00:00In this episode, a mysterious stranger takes the Doctor under his wing.
00:06That is so cool.
00:09Some cosplaying aliens are having a hoot.
00:12Me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me.
00:15I've been learning about the phrase, the early bird catches the worm.
00:20Welcome to Doctor Who Unleashed.
00:22Coming up, how does one go from this, to this, to this?
00:28It looks how I feel.
00:30Guest star Jonathan Groff reveals what it's like to dance with a Doctor.
00:34Took me to a completely different place with him.
00:37Like, we were in the stars together dancing.
00:41And spoiler alert, we've got an Unleashed exclusive clip from the next Doctor Who episode.
00:46Honoured guests, you are cordially invited to Doctor Who Unleashed, the show that gets you behind-the-scenes access to the Who-niverse.
01:04In this episode, we lift the lid on Rogue, the seventh adventure of Shuti Gatwa's Doctor and his companion, Ruby Sunday.
01:14OK, great.
01:15But be prepared for spoilers.
01:17So, without further ado...
01:23Action.
01:25Set against a Regency-era backdrop, this episode might have a familiar feel if you like another television series set in a similar historical period, which we are most definitely not allowed to mention.
01:37Bridgerton.
01:38Bridgerton.
01:39Bridgerton.
01:40Oh my, Bridgerton!
01:41How is this my actual dream?
01:42It's brilliant, isn't it?
01:43This is Doctor Who meets Bridgerton.
01:45If I have any guess, this could be the episode everyone talks about.
01:48So, how would the Doctor describe it?
01:53Sexy.
01:55I don't know if I'm allowed to say that, but it was full of passions and passion.
01:59You know, whenever you do Regency stuff, it makes you walk and move and talk differently, so it's always nice playing with that.
02:07We love our costume and makeup departments, and they probably hate the fact that we love them, because the fact that we love them means we work them to death.
02:12So, the steam come out of their ears, because we're going, let's do the Regency, let's have a ball, let's have the ladies and the staff, and the full pomp and ceremony of that period.
02:25The dances, the movement, the choreography, the style of it, we just wanted this to look lavish.
02:30Throw in some bloodthirsty, body-snatching, cosplaying alien birds, and you've already got the makings of a Doctor Who classic.
02:38But really, the heart of this episode is a slow-burning pash between the Doctor and a mysterious intergalactic bounty hunter, Rogue.
02:49My name is Jonathan Groff, and I am playing Rogue.
02:53The multi-award-winning star of shows such as Glee, Hamilton and Frozen, Jonathan Groff comes with the glitter of Hollywood superstardom.
03:01You have those moments where they say, shall we send the script to Jonathan Groff? And I'm like, yeah, go on, waste my time. And he read it and loved it. It's a superstar from that.
03:10So Rogue is basically an alien bounty hunter. So I've been thinking a lot about Han Solo from Star Wars.
03:17We find ourselves meeting in this world and teaming up to destroy a common ally.
03:26And in the process of that, open up to each other, get a bit vulnerable, and have a connection at the same time that we're having an adventure.
03:39Nice to meet you. I'm the Doctor. Just the Doctor? Just Rogue?
03:46This is a chance for the Doctor to sizzle. We don't often do this, but it's like he meets someone who is just on the set.
03:53I mean, first of all, they're enemies, then they're friends, that classic, they go for classic rom-com structures.
03:58The meet-cute, and the arguing, and the falling out, then the coming together, and then the sacrifice.
04:03Fast paper.
04:06Okay.
04:08There's this lonely souls meeting that happens in the script that I was really moved by.
04:14Let's argue across the stars.
04:16It's just new science to the Doctor. So he gets to flirt, he gets to break his heart.
04:21I like that.
04:22Russell enlisted writer Kate Herron, director and executive producer of Loki, and her writing partner, Bryony Redman, to pen these new sides of the Doctor.
04:33Out of the gate, I was like, well, look, I love romance, like, can we do, like, a queer romance? And he was like, absolutely.
04:39So, yes, I think that was always, like, I guess, the centre of it for us and, like, the heart of the story.
04:45Shooty's interpretation is so extroverted, so we were like, well, let's make them a bit more of an introvert, because that will just be fun and, you know, opposites attract.
