00:32resume and be terrible 30 year old parker schnabel is leaning on his crew like never before after
00:40years of running the cuts himself he's testing his top lieutenant's ability to lead mitch and
00:47brennan are getting sulfur ready to go we'll have the wash plant firing up there very soon
00:51we have two wash plants already running here on dominion bob and slucifer
01:00two weeks into the season and with only 400 ounces parker wants his 40-person crew firing on old
01:09cylinders to bring in a big haul this week and put him on track for his 10 000 ounce season goal we do
01:17have a big crew this year you know a bunch of new people tyson has a lot of training to do people
01:24need to understand what the expectations are and when they're doing things wrong and if they can't
01:28correct it then we just we need to get rid of it which is always a challenge
01:37parker's given me more and more responsibility this year from last year it's probably about three times as
01:44much we have so many new people and with parker still expecting more than double productivity
01:53as last year that's a large ask from a lot of new people parker's charged rising star tyson lee
02:02with overseeing the huge dominion creek operation where two cuts are already producing gold
02:08the bridge cut and the recently opened golden mile which parker believes could deliver big numbers
02:17if the crew keeps it running
02:21hopefully the new people have an understanding of what we expect and what we need out of them
02:26here as a mining outfit and we're figuring out their caliber
02:30right now we have michael digging pay down by bob and the bridge cut the cuts looking hella nice
02:39clearly parker's not around he's going for a big season this year the size of his operation that's
02:45massive new recruit mike thompson is a veteran gold miner with years of experience operating heavy
02:53machinery so i did five years at a neighbor mine park offered me this job and very hard to say no to
03:00tyson's also relying on another new hire to keep the bridge cut gold coming in i have amy learning how
03:07to run loader right now she's feeding bob and i want to throw a bunch of stuff at her with the wash plant
03:14so for the last three days i have been doing some training and today is my first day on my own
03:38going from being a teacher just half a month ago it's going to be a big transition
03:49greenhorn amy lee traded a career as a science teacher to become a gold miner
03:57taylor and tatiana are my besties tatiana actually trained me in a rock truck which was amazing we had
04:05such a good time and then on day two they just let me loose on my own and that was that after proving
04:13herself tyson is putting amy in charge of one of the most important jobs feeding pay dirt into the wash
04:20plant how's it going amy good you pretty good good how you finding things now that i've gotten over a
04:31little bit of the fear after a couple hours it's getting better that's good i'd like to do a once
04:37over the plant with you and just kind of give you some things to look at awesome so there's this tail
04:42drum up here so you can see how it's nice and clean yeah that's how it should always be yeah if
04:48the belt walks left or right that can be an issue when you're feeding the wash plant a rock gets stuck
04:54on the belt and i've had it cut the belt clean in half like a razor blade before yeah if you think
05:01something is wrong yeah just shut it down okay let's run up here yeah open this rip on this
05:09that's the breaker then run up there open the bypass close the main any questions not at this moment
05:17just to spawn yeah let me just absorb yeah you absorbed it all still a little bit like holy yeah

05:31when you think of all the responsibility you have and you're the sole person of watching the plant it
05:39plays on your mind a little bit
05:41i'm really happy with amy i can't wait to see what she can do this season

05:56i'm getting flooded out i'm on my way last thing i want to do is tell parker that the cut's flooded
06:04and we got to shut bob down man that's a lot of melt water that's not what i needed man
06:14we have a lake in here we spend so much time getting the bridge cut drain it's getting flooded
06:19out again the water's backing up the ditch line of the cut i'm thinking that eight inch culvert's not
06:26big enough oh yeah we need to rattle your hoe over and dig up this road we got that big old culvert up
06:31there so let's throw that puppy in let's uh get this water out here
06:40so we got to get this water out because right now the only pay we can truck to bob
06:45is in this square if it's flooding out bob's gonna shut down
06:50as the 114 acre bridge cut thaws melt water seeps into its drainage ditches where it is then
06:57channeled through an eight inch culvert under bob's only access road but the narrow culvert is
07:05overwhelmed by the volume of melt water causing the ditches to overflow and flood the cut to stop the
07:12flood mike must dig up the access road and replace the small culvert with a much larger 36-inch culvert
07:21then rebuild the road to wash plant bob
07:27i'm gonna take the small little eight inch culvert up and let the water go if i don't hurry up and
07:32get this water figured out bob's gonna run out of pain that's bad news you ain't sluicing you ain't producing
07:38so here comes some water boys
07:52let's go get this culvert let's the only thing i got kicking around here so hopefully i can do the job

