud.
11:08Talking with Tommy and the people here, it's not about the experience of getting to do this hunt.
11:12It's about the experience of protecting the rhino.
11:14You know, people here are emotional about this.
11:16Thank you for the support and we appreciate it.
11:19Without guys like you, this animal will probably die.
11:25Right, right.
11:26Well, if it wasn't for people like you that cared so much and actually do everything they can to try and help the rhino.
11:30It's beautiful, man.
11:31Thanks for having me.
11:32Thanks.

12:02In South Africa, our work began deep in the bush.
12:06Tracking, darting, and helping a white rhino in need.
12:10Now, our mission shifts to the edge of the continent.
12:13Where the land gives way to the vast Indian Ocean.
12:16We are on the shores of St. Lucia.
12:19Joined by Tommy's friend Jeff to tag reef fish for critical scientific research.
12:25Most people picture Africa's wildlife as hippos, giraffes, and elephants.
12:30But here, the coastline tells a different story.
12:33Towering dunes roll into powerful surf.
12:37Mile after mile of untouched beach stretches without a footprint in sight.
12:43This, too, is wild Africa.
12:46And its every bit is untamed.
12:56I don't know what's biting out there.
12:58So, generally I have a little bit of everything.
13:00I have little baby squids.
13:01I have prawn.
13:02I have a mackerel.
13:04I have a little sardine called a red eye.
13:09I have a different type of prawn, a white prawn.
13:12And so, with that mixture, hopefully we get lucky with something.
13:16This weight here, he attaches it with this little clip to the bait to get everything catapulting out together.
13:22Then once this rests, it kind of detaches over time.
13:25This sits on the bottom.
13:27And then this is kind of a little bit about a foot off the bottom there.
13:30And just waving around in the waves.
13:32And the foam helps it float.
13:33And everything eats squid.
13:35Everything.
13:36Everything.
13:37I'm ready.
13:38Let's do it.
13:39At low tide, the reef that we're targeting sits about 75 yards from shore.
13:43So you've really got to launch your cast.
13:46Then, it's all about watching the rod tip and feeling for tugs.
13:50Almost immediately, I feel bites.
13:57Yes, it's on, on.
13:59I think it's a small fish, but I think you're on.
14:01Yeah, but we got him.
14:03There were so many little taps that I didn't know.
14:06This is a really powerful rod.
14:08So I just don't know how big the fish is.
14:12Because it may feel small, even though it's bigger because of the big rod.
14:15But it doesn't feel huge, but it's cool to hook up so fast.
14:20Oh, my word.
14:21There's a special fish.
14:22Snapper, right?
14:23That's him.
14:24That's the one.
14:25That's the one we're looking for.
14:26But we want his grandfather.
14:27That's a snapper.
14:29This is one of my favorite fish to eat anywhere in the world.
14:32Snapper means good-eaten fish.
14:34They're a reef fish.
14:35You can spot them right away.
14:37I mean, this shape, the face, everything looks like a snapper.
14:39But those are great eating.
14:42This is an exclusive Greenway Outdoors driven to the catch.

16:02We are in St. Lucia, South Africa.
16:13Casting into the Indian Ocean and hooking reef fish right from shore.
16:17It's struck very well.
16:19He's got the good head shakes going.
16:22Yeah.
16:23This is a three-spotted papanu.
16:26So he's got these spots along the side here.
16:28Very literal name.
16:47So this fish right here is a fish that we're going to tag for the program for conservation.
16:53It's absolutely gorgeous.
16:54Looks like it's got blue speckles all over the back.
16:56And are we ready to do it?
16:57Yeah.
16:57So it's basically from the head to the fork length.
17:01So 48 centimeters.
17:03Okay.
17:04Now I'm going to just pick a spot.
17:06Take out one scale.
17:08And then it goes.
17:09Boom.
17:09This tag number is the tag on the tag on the fish.
17:14And then I'll write down all the details now.
17:16Where it was caught.
17:17I'll actually GPS the coordinates.
17:19And then give them the GPS coordinates of that fish.
17:22And it'll go into a database.
17:24And hopefully somebody catches it again.
17:26And then what will that tell them if they catch it?
17:28How big it's got.
17:29How far it's moved.
17:30Et cetera, et cetera.
17:31The sad part is there are people that don't give the data back again.
17:35They'll take the fish.
17:36Even if they kill the fish, we want them to just send us the tag information.
17:40Yeah.
17:40So they can remove it off the database.
17:42And they just go.
17:43It's killed.
17:44A program in the United States, especially in my home state of Michigan, is like you're
17:47supposed to report how many geese you've harvested, how many ducks you've harvested.
17:50That information helps our Department of Natural Resources.
17:53This program helps them know how much the fish is grown and learn their tendencies so that
17:58we can learn about conservation.
18:00Absolutely.
18:00And especially with those reefs fish because they tend to be residential.
18:04But if you do get odd one, that'll move 30, 40 kilometers.
18:08Yeah.
18:09Amazing.
18:10Yeah.
18:10And they'll bring the old joint.
18:12Yeah.
18:13Maybe somewhere like Jeff.
18:15Yeah.
18:15Exactly.
18:16Exactly.
18:16That Jeff.
18:17At its core, this episode has been about one thing.
18:23Protecting what matters.
18:25For us, that meant helping a white rhino in the bush and targeting reef fish in the Indian
18:30Ocean.
18:31Conservation isn't just about the animals.
18:34It's about the people, the communities, and the future tied to them.
18:38The meat we harvested on this trip fed hungry families.
18:41The money we spent helped support local economies.
18:44And the science we contributed to gave the researchers new tools to further conservation.
18:49In the book of Proverbs, the Bible says that the righteous care for the needs of their animals.
18:54This verse is more than a command.
18:57It's a reminder that God entrusted us with his creation.
19:01Here in Africa, that means stepping in when people and nature both need a hand.
19:06Protecting wildlife while strengthening the communities around it.
19:10Out here, that truth has never seemed so important.
19:14This is conservation.
