00:30He called and was telling me I was real nauseous and drowsy.
00:34We're here to check the welfare of a James Cabela.
00:37Something is up.
00:38This woman is not acting right.
00:40She was going down a deep, dark path.
00:42It's weird.
00:43I think somebody got killed.
01:00This is Jimmy, my brother, being introduced as part of the wedding party at my husband and I's wedding.
01:18I'm smiling, getting ready to start dancing, having a good time.
01:24All right, ladies and gentlemen, a round of applause for your wedding party.
01:28Jimmy was a great guy.
01:30He was funny, smart.
01:32He had a good soul, a good heart.
01:35Here is Nicky being presented as Mrs. Capello.
01:45And she's a little shy at first.
01:49The month prior, they had just gotten married themselves and seemed like a happy couple.
01:55We were so happy for him.
01:58Nicky seemed like a nice girl.
02:00Yeah, it was nice to see Jimmy happy.
02:05Jimmy Capello was born on May 27, 1981, in Buffalo, New York.
02:11He was an ambitious kid, easy going.
02:15He was always pretty happy.
02:17He always laughed a lot.
02:20He was able to relate well with people.
02:23Played a little bit of sports.
02:25He liked cars.
02:26Jimmy was a goof.
02:31He can make people laugh.
02:33He can make people smile.
02:35You're having a bad day.
02:37He can turn that right around for you.
02:42Unfortunately, Jimmy's parents' marriage breaks down while he and Jamie are still young.
02:47When he is 18, Jimmy and his mother leave New York State,
02:52eventually settling in Huntsville, Alabama.
02:54By that point, I was in nursing school.
02:59We would talk on the phone.
03:01And he was a talker.
03:04And thankfully, I was a listener.
03:08In 2006, a friend of Jimmy offers him a new career opportunity.
03:13Jimmy sort of fell into private investigation.
03:17It wasn't something that he reached out to.
03:20It sort of landed on his lap.
03:23He entertained it, realized he was really good at it.
03:27I was excited for him.
03:30Jimmy was great at his job.
03:32He dove right into it.
03:34On June 16, 2008, Jimmy's personal life changes too.
03:39Jimmy met Nicky when he was 27 years old.
03:44He was riding his motorcycle and saw her on the corner.
03:53I think she was in the car.
03:55And I guess they locked eyes.
03:57He turned his motorcycle around and introduced himself.
04:01Jimmy was very excited to introduce Nicky to us.
04:06We flew into Alabama.
04:09Nicky ended up picking us up at the airport.
04:12She was so silly and so giddy and so nervous.
04:18She was studying nursing, and I was a nurse.
04:24It gave Nicky and I something to talk about instantly.
04:26They were happy, holding hands, hugging.
04:31I felt like she was a great person for him.
04:35I think he knew within himself that he was going to marry her,
04:40and he acted on that very quickly.
04:44Jimmy and Nicky got married in July 2010 in Huntsville, Alabama.
04:49Beautiful wedding.
04:50It's the end of the night, and it's time for them to depart.
05:07They're both on bikes.
05:08It was Jimmy's idea.
05:10Then Jimmy stops and does a burnout.
05:14And they're off in the sunset.
05:17Or the sun down.
05:20Just four weeks later,
05:24Jamie marries Florida-based firefighter Chris Weiss.
05:28Jimmy was a groomsman at our wedding,
05:31and he was pretty good at keeping me calm.
05:35You know, here's another drink, here's another drink.
05:37Just trying to relax, you know.
05:39It was a really good time.
05:41I was excited for him.
05:44I thought Chris was a great guy,
05:46and Jimmy was in love with Nicky.
05:48It was a good year.
05:52It was a good year for us.
05:54On August 5, 2014,
05:56four years into their marriage,
05:59Nicky gives birth to a baby girl.
06:01They name her Riley.
06:03This is Riley as an infant.
06:07Hiccups and all.
06:10Diaper that's too big for her.
06:12And you can hear him saying shh and tapping her on the belly.
06:22Like, it's going to be okay.
06:24As Riley grows, Jimmy and Nicky balance parenting and work.
06:29And I tell Mommy, we're really excited because we might get to go up and see her.
06:33See her in work action.
06:38And work action.
06:40Say, hi, Daddy.
06:42I'm helping Mommy cook.
06:44Because I can't be put down.
06:46Even when the other one was working,
06:48she was sending video clips of Riley to him.
06:51He was sending video clips of Riley to her.
06:55See, we tried FaceTiming you,
06:56but you didn't answer,
06:57so we're just going to send you a video.
06:59See, it's about bath time.
07:03He's out, Riley.
07:04Can you say hi, Daddy?
07:07Say hi, Daddy.
07:08They were over the moon.
07:09Hi, Daddy.
07:14This is Christmas in Buffalo
07:18with the whole family,
07:20all the grandkids,
07:22excited about opening all their gifts.
07:24I think Riley was possibly about a year old.
07:30It was great to meet and keep the kids in contact with each other.
07:38But you are never prepared for how much money it takes to provide for another human being.
07:46I remember a visit up in Alabama.
