00:00240SX and we agreed that next year at the banquet we're going to auction off that painting.
00:05It's a 240Z.
00:06Did I say SX?
00:07That's for you drifters out there.
00:09Welcome to Sam's Garage presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
00:30This week on Sam's Garage, we're back on the road for The Great Race.
00:48Where 135 vintage machines, student drivers, and a few questionable navigators try to stay on time, sort of.
00:57Then we check out some killer classics rocking fresh tires and even fresher stories.
01:05Before heading to Southfield Classics to see what it takes to wire a high voltage hot rod.
01:11And finally, we wrap up with the electric future of horsepower.
01:15Silent burnouts, old school style, and zero gas fumes.
01:20We have 135 plus cars in The Great Race.
01:29Checkpoints along the way that they don't know in advance.
01:32And so the goal is you're going to stay on target.
01:35From start to finish, it's like family to me.
01:37Keeping it maintained, keeping it running hard, it's a complete family member.
01:41It's an experience.
01:42All the workers, all the towns that have been welcoming us.
01:45Winning an ace in The Great Race is just, it's one of the things that just lifts you up.
01:49Were we on time and everybody else was wrong?
01:51Were they on time and we were wrong?
01:53I guess we'll find out tonight.
01:55When vintage iron meets modern rubber, things get interesting.
02:01We meet the teams stacking aces, swapping stories, and showing that a good set of white walls can still win races and hearts on Route 66.
02:16Turning left or right?
02:17Turning left.
02:18Got it.
02:21Sudden stop.
02:22Sudden stop.
02:23I'm going to hold you.
02:27On my mark, we will go.
02:31Mark.
02:33What speed?
02:3445.
02:39Now we're going to hit Turner Ridge.
02:42I got involved in The Great Race very seriously when Cokie Coker bought The Great Race out of bankruptcy.
02:49And the phone rang one morning and it's Corkie on the phone and he says, Dave, I need you to join the circus.
02:55I need a chief technical inspector to inspect the cars before the race.
03:01And I said, sure, Corkie, that sounds like a great adventure. Let's do it.
03:07Then something even bigger happened.
03:09I heard because I'm working for The Great Race that Ted Stahl spun a rod bearing.
03:14And I said, well, you tell a message to Ted Stahl to get him in the pits tonight so I can have him on the road tomorrow.
03:22Because he's bought me dinner twice and I like him.
03:26They had put it on the trailer and given up.
03:28I saw them later that night and I said, I'm ready to get you on the road tomorrow.
03:32And they said, no, can't be done.
03:34And they want to know, how are you going to get my car with a spun rod bearing back in The Great Race by morning?
03:42And I told them, well, you know, Ted, think of it this way.
03:46If you're stuck on the moon and your auburn is the only way back to Earth with a spun rod bearing, are you just going to give up?
03:53No.
03:54We're going to pull the head off.
03:56We're going to drop the pan.
03:57We're going to pull the rod with the spun bearing and the piston out.
04:00We're going to take out the push rods or the lifters so that the valves don't open and close.
04:05And we'll put the head back on and the pan back on with a little glue.
04:09And we'll build a seven cylinder out of your straight eight and you'll make it to the end of the race.
04:14You might have a little misfire.
04:19The ceremonial head was created by Jimbo Jefferyon, one of our members who's a potter.
04:24And I rub it on the way in and out every time I get on the bus.
04:28Well, these couches have a lot of meaning.
04:30The brown couches were part of my family room for many years.
04:35That recliner that Bam is sitting in is the favorite chair of our Uncle Bob.
04:41And when he passed away, we took the chair on so that it would remind us of him every time we ride.
04:48This is our storage area.
04:50This is all the flags and the gear and the snacks.
04:54Way in the back, this is the kitchenette that allows us to register as an RV.
04:59So technically we are an RV, meaning that anyone can drive it.
05:04We don't have to have a commercial driver's license.
05:08He's a legend.
05:09I'd do one mile just to say I did that.
05:12Absolutely.
05:13That's our jam right there.
05:15That's the kind of cars we like.
05:16It's been four years since we did this last time.
05:19Four years.
05:20Seems like yesterday he drove that 40 Moonshine car all the way in to Mooresville.
05:26And you're going to do it again today.
