00:00jewelry sets i've got this super tiny crochet needle before their most challenging team knit
00:07yet lace lighting it's not going to be finished lydia secured her second big knitter win it's the
00:14first time i felt something's perfect ailsa fell short there's something missing here
00:23but ultimately simon was the sixth knitter to be cast off
00:27now we've reached the semi-final and only four knitters remain and you're probably wondering
00:35why on earth i look like this well this week it's all about turning rags to riches welcome
00:44to the semi-final of game of war
00:46welcome back game of wool knitters can you believe we've gone from 10 down to just four of you in the
00:59yarn barn well that can mean only one thing it's the semi-final the tension in the yarn barn is like
01:08never before little nit and gag there for you now you might be wondering why you're looking at a
01:12mannequin covered in a bin bag well that's because for this week's group challenge dian sheila would
01:22love for you to refashion old charity shop aaron jumpers into a catwalk worthy dress
01:32yes we would like you to work in two groups of two to reimagine the iconic aaron sweater
01:45in the repurposing use existing scraps from the capperdashery we want to see something that's ready for
01:53the catwalk we will be looking very carefully at execution and finishing how you put the pieces
02:04together how you seam them how you join them and it has to fit the model perfectly well as usual dian
02:11sheila are going to have to leave the yarn barn because this challenge is judge blind so teams in team
02:19one elsa and isaac in team two holger and lydia you have 10 hours to turn your jumpers into a catwalk
02:31worthy dress let's get knitting it's the semi-final and the knitters are kicking it off with the team
02:42knit the catwalk challenge is all about standing out from the crowd and in a team of two there will be
02:48nowhere to hide semi-finals it's very intense the stakes are very very high when you think about
02:55one person is going to go you want to put your best foot forward this week
03:00first knitted over a hundred years ago off the coast of ireland the aaron jumper has become a
03:05modern knitwear hero celebrated for its complex textured stitch patterns rich in symbolic meaning
03:12we've given each team two hand knit charity shop aaron jumpers to utterly reinvent from the cozy to the
03:20couture there we go oh god no the haberdashery has been freshly stocked with offcuts and scraps
03:33available for them to knit into their catwalk pieces oh look at that that's perfect this could be
03:39interesting you only get one chance to impress on the runway so the knitters must showcase
03:46innovative design skills confident garment construction and a perfect fit to create a
03:52high fashion dress all in just 10 hours 10 hours isn't a lot of time it's a different one yeah i'm worried
03:59refashioned charity jumpers what was the inspiration behind this challenge waste is a massive issue when
04:11somebody has knitted a beautiful aaron sweater and it's gone maybe a little bit past its date you can
04:18actually repurpose and make it something incredibly fashionable chic even and that wool garment has got
04:26another life we really want to see the aaron as the star of the show one of these knitters is not going
04:33to make it to our final what could go wrong in this challenge design is going to be huge here we want to see
04:43not just how they join pre-knitted pieces together but we want to see what they're adding in
04:50themselves this will take a certain amount of boldness and bravery we have four really great knitters
04:59now i really want to see that everybody has found their voice and being able to put their design ideas
05:07into this piece any first thoughts isaac yeah i i yeah we could take the sleeves out take the neck off
05:22and just do sort of like a halter net i think both of us really like this color we could just go down
05:27the raglan seams do like an eye cord edge in that same color that was the only thing i had and then
05:34everything from down i'm like miss me i have no ideas what were you thinking of the skirt at the
05:40front it could be like a mini skirt long at the back short at the front like a kind of tinkerbell
05:46type kind of jaggy shapes so her legs are out at the front but then she's got this kind of floaty
05:52thing going on at the back okay okay
05:55ailsa and isaac plan to remove the arms from both jumpers using the bodies to create the top
06:04and bottom panels of their dress isaac will tackle the top and plans to knit a new ribbed halter neck
06:10and crochet a lace corset into the back ailsa will focus on the bottom half creating a tinkerbell
06:17skirt with aaron strips of material and over embroidering extra detailing using a yarn winder they
06:24will unravel purple yarn from haberdashery offcuts to create one cohesive color scheme
06:30ailsa and i have been in a team together before the ability and the talent is so high but i also
06:36think that we're relatively equally matched so it is really just going to come down to the small details
06:42while isaac and ailsa are preserving the original shape of the jumper as a dress holger is ripping up the
06:49rule book it could theoretically take the front piece and make it into a giant sleeve yeah i think
