00:00:01Subterranean chambers, rumored to house profound knowledge,
00:00:06and enduring tales of an extraordinary civilization
00:00:10concealed within the Earth.
00:00:15For nearly two decades, ancient aliens
00:00:18has traveled the globe exploring towering megalithic
00:00:21structures, mysterious artifacts, and stories
00:00:26of otherworldly beings in a quest for evidence
00:00:29that might reveal the truth of our extraterrestrial origins.
00:00:34Our ancestors have always said as above, so below.
00:00:39Now, we take a look back through the ancient aliens archives
00:00:44to the show's very origins to examine the evidence
00:00:48that we are not alone.
00:00:51We have never been alone.
00:00:56We live on a truly fascinating planet.
00:01:04I mean, anywhere you go, you find ancient sites and artifacts,
00:01:07some of which are still very mysterious to this day.
00:01:11But what really blows my mind is how much of it
00:01:14is still hidden underground.
00:01:17And we're finding more all the time,
00:01:20like massive underground tunnels and entire subterranean cities.
00:01:25There's even a tomb in China that had rivers of mercury.
00:01:28Right.
00:01:29Oh, yeah.
00:01:30It's incredible what they found underground in China.
00:01:32And I'm really glad we're starting this episode with the story
00:01:34ancient aliens covered in 2015, where these Chinese archaeologists
00:01:38discovered a labyrinth of these man-made caverns
00:01:43that just totally defy explanation.
00:01:44Zhejiang Province, China, June 1992, a local villager pumping water
00:01:56out of a pond in Phoenix Hill uncovers a man-made cavern
00:02:01with stairs, hallways, and massive 10-story tall pillars.
00:02:08The grotto is one in a series of 24 separate caverns,
00:02:16each with similar proportions, and intricately carved walls,
00:02:21floors, and ceilings.
00:02:27Nobody really knows what on earth these things are.
00:02:31There's no trace of them having been occupied,
00:02:34or being used for storage, certainly not for burials.
00:02:38There's no trace of anything like that.
00:02:40There's a Swiss author by the name of Luc Birgen,
00:02:43who was first to take this story outside of China in his book,
00:02:47China's Mysterious Cave Labyrinth.
00:02:49And what he showed me convinced me
00:02:51that some kind of advanced technology was used here.
00:02:56It's one of the most amazing things I've ever seen,
00:03:00where you enter this subterranean world that clearly
00:03:05has been hewn out of the bedrock with artificial means.
00:03:11It's almost as if there was some sort
00:03:12of artificial mechanism that was grinding and drilling
00:03:16all of the stone out.
00:03:18And this suggests the possibility that they may
00:03:21have had some sort of technology.
00:03:26Archaeologists estimate that the material excavated
00:03:29from the site would amount to nearly 1 million cubic meters,
00:03:34approximately the volume of 400 Olympic-sized pools.
00:03:40Yet there is no evidence of where this material would have gone.
00:03:44And Chinese officials have calculated that an endeavor
00:03:47of this magnitude would take a minimum of 1,000 men
00:03:51working day and night for at least five years.
00:03:56There is no historical record of these caverns
00:04:01having been excavated.
00:04:02So there's no document explaining
00:04:04what they were used for, who excavated them.
00:04:07And this remains a very, very frustrating detail for historians.
00:04:11We know that in China there are written records
00:04:15that go back at least 3,000 years.
00:04:19They make absolutely no mention of these caves,
00:04:23so we must look much further back in time for their origin.
00:04:29But exactly how old are they?
00:04:32Are they 4,000 years, 5,000 years?
00:04:36Are they even 10,000 years?
00:04:38We just don't know at this time.
00:04:40Some have suggested that they're up to 15,000 years old.
00:04:45In fact, Chinese scholars are the ones who have proposed
00:04:50that this cave system dates back to one of China's first emperors,
00:04:55Wang Di, and Wang Di, as we all know, descended from the sky
00:05:00in nothing else but a fiery dragon.
00:05:05Somebody went to an extreme amount of trouble
00:05:08to build an underground civilization.
00:05:11Why would they do that?
00:05:14Is it possible that something was happening
00:05:16on the surface of the Earth?
00:05:19When we go back to the Icelandic legends,
00:05:22we see this cataclysm that is described as a cataclysm of fire
00:05:26called the Ragnarok, in which you have flames in the air
00:05:30and rocks and gravel raining down from the sky.
00:05:35In the Icelandic Ragnarok legend,
00:05:38the world is turned upside down.
00:05:43A great fire is followed by a submersion of the world in water,
00:05:47resulting in the death of the Nordic gods and their offspring.
00:05:53Only two humans are left to repopulate the Earth.
00:05:58It is a tale much like that of the great flood
00:06:01found in the Judeo-Christian Bible.
00:06:04And similar stories of a great deluge,
00:06:07one that marks the end of an old world and the start of a new one,
00:06:11can be found in the histories of virtually
00:06:13every ancient civilization on our planet.
00:06:19Virtually every culture, every ancient culture,
00:06:21talks about floods and ancient floods.
00:06:25Some people dismiss this as, you know,
00:06:27myth without explanation.
00:06:30But what we find geologically is, in fact,
00:06:33we would expect flood legends.
00:06:38In 2007, a consortium of geologists
00:06:42publishes its collective findings,
00:06:44indicating evidence of a major meteor event.
00:06:49What they discover is a carbon-rich layer
00:06:52in the geological record at various sites across the globe,
00:06:57dating back to around 10,900 BC.
00:07:02A separate study conducted by scientists studying Arctic ice
00:07:07core samples finds evidence suggesting a rapid glacial melt
00:07:11at nearly the same time period.
00:07:15The ice age ends very, very dramatically,
00:07:19almost literally overnight.
00:07:21You see this in the ice cores.
00:07:23All of a sudden, there are dramatic changes, temperatures rising,
00:07:28torrential rains, flooding.
00:07:33Could the geological record suggest that the stories
00:07:37of a global cataclysm are true?
00:07:42If so, might the stories of a cleansing of the Earth
00:07:46of otherworldly beings, leaving only humans
00:07:50to repopulate the planet, also be true?
00:07:55Ancient astronaut theorists say yes,
00:07:58and suggest further evidence may be found
00:08:01by exploring another mysterious underground city
00:08:05located nearly 300 feet beneath the Earth.
00:08:12You can't have a conversation about underground structures
00:08:14without mentioning Derinkuyu in Turkey.
00:08:16It's got to be one of the most incredible places on this Earth.
00:08:20Yeah, Derinkuyu is an entire city deep underground.
00:08:24And it's anyone's guess how old it is,
00:08:26but it goes back at least 3,000 years.
00:08:29Oh, and we've proposed it's even older than that
00:08:31because it's only about 300 miles from Gobekli Tepe,
00:08:35and there we know it dates back 12,000 years.
00:08:39We covered that place in season two of Ancient Aliens,
00:08:43and it's one of those sites that just blows you away.
00:08:45Absolutely.
00:08:47Bordered on the north by the Black Sea
00:08:53and by the Taurus Mountains to the south,
00:08:57lies Cappadocia in central Turkey.
