This narrative unfolds around Jalm Riou, a prosperous farmer in France, his vain daughter Barbaïk, and Jégu, the farmhand deeply in love with her. Jégu, in his desolation, encounters a magical brownie who promises to help him win Barbaïk's heart, in gratitude for freeing him in his earlier animal form. The brownie takes on farm duties, allowing Barbaïk a life of leisure. Mistaking Jégu for the one behind the miraculous chores, she consents to marrying him once her father dies, envisioning an easy life. However, post-wedding, the chores magically stop, exposing her misjudgment and igniting her wrath against the brownie. Despite her anger, she attempts to use the brownie again, only to be made a fool with a tailless horse. The story culminates with Barbaïk's vengeance against the brownie during a dwarfs’ fête leading them to retreat permanently, resulting in hardship and poverty befalling both Jégu and Barbaïk. The tale is a cautionary fable about vanity, misplaced reliance on magic, and the consequences of ingratitude.
