Seth and Sean assess which of the projected division winners who WON'T get a 1st round bye they'd rather the Texans travel to face in the Wild Card round.
Transcript
00:00Right now, the Texans would be the seventh seed in the AFC.
00:05I can't remember if you and I did this exercise yesterday or not, Seth.
00:09If you had your druthers, which of the three division winners that would not be getting a buy?
00:15Right now, Denver would get a buy in the first round.
00:17I don't know if that will hold up or not.
00:18I haven't looked at everybody's schedule to see who Denver plays.
00:21But let's pretend for now that the two, three, and four seeds are New England, Jacksonville, and Pittsburgh.
00:26And the Texans could be the 5, 6, or 7 after this weekend.
00:31They could lead the division after this weekend if the Colts beat the Jags.
00:34But if the Texans beat the Chargers, at a minimum, they'll be the sixth seed.
00:39If they beat the Chargers and the Eagles beat the Bills, then the Texans will be the 5th seed head-to-head for both of those teams, the Bills and the Chargers.
00:49New England, Jacksonville, Pittsburgh, you've got to go face one of them on the road.
00:53Who do you least, who do you most want to face?
00:56I think I would, if I had to power rank them in terms of where I would want to go, it's a tough one.
01:03Because it's going to be either Pittsburgh or New England.
01:07I think the unknown element of New England and just not really being sure whether they're either a really, really good team,
01:15that, hey, they can even beat Baltimore's backup quarterback.
01:19But I'm not so sure about New England.
01:25I think I'd rather face the Steelers.
01:29If I had to choose between going to Pittsburgh or going to New England, I'd rather go to Pittsburgh.
01:34Neither of those places are particularly difficult places to play in terms of crowd noise or anything.
01:39Pittsburgh isn't?
01:40Now, remember Ted Johnson used to talk about this a lot, how that fan base will kind of audibly quit on the team.
01:48Will they check out if you get off to get a good start?
01:51Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:53But I don't think they're, like, I know for sure that they're just a mediocre team.
01:57And I think that Aaron Rodgers versus the Texans defense wouldn't go so hot for Aaron Rodgers.
02:01I don't either.
02:02I'm 100% with you on that.
02:04It's interesting.
02:04So Jacksonville would be the one you'd least want to go play.
02:06Yeah, I think, like, Jacksonville's the best team out of those three.
02:09And the way they've been playing as of late, that's a good football team.
02:14I mean, there's just no – I went back and I semi-hate watched the Jaguars-Broncos game yesterday.
02:20I watched the entire game for the first time.
02:22Just kind of waiting for the moment where I could say, that was kind of flukish, wasn't it?
02:28Like, that.
02:28Never came, right?
02:29Yeah, no.
02:30The Jaguars, they pieced them.
02:32They just – the Jaguars put it on them.
02:34They won both sides of the ball.
02:37And Trevor Lawrence did some really good things in that game.
02:40So, yeah, Jacksonville would be my least desirable.
02:43Yeah.
02:44Jacksonville, to me, would feel like the easiest environment to go play in,
02:46just purely, like, weather, the reputed crowd noise at least, you know,
02:52the reputation of a Jacksonville.
02:54Kind of maybe in the playoffs it would be different.
02:55But I agree with you wholeheartedly in terms of how all three of those teams are playing right now.
03:01I give – man, I hate doing it.
03:03I give the Jags a lot of respect for the way they bounced back from that loss to the Texans.
03:08There's a lot of teams that would have – that loss to the Texans where they blew a 19-point lead in the fourth quarter
03:12would have beat a lot of teams for the next two weeks after that.
03:15They came back the next week, and they took the Chargers to the woodshed the next week.
03:20They beat the Chargers like 35-6 the next week after that.
03:24They've been on a roll ever since.
03:25The stat that I had sent you yesterday, which was basically something along the lines of, like, of teams that are – of teams – let's see.
03:36By pro football references measure, the Patriots have played the 10th easiest schedule of any team since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.
03:44Holy crap.
03:45It was that long?
03:46And the second easiest of any team in the 21st century.
03:50Whose is easier, does it say?
03:52No, but it did go through – oh, that was a Bill Barnwell article.
03:57And in the article I had gone through – I don't have the link right now,
03:59but he had gone through some of the teams that had basically had amassed the record the Patriots have
04:06against a really, really absurdly easy schedule.
04:10And there was a smattering of the 10 top teams that the Patriots were involved in that category.
04:16A couple that had won Super Bowls.
04:17A couple that had gotten rolled out in the wild card round.
04:20But there was more success than I would have wanted to see.
04:24And it's just the flat out – it's kind of like in, you know, a year where – when a Big Ten team doesn't have a really good schedule,
04:33but they're dominating everybody, you just flat out don't know how good they are until they get to do it.
04:38You do have – no matter how easy the schedule is, you've got to give them credit for just showing up every week,
04:43showing up every week and taking care of business.
04:45And lots of young quarterbacks don't look good against bad defenses the way Drake May has looked against bad defenses.
04:51Yep.
04:52You had something you wanted to ask the audience, you told me.
04:55Oh, okay.
04:56So when we were talking about that flight that I took into Pittsburgh, I was reminded –
05:00because it was a direct flight from Houston to Pittsburgh.
05:02So a lot of people from Houston on the flight, obviously.
05:04And when I get out, I'm walking up the jetway, and there's a woman with her two kids, and she's kind of looking at me.
05:14And I was just like – I said, hello.
05:16And she looks at me, and she's like, you look familiar.
05:21I know you.
05:22And this is – I get – this is hard for me because I always feel like – I don't want to be the kind of person that's like,
05:28don't bother me.
05:29I'm a star.
