00:00he's been branded as the serial kisser but in actuality he's much more than that
00:12he's a mainstream movie star of the masses and his stardom could well best be described as silent
00:18he keeps a really low profile doesn't attend fraternity bashes and there's very little we
00:22know about his personal life let's find out if over a cup of coffee we find out what makes
00:27imran hashmi really tick
00:29welcome welcome to coffee with karan thank you thank you
00:44all right so this is your first time on the show it is it is yes are you are you aware of this show
00:53are you aware of you're not aware of me or we can just take it as it goes should we just take it
00:57i've seen a couple of episodes oh you have i was coming you know what's coming your homework you've
01:01done your homework a bit of homework all right so you know what's coming your way not really okay
01:05well i said this you know what i said in my introduction kind of rings true because there
01:10is so little that one knows about you yeah and i said you know your stardom could well be described
01:14as silent yes you're never seen at a party your profile is totally low we don't know anything
01:19about your personal life that's a good thing in a sense yes uh but why this why were you always like
01:24this as a person or did you create this to create an aura about you no it's it's how i am as a person
01:31i think there's a certain duality in the kind of person that i am right um when i've never wanted to
01:36be an actor i was slowly nudged into this profession right i never had a burning ambition to be an actor
01:41right and uh it's not like i i didn't explore these things i think the peripherals of of filmmaking
01:47you have the parties you have the award functions right it's not like i've not done it
01:51right um i did very early early on in my career but uh i didn't enjoy it i didn't connect with it
01:57a i don't see bollywood films right um i tried to go to a couple of film parties that's the biggest
02:02irony yeah i i went to a couple of film parties and what do you do in a party your 90 of your
02:07conversations are about films right and you have no idea what's going on in the film industry
02:11so uh but why so you feel like why this aversion to an industry that's giving it's not an aversion
02:17it's just that i've grown up uh watching i've not watched too many bollywood films when i was
02:21growing up right and it didn't change after i i got into films um after i found a career here
02:27but that's so strange because you know you're known as a movie star who's actually catered to
02:33the masses which is right really the deep core of mainstream cinema like and the dichotomy
02:38there is that you don't watch any mainstream movies yourself i don't i don't but then it comes
02:42down to this if if uh you don't need to watch those films i'm ignorant i'm ap apathetic to those
02:50things and i think then what comes out of through my films is i wouldn't say purely original but
02:56there's it's more individualistic than something else i'm not sourcing out of other things and i'm
03:01very glad i don't watch bollywood films you're glad i'm glad i'm glad that you're not a consumer
03:06yes because you feel you can bring a certain stamp of originality to your own work not i don't think
03:11there's anything like original i think everything is sourced out of something else there's always a
03:15reference point out there um you know so i think um it's just it's a new reference point so was there
03:22a method you adapted to kiss the way you do on screen is there a method because clearly everyone
03:28says that uh even i remember uh director once told me he says you know i think he's kind of cracked it
03:33how to make a kiss look good uh he said because uh renzel actually told me and he's worked with
03:38you he said i don't know somehow the way he kisses a woman you know bizarre it wasn't that film right
03:43yeah it just came out of no i know it came out of nowhere it was a scene that was created
03:46but when you're being branded the serial kisser and i've not enough has been said about that
03:51but really is that a craft that you have kind of thought of no it's watched about how to make a
03:55kiss look good practice makes perfect i think it started off with murder obviously that was like
04:00the first erotic thriller that we had and yeah uh people had not seen a film like that before
04:05uh i obviously didn't see bollywood films so i didn't know what i was getting myself into
04:10for some reason everyone was nervous on the set because they were doing something that
04:13wasn't attempted before right i didn't know that because i had the west as a reference point
04:17right if i had seen basic instinct in school right i thought probably i'm just playing that out right now
04:22yeah you know you're probably one of the only husbands in the in movie land who's allowed to do
04:26yes the kind of things that you do on screen uh because we know very little about your wife
04:31yes your wife pareen is apparently your your heart high school sweetheart yes you married her
04:35we never see her we don't know what she looks like we don't know what she does
04:39and we don't know how she's reacting to what you're doing on screen at all i'll tell you how
04:43the reaction goes i my first film murder uh i i i made uh not my first my second film but the