04:54He's an incredible actor. I zoomed with him, and I guess that was, like, our kind of chemistry read.
05:02Now, this is a surprise.
05:09And it was full of chemistry.
05:19It's like you've got the right man for the job.
05:21One particular scene that had to sizzle was the intimate dance between Rogue and the Doctor.
05:35We've got in the choreographer, Jack Murphy, who choreographs Bridgerton.
05:39A formidable, lovable rogue of a man.
05:44As he worked with us, like, through the steps, it didn't feel like we were learning a dance dance clinically.
05:50Like, he'd always root it in some form of, like, artistic intent.
05:56The choreography was very much about the connection forming and vibing between the two characters.
06:04The day that we performed the dance is so far my favorite day on set.
06:10There's a moment in the dance where the lights go out and it's a spotlight on the two of us dancing.
06:16And I, there was no one else in the room but Judy.
06:20It was really transformational and took me to a completely different place with him.
06:27Like, we were in the stars together dancing.
06:30Performing it on a day felt very nerve-wracking but electric.
06:36Who's going to blink? Who's going to be surprised?
06:38In the story, it makes perfect sense because they are trying to fight an enemy who live on drama, who cosplay,
06:47who live on sensation and appearance and reactions and scandal.
06:51Oh, my ladies.
06:53So they set out to create a scandal. I don't think it's remotely scandalous.
06:55I think it's simply beautiful to watch.
06:58The episode ends with that kiss.
07:03And Rogue sacrificing himself for Ruby.
07:07But is this the end for the Doctor's newfound love interest?
07:11I hope we're seeing Rogue again.
07:15Rogue tells the Doctor at the end of the episode to find him.
07:19So it's totally up to the Doctor.
07:21The ball is in his court, so to speak.
07:31The storyline for this episode takes place across one evening.
07:35But it took three weeks of night shoots to get everything in the can.
07:39Looks really pretty, doesn't it?
07:42Facing lots of late starts and early finishes, the Who crew needed to prepare themselves for the challenges ahead.
07:49For me, that means starting the night off the best way I know.
07:53A good cup of builder's tea.
07:54When they said that we were going to come and do nights, I was quite cocky.
08:00I was like, oh, that's easy, that's fine, I'm used to that.
08:03It's actually quite hard work.
08:06I'm flagging and I'm not so cocky now.
08:08What's weird is they've just brought these giant cranes in and they're massive.
08:15They're so bright that you forget that it's three o'clock in the morning.
08:21It's like the middle of the afternoon.
08:24So how's everyone coping?
08:26We've not been terrible.
08:27When we knew that we were going to have three weeks night shoots, it was like, oh my word, this is going to be difficult.
08:33But it's been...
08:34Just get on with it. I feel like everyone has smashed it.
08:39So you don't change it up, you just...
08:42Carry on as normal?
08:44Just carry on as normal. I'm a bit of a night owl anyway, so it suits me fine.
08:48Yeah.
08:50I feel night shoots, like you say, is always just quite atmospheric.
08:56I feel it working at night.
08:58If that's got Instagram written all over it.
09:00Yes, yes.
09:01It turns out though, shooty, the wisteria, the flowers, they're not real.
09:04Fake flowers.
09:06Really?
09:07I was a bit disappointed.
09:08I was disappointed.
09:09I was disappointed.
09:10It's all right though, don't worry. You'll be fine.
09:12Thanks man.
09:13It's okay. Thank you.
09:15Putting the wisteria to one side, how's everyone else preparing?
09:18So, night shoot.
09:20Your first one?
09:22It is my first night shoot actually.
09:23And how are you doing so far?
09:25So far I'm all right.
09:26Yeah?
09:27The wisteria is layers.
09:28It's all about your body temp.
09:29That's what's keeping you going.
09:30Yeah, I probably should have bought my hat today.
09:33Because my ears are pretty cold right now.
09:35Yeah.
09:36But it's not too bad.
09:38Lads, how are you coping?
09:40Going well, going well so far.
09:42Active, awake, second coffee.
09:44You two coffees in already?
09:45Two coffees, I'm going to keep going with it.
09:46Yeah, yeah.
09:47And then if I need a boost, maybe 3am.
09:50Yeah.
09:51For a little time.
09:52I'm fresh.
09:53I don't have no coffee.
09:54Only water.
