00:00As an instrument in any band, you can already play a conch horn.
00:05You ready? Yeah, I'm ready.
00:06Okay, all right, watch your ears, just a little.
00:08Go on.
00:11It's like a shit.
00:12Yeah, take a breath.
00:14You're so good at that.
00:14I've been doing it a very long time.
00:16We all learn as little kids how to play the conch horn.
00:19Everything here is very conch-centric.
00:23You're telling me.
00:24And now someone else wants to get in on the conch craze.
00:29Can I have a go?
00:30I want to have a little go.
00:31I'll have music.
00:31Absolutely.
00:32That one is for you.
00:33This one's for me.
00:36There you go.
00:37So good.
00:38He's got it now.
00:40First time, it was all right, wasn't it?
00:41First time, right?
00:42Absolutely.
00:42I knew it.
00:44I can see Aiden's come out of his shell.
00:47The Hammonds are here.
00:50So that is my gift to y'all.
00:52You can take that home.
00:54Oh, my God.
00:55Don't give him that gift.
00:57I wouldn't have no peace in quiet when I come out.
00:59Oh, my God.
01:00Put it inside your carry-on luggage.
01:01It's the worst present ever.
01:06Clinton's suddenly going down, in my estimation.
01:10But he could turn it around with some top local tips.
01:13So we're here all day.
01:15What would you recommend we do?
01:16Everyone that comes here, you want to get on the water.
01:19Go to some of the great restaurants.
01:21Try Key Lime Pie.
01:22Oh, yes.
01:23So from sun up to sun down, there is something for everybody.
01:28I love it.
01:30Hold up.
01:31Did he just say pie?
01:32Oh, my.
01:34Sounds like we've got a fun day ahead of us.
01:36But first, I'm going to ride this trolley for all it's worth.
01:40I'm well on board with this, babes.
01:42It's like a little toy town, isn't it?
01:46It's so cute.
01:48Key West, here we go.
01:51It's 50 bucks for one day's unlimited travel.
01:54But that also gets you two guided walking tours and entry to a local museum.
02:00And to top it off, they give you a book of coupons for local restaurants.
02:05Oh, I love a coupon.
02:06Who doesn't?
02:07Plus, up here, we can float above the streets,
02:10safe in the knowledge that our parking isn't about to run out.
02:14Win-win.
02:16And we all have a new wedding day.
02:18Pretty good.
02:19Yeah.
02:20And can we just hear it for our tour guide?
02:22He's so friendly.
02:24Takes me back to my days as a holiday rep,
02:27picking up passengers from the airport.
02:29I love getting on that mic.
02:32First stop, a Key West landmark.
02:35The furthest south you can possibly get
02:38in the whole of the continental U.S. of A.
02:41So, the southernmost point buoy,
02:43just here to your right-hand side.
02:45Oh, look at that.
02:4590 miles to Cuba.
02:47Just 90 miles?
02:48Yeah, just 90 miles across the Florida Straits.
02:51And as you can see,
02:52it's a very popular location to have your picture taken.
02:55There's a queue?
02:56Yeah, there's a queue almost every day.
02:58One of the most sought-after photos on the island.
03:01That's unbelievable.
03:02Great spot.
03:03We Brits are drawn to a queue like moths to a flame.
03:12And I'm not going to miss an opportunity for a selfie.
03:15That would be madness.
03:17We can't go without getting our selfie, can we, Bab?
03:19No, we can't.
03:20We're here now.
03:21In truth, this isn't even the southernmost point in the U.S. of A.
03:26That's actually around the corner on an off-limits naval base.
03:30But let's not let that get in the way of a good photo opportunity.
03:34Look at her, she's really going for a pose.
03:36Shall I show everyone my music?
03:37No, please don't.
03:39Don't be so embarrassed.
03:39Oh, no, don't.
03:40We're going to lock horns if this carries on.
03:45It's so embarrassing.
03:50Right, let's show them how it's done.
03:5290 miles from Cuba.
03:58Gracias.
04:01Got it.
04:04Surprising fact, Key West is actually closer to Havana than Miami.
04:09Before the highway was built and long before the Cuban Revolution,
04:13it was easier for locals to sail south to Havana than travel north to Miami.
04:19Lovely.
04:19Amazing.
04:20Sorted.
04:21Let's go.
04:22You are so funny.
04:32With Key West being an island,
04:35one of the best ways to enjoy it is to get out onto the crystal clear waters.