04:50first erotic thriller that i'd done uh i made the mistake of sitting next to her and i remember my
04:55the preview theater right uh was filled with my close friends and family right and uh they knew
05:01what the film had but they didn't know how we were pushing the envelope in this right or rather tearing
05:06it or tearing it yeah i was sitting next to my wife my grandmom was sitting behind me in the last
05:11row oh dear and uh she's very vocal when she doesn't like things um god bless us all she's she passed
05:17away five months back right she's uh she used to do this when when she didn't like something in a film
05:23she used to do and that's all i could hear through the entire film of through the entire screening of
05:31that film but there were a lot of points to do that's it that's i think that's all i heard in
05:35the entire film right my grandmom doing that and the first scene my wife digging her nails into my hand
05:42like what the hell have you done and you haven't prepared me for this and what are you doing because
05:46this is not bollywood when when the hands came off in the climax there were like
05:50you were injured you were injured i was injured i was bleeding and now has she just accepted the
05:55situation that you are she's not accepted it we've hit a common ground uh right now there's a deal
06:00that we have what is the deal is um i take her shopping and and and she she probably uh swipes the
06:12card close to seven digit numbers but it's also beyond kissing because you've also done
06:16very intense love making scenes yes i have you know you've done it all haven't you i have not all
06:20yeah uh this is as much as i can do i'm not showing uh anything more on screen right no dropping
06:27towels no no showing butt cracks nothing none of that none of that and so there is a ceiling imran
06:32hasmi has a ceiling yes there's no butt cracks no dropping probably the next generation might push the
06:37envelope or tear it like you said but uh this is as far as i go man this is as far as you go and i'd
06:42like to call my next guest tonight who actually took you to those places yes uh you should blame him
06:48for it i should blame him yes you should all right my next guest tonight is possibly one of the most
06:51intelligent minds in the business he is a filmmaker who's made some of the most spectacular pieces of
06:56work on celluloid and one day gave it all up today leads a production house that is known for its low
07:01budget but high on content and great music cinema please welcome the exceptionally intelligent
07:06and bright mahesh bhat welcome to the show bhat sahib so you've been blamed bhat sahib you've been blamed by the man
07:30for dropping his clothes reaching high points of sexual intensity on celluloid making him this brand
07:39sex appeal raw raunchy serial kisser everything you do you take this blame entirely well that penthouse
07:48that he has in the beverly hills of india called pali hill right um which costs how many crores about 40 crores
07:57is thanks to that image that was given to him because left to himself right he didn't have the means to buy
08:07a cycle so he should be grateful grateful grateful it is erotica yes and the great music right that was provided
08:17yes this guy that made him the heartthole of the nation and thanks to him uh we did get a lot of muscle
08:26in the last decade right and he has delivered some great money spinners for us yes music money spinners
08:33yes all that sex appeal and did you ever think when he faced the camera for footpath for the very first time
08:38uh that he would have it in him to project this kind of sexy image that he went on to kind of achieve
08:43well i can never get over that photo session where he was supposed to be posing with amisha patel
08:50she was a big star after the other i remember he was kind of pushed in front of the camera with
08:57uh with amisha and i went there and i injected all the passion i could whip up from my body
09:03into him then i saw him come alive but i could see that there was a flicker there was something that
09:09i could light up in him right but then i left a space for the director and uh because i don't
09:14normally uh step over their toes and tread on you know that's their space and what came back uh
09:23at the end of the day right was a disaster in fact it was his grandmother the great purnima
09:27right uh of the bygone days she was an actress she said do you think this guy can ever become an actor
09:33he looks petrified he looks like a whipped dog as if he has been whipped and put into a corner
09:40and i don't blame that poor girl for saying no to him she said no there's no way i'm going to act with him
09:45and uh oh she refused the club she was thrown no i don't blame for that because i i wasn't prepared
09:51for that situation and i i wasn't very good in that one photo shoot and don't forget the first day
09:55first show of football first day first shooting day 36 42 takes 42 we didn't get it straight what did
10:02you have to do we had to say a line uh the line was uh i i had to say a line where i said that uh
10:08uh so that was directed to aftab right and i didn't get it i my voice wasn't coming out 40
10:17retakes we didn't get it we had to pack up next day i got it and then of course you went on to achieve
10:22everything you did now you've built this whole sexy vibe and you know that's what people time and again