00:09:01Here, wind and water have sculpted strange shapes
00:09:04out of the soft volcanic rock,
00:09:07rock which ancient peoples once turned
00:09:10into small primitive dwellings.
00:09:14In more recent years, the site has seen the construction
00:09:17of more modern structures.
00:09:22But in 1963, a simple home renovation
00:09:26in the town of Derinkuyu led to an extraordinary discovery
00:09:30when a cave wall was opened,
00:09:33revealing a passageway to an underground city
00:09:37thousands of years old and more than 280 feet deep.
00:09:42I've been there on multiple occasions,
00:09:45and it's incredible because there's 13 stories
00:09:49that go deep into the ground with ventilation shafts
00:09:53and 15,000 little shafts that bring air
00:09:57to even the deepest of levels.
00:10:00Incredibly, the number of rock rooms that were found
00:10:06could hold over 20,000 men, women, and children.
00:10:11There was even evidence of religious centers,
00:10:14storerooms, wine presses, and stables for livestock.
00:10:21Oh, Derinkuyu would have been a massive undertaking
00:10:24for anyone, even in modern times,
00:10:26with modern equipment.
00:10:28But in those days, it would have been stupendous,
00:10:33equal to the pyramids.
00:10:36At Derinkuyu, because of the softness of the stone,
00:10:40you had to be very careful that you provided enough pillar
00:10:44strength to support the floors above.
00:10:47Otherwise, you'd have catastrophic cave-ins.
00:10:49Surprisingly, there's no evidence of any catastrophic cave-ins,
00:10:53so they were apparently extremely clever and knew their material.
00:10:58We're talking deep antiquity.
00:11:00It is mind-boggling to understand how they could have done this.
00:11:04Perhaps they had help from some other civilization.
00:11:09But just who built this massive underground city?
00:11:13And what mysterious force drove them to live underground?
00:11:18Why would people want to live deep underground
00:11:22in these weird caverns like that?
00:11:25It seems kind of scary, really.
00:11:30According to many archaeologists and scholars,
00:11:34Derinkuyu was most likely intended to serve
00:11:37as a temporary shelter from invasion,
00:11:40built around 800 BC by the Phrygians,
00:11:44a Bronze Age people related to the Trojans.
00:11:48Others believe it was built by the Hittites,
00:11:50a warrior people mentioned in the Bible,
00:11:53who flourished hundreds of years earlier.
00:11:56But could the underground city be even older?
00:11:59According to ancient astronaut theorists, it is.
00:12:04Perhaps by many thousands of years.
00:12:08The Cappadocia region of Turkey was part of the Zoroastrian Empire,
00:12:12which was Persian in nature.
00:12:15And it's one of the oldest religious traditions on the face of the earth.
00:12:21The Zoroastrian religion,
00:12:23an ancient faith based on opposing forces of good and evil,
00:12:28is widely believed to have influenced both Hinduism and Judeo-Christianity.
00:12:35Founded sometime before the 6th century BC,
00:12:38its chief god is the creator, Ahura Mazda.
00:12:43And in the second chapter of the Zoroastrian sacred text, the Vendidad,
00:12:48Ahura Mazda saves mankind from a worldwide environmental disaster.
00:12:54Much like the story of Noah in the Hebrew Testament.
00:12:58The great prophet Yima,
00:12:59he was instructed to build a kind of underground refuge,
00:13:04similar to Durinkuyu by the sky god, Ahura Mazda.
00:13:09According to the sacred texts,
00:13:14Yima built a multi-level underground city to protect a select group of people and animals.
00:13:21Not from a flood, but from a global ice age.
00:13:25The Vendidad calls this the evil winters.
00:13:30According to many mainstream climatologists,
00:13:33the last ice age peaked around 18,000 years ago,
00:13:37and ended around 10,000 BC.
00:13:41Is it possible that Durinkuyu was built as a refuge from a devastating global winter?
00:13:51Since you cannot carbon date stone,
00:13:53it's anybody's guess how old Durinkuyu really is.
00:13:58And my question is, if we have a Zoroastrian story that's very similar,
00:14:04could it be that both that place and Durinkuyu are much, much older than what we've believed so far?
00:14:15But if Durinkuyu is, in fact, the underground city that Ahura Mazda told his followers to build,
00:14:22could there be a stunning truth behind the legend?
00:14:25If so, who or what was the god Ahura Mazda?
00:14:31Ahura Mazda does appear to be responsible for the management of whatever is happening here on Earth.
00:14:37There are various ways to read this, one of which is that it does represent some sort of higher,
00:14:44universal form of consciousness, but another is that it would represent an overseeing extraterrestrial intelligence.
00:14:51Several sacred texts from antiquity speak of knowledge given to mankind from extraterrestrials,
00:15:02but also known as gods from antiquity.
00:15:05Could the sky god Ahura Mazda really have been an advanced being from another world?
00:15:11If so, did he provide the technology needed for his followers to build this complex labyrinth
00:15:18as protection from environmental disaster?
00:15:22Or is there possibly a more ominous reason for Durinkuyu's existence?
00:15:31Some say a clue lies in the underground city's unusual security system.
00:15:361,000-pound doors on rollers that allow them to be moved by a single person, but only from one side.
00:15:44The Durinkuyu doors, they're very cleverly constructed.
00:15:48You can basically only open it and leverage it from the inside.
00:15:53So obviously, whoever inhabited Durinkuyu was hiding from someone or something.
00:16:02According to the ancient Zoroastrian texts,
00:16:05Ahura Mazda soared through the sky in a divine chariot
00:16:10and waged war against his eternal enemy,
00:16:13Angra Mainyu, the demon of destruction.
00:16:17But could this really be, as many ancient astronaut theorists believe,
00:16:21a depiction of two extraterrestrial forces battling over control of the earth and its resources?
00:16:29The aerial enemies were extraterrestrials,
00:16:32because they were the ones who had the capability of flight.
00:16:37They had access to those types of machines that we can read about in every single ancient culture around the world.
00:16:48When you look at the Zoroastrian tradition, you also see clear evidence that there was some sort of
00:16:53extraterrestrial battle going on between warring factions.
00:16:59Therefore, it is certainly possible that the original caves may have been used as shelters
00:17:05against possible aerial bombardment from extraterrestrials that were warring with each other during that time.
00:17:11Derenkuyu was built out of fear of an aerial enemy.
00:17:18Because if something flies over you very, very fast, you can't see the ventilation shafts.
00:17:24Some suggest 30,000 people used to live underground at Derenkuyu.
00:17:33During recorded history, many different peoples did, in fact, hide in the underground city of Derenkuyu
00:17:40to escape everything from desert raiders to Roman legions.
00:17:44But some experts wonder whether such conventional attacks can really explain why Derenkuyu was built in the first place.
00:17:53If it were an enemy that was on horseback, it would be easy for them to just smother
00:18:01everyone inside by just closing all the ventilation shafts.
00:18:05We had the phrase in Defense Department studies that I participated in, that a cave is a grave
00:18:12to a well-prepared adversary. Once you find it, it is highly vulnerable.
00:18:20But did the people of Derenkuyu really go underground to avoid becoming casualties in an
00:18:25extraterrestrial battle in the skies? And if so, might there be other such cities from the distant past?
