00:00Is Bulgaria's youth protesting en masse against the EU?
00:08For weeks, tens of thousands of Bulgarians, many of them young people,
00:13have been mobilising across the country's main cities.
00:17Online posts have spread multiple misleading explanations for the protests.
00:21Some have gone as far as portraying them as anti-EU,
00:25falsely claiming that Bulgaria's planned Eurozone entry has been cancelled.
00:29But reports from Bulgaria show that the situation is more complex.
00:33Much of the anger expressed by protesters appeared to focus
00:37on long-standing issues of corruption and political interference.
00:41Speaking to the Cube, protester and secondary school student Martin Atanasov
00:45said the strikes were not anti-EU by nature,
00:49bringing together people with diverse views
00:51and centred on demands for transparency, trust and responsible government.
00:56Some online posts claim that the government's fall was a victory against leftism.
01:01However, BTA News, the country's national news agency,
01:05reported that the protest message was clear.
01:07Resignation. Pivsky and Borisov out of power.
01:11Both Borisov, head of the largest ruling centre-right party,
01:15and Pivsky, a party leader, have been accused of corruption.
01:19They deny wrongdoing.
01:20A survey conducted by Bulgaria's Ministry of Finance
01:23shows public opinion is divided on joining the Euro.
01:27Nearly half of Bulgarians oppose adopting the single currency,
01:31while a similar share supports it.
01:33However, contrary to online claims,
01:35Bulgaria has not abandoned its Eurozone plans.
01:39The European Commission says the country is still set to adopt the Euro
01:42on 1st January 2026.