10:27say we want to see imran hashmi kiss can you imagine it's a distributor demand it's it's an exhibitor demand
10:33he has to lip sync a sad song he has to kiss your projection is that yet you come home uh is your
10:39life truly contrary then to your image because it has to be are you a good are you how good are you
10:44are you a faithful husband no i i would have uh to have a life that's completely contrary to that
10:49otherwise i would have on the show i would i would have divorced long time back so do you think you're
10:54getting your fix any which way on screen so you don't have to meander in the real world the right
10:59answer would be it's extremely technical that's my wife because she'll be watching the show it's
11:04extremely technical right and uh it's for the scene and nothing is bigger than the film so i'm a
11:09professional i always uh protest on a film set when i have to do a uh kissing scene but you don't protest
11:15too much clearly i i i do protest i protested in your film yeah and then we had a very absurd moment
11:20over there where i was supposed to kiss someone i didn't know right and it was like hi how are you
11:24doing and then after that five minutes later we're kissing under a bush yeah so uh that was the most
11:29bizarre thing i didn't know her yeah so that gets even more bizarre when you don't know there was a
11:33there was a time when he tried to de-link himself you know what happens right uh with most of these
11:38people they make a kind of a mark with this very bold erotic uh film right and then they come into the
11:47limelight and then suddenly this this need to become conservative because they want respectability because
11:53they find that uh while they're getting all these applause there's also a section which looks at
11:58them with disdain demeaning or they are or they are not really um you know they're depraved human
12:05beings and they are not worthy to be you know i love that do you like that image no so he you know he he
12:11tried to kind of unstitch himself from that persona until one day if you remember we i was driving in my
12:18car and i saw an auto rickshaw yeah and behind that there was this letter right serial kisser there
12:26was this image yeah and i said imi why are we doing that we had made awarapan right and it had not
12:31worked right very somber very serious film very well made film by mohit and that's when i said i think
12:36the mistake was that your audience went there to see a kind of romantic cinema where you are you know
12:43seducing a person and i was playing a saint and there he was this angst reason guy who was doing
12:48yeah and it did not work it was a very well-made film and i said the audience tells you what to do
12:53so i said back to your core constituency back to kissing and that's when really back to kissing
13:00you see the reason why i'm doing this i mean how how long can you sustain this can you imagine me
13:05being 55 55 60 poses and postures can you kind of privately told me he said but sir what did i tell
13:12my son when he grows up into a 10 year old kid what am i doing on this no right now he feels daddy's
13:18very cool yeah so i'm okay with this so i'll kiss another 20 years he's three and a half he's three
13:23and a half he's clearly three and a half is no age for him to kind of go to school and hear that hey your
13:29daddy's a serial kisser he will hear it in the next two years yeah i don't know what he'll make out of
13:33i mean i keep thinking what i would think if i went to school and someone said that about my dad
13:38however i would be proud of it i would be like red with embarrassment i think you'd be pretty pretty
13:42okay with that but you know the fact that you don't meet anyone from the industry probably saves you of
13:47a lot of grief because you know sometimes you know like if i was saying if his wife was kind of
13:51fraternizing with other people speaking to other people you then there's a kind of self-policing that
13:56kind of takes over in the real world i mean does she have like friends who would kind of tell her
13:59that this is uncool no i think uh her family did say that uh there was i got married to her
14:05probably three years into my career right and i think most of her family told her that uh this
14:11guy is no good yeah because i think you blur the lines right so you meet the person and obviously
14:17you know they realized i'm not a guy who just go to women and start kind of uh catch them and start
14:23smooching them they realize that that's what they thought they thought yeah and i think the audience
14:26sings that too but they realize that i'm not that guy you know you know when we when we made murder
14:32too right and i remember telling mohit i said look mohit let's get the kiss out of the way as soon as
14:37possible this is a very serious film right like hitchcock in which yeah when you used to go to see a
14:41hitchcock film we always wanted to see where hitchcock was in the frame right and once he made an appearance
14:46and you could concentrate on the film so i said look with emmy the audience audience is very anxious yeah
14:50when is the first kiss coming so for god's sake get the kiss out of the way so we made sure that the kiss
14:56was there in the first 10 minutes and once the audience had seen him kiss and there was this
15:01house house which erupted with with cities and talis and hoo-ha i said now they are ready to watch the