05:30Because, like, obviously I'm not a star, and that's – therein lies the problem.
05:34I'm a very minor celebrity, and some people do know me from something that I've done.
05:39But I also look – at times people think that I'm Case Keenum.
05:45Sometimes they'll think I'm John Rocker.
05:49And sometimes they'll think I'm Ed Helms.
05:51Yeah.
05:51The dentist from The Hangover.
05:53Yes, Andy Bernard.
05:55Yeah, Andy Bernard from The Office.
05:57So I always feel like I don't want to be stuck into some situation where I'm like, well, maybe you perhaps know me from local television or the Internet or something.
06:10When, in fact, they think I'm Case Keenum or somebody who's a bigger – you know, a larger, more notable person than myself.
06:16What do you do?
06:17I just kind of like, ah, I get that a lot.
06:19I'm not Case Keenum.
06:20And that's usually what I'll say.
06:22I get that a lot.
06:22I'm not – so I don't – am I being a jerk when I do that?
06:25I feel like if they actually knew me, then they would know me.
06:28And then I would have a conversation with them.
06:30Right.
06:30I'm always very – I'm always very flattered if somebody actually recognizes me in public.
06:35But I don't want to get – I don't want to sit there and have to have a six degree of separation without – well, also at some point suggesting like, well, maybe you know me from the Internet or local television.
06:48Do you watch the Sports Radio 610 stream?
06:52So did – so to get this straight, they did come up to you and say, do we know you from
06:56somewhere or they were just looking at you?
06:58Yeah, she said that.
06:58She said, like, you look familiar.
07:00Do I know you from somewhere?
07:01Okay, okay.
07:01And I was like, maybe, but probably not worth it.
07:05If you don't know who I am immediately, it's like – I feel like I'm not trying to be a jerk.
07:10No, no, no.
07:11But I feel like a jerk when I'm doing it.
07:12No, no, no.
07:13You say – I would say I used to play professional football.
07:16Maybe you're a fan of the Houston Texans.
07:17Yeah, but I don't – like, that almost sounds like I'm, like, trying to – I don't know.
07:21It feels like if I say that, I don't know.
07:25Well, I'd be the biggest jerk in the world if I ever played professional sports because that's what I would lead with.
07:30Okay, but that's a conversation I don't want to get into because I am.
07:33I'm on my way to baggage claim.
07:34Oh, oh.
07:35Well, matter of fact, I played for the Texans a long time ago.
07:38And then it's like, all right, like, I don't feel like having this conversation.
07:43So these people that walked up to you, this woman who's with a couple kids, they – so they never – they walked away from that conversation not really getting any closure on the whole thing.
07:51Either that or – well, the other thing I worry about is that maybe she was just being polite or didn't know for sure.
07:56Like, maybe she thought, oh, maybe – I think that's Seth Payne.
07:58And I don't – it's a – this is the fix I find myself in, Sean.
08:03I don't want to be in the conversation where I'm like, well, I'm a – on a very minor level, I'm somewhat notable in a very local way.
08:12I'm a pretty big deal on my YouTube channel.
08:16Yeah.
08:16I have many leather-bound books.
08:19And I don't want to be that.
08:21See, I don't know, man.
08:23But I also don't want the person to think – like, if she was being polite and actually knew who I was but wasn't sure, then I hope she didn't think I was a jerk for just kind of –
08:31I very politely just said, like, ah, I get that a lot.
08:34I look like a lot of people.
08:35I'm not Case Keenum.
08:36See, I think this is – this has always been a disconnect, I think, for you.
08:40It's like you don't – you are a size human being where you're always going to look like somebody to a lot of people in an airport.
08:46Yeah, like I'm big enough that they're kind of like – and then the people don't always – like, people say – whenever I say that people mistake me for Case Keenum,
08:53they're like, well, if they know the difference between a defensive lineman and a quarterback, not really.
08:57Like, I'm probably, like, 30 pounds heavier than Case Keenum right now.
09:00Yeah, but you –
09:00You know, I'm not that much bigger than him.
09:02Yeah, you are bigger than him.
09:03Right, right, right.
09:04But – but in people's mind's eye, they think of, you know –
09:09Athletes are all big.
09:09NFL players as all being gigantic.
09:11That's fair.
09:12That's fair.
09:13I don't know if I solved anything for you there other than to say I would be way cockier than you are in those situations.
09:18I don't know if that helps you or not.
09:20I guess so, yeah.
09:21I would be way cockier.
09:22I'd be like, yeah, play me NFL, man.
09:23Either I have to – I have to get comfortable at answering that question or I need to become a bigger celebrity.
09:29Yes.
09:30That's the last thing in the world I want.
09:31No, do it.
09:32It'd be great for the show.
09:33I really would.
09:34I remember that.
09:34There was a guy who was really big on the internet for a while in some corners, but he did all of his streaming from, like, wearing a mask, like one of those body suits.
09:41I haven't seen that, but I want to go find it.
09:42Or he had some kind of – he was like that DJ that wears, like, a helmet.
09:45Yeah.
09:46Or whatever.
09:46That's a guy I want to be.
09:48Okay, there you go.
09:48I love doing what I'm doing, but I also just don't – I also don't like anybody knowing who I am or what I'm doing.
09:54Yeah, it's a level of facelessness.
09:56Yes.
09:56That's good.
09:57I'll just get plastic surgery.
09:59Yeah.
09:59Oh, yeah.
09:59Do that.
10:00That'll go well.
10:01I'll get plastic surgery, but then also get a face mask of my current self.
10:05Yeah.
10:06So whenever I do anything on camera, I'll be wearing my Seth Payne mask, and you take it off, and I'm just – I'm a suave Mexican businessman.
10:15You're so far down the rabbit hole right now.
