00:00Once
00:29there were four children
00:31whose names were Peter, Susan,
00:34Edmund and Lucy.
00:36During the war
00:37they were sent away to the house of an old
00:40professor who lived in the heart of the country.
00:43He was a very
00:43old man with shaggy white hair
00:46and they liked him almost at
00:48once, though he was
00:50so odd-looking that when they
00:52met him, Lucy, who was the youngest,
00:54was a little afraid of him and Edmund,
00:56who was the next youngest,
00:58wanted to laugh and had to keep on
01:00pretending he was blowing his nose to hide
01:02it. But soon
01:04they set to exploring
01:06the house, which was the
01:08sort of house you never seemed to come to
01:09the end of, and this
01:11was how the adventures began.
01:15One
01:16room they looked into was quite
01:17empty, except for one big
01:20wardrobe, the sort
01:22that has a looking-glass in the door.
01:23Nothing there, said Peter,
01:26the oldest, and they all
01:27trooped out again, all except
01:29Lucy. She stayed
01:31behind because
01:33she thought it would be worthwhile
01:34trying the door of the
01:36wardrobe, even though she felt
01:38almost sure that it would be locked.
01:40To her surprise,
01:42it opened quite easily
01:44and two mothballs dropped out.
01:47Looking inside,
01:49she saw several
01:50coats hanging up, mostly
01:52long fur coats,
01:54and there was nothing Lucy liked
01:56so much as the smell
01:57and feel of fur.
02:00She immediately stepped into
02:02the wardrobe and got in among
02:03the coats and rubbed her face
02:05against them, leaving the door open,
02:07of course, because she knew that it is
02:09very foolish to shut oneself
02:11into any wardrobe.
02:14Soon
02:14she went further in
02:16and found that there was a second row
02:18of coats hanging up behind the first one.
02:22It was almost
02:23quite dark in there
02:24and she kept her arms stretched out
02:26in front of her
02:27so as not to bump her face
02:28into the back of the wardrobe,
02:30but the back never appeared.
02:33And the next moment
02:34she found that what was rubbing
02:36against her face and hands
02:38was no longer soft fur,
02:40but something hard and rough
02:42and even prickly.
02:45Why?
02:46It is just like branches of trees,
02:48exclaimed Lucy.
02:50She found that she was standing
02:51in the middle of a wood
02:53at night time
02:54with snow under her feet
02:56and snowflakes falling
02:57through the air.
03:00Lucy felt a little frightened,
03:02but she felt very inquisitive
03:05and excited as well.
03:07I can always get back
03:09if anything goes wrong,
03:10thought Lucy.
03:12She began to walk forward,
03:14crunch, crunch,
03:15over the snow
03:16and through the wood
03:17towards the other light.
03:20In about ten minutes
03:21she reached it
03:22and found that it was a lamppost.
03:25As she stood looking at it,
03:26wondering why there was a lamppost
03:28in the middle of a wood,
03:29a very strange person
03:31stepped out
03:32from among the trees
03:33into the light.
03:35From the waist upwards
03:36he was like a man,
03:37but his legs
03:38were shaped like a goat's
03:40and instead of feet
03:41he had goat's hoofs.
03:43He had a strange
03:44but pleasant little face
03:46with a short pointed beard
03:48and curly hair
03:49and out of the hair
03:50there stuck two horns,
03:52one on each side
03:53of his forehead.
03:54He was a fawn
03:55and when he saw Lucy
03:58he gave such a start
03:59of surprise
04:00that he dropped
04:01the brown papered parcels
04:02he was carrying.
04:03Goodness gracious me,
04:05exclaimed the fawn.
04:06Good evening.
04:07said Lucy.
04:08Good evening.
04:09Good evening.
04:10Said the fawn.
04:11Excuse me,
04:12I don't want to be inquisitive
04:14but should I be right
04:16in thinking
04:16that you are
04:17a daughter of Eve?
04:20My name's Lucy,
04:21said she,
04:22not quite understanding him.
04:24But you are,
04:25forgive me,
04:26you are what they call
04:27a girl,
04:29asked the fawn.
04:30Of course I'm a girl,
04:31said Lucy.
04:32To be sure,
04:33to be sure,
04:34said the fawn.
04:34How stupid of me.
04:36Allow me to introduce myself.
04:38My name is Tumnus
04:40and may I ask,
04:42friends,
04:44have a lady a girl,
04:44about her.
