00:30THE END
01:00THE END
01:29is our greatest treasure oh can i stop you for a minute uh this is peter oh i said i'm terribly
01:35sorry i've forgotten your name barry barry yes of course how stupid of me peter barry june chalice
01:43how do you do robert duncan how do you do how do you do peter's with uk television he's working on
01:48a series about um what was it now and new developments in metallurgy oh yes bit out of
01:53my line i'm afraid new developments in metallurgy oh dear yes i know what you mean
01:58uh we run a weekly program called the latest in science oh and this should be good for three or
02:04four programs i hope you won't think me dense but uh what are you doing in an observatory well
02:09all's gristow our mill and dr ramsey here has very kindly offered to assist us with a program on
02:14astronomy a series of programs i missed him by inches in london so i thought i'd try and run
02:18into earth here in scotland and he caught me actually it's these two you should be talking
02:22to i'm only a visitor here dr grundy's in charge but he's in canada how many programs are you doing
02:27on astronomy six i think six yes i know it's not enough what are you calling them
02:34hmm oh i don't know the floor of heaven perhaps
02:42what are you thinking about what oh i was i was just wondering if there's anyone anything up there
02:51sending us radio signals perhaps century after century i wondered if anyone might be receiving
02:57them take a long time the nearest star is four light years away but we've been sending signals
03:02into space haven't we you never know someone or something might pick them up intelligence out there
03:08maybe if so let's hope they have the intelligence to leave us alone
03:15what on earth is that oh that's what we call a blink comparator a what a blink microscope you take two
03:21pictures of the same star region taken at different times and you superimpose them like this i'm sorry
03:27i don't get it well normally stars remain unchanged in their positions well that's why they're called fixed
03:32stars but if anything new appears like a new star for instance it'll appear on one plate and not the
03:37other and by flicking the plates on and off you can see the stars blinking on and off you can observe
03:43the effect very easily even in a region crowded with stars oh i see look at this
03:52oh i see just off center there it's blinking at me exactly those two plates were taken at an
03:58interval of three weeks and since the first plate was taken the new objects appear and what is it
04:04it's a nova a huge explosion in space a nova well the only nova i'm familiar with is a boss in that
04:11what and never mind oh i see well look let me explain every now and again a star so faint that one
04:17can't normally see it explodes like uh like a hydrogen bomb it's still just a point of light however
04:23because of the distance let's see now this star cluster for instance that's about what 1800 light
04:30years away that's quite an explosion as it all happened a long time ago of course this bang took
04:34place about the time of nero we're just getting the news of it now as it were well that's good stuff
04:39we must try and get that into the program well i must be off well dr ranzi i'm very grateful for all
04:44your help perhaps you'll call in and see us the moment you arrive in london uk television will find me
04:48certainly mr murray barry oh i'm terribly sorry goodbye goodbye goodbye goodbye it isn't an over
04:59what it isn't an over sir what do you mean look at that september the 10th nothing
05:08yeah september the 15th it's there
05:11yes september the 25th now look at that good heavens look at the proper motion june get a message
05:24off to harvard when sir first observed a position proper motion and magnitude we must try and uh trace
05:32the speed come on come on have a good look at this
05:52diana
05:56get me another coffee will you
05:57here it is thank you not over my scripts love what's merchant talking about thermodynamics
06:08hello hello nobody doing anything hello peter how are you hello my lovely here did you uh get hold of
06:14ramsey yes i roughed out a program he's going to do six programs for us starting on the 40th good man
06:20what about money oh well that's up to you i told him to contact you the moment he arrived right
06:27peter uh-huh when did you see him a few days ago why did you say anything about a comet
06:35there's a a comet no why oh he did mention a star that they'd seen on the great telescope uh what was
06:41he said it was called a nova that's a star exploding in space well it isn't we've had a whole lot of
06:47reports these last few days about a comet look russia south africa japan the united states half the
06:52world's observatories have reported it they all say the first report came from ramsey
06:59then why would he say it was a nova exactly he's england's top astronomer an expert on spectroscopy
07:07fellow of the royal society do you think you'd make a simple mistake like that
07:11no i don't excuse me he's here who dr ramsey he's in reception ask him to come up peter this is your
07:17chance he's a balsy old bird hates authority loves to throw a span into the works yeah remember the row
07:23we had with the atomic energy people last year yes i covered it it's even got a story trip him up
07:27ask him why he said it was a nova when he knew damn well it wasn't ask me if he's under security
07:31ryan dr ramsey so nice to meet you how do you do uh you know peter of course yes nice to see you
07:38again did you have a good trip yes thank you it was very nice uh diane i'll get us some coffee
07:42i hope you don't mind paper cups not at all uh will you sit down i'll just get these scripts out
07:48of your way thank you uh over to you peter right thank you uh well doctor i've uh roughed out a script
07:55for the first program perhaps you'd like to have a look at it thank you uh doctor you remember that
08:03object you showed me at the observatory yes we've all been doing quite a lot of work on it
