00:01:21Right. And we see this in Egypt and China and Japan and Scandinavia and all over the place.

00:01:28And you have to wonder, are we seeing this same story over and over again in all of these places because people are witnessing the same alien visitors but misinterpreting them as gods?

00:01:40Right. And this would fit right in with the idea of E.T.'s jumpstarting civilization, because then they would have been the first rulers until humans were ready to take the reins.

00:01:53Truva, Turkey, for over 150 years, this small city has been the center of one of the greatest archaeological finds in modern history, the possible discovery of the legendary city of Troy.

00:02:12In 1868, amateur archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann set out to find what he believed was the city that served as the basis for the Trojan War,

00:02:28as described in one of the greatest pieces of classical literature, Homer's epic poem, The Iliad.

00:02:34Written in the 8th century B.C., Homer's Iliad tells the tale of a great war, born of feuding and jealous gods.

00:02:46While most scholars believe the story of the Trojan War was a work of fiction, Schliemann was determined to prove the myth was a reality.

00:02:59Heinrich Schliemann's discoveries rocked the archaeological world.

00:03:01armed with his copy of the Iliad, basically, he just decided that he was going to find Troy.

00:03:09And so he went and just dug a big hole.

00:03:14And when he went, he discovered the real Troy.

00:03:18But, if Homer's story of Troy was true, what would it say about other Greek stories and myths?

00:03:35Might those also be true?

00:03:39Did powerful gods and goddesses actually exist?

00:03:42And, if so, where did they come from?

00:03:53Hellas, also known as Greece.

00:03:58Each day, thousands of tourists visit temples and monuments built to honor the gods of another age.

00:04:04These ancient sites reflect a powerful reverence for beings that supposedly ruled the world thousands of years ago.

00:04:25When you look at many of the mythologies around the world, they have these stories of gods coming down from the sky.

00:04:38There's a beautiful description of the way that the gods move, like, when they kind of come down to the earth.

00:04:48You get the sense of them gliding down, but the way that they move is kind of beyond time.

00:04:54It just kind of happens.

00:04:55If the ancient Greeks invented the stories of gods as a primitive attempt to explain their universe,

00:05:02how can we account for similar deities found in widely different regions and cultures around the globe?

00:05:11Was it mere coincidence?

00:05:13Or was there a common origin for these gods, who supposedly traveled to earth from the skies?

00:05:20The earliest civilization we have, 3800 BC, the Sumerians actually give us visual descriptions of these beings

00:05:35and speak of this time that they lived amongst their living gods.

00:05:39They called their gods the Anunnaki, and that term simply meant those who from heaven come to earth.

00:05:45Mythology is chock full of these episodes of gods coming down to earth.

00:05:49I mean, because mythology is so interested in the relationship between gods and humans,

00:05:54there is necessarily going to be a lot of communication and communion between the two of them.

00:06:01In his book, Odyssey of the Gods, Eric von Daniken argues that the world's sacred books are full of descriptions,

00:06:10not of gods, but of supernatural beings interacting with humans.

00:06:15Some thousands of years ago, when our forefathers were still primitive,

00:06:21some extraterrestrials descended to our planet.

00:06:24And, because of misunderstanding, lake of technology,

00:06:28our forefathers thought that these extraterrestrials must be some gods.

00:06:34Mount Olympus, Greece's highest mountain.

00:06:45According to ancient myths, this site was the home of the gods.

00:06:52It was here on Mount Olympus that Zeus sat on his throne and determined the fate of mortal men.

00:06:59Whenever we have references to Mount Olympus,

00:07:04it is described to be this magnificent palace on top of Mount Olympus, allegedly.

00:07:12And the temple walls were always gleaming of gold or gleaming with silver,

00:07:18and a lot of little lights that they described as jewels.

00:07:21Well, if you look at that from a modern perspective,

00:07:29what if that place, Mount Olympus, wasn't necessarily the top of a mountain,

00:07:35but it was, in fact, a spaceship?

00:07:39Because it is described how sometimes there was a big rumbling with Mount Olympus,

00:07:44and the entire top lifted off.

00:07:47But if Mount Olympus was home to alien visitors,

00:07:53could Zeus have been their leader?

00:07:57According to both the Iliad and the Odyssey,

00:08:00Zeus was often depicted as wielding a lightning bolt.

00:08:05It appears to be a very powerful weapon,

00:08:08because he could destroy full cities with this thunderbolt weapon of his.