06:55it would be quite nice if we could have these literally start going all the way down but we
07:00i think also you could this could could be set in like a godet massive skirt like you know big sleeve
07:06or something yeah okay yeah i think fitted is important i don't want it just to be like oversized okay
07:13the front and back panels will be transformed into two balloon sleeves and blanket off cuts from the
07:22haberdashery will form the body of their dress the original jumper sleeves will then become the bottom
07:28half of the dress with newly knitted godets inserted triangular panels adding volume and flare
07:35i hope they'll appreciate the creative use of the pieces that we have we're going to divide and conquer
07:40i think it's very clear that holger is a stronger sewer than me and that is totally fine but i am
07:45a faster knitter than holger this looks like a finished dress you've been throwing stuff at it
07:52but whose idea was to put all of these in these places look holger's holger came up with the sleeve
08:00i wanted a fitted item let's not kind of tally who does what here um we're just all doing our best
08:07so what you're trying to say is that it's a collaborative event holger has more of a design
08:11background than me so i'm happy to take more of his lead in terms of initial vision but actually when
08:18it comes to what we finally decide to do i'm not just going to go yes holger sure holger like it's
08:23going to be both of what we decide okay do you have a name for your dress yet no i've got a couple of
08:30ideas oh god yeah i was i was afraid i was gonna come cape blanket oh for god thank sleeve and fry
08:44have you ever made a dress fit for the catwalk before never made a dress before you've made anything
08:48fit for a catwalk oh that's not true this is the mini skirt part ending here and then the back will
08:57be longer where all our wee bits will be trailing i can see on there it looks like some kind of like
09:03peacock yeah business in the front part in the back yeah i like that so you're planning on unwinding
09:09that one then is it it's just a really nice yarn having the sort of unity by using the same color
09:16in multiple places across the whole thing is going to make unraveling these worth it
09:20i don't understand why he's taking he's taking these and unraveling it's like why why um to secure
09:29my spot in final i've got really pull out all the stops now i think i'm onto a winner with this
09:33strand oh here we go i'll cut let's see some winding
09:38okay yes oh this is amazing
09:50how you doing over there plod non how are you just beavering away
10:06lydia is now working on the balloon sleeves carefully picking up live stitches from the
10:11original front of the jumper to create a new tight cuff this piece here was actually the back of the
10:18jumper but managing the stitch pickup matching the tension and ensuring a seamless blend from aaron
10:24jumper into new knit won't be easy you've got this billowy sleeve that's being created by this
10:29piece of ribbing here so i've picked up stitches to pull this in tighter it's gone from that width
10:36to this width
10:40it is so close now i really want to get to the final it's like we've come this far i know i've put
10:46my best foot forward i think winning would give me opportunities whether that be with our yarn
10:53business doing more designing or maybe i'm on the trajectory of alison hammond like that would be
10:59fantastic wouldn't it
11:06you don't know maybe our maybe tom needs a co-host and maybe it's me
11:10knitters you're halfway through five hours to go
11:19at the halfway point knitters should be starting to reassemble their aaron knits into couture catwalk
11:25pieces she's looking like something isn't it
11:27she's looking like something
11:28and that's just very exciting
11:32have you had a look over to the other side
11:34really it's very very different oh that's clever what they've done with the arms yeah that is cool
11:39well i'm liking that traditional adding
11:41I'm now thinking it may be better
11:50Just ditch the strips and the ruffly bits at the back
11:53Because this is centred
11:55And it would be a shame to lose that
11:58Yeah
11:59I don't know
12:00What's your thoughts?
12:02I trust your vision
12:04Yep
12:11It's the semi-final
12:16And the knitters are over halfway through the team challenge
12:19Reinventing the iconic Aran jumper
12:22Into a runway ready star
12:24Holger is carefully sewing the Aran panels
12:28Into the blanket body of their dress
12:30I am attaching the second sleeve
12:33Into the armhole
12:34There's still quite a bit of sewing to do
12:36While on the other team
12:37Isaac has knitted a new purple neckline
12:40Using the off-cut yarn he created earlier
12:42I'm just casting off the ribbed neck
12:45Which I think is looking great
12:46Which is a halter neck
12:48Very nice
12:48With only four knitters left
12:50The judges will be scrutinising individual contributions
12:53In the team knit more than ever
12:55So the halter neck was my idea
12:56And the sort of like skirt and bottom section was Elsa's idea
12:59We've got a good combination between the two of us
13:03Holger is a stronger sewer
13:05But I am a faster knitter
13:06Let's be real
13:07If I wasn't part of the team
13:08There probably wouldn't be a finished garment, right?
13:13Lydia and Holger
13:14Where are we?
