00:00What makes a building a home? Oh my goodness. That's a WOW in all caps. I'm
00:05Vern Yep. Hi. It's so nice to meet you. And I'm traveling across the country
00:09following the people who are stretching the definition of home to its limits. We
00:14need your help, we need your advice. From abandoned churches and schools to
00:18defunct firehouses and factories, brave builders are giving these architectural
00:22relics a new life by turning them into one-of-a-kind family homes. It's never
00:27crazy, but you don't get this kind of character with a house that you can just
00:32go buy. Oh my gosh. Can they make their larger than average dreams a reality? As
00:38a designer myself, I'm eager to learn and help them. This is the one. I think it
00:43pulls in all the colors. As they turn these unconventional spaces into their
00:47forever homes. This is Home Reimagined.
00:57In the rugged expanse of Northwest Montana, Kalispell is a thriving mountain town flanked
01:08by towering peaks and pristine lakes. It's the gateway to Glacier National Park and
01:14here, history, craftsmanship and a can-do mentality have shaped the community for
01:19generations. Tanner and Jana are a husband and wife team who purchased an abandoned
01:23brewery from the late 1800s and saw potential to create a really special
01:28home for themselves and their two boys. With their skills as a designer and
01:32furniture maker, I'm eager to see how they plan to infuse style and comfort into
01:36an otherwise cold industrial space. This is the kind of project I live for and I
01:42can't wait to see it in person.
01:44Hi. Hey Vern. Look at this beauty. So nice to meet you. You too. I'm Vern. Welcome to Montana. I'm Jana. And I'm Tanner. We both work in the home decor space and so I know that we're going to work together really well on this to make it feel soft and cozy and like a house instead of an old brewery. We love the challenge
02:06of finding older materials and bringing them back to life. So when we had the chance to buy this building,
02:11we just decided to go for it. We're going to make it into our home.
02:14This is beautiful enough that it competes with the surrounding mountains. I absolutely love these brick arches. The detailing, also the mix of window openings. It's the combination that really makes it so interesting.
02:28This is a 5,540 square foot historical brewery from 1894. Tanner and Jana purchased it for $650,000 and they'll be converting it to a home with three bedrooms and two baths.
02:41It used to be part of the Kalispell malting and brewing company. It was a pretty big deal. It was this whole block. And it was used that way until the 50s. They used to deliver beer by horse-drawn wagon. Okay. It was one of the biggest industries in Kalispell at the time. After that, it's just been sitting.
02:57It's one thing to sort of admire a beautiful structure like this, but it's entirely another thing to sort of decide you're going to tackle it.
03:06Yeah. A lot of people actually are like, you're a little bit crazy for doing this. We're like, you know, we know we are, but we love a challenge and, you know, the character of it.
03:15We actually saw it driving around one day and we thought, man, that is such a cool old building. It was abandoned. It looked so much worse than it does now.
03:23There was plants growing on the side of the building. A roof upstairs was like Swiss cheese.
03:28Open air concept, right?
03:32It wasn't for sale at the time, but we ended up renting the space next door for Tanner's workshop. And then we tracked down the owner and made an offer and bought the brewery.
03:41His workshop was actually right here on this empty concrete lot.
03:45We had a fire, unfortunately. Oh, I'm so sorry.
03:48Yep. He makes furniture. And so all of his tools, all of his wood, all of his finished pieces.
03:54In the matter of 30 minutes, the whole structure, it was pretty much gone.
04:00This is our fresh start. This is where we reprioritize. This is where you get to get back into your creativity a little more.
04:08And this is why we're so excited about having the time to work on this building because it's truly an inspiring building to us.
04:16So what's happening here?
04:18On the side of the brick building are these two sheds that don't quite match the history of the building.
04:22So we're going to be removing those structures and then adding a garage on the back.
04:26And we're excited to be able to utilize that space because there's going to be a rooftop that we can turn into an indoor outdoor space.
04:33One thing we have to settle is what we're going to do with the color of the exterior.
04:38I love the original brick. However, we know it's going to be a lot of work to get it back to that original state.
04:44There's a lot of brick that has seen better days and that's probably not going to be repairable.
04:49You'll probably have to replace a lot of it and then either sandblast the entire thing to clean it up or paint it one uniform color.
04:56So tell me about what the parameters are. Are you guys on any kind of schedule?
05:00Well, we would really love to get in before winter because he does not want to be working outside in the snow.
05:06Okay, so you've got about eight months. Clock is ticking it sounds like.
05:10Yeah, we've got our work cut out for us, but we'll get it done.
05:13We're the people to make it into a house and make it beautiful again.
05:16The beauty of the building is the fact that it's a blank slate.
05:19Um, as beautiful as the structure is outside, I am dying to see the inside.
05:25Oh, yeah. Absolutely. Can we have a look?
05:26Let's go. Let's go take a look.
05:27Okay.
05:29What do you think this door was used for? What do you think happened here?
05:32I mean, you know, they did deliver beer by horse-drawn wagons,
05:35so this could have been where horses went in and out.
05:38Oh, how cool. This is the original door?
05:41Mm-hmm. The original door.