08:07there's ricover at palomar young in south africa and bran off in russia how far away is it well it's
08:13difficult to establish the distance which is several million miles several million it must be enormous
08:18yes it is well let's say for example that it's three million miles away it would have to be at least
08:24six miles across to be visible even to our most powerful instruments six miles on the other hand
08:29it might be 10 or 20 times further away in which case would have to be much larger and what's
08:35happening about it now well chalice and duncan are working on it at the observatory they're going to
08:39let me have their results as soon as possible when will that be in about a week i think
08:46one thing's quite clear though it's not a terrestrial origin and it's not a comet no we're
08:53quite certain of that then what is it that's what the observatories of the world are trying so hard to
09:01find out proper motion 14 seconds of arc in 24 hours ascension 24 16 4 declination 39 14 12 further
09:15further observations will be made
09:17i just heard from georgia back
09:45i've just heard from georgia back they've established the distance i'm more interested
09:48in finding its course looks to me as if it's going to come pretty close well i've got the graphs
09:53this way it should approach within a few hundred thousand miles quite a spectacle yes and it's
09:57growing brighter should be visible without instruments in a couple of days how's mike getting
10:02on stuff's pouring in all the time he's feeding the computer as fast as he can but the results
10:07won't be through for a while shouldn't you have some rest you've been at it since six o'clock i'm
10:15almost through robert what do you make of it the object i wish i knew i've never seen anything like it
10:23before nor has anyone else it seems it's the brightness i find most strange it's not what you'd
10:28expect from a a cold body of that size perhaps it's composed of snow or frozen hydrogen that would have a
10:34higher reflecting power oh yes its mass must be enormous even if it is snow and if it's rock
10:41have they worked it out yet it's mass no ah i've been comparing its course with the earth's orbit
10:48a duncan here yes i see
11:00thank you well how close is it going to come are we going to be able to see it
11:05it's heading straight for us
11:19so
11:35so
11:49thank you
12:03ah prime minister here's the report thank you what time does ramsey arrive he was due in a london
12:08airport an hour ago i sent a car of course so he should be here at any moment now good
12:13well according to this there's no change object z as they're calling it now is approaching the earth
12:21at high speed when will it strike if this report is correct in about six weeks six weeks
12:34if my memory is correct the earth moves around the sun at a speed of 16 miles per second
12:40this thing's moving at about 15 isn't it that's right i'm thinking of relative speeds john
12:46if the earth and this thing are moving in the same direction the speed of impact might be quite
12:51low there might be merely a graze unfortunately this object is approaching the earth directly into
12:56our orbit so we combine the speeds 13 miles a second that's right
13:02good evening prime minister good evening ramsey do sit down
13:10you have your report for me yes
13:16there's no change i'm afraid can you say whether it will collide directly with the earth or
13:22strike a glancing blow its course at present is almost in the plane of the earth's orbit
13:27it's likely for reasons which i won't bother with at the moment to strike a glancing blow
13:32but even a glancing blow with an object six miles across traveling at a combined speed of 30 miles a
13:37second is likely to be a serious matter how serious well that depends on its composition
13:43there are two kinds of meteors the stony and the metallic if this object is stony then there's a chance
13:49that we might survive the impact some of us at any rate if it's metallic yes
13:57then i'm afraid the impact would be quite sufficient to destroy all life on earth
14:09i'm sorry to have to tell you this grim news you have no way of telling whether it's stony or
14:21metallic i'm afraid not these shelters we're going to build will they help as you know every country
14:29on earth is planning shelters will they be of any use not if this thing is metallic
14:33there is one hope though only a slight hope i admit but well go on we've managed to chart the
14:39course of this object with some considerable accuracy i believe that we might be able to destroy it
14:45or at least deflect it from its course in space how do you mean with the bomb do you mean hit it with
14:51a missile of some sort sure could that be done it's impossible but the problem of hitting with the bomb
14:56of sufficient power to destroy it is very difficult we would need a vehicle at least three times as
15:02powerful as anything that we have at the moment and we would need the equivalent of a 400 megaton bomb
15:09400 megaton that's twice as large as anything in existence yes it is could we build such a machine
15:16in time well i'm not an engineer sir but i believe that it could be done if we pool our resources with
15:21the americans and the russians then the project is feasible
15:27i'm attending the world conference next week i'll bring the matter up
15:32well that's that
16:00so
16:06tired a bit
16:08i find it so strange to think that we're two of the 20 or 30 people in the whole world who are in
16:13on the secret what do you think they'll do when they find out you mean i don't know
16:19depends on your temperament i suppose some people pray some people take to drink thanks
16:26some people do themselves in rather than face it but most people carry on as usual i should think
16:33there's nothing much else they can do of course they may be able to keep it from everyone until until
16:36the big bang well i suppose that would be best everybody looking at it brighter than the full moon the most
16:44striking thing the world has ever seen and then the impact all over in a moment