13:15Getting there
13:15So you're making another panel?
13:17Yes
13:17And I see you've pulled out the colours
13:19Like this kind of mimics
13:20Yes, yes, yes
13:22Lydia obviously makes up for my slow-ass knitting
13:25By kind of whizzing through
13:27With her clickety-clack of needles there
13:29Behave
13:30Okay
13:31Does go there
13:32Panels flank the main
13:34I see
13:36That's really good
13:37So when you say godet
13:39It's very simple
13:40A godet is a more or less triangular shaped piece
13:43That is inserted into the body of a skirt
13:46To create extra width
13:48Godet
13:49Godet
13:50Godet, mate
13:51Godet
13:51Isaac
13:57Nails
13:58How's it going?
13:59So I'm just doing like a little corset lace thing at the back
14:03It's just an additional feature that we've added on top of the Aaron
14:06Oh, okay
14:07How's the party in the back coming along?
14:11It's a different kind of party
14:12A different kind of party?
14:14It's a more sophisticated party now
14:15Yeah
14:16Oh, okay
14:16Yeah, we had a bit of a chat about the strips and the ruffly bits at the back
14:21And thought we need to get it absolutely perfect or not at all
14:25Do you think it's quite a big risk to change your plan this late in the game?
14:30I know
14:30Feeling nervous or are you feeling confident?
14:34Feeling confident
14:35Yeah
14:36I'm always nervous
14:37Knitters, you have one hour to go
14:43In the final hour, teams must fit their catwalk creations to the live models
14:49Yay, models
14:52Hello
14:52To the sleeves
14:54I mean, it's a dress
14:56Oh, my gosh
14:58I think the back looks amazing
15:00Can you turn around to show Lydia?
15:02Wow
15:02No
15:02Yeah, that looks great
15:03Oh, no
15:05Oh, no
15:07Is it too tight?
15:08I'm not so happy with the way that the back piece is setting
15:13Thank you
15:18I mean, we could force it by sewing it on like that
15:24And it'll force it to sort of, like, stand out a bit
15:26Like, we could try that or
15:28Yeah
15:28I'm sewing in the second go day
15:33We both need to be sewing right now, so
15:36Okay
15:37We've just got to get these on
15:38We're literally speed sewing for our lives right now
15:42Why does the thread always come unfreaded when you have no time?
15:46Breathe
15:46Holger, breathe
15:48If we could just have you step back into it now
15:52Is it tighter?
15:53Yeah
15:54A little, a little, a little sort of cape
15:55Yeah
15:56One minute, we've got one minute
16:02Oh, stuck on your hair, I'm so sorry
16:04Knitters, needles down, the challenge is over
16:12It's time to get those Aaron jumpers on the catwalk
16:17Okay, attitude, right?
16:20Yeah, good, good, good
16:21Isaac and Elsa's approach was obviously very different from ours
16:28Which makes it unpredictable
16:29I think particularly as the group has gotten smaller
16:33Your individual contribution in the group challenge
16:36Could be the difference between staying and going
16:37So, yeah, it's intense
16:39Well done, knitters
16:43Aaron, you glad that one's over
16:46Oh my gosh
16:46So, let the knit way begin
16:49What do you think of the first one?
17:10Well, we asked for Aaron, didn't we?
17:12And we asked for Fit
17:13And Fit
17:14So, this is one garment
17:17And this is from another garment
17:19And they've used that shaping really well
17:22Round the back
17:23Using another sample of knitwear
17:25The contrast colour works particularly in certain places
17:31Also, this newly created crochet edge
17:35Gives amazing fit
17:37Because it can be laced
17:39Yeah
17:39Onto the body
17:40Great, it's really, really great
17:43That top is really, really successful
17:46With this very nice single rib
17:50Neck cuff
17:52It looks a little bit bulky
17:58In a couple of places
18:00It ruches out, doesn't it?
18:03It does
18:03It's coming out because you have too many stitches
18:06Yep
18:07I'm less sure about these wings
18:11Very obvious stitching
18:15You know, if you're going to do kind of sewing
18:17And adding things in
18:20When it gets to the catwalk level
18:22It has to be really, really precise
18:24This sewing and edge doesn't work
18:27Catwalk pieces have to have impact
18:31You have one chance on the runway
18:34To really say something
18:37And I think it just needed to be a little bit more wow
18:40Well, impact
18:41Impact, yeah
18:43Thank you very much
18:45Are you ready for the next one?