05:42I love it. It's so beautiful.
05:45Tanner's new workshop is on the bottom floor,
05:48but we'll be living on the top floor.
05:51Welcome to our home.
05:52I know. I know.
05:53Oh, my goodness.
05:54Wow.
05:55Come on, these windows.
05:57Absolutely the star of the show, right?
05:59And then these panels that are filled in right now
06:02are going to be windows as well.
06:05I love that.
06:06I mean, it's already beautiful without having those put in,
06:09but you can only imagine how dramatic that's going to be.
06:12Yeah.
06:13And this incredible volume and the beautiful brick.
06:17This makes it feel bright and airy.
06:20I think getting lighting right in here
06:22is going to be really, really important.
06:25You've made the right move by already saying,
06:27oh, you know, let's drop a light in.
06:29Mm-hmm.
06:30We'll have to redo some electrical, obviously,
06:32to make it functional for a house,
06:34and actually do two big lights.
06:36So one that's centered sort of over the living area
06:39and one that's centered sort of over the dining area.
06:41The other thing that, you know, would be great
06:43is visual warmth, like through a fireplace.
06:45Yes.
06:46We do have a plan.
06:47Walk me through a little bit
06:49of how you see this space being laid out.
06:52Yeah.
06:53Okay.
06:54So when you come upstairs to the main space,
06:56you have the dining room with a built-in bar
06:58and a living room with a fireplace.
07:00Then we'll open up this brick wall and connect the kitchen.
07:04And above the kitchen, we're going to build a loft
07:07that is going to be a guest room.
07:09On the other side of the brewery is this massive room
07:12that we're going to have to divvy up
07:13into a lot of different spaces.
07:14We have a rec room, bathroom, two boys' rooms.
07:18We have the laundry room, primary bedroom,
07:21and then primary bathroom.
07:22There's also the other side of the bar
07:24and mechanical room.
07:26This we're going to punch out
07:28and we're going to make this into like a little bar area.
07:30It's like a date night in your own house, you know?
07:32It sounds very romantic.
07:34I'm all for that.
07:35What we wanted to do is make a big wall of cabinetry
07:38on the back and maybe a found piece
07:40or a built-in cabinet that either he makes
07:42or it's an antique piece that we find.
07:44I think the idea of having a bar in a brewery
07:47is really clever.
07:49You know, it in some ways pays homage
07:51to what this building was all about.
07:53I'm not entirely sure that that's where it should be,
07:56but I love the idea.
07:58You know, I wonder if you're going to create a bar,
08:01can you imagine being up on that loft
08:04and having drinks
08:05and then looking out into this window?
08:08It could be very cool.
08:10That'd be a good moment.
08:11And maybe that guest room
08:12that you were thinking about up there,
08:14maybe that takes the place
08:15of what this square footage
08:17would have been dedicated to.
08:18You know, a guest room is really only used
08:20when you have guests,
08:21but that space up there,
08:22you're going to want to be up there all the time.
08:24Yeah.
08:25That's it. I like that.
08:26This is what I was so excited about having Vern here for
08:29is just a different opinion.
08:31I don't want to be so set in my idea
08:34that I'm missing some awesome opportunity.
08:37I'm so glad he's giving us some things to think about.
08:39And then this wall is...
08:41This is going to be kitchen.
08:43We're actually going to be opening this space up quite a bit.
08:46I think it's like 10 feet opening
08:48that we're cutting into the brick here.
08:50And then after that, over here,
08:52we've got this cool door.
08:55Isn't that so cool?
08:57Fermenting cellar.
08:58Yes.
08:59The evidence of the fact that it was a brewery,
09:01I love that it's still there.
09:03You have to at least keep the thing above.
09:05Yes.
09:06If you don't keep the door.
09:07Yes.
09:08That's pretty great.
09:09I love the fact that it's evidence
09:11of what it used to be.
09:12It's history.
09:13Can I go in?
09:14You sure can.
09:15Yeah.
09:20So if you look up here,
09:22ceiling heights actually be a little bit lower in here
09:25because we didn't want to sacrifice all this space
09:28above the kitchen,
09:29and we wanted to be able to put in a loft above it.
09:32I mean, I think a lower ceiling in the kitchen
09:34is always going to be more effective.
09:36It's also going to be a nice contrast
09:38to what happens out there.
09:39And make it a little cozier inside the kitchen area.
09:41The kitchen should be like a hug.
09:43I just can't wait to see it actually done and be enjoying it.
09:48So where are you guys actually sleeping?
09:50Okay.
09:51Well, that is pretty important.
09:52So we'll show you that.
09:53That's a whole other wing of the building.
09:55So let's go look at that.
09:57This place does not end.
10:01Welcome to our living quarters.
10:04I think that you do have some challenges in front of you.
10:08These are bedrooms that don't currently have windows.
10:11We're actually going to be cutting in more windows into the brick.
10:14Get some natural light into the bedroom.
10:16So that sounds like something that's going to cost money and time.
10:20Yeah, it is.
10:21And I love the fact that we have some old historic windows ready to go.
10:25We've hoarded those for years, and now they're finally going to be put to use.
