00:00Bangladesh's interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, has vowed that national elections will go ahead as planned in February 2026.
00:08He says this would be the case despite alleged attempts by supporters of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to disrupt the electoral process.
00:18Yunus made the remarks during a phone call with the U.S. Special Envoy for South and Central Asia.
00:23He also accused Hasina, who fled to India in August 2024, following a mass uprising against her government, of inciting violence.
00:32The comments come after protests erupted across the country last week, following the death of prominent youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi, who had been an aspiring candidate in the upcoming election.
00:42Hadi was shot by mass attackers while leaving a mosque in Dhaka, and later died of his injuries while receiving treatment in Singapore.
00:49Security forces have since been deployed across Dhaka and other major cities to contain the unrest.
00:56The interim government has also declared a national day of mourning as tens of thousands attended Hadi's funeral.
