In our next episode of How I Host… we're celebrating color at the home of designer Eva Sonaike who uses trinkets and treasures from her travels to set the table for a stunning Sunday lunch.
Transcript
00:00Hi, I'm Eva Schoenaik here. This is how I host. Come on in.
00:09So today I'm hosting a Sunday family lunch.
00:11People often think that a Sunday lunch will be very simple, but I love to go overboard and bring color and pattern into play.
00:17So the table is literally the centerpiece of our living space.
00:20I love it because it's large, it's bold, and when I style it, I also like people to see the actual wood
00:27because it has a feeling, it has stories to tell, so I love it.
00:30So when I started tablescape, color is the foundation for me, for any tablescape.
00:35Generally for my designs, I always think about color first.
00:38I'm going to add a lot of other colors, but my foundation or my key colors are pink and green.
00:43And I'm taking all the details, all the little items that I love, that are my favorites, that are in this cabinet,
00:48to style the table and give it real personality.
00:51So the first stage of my tablescape is laying the placemats.
00:55They're really plain in comparison to what else I'm going to put on, but it's quite a nice contrast.
01:01It also works really well with the sparkling table runner there.
01:05So it gives you a bit of texture and a bit of frills.
01:10You hardly find plates with African patterns.
01:14Every plate is different, everything is colorful, patterned, but nothing really matches.
01:19So I think they're perfect for this.
01:21So even when it comes to the dishes that I'm preparing, I love to bring color into play.
01:26I love greens, I love fresh vegetables, maybe light fish.
01:29To have conversations over a nice meal, but nothing too precious.
01:32Something that's just fun and easy to digest.
01:34So this is a really beautiful cutlery.
01:39My parents actually got, I think it must have been in the 1980s, on a trip to Florence.
01:45And they look all different and I like that.
01:47They have a nice shine to them.
01:49So it kind of frames it nicely, I like that.
01:51So I've only got four coasters of these really beautiful amber-colored glass ones.
01:56But then I also have some really nice African-inspired raffia.
01:59So I'm just going to do a mix and match.
02:06So I picked these glasses up in a charity shop the other week.
02:09And I have a lot of glasses, but they just spoke to me.
02:12Just really, really beautiful bubbles.
02:14And they're quite heavy.
02:15And I love the way the kind of purple-pink color kind of fades in at the bottom.
02:19Perfect for my tablescapes.
02:21So I think today I'm going to make this beautiful orchid my centerpiece.
02:28It's wide, really floaty, and it doesn't interfere with the colors.
02:31But this basket I picked up in Marrakesh.
02:34It's perfect if you want to put breads in or potatoes.
02:37It keeps them nice and warm.
02:39And I like it, I think, at the end of the table here.
02:42Next is to get the vases for all the greens and all the foliage and everything I'm going to put on the table.
02:50So I'm just going to put them down for now.
02:52And once I have decided which plants and flowers go into which, I'm going to style them properly.
02:58Really beautiful tangene, which we use for salt and pepper.
03:01I love Marrakesh for its beautiful table accessories.
03:04I'm very kind of clear with the curation when I put a tablescape together.
03:07Does it fit in?
03:08If it doesn't fit in, it doesn't come onto this table.
03:10I love these elephants.
03:11They're very, very heavy.
03:13And someone told me to always place elephants towards the door for kind of good luck and prosperity.
03:19So we're going to place them towards the door.
03:22But when our guests come and share with us, we have a conversation starter.
03:25I love napkins.
03:26I love cloth napkins.
03:27I think they elevate a table.
03:29I've got my own napkins design.
03:31I'm a textile and interior designer.
03:33They're inspired by Kano, which is a city in northern Nigeria, which is well known for its beautiful architecture.
03:39You can have them in a really minimalist setting and they're just the wow effect.
03:45For the next step, I'm going to arrange some flowers just to bring a bit of color, a bit of texture to the table.
03:50Also a bit of height that we can play a little bit with the layering.
03:53So when I was a kid, we always had family lunches and my parents had a kid's table where we sat separate from them.
04:00But what I love here, we all sit together.
04:02We are all so busy and, you know, everyone is doing their own things.
04:05My kids are at teenage age, so, you know, they have their own life.
04:08Coming together on a Sunday lunch is the time when we really get together with family.
04:13We laugh, we debate, we discuss what happened during the week.
04:16Something like this actually looks really nice. I think that may already be enough.
04:24They bring life to the table. I really feel like there's more going on right now.
04:28I just have to place them in the right spot.
04:30So I'm really happy with the tablescape. It just looks really nice and welcoming.
04:36They're little personal stories kind of intertwined in it.
04:39Travels we did together, things that I experienced by myself, it's all coming here together.
04:43So I think it's more than just like an aesthetic look.
04:46It's a real kind of story, conversation starter, but also something which is really personal to me and my family.
04:53I think my family will really enjoy the Sunday lunch here today.
04:56I have this really beautiful goat spell which was given to me when I was a child on a hiking trip in Switzerland by a farmer.
05:05I'm going to use that to call them in a second.
05:07Thank you so much for joining me and I hope you loved it.
05:13Still so much fun.
05:14I will show you you guys I've been here who Marchegiani other people and everyone.
05:15Never ever know why.
05:17You guys are such an amazing event.
05:20Have you been back.
05:21You have been a crazy scout, and you have to kind of share.
05:22All right, twelve videos.
05:24I've seen theštengi plac radii, which I'm my favorite team.
05:26Me too, therefore, my son, not my desire.
05:27I love what you wanted to be like today.
05:28I'm going to have a great track.
05:30I've seen the