18:46I love this
19:06There we go
19:07I think it's really, really great
19:10The sleeves here
19:13I'm imagining might have been the original back and front
19:17Taking the sleeves and making them into the body
19:20Taking the body and making them into the sleeves
19:23Is very clever
19:24Yeah
19:25The sleeves add this huge drama
19:29The shape is really good
19:32They've had to go from a huge number of stitches
19:35They have
19:35To bring them all in
19:37To a much, much smaller number of stitches
19:39So that this works as a cuff
19:41We can see the Aran
19:44Is amplified
19:45By having strong coloured godets
19:48For it to be offset with
19:51It's a lovely piece of knitting
19:53When the model walks
19:58The thing that you see is the Aran
20:00Sweeping up the catwalk
20:02I love the way the Aran's been used
20:04It's making its own repurposed statement
20:08Which is what we asked for
20:10Aran
20:10Re-purposed
20:13Okay, Diane, Sheila
20:19It's time to make your decision
20:21In first place
20:22This week
20:24Is
20:25This dress here
20:29Can I ask
20:31Who made it?
20:33It was me
20:33It was us
20:34Us too
20:34So we felt this dress
20:36Had the impact
20:38For the catwalk
20:39Who knitted all the go days?
20:41I knitted most of them
20:42But Hockey didn't
20:43I did one
20:43I did one
20:45So, Ilse and Isaac
20:47Some of the finishing
20:49We felt wasn't what we expect
20:52In semi-final week
20:53Well, let's see what the solo challenge
20:56Has in store for us
20:57I mean, we all know what the game is about
21:02When the solo challenge comes
21:03It's every man or woman for themselves
21:06It is so close now
21:07I really want to get to the final
21:09What a semi-final we've had so far
21:17And only our solo knits are standing in the way of the game of wool final
21:22Not winning in the group challenge at this stage in the competition puts you in a really, really precarious situation
21:29We'll need to really hit hard with the solos
21:32Okay, knitters
21:36It's time for the solo challenge
21:38Di and Sheila would love for you to make a refashioned bag
21:43We want you to make a bag
21:47But the important thing is the material
21:50And we want you to repurpose your material to make into a yarn
21:55The fabric that you have chosen has to work effectively as a yarn
22:02No matter what it originally was
22:04So we will still be looking for structure and stitch choices
22:09And finally, practicality
22:13It has to function as a bag
22:16With a place in the final at stake
22:20You have ten hours for this challenge
22:22Let's get knitting
22:23For the solo challenge
22:30The judges are expecting to see exquisite and uniquely handcrafted bags
22:35Made from unexpected fabrics
22:37I'm using running leggings and gym tights
22:40If it can handle people doing squats in them
22:43Then they can handle your shopping
22:45This challenge will test the knitters' yarn selection
22:49Stitch precision and structural ingenuity
22:53Pushing their skills to the limit
22:55In the last chance to secure themselves a place in the final
22:58I'm absolutely going to go into this fighting
23:01I really want to go to the finals
23:03Knitters are free to crochet or knit their bags
23:08But the first step is to create the yarn
23:11By cutting any material they want into long strips
23:14Next, they should construct the bags by either working in the round
23:18Or by assembling individual panels
23:21Which will be sewn together
23:22Finally, knitters must securely attach handles or straps
23:26To ensure their upcycled bag passes the judge's weight test
23:30Refashioned handbags
23:34What inspired that challenge?
23:36The thing that is really challenging about this
23:38Is actually the material
23:40We really wanted to see what people could do
23:42With their own form of yarn
23:46We want them to consider a shape, a form
23:49I think how they manage their handles
23:52Is going to be a really big challenge
23:56With the team knit win in the bag
24:00Holger has now got his sights on a record-breaking third sheet badge
24:04I am cutting up a bunch of t-shirts
24:07I've chosen t-shirts because it makes a very clean stitch definition
24:12What we're ending up with in terms of the overall look
24:15Is something that's a bit more bohemian, kind of festival-y
24:20Holger will be transforming a selection of t-shirts into a festival saddlebag
24:25His construction incorporates a combination of slip stitch, single, half double and double crochet stitches
24:33To give it a chic scalloped look while maintaining structural integrity
24:37He's also planning a shoulder strap, a bespoke crochet button and decorative fringing
24:43Glastonbury, we're coming for you
24:45To be honest, I'm not a great festival-goer
24:48So I don't really know what you need to take
24:49I know I look surprised
24:51But whatever you need, it will fit in there
24:54Elsa!
24:58Hello!
24:58It's good to see that you separate your darts and your lights from your laundry
25:01Yeah, always
25:02So what have we got here?
25:04We've got...
25:05Leggings?