10:29Yeah.
10:30We can't get away from all the brick cutting.
10:32And, you know, the opening that was going to be coming into the bar where we're hoping
10:36to open that up.
10:37Do you want to open it up for us?
10:39I mean, is it really a question?
10:42No, at this point it's not.
10:44You're here and it's free labor.
10:46All right, let's go.
10:47Let's get it done.
10:48Let's get dusty.
10:50No matter what happens on the other side of this wall, I think this should be opened
10:56up, right?
10:57Yeah, for sure.
10:58I think we agree with you on that.
10:59You can decide later, but now we're going to bust this thing down.
11:01Yes.
11:02Right?
11:03I think no matter what it's going to be, it's going to be gone.
11:05Yes.
11:06I am really excited about helping them open up that passageway.
11:09Whether it ends up being a guest room or a speakeasy, I just hope that they pick what's
11:13right for them.
11:14It's going to get a little dusty, but I think we're going to start off by chipping away around
11:19some of the perimeter of the bricks, so we don't damage the brick on the outside.
11:23But once we get some of this worked out, maybe we can start swinging.
11:43There's a hole!
11:44Oh my goodness!
11:45That's a lot of layers!
11:49Wait till you get my bill for labor.
11:51Uh-uh!
11:52It's free labor!
11:53You said it.
11:54I think I'm clearly going to need a shower tonight.
11:56We have a little more ways to go, but I think that's going to be great.
12:00We should do a video check-in before my next visit, and at this video check-in, why don't
12:06we make sure, is this going to be the guest room, or is that going to be the guest room?
12:11There are no wrong answers, as long as you feel really good about it.
12:16I mean, we've got some thinking to do, so.
12:19I think that the other thing that would be really good to check in on would be when you
12:23open up this space between the kitchen and this main living room.
12:27Yeah.
12:28How connected it's actually going to be.
12:30I'm excited about it.
12:31You've given us a lot to think about, and we really appreciate the fresh eyes on the project.
12:35You guys are really, really talented and so skilled.
12:39This is going to be beautiful.
12:41Okay.
12:42Good luck.
12:43See you guys next time.
12:44Bye, Byrne.
12:45Some of the important things that I hope they keep in mind are, this is a brewery that you're
12:49making into a home.
12:50So really, let's think about how do we soften it?
12:53How do we honor the historic aspects of it, but at the same time, move it towards being
12:58a place that you can raise your family in?
13:00They don't have a lot of time.
13:02They have limited resources.
13:04So I think having a real handle on priorities is going to be critical.
13:16It's been almost a month since Byrne's visit and things are really moving along.
13:20The exterior brick has been damaged over many years of neglect and our crew is repairing
13:25the structural integrity of it.
13:28As an interior designer, I collect a lot of old things.
13:31So before we tear down the shed, we have to clear it out.
13:34Okay.
13:35This is what I was wanting to get to were these windows.
13:37We've been looking for a purpose for these for so long.
13:40It just screams historic brick building.
13:43Yeah.
13:44We could probably fit one in the bedroom and then one in the bathroom.
13:48That would be so gorgeous.
13:49Think about waking up looking through these.
13:51I know.
13:52That would just give me so much joy.
13:54It's definitely something that is kind of a sickness of ours, but I actually like the challenge
14:00of trying to puzzle piece something that wasn't made to fit there, but make it look like it
14:04was actually designed to fit there.
14:05Yeah.
14:06Like we turn them like this and use them for like a backsplash for the bar.
14:11Yeah, I like that.
14:12We have a big brick box.
14:15It needs a little bit of warmth and needs some things that kind of bring in the character.
14:20Yeah.
14:21A little bit of history.
14:22It's going to be a challenge, but I can already see just with the pieces we have, it's going
14:27to look incredible.
14:28All of the things that we love so much in our projects come from stuff like this.
14:32Things that we kind of piece together.
14:34So I'm excited about this.
14:35I think this is going to be perfect.
14:36This is a great idea.
14:37Oh, cool.
14:38All right, it's time to get back to work.
14:44Now that the brick repair has been finished outside, it's time to make the next big decision.
14:51Okay, before we commit to painting it, I just want to look at the brick one more time.
14:55I think the problem with leaving it is still the fact that it's going to cost us $40,000
15:01to sandblast it.
15:02I know.
15:03So as much as I hate to see the old brick go, I think budget-wise we have to paint it.
15:08So, all right, let's...
15:10Moment of truth.
15:11Yeah.
15:12Let's do some samples.
15:13All right.
15:14Painting is going to be $2,500 to $3,000.
15:17So it just seems like a no-brainer.
15:19Oh my gosh, this feels like such a big commitment right now.
15:22We doing the right thing?
15:24In it now.
15:25I know.
15:26I think I'm just a little bit worried about what everyone's going to think.
15:29There's just people that aren't going to be happy with the choice we make.
15:32But also it's our building, so we kind of got to make the choices that are right for us.
15:36I mean, stepping back, I really do like seeing some paint on the building.
15:40It kind of cleans it up a little bit.
15:42Yeah, I can tell you right now I don't love the dark.
15:45The lean's a little too modern for me.