00:08:16Similarly, Zeus' brother, Poseidon, the god of the sea, was armed with a trident.

00:08:23He was able to create tsunamis, tidal waves, with this weapon.

00:08:29The trident weapon of Poseidon seems to have been something more than just a pitchfork.

00:08:39So is it possible that the lightning bolt and the trident is some type of a direct energy device?

00:08:52Arguably, one of the most important of the Greek gods was Apollo,

00:08:56who rode the skies in his chariot of fire.

00:09:00Apollo 1st was the teacher of the young Greeks living there.

00:09:07He teached them how to make buildings on the mountain, on the hillside.

00:09:12He teached them how to make roads.

00:09:14He teached them in astronomy.

00:09:19Centuries later, when Rome ruled over Europe and the Mediterranean,

00:09:23from the 1st century BC until the 7th century AD,

00:09:28the Romans paid homage to gods similar to the Greeks.

00:09:33Zeus was now known as Jupiter.

00:09:37Poseidon was called Neptune.

00:09:41But Apollo was known to both the Romans and the Greeks.

00:09:45Coincidence?

00:09:47Or, as most ancient astronaut theorists believe,

00:09:51was it the historical account of powerful beings that came to Earth thousands of years ago?

00:09:59We know that the extraterrestrials more than likely are the source of what they call gods.

00:10:04How did they get here?

00:10:06More than likely in some type of craft.

00:10:08What we map into our myths and in our legends are incredible stories, incredible events.

00:10:44and suggest further evidence of these otherworldly rulers

00:10:48can be found within the hieroglyphic inscriptions of the Maya.

00:10:58You know, the Maya of Central America are one of the most successful civilizations in history,

00:11:03lasting over 2,000 years.

00:11:06And many of the Mayan rulers claimed a connection to the gods.

00:11:10One of their most intriguing rulers has to be King Pakal,

00:11:13who's become famous for this very curious carving on the lid of his sarcophagus.

00:11:18It appears to portray him in the cockpit of some sort of a craft.

00:11:22Oh, absolutely.

00:11:23When I look at that carving, what I see is a breathing apparatus.

00:11:27He's manipulating some controls.

00:11:29His feet are on pedals.

00:11:31And it seems to be exhaust flames at the bottom of the carving.

00:11:35So to me, this is King Pakal piloting a spaceship.

00:11:42Central America.

00:11:46Here, in western Honduras,

00:11:49lie the impressive ruins of the ancient Maya city of Copan.

00:11:53And though Copan's temples, pyramids, and monuments

00:11:59rank among the most important of any Mayan sites,

00:12:04researchers looking to explain the incredible achievements of the Maya

00:12:08have been drawn to a 72-step structure

00:12:12known as the hieroglyphic stairway.

00:12:15The hieroglyphic stairway at Copan

00:12:18was constructed in the early 700s AD

00:12:22with the intent of writing out the history of Copan at that time.

00:12:29And so it was designed as a public monument

00:12:32to the glory and success of all the kings

00:12:36from Yashkoukoumo all the way to the 13th one

00:12:40who commissioned it to be built.

00:12:42Carved into 1,200 stones in the massive monument,

00:12:48the ancient Maya symbols known as glyphs

00:12:51make up what historians believe

00:12:53is one of the oldest and most sophisticated systems of writing.

00:12:59But for centuries,

00:13:01the glyphs found throughout Mesoamerica

00:13:03were undecipherable.

00:13:05Then, in 1880,

00:13:11German librarian and anthropologist

00:13:14Ernst Forstmann cracked the code.

00:13:18Ernst Forstmann was a librarian at Dresden.

00:13:21And in his desk,

00:13:22he kept one of the four Maya books,

00:13:25the Dresden Codex.

00:13:26He was a brilliant mathematician

00:13:28and extremely logical

00:13:32and had enormous insights.

00:13:34And at a time when we couldn't read

00:13:36a single Maya hieroglyph,

00:13:38he was able to figure out

00:13:39the Maya calligraphy.

00:13:43Maya hieroglyphic writing is very robust

00:13:45and that's because it uses really two components.

00:13:48There are lolographs.

00:13:49Lolographs are really pictures

00:13:51that represent entire words.

00:13:53So, balam, for example,

00:13:55which is jaguar,

00:13:56could be written with just the head of a jaguar.

00:13:59On the other, we have these things

00:14:00that we call phonetic complements.

00:14:02And these are glyphs,

00:14:03they're images that represent sounds.

