People who have grown up in care will be eligible for free prescriptions, dental treatment and eyecare until their 25th birthday under new government measures. Children’s Minister Josh MacAlister said the policy will improve the health barriers facing care leavers, alongside a package of expanded mental health support and employment opportunities. 00:00Today, we're announcing that in 2026, next year, we'll be rolling out free prescriptions, free eye care, and also free NHS dental care for care leavers.
00:13It's going to remove a lot of the obstacles that stand between them and having the good health that they deserve.
00:19And we're doing that on top of measures to also test a new approach to get mental health support closer to families where there's a crisis or care leavers as well.
00:31And we're finally getting the NHS to step up as a corporate parent so that it offers paid internships for care experience from people as well.
00:41So that as the UK's biggest employer, we actually leverage that to ensure there's opportunities in work for care leavers too.
