00:00What I love most about being a designer is feeling like I can do anything.
00:07Sewing is my life. I can't imagine not doing this.
00:12I have talent. I am a force to be reckoned with.
00:20I know who I am and I know what I want to make.
00:23I'm ready for this.
00:24I'm a designer that is different.
00:26That's something that the fashion world needs to see.
00:29I have to win. It would change so much for me.
00:34In this competition, sometimes you're in and sometimes you're out.
00:40Let's go. I'm ready.
00:51I'm so excited. Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to do Project Runway and now I'm here.
00:57Oh my gosh. Wow.
01:01I am lost for words right now. I am here for a reason. I have it in me. I feel like I could win this.
01:10This is crazy.
01:11Oh my God. Like this is real. I made it to Project Runway Canada. I'm doing this for my people.
01:21A little feather. A little feather. A little feather. That's so beautiful. I'm Charles.
01:25I'm the only Quebecois here and I feel kind of great. I love to present the Quebec people.
01:32Unbelievable. Nice to meet you. I love it. I love it.
01:36This is surreal. It just feels like I'm waiting for somebody to be like, psych, you know, something.
01:41Wait, you're Charles, right?
01:43Charles is a designer that is pretty much known here in Toronto. So to see him, I'm a bit worried for myself.
01:49You're a huge competition.
01:53What's happening?
01:55Oh my God.
01:57Someone important is coming out of that plane.
02:00Oh my God.
02:05Oh my God.
02:07Coco Rocha.
02:09Oh my God.
02:10Coco looks so fabulous. She just exudes a confident energy. I just hope I can dress her one day.
02:19Oh my goodness.
02:21Welcome to Project Runway Canada, designers.
02:26This is such a big moment for all of you. But don't forget, only one of you will be named Canada's next great fashion designer.
02:34Want to know what you're competing for?
02:36Yes!
02:38A feature spread in Elle Canada magazine.
02:41Woo!
02:43And from TD, a career launching investment of $100,000.
02:49Oh!
02:51Crazy!
02:53That's insane.
02:55But I'm not the only one joining you on this ride.
02:57Okay.
02:59She's a celebrated designer, author, activist, and industry visionary.
03:03Your mentor, Aurora James.
03:07Aurora is incredible. She's had a huge impact on the fashion world. It's so inspiring.
03:13We love you!
03:15I am so honored to be your mentor.
03:19Are you ready to hear about your first challenge?
03:21Yes!
03:23Well, designers, I've come with some baggage.
03:26Oh!
03:28I am nervous.
03:30Are we using other people's clothes?
03:33Please step up and claim one.
03:36Open them up and take a look!
03:38I'm nervous for them.
03:40Oh my God!
03:42Denim!
03:44Yes!
03:45I'm very excited.
03:46I like working with denim because I'm the master of upcycling.
03:50I have my own design brand. It is called Obnoxious.
03:53Everything I do is denim. Everything.
03:55Denim is not the easiest material to work with.
03:59It's thick, it's bulky, so this is a challenge.
04:03Den-um?
04:05The Canadian tuxedo used to be a punchline, but now it's no joke.
04:10Fashion houses like Louis Vuitton and Chanel have elevated this iconic look.
04:15Giving denim on denim its moment on the runway time and time again.
04:20For your first challenge, we want you to create a high-fashion, runway-ready, all-denim look.
04:26From her.
04:28And you'll find everything else you need in the workroom.
04:30Your model cards can be found inside your suitcases.
04:33This is a two-day challenge.
04:35And your one-shot to make a killer first impression.
04:39It's your chance to show me and the judges exactly who you are as a designer.
04:42With a look that is authentically you.
04:45There's a lot of pressure to reflect my aesthetic out of denim.
04:49It's gonna be really, really tough.
04:51All right, you have 30 minutes to sketch your ideas, and I'll meet you in the workroom later.
04:55And the next time I see you, it will be on the other runway.
04:58Designers, your 30 minutes starts now.
05:03Woo!
05:04Okay.
05:05Here you go.
05:07Hello.
05:10Hello.
05:12This is gonna be fun.
05:14Is your model a man or a woman?
05:15I believe they're non-binary.
05:17Okay, slay.
05:18I always try to design with the queer community in mind.
05:21I identify as non-binary as well.
05:23So for this challenge, I'm doing this whole gender bendy moment with this pointed halter neck corset.
05:29Dramatic hip peignets.
05:31And we might get a little sailor hat out of me.
05:33Do you work with denim a lot?
05:34Actually, yeah.