07:53Riley was just a little bit older at this point.
07:56They were having a little bit of financial trouble.
08:00We helped them out a little bit.
08:02And I remember one afternoon,
08:06my brother was working,
08:07and Nikki suggested,
08:08hey, let's go to this outdoor mall.
08:10They have restaurants there.
08:11And I'll never forget one of the stores that we walked into.
08:17And she bought a watch.
08:20And the watch wasn't cheap.
08:23It caught me off guard.
08:25You're experiencing a little bit of financial hardship,
08:28but you bought something for yourself.
08:32I thought it was a little bit of a selfish move.
08:35I don't think Jimmy ever knew about that purchase.
08:41And it made me wonder what else he didn't know.
08:48What else she did without him knowing.
08:56Now with a growing family,
08:58Jimmy Capello throws himself into life as a father and husband.
09:02What's up, Riley?
09:04But Jamie becomes aware of an ongoing problem of Nikki's.
09:08We would be walking together
09:11where she would like walk a little bit of funny,
09:15make a little grimace.
09:19And I said, well, what's going on?
09:22Oh, it was an injury that occurred before.
09:26First time I asked Jimmy,
09:28he was genuinely concerned.
09:29He wants to figure out what's causing it.
09:32Say mama, mama.
09:34Say mama.
09:36No.
09:37Sorry.
09:39But, yep.
09:41All's good.
09:42He's like, let's get massages done.
09:46Let's go for physical therapy.
09:49Let's exercise.
09:51We got to figure this out.
09:52She was having to take pain medication.
09:57And my brother was concerned.
10:00She wasn't getting relief.
10:03Soon after, Jimmy's concerns turned to alarm.
10:07He discovers Nikki is leading a double life.
10:10He had found out that she opened up a bank account
10:14without him knowing.
10:15Different purchases that were made that he didn't know about
10:20and that she had contacted an ex of hers.
10:24So they started having some trust issues.
10:28In 2016, six years into their marriage,
10:31Jimmy finds a disturbing set of messages on Nikki's phone.
10:35He had found out that she had contacted a drug dealer.
10:39Now she's meeting people off the streets for pain medication.
10:45But even worse, in the message thread,
10:48she had asked this drug dealer,
10:51is it safe if my daughter is with me?
10:53Because I have my daughter with me.
10:56Jimmy was so upset.
10:57He put a quick halt to it.
11:00He's expressing this to me in a phone conversation
11:03that he's so confused.
11:05What do I do?
11:07I struggled with trying to find the right words
11:10to help him through this.
11:12As a mother, how could you in so many ways?
11:16I was furious.
11:18I was mad.
11:19Right?
11:19For better or worse, it is a thing.
11:21But when you're willfully taking advantage of people
11:27and putting your child in danger,
11:29it's only acceptable.
11:31I started questioning if I even really knew who Nikki was.
11:37Maybe I didn't know her at all.
11:39But Jimmy still wanted to work on the relationship.
11:42They had a daughter.
11:44He still wanted this white picket fence,
11:47and he wanted that with her.
11:49Nikki promises to make a change.
11:52But over the following months,
11:53other people start to notice strange behavior.
11:56She was falling asleep at work,
11:59and she would leave the unit,
12:02not come back for some time.
12:05Manager pulled her into the office,
12:07and they said,
12:09your behavior at work is concerning.
12:13You no longer have a job.
12:18She told Jimmy,
12:20but it was downplayed,
12:22and it was more of the employer's fault
12:25than her fault.
12:29With his wife now out of work
12:31and their income slashed,
12:33Jimmy carries all the responsibility for his family.
12:36Jimmy works 60, 70, 80 hours a week.
12:38Kim's gone for long hours.
12:41And on the cameras that they have inside their home,
12:44there's Nikki on the couch
12:45while Riley's unsupervised,
12:47just walking around the house,
12:49you know, doing what she wants,
12:50watching TV,
12:51getting into stuff.
12:53Been a fireman for 20 years,
12:56and children left unsupervised.
12:59It can be a terrible thing.
13:01Are you going to do a cannonball?
13:08Mm-hmm.
13:11With Nikki under the influence
13:13of pain medication at home,
13:15Jimmy often has no choice
13:17but to bring Riley to work with him.
13:21You're silly.
13:22This was around the time
13:24when Jimmy was growing more concerned
13:28about Nikki.
13:31It was taking a toll on their marriage,
13:34trying to put all your energy
13:35in both ends of your life,
13:37your work life,
13:38and still trying to keep Riley stable.
13:41Much to Jimmy's relief,
13:43a glimmer of hope appears
13:44in the summer of 2017.
13:47Nikki gets this new position
13:49at this other hospital.
13:52She's going to be a charge nurse
13:54and maybe even become a manager.
13:57She's excited.
13:58He's excited.
14:00Maybe this will help her.
14:02Nikki's pain seems to lessen,
14:04and her new job quickly eases
14:06the couple's financial stress.
14:08The house that they were in,
14:10neighborhood, I thought,
14:11was getting a little bit sketchy in here.
14:13So they moved to a little
14:15upper-scale neighborhood.
