00:00We're at the San Diego Zoo at the giant panda exhibit and we are working on ultrasounds of
00:14Bayeun, our female giant panda, to assess for pregnancy. With the training that Bayeun goes
00:26through with the trainers, she makes the process incredibly easy for us. It could
00:31be very difficult but she is incredibly well trained and works with us a
00:36significant amount. She allows for us to ultrasound while she lays on her back and
00:42works with her trainers.
00:50Pandas when they're pregnant or they can also develop something called pseudo
00:54pregnancy, their behaviors change and they act very much like they're pregnant
00:57when they're in a pseudo pregnancy. So it's difficult to tell just based on
01:01behavior and some of their clinical signs if they are actually pregnant or just
01:05going through a pseudo pregnancy.
01:08So we'll continue to ultrasound a few times a week until we can confirm a
01:13pregnancy or confirm that she's not pregnant. If we do confirm a pregnancy a
01:18lot of times we'll increase those ultrasound to daily just to monitor
01:21health of that fetus development.