00:18:33According to ancient astronaut theorists, there are. And they can be found much nearer to home,
00:18:43deep in the caves of the American Southwest.
00:18:56The majestic mesas and rugged mountains of the American Southwest are home to many native peoples.
00:19:04including the Navajo, Zuni, Pueblo, Hopi, and Apache.
00:19:15These tribes have many different beliefs, but their creation myths all share something quite remarkable.
00:19:22We're talking about our origin, and you know, you hear the stories about us coming down from Alaska
00:19:30to the Bering Strait. But what we believe is we came out from the ground.
00:19:34The Apaches and other Pueblo Indians, such as the Zunis and the Hopi Indians, all have
00:19:43this legend that they emerged from some underground world into today's world.
00:19:51In some legends, the Southwestern peoples went back underground for safety.
00:20:01The Hopi of Arizona say their ancestors escaped a deadly storm of falling stars
00:20:13with the help of the snake people, who took them to shelters deep in the earth.
00:20:18Another Hopi legend speaks of the ant people, who protected them from storms of fire and ice.
00:20:29The Hopi Indians survived cataclysms by living in this underground world with the ant people
00:20:38for a certain period of time. And then eventually, they emerged from the underground world
00:20:44back into the surface world.
00:20:48And people. Snake people. Could these stories be based on ancestral tales of people actually living
00:20:58underground, possibly during the last ice age? Or could the ancestors of today's Southwestern tribes
00:21:06have taken refuge in subsurface dwellings similar to the underground city of Derinkuyu in Turkey?
00:21:14If so, over the centuries, might they have developed physical traits, like large eyes and fingers,
00:21:22that made them more closely resemble actual earth-dwelling creatures?
00:21:28The shamans and the elders of Native Americans, they will tell you that before these people were
00:21:35able to emerge out of planet earth, they were brought here by the star people, the star gods,
00:21:44which arrived from outer space.
00:21:49I have stood in front of what are called the ant people and some of the very strange large-eyed
00:21:56drawings on the rocks and wondered, am I looking at Native American interpretation of what today
00:22:05is called an extraterrestrial biological entity?
00:22:13If extraterrestrials were here in the remote past, there are multiple species out there,
00:22:19is it possible that they might have looked lizard-like and ant-like? And the answer is yes.
00:22:29Is it possible that these underground creatures of Native American legend were actually alien visitors?
00:22:36If so, could some of them still be living beneath the surface of the southwestern desert?
00:22:46For decades, stories of encounters with UFOs and alien beings have been told among the people
00:22:53of New Mexico's Hickorya Apache Reservation. Some of the aliens in these stories bear a strange resemblance to the ancient
00:23:03tales of the ant-like and snake-like beings from the Hopi legends.
00:23:09There is things up here that no one can explain.
00:23:13The Hickorya Apache Reservation is located next to the small town of Dulce,
00:23:21nestled in the shadow of the over 9,000-foot-high Archuleta Mesa.
00:23:27It is from this mesa and mountain that people claim they have seen UFOs flying out of the mountain.
00:23:36It was a spaceship we saw right there. And it was big, like maybe the size of a football field.
00:23:50And then we seen this dome on top that was all blasting. And then that my husband was looking at
00:23:57it with the binoculars and he saw two small people. Well, we don't know what it is if we stayed here and
00:24:06they came down. I don't know what they would have done to us.
00:24:14Could the native tales of spaceships and strange creatures be true? Some UFO
00:24:20researchers and conspiracy theorists believe that these eyewitness accounts are not only true,
00:24:27but are evidence of a secret collaboration between underground aliens and the U.S. military.
00:24:33The amount of military traffic over Dulce, the unmarked helicopters, the black helicopters,
00:24:40the heavy-duty Chinooks, all these helicopters spend a lot more time in Dulce than they should
00:24:47if nothing were going on here. Among the stories that we've heard from the Hickory Apache is that they
00:24:56discovered vents actually right here on the Mesa. A while back, when my brother was still alive,
00:25:06we used to come up here in the back and he showed us this shaft and that thing was bigger than, bigger
00:25:11than me. But we walked in and I didn't want to go any further. The vents were here maybe 25 years ago. You'd hear
00:25:21strange noises, groans, sighs, human groans. And this led a lot of credence to stories that human beings
00:25:33were being vivisected, experimented on. And thus the legend of strange creatures and strange noises coming
00:25:42out of this Mesa grew and expanded. Aliens living underground? Strange secret government cover-ups?
00:25:55Could Native American legends of underground beings help unearth the truth behind these incredible stories?
00:26:04Perhaps additional clues can be found by analyzing ancient cave art depicting curious humanoid figures.
00:26:12In almost every ancient culture, there are stories of beings coming down from the sky.
00:26:21But there are also stories of beings living beneath the Earth. Right. There really are. In the Native
00:26:26American tradition, we learn about the snake people, the ant people. Then there's this cave art that shows
00:26:32these humanoid figures with these really strange looking bodies. Yeah, and some of these figures that you're
00:26:38talking about can be found in the Grand Canyon. In fact, we covered them in a 2014 episode of Ancient Aliens called
00:26:46Forbidden Caves.
00:26:47Santa Monica, California, 2014. Here at X-Res Studio, visualization artists Greg Downing and Eric Hansen
00:27:03are pioneering the use of photogrammetry and special effects software to assist archaeologists in the global
00:27:10effort to decipher ancient cave art. We use a combination of techniques from the fields of
00:27:20computational photography and graphics in order to help the archaeologists reveal information difficult
00:27:26to see just with basic vision when you're there. The team recently traveled to the Grand Canyon
00:27:32to compile a massive, in-depth, photographic compilation of the collection of strange petroglyphs known
00:27:39as the Shaman's Panel. We were drawn to the panel for two primary aspects. One was the rich layering
00:27:46of the anthropomorphic figures, and two is the kind of evocative, surreal nature of their composition.
00:27:55This cave is maybe like five or six feet deep, so by using a photogrammetric technique,
00:28:01we'll be able to get the detail across the entire painting.
00:28:07The nice thing about this technique is we can separate the different dyes and minerals that are
00:28:12used, and in this case now we can kind of see the layering expressed. We can see figures that are simply
00:28:19lost by the naked eye. Yeah, that brings it out. Yeah, that's a complete difference.
00:28:31Could modern techniques one day uncover even more details about what ancient people really saw and
00:28:42hope to communicate with rock art? Some ancient astronaut theorists believe one compelling clue
00:28:50that modern researchers might be on the right track can be found, oddly enough, in contemporary America.
00:29:02March 1945. Amazing Stories magazine publishes an article entitled, I Remember La Maria.
00:29:10But according to the author, this is the first piece to appear in the science fiction magazine
00:29:17that is not fiction at all, but an actual account of his own alien abduction.
00:29:27Richard Shaver was a man who surfaced decades ago with a story of underground entities that were very
00:29:34hostile to the human race. Terrible creatures that would kidnap and kill members of the human race.
00:29:42They were the first inhabitants of planet Earth. When the sun became radioactive,
00:29:48these people could no longer live on the surface. Some left in their spaceships, others went underground.
00:29:56Could Richard Shaver's account of underground extraterrestrials abducting humans be true?