14:17But it was a bigger house,
14:19bigger garage.
14:20With Nikki now working,
14:22Jimmy finds more time for himself.
14:25Plus, dip is silver,
14:26and I can't get that off,
14:27so I'm going to sand it off.
14:28We're probably going to wrap
14:29the car because it's
14:30actually pretty bad.
14:32So at this point,
14:32Jimmy's moved on
14:33from motorcycles to cars.
14:35So he bought a Corvette.
14:37Riley, Riley.
14:38It's learning time, right?
14:39What is this?
14:42Engine.
14:42Engine.
14:43What is this?
14:44What is this?
14:46A supertizer.
14:49Yeah, and what is this?
14:51This is Riley spending time
14:53with her daddy in the garage,
14:55and he is quizzing her
14:58on the different parts of the car,
15:02asking her,
15:03what is this?
15:04She had a toy vehicle,
15:07and when he would be in the garage
15:09working on his car,
15:11he would also help her
15:14work on her car.
15:16Here, now it's for a step.
15:20In April 2018,
15:2210 months after Nikki starts
15:24her new job,
15:25the family gather
15:26for a celebration.
15:27Nikki and Jimmy
15:28drove down to Florida
15:30for my grandkids' birthday.
15:33And we're sitting at the table,
15:35and Nikki's sitting across from me,
15:37barely able to keep her eyes open.
15:40She wasn't focused.
15:42She would be looking through you.
15:45She didn't know where she was.
15:48Jimmy would say,
15:49go upstairs,
15:50and then, like,
15:51shuttle her off to bed,
15:52and then he would come down,
15:52sorry, she's just, you know,
15:53she took her medicine
15:54that makes her tired.
15:54So, the boys' land
15:57had a couple beers
15:58at a local bar,
15:59and I remember sitting there
16:02on the couch,
16:04and the kids were in bed,
16:06and Nikki sat across.
16:09She never said a word.
16:11I don't think we spoke
16:12one word to each other.
16:16She couldn't keep her eyes open,
16:17and she was just on the couch,
16:19slumped over,
16:21breathing like eight times a minute.
16:22I knew what this was.
16:26I could see it.
16:28Her personality was starting to change.
16:31She wasn't that bubbly person anymore.
16:34She was going down a deep, dark path,
16:37and Jimmy was losing hope
16:39that he could actually fix this situation.
16:41When that visit was over with,
16:53he called me the next day,
16:55and I said,
16:57Jimmy, this is concerning.
17:00We're at a dangerous point now.
17:02And he says,
17:04Jamie, I know.
17:07I don't want to be like Dad.
17:08I don't want to go through a divorce.
17:11I said,
17:12you have got to know
17:13what she is taking.
17:15I know it's breaking his heart.
17:18Now, I don't think he ever imagined it,
17:20that he was going to have to
17:21investigate his own life,
17:22but he did.
17:25He was able to start documenting
17:27everything that she was doing.
17:28He starts sending me pictures
17:33of random things he's finding
17:36in her work bag.
17:38And he sent a picture of two pills,
17:44oxycodones.
17:46They were still in their original paper wrap.
17:50And I said,
17:52Jimmy, this is only a medication
17:54you can get from the hospital.
17:55I said,
17:57she stole that.
17:59That is not good.
18:02Jimmy finds drugs
18:03that are not typically used for abuse.
18:06Why in the world
18:07would she have
18:08a bottle of insulin?
18:11Why would she have
18:12a box of lancets?
18:16Lancets are used
18:17when you're a diabetic
18:18to get a little blood sample.
18:20I mean,
18:21this was a big puzzle.
18:23Summer 2018.
18:31The whole family gather
18:33in Huntsville
18:33for Riley's fourth birthday.
18:36The party was going great.
18:38Kids were having a blast.
18:40Come on, JJ.
18:42I just noticed
18:43Nikki was off.
18:46She didn't participate.
18:47I don't know if it was
18:49because she wasn't
18:50getting attention.
18:51It just seemed like
18:53there was an issue.
18:55She was irritable,
18:57getting short with Riley.
19:00Jimmy tries to
19:01get Nikki in a better mood.
19:04He tries to shove her
19:05into the baby pool,
19:07you know,
19:07as a joke,
19:08get her wet.
19:09Oh no,
19:10she didn't like that.
19:11She immediately went
19:15inside the house,
19:17went in the kitchen cupboard,
19:19and took a pill.
19:24Jimmy is feeling
19:25all kinds of emotions,
19:27all kinds of desperation.
19:29He wandered her
19:30off the medications.
19:32In the following days,
19:35however,
19:36Nikki's behavior
19:37suddenly changes.
19:39He says,
19:40I went in her work bag,
19:42not even an alcohol swap
19:44in her work bag.
19:46Nothing.
19:47At this point,
19:52I believe that Nikki
19:54was in fear
19:55and was trying
19:59to figure out
19:59a way
20:00around the situation.
20:04On September 11,
20:052018,
20:07James Capello
20:08gets a worrying call
20:09from his son.