25:06Yeah!
25:07These are a mixture of me, my mum and my sister's gym leggings
25:12Okay, do you all go to the gym together as a family?
25:14No, no
25:15Okay, so why these?
25:18Well, my design is an active bag for active people made from things that active people wear
25:24Okay!
25:26It was one World War II pattern I seen to make slippers from old stockings or tights
25:31So that's what made me think it's got to be tights
25:34Elsa has raided her family's laundry basket for her variety of super stretchy yarn
25:41She will crochet her active bag alternating between double and treble crochet stitches
25:46To create a solid base
25:48Finally, she will add a shoulder strap and a water bottle pocket
25:52Feel the burn, baby
25:53So how are you feeling after the group challenge?
25:58I'm feeling all right after the group challenge
26:00Holger and Lydia's design was something special
26:04How are you feeling about the possibility of someone being cast off in this group?
26:08All I can do is my best and hope that the judges like what they see
26:11So you've decided to crochet?
26:13Yeah, I think with this material I've got to be quite conscious because I don't want it to stretch too much
26:19So I've got to take some of the stretch with me as I crochet
26:24And I think it's easier for me to adjust my crochet tension than my knitting tension
26:28Sure, well, it's in the hands of Diane Sheila now, isn't it?
26:30Yep
26:31The knitting gods
26:32Also hoping those knitting gods will be looking down favourably on her is Lydia
26:39She is upcycling wax print fabric for her bag
26:42A traditional African material known for its bold and vibrant patterns
26:46Dresses, hats, you can make anything in wax print as I'm trying to show you right now with my bag
26:54But using this fabric as yarn is tricky because the stiff cotton has no stretch
26:59Honestly, knitting with this is a full body workout
27:01It is flipping hard work
27:03Lydia's traditional wax print bag will be knit in the round using the linen stitch
27:10Which creates a beautiful woven look
27:13But because of its density, it takes longer to knit
27:16She will crochet around plastic rings to give her bag handles
27:20Because I'm slipping every other stitch in the linen stitch
27:26I'm essentially doing each row twice
27:28So it grows really slowly
27:30So it's not going to be huge
27:31But it's definitely more like a handle top bag
27:33I would like to think I'm in with a chance to win Big Knitter this week
27:38But I don't think I'm the only one in with a chance
27:40So we'll just see which way the judges go
27:42Two hours into the challenge and the knitters should be well into the body of their bags
27:52But Isaac is still meticulously creating his yarn
27:55Once I've finished the caps on this t-shirt
27:58It will unravel into one long strip
28:02I'm using scissors
28:03Which may be a little slower going
28:07But achieving precision in the finished product is all in the working
28:12Isaac, what's the plan?
28:14Isaac is using a combination of black and white t-shirts to create his humbag
28:27He will knit the bag in panels of striped stocking stitch
28:31And then crochet around hair curlers for his handles
28:34Finishing with a zip
28:35And after impressing with last week's lace
28:38He is planning to elevate his humbag
28:40With a delicate lace crochet for the wrapper
28:42My grandma always used to have a bag of mint humbugs
28:48That she would share out with people
28:49I grew up not far from my grandparents
28:51You know, during the school holidays
28:53They used to look after me
28:54And I didn't know this until after she died
28:57But she used to crochet
28:58And actually we found a pattern that she had been working on
29:02Made with some lace
29:04So the decorative wrappers on my bag
29:06Are actually going to be that same lace pattern
29:07Oh, that's really nice
29:09I'm kind of at a point in my life
29:12Where the world is my oyster
29:13So this competition is just something that I can use to grow from
29:17I didn't go into this expecting to get on the show in the first place
29:23To get this far
29:24To win would just be gravy
29:26But I know my grandma
29:28She would have been proud of me regardless of what I produced
29:30Yeah, I know she's up there looking down on me
29:33Being like, come on, get to the final
29:35With a place in the final up for grabs
29:40The judges are planning a rigorous weight test
29:42So knitters must consider strength as well as style
29:46How is that knitting up?
29:50Is it quite a struggle?
29:52It's not the funnest thing to knit with, no
29:54The goal for my bag sort of was to make it look woven
29:57So I'm doing the linen stitch
29:58Yes, I love linen stitch
30:00In weave, you have lines going in both directions
30:03They're firm, they do not give
30:06This actually gives you lines going in both directions in the same way
30:12And that creates strength
30:15Yeah
30:15It's a really good stitch for bag material
30:19Hi, Holger
30:24So, what are you doing?
