07:38It's scary, jump scares, big laughs, it's everything you want.
07:44How did this, it's kind of amazing that no one's done this before, an Anaconda reboot.
07:49How did this come about? How involved were either of you?
07:52Well, there was, the director of this movie made a movie before this called The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,
07:59which was with Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal, and both Jack and I were huge fans of that movie.
08:04And when this script kind of showed up, it seemed to have similar DNA to that one,
08:10in that it was just kind of a clever meta-comedy, a take on a reboot.
08:15So, I think I kind of worked on it a little bit with them, developing it.
08:19And I was interested in doing it, I was very excited that they would want to work with me,
08:25and then I heard that Jack was maybe going to be involved, and then it was just the most exciting day.
08:31And then we got on the phone and talked about it.
08:33And it's basically, it's two friends kind of coming together later in life.
08:38Yeah. Yeah. Four friends.
08:40Four, you're right.
08:41Steve Zahn and Tandway Newton.
08:43And yeah, we're these four dumbbells who love each other and had great experiences in high school,
08:49making little dumb films, and we shared a love of the original Anaconda.
08:53And we decided to go remake this movie out in the jungle, and then we get swept up in an actual Anaconda nightmare.
09:00But it's really funny and crazy. I never read anything like it.
09:05And I was mainly excited to work with this guy right here, because he makes me laugh so hard until I cry.
09:10And I thought, this is it. And I told my manager, I was like, I'll do it as long as Paul Rudd is, in fact, attached.
09:18Because sometimes they'll pull a fast one, they'll pull a switcheroo.
09:21Tennessee switcheroo.
09:22Paul Rudd's in it. And then you say, okay, I signed the thing. And then they say, oh, Paul couldn't do it, he had to do it. No!
09:28So now, it's supposed to be set in South America, but you filmed in Australia, was it?
09:33Yeah.
09:34Yeah. Yeah. Apparently, that wasn't our decision, but we had a great experience in Australia, pretending to be in Brazil, in the rainforest.
09:44Yeah. The Gold Coast.
09:47Nice.
09:48And you were in real swamps.
09:51Yeah, there was, the first day, the first day of shooting, for me, was, I don't know, it was a night shoot, and we were in a swamp.
09:59Selton Mello and I were in a swamp, up to our chest, and it was terrifying.
10:03It was really, and they were trying to put us at ease, and they said, we had guys come out, and they cleared out the swamp yesterday.
10:10Like, you can clear out a swamp.
10:12You were in there, and I said, you know there's things swimming around, and even some of the crew said, I can't believe you're going in there.
10:19I'm going to jump in here. There was someone on the crew who had a creepy crawly stuck to their leg, and you saved them.
10:25I didn't, uh, I, it was a beetle. And you knew what to do, you were like .
10:31It was a beetle with a horn on it. It was a beetle that had a horn on it.
10:45Yes, only found in the Australian airbag. But then, this is weird.
10:49It was a nuts off if you're not careful.
10:51No, it was a nut-biting beetle.
10:54Because, Michelle, you know, before you got into comedy, we'll talk about this later, you were a model.
11:00Yeah. And didn't you have a beetle thing?
11:02Yeah, yeah. Because they would just get you to do, like, random things in modelling, where they were just sort of like, you're lucky to be here.
11:08We're going to do this shoot now, and this is editorial, it's high fashion, so we're going to put these beetles on your face.
11:14Stay very still, and look gorgeous.
11:17Try and look nice. But if you've got a beetle on your face, you're like .
11:23Yeah, there's a lot of stuff like that. And then I did another shoot where they wanted me to sit on, like, a bit of wood.
11:33And as I sat down on it, it was in Texas, and I was like, oh, there's all these ants crawling on me.
11:38But obviously, from England, I didn't realise there's ants that bite.
11:41Do you know what I mean? Yeah. What's the worst that can happen to you in this country?
11:45Pigeon shits on you or something.
11:46And I was like, they're burning. They're burning. They're like, oh, it's a fire ants nest.
11:51And I was like, I should probably get up. And they were like, it's the last shot.
11:54If you could just stay there. And look gorgeous. And they're like, yeah!
11:59Yeah, fun times, fun times. I don't know why you gave it up.
12:04Jessie Buckley, you grew up in the Irish countryside, so are you good with animals?
12:08Um, I feel like, out of respect, they, you know, I should leave them alone.
12:15OK. Not because I would do anything to them, but they might do something to me,
12:19because they're animals. That is true. Well observed.
12:25But have you ever, have you had a bad experience or something?
12:27Well, actually, my mom grew up in a bull farm.
12:30What? Yeah. And she had like their...
12:33Can I just say, that seems problematic.
12:36Why?
12:38Well, you need more than bulls on your bulls.
12:40Oh, but there are no pedigree bulls. I don't know.
12:43I don't know. It's like a gay cow bar or something.
12:45It's like a... You love it, Chris!
12:49Only bulls? I don't... I don't know.
12:55But they just bred bulls? Yeah, they were like prize bulls.
12:59So they'd bring them to shows and kind of wash them and brush their hair
13:03and show them around. He is a gay cow bar. Yeah!
13:09But I remember once my grandfather brought me out into the fields
13:14and put me on his tractor and I had never really been around a load of bulls.
13:19Like a mass... Good.
13:21Good of...
13:22And he went to open the gate and close it and there was a load of hay on the back of the tractor.
13:28And he... All of a sudden, this like... It felt like...
13:32Like a hundred bulls were running towards me.
13:36And since that moment, I just think, you know, out of respect.
13:40I don't need to wrangle...
13:43Leave them alone. Anything, really. I leave them alone.
13:45Alone. Wise, wise.
13:47And Paul Rudd, what is the connection to Ireland, that you love Ireland so much?
13:51I just think it's the greatest place. I just love Ireland.
13:54I first went there on my own. I loved Irish music and I was just very drawn to Ireland.
13:58Okay.
13:59And then my father spent a lot of time in Ireland because he was a Titanic expert
14:03and he used to take groups of people throughout Ireland to Belfast to Harlan Wolfe
14:07where the ship was built and he'd go down to Cove, which was the last port of call.
14:11Yeah.
14:12Yeah, so we spent a lot of time in Ireland. Yeah.
14:14Was that his job?
14:16Yeah. Yeah.
14:17Wow.
14:18That's very niche.
14:19Yeah, it is. It really is.
14:22It really is.
14:23He used to work with the airlines and was a big history buff. He loved history.
14:28But he was a real Titanic enthusiast and that was...
14:33He started kind of giving these Titanic historical tours to other people who were as interested in Titanic as he was.
14:40And late in his life, that was what he did.