15:47Yeah.
15:48I think that white really looks classic.
15:50It gives that historic feel.
15:51I think it's going to kind of help make it feel a little bit more fresh and clean.
15:55I'm feeling better about this.
15:57It'll be good.
15:58We just got to commit to it.
15:59Let's go.
16:00I got to clean my hands and shoes and clothes.
16:04Even though we're choosing not to keep the original brick color, honoring the brewery's past is still very important to us.
16:09The original fermentation seller sign has been here since the brewery was making beer.
16:14So we're going to repurpose it.
16:16But the door needs to be removed because we're opening up that entire wall.
16:20It would be such a shame to lose it.
16:23This is the part where we find a million dollars behind it.
16:27Yeah, there's a moment we've all been waiting for.
16:30I feel like there's a few different places it could go.
16:34Try not to break it.
16:35Oh my gosh.
16:37Go through all this just to snap it in half.
16:41Oh my gosh, it's coming.
16:46Woo!
16:47You good?
16:48I'm good.
16:49All right.
16:50Should probably be wearing safety glasses.
16:51There's your sign.
16:52That's crazy.
16:53That's an old piece of wood.
16:54Pretty cool though.
16:55I know.
16:56It's nice to have one win.
16:57Yep.
16:58We haven't talked to Vern in a little while and I know he's expecting an update.
16:59Hey!
17:00Hey Vern!
17:01So thinking we should probably give him a call and let him know what's going on.
17:15What's going to happen with the wall I know that we had originally discussed.
17:20You're going to punch into the existing brick wall.
17:23Our structural engineer really wants us to actually take the brick wall down completely
17:28and then we're actually going to reframe it.
17:30So that will allow us to open that up even further.
17:33I absolutely love that.
17:35And this is actually going to make this more of a home to have that kitchen just flow seamlessly
17:41to the main living space.
17:43I think that's a really smart move.
17:45Yeah.
17:46Do you see that we completed the opening right here?
17:49All that hard work.
17:50I see that.
17:52It looks great.
17:53The one thing though, I think we are going to keep our little speakeasy in that spot.
17:59Okay.
18:00You know, I love the idea of having the bar upstairs, but I think functionality for us,
18:05it makes more sense for us to make that an office space.
18:08So we'll have a Murphy bed upstairs or a pull-out sofa, but something that is usable space up there
18:14in the event that we do have a guest over.
18:16Yeah.
18:17Just getting that space up there used beyond just when you have guests was my main concern.
18:22Yes.
18:23It sounds like you're heading in that direction.
18:24Well, we really appreciate all your thoughts and encouragement.
18:28And I think, again, we've gained a lot of wisdom.
18:31I expect nothing but the best because you guys are so talented.
18:34Oh, thanks so much.
18:35Awesome.
18:36Thank you so much.
18:37Good to see you guys.
18:38You too.
18:39We'll talk to you soon.
18:40So I operate a furniture business.
18:47After the fire, we moved our shop into the brick building.
18:50It's really been able to unlock my creative drive.
18:54There's so much going on, it's really hard to peel off right now and do a custom table.
18:59But I am actually really excited.
19:01I think the design is simple enough that we can pull it off in the amount of time that we have.
19:04And I really feel like a custom piece is what it needs.
19:06So I think it's going to be worth the extra time.
19:09We need to cut some biscuit slots.
19:16I'm going to glue the edge.
19:17Okay.
19:18And then I'll get a little glue inside there just to help hold our biscuits in place.
19:22And you can just drop a biscuit in there.
19:23Sweet.
19:24This is the fun, messy part.
19:32It's just such a special thing to me to have one of your pieces in the house.
19:37And I love that it's going to be simple.
19:40Okay, this one's going to come down, and then we're going to try to slide it right into
19:46the slots.
19:51We're going to be in there before the holidays, and so just the thought of us all sitting
19:55around a table that you made is so special.
19:57I can just picture big family gatherings around the table.
20:02That'll be a lot of fun.
20:03Okay, so then we can work on the base.
20:05Yep.
20:06Okay, I love it.
20:07Awesome.
20:08Thank you for the help.
20:09You're welcome.
20:10Thank you so much.
20:11Okay.
20:12So we're 12 weeks into the build, and we are now having to tear down the whole brick wall
20:25in the kitchen, so we can reframe it to coat.
20:29Not just cutting through brick, you're cutting through like four layers of brick.
20:32Yeah.
20:33Brick, and more brick, and brick dust, and more brick.
20:37It's all going to have to come down.
20:38And we've also started cutting in holes for our new bedroom windows, framing up bedroom
20:48walls, and building our floor-to-ceiling fireplace.
20:53So I found a cabinet for the bar.
21:00Oh, cool.
21:01It's super amazing.
21:02Like actual vintage piece?
21:03It is vintage.
21:04Okay.
21:05Yes.
21:06Since we're building a custom bar for the speakeasy, we need a cabinet that matches the brewery's
21:101890s vibe.
21:11Luckily, after weeks of searching, I found the perfect piece.
21:14So, let me show it to you.
21:18It's this.
21:19Oh, that's gorgeous.