05:35My brand is a denim-based brand.
05:38I started my brand two years ago.
05:41It's called Maison Prefontaine.
05:43Each day of my life, I'm touching denim.
05:46So I'm thinking a maxi gown with a lot of colors to create a big ombre effect.
05:53I'm super confident.
05:55I'm terrified.
05:57I don't do menswear.
05:59Oh, my God.
06:00I have been a designer for 10 years.
06:05I'm a really big jacket designer.
06:08So I'm making a military jacket and some pants.
06:14I'm good at pants, but these are men's pants.
06:18It's so out of my comfort zone.
06:20You kill it.
06:22I feel like all my ideas are on this paper, and I need this taken away from me before I overthink.
06:27I think I'm set.
06:28Time's up.
06:30Let's go to the workroom.
06:33What did you pack for our trip?
06:35Denim!
06:37Let's get it.
06:38At stake for the winner from TD, a career-launching investment of $100,000 and a feature in Elle Canada magazine.
06:50With global supermodel Coco Rocha, fashion designer Spencer Badu, creative director Aurora James, and legendary fashion journalist Jeanne Becker.
07:01This is Project Runway Canada.
07:04Watch me do my thing.
07:10Oh, my God.
07:12Oh, my God.
07:14Oh, my God.
07:16Okay.
07:17It is hitting me that I'm on Project Runway Canada, seeing the space.
07:20I'm like, oh, my God, I'm here.
07:22Where's my spot?
07:23No, I'm right there.
07:25Curtis, you're here.
07:26Are we table besties?
07:28This is going to be fun.
07:29Yes.
07:34I'm going through all of my denim right now.
07:36I'm kind of freaking out because I don't even know if I have enough to fit the model.
07:40Do you have a white that you're willing to give up?
07:43I kind of need the white.
07:45Do you have a gray? I'll take a gray.
07:46There's a giant risk with my design because I'm going to be shredding the denim, and I don't know if I'm going to finish it.
07:52Do you usually do, like, more gowns and stuff?
07:56Oh, no. I do a combination of everything. I actually love streetwear.
07:59I've done couture. I've done streetwear.
08:02So I'm making an asymmetrical ombre effect dress.
08:06It's going to go from black to white, and everything has to be perfect.
08:10Winning Project Runway Canada would be very validating in the Canadian fashion landscape.
08:16I want to win this whole thing.
08:18I just don't like what I have to do.
08:19Yeah.
08:20And it's just going to be a lot.
08:21How's it going?
08:22I'm just adding colors.
08:24In my culture, they used to use the red eyebrows from the ptarmigans, and they would use it as trim at the bottom of our garments.
08:31So that's kind of my thinking behind this.
08:34So in the Western Arctic, our fashion is very influenced by the fur trade.
08:39Part of what I like to do is taking our traditional materials and using them in new ways.
08:44So I'm planning to make a cocktail dress that looks very high fashion.
08:50My dream is to do this full time, you know.
08:53I have five children.
08:54I want them to see that this is possible for someone from Duk Duyuk Duk.
08:59I'm like proof that it's never too late to start chasing your dreams.
09:03You can definitely do it.
09:04Okay.
09:06I'm so a denim girl.
09:07I often wear denim on denim.
09:09I grew up on a farm, so this is my challenge.
09:12I'm thinking a slouchy jacket and a matching pant.
09:16I feel like it's going to have to be patchwork.
09:19Patchwork can come off really crafty if it's not perfectly executed.
09:23So I just have to make sure that it doesn't look like a DIY project.
09:25All right, let's start cutting open jeans.
09:30Hi, designer!
09:32Hi!
09:34So this is your very first challenge.
09:38I really want to see what you're up to.
09:43All right, Leland, how's it going?
09:46Oh, wow. Okay, we're going for it.
09:47Yeah.
09:48This design is definitely in my realm.
09:50I make costumes.
09:52I make costumes every day of my life.
09:55So I want to do more of a street wear meets Canadian tuxedo,
09:59and I'm adding a very oversized ruched pant
10:03and this deconstructed coat with this little corset.
10:06This is our first challenge, so I want to show technical skill
10:10and the camp and the fun of fashion.
10:12You can make something fun, but high fashion means it's also art.
10:16Yes, of course.
10:17So I pretty much started designing around two years ago.
10:21Self-thought?
10:22Yeah, self-thought.
10:24My aesthetic has a lot of punk rock vibe to it.
10:27You'll see me using vinyls, leather.
10:30So I want to create a two-piece garment for a rebel,
10:33like a good girl gone bad.
