Here are the details of the plane crash and the survival of the four children in the Amazon, along with updates and context.
What happened ??
On 1 May 2023, a light aircraft Cessna 206 (registration HK-2803) operated by Avianline Charters crashed in the remote jungle of the Caquetá Department, Colombia, during a flight from Araracuara to San José del Guaviare.
On board were 7 people: the pilot, one other adult, and 5 passengers (a mother and her four children) according to the investigation.
Immediately after the crash, the pilot and one adult died on impact; the mother survived for several days but then died of her injuries. The four children survived the crash and then endured the jungle.
The children & their survival
The four children were from the indigenous Huitoto people (also spelled Witoto) and were aged roughly: 13 years (Lesly), 9 years (Soleiny), 4–5 years (Tien Noriel), and about 1 year old (Cristin) at the time of the crash.
The mother reportedly urged them to “go and get help” before succumbing to her injuries; the children then survived for around 40 days in the jungle before being rescued.
Their survival has been credited largely to:
Their indigenous knowledge of the forest (food sources, shelter) from the Huitoto tradition.
The oldest sister’s leadership caring for her siblings after the crash.
The timing (forest was in fruit/seed harvest season) and ingredients they used (cassava/fariña flour left from wreckage, seeds from local trees) to sustain themselves.
The search was extremely difficult because of the dense rainforest, lack of roads, winding rivers, and presence of wildlife.
The wreckage of the aircraft was located about two weeks after the crash, but the children were not yet found then.
Finally, on 9 June 2023 (approximately 40 days after the crash), the four children were found and rescued by a combined effort of the Colombian military and indigenous volunteers.

Upon rescue, the children were malnourished and had many insect bites, but no immediate life-threatening injuries were reported. They were evacuated to Bogotá for medical care.
A major issue after rescue: custody and care of the children. There has been a legal and emotional dispute between maternal grandparents and the children’s father (for the two youngest) over who should raise them.
On 9 June 2024, Colombia marked the first anniversary of their rescue. Authorities emphasized their recovery and the importance of preserving their indigenous culture in the process.
This event has been widely described as a “miracle” of survival in one of the world’s most inhospitable terrains: the Amazon rainforest.