21:20Isn't that beautiful?
21:21I love that.
21:22It's just under the size of the room.
21:25This right here is where I'm thinking that stained glass can go.
21:29Okay.
21:30So, can we pick it up now and then just get it up there before I do drywall?
21:35It's in LA, actually.
21:38Okay.
21:39Like LA, California?
21:41Yes.
21:42Los Angeles, California.
21:43That's over 1,300 miles away.
21:45I just think if we want this to, we're going to have to jump on it because it's a really
21:50good price.
21:51Okay.
21:52So...
21:53Ah, man.
21:54It's hard to commit to that.
21:56I've been looking for months, every day from here to like North and South Dakota even.
22:07It does seem perfect.
22:08So...
22:09Yeah.
22:10I'd say let's go ahead and do it.
22:11Okay.
22:12I guess we're road tripping.
22:13Okay.
22:14Better get your playlist going.
22:15I will.
22:22How do you feel about LA traffic?
22:24Loving it.
22:25Mm-hmm.
22:26I'm definitely at peace right now.
22:31I'm very sad.
22:34So, after a two-day journey, we finally made it to LA.
22:38But back in Montana, the crew is hard at work.
22:41Outside, they are repairing the foundation and starting the framing on the new garage.
22:49And then inside, our new fireplace is getting installed.
22:53So, I think we're finally ready to load up the bar cabinet for its long journey home.
22:59Okay.
23:00I'm actually really sad to see it wrapped right now.
23:03What do you think, babe?
23:04I love it.
23:05Are you still sad about missing a week of work, though?
23:08Not really.
23:09Not really.
23:10Okay.
23:11Look at that.
23:12But she's amazing.
23:13She's so pretty.
23:14I cannot wait to get this piece home and start modifying it so that we can make it into this piece that's going to be in our speakeasy.
23:20I think with a little hard work, it'll be the perfect piece to complement the historic brewery.
23:28So, we are back in Montana, and the cabinet survived the trip home on the trailer.
23:33And for the first time ever, we are painting the brick brewery, and we're installing our vintage windows.
23:50Wow.
23:52This looks great.
23:55Hey, Vern.
23:56Hey.
23:57You guys have been so, so busy.
24:00A little bit.
24:01Yeah, it looks a little bit different, doesn't it?
24:02I don't think painting this any other color would have worked quite as well.
24:07White highlights the shadow lines because it creates the most contrast, and now you can just see the incredible, beautiful architecture, all the different textures.
24:16It all just really stands out now.
24:18It was a very delightful surprise to see how much all the detail popped out.
24:22Now, the other thing that I'm noticing, windows.
24:25We were searching for some windows that had that historic character.
24:29I think these are just perfect.
24:31And it's already looking so good.
24:34I am dying to see the inside.
24:36I'm dying to show you, so let's go see it.
24:38All right.
24:39This is looking way more like a house up here than when you were here last time.
24:43Whoa!
24:44Oh, my goodness.
24:46Yes, it is.
24:47This was all the original brick, and it had to come out.
24:52Yes.
24:53Now that we have this big, giant, generous opening, it just sort of flows from one space to the next, which I think is really important.
25:00Then now we have our loft upstairs.
25:02This is going to be my office and a guest room.
25:05I think it's really cool.
25:06It's obviously going to have this natural light pouring through, which I think is wonderful.
25:10Well, I know we only got you for the day, so if we can, we've got a few projects lined up we're hoping that we could get you help with.
25:16We're going to put you to work, Vern.
25:18Everybody always wants free labor.
25:24All right, so this is the primary bathroom.
25:29I love it.
25:31Adding that window completely transforms this space.
25:35So much brighter, so much lighter.
25:37I mean, it's so great looking.
25:39Tell me about these beauties.
25:40Yeah, so these are from an old bank out of Portland, Oregon, right in between where the tellers would be.
25:47So we picked two of these up, and we're going to use them for our shower.
25:50They are massively, massively cool.
25:53We're going to waterproof them and then cover them with, like, a marine finish.
25:56Nice.
25:57So they're going to be totally waterproof.
25:58And then our vanity is wood, too.
26:01And our vanity is another salvage piece.
26:03So we want to make sure that it's not too much wood, you know?
26:07Yes.
26:08And this is your wood floor?
26:09Yes.
26:10This is going to go throughout the house.
26:11Okay.
26:12So tell me about what's happening here.
26:14So, okay, this is where my designer brain needs another designer brain because I can see both of these options in here.
26:20I cannot make a decision.
26:22Yeah.
26:23So I have a neutral option, which was my first choice.
26:26Then I saw this dark, moody option, and I really love it.
26:31I feel like this bathroom is such an opportunity to do something really fun.
26:35This fun, bright pattern on the shower floor, this one on the wall.
26:40What is this wall?
26:41This, my thought is to do some plaster.
26:44I wonder if we could make this a feature tile wall.
26:49I think it would be stunning.
26:51If we think about it that way, because you're getting so much great natural light.
26:55Mm-hmm.
26:56Oh, that would be stunning.
26:57I love this option.
26:59I think this is just stunning in here.