00:30:10Shaver proposed that the alien race that once populated the Earth had developed highly specialized
00:30:16equipment that allowed them to embed multifaceted imagery into stones.
00:30:21Richard Shaver believed that he had made the greatest discovery in the history of mankind about the true
00:30:30nature of intelligent life on Earth.
00:30:37So this is an original Shaver photograph of a rock book. And this multidimensional way of making images
00:30:46in the rock books was something that Shaver saw as a real sign of the superior intelligence of the ancient races.
00:30:55And Shaver believed that these weren't mere rocks with random patterns, that these were actually
00:31:01deliberately manufactured artifacts by the ancient races who had been here 30,000, 100,000, who knows how many years ago.
00:31:11Might Richard Shaver have actually discovered real physical evidence that extraterrestrials have been here on planet Earth,
00:31:21and might still be here today?
00:31:25Whether or not Richard Shaver's stories are true, it does dovetail with legends across this planet,
00:31:32of a race of beings that either created humankind or were at least our ancestors that had a superior technology.
00:31:44If we're looking for extraterrestrials, ironically, the heavens above might not be the best place to look.
00:31:51We should perhaps even be looking deep below our feet.
00:31:54In some ways, exploring the underground cavern world of planet Earth is the final frontier.
00:32:02Is it possible that some of the world's most mysterious caves really are home to extraterrestrial beings?
00:32:14Could it be that the knowledge of the universe has been left for us to discover right here on Earth,
00:32:21once we have the technology to unlock it?
00:32:24Perhaps we will find proof by searching deep underground.
00:32:32The Los Angeles Times publishes an article entitled Lizard People's Catacomb City Hunted,
00:32:51accounting the attempt by mining engineer G. Warren Shufeld to locate and excavate a maze of tunnels,
00:32:58which he believed were beneath the streets of downtown Los Angeles.
00:33:04Warren Shufeld was a mining engineer and he invented a device that he called the radio x-ray
00:33:13to be used for gold mining and this device could find tunnels underground.
00:33:19And he actually created a map of the tunnels.
00:33:22Included on Shufeld's map of tunnels were 16 places where he said he had located gold deposits.
00:33:35Shufeld gained momentum after meeting with a Hopi medicine man who told him the legend of the lizard
00:33:41people that live in underground cities.
00:33:43Warren Shufeld had a sit down with an Indian medicine man in Arizona who told him there was a
00:33:51Hopi legend that there was three cities on the Pacific coast that were completely underground.
00:33:59The story goes that 5000 years ago there was a meteor shower and these lizard people sought refuge underground.
00:34:08They dug these tunnels and one of the network of tunnels was under the city of Los Angeles.
00:34:17According to the legend, the lizard people carved out vast chambers large enough to house a thousand families.
00:34:25Using advanced technologies such as a mysterious chemical that could easily bore through bedrock.
00:34:32Shufeld obtained permission from the city and began digging to try and reach the vast tunnel system.
00:34:41The city council, perhaps motivated by the alleged gold that was contained within the tunnels,
00:34:47allowed Shufeld to dig a 250-foot shaft under the agreement that he would give them 50 percent of the treasure if recovered.
00:34:56Warren Shufeld was a successful mining engineer and it seems that he had some kind of connection at the Los Angeles Times because the Times really followed the story.
00:35:08It was a story that caught the popular imagination.
00:35:13After a month of digging and not reaching the tunnel system,
00:35:17Warren Shufeld and his team ran out of money and stopped the search.
00:35:21But fascination with the story continues to this day.
00:35:28So now we have these stories of underground people, a race living underground in tunnels and bases.
00:35:36You have to wonder, is this some kind of reptilian extraterrestrials who have taken control of our planet and are living underground?
00:35:47It seems incredible and yet it's what some of the stories are telling us.
00:35:51Is it possible that an advanced race of lizard people once lived underneath the western United States?
00:36:02And could they still be there today?
00:36:06Astonishingly, a nearly identical legend exists halfway around the world.
00:36:15Banaras, India
00:36:16Within this city lies the well of Sheshna.
00:36:26Which in Hindu legend is an entrance into an underground city of the Nagas.
00:36:33A race of semi-divine serpent people known throughout eastern culture.
00:36:37In Banaras, the sacred city of India, there is a well, the well of Sheshna.
00:36:44This is one of the portals to the underground city called Patala.
00:36:48And the Nagas live in this place.
00:36:51It's a place of great power and mystery and some danger.
00:36:55And only the holy can make contact with it.
00:37:01Patala is the underworld in Hindu mythology.
00:37:05There are many beings that live in there.
00:37:09Many reptilians which are called Nagas.
00:37:11As a demigod, they must have descended from heaven to the earth to teach,
00:37:16to give special qualities to the human world.
00:37:19Nagas are not really evil of being as in a Judeo-Christian context.
00:37:27Ancient astronaut theorists claim the Hindu stories of the Nagas bear a striking resemblance
00:37:33to the Hopi stories of lizard people, who also resided beneath the earth.
00:37:39So here we are linking the Naga, the serpent beings, with the reptilian beings of the Hopi tradition.
00:37:46We see a common thread here of these beings who are at one time reviled and also revered,
00:37:53but also as beings that have a direct influence on humanity.
00:37:59Is it merely coincidence that extremely similar legends
00:38:03of advanced reptilian beings living underground can be found on opposite sides of the world?
00:38:10And is it possible these reptilian underground dwellers
00:38:15surface every so often to interact with humanity?
00:38:22Perhaps more clues can be found in artifacts unearthed in the cradle of civilization.
00:38:28Southern Iraq, 1923.
00:38:35British archaeologist Sir Leonard Woolley leads an excavation to uncover the remains of one of the
00:38:41oldest agricultural communities in the world, the Ubaid culture, which dates back to 5900 BC.
00:38:52Among the remains they discover some unusual clay artifacts.
00:38:56And among the dwellings and tools they also discovered these strange looking clay figurines.
00:39:03And I say strange because they don't really look human.
00:39:07They have the facial features of what seems to be reptiles.
00:39:13Now is it possible that the Sumerians were depicting a race of beings that were living among them at the time?
00:39:21Mainstream scholars have debated the meaning of the statues since their discovery,
00:39:30thinking perhaps they were Sumerian gods.
00:39:35However, ancient astronaut theorists believe the statues could have a different meaning.
00:39:41These clay figurines have these what are called coffee bean eyes. They have these elongated skulls.
00:39:49They look very much like some kind of reptilian extraterrestrial.
00:39:54And they're breastfeeding children and doing very normal human things that you wouldn't think
00:40:01that gods would necessarily be doing. So it's this mixture of human activity with these reptilian aliens.
00:40:14So we're showing mammalian reptilian physiology.
00:40:18When it shows them holding those babies, it's not a normal thing to have anywhere in iconography
00:40:26throughout the entire world. And it makes you suspect as to whether or not they had actual physical
00:40:32contacts between them. Could it be that legends and artifacts left behind by ancient societies
00:40:40offer insight into a subterranean realm and the beings that inhabit it? A reality that has since been concealed
00:40:50from mankind? According to ancient astronaut theorists, the answer is a resounding yes.
00:40:57And additional evidence could lie buried deep beneath the Giza plateau.
