00:13you will die out there and i can save your life that was an incredibly intense scene to start
00:23doctor who on we reveal how the dot and bubble went from low-tech to high-spec tell me you're on doctor
00:32who without telling me you're on doctor who we unravel the making of those homicidal slugs
00:38and spoiler alert we've got an unleashed exclusive clip from the next doctor who episode
00:47welcome to doctor who unleashed
00:53cardiff bay barrage 17th of december 2022 it's 11 o'clock at night minus two degrees
01:04shooty gattoir is about to shoot his very first scene of the series
01:09i suppose i should say thank you it's okay do you know we handed that script to shooty and i was
01:21wary i was thinking my god especially this is the first thing he shot i have a ship it's called
01:27the tardis hit that blue box it is astonishing because he comes in he did the regeneration
01:33way back with david but actually the scene at the end of episode five is his first day with us
01:38his first proper day
01:40that reveal at the end of the air it was heartbreaking you probably do realize in the
01:47yeah but it's the moment when we look around and everyone is white and you're just like
01:52ah
01:53we can't travel with you what why not because you sir are not one of us we were all kind of
02:01holding our press thinking that's no way you'd start any lead actor off we talked about it should
02:05we reschedule should we let him settle in should we hold the scene off and in the end we decided to
02:09go for it and bang that's a great actor he just hits it and it's one of the most remarkable performances
02:14i've ever seen i don't care what you think you can say whatever you want you can think
02:25absolutely anything
02:27i will do anything
02:33if you just allow me
02:39to save your lives
02:43you will die out there
02:48and i can save your lives
02:51now let me
02:53it'll be interesting to see the response to this episode i think the main response to this
03:20episode is going to be about the ending what we can't tell is how many people will have worked
03:24that out before the ending because they've seen white person after white person after white person
03:28and television these days is very diverse i wonder will you be 10 minutes into it will you be 15
03:33will you be 20 before you start to think everyone in this community is white
03:36and if you don't think that why didn't you
03:39so that's going to be interesting i hope it's one of those pieces of television you'll see
03:43and always remember
03:44my first day on doctor who was that episode episode five um the barrage scene and that was
03:53an incredibly intense scene to start doctor who on but very exciting to get my teeth into it
04:01shot in december 2022 and january 2023 dot and bubble was filmed side by side with 73 yards
04:19the doctor and ruby take a bit of a back seat in this episode and apart from the final scene
04:25shooty and milly do all of their performing down an auto cue lens first things first i'm here to
04:31save you leaving center stage to lindy pepper bean a character who ultimately reveals herself to be
04:37entitled and racist she's played by upcoming stage and screen actor carly cook can i run into it
04:44yeah it was quite difficult to find the right person to play lindy because she is in the end an
04:51absolutely abhorrent character but you've got to be with her on her way there and she's got to be
04:57sort of really flaky and breezy and a bit annoying from the top do i need to pee your own content is
05:03zero for the third day in a row well done lindy so she had to sort of encompass all these things in
05:09one hit sorry i'm sorry just that's the first time i've ever done that oh no well sorry every day
05:17we walked past monsters no i mean the hug that was your first hug yeah and then once she turns
05:22you have to be really surprised he said he was born richard coombs because i know everything about
05:32him he changed his name to ricky september when he reached 50 000 followers but check your files he
05:36was born coombs see he comes before peace we found this amazing actress lindy called cali cook
05:43she was unanimously our favorite choice in the auditions and she was the only one who really got
05:50that transition so brilliantly and sort of played all the characters all at once oh my poor friends
05:58it was it was hard i've never done it before i have a complex of having to be liked all the time
06:04but i guess i just had to you know see her as she is and i had to see her without judgment in order to
06:11play her truthfully that i'm playing a character i hope that that's you know that's not real um but i mean
06:19yeah i can be the first to say she's a psychopath
06:21as cali quite rightly points out lindy pepperbean is a character she's acting in real life the two
06:29couldn't be more different and action do i need to pee this is your first scene day one day one scene one
06:38this is the scene first scene yeah yeah i hope you know because i don't i don't ever know so i'm reading