09:09what what an hour hour and five minutes we got her done well you know michael sure stepped up to the
09:16plate and saved the day he got that culvert in got all the water leaving us he executed it perfectly
09:22we just got to keep the gold coming in
09:36gold prices are up there so we decided to get with the program right out of the bed
09:53we were the first ones sluicing in the yukon
09:56the early board cut is done so now we're going to expand it 10 miles southwest king of the klondike
10:05tony beats has already mined out his first cut
10:09holding in 632 ounces of his 6 500 ounce target
10:15since we had a nice early start now the trick is going to be a stay ahead of the game so we can't let
10:28up after a hot start on his indian river claim tony's nearly out of pay dirt and he needs to open
10:39more ground at the early bird cut fast so what i want to do is strip here 100 feet wide all the way
10:50to the other end so they can take all this gravel load it up dump it in the old cut so
10:56we get people on the go down here just like parker tony's also relying on a crew of new recruits
11:04to get the job done we're going to have another 40 more people this year so you got to make do
11:11with whatever you can get and then hope it turns out okay well this is my first year here who wouldn't
11:19want to come to the yukon and work i love it here i love the chaos we've got a lot of equipment packed
11:27in in here weaving together rock truck drivers tyler swan and sam moore are part of an all-new
11:34crew tasked with getting the early bird extension down to pay in just one week i'm pretty new to
11:42gold mining i've only been at this for a little over a month now and there's very rarely a dull moment
11:50tony's approach throw the newbies in at the deep end and hope they can swim get the out of the way and
11:58get another rock truck that out of the way so this will get out of the way make some room
12:04i mean you got two trucks if they can't find their own way this rock truck come back in there

14:33before wash plant sluice a lot's pay pile runs out but rookie driver sam has flipped his rock truck
14:41bringing the operation to a halt
14:43the game plans uh go up to use the 480 if it'll pull it and hook onto the high point of the box and
14:54pull it back over on the right side up all right let's go flip this truck over
14:59rushing to the rescue his heavy equipment operator jacob moore

15:47we're back on the road now so hopefully we didn't lose too much time
15:50uh i'm feeling a little bit stressed about what tony will think

16:32i'm definitely back in the corner at this point i've got all this ground that i just finished paying off
16:36and no water license to be able to mine it and it's just like it's there taunting me
16:40really this has left me with no other choices but to move on
16:44100 miles east of tony rick ness hasn't mined a single ounce of gold
16:51forced to abandon a pile of pay and the richest ground he's ever mined at his duncan creek claim
16:59rick's committed his entire operation to gamble on new land
17:03the end of the day i had to make a deal with troy in lightning creek you know i have to do something
17:09before we lose out on that even and there's people snooping around for for ground with
17:13licenses on it everywhere and i can't afford to wait any longer last week i'm here to make a deal
17:20rick met with landowner troy taylor 15 royalty payment we're going to do a hundred ounce payment
17:26and we can get started out there right away made a handshake deal to lease lightning creek
17:31and moved his entire mining operation eight miles northwest while we're at lightning creek
17:40we're going to go and hit this as hard as we can
17:45this year you know gold price is once again record high so we got about 100 ounces a week to get by the
17:50end of the year if we're going to get to 1800 ounces so we're really going to get a move on
17:54we've broken ground down at lightning creek plenty of challenges ahead of us this is new ground we got
18:00to learn time to get on some gold rick's opened the diamond cut and is depending on his crew to locate
18:10the pockets of gold rich pager in this notoriously unpredictable area
18:32the diamond cuts go definitely going a good speed but at the start of any cut it takes some time to get
18:37prepped up this ain't bad but it may seem frivolous that we're just moving dirt from point a to point
18:43b but this is what we need to do efficiency is key not going to lie this is a good day
18:50i just want to make sure i'm keeping up with the pace because at the end of the season i want a big
18:55gold bonus so you know whatever it takes to get down to pay and start moving it is what i'll do