10:35Let's see how it goes.
10:37Hi, Naomi.
10:38Hey, girl.
10:39How's it going?
10:40I'm losing my mind.
10:41You are? Yeah.
10:42Why?
10:43I feel like I'm really in my head.
10:44I haven't even been graduated for a year yet from fashion school.
10:46Don't let that hold you back.
10:48I never graduated fashion school.
10:50Okay.
10:51I'm really excited to see what's going on.
10:54I have a little bolero moment.
10:55Okay.
10:56And a jellyfish denim skirt with lots of chunks of denim coming down.
11:00And I'm kind of debating the top.
11:04Which one's giving you the most high fashion?
11:06This one.
11:08The bra top?
11:10Yeah.
11:11Um, okay.
11:12Which one's giving you the most high fashion?
11:14I don't know.
11:15I feel like maybe it hasn't been drawn yet.
11:20I think you have to, like, pair it back a little bit.
11:23Maybe what I'm making isn't high fashion.
11:25Maybe I'm going in the wrong direction.
11:27I've wasted so much time.
11:29I don't know what I'm doing yet, and I don't even know where to start.
11:32What is yours?
11:33I'll show it to you, but you can't laugh.
11:34Okay.
11:35I don't know.
11:36I'm hoping my designs don't look like my drawing.
11:37I wanted to bring up elegant twists to denim.
11:38So I'm making a flowy denim train dress.
11:39Denim's not giving me flowy.
11:40No, but it will give you a train.
11:41Okay.
11:42I think.
11:43Where is all this self-doubt coming from?
11:44Because I'm sure.
11:45Well, it sounds super high fashion to me.
11:46Yeah.
11:47That's what's most important.
11:48Ah, I'm bleeding.
11:49Um, it's...
11:50Oh, no, are you okay?
11:51Just a little pin moment.
11:52Not great for my white fabric.
11:53I'm hoping my designs don't look like my drawing.
11:54I'm hoping my designs don't look like my drawing.
11:56I wanted to bring up elegant twists to denim.
11:57So I'm making a flowy denim train dress.
11:59Denim's not giving me flowy.
12:00No, but it will give you a train.
12:02Okay.
12:03I think.
12:04Where is all this self-doubt coming from?
12:06Because I'm sure.
12:07Well, sounds super high fashion to me.
12:08Yeah.
12:09That's what's most important.
12:10Just a little pin moment.
12:11Not great for my white fabric.
12:13I was very lucky to get these white jeans.
12:16Because I want to create the look of a classic tuxedo shirt.
12:20And I want to do a skirt.
12:22I think my design philosophy is a bit different because I am self-taught.
12:27I actually did a science degree.
12:30I wrote the MCAT and I applied to medical school.
12:32But I'm here to prove that I can do this.
12:35Okay, that's not right.
12:40Something didn't go according to plan here.
12:43I need to figure out what it is.
12:45With this design, I want it to look high fashion.
12:49So I am creating a strapless dress with a plunging peak neckline and a floral applique motif.
12:56My concern is that the judges might feel like I didn't push myself enough.
13:01Pushing yourself within this context isn't always about the most work.
13:07Mm-hmm.
13:08It's about the most beautifully executed vision.
13:12Mm-hmm.
13:13Okay.
13:14I'm impressed with some of what I'm seeing.
13:17But there's only an hour left tonight.
13:20Get on it.
13:21Awesome.
13:22Thank you, Aurora.
13:23Bye.
13:24Bye, Aurora.
13:25Okay, I'm going to go sew these and hope for the best.
13:29So fast.
13:30I love this machine.
13:32Okay, my jeans are done.
13:34Yeah.
13:36I'm looking around and I'm seeing other designers at the machine sewing already.
13:40And I'm a little bit nervous because I haven't started any of my actual sewing yet.
13:45There's no time for this.
13:46So I'm thinking maybe I'll just create a tunic dress.
13:48I'll probably have to utilize all of tomorrow to sew it together.
13:51So I'm just making fabric right now.
13:54Yo.
13:58Yeah, that looks good.
13:59I'm almost wondering if it needs the overpiece.
14:01Like, do I want to put more work for myself?
14:04I think it needs it.
14:06I'm overwhelmed.
14:07Usually, this is something that would take me weeks to finish.
14:13Two days?
14:15I have a lot to do and I'm hoping that I have enough time.
14:19This is hard.
14:21That's it for today.
14:23It's time to go home.
14:24Hell yeah.
14:25Good morning, sunshine.
14:26Let's do it.