06:45everyone else's lines off camera and then these all leave tomorrow and then i'm on my own for the
06:50next six weeks six weeks it's just you and you know is that that's gonna be quite strange isn't it
06:54yeah yeah but before cali gets to go solo there's the small matter of killing off ricky september
07:00it was great to see cali cook go to this incredible character transformation on this day
07:08because she's kind of this lovable if slightly narcissistic person but who you really basically
07:14like until she does this awful thing in this scene where essentially she kills her love interest
07:19to save herself it's kind of the first reveal of like what a monster she actually is
07:24she's rich she's uh vile actually and and sends that boy to his death
07:30brilliant cali as lindy pepperbean is literally in every single moment of the entire episode
07:38so it's unusual to hand over not just a guest lead role but the lead of the show
07:42action i'm going to get eaten i'd never seen a doctor who episode that didn't really feature
07:48the doctor in the way that this doesn't like it felt like almost like a little feature film
07:52it's not the first time an episode has been led by someone other than the doctor or the companion
07:58i think someone told me that no one has led a doctor who episode since carrie milligan
08:02so i mean if it if that works out that would be nice
08:06who are you i'm a time traveler in 2007 carrie milligan starred as sally sparrow in blink
08:15a doctor light episode that also saw the first appearance of the terrifying weeping angels
08:21you keep looking at this one don't blink remember what he said don't even blink
08:25the role of sally helped propel carrie milligan to hollywood superstardom
08:30so no pressure cali
08:32and what better place for lindy to hide in plain sight than party city fine time
08:42fine time is kind of like it's love island for the rich of the home world they go there
08:49they do a couple of hours work at data processing then they party all day long
08:52who are you my name's ruby sunday hi you're not on my friends list it really reminded me of black
08:59mirror fine time it's so weird in it because that is probably what the future is going to turn out
09:04to be and i think russell has a knack for that he does predict the future quite a lot dot
09:08and bubble
09:10the dot is their form of social media it's it's a little hovering dot that projects
09:15all the friends and all the family and all the faces of people in a literal bubble around you
09:21so they are living in a bubble it's like a metaphor
09:24art imitates life doesn't it you know the perils of of social media and what it can do to people in
09:33the real world is very much yeah you see that on screen that whole episode shows the base of the
09:39human condition and how easy it is to get there oh it's so unfair now we have to work fine time never
09:46told us how boring it would be it's a visual way of sort of showing i think where we're heading in
09:51society it's not just having a close friends list it's living your close friends list and allowing
09:56no uh different points of view into your into your circle oh you're no fun it's exploring that it's
10:02exploring how that blinds you to the world it's in doctor who fashion that metaphor literally becomes
10:07a monster you can't see right next you beating you up but beyond that it's about the the society
10:13that's formed on fine time the um at the end of the episode shows you exactly what kind of world
10:17world so if the dot and bubble is our future would you want one absolutely not it's terrifying it's
10:25gonna kill me for a day or a week just for the fun of it give it a go for sure but i don't think
10:33i'd want that all day every day i think i get too consumed you get tunnel vision i get quite
10:37close to five so i'm really stressed out with always it does take a lot of the decisions for
10:42you it does make life easier you know i can just about get away with like sat nav yeah you're not
10:47selling the dots for anyone here i don't think anyone should get a dot i do love my phone don't get me
10:52wrong i'm not one of them but i wouldn't want a dot that would kill me absolutely not
10:59can barely handle instagram it's gonna get me started on tiktok
11:10still to come on doctor who unleashed i try not to be sluggish on my work experience
11:15thank you oh hello it's quite slippery isn't it
11:20the cast and crew bust out their best moves
11:22and spoilers we've got an exclusive clip from the next episode of doctor who but first
11:35from the crinoids to the reapers to the vasta narada there have always been doctor who creatures
11:42who like to make a meal of things but never has there been a more gloopy slurpy ognali eater
11:48than the man traps dreamt up and sketched by russell t davis millennium fx were tasked with
11:56bringing these psycho slugs to life i think the man traps are probably the most classic doctor who
12:03monster there is in the new series there's been a lot of those kind of things in doctor who over the
