00:00Holiday festivities provide seasonal cheer, but they can also set the stage for the hazards
00:04of alcohol overconsumption.
00:06Those hazards have become prominent in recent discourse.
00:08The Canadian government stirred up controversy early this year by issuing guidelines recommending
00:12that adults have only two alcoholic drinks per week, or ideally, less.
00:17And holiday family gatherings can provide an opportunity for children to absorb alcoholic
00:21behaviors from their family.
00:22National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism Director George F. Koob told USA Today, if
00:27parents start drinking and misusing alcohol getting tipsy in front of the kids, that sets
00:31up a pattern that they're going to emulate.
00:34So if you're trying to cut down your own consumption this year, The New York Times has recommended
00:37embracing non-alcoholic beverages and focusing on activities that don't have to involve drinking,
00:42like ice skating or karaoke.
00:44And if you know someone else who's declining a drink, Driftwood Recovery's Vanessa Kennedy
00:47told CBS News that it's best to respect their choice and not pressure them to explain it.
00:52The new year may be the traditional time for resolutions, but it's never too soon to try
00:56and develop healthy habits or to support others in theirs.