14:27Straight to the machine.
14:28I know what I'm doing today.
14:29I'm doing the skirt as a short.
14:31Yesterday, I knew that I had to start from scratch.
14:47So now I need to go with what I think is high fashion.
14:52I'm trying to decide how much ass I want to show.
14:57This is looking so good.
14:59But I feel terrified that the biggest challenge in my life is going to be presented to Jeannie Becker.
15:09Hey, everyone.
15:10Hey!
15:11The models are going to be here soon.
15:12I'm not sweating.
15:13I'm not sweating at all.
15:14Hi, Curtis.
15:15Hello.
15:16How's it going?
15:17This is a pannier in progress.
15:18I'm creating a whole universe with this look.
15:19I'm really inspired by historical silhouettes, like 17th century hip panniers, and bringing
15:28them into the modern fashion world.
15:29This is looking great.
15:30Just keep in mind, we want a chic first impression.
15:34Oh, I just ripped the .
15:37I'm seeing a new one.
15:39I'm not sweating.
15:40I'm not sweating.
15:41I'm not sweating.
15:42I'm not sweating at all.
15:43Hi, Curtis.
15:44Hello.
15:45How's it going?
15:46I'm seeing a nude body form.
15:49The models are going to be here soon.
15:52I feel like it's sewing time.
15:54Yes, it is.
15:55So I'm just kind of panicked.
15:58The individual pieces are all stitched up.
16:00Yes.
16:01I just have to put the bigger pieces together.
16:03I hopefully have something for the models to try on.
16:05I'm scared.
16:06First impressions sometimes can either make or break you.
16:10I hope that the judges can see my personal take on what elegant is.
16:15I'm just nervous.
16:16I don't have the time to do that.
16:19The corset is going to be good.
16:24I think my secret weapon is my speed.
16:28I've been doing this for so long that I don't second guess myself.
16:33Like, that's gorgeous.
16:34I am half Chinese, half Scottish.
16:37And my Chinese family immigrated here in the 50s.
16:40And opened up a dry cleaner that is still there to this day.
16:43They're still working it.
16:44They have such a strong work ethic.
16:46So that's kind of always been instilled in me.
16:48Oh my God.
16:49So cool.
16:50That looks amazing.
16:53To be surrounded by such talented designers is intimidating.
16:58I feel like I'm going to throw up.
17:03I just don't think that it will work as like a short.
17:08I don't know what to do with my design.
17:10I have a million ideas going on in my head.
17:13But I have all of this beautiful patchwork denim.
17:16So I'm going to sew it together and I'll figure it out.
17:20I just need to trust the process.
17:26Hi little feather.
17:27Hi.
17:28So what else are we doing here?
17:32We're making it deadly.
17:36Okay.
17:37Right now what I'm seeing is like a jacket that was a jacket
17:40that still looks like a jacket.
17:42And similarly the pant.
17:44I'm not really focused on the pants.
17:47The judges are going to be looking also at the pants.
17:50Yep.
17:51Because what I don't want is for them to look at this
17:53and be like this is the jacket that they gave her
17:56and she only just added a collar.
17:58It's like did she do anything?
18:00Then that means it's like factory ready in my eyes.
18:03Factory ready.
18:04Yes.
18:05We need runway ready.
18:07All right.
18:17Like I missed it.
18:23I missed the boat.
18:25You know.
18:29I feel like she's correct.
18:32That's why it hurts so much.
18:34I just have no choice but to take deep breaths
18:38and remember why I'm here for the runway.
18:41And it's like wait a minute.
18:43You're on freaking project runway.
18:46And you got to be ready for the runway.
18:48You okay?
18:50I am good.
18:51All good.
18:53The vision is coming to life.
18:56Oh my God.
18:57I know.
18:58Oh .
18:59I messed up.
19:00How?
19:01Wrong side?
19:02Yeah.
19:03When I was patching the train fabric together.
19:05I didn't flip it the other way.
19:06I made a one skirt just facing one side.
19:08And it's not right.
19:09I'm just going to make a full round circle skirt.
19:10Instead of a train.
19:11Screw it.
19:12Oh my goodness.
19:13I'll make it work.
19:14I think I need a model.
19:15All right.
19:16Come on in.
19:17Models.
19:18Hey.
19:19So cute.
19:20Oh my goodness.
19:21Oh my goodness.
19:22I'll make it work.
19:25I think I need a model.
19:26All right.
19:27Come on in.
19:28Models.
19:29Hey.
19:30Oh my goodness.
19:33Hello.
19:34Yes.
