The name Merlion is a combination of two words: "Mer" (meaning the sea) and "Lion." It was designed to represent Singapore’s journey from a humble fishing village to a powerful city.
The Story of the Merlion The Merlion is a mythical creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish. Each part has a deep meaning:
The Fish Body: Represents Singapore's beginnings as an ancient fishing village called Temasek (which means "Sea Town" in Javanese).
The Lion Head: Represents Singapore’s original name, Singapura, which means "Lion City" in Sanskrit.
The Legend: According to the Malay Annals, a 14th-century Sumatran Prince named Sang Nila Utama landed on the island and saw a magnificent creature with a black head and a white neck. His advisor told him it was a "Singa" (Lion). The Prince took this as a good omen and decided to name the island Singapura.
The Design: Interestingly, the Merlion wasn't an ancient myth—it was designed in 1964 by Alec Fraser-Brunner for the Singapore Tourism Board to be used as their logo. It became so popular that it is now the official national symbol of Singapore!