19:25look at that you ever seen pay dirt pay dirt that's what it is right there boulders and gravels
19:38pay dirt is gravelly and rocky gold bearing material that lies beneath the waste topsoil known as
19:46overburdening that's with the gold in it right yeah let's look at it that looks good that whole
19:53floor down there that's the painter we're looking for that came quick when we don't have to go down
19:57150 feet hey just eating this area right here yeah it's bigger than peck is found i know i know
20:02that's exciting and that should make for quick stripping and then we've got below that according to
20:08troy anywhere it's 12 to 15 feet of pay yeah so put the overburden where it wants to go and
20:13lost a good amount of pay dirt exposed here in no time let's get back on gold let's do it let's
20:18do it we're already down to pay you know i'm not used to that we're used to going 100 some feet
20:22through overburden just to get to it and it's nice that it's so shallow here um bailey's doing a great
20:26job trucks are moving dirt sun's out good day with the team on the pay layer rick tasks the crew with
20:36stripping the entire diamond cut compared to like rick's claims it's a huge difference because we're
20:42moving about 160 feet worth overburden and then over here it's you know five feet it's my first time
20:50seeing pay once we get that through the sluice box and through the plan it'll be good to see the actual
20:56gold while the team works rick takes a moment to make his handshake deal with troy official and sign the lease
21:06it's ridiculous i'm kind of reading through it and i don't i just don't like some of the stuff i'm
21:13seeing oh yeah hey z you got copy yeah go ahead let's see why don't you come over here and i'll show you
21:23something all right what's up buddy you're gonna make me read no i've got an updated agreement with
21:38troy he's given himself an awful lot of power i think where how it works is that he i i have to
21:43submit my mining plan to him and then he decides how it works right that says that he shall have access
21:49the equipment and or personnel at his discretion well that means to me that means yeah on a tuesday
21:54you come and shut down the sluice box i think it's a bit of an overreach i just don't you i always
22:00assumed when you lease the ground then you get to do with what you want like how your mining plan is
22:05and this sounds like this sounds like you sign a lease and then he has all the power i don't know
22:09what the angle is there i don't know if there is an angle at this point i'm just i'm waiting to stumble
22:13around a corner and find them like this like whoa i pulled the you know what i mean like stupid like that
22:18gets your wheels turning right let's just read over the contract a little bit more we're down
22:24here we're keep plugging away yeah yeah no like i said i appreciate it screw my head on straight make
22:29sure that this deal is in our favor and keep on trucking keeps everyone here thanks buddy all right

22:57now i'm on the hook for 20 grand a month when i look at this the more i'm saying it's not a chance
23:02in hell i'm signing this i don't know why he's putting all this extra here it's just not uh it's
23:07not sitting right with me i've worked with troy for a while and i trust the guy but it's fishy that i
23:11just paid him off and now we're going back and suddenly he's got more ground for us and we're not
23:17paying him again you know i'm kind of thinking he might be using my lack of options to
23:21uh turn things in his favor rick has already spent over forty thousand dollars in fuel and wages
23:30mining lightning creek but it could be all for nothing i'm trying to stay calm but i'm getting
23:38pretty riled up about it because i'm already down there working um i've got money into this i've got
23:42i've got guys down there i've got equipment down there um and i'm not stopping uh but i'm not signing
23:48this so he's gonna have to change his change his way of thinking because that's right now we have
24:08two wash plants running they have a little bit of time to do a lap of going into the bridge cut
24:13checking on bob making sure everyone's doing all right at dominion tyson lee is maxing out sluicing
24:21on the golden mile and in the bridge cut he has new operator mike digging out pay dirt
24:31i want to prove to this crew that i'm capable i can do the job like whatever they throw at me i
24:36definitely have the taste of that gold fever while greenhorn amy in charge of running wash plant
24:43bob feeds 250 yards of pay an hour i am making sure that i am keeping a constant flow of pay dirt
24:54going up the conveyors and also making sure they're not getting clogged up or many other things that i'm
25:03sure
25:17we're going to shut off the generator
25:33oh this doesn't look good what happened it's all clogged up at the top i just saw rocks shooting from
25:40the side unless there's a rock jammed in somewhere like up against our chain drive that caused it to
25:47not want to spin but first things first get all the dirt off the belts tyson suspects wash plant bob has
25:55rocks lodged in its hopper feeders internal conveyor chains stopping the mechanism from moving pay dirt
26:02toward the shaker deck leading to it piling up the solution dig out the hopper feeder removing all
26:10rocks lodged in the chain conveyor then clear any rocks from the super stacker's belt rollers
26:16and start the plant up again
26:18yeah we just want to clear it out yeah because if we fired the super stacker up they'd be flying
26:29around like popcorn okay go get sucked down into the tail drum and slice the belt okay you did a great job

