00:00Taiwan is still reeling after a mass stabbing in Taipei last Friday left four
00:04people dead, including the attacker. Police have increased security on the
00:08city's metro and at events like the Taipei Marathon in the aftermath. But
00:12despite the heightened response, on the streets of Taipei, feelings about public
00:15safety remain mixed.
00:30The fallout has spread beyond the Capitol. On Sunday, a woman in southern Taiwan was arrested
00:48after falsely reporting a bomb on a high-speed rail train heading to Kaohsiung. She now faces
00:52public intimidation charges. The stepped-up security has also extended beyond the public
00:57sphere to the Internet. Authorities are investigating 20 people over threatening posts or messages
01:03online. Three have already been arrested as officials seek to discourage potential copycat
01:07attacks. The Interior Ministry says it will deploy more than 17,000 security personnel at events
01:13through the new year and increase training and drills.
01:15The Ministry is also considering a rapid alert system, similar to Taiwan's earthquake warnings.
01:31Though feelings of shock from Friday's attacks still remain, authorities are hoping their efforts
01:36can bring a sense of normalcy and safety in what could be a subdued holiday season this year.