30:26This is where we are at the moment
30:27The way this is constructed
30:28You're starting with very small stitches
30:30Like slip stitches
30:31Then you do single crochet
30:33Half double
30:34Double crochet
30:34You can see that V that forms here
30:37This is because the stitches in the centre
30:38Are taller than the stitches on the outside
30:40Can I have a feel?
30:41Of course you can
30:42Thank you
30:43Great
30:45Love the idea of that
30:46So when we get something heavy in this
30:49It will not do a deck chair on us, no
30:51It's not going to do a deck chair
30:52This structure will actually help that, won't it?
30:56And what's going to go there?
30:57There's going to be a crochet button
30:59Oh
30:59Well, I'm very glad to hear that
31:03I said, why not give it to you?
31:07I've come into this to make it as far as I can
31:12The main thing for me is I want to enjoy this whole process
31:14I lost my last job just when the pandemic started
31:19And then my dad started to get less well
31:22Because I wasn't working, I decided to move back and look after him
31:26Me and my life and everything was completely on hold
31:29So I was there for him
31:32Which is absolutely fine because he was my dad
31:36But I felt after he passed and I came back to the UK
31:41I felt not only do I need to rebuild my life a little bit
31:45But also make this about myself
31:47And when I saw the casting call I thought, you know what
31:51You can do something that you actually just indulge in
31:54Painstakingly cutting his strips of yarn
32:03Has taken Isaac much longer than he anticipated
32:06This is taking so long
32:07So he's now at least three hours behind
32:10I still need to connect the two of them
32:12And I also need to do the handles
32:13And the lace on the sides
32:15So I have, like, quite a bit to go
32:17Isaac's failure to finish has come under scrutiny before
32:21So it's imperative he stays on track with this challenge
32:24Yeah, I think time's probably my biggest enemy
32:26Hi Elsa
32:31What are you doing?
32:33I'm making a gym bag from gym leggings
32:36Oh!
32:40In terms of holding the weight
32:42You're sure?
32:44You've done your research?
32:45You've done your homework?
32:46As I'm going, I'm trying to take stretch out of it
32:49By adjusting my tension
32:50To try and keep it even
32:52Okay
32:53Holger, do you mind taking wee Tom out there, please?
33:01He's got a message for you
33:01Has he? Where is it?
33:04You're halfway through the challenge
33:05Oh
33:05Knitters, you are halfway through the bag challenge
33:09At the halfway mark
33:12Knitters should be starting to complete the body of the bags
33:15And working up the straps, handles and finishing touches
33:18I'm happy with how it's coming together
33:21But my god
33:22It is hard work
33:25Having nightmares about how to stabilise the bag
33:29I was like, I might have to start cutting into my own trousers
33:31To get some strength into this thing
33:34Please don't cut into your trousers
33:35We sad schoolboy leaving the barn
33:38This competition is quite tough
33:42I feel like the first half
33:44I'd been given a few high ranks
33:46I'd been given the first sheet
33:48I was feeling quite confident
33:50But then from week four, kids week
33:53I was like, hmm
33:54Every week since then
33:56I've had a bit more doubt
33:57Over how well I'm doing
33:59At this stage in the competition
34:01The pressure's definitely on
34:03It is quite daunting
34:04Looking for a darning needle
34:11That is big enough to put my tights through
34:13So that I can get the pockets on
34:15I'm trying not to feel defeated
34:17I'm rattled
34:18I think that's me
34:19I think that's me a goner
34:21It's the semi-final
34:30And the knitters are over halfway through
34:32Their solo challenge
34:33Upcycling unusual fabrics
34:35Into show-stopping bags
34:37I think the biggest workout
34:40These leggings have seen is this one
34:42It's quite tough to use
34:45Good job
34:46There's a five-time Olympian on hand
34:48Do you think we should do some hand yoga?
34:50Oh God
34:51Stretch them out to the side
34:54Touch your head
34:55Shoulders
34:56Knees
34:57And tails
34:58You got them before I did
35:00In the final stages of the challenge
35:04Knitters should be attaching handles or straps
35:07Strong enough to withstand the judge's weight test
35:10But while some are reinforcing with structural elements
35:13I'm going to be using these as the handles
35:15I need to crochet into the bag
35:17Around the handle to secure it in
35:19I'm doing the shoulder strap
35:20I'm crocheting over a core
35:22Because this has no stretch whatsoever
35:24There would be nothing worse than Diane Sheena picking up the bag
35:27And the handle falls off
35:28Mm-mm
35:29Ailsa is hoping the strength of stitches alone
35:32Will pass the test
35:33If I make my tension really tight
35:36I can take the stretch out of it
35:38It's a stretchy fabric
35:39That seems like such a stupid decision now
35:42I think I'm on a shugly peg
35:45A shugly peg just means that my position's not secure
35:52Knitters, we have one hour to go
35:55Until we find out whether you have designer bags
35:57Or bags for life
35:58Pressure is on
36:00With one hour to go
36:03Knitters should be moving on to the final flourishes
36:06You're putting on the button
36:07The button was the last bit that was crocheted
36:09How much more have you got left to do?