05:28Yes, sir.
05:29We could be on Route 66 in a moonshine car from North Carolina from 1940.
05:35That would be something.
05:36Route 66 is next year or so.
05:40Sam's Garage is presented by NHOU.
05:45Brought to you by the following companies.
05:56Welcome back to Sam's Garage presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
06:21When vintage iron meets modern rubber, things get interesting.
06:27We meet the teams stacking aces, swapping stories, and showing that a good set of white walls can still win races and hearts on Route 66.
06:36You know, on a big door, it's hard to open.
06:40You just pull the blind door and it rolls up out of your way and tie it off under a handle and you're good to go.
06:46If you're a hobbyist or a professional, you should have one of these.
06:52So every year we finish our race, we tell ourselves we've got to be more prepared next year.
06:57We've got to be more prepared.
06:58We're going to get the car ready by January.
07:01We're going to get out there and get all of our practice runs in.
07:03So we did exactly not that this year.
07:05We loaded our car on the trailer right before we went off to the spring rally.
07:09First time we were in it was when we were on the clock for the spring rally.
07:12So we do everything perfectly correct exactly how you're supposed to and ignore all of it till the last second.
07:21They are sponsored by Coker Tire, the new Coker Classic Star Series.
07:26The all new white wall tire with best in class features available in 28 sizes.
07:31These boys have been doing this for a long time.
07:33We're glad they're here.
07:35Cool car.
07:36That one nice and slick.
07:37We barely got the Star Series on that car for last year's race.
07:41I mean, it was shipping, just shipping, just in time.
07:44We put them on at the race.
07:45It does have, by the way, doesn't it?
07:48Have our new secret tire on it?
07:50I've been in the sport for a very long time.
07:53Met a lot of people in racing.
07:55And one of the guys I've met in racing over the years was Jeff Stump,
07:59who is one of the guys that runs the great race.
08:04For Jeff, I would do just about anything.
08:06So he said, would you please help us promote the great race for the following year?
08:13That was in 2021.
08:15So what we did is we agreed.
08:17We built that car that's behind you, the spirit of mood.
08:20It's a 40 Ford like you would have had back in the 40s as a souped up flathead Ford engine.
08:27And with dual carburetors, aluminum broker crank.
08:31When they were brand new from the factory, they made 85 horsepower.
08:35This one makes about 220.
08:37So what we have is a fun ride that you can participate in with in rally.
08:44And it's fun to get out and see if it saves some of the people.
08:47And to do some things where I think one of the greatest little events that they have all year long.
08:53People should never miss it when it comes to town.
08:56There are so many wonderful cars we see.
08:59And so many really, really nice people to meet.
09:17So we'll be right back to the city of London.
09:30And I'll see you next time.
09:40we had a wonderful trip. We do appreciate it. Keep following us. Keep watching what's going on.
09:52Get a chance. Come to the great race. See everything that's going on. And if you can
09:56participate, do it. We also got an ace today. Yeah. It was the last leg. We finally got our ace.
10:02It was a long time coming, but we finally did it. We did. We did. Who got the ace? Was it
10:08your leg or my leg on this one? Well, I think I, it was you, Sam. Thank you. It was you.
10:13Doug's done a great job. You guys, the great race is awesome. Next year, we're going to be doing it
10:17from Springfield, Illinois, all the way down to Pasadena, Route 66. It's 100th year anniversary.
10:22You guys got to check this out. We'll see you in Springfield.
10:25If you guys are working in the shop, you already have a mess with all the projects that are undone
10:40in the shop. The last thing you want to do is have a chop saw making more of a mess, right?
10:44That's right.
10:45They got dust everywhere. They shoot flames everywhere. You got to use eye protection.
10:49Metal shavings all over.
10:51Yep. So what I like to use is the hem saw. What we have here is a four and three quarter
10:56inch saw. This one right here works as an upright as well. These go in reverse rotation,
11:01making it a nice straight cleaner cut and the blade lasts much longer. When you go to tighten
11:06your blade, it's got a clutch, so it won't allow you to over tighten that blade. And both
11:11saws are designed with variable speed motors. What do you think?
11:16Very nice saws. I like the thickness of the blade. I like the adjustability and I really
11:20like having a saw that has the feature where it feeds down through the material as opposed
11:25to having to move the material through. Very nice feature. I like this saw a lot.