12:08years so there's already a kind of language to them that you're going with it's very exciting to get
12:15a new design for doctor who monster i love handing these things over to neil gordon and the team and
12:20they add the tentacles and the claws and the fun about this has been like saying more gunge wet them
12:25wet the weapons with a dripping vial disgusting marvelous that's what the doctor who monster should be
12:32but before the gunge neil and his team had to make the man traps all of this was hand sculpted by the
12:38the team i think it took about a week a week and a half so all of this was like clay sculpted you know
12:44carved in texture detail i know it's weird can i can i can i touch it yeah yeah feel free i mean
12:51there may be there may be some sticky parts so just avoid where where darren's working oh oh it feels
12:57how i think it would feel oh yeah how's that alien and fleshy you know the man traps have been built
13:04using foam latex panels that are glued together to create the seven foot creature it's a painstaking
13:11process and why do it when lots of the detail will be replaced with computer generated vfx a lot of
13:18our work is you know collaborating with vfx even if you're going to do something cgi very often will
13:24build a physical thing that people can interact with it just makes it easier for actors to deliver
13:28a performance if there's something in front of them that looks like the character they're meant to
13:33be playing again six weeks later a prototype man trap with three puppeteers inside it is ready for
13:40its first taste test three two one he's coming in and close go on push push keep it going keep it going
13:53so today we have a camera test for the mantra go on more squeeze so we're just testing everything out i
13:59think there's a lot of discussions being had we are looking at how it works how it moves we're
14:05basically thinking about how it eats people i've basically got everyone else to be eating not me
14:12it looked really good that we just get that life in the let's say fingertips i'm here for the movement
14:19and to coordinate the puppeteers i have a crew radio and they've got an open radio inside so they can just
14:25hear me talking but who are the men inside this mollusk how are you all we're good we're good you
14:32just caught us we've just got out of the mansion yeah how how's the how's your lower back is your
14:36lower back there what what your body hurts in there you're all really strong yeah is it yeah but i
14:43recognize any of these guys they featured in the christmas episode of unleashed operating the goblin king
14:51roar shake it but this is actually the first time i've met them as we filmed this episode a month
14:59before the christmas special you with me it's that timey-wimey stuff again which way are you doing i'm
15:05stood up in front yeah and i've got i'm controlling the upper fingers yeah i'm doing the head movement
15:12and i've also got the throat in my teeth and i'm puppeteering the throat with my head wow
15:17kind of doing that i'm in between the two of them yeah i'm using my legs to help close the
15:22page the big flaps that open it so it's your legs that's doing that like that work on my legs and
15:27then i'm using my hands to control the lower tentacles i'm in the back here i'm actually in
15:31the tail so i get to lie down on this job oh so he's got the easy bit there oh no but the very
15:38technical one yeah right so i've got a couple of hand controls in there which i've got these touchy
15:43feeling tentacles at the front yeah it's a cable mechanism that runs all the way through the
15:48man yeah what's the hardest bit of it of it all as you say coordinating all three of us so it feels
15:54like it's just one creature yeah exactly yeah yes yeah so we have a movement coordinator outside
15:59who's giving us the feedback of what's happening and what the director wants in order to find
16:03to the performance yeah and we have monitors so we can see what the camera sees so we can find
16:08to our performance that way as well how often do you have three of you crammed up together like this
16:12quite often we get quite cozy as i say you must know each other pretty well by now right yeah yeah
16:17intimately one might say yeah the puppeteered man trap was used on set throughout and the digital
16:24magic was added in post-production by vfx specialists automatic so ultimately we we had one that would do
16:31the work to be there to stand there but some of the kind of eating of the humans is really really hard
16:37because we would have had to make about three different man traps to eat a human so we ended
16:42up making a kind of a digi double i suppose a digital one as we were doing it we were like well
16:49let's try and bring those tentacles to life let's try and bring this kind of snaky kind of awful things
16:56inside this the belly of the slug the belly of the man trap you know we did quite a lot of kind of overlaying
17:03to just bring other elements of them to life i'm still i watch it and i'm utterly amazed that we