09:55Just water?
09:56Just water.
09:57I can't do that.
09:58I've had four cups of tea already.
09:59Four?
10:00Yeah.
10:01Wow.
10:02Damn.
10:03What's your tactic?
10:04Ginger shots are great.
10:06And caffeine, like coffee.
10:08Towards the end of the night, Haribo sweets.
10:11Oh, nice.
10:12You know when the Haribo comes out later?
10:14Yes.
10:15Do you want one?
10:16Can I?
10:17Yes, of course.
10:18I'll bring them down.
10:19How are you doing it?
10:20Water.
10:21One cup of coffee and loads of oranges.
10:25Vitamin C gives energy.
10:27I was actually advised this.
10:28By who?
10:29By Tom Hardy.
10:30No way!
10:31Yeah, on a night shoot.
10:32No way!
10:33He said vitamin C tablets and oranges.
10:35Yeah.
10:36And it's a work to treat.
10:37Yeah.
10:38Two years later, still doing me justice.
10:40Well, if Tom Hardy says it, then...
10:42Who can disagree?
10:44Sadly, though, not everyone's prepared themselves adequately for a Doctor Who night shoot.
10:54Just kidding.
10:55These creepy corpses are the work of the incredible prosthetics and costume departments.
11:01It looks how I feel.
11:02Yeah, he's dead.
11:03He's finished.
11:04And Dean has not seen this yet.
11:07This is a deceased you.
11:09Oh, my goodness.
11:10Oh!
11:11That is so weird.
11:14Did you ever think to yourself, you know, when you started your acting career, and you've
11:20been in some pretty big shows.
11:22I've died a lot once again.
11:23You're used to it by now.
11:24I've seen myself there before.
11:25Yeah.
11:26I suppose not in this.
11:27But not like this.
11:28No.
11:29Not like that.
11:30Yeah.
11:31That is gross.
11:32With a night shoot drawing to a close, I want to check in with the Who crew and see
11:41if their tips and tricks to work through the shift have paid off.
11:45How are you doing?
11:46I'm doing well.
11:47How are you doing?
11:48How are you doing?
11:49I'm flagging now.
11:50I've won now.
11:51I've lost count.
11:52Six?
11:53Oh, no.
11:54I'm flagging.
11:55This is dangerous.
11:56Yeah.
11:57You don't look the most sprightly, mate.
12:00I'm very tired.
12:01Yeah.
12:02You know earlier you were saying the whole Tom Hardy, just oranges and water thing.
12:07Do you think that maybe Tom didn't necessarily get it right with his tactics?
12:12I think he lied.
12:14If you're watching Tom, Schwabe doesn't like the whole vitamin C plan.
12:18It hasn't worked.
12:19It has not worked.
12:20Yeah.
12:21I cannot see Michelle.
12:25Therefore, I can't see the Haribo that's supposed to help me through the final hour of tonight's
12:32show.
12:33I'm starting to think she made the whole thing up.
12:46Still to come on Doctor Who Unleashed.
12:48Now find them!
12:50Mission Impossible actor Indira Farmer reveals what it really takes to turn into a childer.
12:56Three and a half to four hours and then about 45 minutes to take it all off.
13:03I get measured up for my work experience.
13:05Messed up like someone who was living 200 years ago.
13:10And spoiler alert, we've got a world exclusive peak at the next episode of Doctor Who.
13:17But first.
13:20Of course, a Regency drama is all about the look.
13:23And to pull it off in all its pomp, you need a lavish stately pile filled with candelabras and candles,
13:30peacocks and pineapples and party animals fopping around in breeches and tailcoats,
13:35corsets and bodices.
13:38I honestly felt the prettiest I've ever felt.
13:41I remember Pam, our costume designer, said that yellow always works with blondes.
13:46And it did.
13:47I decided to put Millie in yellow because she looks good in yellow.
13:51And not everybody can get away with it.
13:53And it looks good on camera and in that set, because it was quite dark, it popped.
13:59So it's quite nice.
14:00Whenever you do Regency stuff and like period stuff, it makes you walk and move and talk differently.
14:06I just loved all those ruffles and my hair and everything about that outfit.
14:12So the waistcoat and the breeches of cream and the coat,
14:16I wanted to have something sort of deep in colour, but quite rich in colour.