04:40Which, if you're not careful, can cost a fortune.
04:44Boat trips and water sports are pastimes you pay a premium for here.
04:49Especially if you're not part of a group,
04:51where you can split the cost.
04:52You could go solo and snorkel at Fort Zachary Park.
04:57But there are ways to get out on the water where you don't have to push the boat out.
05:04Well, you do, obviously, but not financially, at least.
05:08Good morning.
05:09I'm Captain Brian. How are you?
05:10Nice. You're a hugger.
05:11Yeah.
05:11You are, yes.
05:12This boat trip is not costing us a dime, because me and Aidan are volunteering for the army.
05:20The Marine Army.
05:22Nice boat.
05:23We're talking trash babes, offering our services to help clean the ocean.
05:30Do you need any help?
05:33Let's go.
05:34The Conquer Republic Marine Army is a team of volunteers who are taking action to clean up the Florida Keys' waters.
05:43We call it making friends in trashy places.
05:45Anyone can join in, as long as you're willing to get a little bit wet.
05:51I've got it. I've got it. I've got it. I've got it. I've got it. I've got it.
05:54Nice.
05:57You can take that home.
05:58It's in trash. Yeah.
06:01It might not look like there's too much phloxam and jetsam on the surface here.
06:05I'll get it.
06:06I think you can.
06:07Right?
06:08Yeah, right hand side, yeah.
06:09All right.
06:10Get in trash.
06:12I've got it.
06:12Yeah, two.
06:14But these guys are removing rubbish on an industrial level, relying solely on local goodwill to make it happen.
06:22We're going to be selling pool noodles at the end of the day for $5 to raise money.
06:28Every month, the volunteers pull out four truckloads of junk.
06:31They're on track for 20 tonnes this year alone.
06:35That wraps up around a propeller.
06:38That'd be a bad day.
06:39Much of it down to the ever more frequent storms battering the Florida Keys.
06:46Oh, it's a big ball.
06:47Look at that.
06:49There's still more.
06:51Brian, I'm actually quite shocked at how much rubbish is coming out of this ocean.
06:56Look at all this rope.
06:57This is called trap line, which is rope that attaches the buoy to the lobster or crab trap.
07:04And in storms like hurricanes, they all get torn to shreds and distributed.
07:08And we have about a million of these pots in the Florida Keys in the water.
07:12And about 15% of them get cut off.
07:15And no one has ever cleaned up the Florida Keys like what we're trying to do.
07:18It's unbelievable.
07:19How did this all start off with you, Brian?
07:21It was Hurricane Irma in 2017.
07:24It came through in September.
07:25And it destroyed our home.
07:28And you needed a way to vent.
07:30And an easy way to vent was to find a couple of sofas that were in the water.
07:34And I said, I'm just going to go get one of those out.
07:36So I made a Facebook post.
07:37And 25 people showed up to help me go get that sofa.
07:40So I made another post saying, let's do it again.
07:42And four weeks later, I had 125 people show up just looking for something different to do than live in misery.
07:48And then since then, we've pulled out 250 tons of trash, 94 refrigerators, which is crazy, numerous Cuban chugs, one kilo of cocaine, and a couple of messages in a bottle.
08:01So we've done 54 miles of the shoreline very clean.
08:04There's 900 more to go.
08:06So we're not even at 10%.
08:07Wow.
08:08So this is a mega problem.
08:09Everyone agrees that cleaning up our environment here in the Keys is the number one priority.
08:13Our water quality is what we live on.
08:15No one visits here for the cheap rent and the fresh fruits and vegetables, as I say.
08:19It's for the weather and for the water.
08:21And if we don't have that, you know, why come?
08:23Has this changed your life, Brian?
08:25Amazingly.
08:25There's nothing better, honestly.
08:26This is a much better way of spending the day than the normal touristy things, in my opinion.
08:31Yeah, I agree.
08:31And I get the benefit because I meet all kinds of people like you.
08:34And here we are.
08:35You and I are making friends for life.
08:36Yes, definitely.
08:37I'm family now, Bob.
08:38I'm in this Marine army forever.
08:40Yes, you are.
08:43And I'm not alone.
08:44Numbers have now swelled to a massive 5,000 volunteers, all willing to get into deep water
08:51to do their bit for the local environment.
08:54You did a good job.
08:58The great thing about this, as well as having no impact on my wallet, is that the whole family
09:04can get involved.