20:10He called
20:11and was telling me,
20:12he says,
20:13God,
20:13I felt horrible yesterday.
20:15I couldn't focus.
20:17I was real nauseous
20:18and drowsy.
20:20He was talking
20:21about the confusion.
20:22He was so confused.
20:24He said
20:25he couldn't even
20:26count money.
20:28He talked about
20:28how he
20:29fell down the stairs.
20:32I was
20:33set back.
20:34I was really surprised.
20:36He was fairly healthy.
20:37He never had
20:38really any
20:39issues.
20:41He said,
20:42I feel fine now.
20:45I says,
20:45well,
20:45you should go
20:46get checked out.
20:48Jimmy was convinced
20:49that
20:50Nikki was
20:52drugging him.
20:53He was
20:53so convinced
20:55that he said
20:56to me,
20:57Jamie,
20:57if anything
20:58happens to me,
21:00you are
21:03to get Riley.
21:07And I thought,
21:08that's ridiculous.
21:09I didn't believe
21:12that Nikki
21:12was drugging
21:13him.
21:15She
21:16is a nurse.
21:20After talking
21:21to his family,
21:22Jimmy returns
21:23to work.
21:24But a week later,
21:25he messages
21:26Jamie again.
21:27I was at work.
21:29I get a text message
21:31from Jimmy
21:32a little after
21:3310 o'clock
21:34at night,
21:34and it said,
21:36today sucked.
21:38I had another episode.
21:39I called him.
21:41and he answered
21:43the phone
21:44and he was
21:46anxious.
21:48He
21:48couldn't form
21:49his words
21:50correctly.
21:52Nikki gets
21:53on the phone
21:53and I'm like,
21:54what is going on?
21:56And she said,
21:57what Jimmy
21:58is experiencing
21:59are classic
22:01signs of
22:02hypoglycemia.
22:02And I said,
22:05please,
22:06please,
22:06please take
22:07him to the
22:07doctor tomorrow.
22:09Please.
22:09She said,
22:10I will.
22:10I will.
22:11I'll take care
22:11of him.
22:12Jamie calls
22:13Jimmy first
22:14thing the
22:14following morning.
22:15He doesn't
22:16answer his phone.
22:17So I text
22:19her.
22:20I said,
22:20hey,
22:21how is he?
22:23She said,
22:23oh,
22:23he's doing
22:24fine.
22:25He woke
22:25up and
22:26he went
22:27off to work.
22:28So at
22:29this point,
22:30I'm thinking
22:31he's doing
22:32what he's
22:33doing.
22:34She's going
22:34to get him
22:34to the
22:35doctor and
22:36it was
22:36going to
22:36be okay.
22:38But despite
22:39what Nikki
22:40tells Jamie,
22:41Jimmy doesn't
22:41make it to
22:42work.
22:43His colleagues
22:44contact the
22:45police.
22:47The Huntsville
22:48Police Department
22:49first got a
22:50call about
22:50Jimmy from
22:51his coworkers
22:51probably between
22:52nine and
22:53midnight,
22:54Thursday night,
22:56just saying
22:56that we'd
22:57like to do
22:58a welfare
22:58check.
22:59He's not
22:59been at
23:00work like
23:00he's supposed
23:00to be.
23:0280-13,
23:07nobody's
23:07answering the
23:08door,
23:08so all
23:09the lights
23:10are on,
23:10both cars
23:11in the
23:11driveway,
23:12dogs barking
23:13his head
23:13off.
23:14Finally,
23:14they get
23:15some sort
23:15of remote
23:15doorbell
23:16thing where
23:17Nikki Capello
23:18answers.
23:18We're here
23:19to check
23:19the welfare
23:20over James
23:20Cabela.
23:26Can you
23:26come talk
23:27to us
23:27at the
23:27door,
23:28please?
23:29Hey.
23:30How long
23:38have y'all
23:38not heard
23:39from him?
23:40I saw
23:41him this
23:41morning at
23:41five.
23:42My daughter
23:43was looking
23:43up at
23:43nine.
23:45He was
23:47at home
23:47and I
23:48assumed
23:48that he
23:49had been
23:49going to
23:49work with
23:50his coworkers
23:51but apparently
23:53nobody's
23:54heard from
23:54him.
23:55His stuff
23:56is here
23:56as he
23:57would
23:58normally
23:58take
23:59anything.
23:59It's
23:59just
24:00odd.
24:01When can
24:02I file
24:02a missing
24:03person?
24:04You can
24:05now if
24:05you want.
24:07I may
24:07wait until
24:08tomorrow
24:08if he
24:09turns
24:09up.
24:10Okay.
24:11I don't
24:12know where
24:12he would
24:12have
24:12gone or
24:13anything
24:14like
24:14that.
24:15Okay.
24:17Well,
24:18like we
24:19said,
24:20if you
24:20want to
24:21file it
24:21now or
24:21if you
24:21want to
24:22wait,
24:22it's
24:22up to
24:22you.
24:24If not
24:24tonight,
24:25we'll get
24:25out of
24:25your hair
24:25and let
24:26you get
24:26back to
24:26sleep.