14:21So I chose that sort of very deep, almost wine colour in velvet.
14:25So it was quite luxurious.
14:26But at the same time, I was kind of aware that Jon Pertwee also wore a,
14:31I think the same colour velvet jacket.
14:33So there was a nod to an old doctor.
14:36It just felt wealthy.
14:40I was like, I want to look like I'm rich and I own land.
14:45And that's what I looked like.
14:47And so it was good.
14:48But it wasn't just the main cast that Pam and her team had to kit out.
14:53There were also 73 supporting artists in this episode.
14:57That's 73 Regency costumes, 73 pairs of Regency shoes and 73 Regency hairdos.
15:05And the person in charge of corralling this army of aristocratic extras is Mikey.
15:11So in 35 minutes, friends, we're going to get the dancers lined up.
15:15So if we can just prepare for that, that would be amazing.
15:18So today we're filming a, the beginning of episode six, which is very exciting.
15:22We've got lots of dancers. We've got lots of crowd.
15:24We've got some musicians.
15:25We've basically got a very big opening.
15:27So yeah, we've also got my ear going off at the moment.
15:29One sec.
15:30Okay, sorry, that will happen a lot.
15:33It's 9am.
15:34And in just three hours time, we're recording the spectacular opening ball scene.
15:39That might seem like plenty of time, but with all those supporting artists and dancers to get ready,
15:45Mikey and his team are up against it.
15:49Helping Mikey and the other ADs are a team of runners charged with getting each of the performers ready for filming.
15:56We've got Callum here, who's running the costume department.
15:59We've got Simona a little bit further, who's doing makeup.
16:02I am in charge of the dancers today.
16:05The reality of it is having enough time to get everyone through.
16:09So there's 60 odd people today.
16:11That'll take us two hours, which is pretty good, I'm going to say.
16:14It's for a period as well.
16:15It's pretty good.
16:16There's a lot of people on the top of their game.
16:17And then we've also got to build in breakfast for everyone in that as well.
16:20Very important.
16:21So we do build that time in.
16:23Hold on.
16:24Did someone mention breakfast?
16:25Basically what happens is you have to feed all the SA's in half an hour.
16:29So there's always a bit of a hustle to get everyone through as quick as possible basically.
16:32Everyone has to wear bibs so they can protect these lovely, lovely costumes.
16:36Everyone's having a good time, aren't they guys?
16:40As you can see, we are very good at our jobs.
16:42Whilst everyone's tucking in, I'd like to know where all these supporting artists come from.
16:47What will happen is we will get a script and it will say, you know, we'll be in this time, we'll need this about people.
16:53We'll then go to the director and the director will say, I want, I don't know, 40 people in this roughly.
16:57Yeah.
16:58And we'll talk to costume and makeup departments about, you know, costume sizes.
17:00That's a really important thing because a lot of these costumes are made here.
17:04They're hired and then they have to fit into those costumes.
17:07Yeah.
17:08So that casting process goes out to a bunch of agencies that we use.
17:11Yeah.
17:12But there's also some street casting involved as well, where we went out to lots of different dance schools and did lots of casting like that.
17:18You've got jobbing supporting artists that some people use as a job.
17:21Yeah.
17:22There are people that I've been casting people in the past on other productions where I would literally spot them on the street and be like, oh my goodness, you're perfect.
17:29And I'd just drop what I'm doing and I would just run over to them with a clipboard and a photograph and take a photo of them.
17:3490% of the time everyone's really kind of intrigued and up for it.
17:37Yeah.
17:3810% of the time they think I'm some weirdo coming up to them on the street.
17:40From finding their photo from an agent or whatever, or just meeting them in real life, to them being stood on the set looking amazing in these costumes.
17:47Yeah.
17:48It's really satisfying.
17:49The haze coming.
17:50With everyone fed and watered, it's time for one last check before the action begins.
17:54OK, dancers, we're going to go to set.
17:57Grab your stuff.
17:58We'll be on our way.
18:00But in an episode about cosplay, what does it actually feel like dressing up for a costume drama?
18:07Carl and Katie, here you are in your regala. How comfortable is the get-up, Katie?
18:11Not so comfortable.
18:12I'm wearing two shorts.
18:13But you look fabulous, so it's OK.