00:41:03One of my favorite places on earth is Egypt. And what's crazy is that when you go there today,
00:41:12you see the pyramids and temples and monuments on the surface. But Egyptologists estimate that as much
00:41:17as two thirds of what the ancient Egyptians built is still beneath the sands. Yeah, and they're making
00:41:23more discoveries like this almost every day. And one of the most enduring mysteries is what's underneath
00:41:30the Sphinx. Yes. And the famous psychic Edgar Cayce said that there was a secret chamber beneath the
00:41:36Sphinx in the 1930s. And new evidence shows that there is one. Right. And we covered this in season
00:41:42three of Ancient Aliens.
00:41:471936, the Giza plateau, Egypt. For more than 3,000 years, the body of the Great Sphinx had been buried beneath
00:42:02the sand. But after 11 years of work, Egyptian archaeologists uncovered the entire monument for the
00:42:10first time since antiquity. At 241 feet long and 66 feet high, it is the largest and oldest monolithic statue in the world.
00:42:27Even more incredible is its shape. The Sphinx has the head of a man and the body of a lion.
00:42:35Although Egyptologists date the construction of the Great Sphinx to the reign of the Pharaoh Khafra in
00:42:43approximately 2500 BC, others claim its construction could be much, much older.
00:42:55The Orthodox date of about 2500 BC tagged on these monuments has been challenged by a group of researchers,
00:43:04including myself, who have argued that the erosion of the Sphinx suggests a much, much older Sphinx.
00:43:19Although Egyptologists have found no agreement as to when or why this strange monument was built,
00:43:26ancient astronaut theorists believe it may offer proof of extraterrestrials being present in ancient Egypt.
00:43:34We see in many ancient Sumerian and Egyptian inscriptions of Sphinxes, half man,
00:43:48half animal of some kind, and a variance to a degree of different combinations of animals and human
00:43:54beings. We have to wonder why would they be doing this? And logically, it starts to make more sense when we
00:44:00realize a lot of these ancient texts explain that extraterrestrials came here and created us in
00:44:06their image and after their likeness. If you believe the work of the late Zechariah Sitchin,
00:44:14where he believes that the Anunnaki came from a planet that is somewhere out in our solar system
00:44:20and that they came here to mine for gold, but they figured they're not going to do the work themselves.
00:44:25So they decided to take what creatures were on this planet at the time, genetically alter them,
00:44:32and make mankind. And if that's the case, it's very possible that they could be using genetic
00:44:38alterations to experiment with not only just humanity, but a mixing of other species with humanity.
00:44:44Could the Great Sphinx be evidence of genetic engineering by ancient aliens? And if,
00:44:55as Zechariah Sitchin proposed, extraterrestrials were genetically altering humans and animals for
00:45:02the purpose of mining gold, might this enormous structure have at one point been a repository for
00:45:10that gold. Is it possible that when Egyptian archaeologists began excavating the Great Sphinx,
00:45:21what they were really searching for was gold?
00:45:28Over the centuries, secret chambers, shafts, and elaborate tunnel systems have indeed been discovered
00:45:35all around the Giza Plateau. A shaft was discovered called the Osirian shaft, which led under the Giza
00:45:42Plateau behind the Sphinx. Now in that shaft are various passageways that lead seemingly nowhere.
00:45:49In recent years, ground penetrating radar, or GPR scans, have been conducted which reveal evidence of
00:45:57numerous underground cavities located not only around the Sphinx, but underneath it as well.
00:46:06From a scientific point of view, I'm not talking about speculation and theories and legends and so
00:46:11forth. That was the very first time that some strong indication that there might be these hidden tunnels
00:46:18and chambers under the Sphinx. And according to this, they found very, very strong evidence of what looked like
00:46:26artificial chambers. It is not a question as to whether or not there is a secret underground passage
00:46:34underneath the Giza Plateau. The question is, can we get access to this? And of course, the all-important
00:46:39question is, is there something there of extraordinary value? Maybe even something which defies science,
00:46:45which might even be of an extraterrestrial nature.
00:46:56If the alleged cavities under the Sphinx contain not only gold, but gold mined by ancient alien beings,
00:47:05might they also contain something more than just material treasure?
00:47:09Ancient astronaut theorists believe an elaborate secret repository is located under the Sphinx's paws,
00:47:21known as the Hall of Records. It dates back to the fall of Atlantis, which according to ancient texts,
00:47:30is said to have occurred nearly 12,000 years ago.
00:47:33They also claim that there were extraterrestrials living in Atlantis,
00:47:40and that they needed a repository to house all of their accumulated knowledge.
00:47:47The Hall of Records, it was made by us, but with the tools and the knowledge of extraterrestrials.
00:47:53It is speculated that a group of survivors of Atlantis came to Egypt at about 10,500 BC,
00:48:01brought along with them their records, their knowledge, and built this storeroom somewhere at Giza.
00:48:14If archaeologists do someday unearth secret chambers below the Sphinx, what will they find?
00:48:22Gold? A library of ancient extraterrestrial knowledge?
00:48:27You know, ancient Egypt isn't the only place that is rumored to have a Hall of Records.
00:48:40There are rumors that there are underground repositories of knowledge all over the world.
00:48:45And in fact, I've been to one, Giorgio's basement.
00:48:48Look, I live in California, David. We don't have basements.
00:48:53Okay, maybe Eric Van Daniken's basement.
00:48:56Well, he actually was one of the first ones to write about this rumored Hall of Records in Ecuador.
00:49:02And we covered this in Season 2 of Ancient Aliens.
00:49:05South America.
00:49:13The Andes mountain range in Ecuador.
00:49:18For thousands of years, this rainforest high on the eastern slopes has been the land of the Shuar.
00:49:27Headhunters who are fiercely protective of their homeland and its secrets.
00:49:32And of all the Shuar secrets, perhaps none has been so carefully guarded as the location and entrance of the cave of Tios.
00:49:46But why?
00:49:46Perhaps the answer can be found in the story of an Italian Catholic missionary named Father Crespi,
00:49:59who lived in the region in the middle of the last century.
00:50:03Father Paolo Carlo Crespi, he was loved by the Indians.
00:50:07He helped them without asking for money.
00:50:10And the Indians made them some presents.
00:50:12But what was unique about the presents or gifts given to Father Crespi,
00:50:19was that they often took the form of elaborately carved artifacts.
00:50:25Some made of gold or other precious metals.
00:50:29Often these objects featured elaborate carvings and symbols,
00:50:34not known to be associated with the Shuar culture.
00:50:36In his 1973 book, Gold of the Gods, ancient astronaut theorist Eric Von Daniken wrote of Father Crespi's incredible collection,
00:50:49which he believed to come from the cave of Tios, and which were, in his opinion,
00:50:54treasures from an unknown and highly advanced culture.
00:50:58The startling questions posed in Von Daniken's book soon inspired Scottish explorer Stanley Hall to try and solve the mystery himself.
00:51:12In 1975, Hall traveled to Cuenca to see Father Crespi's collection with his own eyes.
00:51:18I had for years been researching South America as the missing page of prehistory.
00:51:26I first heard of the Tios caves was in Eric Von Daniken's book, and followed it through from there.
00:51:34And one of the presents which the old priest received is a tablet with 36 writings.
