00:30The Gentilhaus
00:32We are standing here in front of the Gentilhaus in one of the most beautiful villa districts of Aschaffenburg, which was built in 1922-23, a good 100 years ago.
00:48It was designed, built and furnished at his own expense by Anton Gentil, a manufacturer from Aschaffenburg who today would be called a designer.
00:59He was professionally trained as a craftsman, but increasingly moved into the artistic field and became an avid collector.
01:09This house is quite remarkable, because it was never built for residential use, but rather as a kind of model for the German development of the arts and crafts movement, which came here from Great Britain during the second half of the 19th century.
01:26So here we are in a house designed by Anton Gentil for the sole purpose of displaying his art collection. He has mixed the exhibited art movements and styles at will.
01:36Regardless of how one feels about this, not always recognizable concept, the house and exhibits clearly demonstrate the spirit of the times during the early 20th century.
01:46It's definitely worth a visit.
