00:00:00I
00:00:30Marley was dead, to begin with.
00:00:34There is no doubt whatever about that.
00:00:36Old Marley was as dead as a doornail.
00:00:40Scrooge knew he was dead.
00:00:42Of course he did.
00:00:44How could it be otherwise?
00:00:46Scrooge and he were partners for I don't know how many years.
00:00:50Scrooge was his sole executor,
00:00:53his sole administrator,
00:00:55his sole friend,
00:00:56and his sole mourner.
00:01:00Scrooge never painted out old Marley's name.
00:01:04There it stood, years afterwards, above the warehouse door.
00:01:08Scrooge and Marley.
00:01:12Sometimes people new to the business called Scrooge Scrooge,
00:01:15and sometimes Marley.
00:01:17But he answered to both names.
00:01:19It was all the same to him.
00:01:22Oh, but he was a tight-fisted hand at the grindstone, Scrooge.
00:01:27The squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner.
00:01:34Hard and sharp as flint,
00:01:35from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire.
00:01:39Secret and self-contained,
00:01:41and solitary as an oyster.
00:01:45Once upon a time,
00:01:47of all the good days in the year,
00:01:49on Christmas Eve,
00:01:51old Scrooge sat busy in his counting house.
00:01:55It was cold, bleak, biting weather.
00:01:58Foggy with awe.
00:01:59And he could hear the people in the court outside
00:02:02go wheezing up and down,
00:02:04beating their hands upon their breasts,
00:02:06and stamping their feet upon the pavement stones to warm them.
00:02:11The door of Scrooge's counting house was open,
00:02:14that he might keep his eye upon his clerk,
00:02:18who, in a dismal little cell beyond,
00:02:22a sort of tank,
00:02:23was copying letters.
00:02:25A Merry Christmas, Uncle.
00:02:28God save you,
00:02:29cried a cheerful voice.
00:02:31It was the voice of Scrooge's nephew,
00:02:33who came upon him so quickly,
00:02:35that this was the first intimation he had of his approach.
00:02:38Bah, said Scrooge.
00:02:39Humbug.
00:02:41He had so heated himself
00:02:43with rapid walking in the fog and frost,
00:02:45this nephew of Scrooge's,
00:02:46that he was all in a glow.
00:02:49His face was ruddy and handsome,
00:02:52his eyes sparkled,
00:02:54and his breath smoked again.
00:02:56Christmas a humbug,
00:02:58said Scrooge's nephew.
00:02:59You don't mean that, I'm sure.
00:03:02I do, said Scrooge.
00:03:03Merry Christmas.
00:03:05What right have you to be merry?
00:03:07What reason have you to be merry?
00:03:09You're poor enough.
00:03:11Come then,
00:03:12returned the nephew gaily.
00:03:13What right have you to be dismal?
00:03:15What reason have you to be morose?
00:03:17You're rich enough.
00:03:20Scrooge,
00:03:21having no better answer ready on the spur of the moment,
00:03:23said bah again,
00:03:25and followed it up with
00:03:26Pumbug.
00:03:28Don't be cross, uncle,
00:03:30said the nephew.
00:03:31What else can I be,
00:03:33returned the uncle,
00:03:34when I live in such a world of fools as this?
00:03:37Merry Christmas.
00:03:38Out upon Merry Christmas.
00:03:40What's Christmas time to you
00:03:42but a time for paying bills without money?
00:03:44A time for finding yourself a year older,
00:03:46but not an hour richer.
00:03:47A time for balancing your books
00:03:49and having every item in them
00:03:52through a round dozen of months
00:03:53presented dead against you.
00:03:56Don't be angry, uncle.
00:03:58Come,
00:03:59dine with us tomorrow.
00:04:01I want nothing from you.
00:04:03I ask nothing of you.
00:04:04Why cannot we be friends?
00:04:07Good afternoon,
00:04:08said Scrooge.
00:04:10I am sorry with all my heart
00:04:12to find you so resolute.
00:04:14We've never had any quarrel
00:04:16to which I have been a party,
00:04:18but I have made the trial
00:04:19in homage
00:04:20to Christmas,
00:04:21and I'll keep my Christmas humour
00:04:23to the last.
00:04:24So a Merry Christmas, uncle.
00:04:27Good afternoon,
00:04:28said Scrooge.
00:04:29His nephew left the room
00:04:32without an angry word,
00:04:33notwithstanding.
00:04:34He stopped at the outer door
00:04:36to bestow the greetings of the season
00:04:38on the clerk,
00:04:40who, cold as he was,
00:04:41was warmer than Scrooge,
00:04:43for he returned them cordially.
00:04:45This lunatic,
00:04:47in letting Scrooge's nephew out,
00:04:48had let two other people in.
00:04:52They were portly gentlemen,
00:04:53pleasant to behold,
00:04:55and now stood,
00:04:57with their hats off,
00:04:58in Scrooge's office.
00:05:00Scrooge and Marley's,
00:05:02I believe,
00:05:03said one of the gentlemen
00:05:04referring to his list.
00:05:05Have I the pleasure
00:05:07of addressing
00:05:07Mr Scrooge
00:05:09or Mr Marley?
00:05:11Mr Marley has been dead
00:05:13these seven years,
00:05:15Scrooge replied.