24:26She
24:28seemed
24:28completely
24:28unfazed
24:29that police
24:29were there
24:30in the
24:30middle
24:30of the
24:30night to
24:31say people
24:31are worried
24:31about your
24:32husband and
24:32we don't
24:32know where
24:32he is.
24:33It did
24:34not seem
24:34to ping
24:34her radar
24:35at all.
24:37It's
24:37weird.
24:38I think
24:39somebody
24:39got killed.
24:39The next
24:51day rolls
24:51around and
24:53I get a
24:54text message
24:55from my
24:55mom.
24:56Have you
24:57heard from
24:57Jimmy?
24:58He's
24:58missing.
25:00She said
25:00his car,
25:02his keys,
25:03his wallet,
25:04everything's at
25:05the house,
25:05but he's
25:06not there.
25:07I'm
25:09like,
25:09nobody's
25:10heard from
25:10him.
25:10This
25:11doesn't
25:11make any
25:11sense.
25:14I called
25:15Jimmy,
25:15he didn't
25:16answer.
25:17I called
25:18Nikki,
25:19and she
25:19picked up
25:19the phone.
25:20And I was
25:21like,
25:21Nikki,
25:21talk to
25:22me about
25:22this.
25:23Nikki
25:23didn't
25:24sound
25:24worried.
25:25She
25:25wasn't
25:26worried
25:26at all.
25:28I asked
25:29her,
25:30do we have
25:30the police
25:30department
25:31involved?
25:31She said
25:33that she
25:34was advised
25:34that it
25:35was best
25:36not to
25:37file a
25:37missing
25:37person's
25:38report
25:38yet.
25:39Not
25:39enough
25:40time
25:40has
25:40passed.
25:41I
25:41was
25:41so
25:42confused.
25:43And
25:44she
25:45said,
25:45Jamie?
25:47What if
25:47Jimmy
25:48doesn't
25:49come back?
25:50I have
25:50to worry
25:51about
25:51Riley
25:52and I.
25:53Her
25:53reactions
25:53were not
25:54normal for
25:54a husband
25:55that was
25:55missing.
25:56And I
25:56just said,
25:57I'll call
25:58you later.
25:59By
26:02mid-morning,
26:02with growing
26:03pressure from
26:03Jimmy's family
26:04and co-workers,
26:06Nikki
26:06finally calls
26:07in a
26:08missing
26:08persons
26:08report.
26:10They
26:10sent another
26:10patrol officer
26:11out there
26:11just to
26:12check the
26:12house.
26:13Does
26:14James
26:14Capella
26:14live here?
26:19Nikki
26:19is at
26:20her
26:20mother's
26:21house.
26:21They
26:21can't
26:21communicate
26:22real well
26:22through
26:22the
26:22doorbell
26:23finally
26:23says,
26:23look,
26:24give me
26:24your
26:24number
26:24and
26:24I'll
26:25just
26:25call
26:25you.
26:26And
26:26he
26:26doesn't
26:26have
26:27anything
26:27going
26:27on
26:27where
26:28he
26:28may
26:28have
26:28gone
26:28gone
26:29out
26:29of
26:29town
26:30for
26:30something.
26:42After
26:43the
26:43patrol
26:43officer
26:43talks
26:44to
26:44her,
26:44he
26:44calls
26:45the
26:45missing
26:45persons
26:45detective
26:46and
26:46says,
26:46look,
26:47boss,
26:47I can't
26:47prove it,
26:48but
26:48something
26:49is up.
26:49This
26:49woman is
26:50not
26:50acting
26:50right.
26:53I
26:53kept
26:54in
26:54contact
26:54with
26:54Nikki,
26:56trying
26:56to figure
26:57out what
26:57everyone
26:57is
26:58doing,
26:58what
26:59she's
26:59doing.
27:00Nikki
27:00must
27:01have
27:01known
27:01that
27:01I
27:01wasn't
27:02getting
27:03the
27:04answers
27:04I
27:04wanted.
27:05I
27:05said,
27:06okay,
27:07I'm
27:08coming
27:08up.
27:09I'm
27:09leaving
27:09in the
27:10morning.
27:11The
27:12drive
27:12was
27:14long.
27:15I
27:16was
27:16calling
27:16the
27:17fire
27:17departments
27:18and
27:18going
27:19to get
27:19a
27:19search
27:19party
27:19together.
27:20I
27:20made
27:20a
27:20missing
27:21persons
27:22flyer.
27:23We
27:24thought
27:24maybe he
27:24just
27:25was
27:25confused
27:26and
27:26walked
27:26out
27:26the
27:27door
27:27had
27:27another
27:27episode.
27:29So we
27:29were
27:29loading
27:30up like
27:30we're
27:30going to
27:30tromps
27:31through
27:31the
27:31woods.
27:32At
27:32the
27:32same
27:33time,
27:33I
27:34had
27:34flashbacks
27:35of
27:35these
27:36hypoglycemic
27:38episodes that
27:39Nikki
27:39herself
27:40diagnosed him
27:41of having.