18:14There's one built in the dress, and then you need the extra for this region for the extra vavoons.
18:20For the regency look, shall we say. How about you, Carl? How are you finding it? You look fantastic.
18:25I think most of the costume is very comfortable.
18:27Apart from the shoes can be a bit draining after a whole day of running around, walking around in the same shoes.
18:33Guys, we're about to send them up to set.
18:35Thank you very much. Bye-bye. Bye-bye.
18:37Thank you very much. Thanks for the wrangling.
18:39There we are. There's wrangling in action for you right there.
18:43Nice one. We're stepping on with dancers.
18:45Thanks again. Into our positions, friends. Thank you very much.
18:48It's more than just making sure they're in the right place at the right time, but you're feeding those notes from the director.
18:53Yes. So we're the assistant directors, so our job is to dress it, which is where we place all the extras and supporting artists where they need to be.
19:00And then we go for rehearsal, and the director will say something like, oh, can you tweak them?
19:03Can you build up their performance, or can you dial it back?
19:05Yeah.
19:06We're running around, essentially choreographing the extras.
19:09So we try and get the best performances out of them as well, and sometimes that's explaining to them in a big room of people.
19:14We go, right, this is what's going to happen today, you need to do this and that.
19:16But then when we get them on set, there's a lot more precision involved, because we're kind of looking at what the camera's seeing.
19:21Standing by for rehearsing.
19:23So we then will go down to them and be like, can you be a bit more sad? Can you find some tears or something? That's quite a challenge.
19:29And play back.
19:31By the stroke of midday, Mikey and his team have managed to get everyone in costume and in position for the cameras to start rolling.
19:40I'm quite happy with what we've done on this episode. I think everyone looks really good.
19:43You're the artist, wonderful work.
19:53Down the years, the Hooniverse has brought us all manner of bothersome beasts.
19:58And in this episode, the Doctor came face to beak with a particularly foul race of cosplaying feathered foes, the Chalder.
20:07What? By the Lord?
20:08I've got quite a history on Doctor Who of using animals. I've done rhinos, and we've had cats, we've had pigs.
20:15And here come the birds. Here come the beautiful birds with their most flamboyant.
20:19Atos, yos, yos, yos!
20:21Right at the very beginning, I said, do you know what we haven't done?
20:27We haven't done human beings in alien prosthetics walking around saying, I will kill you, Doctor.
20:35And so that's what I said, please can we do that? And I just thought birds were a lovely chance.
20:40The colours, the ceremony, the show, the flamboyance, just the beauty of birds.
20:45You think of birds with their feathers as quite showy, and they're quite dress-up aliens,
20:49so it kind of makes sense that they go from feathers to full-on outfit.
20:54That is such a Doctor Who sentence, isn't it?
20:56Birds, they just love fancy dress.
20:58They do! It makes perfect sense, birds love fancy dress, of course they do.
21:02And also, this is a very rare opportunity, this is my first chance at Doctor Who,
21:06where every member of an alien species looks different.
21:09All the Chalder birds look different to each other, and I love that.
21:12It's a family of birds.
21:16Mark up.
21:19This flock of shape-shifting baddies are led by the sinister Duchess of Pemberton,
21:24played by Mission Impossible and Game of Thrones actor, Indira Varma.
21:30Me, I get to be Regency Duchess of Pemberton, and then I change into weird Chalder Duchess of Pemberton,
21:38who then, they reveal their true selves, and they become these alien birds.
21:43No, find them!
21:45Then when they become birds, it's just chaos, and that was really fun.
21:51But before the fun begins, how much time is spent in the prosthetics chair?
21:55Oh, not long, just maybe three and a half to four hours, and then about 45 minutes to take it all off.
22:04And don't I look fabulous!
22:07So, how are these cluckers bought to life?
22:13Each bird has two technicians with them.
22:15So, we've got a make-up artist and an assistant for each of them, which means we have 12 people as well as myself today.
22:22It's gone from, you know, digital sculpting to practical sculpting, taken inspiration from birds of prey.
22:29So many things were thought of, including, you know, the colour of a bird's hands, you know, the claws, for it to have little gloves on.
22:36And should they be the same colour? Should they kind of be similar to the birds that we're trying to replicate?
22:40Yeah, yeah. And a mammoth and a mother of feathers, no doubt.