17:10made yeah i think it's amazing and i'm so excited by it and i think it was one of those really complicated
17:15in itself when you watch it probably may not think how complicated it was but it was a very complicated
17:20episode to make
17:33none of the people we see popping up inside lindy's bubble are ai creations every single face and voice
17:40belongs to an actor or supporting artist and they were all filmed in a 48-hour flurry at wolf studios
17:46hi there lindy such a super day we had two very fun days filming the screens half of them were the
17:54cast and half of them were essays who came in and didn't know what they were putting themselves in
17:58for it turns out that woman was her sister one thing russell was really keen on which i think is
18:05very wise um is that in lindy's bubble in the kind of sea of faces we never see like duplicates the idea
18:10that there's like sort of hundreds or thousands of people in this kind of bubble world and so we ended
18:15up filming with about 30 different essays who we put into two different costume looks and hair
18:20looks to kind of make them look a little different and to film them we essentially had them all sit
18:24sort of side by side against these colored backdrops and we had four or five i think different cameras
18:29on them uh rolling simultaneously and we just had them kind of play out the lines and bounce off each
18:34other what's it been like being on a set of doctor who unreal to be honest with you i mean it's
18:40just so excited because doctor who was genuinely my favorite show ever i mean it's just awesome like
18:45to be a part of doctor who's like a dream come true it's just been such a laugh is it like it's
18:50great isn't it it's completely iconic yeah such an incredible career we're having such a good time
18:54for me this is like really full circle because i was the biggest doctor who fan were you like actually
19:00my dad sent me this photo of when oh my god wow look at that this is biggest fan that's amazing that
19:10is brilliant you look so cute okay brilliant work guys and now you've started to realize that some
19:15of your friends are missing and not on the dot and bubble system and you're starting to ask each other
19:18about it on action and action lindy hello we did lots of things with them we gave them props we gave
19:25them emotions to play we danced around behind the cameras to get them to dance and not feel awkward
19:30because it's incredibly awkward dancing to itsy bitsy teeny weenie um in front of a whole crew
19:44and cut there even with filming multiple characters at the same time and having to deal with
20:02alphabetically selective slugs not everything was as simple as a b c what's been the biggest challenge
20:10development of bringing this episode in particular to to like yeah the bubble okay good is it a bubble
20:15yeah it's got to be the bubble dot and bubble the concept of this episode is that cali's character
20:22lindy lives in this kind of weird bubble yeah at all times that's completely done in cgi so we have to
20:28imagine the bubble over her head with every single shot and try and shoot frames that will kind of work
20:35for that the effects element that we're going to bring in later yeah so we're kind of guessing all the
20:39time and you know who knows that's always a good place to be isn't it i think this works
20:47it's the longest stage directions i've ever had to write just describing how that bubble works and
20:52what the screens do forward forward forward i actually sent that script him some drawings and
20:59saying this is what i mean just in case it's not clear on the page and showing the screen is just
21:04turning around someone's head why have you got a bowl so we call this the bubble and we put this
21:13around the actor yeah and when you need a bubble reference to see the positioning of the actual
21:18bubble within the edit so all these like little squares these are basically different screens yeah
21:25um so when for example when we need a bubble reference we position it accurately just on the head yeah
21:32just on the head and then you know kind of like that depending on where we need the actual bubble
21:37reference so is this really important for you to get right because that must be a nightmare to try
21:42and make that work in vfx 100 it's uh it's it's i mean as accurate as you can get it yeah it'd be great
21:49thank you and it's not just the camera ops and vfx that have to consider the bubble spare a thought
21:56for callie who spends most of the episode inside it the hardest thing was the eye lines because
22:02constantly my eyes will be flickering like from left to right up and down in between talking to
22:09everyone when i'm actually just talking to someone reading the lines on the side hi there lindy it's
22:14such a super day you look so good baby oh cooper you're so kind today we have been filming mindy's
22:23morning routine in her apartment so we've been waking up and then the bubble has been leading us
22:30into the bathroom and they wanted the effect of having the camera drag but without any movement