27:43And I
27:44remember
27:44this
27:46picture of
27:47the insulin
27:47bottle
27:47and
27:49Jimmy
27:49saying that
27:50Nikki
27:51was
27:51drugging
27:52him.
27:54Insulin
27:54is used
27:55to
27:56moderate
27:56blood
27:57sugar
27:58levels
27:58in
27:58people
27:59who
27:59are
27:59diabetic.
28:01If
28:01someone
28:01was
28:02given
28:02insulin
28:03who
28:04didn't
28:04need
28:04it,
28:04it
28:04could
28:05drop
28:05their
28:05blood
28:06sugar
28:06to
28:06a
28:07dangerous
28:07level.
28:09And so
28:09I asked
28:10Jamie,
28:10do you
28:10think
28:10she gave
28:12them
28:12insulin?
28:16With
28:17Jamie
28:17and
28:17Chris
28:17approaching
28:18from
28:18Florida
28:19and
28:19James
28:20now
28:20flying
28:20in
28:20from
28:21Buffalo,
28:22police
28:22receive
28:22a
28:23shocking
28:23tip.
28:24Out of
28:25the blue,
28:25they get
28:26a call
28:26from this
28:26woman and
28:27she says,
28:27hey, I
28:29know Jimmy
28:29Capello's
28:30wife,
28:31Nikki
28:31Capello,
28:31and she
28:32just called
28:33me and
28:33told me
28:34that she
28:35killed him
28:35with insulin
28:36and that
28:37his body
28:38is in
28:38her
28:38garage.
28:41Soon
28:42as he
28:42hears
28:42that,
28:43the
28:43investigator
28:44calls
28:44patrol
28:45and says,
28:45I need
28:45the closest
28:46unit to
28:46the house
28:47to go
28:47pull Nikki
28:48Capello
28:48out and
28:49sit on
28:49her until
28:50I get
28:50there.
28:51Nikki
28:51Capello
28:51comes out
28:52to the
28:52porch.
28:53In an
28:54effort to
28:55speed this
28:55up,
28:57would you
28:57mind if I
28:58checked
28:58yourself to
28:59make sure
29:00that your
29:00husband's not
29:01in the
29:01crawl space
29:02where he
29:02was working
29:03or something
29:03or if he
29:04was upstairs
29:04like an
29:06attic or
29:06something?
29:07Do you
29:08understand what
29:08I'm saying?
29:09or if
29:10that's a
29:10problem?
29:11That's
29:11okay.
29:12Okay.
29:12Okay.
29:12Okay.
29:14Let me
29:14back up and
29:19be clear for
29:19you.
29:20If there is
29:20an issue,
29:21it is
29:21okay.
29:23You are
29:23under no
29:24obligation to
29:25sign it.
29:26You're
29:26not.
29:28Okay.
29:28With my
29:28understanding
29:29that you
29:30were going
29:30to do
29:30any
29:31consent
29:31to
29:31look through
29:32your
29:32property
29:32to see
29:33if you're
29:33or
29:34if
29:35that's
29:35a
29:35problem
29:36that's
29:37okay.
29:40When I
29:41arrived at
29:42the house,
29:43Nikki was
29:44sitting
29:44outside on
29:45the porch
29:46with the
29:47police.
29:48She saw
29:49me from
29:49the porch
29:50but there
29:51was no
29:52acknowledgement.
29:54You know,
29:55I had a
29:55lot of
29:55anger
29:56going
29:56through
29:56me and
29:57I was
29:57all revved
29:58up and
29:58ready to
30:00knock the
30:00door down.
30:02He
30:02sat down
30:02and
30:02talked
30:03and
30:03I
30:04told you
30:04what we're
30:05going to
30:05do.
30:05We're
30:05going to
30:05take a
30:06ride right
30:06now and
30:07I am
30:08going to
30:08get a
30:08search warrant
30:08and take
30:09that.
30:09That way
30:10you don't
30:10feel
30:10pressured.
30:11Right
30:11now I'm
30:12not feeling
30:12comfortable
30:12because I
30:13feel like
30:13you feel
30:14pressured.
30:16Investigators
30:17escort Nikki
30:18to CID.
30:19Someone's
30:20going to
30:20let me
30:20find out
30:21about my
30:22daughter,
30:22right?
30:22We will
30:23make phone
30:23calls for
30:24your daughter
30:24as soon as
30:24I get
30:25down there.
30:25We get
30:25you someplace
30:26cool where
30:26we can
30:27call.
30:29We'll
30:29see about
30:30all that.
30:30We'll
30:31handle all
30:31that once
30:32we get
30:32down there,
30:32okay?
30:33It's okay.
30:36Here we go.
30:37As soon as
30:44he's got
30:44the warrant,
30:45they go
30:45in and
30:46as soon as
30:47he opens
30:47the front
30:47door,
30:48he says,
30:49you can
30:49smell death.
30:51He goes
30:51straight to
30:52the garage.
30:55There's a
30:55Corvette that
30:56Jimmy was
30:56working on
30:57rebuilding.
30:58There he
30:58is.
30:59And in
31:00the passenger
31:00side of
31:01the Corvette
31:01is Jimmy's
31:02body.