15:08film i've actually seen a film what they have come to see no i've seen one of our films where the kiss
15:12wasn't there right and i've heard what the audience is said which is what which is uh yeah yeah yeah so
15:19that's that's the reaction that's just ridiculous that is ridiculous that is how the audience makes
15:24you a prisoner they think you're bimar if you're not kissed a woman on screen i mean that's ridiculous
15:28that is just ridiculous and then after that there was no stopping me after that have you ever thought
15:34of it that you know he's built a brand that if actually he went out and did a really steamy erotic
15:39film but the problem is the schizophrenia you are you know you want both this constituency you want to
15:44eat the cake and have it too right and that's not possible you i mean unfortunately we don't have that kind
15:49of that space in our country yet of adult content and i think uh it's a space that is worth uh
15:59venturing anything with well hold that thought before we oh he's by the way agreed to explore that
16:05he's willing to be exploited and explore that well on that note i'm going to take my first break in
16:11conversation with imran hashmi and maesh but stay tuned lots more coming up we'll be back
16:20in conversation with mahes bhat and imran hashmi what's up when i look at your life i feel like
16:26you know two wives so many children a career that you just stopped at all of a sudden when you look
16:33back at this entire life what is the the first burst of thoughts that actually come into your head
16:38how did i make it i mean yeah how did you when i look back i wonder how did i navigate through this
16:48bizarre space i mean if you and i look back at my life in the early in my early 20s dropping acid
16:56going to the spiritual supermarket looking for enlightenment an extramarital affair with an
17:01actress of the bygone days was a time magazine girl seeing her collapse right in front of her
17:07the eyes because she was hit by schizophrenia and then becoming a wreck and then you're having a you
17:14know being dismissed as a stillborn uh director and then somehow miraculously making your mark by
17:21an autobiographical film art kind of right giving me a lease of life and then uh achieving dizzying
17:28success in the first three four years of my 30s and then the loneliness of success because nothing
17:35faced the success right because the moment i became successful i i said is this all that life has to
17:42offer me because i had gone through the gamut right and i there was nothing to go beyond because the
17:49spiritual quest was exhausted even before i had begun my journey so i somehow i i give the analogy karan is
17:58of a straight dog who somehow makes it across the street at peak hours right and survives now when people
18:05ask me to pontificate about the meaning and the mystery of life i said i have no business i'm like
18:08that that dog was somehow survived i can't get on a platform and start giving lectures to people
18:14because the stream that i swam through was different the times were different but there was this real
18:21this this continuous uh ability to reinvent myself and to have this and i had this masochistic ability to see
18:29my own uh foibles and my own frailties and my own uh uh inadequacies i continuously grappled with that
18:36do you think it takes a toll really on the on the children like you have uh like you know on your on
18:41your daughters do you think that all of them today are definitely have like an altered mindset only
18:47because they've seen the lives of their parents fall apart and come together do you think somewhere it
18:52takes a toll on the children in fact somebody said that uh um uh my age but dysfunctional uh lifestyle
18:59has traumatized uh his kids i said in fact that is their wealth in fact uh if i if you take away my
19:06my own childhood trauma from me i'm empty and there is nothing there in fact your scars your wounds your
19:13life burns contribute a lot to shape you into what you are and i think uh today when i look at my children
19:20um they have been through that phase where they felt oh our home is not like the neighbor's home
19:27right but whose home is actually like the neighbor's home there was always a pretense to be like the
19:32neighbor's home right because as the great uh um godfather series said that every family has its own
19:39dark secret yes i just didn't have the uh the energy to carry on pretending to the world and emulate
19:47somebody else and that's why i think i had a lot of energy to continuously reinvent myself and i think
19:54to be in the business for 40 years yes uh with a disastrous first 10 years and to still be here
20:01and still be afloat is is perhaps an indication that there was some animal energy which was kind of uh
20:09pushing me pushing you forward forward well i have someone who actually has some has something to say to
20:14the both of you uh let's have a look it'll take you back into time that's you
20:24i remember the first time i saw footpath um at uh ad labs in film city uh we were watching
20:32uh imran and i didn't know that he was related to me at that time actually that's a bit of a complexity in
20:38our family that i don't know who is related to me it's a bit of an issue but i've been tackling it
20:43now and i think sometime after footpath um i don't know if it's footpath or another film but he got