27:02Here is an opportunity for you to really have this be like a standout rig.
27:07Yeah.
27:08And I think that looks so pretty with your wood floor.
27:10Yeah.
27:11And I love that it contrasts this so much.
27:13Yes.
27:14So it really makes that pop.
27:15Yes, absolutely.
27:16And I really do love that.
27:18Tanner's not going to love it, because he's doing the tile.
27:20I'm doing him a solid.
27:21Wait till you see this cabinet.
27:26Tell me about what's going on here.
27:28This is actually going to be the cabinet that's in our new bar.
27:31It's right off the dining room.
27:32How does this piece of beautiful glass fit in?
27:35It has this gorgeous contact paper on the back of it.
27:38It almost gives it like a stained glass effect.
27:40And Tanner had the idea of using it as a backsplash in this cabinet.
27:45How can I help?
27:46All right.
27:47So first off, we've got to remove the guts.
27:49Okay.
27:50Let's go to work.
27:54All right.
27:55Good job.
27:56Okay.
27:57So now that we've got the guts removed here, we're going to attempt to cut the glass.
28:05Before we can cut it, though, we've got to remove it from the frame.
28:08Okay.
28:09So let's get this glazing off, right?
28:11Just be careful.
28:12We don't want to get cut.
28:15Okay.
28:16We got a piece out.
28:17Look at that.
28:18You guys did a great job.
28:19And it's still in one piece.
28:21So I'm very impressed.
28:22So far.
28:23No, it's all in one piece.
28:24It's going to stay in one piece.
28:25It was so nerve wracking having her just like watching like a hawk.
28:29So now what we'll need to do is use a glass cutter.
28:33He's just scoring it so that when we do snap it, that paper doesn't tear.
28:38All right, Varen.
28:39This is it.
28:40Okay.
28:41No pressure at all.
28:42No pressure at all.
28:43I'm not watching you, judging your every move, but I'm glad it's you and not me.
28:48We want to make sure we got some good pressure against here.
28:51And then we should just be able to snap.
28:55I can't watch.
28:57I don't need splintering.
29:00Yep.
29:01Yep.
29:02Dang it.
29:07That's all right.
29:08We have another one.
29:09Well, I think we already learned something today.
29:13We're not glass cutters.
29:15When you have creative minds like Tanner and Jana, you can really see their creativity go into overdrive.
29:22We're just going to take this little tool here and hopefully just a little bit of pressure.
29:26There you go.
29:27Look at that.
29:28Nice.
29:29Nice.
29:30Oh my goodness.
29:31Much better.
29:32I love that they're taking a vintage piece and they're not being too precious with it.
29:36I mean, it's not a priceless antique.
29:38So they're customizing it to make it their own, which I think is a great decision.
29:42Okay.
29:43So.
29:44Great job.
29:45Very nice.
29:46We're still able to use it.
29:47Yeah.
29:48This is actually going to get covered up by trim.
29:49Okay.
29:50And it kind of tucks up underneath the door the way we cut it.
29:53Yeah.
29:54We're going to be good.
29:55Oh my goodness.
29:56Oh wow.
29:57Oh yeah.
29:58That looks so good.
29:59That's so pretty.
30:00You know, again, I love the contrast of the slick and shiny and the polished against the
30:09roughness of the wood.
30:10I'll have candles or a lamp going, you know, in there and that'll just really kind of bring
30:14that color out too.
30:15So.
30:16Beautiful.
30:17Oh, I'm so excited.
30:18Thank you so much.
30:19I know that was nerve wracking.
30:20It was.
30:21Thank you for being the one.
30:22Yeah.
30:23No, great project guys.
30:24I love it.
30:25Well, this has been an amazing day, Vern.
30:35Got some projects done.
30:37Got some decisions made.
30:38Yeah.
30:39Oh my gosh.
30:40I am really, really impressed.
30:43So next time I see you, you will be a hundred percent done.
30:47Yeah.
30:48That's crazy.
30:49Now is the part where you just like racing to kind of finish it.
30:52Well, I have a small gift for you guys.
30:54So this is from 1954.
30:57Look at that.
30:58So this is an original stock certificate for the Kalispell Malting and Brewing Company.
31:02That's amazing.
31:03No way.
31:04Where did you find this?
31:05Okay.
31:06I have my ways.
31:07Wow.
31:08I love that.
31:09Oh, this is getting framed.
31:10Yeah.
31:11Thank you for this.
31:12You are so welcome.
31:13This is so special.
31:14I just felt like that belonged in your hands.
31:15This is amazing.
31:16Well, your support and encouragement and ideas have really helped us.
31:19Yeah.
31:20So thank you so much.
31:21Oh gosh, my pleasure.
31:23I look forward to seeing you when you've crossed the finish line.
31:24Yes.
31:25What a day.
31:26A ton of progress.
31:27Now is the part where they can begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
31:31I know they're going to be able to cross it successfully and I know it's going to be stunning.
31:35And there's so much happening.
31:49I was just here.
31:50I know.
31:51But every day you guys are really making.
31:52You kind of have to.
31:53I know.
31:54We've got a lot to do.
31:55I know.