00:51:41It's metallic tablet.
00:51:43No one early today was able to translate these writings.
00:51:48In 1976, Stanley Hall mounted an expedition of more than 100 people to explore Tios.
00:52:02Among them was American astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon.
00:52:12Entering the cave through a jungle entrance known to the Ecuadorian army,
00:52:18the explorers were fascinated by what they encountered,
00:52:22especially large areas that appeared to have been excavated by someone or something.
00:52:28The head of the British geological group, Dr. Brian Kelly in 1976,
00:52:40he admitted that it was difficult for him to explain the actual large doorways that you see in these caves.
00:52:48Although Stan Hall's expedition did find a tomb chamber with items dating to 1500 BC,
00:53:00a ring, a stone ring.
00:53:02The expedition found no treasure and no trace of anything that looked like the artifacts in Father
00:53:09Crespi's collection.
00:53:13But if Tios was not the secret origin of Father Crespi's amazing collection, where did it come from?
00:53:19Undaunted, Hall didn't give up his search.
00:53:2615 years later, in 1991, the explorer tracked down an Ecuadorian named Petronio Jaramillo,
00:53:34who claimed to have entered the cave of Tios through a secret entrance back in 1946.
00:53:39And apparently, Petronio had visited this cave for the very first time when he was very young, when he was in his teens.
00:53:48He said that he had to dive underwater, go in this underwater tunnel and then come up.
00:53:55Jaramillo told Hall he wandered through chamber after chamber of ancient relics,
00:54:02including a vast room of books made from gold and other metals, books with unrecognizable writing.
00:54:12Possibly like that on one of the metal tablets in Father Crespi's collection.
00:54:18So other things looked like formulas and so on and so on.
00:54:22So it was one spectacular statement after another.
00:54:28Some argue whether or not an ancient civilization had come down to earth
00:54:33and had used this cave system to leave certain artifacts of their civilization behind for us to recover.
00:54:43Unfortunately, before he could guide Stanley Hall to the underwater cave entrance,
00:54:47Petronio Jaramillo died, taking the secret to his grave.
00:54:58Stanley Hall himself died in 2008, before he was able to renew his search for the so-called metal library.
00:55:08Fortunately, Stanley Hall's daughter Eileen has decided to continue her father's work.
00:55:13Unless we find this treasure, unless we can see, translate the writing, it's still a big question mark
00:55:20over who wrote it, why they put it there, and who put it there.
00:55:25But when Eileen Hall began to look for the location of Father Crespi's original artifacts,
00:55:31she learned that much of the priest's collection had mysteriously vanished shortly after his death in 1982.
00:55:38But why had Crespi's artifacts fallen prey to thieves?
00:55:46Or might the Shuar have taken their treasure back into the cave where they found them?
00:55:52Whatever the answer, Eileen Hall has continued to research other artifacts from elsewhere in Ecuador.
00:55:59And like Father Crespi's objects, some seem to have uncanny resemblances to other cultures
00:56:07that according to mainstream archaeology, ancient Ecuadorians could not have had any knowledge of.
00:56:13This collection is made up of what my father believed to be the formative cultures of Ecuador.
00:56:22This is from the coastal culture from 600 BC to 1600 AD.
00:56:28And this is very human-like, but at the same time some features have been exaggerated.
00:56:32Here you've got the smaller face with the kind of bigger ears and the elongated skull shape in the head.
00:56:41The top of this head looks like an elongated cranium, an elongated skull.
00:56:49And it is identical to this Egyptian statue that we find all over Egypt.
00:56:56To see this picture right here and compare it to the Egyptian bust we see right here,
00:57:03it's uncanny. The head shape is identical.
00:57:11Do Stanley Hall's artifacts show evidence that Egyptian culture could have crossed the ocean to
00:57:17influence South American culture?
00:57:22Or is it possible that both were influenced by another culture?
00:57:26One from beyond our world?
00:57:31If so, were the strange writings inscribed on Father Crespi's metal tablets,
00:57:37actual messages from an alien world?
00:57:43My father went as far as saying it was possibly an advanced civilization,
00:57:47but we can't know for certain until this library is found.
00:57:50So this metallic library is still there in Ecuador in a subterranean cave.
00:58:02There are still Indian tribes living there. They are still protecting the old treasure.
00:58:11So it's going to push the boundaries of academia once this cave system has been found.
00:58:17And whether it is Inca or extraterrestrial, it doesn't really matter at this moment in time.
00:58:22Let's get to this cave and see what is in there.
00:58:27Perhaps Tayos has yet to reveal all of its secrets.
00:58:31But more than 700 miles to the north, there is another cave.
00:58:36One that may prove that the Mayan underworld and the terrifying gods who ruled it
00:58:41were not only very real, but thirsty for human blood.
00:58:54The Yucatan Peninsula.
00:58:58One of Mexico's premier tourist destinations.
00:59:01Besides scenic beaches, the area is covered by thick jungle and pockmarked by massive sinkholes known as cenotes.
00:59:15The ground beneath the jungle is also honeycombed with caves.
00:59:22But here, in 2007, Mexican archaeologist Guillermo de Anda found a cave like no other.
00:59:31It's a cave like no other.
00:59:32Following clues in the records of 17th century Spanish priests that hinted at the existence
00:59:38of a mysterious underground Mayan temple deep in the jungle.
00:59:44De Anda found a series of caves near the village of Tatsibichen.
00:59:52Caves not seen for hundreds of years.
00:59:54And with entrances submerged beneath centuries of flood water.
01:00:03Sometimes we have to dive into these caves.
01:00:06Sometimes they go very deep.
01:00:08The average of our research is about 140, 150 feet, but we know of caves much deeper than that.
01:00:18At first, De Anda and his team found carved stone heads and broken pillars with 1900-year-old Mayan inscriptions.
01:00:27We have found columns under the water.
01:00:34And these columns are amazing because some of them are five feet high and at least 10 feet wide.
01:00:41But as De Anda surfaced in the dry areas of the cave,
01:00:48he found what he believed to be the remains of a massive underground temple complex,
01:00:54including a concrete road, a crumbled pyramid, and bones.
01:00:59But why was it here?
01:01:06The Mayans themselves have a very intriguing legends of an underground world called Sibalba.
01:01:14And it's believed now by archaeologists that what they found is what the Mayans thought
01:01:21was the entrance to this legendary underground world that features prominently in the Popol Vuh.
01:01:30Could this dark and mysterious cave really be the underground world mentioned in the Mayan legends?
01:01:41According to the Popol Vuh, the written record of Mayan mythology,
01:01:45the underworld kingdom of Sibalba, meaning the place of fear, was ruled by the cruel lords of the dead,
01:01:53who made those who entered their realm pass through a series of torture chambers
01:01:58involving blood, darkness, cold, knives, bats, and jaguars.
01:02:05We see here in this one archaeological spot an actual physical representation of what the
01:02:16Mayans felt the soul had to go through.
01:02:19Might perhaps this cave of stalactites, sharp enough to pierce flesh, represent the room of knives in the Popol Vuh?
01:02:27There is also a room of bats, and a trench that might once have been filled with blood,
01:02:36like the river of blood that Mayan pilgrims had to cross over.