00:14:07According to interpretations

00:14:09of the hieroglyphic stairway,

00:14:11the glyphs chronicle not only the history,

00:14:15but also the origin

00:14:16of the ancient Maya rulers.

00:14:19The hieroglyphs are really attached

00:14:21to what was important to royalty at the time,

00:14:24and that was lineage

00:14:25and the genealogies of the kings.

00:14:27They went out of their way

00:14:29to demonstrate how they were connected

00:14:31to their ancestors

00:14:32and the gods of their ancestors

00:14:35to establish their right to rule.

00:14:48the 13th ruler of Copan.

00:14:51And he's depicted here

00:14:52on the front in all of his finery.

00:14:55And then the sculptor

00:14:57put a hieroglyphic passage on the side.

00:15:00We don't think commoners could read,

00:15:03but all the elites could

00:15:04and the king could.

00:15:05So he or another elite individual

00:15:08could come here

00:15:09and impress people

00:15:11by saying,

00:15:12this demonstrates the semi-divinity

00:15:15of our king

00:15:16and his power

00:15:17to intercede between us

00:15:19and the heavens.

00:15:23But just what was

00:15:25the real source of power

00:15:26and authority

00:15:27behind the Maya priests

00:15:29and kings?

00:15:31Do the hieroglyphs reveal

00:15:32an otherworldly truth

00:15:34to their origin

00:15:35as the Maya themselves maintain?

00:15:39Ancient astronaut theorists

00:15:45What we have to think about today

00:15:47is where did the origin

00:15:49of the priesthood come from?

00:15:51And the origin is nothing else

00:17:07that the Mayans

00:17:08were absolutely convinced

00:17:10about the existence

00:17:11of otherworldly beings

00:17:12and that they actually believed

00:17:14that these beings

00:17:15manifested themselves

00:17:16regularly

00:17:17at preordained moments

00:17:19of time.

00:17:22Perhaps further evidence

00:17:23of the Mayan belief

00:17:25in the existence

00:17:25of extraterrestrial beings

00:17:29in their daily rituals

00:17:30of human sacrifice.

00:17:37Scholars believe

00:17:39that blood offerings

00:17:40were seen as an act

00:17:41of devotion

00:17:49because they were still doing it

00:17:55on wall paintings,

00:17:58and in sculptures

00:17:58that show people

00:17:59letting their own blood

00:18:01and sacrificing

00:18:06The Mayans had

00:18:07a complex pantheon

00:18:09which involved

00:18:10gods from the sky

00:18:11and the rulers

00:18:12were supposed to be

00:18:13descendants

00:18:14of these gods

00:18:15and they believed

00:18:16that these gods

00:18:17demanded sacrifices

00:18:18of them

00:18:19and that their blood,

00:18:21the blood of their kings,

00:18:22was the ideal sacrifice

00:18:24for the gods.

00:18:28the Mayans

00:18:29began to take captives,

00:18:31particularly other royal captives,

00:18:33and execute them

00:18:34using their blood

00:18:36as the gift

00:18:39to the gods.

00:18:41Blood sacrifice

00:18:44that we humans

00:18:45did ourselves

00:18:47because we didn't understand

00:18:49that what we dealt with

00:22:26at a very early age,

00:22:27and then takes this city

00:22:29that's been destroyed

00:22:30and now brings it up

00:22:32to what becomes

00:22:34cities of the late

00:22:35classic period.

00:22:37This is the famous

00:22:41Temple of the Inscriptions

00:22:42behind me,

00:22:44perhaps the most famous

00:22:45pyramid in all

00:22:47of the Mayan world.

00:22:49It was in 1948

00:22:50that the French-Mexican

00:22:52archaeologist

00:22:53Alberto Ruil

00:22:54began his excavations

00:22:57at the top

00:22:58of the Temple of Inscriptions.

00:22:59What he found there

00:23:02was the famous staircase

00:23:04leading down

00:23:05into the depths

00:23:07of the pyramid.

00:23:08But the staircase

00:23:09was completely

00:23:11filled in

00:23:12with rubble

00:23:13of small stones

00:23:15and dirt.

00:23:16It took him

00:23:18four years

00:23:20to slowly excavate

00:23:22step by step

00:23:24down the pyramid

00:23:25until he finally

00:23:27came

00:23:27to the tomb

00:23:30of Lord Pakal

00:23:31and the giant

00:23:33sarcophagus