31:56Not a lot of time to do it.
31:57Wow.
31:58That looks so good, babe.
31:59We got the trim up on this wall.
32:01Yes.
32:02It looks so good.
32:03This is.
32:04I can't wait to see it painted.
32:05Yeah.
32:06We got the fireplace in.
32:07Yep.
32:08We got.
32:09Wow.
32:10We got drywall up.
32:12Everything looks amazing.
32:15So we're seven months into our build with only two months until our winter deadline.
32:19So there is a ton of stuff happening all at once.
32:22We are finishing up the kitchen cabinets.
32:25Installing the appliances.
32:27Look at that is awesome.
32:30And we're putting the old fermentation sign into the archway that leads from the sunroom
32:35into the kitchen.
32:36Let's put it up.
32:37I really want to see it.
32:38Yeah, me too.
32:39We can hang it.
32:40That would be awesome.
32:41Okay.
32:42Cool.
32:43That's so perfect.
32:44Okay, the tile is here.
32:45Okay, there's a ton of tile.
32:46I'm sorry.
32:47I think you got enough tile.
32:48So you're helping me put this stuff up, right?
32:49I can.
32:50I can.
32:51I know Vern and I were very pumped about the idea of doing the tile on the wall.
32:55I'm putting you into work.
32:56Okay.
32:57Let's do it.
32:58So I know if I want it up that I'm going to have to help.
33:01I'm all in.
33:02All right.
33:03Let's put some tile up.
33:04Let's put some tile up.
33:05Okay.
33:06Let's put some tile up.
33:07Okay.
33:08Let's do it.
33:09Okay.
33:10Let's do it.
33:11So I know if I want it up that I'm going to have to help.
33:14I'm all in.
33:15All right.
33:16Let's put some tile up.
33:18Wow.
33:19Row one looks great.
33:21I know.
33:22Just like 10,000 more rows to go.
33:24Wipe a little thinset on the back and then hand it to me and I'll notch it and stick it up.
33:29Okay.
33:30You're trusting me to do this?
33:31All right.
33:32Oh, yeah.
33:33Okay.
33:34And we're going to embrace the imperfection.
33:36Is that too bad?
33:37I think we can make it work.
33:46How long do you think this will take to tile this whole wall?
33:50It's better to just not think about it.
33:53I have no idea what the exact square footage of the wall is because I just don't want to
33:58know at this point.
33:59We've got like 10 gazillion tiles.
34:00But you can see how beautiful it's going to be.
34:03Yeah.
34:04Looks great.
34:05I think we need to add in some throw pillows.
34:12We have been working on this renovation for eight months.
34:16We were really trying to get this done before winter.
34:19And we just barely made it.
34:22I think adding in maybe some of the candlesticks that we have too would be really good.
34:26Yeah, I actually really like those.
34:28I'm so excited to get in there and decorate and really show our personality.
34:32Make it feel like a home.
34:33Give it some warmth and texture and coziness in there.
34:40I'm very excited about sharing this with Vern and seeing what he thinks.
34:55Hi, Vern.
34:56Hey.
34:57This looks incredible.
35:00Yeah.
35:01This was a very difficult thing to pull off.
35:04You took something that was never intended to be a home.
35:07This was a brewery.
35:08Yep.
35:09It was a challenge, but I'm hoping we pulled it off.
35:11Oh my gosh.
35:12You hit the bullseye.
35:13Absolutely.
35:14I love everything that's out here.
35:16It's a significant change.
35:17Yes.
35:18This brick pathway, this is actually the original brick that Tanner and the guys pulled out of
35:23the wall in the kitchen.
35:24It is so beautiful from the outside.
35:26I can only imagine how stunning it is on the inside.
35:29I'm dying to show you, so let's go see it.
35:31All right.
35:32I know.
35:33I know.
35:34Wow.
35:35Wow.
35:36It's a whole lot different in here.
35:37It's unbelievable.
35:38This is so airy.
35:39And the volume, it's tremendous.
35:40Even though you have these big, huge, soaring ceilings, it just feels so warm and inviting.
35:58Now, something that I didn't quite expect is how lovely these wood floors were going to be.
36:04Yes.
36:05They add so much warmth to the space.
36:07Huge difference between this and concrete.
36:09It's crazy to think that a little over 100 years ago there were guys in here pushing barrels of beer around.
36:16It no longer feels like it was a brewery space.
36:20It feels now like a home.
36:22That's exactly what we hoped for.
36:24Yes.
36:25There are so many beautiful elements to this living room, but I think perhaps my favorite is the fireplace.
36:30Mine, too.
36:31It felt like it needed a grand option, so we went with the biggest insert that we could find.
36:37What I really love about what's happening here with the fireplace is that we have this very smooth plaster work that's been added, and I love it.
36:45It's exactly what you needed to kind of warm the space up and make it really feel like a home.
36:50So part of this space is used as a dining room, too, and the really cool thing is that Tanner made the table that fits perfectly in this space.
36:57We had a very tight time frame to be able to build this in, so fortunately Janet chose a design that was very simple.
37:03Yeah.
37:04Simpler design, but still a lot of detail.