20:49mobbed uh on the streets and i was sitting in the office and my father said hey he's got mob got mob
20:56call him up so i picked up the phone on him i called him up and i said that how does it quoting my father
21:02how does it feel like being on the verge of becoming a superstar and he said well i already feel like
21:10a superstar so uh that minute itself i thought okay he's uh he's related to the bharis because he's
21:17obsessed with himself i remember as a child my father was pretty much like a star for me
21:31because i didn't get to see him as much um but uh i always spoke about him in school uh using the
21:37mahej bhat's daughter tag it was sort of a proud thing for me and then soon he started making some
21:45very bold films and then they started saying oh your father makes a rated films but i still wasn't
21:52embarrassed i was still proud about i said yeah so like you don't watch a rated films to boys obviously
21:57some things you all probably don't know about my father is that he's obsessed with himself
22:01that's maybe why i'm obsessed with myself because it's him he loves hearing people talk about him
22:07he loves hearing praise um he refers to himself as mahej bhat sometimes or the old man which i think
22:16sometimes is really vain and he calls me vain but um i mean it's cool i mean i i think it's really
22:23enduring mahej bhat didn't was not a topper at school but uh he's a topper everywhere else and
22:29he'll go to give these lectures at the schools that didn't think he was good enough so that's
22:34something that i have to live up to as well but i won't be able to there will be only one mahej bhat
22:39uh but uh soon you will start being referred to as alia bhat's father and i hope that happens very soon
22:49she's given one full keynote speech and made you all sound like the royal tenant bombs all of you
22:56i think she makes the whole atmosphere sound beautifully dysfunctional yeah she just does she
23:01gave me the feeling that she was right here yeah the ability to connect yeah but what she said was
23:06right uh in our family yeah before i joined rishesh films i i think i met bhat sahab all of two or
23:13three times you didn't know you were related he was he's my cha-cha but i had met him thrice before that
23:19and that's how our family is because i don't know he didn't have the time yeah obviously he's very busy
23:24and we i think his surprise birthday party which was uh one and a half two months ago right
23:31in 34 years that's the first time my entire family was together oh really in 65 and there was an
23:38assault and suddenly i saw all these guys claiming to be a part of me and and i was i was scared because
23:47i don't know how he's going to react we're all standing in one dark room yeah waiting to pounce
23:50on him yeah and the moment the doors open i was like i don't know what he's going to do probably
23:54throw a coffee cup at me yeah because he doesn't like surprises right but uh yeah it was just after
24:00it's the first time in 34 years everyone met everyone met and so there there is a certain
24:05dysfunctionality definitely but there is immense love i mean you know i think that that i can see
24:10even right dysfunctional is an understatement understatement but i think whenever there's a problem in
24:15this in the family everyone is there right everyone comes together but do you know who to go to
24:21because because you don't know who you're related to so you know i know who to go for for money yeah
24:26mukeshji i know that's that's that's that's what is money what does mahesh bad give you
24:32an insight on life do you think he's like a path therapist path mentor he is he's a he's a he's a shrink
24:39he is and this is the first experience i had with him because i was uh frivolous out of college
24:45confused everything's about girls partying my day never started off before 11 a.m but he's been like that
24:50himself yeah so he identified when i went to him and when i i said yes that i would become an actor
24:56it was like i almost had moved into an ashram right uh because but saab gets up at at i don't think he
25:01sleeps right and he said that okay now your training starts and i had to go and write not write but
25:07assist him in writing a script where he used to get up at four in the morning and i i remember i just
25:12sleep on the sofa in his suite and i used to get a newspaper chucked at me at 4 a.m right and then
25:19my first script was written you traumatized him traumatized completely i think he has
25:24much to be grateful yes i have yeah thank you but i think that he definitely has acknowledged time
25:29and again yes he definitely keep on doing that in kind yes i do that his hands reach halfway through
25:34his pocket and come out do you think he's a miser miser oh please what's up i'm not a miser you're an
25:40extortionist i have every reason to take kickbacks there's a deal i have crafted this persona oh yeah
25:47i have every right to ask for kickback the mafia does it was a deal what is the deal after after
25:52every film that's that's a successful film that's a hit i'm supposed to give him a gift uh money in
25:58the bank or some gadget or something he wants my choice i've had a lot of hit films yeah so uh yeah
26:03he's got like 40 tablets is that but what about a lot of money in the bank so has it been a successful
26:11deal but it has been a very successful after i push him uh a tad point then he finally uh reluctantly