14:44And is Rod an Irish name?
14:45I think there's other Rod sausages.

14:49I never had a Rod sausage.

17:39And Hamlet is this incredibly beloved novel by Maggie O'Farrell.
17:43When they approached you, were you familiar with the book?
17:46No, no.
17:47I met Chloe Zhao first and then they sent me the book.
17:51Yeah.
17:52And for people who haven't read the book, and lots of people have,
17:54tell us about Hamlet and kind of its relation to Shakespeare
17:58and sort of, you know, why it's so special.
18:00I guess it's a peek behind the curtain of who the family man,
18:03Shakespeare, William Shakespeare might have been
18:06and where Hamlet might have kind of been born from,
18:12which was, Shakespeare actually did have a son called Hamlet
18:15who died of the plague.
18:16I had no idea about that.
18:18I thought it was about a Danish prince.
18:20Yeah.
18:21Um, and it's about love and loss and motherhood and, uh, art
18:29and the need of kind of storytelling to hold the parts of us
18:32that we can't hold by ourselves.
18:34Um, that's it really.
18:35And it is, it's such a beautiful film and you are, God, you're good in it.
18:38And, uh, Paul Mesco, we should say, plays, uh, William Shakespeare.
18:41And the Hamlet, Hamlet thing, those names, am I right,
18:46they were interchangeable at the time?

18:49And the same, and you're Anne Hathaway, but you're Agnes.
18:52Well, she was kind of written out of history as, you know,
18:56and I think her father called her Agnes, but she was known as Anne Hathaway

20:30They were so giddy all day because they've been rehearsing it for like the week and