01:02:40There are places of cold and darkness, and even a room with the bones of jaguars.
01:02:49These caves were littered with large patches of spiders and reptiles and
01:02:54all types of tumultuous things that a human really wouldn't want to be exposed to.
01:03:00Although some archaeologists claim this unique site was simply modeled after the description of
01:03:06Xibalba in the Popol Vuh, Vyanda insists that items from the cave date back to a time
01:03:12centuries before the Mayan holy book was written.
01:03:15It's not that there was this document and they try to imitate what the document said.
01:03:24I think it's all the other way around.
01:03:27We believe that we have found the particular Xibalba of the central parts of Yucatan.
01:03:33This is why we do believe it was a real place.
01:03:36But if Xibalba is real, were the lords of the dead also real?
01:03:44And if so, who or what were they?
01:03:51According to the Chilam Balam book, which is the book of the jaguar priests,
01:03:55I'm sorry, the road to the stars descended from the sky and the 13 and 9 gods came to earth.
01:04:09I'm sorry, road to the stars descended from the sky.
01:04:13Can it be more clear?
01:04:14I don't think so.
01:04:16Right there, we have a direct reference to someone that has arrived from outer space.
01:04:22And we have a written record about this.
01:04:26Could the lords of Xibalba and other Mayan gods really have been extraterrestrial travelers?
01:04:35If so, why did they display such a thirst for blood and torture?
01:04:41I do not believe human sacrifice was originally taught by the ETs.
01:04:45I believe it came in the aftermath of when the original teachers of humankind had arrived.
01:04:51The ancient gods, which were really just humans from another world,
01:04:58withdrew from the area, and the people became distraught.
01:05:02The more they became distraught, the more they took the original mythology
01:05:08and interpreted it in a much more literal way.
01:05:11So what might have started out as the myth about the sun dying and being reborn when it
01:05:15sinks below the horizon becomes literally the idea of killing people to make sure the sun is going to come back up.
01:05:25As archaeologists and explorers continue to uncover sites where legend and reality meet,
01:05:32could there be even more evidence that mankind's history on this planet is much more profound than
01:05:39what we currently understand. There are those who believe the secret lies even deeper within the earth,
01:05:46as deep as its very core.
01:05:52You can't talk about underground mysteries without mentioning the hollow earth theory
01:05:56that was proposed back in the 1600s.
01:05:59Yeah, and personally, it doesn't really work for me, but the moment that you change the word
01:06:04hollow to inner, then all of a sudden it makes sense to me because we know for a fact that gigantic
01:06:11chambers exist underneath the earth's crust.
01:06:15Right, then you have the writings of the Mayans, the Buddhists, the Kabbalists.
01:06:19They all speak of these multiple levels beneath the earth that are inhabited by non-human entities.
01:06:25We covered this in a 2015 episode called The Other Earth.
01:06:32Woolpit Village, the 12th century A.D.
01:06:38Two small children mysteriously appeared near the opening of a cave.
01:06:42A boy and a girl speaking in a language that is indecipherable.
01:06:48But even more on, their skin is green.
01:06:53The farmers in the area who were harvesting vegetables came upon these two children.
01:06:59Their skin was green and their clothing was said to be made of a strange fabric.
01:07:05It was a fabric unfamiliar to the people who were describing them.
01:07:09The children are immediately whisked off and put into isolation from the rest of the village
01:07:16for several days because no one is sure if they're actually human.
01:07:20The children said that they came from the land of St. Martin.
01:07:25A land that was in many ways much like earth.
01:07:30They described the place that they came from as not being as bright as our land is.
01:07:38There was no bright sun, there was no dark night.
01:07:41But it was a sort of twilight land with the sky the color of early evening.
01:07:48Prominent 12th century historian William of Newburgh included a detailed account of the green
01:07:54children in his major work, History of English Affairs.
01:08:00He noted that they eventually acclimated to their new environment.
01:08:04The children gradually became part of the community. The boy, the younger of the two children died,
01:08:11but the girl survived and there is some serious tracking of her descendants indicating that she
01:08:16is a real person in history. Many theories have been proposed as to where exactly these children came from.
01:08:24The most popular theory seems to be that they came from another planet.
01:08:31A planet with a different type of orbit, a planet that was not exposed to the sun.
01:08:36Does the well-documented account of the green children of Wolpen give Cretans to the existence
01:08:43of another inhabited world separate from our own? Some ancient astronaut theorists suggest
01:08:51that another Earth may exist not in space, but deep within the Earth, right under our feet.
01:09:04June 13th, 2014. Scientists researching the Earth's mantle announce that they have found what they
01:09:14believe to be a vast body of water, three times the volume of all of our oceans combined.
01:09:21contained within a mineral layer 400 miles inside the Earth. The discovery shakes the foundation of what
01:09:30scientists and scholars thought they knew about the ground under our feet.
01:09:36We have just scratched the surface of the Earth. We drilled down like eight miles and we had to stop
01:09:42because it got too hot. Out of 4,000 miles basically to the core of the Earth, we went down eight.
01:09:51That's nothing. We have more than 70 active space programs right now. We can tell you more about the
01:09:58surface of the Moon than we can the surface underneath our own oceans.
01:10:03Our scientific understanding of the internal structure of the Earth is primarily based on observations of
01:10:14seismic waves generated during earthquakes and knowledge of Earth's gravitation field.
01:10:21Since we have not actually drilled down far enough to confirm these findings, could it be
01:10:27that we may be wrong about the composition of our own Earth? Some ancient astronaut theorists
01:10:35say yes and suggest that according to our earliest mythologies, an other Earth might not be found in the
01:10:43heavens but deep within our own planet. One of the most consistent themes that we find in ancient cultures
01:10:51when we travel around the world is the idea that there is another world, another Earth inside of the planet.
01:11:01One of those is the Maya tradition. They have a holy book called the Popel Vuh.
01:11:07Inside this book it talks about two twin boys that came up out of the Earth and were actually the first
01:11:15humans on the planet. And to this day they still believe that life force comes from inside the planet,
01:11:23not from outside in heaven. The Mayans have this, the Tibetans have this, the Hopi Indians have this.
01:11:33Within Buddhism there's stories of a place called Agartha or Agarti which is an inner world and it's
01:11:40inhabited too by people and that they are an advanced race and even that they have trains and vehicles
01:11:47that are moving through this inner Earth. The most ancient teachings share with us the shocking revelation
01:11:58that the Garden of Eden was on no place on the face of the Earth but rather the Earth is hollow and that
01:12:05the Garden of Eden is an entire domain in inner Earth. So are these stories literal? There are those
01:12:15who believe that they are. Is it possible that an other Earth can be located within the confines of our
01:12:23own planet? Historically underground realms were not relegated to mere mythology. Well-respected scientists
01:12:33and mathematicians have long speculated about a theory that became known as hollow Earth.
01:12:40The scientist Edmund Haley is most famous for Haley's comment. He was also very interested in the
01:12:45Earth and one of the challenges is was trying to figure out what was the real structure of the inside
01:12:50of the Earth. He had a fascinating theory of not just a hollow Earth but an Earth with multiple layers
01:12:57and many different atmospheres with many different layers of land and Earth circling and being
01:13:03concentric as you went towards the center. 75 years later 18th century mathematician Leonhard Euler put forth
01:13:13his own hollow Earth theory with no concentric shells and the sun at the center spanning 600 miles.
