At least one person was killed and 26 others injured in a pile-up on the Kan-Etsu Expressway in Minakami, Gunma Prefecture, late Friday. Police reported the crash began with a collision between two lorries in snowy conditions, blocking lanes and causing more than 50 vehicles to collide as drivers struggled to brake on the slippery road. A 77-year-old woman from Tokyo died, while five people remain in serious condition. The accident occurred as Japan entered its end-of-year holiday season.