37:06Well, you know, there's a lot to see in this space, and so we didn't really want it to pull away from it, but just to kind of complement it, and I think it worked well.
37:14Oh my gosh, it's so cool. Are we still calling this the speakeasy?
37:21Yes, we are.
37:23Oh, wow.
37:24I know.
37:25It turned out beautifully.
37:28This cabinet is phenomenal.
37:31There's your glass.
37:32Yeah.
37:33With the glass.
37:34It's even more beautiful now because you've customized it to make it your own.
37:37We love little, like, surprising moments around the corner.
37:39We thought the most appropriate place for our stock certificate that you gave us was in this new speakeasy.
37:46What better place to contemplate and take stock of all of your good fortune?
37:52Yes.
37:53Well, are you ready to see the kitchen?
37:55Absolutely. Let's go.
37:56Okay.
37:57But before we get in there, we just have to take a moment to admire the fact that there was a giant brick wall here, and it is no longer there.
38:06That brick wall was kind of limiting, and one of the things that we were really wanting to achieve was this big, broad connection between the kitchen and the main living space, which I think you have in spades.
38:18I think so, too, and I am so excited to finally have an office space and a guest room as well.
38:25Wow.
38:26Yeah.
38:27Very, very cool.
38:28And these windows are tall enough that you can actually see the view from out there.
38:31Okay.
38:32Let's get into the kitchen.
38:33Yes, let's go see the kitchen.
38:35Again, in here, there's just a lot of natural materials, which I just love because it's going to age beautifully just like the building has.
38:46A brewery was clearly never intended to have a kitchen, especially one as magnificent as this one, but you have really made it feel like it was always here.
38:56It's just all the details that kind of contribute to that feeling, the countertops, the floor selection, the cabinetry, the range, even the cabinet hardware selection.
39:07And, you know, it all maybe isn't exactly from that time period, but it feels like it could have been.
39:13We had talked about kind of preserving the old fermentation sign that used to be part of that brick wall that got torn down. Did you save the sign?
39:22Yeah, actually, you can see it right over here.
39:24All right, Vern, this is the sunroom.
39:27Wow.
39:30What a great view.
39:32It's just like mountains everywhere you look.
39:34And we can catch the sunrise and the sunset on both sides.
39:38Okay.
39:39This might officially be my favorite space.
39:41And if you turn around and look up, that's where the fermentation seller sign ended up going.
39:46Oh, that's great.
39:48You are adding a lot of additional things to make it a home.
39:52So these original details really remind you of the history of the building, right?
39:56Absolutely.
39:59This is our bedroom.
40:00Oh, I mean, how do you feel about it?
40:04I love it.
40:05I love being surrounded by the brick.
40:07And we were finally able to reuse these old windows that we had salvaged.
40:12We've had those for years, and finally getting to put them in is awesome.
40:17So I'm guessing the primary bathroom's also done?
40:21Yes.
40:22Oh, yes.
40:23You've got to see it.
40:24Okay.
40:27Oh.
40:30I love how neutral the whole house is.
40:33But, like, when you get in here, you get this full expression of floor-to-ceiling tile,
40:38which I know was really easy to put in.
40:41Fortunately, I had a lot of help, so that definitely made it easier.
40:45And I actually love the way this turned out.
40:48All the green, it's fantastic.
40:50I think the banker's panels, such a great original idea that I haven't seen anywhere else.
40:56The vanity is beautiful.
40:58I love the vintage pieces that you've added.
41:00You guys really have exceptional taste.
41:04What a tour.
41:08You knocked it out of the park.
41:11You've poured your time and energy into converting this very industrial old brewery into something that feels now like a home.
41:19We really value all your suggestions and your help and support along the way.
41:25So thank you so much.
41:26Totally my pleasure.
41:27Thank you for letting me be a part of it.
41:28Yes.
41:29You know what?
41:30Our home is always open to you.
41:31One of my huge takeaways from this project is that you can't make a home feel tailored to you and personal and layered overnight.
41:43They are collectors.
41:45They have amassed beautiful things over a long period of time.
41:49Wow.
41:50What that's allowed them to do is instantly transform this renovation into something that feels like it's been here forever.
41:57Okay, check out this little secret area over here.
41:59Our boys are so pumped about this house.
42:02There's so much space for them to explore.
42:04It was a real push at the end.
42:06I just feel so blessed to be able to spend time with the family and really enjoy this space.
42:11The countertops are amazing.
42:12I know.
42:13I do really, really love it.
42:15It's the heart of the house right here.
42:16It is.
42:17I always say that your home is the most important space for you and your family.
42:24It's where the most important moments of your life unfold.
42:27Wow.
42:28I know.
42:29Isn't it so pretty?
42:30Yeah.
42:31I am just beyond thrilled for Jenna and Tanner that they have created this incredibly special, very personal family home,
42:39where they're going to be making many, many happy memories.
42:42I cannot believe that it's done.
42:44We're going to move in.
42:45Right?
42:46I know.
42:47Let me hug.
42:48Oh!
42:49Ah!
42:50No!
42:51No!
42:52No!
42:53No!
42:54No!
42:55No!