11:29And this particular saw and this saw on this side both have a 60 degree miter on them.
11:34Really nice. Very nice.
11:35So you can move it right there on the table.
11:36I could use one of these in my shop.
11:38So if you guys are one of those hobbyists at home or you have a real shop, go check out
11:42Hemsaw. They're the last saw made right here in America.
11:44Welcome back to more Sam's Garage presented by NHOU.
12:01At Southfield Classics, it's all about clean looms and zero smoke tests.
12:06Noah and Jesus show how precision wiring keeps high voltage trucks humming because melted
12:13wires are so last season.
12:14Jesus, we have him doing a little bit of the low voltage wiring and a lot of what the wiring
12:23that we do here currently is all just to ensure that the pin outs, the connectors or everything
12:29are done in the procedure and the manner that we don't want any binding or twisting. We want
12:33the pins and everything to slide in easily and they get connected in simply toward not having
12:39any kind of things later on down the road, untwisting, coming apart or any of that stuff because it's
12:44very important. A lot of the low voltage stuff, you know, it's very much a communicative thing
12:49amongst other stuff. I mean, luckily for this system here, it actually will tell us if something
12:54is wrong. So for all the little things that we have sitting here, it does have an OBD scanner
12:59and something that actually tells you and shoots you, you know, and check engine lights and stuff like
13:03that and let you know that something is incorrect. It'll, it'll probably go into a limp mode most
13:08likely to where you can get it somewhere. It's where you can get it looked at and looked over
13:11and make sure that everything is pinned out and done correctly. So a lot of things that we have
13:15here and what we're doing here is just to ensure that quality, to be sure that we don't have any of
13:20those issues coming around or people being afraid of certain things, right? With all this wiring that
13:26we put in currently just from the last take we did, you know, we loom everything up. We ensure that
13:31everything is still safe and working properly. We do a little test runs on every single one of these
13:37vehicles. But not only that, we are, you know, obviously we'll go back, check wires, make sure
13:41that nothing is, you know, missing or any of that stuff. And we properly try to route everything to
13:47where it's away from other things that could possibly, you know, pull it or, or even just, you know, rip the wire.
13:53So here inside the cab, uh, we like to put a lot of the 12 volt components inside the cab, you know,
14:01to kind of secure it, obviously keep it away from the water and all that other stuff that could possibly,
14:07you know, damage it just like any other car, right? So what we have come up with is these panels that we
14:11have in the back that hold, um, all of our 12 volt systems and connections that we have. And so, you know,
14:17there's, there's the 12 volt harness from which we have wrapped up in here very carefully for the
14:24dash components that we put in, which is the gauges, the throttle pedal, which technically is a little
14:30different. It's more like a go pedal, I guess you can call it. Um, your brake switches and all those
14:35little tiny things that you would have in a normal car, you know, some of those, um, sensors still do
14:40the same thing, just like another car, you know, they help, they help communicate to the car to ensure that
14:45is capable of actually going forward or backwards depending on what you're doing. A lot of the way
14:50we, uh, situate the way it's all orientated, all underneath the dash is all on, you know, component
14:57layouts like we do on these, on these aluminum plates that we have. We have them all situated in
15:03place. We bolt them up in place and then we, we wire them in place and pretty much make it to where it's,
15:09uh, it's a bolt-on process for us to where it's easily serviceable. Everything's, uh, reachable,
15:15you can get to it. Uh, nothing, nothing is a big headache to do, I guess.
15:25So a lot of the wiring that we have done so far consists of all the 12-volt stuff, right? So,
15:31um, what we have here currently, what we're doing here is also for the fans,
15:34the heater, the communications for the battery packs. And that pretty much summarizes a lot of
15:40what, what is done for this vehicle, right? It needs communication for it to operate correctly
15:45and it needs to know that it's operating correctly. So, um, once all these are tidied in and then we,
15:50we get our 12-volt harness connections put in place, we're ready to ride.

16:20Sam's Garage is brought to you by the following companies.
16:32Welcome back to Sam's Garage presented by NHOU.
16:45This season we showed you everything about Southfield Classics, the ins and outs, and their SC31T along
17:07with the GT that they're building, and what is entailed in some of these high-voltage vehicles.