09:06There you go.
09:08A piece of tar.
09:08There's one of our little creatures here saying thank you for picking up this habitat.
09:14That's so cute.
09:15That's one of our local residents here.
09:17He wanted to say thank you for picking up all this trash and trapping it out of the water.
09:20You can't play that one, Aide.
09:23That is fun.
09:24That is what I'm safely back in his environment.
09:26Put him back in his home.
09:27Thank you very much.
09:27All cleaned up.
09:28As well as the feel-good factor and the fact that it's free, one of the other perks is you
09:35get lunch thrown in too, as a reward for your efforts.
09:41We're going to go right in here to this little cove.
09:44And if you look over there, there's a big white, looks like a sail.
09:46I can see it.
09:47From a sailboat.
09:47And it looks pretty big.
09:48And it doesn't belong there, so let's go get it out.
09:50Let's go do it.
09:50Time to get stuck in.
09:54We're going to sink down just a little bit when you get there.
09:57It's not terrible.
09:58It's not, it's not.
09:58Let's help, Mama.
10:00Yeah.
10:00The queen.
10:01I think I'm going to get left.
10:02It is what it wants.
10:03It is.
10:04Yeah, just go slow.
10:05Just go really slow.
10:07Am I in it?
10:08Yeah.
10:09Quite literally.
10:11Oh, I've gone really low.
10:12Yeah, same.
10:13My foot is still.
10:14That's right, come on.
10:15Pull it.
10:15Just move it up gently.
10:17I was the same.
10:18I was the same.
10:19I got some trash.
10:24Oh, there's loads of bugs on it.
10:26Yeah.
10:26The thing is, once you start, you can't stop.
10:29One bottle, Brian.
10:31Nice.
10:31Got any other trash?
10:32There's a lot of rope left in here.
10:33Any more plastic in there?
10:35Lovely.
10:37Alison, how you doing?
10:38Look at this one.
10:39Oh, yeah.
10:42I'm not going to lie.
10:44It's not exactly glamorous, but getting down and dirty is kind of liberated.
10:50Do you know what?
10:50I'm actually really enjoying this.
10:52It also gives you more of appreciation about when people throw rubbish away.
10:58You know what?
10:58It could end up in this beautiful, beautiful spot.
11:03And we don't want that.
11:05No, no, no.
11:06These guys are working so hard.
11:08All these volunteers are working so hard.
11:11They're not the only ones.
11:14Hey, Alison, look at Aiden.
11:15He's addicted now to getting trash.
11:18It's bizarre, the things we found.
11:21Nice job, buddy.
11:23That's getting it done.
11:25Good work, guys.
11:27Well done, son.
11:29Well done, darling.
11:31You've just done so well.
11:32I know.
11:32There was so much trash.
11:35It's just constantly...
11:35Yeah, it's mad, isn't it?
11:36I can't believe it gets caught up here.
11:38I mean, we found...
11:39I found a lemon squeezer.
11:41Did you?
11:42It's so random.
11:43Let me take that home.
11:43A gas can.
11:44Yeah.
11:45And a gas can, yeah.
11:46Really random stuff.
11:47But it was good fun.
11:48I enjoyed it.
11:49And you're giving something back.
11:50It's so good.
11:51Well done, babes.
11:53I'm really proud of you.
11:54It's a lovely feeling, actually, cleaning up.
11:56I was going to say, how are you feeling here?
11:58Really good in my heart, actually, yeah.
11:59It's a lovely thing to do.
12:03Sure, you can splash the cash
12:05and experience more luxury on the water.
12:08But this is so much more satisfying.
12:11And between us, me and Aide
12:13collected over 14 pounds of trash.
12:16So many bottles, pool noodles,
12:19and that lemon squeezer.
12:21And this sense of island community spirit
12:23is really starting to come across.
12:31There's a saying the locals use on this island
12:33that pretty much sums them up.
12:36We're all here because we're not all there.
12:39Key West has always been a place
12:41where larger-than-life characters
12:42can feel right at home.
12:45Over the years,
12:46the island's all-embracing lifestyle
12:48has inspired some colourful eccentrics
12:50to put down roots.
12:52From Tennessee Williams
12:53to Jimmy Buffett,
12:55who wrote Margaritaville.
12:57But perhaps its most famous resident
12:59was America's literary legend.
13:02The Nobel Prize winning
13:04heavy drinking
13:05deep-sea fishing
13:07bar-brawling genius
13:09Ernest Hemingway.