26:50what happened this chain bind up on something like a rock got stuck in the chain drive
26:56okay did we anything up i don't know we're just trying to shovel it out and make sure that the belt's
27:02hold good you can see there's a lot of big rocks on the conveyor belt itself give me that shovel

30:35truck driver mason mcintyre to help out the conditions down here are pretty sloppy right now
30:42it's causing like a lot of big ruts which is hard to drive in sometimes for some people
30:49you gotta adjust to the conditions and some people catch on really quick and
30:53are used to it and some people just don't catch on at all and that's how mistakes happen
31:00that could be quite dangerous honestly if you can't run something like this which is
31:05not simple but a lot more simple than another piece of equipment oh somebody dumped her

33:39tony's crew are back in the race to get down to pay before sluice a lot runs out
33:47if you want to do x amount of ounces a year you need x amount of people
33:51so you'd rather put up with some more i suppose but sometimes not that easy especially when it
33:56costs money i mean they turn trucks over but sometimes you wonder what the heck you're doing
34:17i asked trey to come down and meet me here um i'm basically gonna tell him that his contract is
34:21bull i mean i don't know what he wants me to do with this i'm not budging off that ground and i'm not
34:25signing this so we need to come to some kind of compromise
34:33after moving his crew to a new claim on lightning creek rick ness has called a meeting with landlord
34:41troy taylor to negotiate the terms of the lease hey hey rick how you doing good good to see you
34:49oh we gotta put some signatures on paper and make it legal there's no way i have gotten over the
34:59contract and a lot of things that i don't like it says that you have the right to change the mining
35:05plan at any time you can pull my equipment and my personnel when you see fit there's an awful lot
35:11of power going in your hands here i mean i would like to think that our last contract went pretty
35:15smooth i think it's coming down to a trusting and you know for me right here in this contract
35:22looks like you don't trust me at all and so i'm kind of wondering why i trust this you know
35:26yeah i get that i it's nothing personal it's just since the last agreement things have changed so
35:35much with the water licenses these days if there's any blemish if you are doing anything wrong maybe you
35:43weren't here on a day that something's going sideways it will be reflected on me it could result
35:51then getting my water license revoked i want to keep mining so i have to i have to have some teeth in
35:58this uh in this agreement i can kind of see where you're coming from troy but i don't believe that
36:11this level of supervision is necessary i mean i i don't i don't want to feel like i'm looking over
36:15my shoulder all the time and that's why i brought this um you know off the bat that's 100 ounces
36:21that i owe you as a minimum royalty on this deal and i'd be willing to give that to you up front
36:26right now today and get rid of this
36:44oh boy i from my perspective if i don't have some control in the agreement that's all i've got i i can't
36:51i can't back up on that i just can't
36:56i understand it's got to be a tough one to tough pill to swallow

37:52i'm still responsible for the water license until i get paid as you know i'm i'm still on the hook

39:10to question this this ground is we haven't even solution yet but we did test it we know there's