17:12And they're not your standard EV. No, absolutely not. These are high-performance vehicles. They're
17:17built like a hot rod or a street rod, so they're not going to be your standard $30,000 Tesla.
17:24It just doesn't work that way. And the standard EV, for some reason,
17:26there's some sort of government mandate that says they have to be ugly. You don't want to own it.
17:30You're embarrassed driving it. They're heavy. And because they're heavy, they kill tires. You got a lot
17:34of road noise. You got a lot of issues with them that you do not have with any of these Southfield
17:39Classics vehicles because these vehicles are hot rods. They're just powered differently. This is
17:45the most iconic Chevy truck that you can purchase out there. The five-window 49 to 53 truck is like
17:50the Tri-5 Chevy. Yeah. It never gets old. It never gets old in the style, quality, and everything else.
17:56The drivetrain is basically all hot rod stuff. The only thing that we've changed is the actual power
18:00plant. What supplies the power to the rear wheels? The only thing that you're losing is the sound.
18:06And for some people, you know, they don't want the sound. The older you get, the less you can hear.
18:10That is so true, right? And let's face it, guys. Most of us gearheads, we're gearheads from when
18:15we were kids. And it started with little cars that we pushed back and moved forward. They're usually
18:19electric-powered cars or a remote-controlled car in the 80s, like myself. And this truck, I took the
18:25green one, which is the test mule for the weekend, and I had so much fun driving it because it's just a
18:29different sensation. To do a silent burnout, it's just crazy. You're sitting there, you hit the gas next thing,
18:34you know you're going sideways. I'm like, man, that is so cool. And the sound that you get takes you
18:38right back to being that kid again that got you in love with what we do anyways. So if you're a real
18:43gearhead, you don't want to hate on these vehicles. You want to find out about them. Look, we're not
18:47trying to change history. We're just trying to move forward or move history forward. So let's say I
18:52want to build one of these iconic Chevy pickup trucks. I take my gray one that you guys all know has a
18:58Hemi in it. And I go to someone like Dan. He's a car restorer. Well, all he did was take an old
19:03school truck, make it look pretty, put the new stuff on it, and give it back to me. So it's going
19:07to still drive like an old truck. It's going to sound like an old truck. I'm going to hear the body
19:11panels. It's going to rattle and shake going down the road. Not the Southfield Classic vehicles.
19:17When they're building their chassis, they go in there and reinforce everything that could be
19:20reinforced. They make it a new solid vehicle so that when you're driving an electric vehicle,
19:24you're going down the road and you hear nothing, you're still going to hear nothing from the cab of
19:28the truck. And that's what makes it so awesome. So our intent was is to bring everything that's
19:33modern technology, modern styling, modern smoothness, and build it into an old truck. So we had to take
19:39a lot of the bad out of it. So when you're driving this 50s truck, it still rides and feels like a 50s
19:45truck, but it's totally silent. And it's totally like driving a brand new car, like a brand new Mercedes or
19:51whatever. So that's what we're trying to do is getting that. It's kind of a mix of feels, mix of that old
19:55school style and the new car feel. So let's not hate on it. Let's educate each other. Let's go to the shows.
20:00Let's find out what's going on with these vehicles. It is going to be the future. Let's start accepting
20:04it now. Go to the internet, check out Southfield Classics, look through the website, and really
20:09educate yourself. Let's not hate. Let's embrace them like the gas cars that they are. That's right. And I tell
20:13everybody, if you see me out, you see me in one of the trucks, just come up and talk, man. I talk to
20:17everybody. I'll talk to anybody. If you're interested in it, I'll definitely fill you in.
20:21Yep. So next season, 2026, we're going to be finishing up this white vehicle that we started
20:25this year. We're going to go on. We're going to show you the GT. We're going to show you the six
20:28pack truck. We're going to show you that 51 Suburban. So make sure that you guys stay tuned.
20:32Keep up with Southfield Classics and Sam's Garage so you guys get better educated and love these
20:36high voltage vehicles as much as I do.
20:51From great race grit to high voltage builds, we've seen the future, met the past and somehow
20:57not short out. Silent or screaming, gas or electrons, if it's got wheels, Sam's Garage will make it roll.
21:05It's