31:05He's in
31:05his underwear,
31:06he's laying
31:07on a
31:08tarp that's
31:08half wrapped
31:09around his
31:09legs and
31:09his legs
31:10are shoved
31:10halfway into
31:11the car.
31:13And the
31:14body is not
31:15rotting yet,
31:16but it is
31:16bloated.
31:18It was
31:19clear from
31:19the way the
31:20body was
31:20found that
31:21that is not
31:21where Jimmy
31:22had died.
31:23Somebody
31:23had put
31:24him in
31:24the tarp
31:25and pulled
31:26him into
31:27the garage
31:27and tried
31:28to lift him
31:29into the
31:29car and
31:30put him
31:30in the
31:30passenger
31:30seat.
31:32They'd
31:32gotten the
31:32legs in,
31:33but the
31:33torso was
31:34heavier than
31:35they'd
31:35anticipated.
31:36And so
31:36it was
31:36essentially
31:37a half
31:37done job.
31:39The scene
31:40is photographed.
31:41Jimmy's body
31:42is sent for
31:42autopsy and
31:44officers carry
31:44out a search
31:45of the
31:45property.
31:46In the
31:46bedside table
31:47on her
31:47side of
31:48the bed,
31:49they found
31:49a single
31:50unused
31:50insulin needle,
31:52which was
31:53collected and
31:54taken into
31:54evidence.
31:58It wasn't
31:58until I
31:59arrived at
32:00the house
32:01that the
32:03detective
32:03tell us
32:05there is a
32:05body inside
32:06and I
32:08lost it.
32:09My father
32:10was beside
32:11himself.
32:13I can't
32:13even describe
32:14it.
32:14It was
32:14just a big
32:16hole,
32:18you know,
32:19being driven
32:19into you.
32:20We all knew
32:22in the
32:22back of
32:22our heads
32:23that
32:25Nikki did
32:25it.
32:25It's full
32:50of car parts.
32:52I
32:52would get
32:54chewed out.
32:54point the
32:55last time
32:55you were
32:56in the
32:56garage,
32:56Nikki.
32:59I want
33:00you to
33:00do me a
33:00favor.
33:01More than
33:01that,
33:02I want
33:02yourself a
33:03favor and
33:04your child
33:05a favor.
33:06This is
33:07going a
33:08path you
33:09don't want
33:09it to go
33:10because you
33:11are not
33:11being
33:11completely
33:12honest with
33:12me.
33:13And I
33:13know that
33:13for a
33:14fact.
33:16I'm
33:16trying to
33:17give you
33:17a chance
33:17to pump
33:18the brakes
33:18for a
33:19minute.
33:20Think
33:20about your
33:21child and
33:23yourself.
33:24and I'm
33:25going to
33:25ask you
33:25again.
33:28Why did
33:29you not
33:29want me
33:29in that
33:30garage?
33:38We both
33:39know the
33:39answer.
33:40Because I
33:40found Jim.
33:44Because what?
33:45I found
33:46Jim.
33:47Okay.
33:48You found
33:49Jim what?
33:49I found
33:53Jim dead.
33:56And
33:56chased that
33:57Corvette.
33:57I chased
33:58the Corvette.
34:02Nikki.
34:04Sir?
34:06As a
34:07parent, I'm
34:08going to keep
34:09bringing this
34:09up to you.
34:10I know.
34:10I've got
34:11Riley.
34:13Now she's
34:14lost her
34:14dad.
34:15no matter
34:17what happens
34:18going forward,
34:20there is the
34:21path where we
34:22tell the
34:22truth and
34:24we probably
34:26get better
34:26treatment
34:27throughout the
34:27system than
34:28we do if we
34:29maintain a
34:29lie that's
34:30going to
34:30unravel very,
34:32very easily.
34:35Why did
34:36you not tell
34:36us that
34:37body was
34:37in the
34:37garage?
34:38I was
34:39scared.
34:39Of?
34:40I don't
34:42know the
34:42way that
34:43the way
34:44that it
34:44would look.
34:45I mean,
34:45I filed
34:45this in
34:46person's
34:46report and
34:47then dad
34:48given he
34:49then the
34:50car in
34:51the
34:51garage.
34:53That is
34:54why I
34:54was scared.
34:57Before we
34:57go on,
34:59I want
34:59legal advice.
35:01Do you
35:01want legal
35:02advice?
35:02I can't
35:02give you
35:03legal advice.
35:03No,
35:03I'm saying
35:04I would
35:04like to
35:04talk to
35:05a lawyer.
35:05Okay.
35:06That is
35:07absolutely
35:08cover my
35:08butt.
35:09That's
35:09not me.
35:09I have
35:10no doubt
35:10that would
35:11be your
35:12priority.
35:13Ultimately,
35:14they have
35:14to cut
35:15off
35:15questioning,
35:16but at
35:16that
35:16point,
35:17they have
35:17enough.
35:18They have
35:18means,
35:18they have
35:19opportunity,
35:19they have
35:20an insulin
35:20needle in
35:20the house.
