Italian police arrest nine and seize €8 million in Hamas financing probe

Investigators said the money also supported families of people involved in suicide attacks or imprisoned for terrorism offences, which prosecutors argued strengthened Hamas' operational capacity.

00:00Nine people have been arrested and millions of euros seized in an illicit Hamas financing probe
00:08in Italy. According to investigators, around 7 million euros were raised for Hamas over more
00:15than two years, while assets worth 8 million euros were also seized. The money was supposedly
00:22collected by NGOs as humanitarian aid for Palestinian civilians, a policeman's statement
00:28said but was instead sent to the militant group via a complex fundraising system and used to support
00:36the movement's criminal activities, including attacks against civilians. One of the suspects
00:43arrested is Mohamed Hanun, president of the Palestinian Association in Italy, according
00:49to Interior Minister Matteo Piandetosi. The investigation began after the 7th of October
00:562023 Hamas attack and benefited from cooperation with the authorities of the Netherlands and
01:02Israel, allowing authorities to monitor financial flows and intercept communications.