20:46Like she's like my emo teenager in that I'm kind of proud that she's like, oh my god
20:55But it was such a gorgeous shoot and those kids are incredible and Paul is promising
21:07If you go to see this film be prepared it will put you through the emotional ringer
21:12there's a
21:14Long section at the end where you're what Agnes and halfway is watching Hamlet this display that will be and there's a moment right at the end
21:22That I you and Chloe the director you came up with together. Do you know what I'm talking about the the hands? Yeah
21:30Yeah, I mean the end we didn't know what to do
21:34It's quite scary because it was like the whole end of shooting the whole film and we'd had this amazing journey
21:39We're like god. We've got to like land the plane now
21:42How do you like land the plane after this and go to the globe which is epic in just its name?
21:49and
21:51There was the moment at the I mean there was these incredible extras 400 extras
21:56And then there was a moment where I was standing in the middle of the of our recreated globe and there was all these
22:02incredible faces around me and
22:04And I sent Chloe Max Richter's on the nature of daylight and from that piece of music
22:13This ending came where they all
22:17Reach 400 people behind me reach their hands to try and touch the play and I guess touch the things that they've lost in their own life
22:26Yeah in some way
22:27That's a really beautiful moment and this wonderful things happen to you. You're now a mom. You became a mom after the film. Congratulations
22:40Does that kind of when you watch the film now as a mom does it kind of make it even more kind of emotionally upsetting for you
22:48Or is it kind of the same?

22:53Watched it first when I was eight months pregnant and I was not okay
23:01You know embarrassing to cry at your own film, but I was pregnant so I'm
23:06But it felt it was you know, it's about a lot. It's got a lot of birth and death and
23:12motherhood and children and
23:14I wanted to be a mom for a long time and I got pregnant like a week after I wrapped
23:20This film so it was pretty yeah, it's beautiful. Well, it's lovely that those things are all kind of entwined now
23:27Yeah, talking of Hamlet Shakespeare Paul Rudd you've played Hamlet, haven't you I?
23:33Did in a scene. Oh, okay. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I did it. You were really good in it. Yeah
23:39I cried when I did it

23:45Production of it, but it was very posh wasn't it? It was pretty pot. Yeah. Yeah. Well, it was
23:50It wasn't that posh. It wasn't directed by somebody very famous

24:04Another one that I did a I was going to school I did a production of Hamlet
24:09I was working on a scene Ben King Sir Ben Kingsley came to do it. Don't forget the sir
24:13No, sir Ben Kingsley came to do a like a master class and
24:19He directed it. We worked on it
24:21and it was just for an afternoon really and
24:24and when I was starting my career
24:27I had a manager
24:29Bit of a Broadway Danny Rose type manager who said we need to create a CV for you
24:35And he was and I had no credits and he said well, what did you do in school? And I was in this I know I did a thing with Hamlet
24:42Then Sir Ben Kingsley came in and directed it and so he put down
24:47I played Hamlet in a production
24:50Directed by Sir Ben Kingsley
24:52Looks good on a resume
24:54He sounds brilliant

24:57And I was I felt very funny about it
25:01But those that seemed to kind of hang around and my biggest fear in life was that sir

33:28So, yeah, I've done a lot of different jobs before I started modelling, but my first job was a cleaner in an office building, and my mum was like, right, I'm going to do this day, you do the other days, right?
33:41And my mum, she's a changed woman now, but my mum really got a kick out of nicking.
33:46And we were in this corporate, in this, like, corporate office building, and my mum would send me in.
33:53I think I was pretty young, like 13, 14 at the time, this was my first job, and she'd be like, right, alright, so when you do the second floor, if you go into the kitchen, they've got a really good dinner set.
34:03Now, I've got the cups, and you've got to get the plates, okay, that is your job, you've got to nick the plates.
34:09And I was just like, I was such a, you know, like, an anxious kid, I'd like be freaking out, it was like I was doing a heist in the loop, you know what I mean?
34:17I've got to nick these plates, my mum, so we can have the full set, which is weird, because she doesn't cook, so it's sort of like, what are they here for?
34:25Yeah. Did you just have them on display?
34:27Well, no, no, I don't know, you know, but we did get the full set, so.

34:35And talking of early job things, Jack, you got into acting really early.

35:30And my stepfather, David Katz, actually drove me around town to go on the auditions.
35:36And I went, I remember that audition like it was yesterday.
35:39I went in there and I did the lines and they said, could you do it again, Jack?
35:44And this time do it really cocksure, really overconfident.
35:48And I was like, I think I can do that.
35:49And in my mind, I was like, they fell into my trap.
35:52My main move is overconfident guy.
35:55So I did it again and I just poured on all the sauce.
35:59And I was like, just last night, I was lost in the jungle with pitfall Harry, surrounded by giant scorpions and cobra rattlers and man-eating crocodiles.