35:22This
35:22officer is
35:23going to
35:23put you
35:24in handcuffs,
35:25we're going
35:25to walk
35:25you out,
35:26and you
35:26will be
35:26built in
35:27jail for
35:28murder.
35:28Can I
35:29ask a
35:29question?
35:30What
35:30do I
35:30do?
35:32I
35:32am on
35:34certain
35:34beds that
35:35I can't
35:35just
35:35immediately
35:36stop.
35:37I will
35:37withdraw.
35:38They have
35:38doctors at
35:39the jail
35:40that you
35:40can speak
35:41to.
35:41They have
35:41medical staff
35:42and they
35:42can get
35:43you.
35:44If it's
35:44something you're
35:45prescribed and
35:46it's something
35:46you need,
35:47then they'll
35:47take care of
35:48you.
35:48can you
35:50tell,
35:50you said
35:51you're
35:51going to
35:51go on
35:52long
35:52back?
35:52I can.
35:53Can you
35:53tell her to
35:54get Riley
35:54from
35:55I don't
35:57know.
35:57I think
35:58maybe
35:58Jamie.
36:00I don't
36:01want Jamie
36:01to get
36:02Riley.
36:02I want
36:03my mother
36:03to get
36:04Riley.
36:04Well,
36:04we'll work
36:05all that
36:05out.
36:05She may
36:06already
36:06have her.
36:06I don't
36:07know.
36:10We
36:10obtained
36:11emergency
36:11custody
36:12from the
36:13courts
36:13for Riley.
36:14We
36:15made
36:16sure
36:16that
36:17she
36:17was
36:17in
36:18our
36:18hands
36:18and
36:19we
36:19were
36:19not
36:19going
36:19to
36:20let
36:20her
36:20go.
36:21Jamie
36:22shares
36:22with
36:22investigators
36:23her
36:24suspicions
36:24of what
36:25happened
36:25to
36:25Jimmy.
36:26The
36:27word
36:27insulin
36:27keeps
36:28coming
36:28up.
36:29My
36:30first
36:30thought
36:30is
36:30I
36:31need
36:31to
36:31learn
36:31about
36:32insulin.
36:33The
36:34investigators
36:35were
36:35suspicious
36:36that
36:37Mr.
36:37Capello
36:37had died
36:38from
36:38an
36:38insulin
36:39overdose.
36:40Insulin
36:41is a
36:41very
36:42unstable
36:43substance
36:43and
36:44so
36:45over
36:45time
36:46the
36:46actual
36:47insulin
36:47will
36:48break
36:48down.
36:50So
36:50for
36:50someone
36:51who
36:51has
36:51committed
36:52murder
36:52it
36:53would
36:53be
36:53in
36:54their
36:54best
36:54interest
36:55to
36:55allow
36:56a
36:56body
36:56to
36:57decompose
36:58over
36:58a
36:58couple
36:59of
36:59days
36:59so
37:01that
37:01that
37:02particular
37:02substance
37:03would
37:04no
37:04longer
37:05be
37:05detectable
37:07at
37:07a
37:07reliable
37:07level.
37:10When
37:10I
37:10learned
37:11this
37:11it's
37:11like
37:11a
37:11light
37:12bulb
37:12that's
37:12gone
37:12on
37:12and
37:13all
37:13of
37:14these
37:14weird
37:14things
37:15about
37:15the
37:15way
37:15Nicky
37:15Capello
37:16was
37:16pushing
37:17people
37:17away
37:17and
37:17trying
37:18to
37:18buy
37:18time
37:18it
37:19all
37:19makes
37:19perfect
37:19sense.
37:22But
37:22this
37:23case
37:23made me
37:23nervous
37:24because
37:24we
37:24didn't
37:24have
37:24a
37:25smoking
37:25gun.
37:26We're
37:26never
37:26going
37:26to
37:27be
37:27able
37:27to
37:27prove
37:28positively
37:28that
37:28it
37:29was
37:29insulin.
37:30There
37:30was
37:31nobody
37:31that
37:31saw
37:31the
37:31murder.
37:32We
37:32have
37:32no
37:32eyewitnesses
37:33to
37:33anything.
37:34This
37:34is
37:34going
37:35to
37:35be
37:35a
37:35circumstantial
37:43We
37:44lived
37:44on
37:44edge
37:45with
37:46the
37:46fear
37:46that
37:47she
37:48would
37:48remain
37:48free.
37:50All
37:50this
37:50time
37:51you
37:51know
37:52just
37:52afraid
37:53is
37:53she
37:53going
37:54to
37:54get
37:54off?
37:55But
37:55several
37:55months
37:56after
37:56the
37:56murder
37:57investigators
37:58receive a
37:58game
37:59changing
37:59call
38:00from a
38:00friend
38:00of
38:01Nicky
38:01Capello.
38:02That
38:03person
38:03says
38:04that
38:04about
38:04a

38:04before

38:09She
38:09says
38:10she
38:10and
38:10Nicky
38:10were
38:10joking
38:10as
38:11people
38:11do
38:11oh
38:13that
38:14kind
38:14of

38:14and
38:15then
38:15Nicky
38:15tells