22:37i was harnessed into the dolly and then i just had to with my legs i mean if you've got any footage of it
22:41i look ridiculous but it was very fun i got harnessed it i felt like i was like christine aguilera
22:46in the music but what about the brains of the operation i'm expecting something groundbreaking
22:52to bring the dot to life this is the dot i was expecting something like sophisticated sci-fi hey hey
22:59who says it's not a bit it's a cellotape and a smiley yellow face it's cute it is cute i'll give you
23:07that three two one attack so there's a really exciting scene where lindy and ricky are attacked
23:13by lindy's dot which is this small device which kind of projects her bubble and attack as with lots
23:21of the vfx in the episode we couldn't obviously do anything physically in camera it was all kind of
23:26make-believe and imaginary we've been rehearsing with a stick the stunts they just run around with
23:31a stick and then we take out the stick and then we literally have to stare into space for the dot
23:38it's quite hard isn't it it looks a bit weird it's a bit mad if you kind of don't know what's going on
23:42just like running after or running away from nothing and and whacking nothing yeah
23:47doctor who has always prided itself on keeping its creatures and monsters as real as possible
24:00characters like the meep the wroth warriors the goblin king the goblins the bogeyman and the man
24:05traps are physical entities you can touch and feel what the hell they're enhanced by vfx not built
24:14entirely on computers on the set of doctor who there's a vfx team that helps smooth the transition
24:22from what gets shot on camera to what ends up on the screen so for this week's work experience
24:27i'm gonna find out exactly what it takes to be a vfx assistant
24:37you might have spotted sarah throughout this series with what looks like a giant lollipop
24:41and a paint samples chart sarah is part of a wider vfx team who are integral to bringing doctor who's
24:49weird worlds and crazy creatures to life can i ask you yeah why you go around holding silver balls
24:57well let me go okay so basically obviously you're next to the silver side and there's a mac gray side
25:01yeah right there's the silver side there's the mac gray side
25:05i'm a fast learner aren't i yeah you are you're great an essential part of a vfx assistant's
25:12toolkit these shiny balls allow them to create a map of the light sources
25:20then during post-production the vfx artists can use that information to convincingly light cgi effects
25:27to look like they're a natural part of the scene so you will see from the silver side you'll see
25:31where all the licenses are coming from right and then obviously on the gray side that shows you the
25:36intensity of that so when it comes to the post-production of it it's um you can align to match
25:42the the elements as of this why do you have okay are you thinking of painting your room or yeah yeah
25:48just pick and choose your color no this is just a general color chart so when it does come to the
25:52head you can align it to the features as well the people would be watching this thinking i'd love
25:58to get into visual effects work right how did you end up on the set of doctor who so i actually started
26:04off as a cast pa for bernard cribben who plays real yeah um and then they asked me to be a runner for
26:13the vfx team for a day from that i became a vfx assistant yeah so your story kind of is an example of
26:20someone to just get your foot in the door yeah start working on set getting to know people figuring
26:25out what you like and then here you are i think that's the thing i think you just have to get
26:29onto set somehow some way then you get you have the chance to talk to different people and talk to
26:34the right people as well and you never know there's always an opportunity right as with all the jobs on
26:41set sarah needs to be alert to the instant her skills are required me sorry sorry i just get in
26:50the way thank you thank you very much thank you very much next job you're like you're like an action
26:58hero then it's sprung out so when you get the call to go and stand in front of the camera what are you
27:03doing with it what are you doing with the ball well so you'd hold up the chart and then with the ball you'd
27:07spin it like you have to have some sort of like rotational movement so you can see both sides yeah
27:14but i like to like oh you're giving a spin yeah oh techers you know what i mean what happens if you
27:21drop it though it'd be embarrassing um very embarrassing okay time for me to be mini sarah
27:35and one from another angle not awkward at all thank you very much thank you hello it's quite slippery
27:56isn't it oh my heart's actually going really fast because it's quite a lot of cash like you know
28:03like those cameras are big and there's a big monster there anyway coming for your job sarah no
28:10please no please no please no next time on doctor who
28:22is
28:35so