19:35I'm just adding the finishing stitches to the skirt.
19:39And then I want to fit you in quickly.
19:41Yes.
19:43Are you okay?
19:44You're surviving.
19:45You guys have 45 minutes.
19:49Make the most of it.
19:50The pressure is on.
19:51Good.
19:52I'm actually very impressed with how this fits you.
19:54Okay.
19:55Oh.
19:56Yes.
19:57The dress looks amazing.
19:58It fits her like a glove.
20:00The fit is perfect.
20:01So now I just have to add the flowers in denim.
20:04How long is this going to take?
20:06A few hours.
20:08I just want you to be mindful of not having too many ideas.
20:13Focus on getting the dress really elegant.
20:18Yeah.
20:19It looks really cool.
20:20Do something with your arm.
20:21Yeah.
20:22There we go.
20:23Oh wow.
20:24Yeah.
20:25It looks great.
20:26I'm super happy.
20:27My jacket is coming together.
20:28I love the pockets on the side.
20:30Now I have to put the grommets on the collar.
20:33I really love it.
20:34I love it.
20:35Oh my God.
20:36This is so good.
20:38I'm so happy.
20:40I just worked so fast.
20:42You really don't have room to make mistakes here.
20:45And you have to take a gamble and hope it pays off.
20:47Oh my God.
20:48I love it.
20:49Let me see from afar.
20:50Yes.
20:51My model is looking amazing in this outfit.
20:54They still have things to finish.
20:56But this is an introduction to me.
20:57It needs to look flawless.
20:59And I think I can do that.
21:00All right.
21:01Let's get you changed off.
21:03Designers, the fitting is officially over.
21:06Models, I need you guys out.
21:08Goodbye.
21:09See you tomorrow.
21:10Bye.
21:11First runway show is tomorrow.
21:15So stay focused and get it done.
21:19Good night.
21:21Yeah, I know we got work to do.
21:26It looks like it's almost there, but I still have to hand sew it.
21:29It's my first runway tomorrow and I do not want to be the first one to go home.
21:33So I'm hoping tomorrow I have enough time to polish everything up.
21:38All righty, folks.
21:39Time to wrap it up.
21:41Brilliant day, guys.
21:50All right, let's get it.
21:51Let's go runway two!
21:54Let's get started.
21:55It's the first runway of the entire competition.
22:00I'm feeling very secure.
22:01I just need to press the out of this dress.
22:04I need to distress the out of the hem.
22:07So I feel like I'm in a really great spot.
22:12Hey, designers.
22:14It is your very first runway day.
22:17Let's get your models in here.
22:19Look how good they look from the front.
22:24Great work, baby.
22:25We're going to eat up.
22:26Designers, you have 30 minutes for your final fittings.
22:37The model is here and I am nowhere near ready.
22:40I have to use half of my fitting time to sew this denim floral applique.
22:46It took forever.
22:47Has this been on the model yet this morning?
22:48Not yet.
22:49I'm going to fit her now.
22:50I've got so much to do.
22:51The hem has to be done.
22:53Do you think I should leave it raw?
22:55No.
22:56I would work on perfecting it.
22:57Even if the judges come close to it,
22:59we don't want them to be like...
23:05I am not ready.
23:07Sorry, girl.
23:08You're stuck with this kind of designer.
23:10I still have the zipper to put together.
23:12I still have the hem to do.
23:14I'm nervous as hell because I don't have something finished.
23:17I took the zipper off to fix it.
23:19Okay.
23:20Wow.
23:21Okay.
23:22We've got to close it up and we've got to get this chalk off.
23:23Yeah.
23:24Because we're literally 10 minutes.
23:25Okay, get off.
23:26Get off, get off, get off.
23:27Hold on.
23:29Now turn to me.
23:30All right, designers, it's time to bring your models to the L'Oreal Paris Glam Room.
23:35Mmm.
23:38So the whole idea is she's a good girl gone bad.
23:42So I mainly wanted a hair up.
23:47So for hair and makeup, I'm thinking we go 1920s glam.
23:50My staple product in my kit is the Panorama Mascara.
23:55It's going to fan out your lashes, giving you corner to corner volume.
23:59The eyes are going to look bigger and lifted.
24:03Let's go to the runway.
24:04Let's do this.
24:06It looks so good.
24:08All right, you're fraying the bottom?
24:12Yeah, I'm trying to.
24:13I feel like you're last minute trying to do something that you don't need to do.
24:19Last looks, everyone.
24:20Oh, .
24:21Just went right through.