01:13:20Euler was a gifted mathematician. He developed this idea that the planet of Earth is not only hollow
01:13:31but the poles are actually thin and there are actually entrances into the inner core at the north
01:13:37and south poles of the Earth. He imagined that there were advanced civilizations living inside the planet.
01:13:45Ideas of an occupied hollow Earth would be revisited nearly two centuries later in 1947 when famous polar
01:13:55explorer Admiral Richard Byrd flew reconnaissance missions over the North Pole. Byrd allegedly reported
01:14:05in his private journal about a mysterious land beyond the North Pole which he called the center of the
01:14:12the great unknown. I've always been a huge fan of Jules Verne and when he published a journey to the
01:14:23center of the Earth in the late 19th century this idea of a whole other world inside the Earth became a hot
01:14:31topic once again. And then again in the mid 20th century when stories emerged about Navy Admiral Richard
01:14:37Byrd first pilot to fly over both the North and the South Pole some accounts say he actually
01:14:42discovered an opening into the Earth. Yeah I mean this notion of beings living inside the Earth persists
01:14:49even to today and we covered this in an early season two episode of Ancient Aliens.
01:15:02The North Pole, a seemingly endless wasteland of arctic ice shrouded in darkness for six months of every year.
01:15:12Here there is no food, no shelter, not even a cave to hide from the slashing winds and temperatures that can
01:15:20dive to 90 degrees below zero. But according to mainstream geology beneath the pole and the arctic ocean lies the
01:15:30Earth's mostly rocky crust up to 30 miles thick. Below this is molten rock heated by the planet's spinning core
01:15:39of the planet's spinning core with a solid center of iron and nickel the size of the moon. Scientists have
01:15:46deduced this information from measurements of Earth's gravity, magnetism and seismic waves.
01:15:54But no one has ever seen these areas. Could the frozen surface of the pole be hiding a gateway to a world
01:16:03within our surface world? There are those who believe the answer is yes.
01:16:15And what they believe is known as the hollow Earth theory.
01:16:19The hollow Earth theory is that this Earth is not molten inside. It is actually hollow.
01:16:28And that suspended in the hollow of the Earth is an inner sun.
01:16:35Surprisingly, the notion of a hollow Earth
01:16:37was first given scientific credence by one of the founders of modern astronomy.
01:16:44The idea that the Earth might be hollow as a scientific notion dates back to the astronomer Edmund Haley,
01:16:51who is best known for his comet.
01:16:54In 1691, he presented to the London Royal Society his hypothesis that the Earth is hollow.
01:17:06He also suggested that these interior spheres would also be able to support life.
01:17:14In 1818, former U.S. Army Captain John Cleve Sims, Jr. announced that there were vast openings at each pole.
01:17:24Where we could enter inner Earth.
01:17:28With Sims, the idea of a hollow Earth gets tied into exploring for the pole.
01:17:34At this point, nobody had actually seen Antarctica, for instance.
01:17:40The hollow Earth theory again captured the public's imagination in 1864,
01:17:45with the release of Jules Verne's second novel, A Journey to the Center of the Earth.
01:17:51The novel takes an Icelandic guide and a professor and a young man down into the center of the Earth.
01:18:01Journey to the Center of the Earth could really have been called a journey to the center of geology.
01:18:06Geology and paleontology were a very hot topic in the early 1860s,
01:18:11and there is a lot of discussion of that in Journey to the Center of the Earth.
01:18:17But while Verne popularized the idea that extinct life forms might still exist inside the Earth,
01:18:23others envisioned that the Earth contained advanced underground civilizations.
01:18:27Supposedly, they have advanced technology. They've got ray guns and special weapons,
01:18:37and even they have flying saucers and other craft like that.
01:18:40But is there any evidence that such fantastic claims could be true?
01:18:47And has anyone actually been to the world within our Earth?
01:18:51Proponents of the hollow Earth theory say yes, and that one of the explorers was no less
01:18:57a luminary than famed polar pioneer Admiral Richard E. Byrd.
01:19:01In the 1920s, Byrd made world headlines by flying over the North Pole,
01:19:08and by becoming the first man to fly solo over the South Pole.
01:19:14But hollow Earth theorists believed that the famous explorer went even farther,
01:19:19and that on February 19, 1947, Admiral Byrd piloted a plane through a hole near the North Pole
01:19:28into the interior of the Earth.
01:19:31Flying saucer type craft took control of his airplane with some kind of tractor beam.
01:19:40And they landed them near our inner Earth city, and the message that they had for us was that
01:19:46they consider themselves the guardians of this planet, okay? He says, we don't approve of you
01:19:52people using nuclear weapons. We had just blown up a couple of cities in Japan a couple of years before.
01:20:01So this was the message that he was given. But when he got to Washington, they put a lid of secrecy
01:20:09on this, that this was not to go out.
01:20:11Some say Admiral Byrd's own account of this flight into the hollow Earth is detailed in his secret diary,
01:20:21published in the 1990s, almost four decades after his death. But skeptics claim the diary is a forgery,
01:20:30and point out that in February 1947, at the time Admiral Byrd was supposedly visiting this other world
01:20:37underneath the North Pole. He was actually part of a vast 4,700-man naval exploration called
01:20:45Operation High Jump, 12,000 miles away, near the South Pole.
01:20:53But could Byrd's inclusion in this large military operation at the South Pole have been merely a cover
01:20:59story? Some people claim it was. And this allowed him to slip away to the other end of the planet,
01:21:07unnoticed by the media. Admiral Byrd, the rumor was, found a world of flying machines and people and more
01:21:17advanced than us, and that they helped him and then he left again. It's a myth. Nobody's really been able
01:21:24to prove it, but it's a great myth. Could there really be vast open spaces within the Earth where
01:21:32advanced civilizations live? Could extraterrestrial gods really have come here centuries ago and hidden
01:21:41the evidence of their journeys deep within caves and tunnels? Perhaps we've only just scratched the surface
01:21:49of our planet's underground mysteries. If so, what clues to our distant past might still be waiting to
01:21:57be found and hiding in the darkness? Discovering things underground is very difficult, but we're now
01:22:05getting technology that allows us to see underground and find these hidden structures. Would you guys go into
01:22:12them? Would you go into these deep underground? Yes. I've, I've been in some, I've been in some, yeah, in,
01:22:19in Asia and in South America. We tend to focus outwards into outer space when we're looking for
01:22:24extraterrestrials, but maybe we should really be focusing underneath the surface of our Earth.
01:22:29Our ancestors, the great cultures have always said, as above, so below. So what more is there below?
01:22:42might be this below?
01:22:44There it is below ourtag for each of ourmarchs.
01:22:46That's why we,
01:22:48you think so?
01:22:50Popper canals for an apes is within a circle of us right.
01:22:54There it's really aẫnある chanel thing,
01:22:57the strength of the karameh,
01:22:59of a race is about each and our important part,
01:23:01the strength of the kamehameha,
01:23:04the strength of the way and just as status,
01:23:06and that's why we've never seen as the partners.
01:23:08We have to really copper happening here.