36:11The fringing and the lining
36:13You're lining it?
36:14I'm trying to
36:15I just need to do my handles now
36:18It's not looking likely that I'll get any lace on
36:21With less than an hour remaining
36:24Isaac is sacrificing his humbug wrappers
36:27I'm feeling disappointed that I'm not going to get to do the lace that my grandma had done
36:31I've once again messed up my time
36:34This is something that I'm known for
36:36I'm just adding my little water bottle slot at the side
36:42Just to add another wee bit
36:43What am I doing?
36:45That's a lost cause
36:47I don't think there's anything to lose by trying it
36:49And if it looks awful, rip it out
36:51Which it does anyway
36:53No, that is not
36:54That is not what we're saying right now
36:56It's what I'm certainly thinking
36:58I'm on my second handle
37:01I've hit my peak with this
37:02I just want to stop
37:03I'm so close to the end
37:04I'm so close to the end
37:06But I just want to stop
37:06I'm literally just cringing
37:10And it is just strips of fabric that are being pulled through
37:13Do you know where my zip's gone?
37:16There it is
37:16Actually, no, handle's more important
37:21Sorry
37:22It's a bag with secure handles
37:25Feeling good
37:26And I think that's where we're going to leave this
37:28Wow
37:29Hold it up
37:30There you go
37:31Wow, that's a bag
37:33Knitters, your time is up
37:37Even in its full glory
37:40I don't think my bag is super attractive
37:41After ten hours
37:44That's four refashioned bags
37:46In the bag
37:49Feeling cautiously optimistic
37:51I've done everything I can do
37:53I really just ran out of time
37:54Like that's all it was
37:55It doesn't have a closure
37:56It doesn't have the features that I was planning on putting on it
37:58It's not clean
37:59It's bad
38:00It's really bad
38:02Well done knitters
38:05It's now time for Di and Sheila to try out your bag
38:08So first up we have Lydia
38:10Ah
38:19This is strong
38:22Amazingly strong fabric
38:25You're using a linen stitch
38:28Which you're probably regretting at this point
38:30But it does give a look of a woven bag
38:34Which is really nice
38:36And of course everything is built from the base
38:40And you've integrated the handles into this
38:43For strength
38:44Quite a nice fashion accessory
38:46I think we're ready for the weight test
38:49Can we have some weights Tom?
38:51Yes, you may
38:52So here I have two balls of yarn
38:54That weigh one kilo each
38:56So you've got a two kilogram weight test
38:58Here we go
38:58In they go
38:59That's held very well hasn't it?
39:06It did hold well
39:07The handles
39:07It didn't move
39:09Thank you very much Lydia
39:11Thank you
39:11Next up
39:13Olga
39:13It's a very lovely bag
39:20With a feeling of luxury to it
39:23I do really like this shape
39:25Really interesting
39:26Lovely shape
39:27And this construction
39:30Is like a scallop
39:31Yeah
39:32The shell
39:32Here and here
39:35Ah
39:37A bobble
39:39A bobble button
39:39A proper bobble button
39:41Yes
39:42Very happy to see that
39:43Yes
39:43So this has given it incredible strength
39:48Hasn't it
39:48Which is actually a really good idea
39:51To use a woven fabric inside
39:54So you don't get that stretch
39:56And I like the tassels
39:58Bit of flamboyance
40:00And
40:01Bit of fun
40:02Fun
40:02And you've lined it
40:04Yeah
40:04It's good to have a lining
40:06I think it needs the weight test
40:09That's really not bad
40:16Thank you very much Holger
40:19Thank you
40:19Next up we have
40:21Elsa
40:21Huh
40:28So this idea came from
40:34The repurposing of tights
40:36Yep
40:36That's a really nice concept
40:38An idea to take through
40:40To a sports bag
40:42We very much like the circularity
40:44Of where it came from
40:46And what it ended up being used for
40:49The construction hasn't quite worked
40:53It is quite tricky working with the fabric
40:57That you chose
40:58And I think all those variations
41:00From the different pairs of leggings
41:02Has given you quite a trouble
41:04In keeping that uniformity
41:06Are you ready for the weight test
41:09Here we go
41:12One and
41:13Oh god
41:14Two
41:14I think it might be better
41:22If we pull up