24:23Okay, we're good.
24:25All right, designers, let's go.
24:29Promoto has a dress.
24:30I'm hoping that I'm at least safe.
24:33Let's get to the runway.
24:35Wish me luck.
24:38Yeah.
24:54Hello, designers.
24:55Hi.
24:57Welcome to your first runway.
25:01Tonight, first impressions are everything.
25:05Your challenge was to create a high fashion.
25:07All denim look that reflects your design DNA.
25:12We want to see your designer jeans.
25:16There are 12 of you now, but after tonight, only 11 will continue on in the competition.
25:22It's time to meet your judges.
25:26Fashion designer, Spencer Badu.
25:31Hey, designers.
25:32Journalist and fashion television legend, the Jeannie Becker.
25:39Hey, everybody.
25:40Hi.
25:41Great to see you all.
25:42And our special guest judge.
25:43He's dressed Viola Davis, Michelle Obama, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.
25:49Whoa.
25:50Please welcome designer Jason Wu.
25:53Hi, designers.
25:57We'll be scoring your designs as they come down the runway.
26:01Let's start the show.
26:05Wow.
26:06So good.
26:07I have full body chills.
26:08The fit is fitting.
26:09The hat is fitting.
26:10This is a completely authentic expression of my experience as being a non-binary individual.
26:26Oh.
26:29I'm not used to making menswear at all, but this garment definitely represents my aesthetic, especially with the D-rings and the harnesses.
26:37It's so good, dude.
26:40I've really honed in on what my style is, and that's just rock and roll.
26:43I'm super proud.
26:49This look is powerful.
26:51The collar is sharp.
26:53I feel like it all came together.
27:01I'm just so obsessed with my look.
27:04The ombre, the colors are working, the shape is working.
27:08It's a really proud moment.
27:10Anxiety is just through the roof.
27:14All I see is the imperfections, but the flow, the elegance.
27:20This is a definition of who I am as a designer.
27:25I just hope they see the beauty in what I made.
27:34Yes, mama.
27:35Yes, mama.
27:38My look is elegant.
27:40It's timeless.
27:41It's sophisticated.
27:43But did I do enough?
27:45I have some doubts.
27:51Oh, yeah.
27:52Yes.
27:54I am super proud of what I've created.
27:56This is very representative of who I am as a designer.
28:00With this look, I'm really trying to prove that I am one of the top competitors.
28:06You do that. You do that.
28:08It's amazing seeing my look come down the runway.
28:14This look screams Maya in every way.
28:17It plays with masculinity, femininity, historical references.
28:22I love it.
28:28I want to show the judges that my culture influences my fashion, but it can also be high fashion for the runway.
28:35The hood is a cultural design feature I learned from my great-grandmother.
28:42I hope they see something in my design.
28:45That corset looks so good on her. It's so snatched. It literally is hitting her in all the right places. And then the pants match perfectly.
29:00Head to toe denim. Canadian tuxedo to the max.
29:04I have come so far with this design. I made multiple garments. I have come back from the trenches and I produced something that I am proud of.
29:22My blood is draining from my body.
29:27Ooh.
29:29I love it. I've never seen a look like this before. I painted with fabric and I feel like I'm showing all of my technical skills that I've amassed through decades of fashion.
29:39How the f*** do that?
29:48That smells really good.
29:51Designers, please step up to the runway.
29:59Tonight, some of your looks spoke volumes, while others barely whispered.
30:07When I call your name, please step forward.
30:12Rome.
30:14Littlefeather.
30:17Charles.
30:19Cat.
30:22Dalarumic.
30:24And...
30:26Delaine.
30:29If I called your name, you are in.
30:33And can leave the runway. Congratulations.
30:42Sorry.
30:46What a relief.
30:48That means the six of you make up the highest and the lowest scores.
30:52One of you will be our winner and one of you will be out.
30:58So let's look at one of our faves of the night.
31:05Thank the Lord.
31:06Yes.
31:07Oh my God.
31:09Curtis, I got flight attendant vibes out of this.
31:12I was looking at a lot of denim and it took me to a super masculine, tough work wear type area, which then drew my mind to flip that completely on its head.
31:22This is an amazing representation of exactly what my designs are all about.
31:28Congratulations. I really love this. The structure, the style.
31:33This is truly couture worthy and you really did elevate denim to new heights. And I couldn't even tell it was denim.
31:40This was a great piece. I think it really shows who you are as a designer. My only critique was the neckline at the back. It did feel a bit loose. I would just tighten that up.
