00:01She said I'd like to address this meeting of the Hartford Valley PTA.
00:06Welcome to Miss Mojo.
00:08And today we're counting down our picks for the top 10 country music one-hit wonders.
00:13And it's alright, yeah, I'll be fine, don't worry about this hard of mine.
00:19For this list, we'll be looking at the most notable tracks from the genre that became
00:23artists' main claim to fame.
00:25Do you remember any of these country favorites?
00:27Let us know in the comments.
00:3010. Butterfly Kisses – Bob Carlyle
00:34A song penned by Randy Thomas and Bob Carlyle for the latter's then-teen girl,
00:40Butterfly Kisses evokes all the feelings that encompass the special bond between a parent and child.
00:46She talks to Jesus and I close my eyes.
00:51It was released over two decades ago but still carries the same weight it did back in 1997.
00:57We don't see that changing any time soon either.
01:00The poignant masterpiece, which earned Carlyle a Grammy win for best country song and a name
01:10in the music industry, has gone on to be covered by numerous notable artists.
01:15Ultimately, none of Carlyle's later works would garner the same acclaim as his bittersweet
01:201997 hit.
01:21Butterfly Kisses – Bob Carlyle
01:25Billy Gilman
01:30At just 12 years old, Billy Gilman became the youngest male artist to ever chart the country
01:36top 40 with a solo hit.
01:38He impressively did so with his debut single, One Voice, a powerful exploration of how violence
01:45is perceived by youth.
01:52With such an achievement under his belt so early in life, Gilman followed up the 2000 song with
01:58a few more projects, yet ultimately retreated from the spotlight.
02:02But in 2016, the artist graced the Voice stage and wound up being the competition's runner-up,
02:08proving that he has the makings of more than a one-hit wonder.
02:11He's still relatively young, so perhaps the singer will release another hit.
02:15Number 8 Rose Garden – Lynn Anderson
02:24Pop country artist Lynn Anderson was eager to record her cover of Rose Garden, a song penned
02:30and produced by Joe South.
02:32Her desire was initially met with objection, as her husband-slash-producer argued that the
02:37single wasn't a girl's song.
02:39But Lynn persisted and recorded her version, which includes a beautifully added string section
02:53and feminine vocals to make the track different, but equally special.
02:57I could sing you a tune and promise you the moon
03:01Released in 1970, the song quickly garnered positive reception.
03:05It spent five weeks atop the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and even reached number
03:09three on the Hot 100.
03:11I never promised you a rose garden
03:14Number 7 Should've Asked Her Faster – Ty England
03:19Ty England went out by himself after having been part of Garth Brooks' band and instantly
03:24became popular with his first single, Should've Asked Her Faster, in 1995.
03:29You little dance hog just outside of Dallas
03:33The upbeat tune was perfect for fans of the genre, as evidenced by the fact that it reached
03:38the third spot on the Hot Country Songs chart.
03:41Riding off the attention, England understandably continued to make more music, though his newer
03:46work didn't really leave as big of a mark.
03:49There she goes, I dismiss, don't take no rocket scientist
03:54The artist enjoyed some level of success afterwards, but there's no denying that this single was
03:59his signature work.
04:06Number 6 Strawberry Wine – Dina Carter
04:10An emotionally charged ballad sure to get you in your feels, Strawberry Wine is Dina Carter's
04:16debut single that wound up being her most famous release.
04:19He was working through college.
04:23The nostalgic country love song was all the rage in the mid-90s, as it rose to the top
04:28spot on what's known today as the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, and earned a Grammy
04:33nomination.
04:34The Nashville Songwriters Association International even named it Song of the Year.
04:40Needless to say, Strawberry Wine is the track the artist remains most recognized for, even
04:50though she has released other well-received records since recording her premiere hit.
04:55Number 5 Dust on the Bottle – David Lee Murphy Known for the fourth single from his first album,
05:04David Lee Murphy couldn't have imagined just how big this song would become.
05:13The artist explained that he was in his kitchen with his guitar in hand when he created Dust
05:17on the Bottle.
05:18In roughly 15 minutes, he explained that it amazingly came out of nowhere.
05:23This spontaneity proved valuable for the track's content, with lyrics detailing advice for
05:27wooing your partner.
05:33It's been decades since the number one hit first entered people's lives, but there's
05:37no denying that it continues to get sweeter with time.
05:45Number 4 Leave the Pieces – The Wreckers
05:49Talented artists and friends Michelle Branch and Jessica Harp were the musical pair we didn't
05:54know we needed back in the mid-2000s.
06:03The two teamed up to form the country duo known as The Wreckers and put out a killer first
06:08studio album.
06:09The lead track from said album, Leave the Pieces, touches on knowing your worth and a relationship,
06:15a message that many connected with.
06:23The song notably peaked at number one in the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, something
06:27no female duo had achieved since 1953.
06:31Lightning didn't strike twice, however, and the pair disbanded not long after the album's
06:36release.
06:41Number 3 I Loved Her First – Heartland
06:45As we've learned from Bob Carlyle's Butterfly Kisses, country songs that detail the specialness
06:50of the father-daughter relationship do especially well with audiences.
06:59Heartland's I Loved Her First does this with lyrics and melodies that bittersweetly pull
07:05on the heartstrings.
07:07To this day, the song remains a popular choice for dads and their girls to enjoy together,
07:11especially at weddings.
07:13And I prayed that she'd find you someday.
07:18The ballad serves as Heartland's sole country chart topper, and it set the bar extremely high
07:23for the musical group of six.
07:25Their subsequent singles weren't able to perform at the same level, and member departures followed.
07:29Number 2 Feed Jake – Pirates of the Mississippi
07:39If there's one thing that seems to do just as well as love among country fans, it's
07:45songs about man's best friend.
07:55Pirates of the Mississippi's Feed Jake, a story about the bond shared between owner and
07:59dog is the quintessential example.
08:02Right up there with country classics sure to induce waterworks, this third single from
08:07the musical group's self-titled album is a ballad that will never go out of style.
08:16Accompanied by guitar, synthesized strings, and versatile lyrics, it holds socio-political
08:22messaging that makes it much more than a story about animals.
08:26Unfortunately, Pirates of the Mississippi disbanded more than once, and Feed Jake would remain
08:31their best performing release.

08:56Harper Valley PTA
09:00Jeannie C. Reilly
09:02Like many others, Jeannie C. Reilly's debut single is also her most beloved.
09:10With 1968's Harper Valley PTA, Reilly delivered an instant international hit that widely touched
09:18listeners, solidifying her status among the more popular country artists.
09:23The track not only topped the charts, but it also won a Grammy and led to a film and TV
09:28series.
09:29Well, it happened that PTA was gonna meet that very afternoon.
09:34A song about a widowed mother standing up for her daughter, the storytelling is equally
09:39badass and ahead of its time.
09:41The day my mama stalked it to the Harper Valley PTA.
09:46Considering Harper Valley PTA's massive popularity, it's no surprise that Reilly couldn't replicate
09:53its magic with her sequel.