13:11Or just Papa to his fans.
13:14For just $18,
13:15you can visit the house he called home,
13:18now a museum
13:19with guided tours included.
13:23Legend has it,
13:24Hemingway loved to frequent
13:26the bars along Duval Street,
13:28especially this one.
13:30So how does Key West
13:32celebrate its connection
13:33to such greatness?
13:35Well, in typical Key West style,
13:37by gathering every Hemingway
13:39look-alike on the planet.
13:42Sloppy Joe's has been
13:44in this location for 87 years,
13:46and for 43 of those years,
13:49we've hosted
13:49the Hemingway look-alike contest
13:51where guys show up
13:52from around the world
13:54to say,
13:55I want to be the next top man.
13:57That's a hell of a lot
13:58of facial hair.
13:59Local resident Tim Stockwell
14:01is one of Key West's
14:03keenest competitors.
14:04I was sitting at this very bar,
14:07and somebody came up and said,
14:08are you here for the contest?
14:09And I didn't know anything
14:10about the contest.
14:11I said, what contest?
14:13So they brought down
14:13the application for me.
14:15Great then, I filled it out,
14:17and made it to the finals
14:18my first year.
14:20So I've been to the finals
14:21all five years,
14:22I've been to the contest,
14:23and I made it in the top five
14:25twice.
14:26So you never know,
14:27next year could be a good year.
14:29The competition is stiff,
14:30mind you,
14:31with look-alikes identified
14:33all over,
14:34from New Zealand
14:35to Norway.
14:36What you have
14:37is a lot of eccentric guys
14:38showing up for this,
14:39right?
14:39And they want to show
14:40their flair.
14:41So we come with guys
14:42that have bullhorns
14:43through their shirts
14:44with blood all over it.
14:45We have people come
14:46in all kinds of
14:47safari outfits.
14:48One year,
14:49we had a guy show up
14:50in a diaper.
14:52You never know
14:53what you're going to see
14:53show up on that stage
14:54for heavyweight days.
14:56And as well as
14:57entertaining the locals,
14:58this zany contest
15:00raises over $100,000
15:02each year
15:03towards scholarships
15:04for students
15:05in the Florida Keys.
15:06I think that Papa
15:08would have loved the fact
15:09that we're giving away
15:10a lot of money
15:11to keep people here
15:11in his beloved
15:12Key West
15:13in the Florida Keys.
15:14But what would the great man
15:16have made of this island today?
15:19I think what he would
15:20particularly like
15:21about Key West now
15:22is it has kept
15:23its eccentricity,
15:25the tolerance
15:26for being eccentric
15:27and outrageous
15:28or being who you want to be
15:30is,
15:31it thrives here.
15:34Almost as famous
15:35Mrs. Hemingway
15:36is another
15:37Key West classic.
15:38Something else
15:39we've been told
15:40not to miss
15:40while we're here.
15:42As if.
15:45I'm so excited
15:46and I'm so glad
15:47that Clinton said
15:48that we've got to
15:49try Key Lime Pie.
15:50That's why I brought you here.
15:52What?
15:52Pepe's?
15:52Award winning
15:53Key Lime Pie.
15:55You are.
15:55Well if it's award winning
15:56it's good for me.
15:57Come on.
15:59You can't come to
16:00Key West
16:01and not try
16:02Key Lime Pie.
16:03It would be like
16:05going to Brom
16:05and not having a
16:06Balti
16:07or Cornwall
16:08without devouring
16:09a pasty.
16:11There's a chicken behind you.
16:13Even the local
16:14chickens want to
16:15get in on the action.
16:16Ha ha!
16:17If you wanted to
16:18save a few dollars
16:19you could get them
16:20as take out
16:21and eat them
16:22on the beach
16:22or in the park.
16:24But these guys
16:25have been making
16:26Key Lime Pie
16:27for almost
16:27a hundred years.
16:28And the Key Lime King
16:31is Danny.
16:33Hello good people.
16:34How are y'all doing?
16:35Hi.
16:35We're good.
16:36How are you?
16:36Hello Danny.
16:37It's wonderful to see you
16:39dear.
16:39Oh lovely to see you.
16:41How are you?
16:42Like a new pair of pants
16:43ready to rip.
16:44Okay.
16:45I heard there's no calories
16:47in your Key Lime Pie.
16:47There's absolutely no.
