Where Aschaffenburg Castle stands today was once the site of an earlier fortification. In the 13th century, a castle was built here on the banks of the Main, which was destroyed in 1552 during the Margrave War. Between 1605 and 1614, the Elector Archbishop Johann Schwelkard of Kronberg had Johannisburg Castle built on the same site, which is now one of the most important architectural monuments in Germany.