41:23It needs that double handle
41:25Thank you very much Elsa
41:27Isaac
41:28So it's a great idea
41:36The hum bag
41:37You were going to create
41:41A little lace for some wrappers
41:42Yeah
41:42Just ran out of time
41:44Didn't make it
41:46No
41:46Also your original idea for the fastening
41:51Yeah it was a zip
41:52But again
41:53Didn't have time
41:54Not being able to put the zip in
41:58Yeah
41:58And insert the lace
42:00It's had an impact
42:01On the design
42:02Yeah
42:02Definitely
42:02We don't get to see
42:04The sides coming together
42:06Yeah
42:06It sits open
42:07Was it just that it took so long
42:10To manipulate
42:11Just the creating the yarn
42:12I think I vastly underestimated
42:14How long it was taking me
42:15Which is a shame
42:16Do you think we should try
42:19The ultimate test
42:20Here we come
42:20Tom
42:21Okay
42:21Let's see
42:22Here we go
42:23That's pretty good
42:28So a shame
42:30It didn't get finished
42:31Yeah
42:31Thank you very much Isaac
42:35Thank you
42:36Well done knitters
42:39You really pulled it out
42:41Of the bag there
42:41And for one of you
42:43Victory is in the bag
42:44It is now time
42:45For me to take
42:46Di and Sheila
42:47Into the situation room
42:49To see who has bagged
42:50A place
42:51In the game of wool
42:52Final
42:53I'd flip enough
42:56To be the first person
42:57To get three badges
42:58That would be amazing
42:59I would feel
43:00It probably comes down
43:01To between Lydia and me
43:03I can't really call it
43:05I'm definitely at risk
43:08Of going home
43:09I think it would be foolish
43:09To think that I wasn't
43:10At risk of going home
43:11There's a huge chance
43:12And a huge possibility
43:13That it will be me
43:15Saying goodbye today
43:16This week has been wild
43:20It's really getting
43:21Close to the wire now
43:23Who stood out for you?
43:27So Lydia and Holger
43:29The long dress
43:33With the enormous sleeves
43:35It was pretty amazing
43:36The design for that dress
43:38Was mainly
43:39I mean Holger and Lydia
43:40Worked on it
43:41But Holger was very much
43:42Responsible for
43:43How it all came together
43:44But do you think
43:45That he was really able
43:46To show off his skills
43:47In that challenge?
43:48I do
43:48Yeah
43:49And they've done really well
43:50In the bag challenge
43:51Yes both of them
43:52Have done extremely well
43:53Very strong
43:54So we have two people
43:59Not performing as well
44:01In both challenges
44:03Ailsa
44:05She seemed to have lost
44:09That sparkling design element
44:12That she puts into things
44:13She kind of just lost her way
44:15Isaac
44:16His bag was completely unfinished
44:21By semi-final week
44:23We really do expect everyone
44:25To have finished their projects
44:27Yeah
44:29So hard
44:31Have you made a decision?
44:35Yes
44:35Well knitters
44:43It's now time
44:44To find out who has knit big this week
44:48And guaranteed themselves
44:49A place in the final
44:51The big knitter
44:54This week
44:55Is
44:56Holger
45:01Congratulations
45:03Congratulations Holger
45:06We'll give you a big
45:07Thank you
45:09And this part gets harder and harder
45:15Every week
45:16So the knitter being cast off
45:20This week
45:21Is
45:22Isaac
45:29August
45:31Isaac
45:32Oh that hurt to say
45:34You've done incredibly well
45:38I had a bad week
45:40This is not a shock
45:42But in the best kind of way
45:43Like I've just had such a fantastic experience
45:45Yeah
45:46I'm very lucky this week
45:49It feels amazing to be in the final
45:52I really need to bring my A game next week
45:54Me and Holger are both up there
45:56So it was going to be one of us
45:58So yeah
45:59I'm really excited to be in the final next week
46:01And I'm absolutely going to give it my all
46:02Feels like this is the last push
46:04Now we're literally there
46:05We're on the cusp of the final
46:06We're about to kind of
46:07Battle it out
46:09To the death
46:11Next time
46:13Welcome
46:14To the final
46:16Of Game of War
46:17We've come this far
46:18I'm going to throw
46:19Absolutely everything I've got
46:21Food for the stars
46:21And then you'll land on the moon
46:22Britain's best knitter
46:25Is
46:26We'll be right back