22:42Oh my God, we're covered in feathers. The workshop's like a giant nest right now. It's absolutely bonkers.
22:47I don't like it when people ask me about what it feels like to be in it, because it makes me think about it.
22:57No, it's actually okay, because it's glued onto my skin. There's no space in between my skin and it to start getting itchy.
23:07Well, it is quite disconcerting speaking to you when you look like this.
23:12How does it feel? And you've got the hands on as well, the hands are straight, isn't it?
23:17Yeah. The hand, yeah, it's, look, it feels, it's not the most comfortable feeling.
23:24A ruby sundae.
23:28I want to be you.
23:33It's been great. It's been very funny.
23:35You forget that you have it on sometimes. I'll be walking around and like, people give you weird looks.
23:40It actually keeps you warm, like, when it's on. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
23:44And you're enjoying the character. You're enjoying being a bandit.
23:47I am, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
23:48That's always so much fun to, as an actor, to play a villain and explore that side of humanity.
23:54The oddity in mind.
23:56Well, listen, Paul, thank you very much for chatting to us.
23:58Thank you. Thank you, please.
23:59So you're going to... Oh, that's weird.
24:02Oh, God. I'm not going to sleep tonight.
24:04Yeah.
24:08Now, this was a busy episode, right?
24:10You saw how many supporting artists were in it.
24:14But they don't just turn up with all their Regency costume ready to go.
24:19I mean, who's got that laying around?
24:21It was all down to these guys.
24:23Just got to find out what happened.
24:24Hello. Nice to see you.
24:25Thanks for having me.
24:26Welcome to the costume department.
24:27I knew you were working costumes straight away when I met you first.
24:29Is this a bit of a giveaway?
24:30That's the measuring table on the neck.
24:31Dead giveaway.
24:32Straight away.
24:33So I'm going to go under your shirt now and just measure what's called your natural waist.
24:35So that's straight around.
24:36I've actually got a suit fitting for a mate's wedding coming up.
24:37What was my chest that I've interested so I can make a nod?
24:38It's 41.
24:3941.
24:40OK, good.
24:41That's good.
24:42Next up, arm length.
24:43I think I've got quite short arms.
24:44No, you sit absolutely an average length of arms.
24:45Average.
24:46Hello.
24:47And then outside legs.
24:48So I'm going to go from...
24:50Let's go from where the breeches will probably sit, watch it there, and I'm going to go down
25:08where the breeches will probably sit much there and i'm going to go down to the knee which is
25:13there just to check that we can get the right length yeah i'm really interested in the idea
25:16this is more than just sticking claws on people it's about creating characters exactly and you
25:23can see i've got three quite different looks here that i've pulled out yeah so this might be a good
25:27first option that's quite right it's kind of flamboyant aristocrat i think you can pull that
25:32off i don't think there's any flamboyant aristocrats from glennamon but there we are
25:35i could be the first you might feel very differently yeah we'll see what else do i need
25:41to complete the aristocratic look i love the thought that these were all arranged back then
25:47yeah it was all about showing the shapely leg was it is that why yeah i want to show off your
25:53calves i want to show off your calves and then this this style of shirt was really common at the time
25:58so it looks very baggy and voluminous compared to what we're used to yeah you're building them sort
26:04of from the layers up right you build foundation yeah inside out so everybody's wearing this stuff
26:09and then it's like okay what are you gonna go for time to suit up you start with these stockings
26:17which are essentially very long socks socks shirt trousers okay on it i'll leave you to do that yes
26:31dressed up like someone who was living 200 years ago i thought i'd lost a bit of weight recently
26:37how are we doing i'm enjoying the shirt so far so good how is it feeling so far the rugby socks are
26:44good i'm digging them i feel i don't know i'm ready to i don't know do something this is a jazzy
26:52adding a waistcoat a cravat around my neck some shoes how's that feel in the fit yeah it's a bit
27:01tight on the old toes but you know what fine and some last minute adjustments i feel pretty good
27:07about it how's it feel to you i feel great i feel i feel a million dollars should i get a mirror
27:15oh wow my calves aren't especially shapely but i do like this
27:22yeah i don't feel like i'm standing taller give you a wig and a bit of makeup okay
27:29i feel like a new mud really sucks you in right off on the pub is it