31:50The hat looks good. A lot of times people ruin their looks. It's like that one accessory, you know, so I thought that was really nice. Nicely done.
31:58Thank you, Curtis. Great job.
32:01And now let's see one of our least favorite looks of the night.
32:07The bottom.
32:09Foster, you brought flowers to the denim challenge.
32:12High fashion to me is simplicity and also timelessness.
32:15Timelessness. And I wanted to show the delicate side of denim by using a floral motif.
32:23I always appreciate the charm of a great applique, but I didn't understand why you decided to go for an unfinished hem.
32:32The top seems very like sophisticated, so detailed. And then at the bottom, that's an undone edge.
32:38I think it's just too many ideas in one dress.
32:41The biggest issue would be the fit. I just don't think it was flattering.
32:43Thank you, Foster.
32:46I don't know. I love his piece.
32:48Let's bring out another one of our favorite looks.
32:56Maya, you gave us a new romantic moment. Walk us through it.
33:00The Canadian tuxedo, to me, comes from that history of Canadian frontier and people needing really strong, durable materials to be able to survive.
33:07I wanted to bring that to the elevation of night out. I want that jacket. I want the look. Let's put it on my body now.
33:16The jacket was really nice. I like the cusset. It is a nice way to bring softness into denim.
33:21My only critique is I don't think the bag was necessary. Did you make the bag?
33:26No, I did not make the bag.
33:28Sometimes when you design, you just kind of have to edit.
33:31The bag, to me, gave this outfit another level of story. I think that's one of the biggest compliments an outfit can get.
33:39Thanks, Maya. This next look was one of our least favorites.
33:50Oh, no.
33:53Namo, you kept this look pretty simple.
33:57It's an expression of myself, which is simplicity and elegance. And I also like flowy things.
34:02I just really felt that you weren't pushing it enough. What's new here? This is a look that I've seen a gazillion times.
34:12I'm all for a simple dress. But when you do simple, it has to be perfect. And this was not. The corset isn't as impeccable as some of your peers.
34:20Yeah, initially when I saw the look, it felt really safe. I didn't really feel like you came through in this dress. I would have loved to see a bit more risk taking.
34:29You are subtle. You are quiet. So maybe this is you.
34:33Like I do do more couture, detailed work.
34:37Give me that, Namo.
34:39Thank you, Namo.
34:42And our final favorite look of the night.
34:47Yay!
34:48Leland, tell us how you brought so many elements together here.
34:53So one thing I really wanted to do was incorporate the like light acid wash and really go for a fashion moment here.
35:00It made me giddy. I felt this was the Britney Spears Mad Max moment.
35:06That deconstructive sort of cape. It looked quite gorgeous.
35:10When I saw it come down the runway, I noticed the shoes and I was like, whoa, this is like a whole look. So for a first impression, I'm really excited to see what we have in store.
35:16Well, it's a wow and no question. The corset is perfection.
35:22One critique I would have is I think the pants are a little over ruched, but it's hard to do messy. And I think you've done a really good job.
35:29Thank you, Leland.
35:32And our final lowest score.
35:36But she's a 10.
35:38She is a 10.
35:40Hi.
35:41So Naomi, patchwork and a beliru. Interesting combo. Let's walk through it.
35:47I prototyped multiple things and I wasted hours. And when I finally decided what I wanted to do, I didn't quite have the time to execute it the way I'd like to.
35:57To me, I see two different personalities here. I think the little bolero jacket shows some promise. The dress is where you fall short. I think this was maybe overly ambitious. And right now, I don't really know who you are as a designer.
36:09I think it just seemed a bit confusing. Maybe you have to develop your voice a bit more.
36:15I like the bolero. I thought that worked. A lot of the rest of the dress really fell apart, especially, you know, from the hip down. It just looked like a mess.
36:24The bottom part, it just didn't go with the top. And you got to give me that storytelling.
36:31Thank you, Naomi.
36:32Thank you so much.
36:35Thank you, designers. You've given us a lot to think about. It's time for some tough decisions. You can leave the runway.
36:42You can leave the runway.
36:51Hello.
36:53Hi.
36:55Hi.
36:57Okay, judges, our top three, Leland, Curtis, and Maya. Who do we think should win?
37:04They're all so good and so promising.
37:06Leland, it was really nice. I mean, the jacket, cape situation, I mean, that's really impeccably made.
37:11And the corset, very clean. Leland was impressive.
37:14Just the sheer amount of things that Leland pumped out, you can really see that he put everything on the table.
37:20Three different pieces that could live on their own, but they actually danced cohesively together.