16:48Is that true?
16:49There's another Key Lime Pie.
16:51No.
16:52I'm not going to say that.
16:53There's a lot of calories.
16:54We make it fresh.
16:56So it's.
16:57Can we get two of them?
16:58That's why I brought my mum here.
17:00I wanted us to try
17:00the Key Lime Pie.
17:01Well guess what friend?
17:03I think we can make
17:03this happen.
17:04Are you going to join us?
17:06I actually will join you.
17:08Yeah come on.
17:09Let's Key Lime Pie.
17:10Do we just need one
17:10and then three spoons?
17:12If you'd like to

17:26The creamy biscuity delight
17:28is said to have started
17:29here in Key West
17:30back in the late 1800s.
17:34Made with the tiny
17:35yellowish Key Limes
17:36grown here.
17:37It was a no bait treat
17:39that early settlers
17:40whipped up
17:41with whatever they had
17:42on hand.
17:43Fishermen even took
17:44the pies out to sea
17:45for a sweet pick me up.
17:48Yep.
17:48Sometimes the oldies
17:49really are the goodies.
17:52Inform your cardiologist.

19:02a tip off about
19:03another quirky perk
19:04in this restaurant.
19:05Just found out

19:08it gives free
19:10international calls
19:11so I thought
19:11you know what
19:12I'm going to call my sister
19:13but I've only got
19:13three minutes to do it in.
19:15This was introduced
19:16for the locals.
19:18I hope that's a number.
19:22What's wrong?
19:22When it was the only
19:24phone working
19:25on the whole island
19:26during a hurricane
19:26it was the only way
19:29to keep in touch
19:30with family.
19:31Hello?
19:32Sandra it's Alison.

20:19here in Key West.
20:20Oh Sandra.
20:25She's a bit like Key West
20:26my sister.
20:27Eccentric and welcoming.
20:31As the light starts to fade
20:33there's one more sight
20:35we need to see.
20:36And it doesn't cost a dime.
20:40Mallory Square
20:41is where the locals
20:42and tourists meet up
20:43to celebrate
20:44what people say
20:45is one of the best
20:46sunsets in America.
20:47And if you're expecting
20:50serene and spiritual
20:51think again.
20:54This is something else.
20:57There's a carnival atmosphere
20:59every day.
21:02We just need to get
21:03the low down
21:03on the sundown
21:04from local musician Mike.
21:06What on earth
21:09is happening here?
21:10There's so many people
21:11it's like a big
21:11massive party.
21:12Every night
21:13seven days a week
21:14if that sun's going down
21:15people are here
21:16there's vendors
21:17there's performers
21:18playing music
21:18then the sunset's
21:20just a cherry
21:20on top of the ice cream.
21:22All day we've been
21:22asking people
21:23why do they love
21:24Key West so much?
21:25Why do you love it?
21:26The people.
21:27The people make it
21:28what it is.
21:28The people bring that energy
21:29that spirit to the town.
21:31If you need help
21:31they got you.
21:32The weather's great
21:33the food's amazing
21:34but the people
21:34are what make
21:35Key West Key West.
21:36Beautiful.
21:37Aw that's lovely that is.
21:40You know what?
21:41I think Mike's nailed it.
21:43We came to Key West
21:45wanted to know
21:46why this tiny island
21:47at the very bottom
21:48of Florida
21:49draws so many
21:50to its shores
21:51and why they never
21:53seem to want to leave.
21:55I feel like
21:56we already know
21:57why people keep
21:58coming back to this place.
21:59I mean look at that.
22:01What a sunset.
22:01I feel like
22:02that's one of the
22:03main reasons
22:03why they come back.
22:04Have you noticed
22:05how happy
22:06everybody is as well?
22:08Everyone's loving it.
22:09Everyone's happy
22:09taking photos.
22:10And they're so proud
22:11to show off
22:12Key West aren't they?
22:13They really are.
22:13They want to talk about it.
22:14They love their city.
22:15I totally get it now.
22:17You can see why
22:17people here have a blast.
22:21There you go.

22:23They don't take
22:24themselves too seriously.
22:27And they definitely
22:28eat well.
22:29Are you still
22:32thinking about
22:32that key lime pie?

22:38has captured my heart.
22:40Key West has shown
22:41that sometimes
22:42the best things in life
22:44really are free.
22:49And as the sun sets
22:51across the Florida
22:52Straits.