16:51no fuss or pain what will you do what with my last few days
17:03well
17:03i'd like to begin by marrying you i mean it june i can't offer you much future six weeks to be exact
17:14but i'd like to spend them with you what do you say
17:20uh
17:37dr ramsey i must get up to the box uh good luck it's all going to be split
17:41thank you there's no need to be nervous we've had a good run through and most of it's on film as you
17:45know when you want film you can use your script and uh the floor manager will tell you when we're
17:49coming back to you now i'm sorry we had to cut it down but the prime minister's on at nine as you
17:53know yes i know i wonder what's about a crisis i suppose yes i suppose so 30 seconds i must go
17:59good luck thank you what are you doing here we start in a moment well we're from the observatory in
18:03scott we came straight here to wish him luck get rid of him for heaven's sake come on this way
18:09good luck good luck oh thank you 15 seconds good luck doctor don't worry about anything
18:14give me five doctor can you sit here please
18:1910 seconds nine eight seven six five music on captions stand by
18:31few of us could have looked at the night sky without beginning to ask some profound questions
18:38is space infinite how did those millions of stars those galaxies thousands of light years across
18:45and millions of light years away come into existence did the universe have a beginning
18:50and will it have an end in the next six weeks
18:59in in the next six weeks i will try to give the answers to some of these questions
19:07six weeks is a short time what's the matter with him come on man come on for a moment he was going
19:15to break down so did i you should never come through this let us consider the next way captain
19:21you're june chalice aren't you yes you're duncan yes security yes special branch now won't you stay
19:32if i may i mean that the whole process probably took millions of years at this very moment there are
19:37thousands of gaseous clouds in space well thank you doctor now before we close the program i'd like to
19:46ask your opinion on something which i'm sure is in the mind of all our viewers this new object that's
19:50been seen in the sky is causing such a sensation throughout the world has anything like it ever
19:55been seen before how do you mean well is it a comet oh i see no it's not a comet a comet as i've said
20:01before is not a solid object it it usually though not always exhibits a tail the object that we're
20:08seeing has no tail it appears to be solid like a meteor meteor how far away is it oh several million
20:14miles of course in astronomical terms it's really very close but it is several million miles away
20:18is it likely to get any nearer yes in the next few weeks it's likely to become a very brilliant object
20:25how close will it come to the earth quite close yes but how close doctor is there any danger of
20:31it striking the earth it's most unlikely but it could happen yes it could happen the earth is
20:36constantly thank you dr rams that was the first of a series of talks on astronomy by dr ramsey
20:41entitled the great machine that's all for this week until next week good night
20:56that was fine fine you're clear now thank you excuse me can i speak to you for a moment
21:00what do you mean by barging in like us don't you know that i'm from security i don't care if you're
21:04albus presley i won't have any what prime minister's on now i think he will explain if you will watch
21:12i come before you tonight with news of the gravest importance to this country and to the world
21:19those of you who are at work i ask you to lay that work aside for the moment and listen to what i have to
21:25say a few hours ago i was present at a conference at which every nation of the world was represented
21:35because the whole world is threatened by a danger which transcends political and national considerations
21:44of any kind the message i bring is this an object from outer space may well pass close with the earth
21:54before going on into the vastness of space it is possible and i tell you this in the light of the
22:00best scientific advice available that it may strike the earth a glancing blow it is even possible that it
22:07may score what i can only describe as a direct hit it is for this reason that work has begun on the
22:15building of shelters against the impact as i told you this thing may well pass as far should this
22:23object collide with the earth the shock would be very great and the provision of adequate shelters
22:30is the best chance we have of preventing severe loss of life
22:35it is for this reason that i have asked members of the opposition to join me at this moment in forming
22:43a national government so that this country may be truly united in the face of the grave danger
22:51in the meantime i ask for calm i ask all those of you who are listening to me to set an example of
22:58courage and discipline in face of the grave danger which threatens us all good night
23:07so that's it i suppose you knew all about it yes i did well doctor how long have we got about
23:12six weeks for security reasons i'd rather you didn't answer that now just a minute who the hell
23:16you think you are will you come with me sir you too miss jealous mr duncan if you don't mind
23:21i'm sorry to have to hustle you off like this sir but there's a plane waiting there's a car
23:24outside where are we going woomera sir in australia woomera yes sir that's why i must ask you to
23:30hurry the plane leaves in a couple of hours that's what i do about clothes and things
23:33no well well so that's it oh devil no wonder he was so rattled he knew all the time but he was under
23:39pressure from security what a day let's get out of here good night brian good night tomorrow
23:45see you tomorrow let's go and have a coffee it's good to get a bit of fresh air yeah
23:55is it my imagination or is it getting brighter it's your imagination
23:59is it my imagination just six weeks to live
24:16so
24:22so