37:26Maya, I loved this look. There was so much compelling storytelling.
37:31Loved it. I really understood the world that she was creating.
37:34I knew the character. Like, she really delivered in terms of putting an outfit that worked for the model. There's a point of view.
37:43But there's a point of view with Curtis as well. That was a shape that I kind of thought was fantastic.
37:47I mean, the silhouette, the craftsmanship.
37:49Stunning.
37:50Really well executed. Details were amazing.
37:52The little hat, it was meticulous and obviously crafted by someone who really knows what they're doing.
37:59Okay, I think we have our winner. Now, who do we think should be going home?
38:03Naimo, Foster, or Naomi?
38:06Let's start with Naimo.
38:08It really just looked like a black dress. I didn't feel like there was a sense of innovation.
38:13I mean, if you're going to give me a black dress, it better be impeccable.
38:16Yeah.
38:17And it was not. It was messy.
38:18She's just the one that just seems to fall to the back. And I know it's not about attitude, but there is something about attitude.
38:25Well, there is.
38:26And you can see the attitude in Naomi's clothing.
38:29I like the bolero. I thought it was kind of cute.
38:31Yeah, the bolero was the best part of the dress.
38:33The best part.
38:35It's really a question of a lack of design sophistication. I think that's Naomi's problem.
38:42And I do think Foster already has that design sophistication.
38:46But, you know, like, that dress was terrible. It didn't fit. The flowers look very crafty, but not in a good way.
38:52In a good way.
38:53I don't know who he is as a designer looking at that dress.
38:55Yeah.
38:56But I want to see a little bit more.
38:57The raw hem, I would have loved to see it, you know, cleaned. Maybe a bit of a blind hem or...
39:02Blind hem wasn't going to help that dress, let's face it.
39:04It looks like we made our decision.
39:07Curtis, Maya, and Leland.
39:20You've established yourselves as the ones you watch in this competition.
39:24But, there can only be one winner. The winning designer is... Leland.
39:37Hey!
39:38Hey!
39:39Oh!
39:40He's done. It's a poppin'.
39:41Yeah!
39:42Yay!
39:43Yay!
39:45I can't believe I won.
39:47Like, what?
39:48I'm happy that I really showcased myself and, like, my art.
39:51So good.
39:52Good.
39:54Oh, my God.
39:55That means, Curtis and Maya, you are also in. The three of you can leave the runway.
39:59Thank you all.
40:00Congratulations.
40:03We have a winner.
40:04Yay!
40:05That's so good.
40:06I'm so proud of you, honey.
40:07I told you.
40:08Namo, Foster, and Naomi, unfortunately, one of you will be out.
40:25Foster, you are in. You can leave the runway.
40:31Thank you so much.
40:37It all comes down to this.
40:44Naomi, you're all denim distressed us, and not in the right way.
40:51I'm sorry, but you are out.
40:54Oh.
40:57No, you deserve this.
40:59Namo, you're still in.
41:01You can leave the runway.
41:03I'm just honestly glad to be here.
41:05I met amazing people.
41:06I'm very motivated, and I know I have a very bright future ahead of me.
41:10I agree.
41:11You're gonna kill it.
41:12Thanks, guys.
41:13I love it.
41:16We'll kill it.
41:18Take care.
41:19Bye.
41:20Wait, let me hit my pose.
41:21Yes, go, queen.
41:22Love.
41:23Mm.
41:24Uh-oh.
41:25Here's she coming.
41:26It was so lovely to be amongst all of you.
41:30This experience would not have been the same without you.
41:32Hi, guys.
41:33Aurora.
41:34I'm really proud of you.
41:38You have a lot of creativity.
41:40You have a lot of courage.
41:41Can I get a hug?
41:42Yes.
41:43Can we get a group hug?
41:44Yes.
41:45I think I've grown way more than I expected to grow.
41:49This experience was overwhelming, and I let my mind get the best of me.
41:55But this is just the beginning for me.
41:57Maybe I'll be back.
41:58Next time on Project Runway Canada.
41:59I'm pairing you up with content creators for your very first real client challenge.
42:11Oh, my God.
42:12It's a client challenge.
42:13This week is about showing them what we got.
42:16Oh.
42:17I want to see lots of glamour tomorrow.
42:19At the end of the day, it's about keeping the client happy.
42:23I'm just, like, not seeing the vision here yet.
42:27The white face?
42:28It looks like something my mom would wear.
42:30So what are we going to do?
42:31We need a plan.
42:32I need to think.
42:33Let me think.