00:05:16He died seven years ago
00:05:19this very night.
00:05:21At this festive season
00:05:23of the year,
00:05:24Mr Scrooge,
00:05:25said the gentleman,
00:05:26taking up a pen,
00:05:27it is more than usually desirable
00:05:29that we should make
00:05:30some slight provision
00:05:32for the poor and destitute
00:05:34who suffer greatly
00:05:35at the present time.
00:05:37Are there no prisons?
00:05:39asked Scrooge.
00:05:41Plenty of prisons,
00:05:42said the gentleman,
00:05:43laying down the pen again.
00:05:44And the union workhouses,
00:05:46demanded Scrooge,
00:05:47are they still in operation?
00:05:50Under the impression
00:05:51that they scarcely furnish
00:05:53Christian cheer of mind
00:05:55or body to the multitude,
00:05:57returned the gentleman.
00:05:58A few of us
00:05:59are endeavouring
00:06:00to raise a fund,
00:06:02to buy the poor
00:06:03some meat and drink
00:06:04and means of warmth.
00:06:06What shall I put you down for?
00:06:08Nothing, Scrooge replied.
00:06:11You wish to be anonymous?
00:06:13I wish to be left alone,
00:06:16said Scrooge.
00:06:17Since you ask me
00:06:18what I wish, gentlemen,
00:06:19that is my answer.
00:06:21I don't make merry myself
00:06:23at Christmas
00:06:23and I can't afford
00:06:24to make idle people merry.
00:06:27I hope to support
00:06:28the establishments
00:06:29I have mentioned.
00:06:30They cost enough
00:06:31and those who are badly off
00:06:34must go there.
00:06:37Seeing clearly
00:06:38that it would be useless
00:06:39to pursue their point,
00:06:41the gentleman withdrew.
00:06:42At length,
00:06:46the hour of shutting up
00:06:47the counting house arrived.
00:06:49With an ill will,
00:06:51Scrooge dismounted
00:06:52from his stool
00:06:53and tacitly admitted
00:06:55the fact
00:06:56to the expectant clerk
00:06:57in the tank
00:06:58who instantly snuffed
00:07:00his candle out
00:07:01and put on his hat.
00:07:02You'll want all day tomorrow,
00:07:04I suppose,
00:07:05said Scrooge,
00:07:06if quite convenient, sir.
00:07:08It is not convenient,
00:07:10said Scrooge,
00:07:10and it's not fair.
00:07:12If I was to stop
00:07:13half a crown for it,
00:07:14you'd think yourself
00:07:15ill-used,
00:07:16I'll be bound.
00:07:17The clerk observed
00:07:18that it was only
00:07:20once a year.
00:07:21A poor excuse
00:07:22for picking a man's pocket
00:07:24every 25th of December,
00:07:26said Scrooge,
00:07:27buttoning his great coat
00:07:28to the chin.
00:07:29But I suppose
00:07:30you must have
00:07:31the whole day.
00:07:33Be here all the earlier
00:07:34next morning.
00:07:36Scrooge took
00:07:37his melancholy dinner
00:07:38in his usual
00:07:39melancholy tavern
00:07:41and, having read
00:07:42all the newspapers
00:07:43and beguiled
00:07:44the rest of the evening
00:07:45with his banker's book,
00:07:47went home to bed.
00:07:50He lived in chambers
00:07:51which had once belonged
00:07:52to his deceased partner.
00:07:55The fog and frost
00:07:56so hung about
00:07:57the black old gateway
00:07:59of the house
00:07:59that it seemed
00:08:00as if the genius
00:08:02of the weather
00:08:02sat in mournful meditation
00:08:05on the threshold.
00:08:07Now,
00:08:08it is a fact
00:08:09that there was
00:08:11nothing at all particular
00:08:12about the knocker
00:08:13on the door
00:08:15except that it was
00:08:16very large.
00:08:18Let it also be
00:08:18borne in mind
00:08:19that Scrooge
00:08:20had not bestowed
00:08:21one thought
00:08:22on Marley
00:08:23since his last mention
00:08:25of his seven years
00:08:26dead partner
00:08:27that afternoon.
00:08:28And then,
00:08:29let any man explain
00:08:30to me if he can
00:08:31how it happened
00:08:32that Scrooge,
00:08:34having his key
00:08:35in the lock of the door,
00:08:37saw in the knocker
00:08:38without its undergoing
00:08:39any intermediate process
00:08:40of change.
00:08:42Not a knocker,
00:08:44but Marley's face.
00:08:49Marley's face.
00:08:52It was not angry
00:08:53or ferocious
00:08:54but looked at Scrooge
00:08:56as Marley
00:08:57used to look
00:08:58with ghostly spectacles
00:09:00turned up
00:09:00on its ghostly forehead.
00:09:03As Scrooge
00:09:04looked fixedly
00:09:05at this phenomenon,
00:09:07it was a knocker again.
00:09:10He did pause
00:09:11with a moment's irresolution
00:09:12before he shut the door
00:09:14and he did
00:09:15look cautiously
00:09:16behind it first
00:09:17as if he half expected
00:09:18to be terrified
00:09:19with the sight
00:09:20of Marley's pigtail
00:09:21sticking out
00:09:22into the hall.
00:09:24But there was nothing
00:09:25on the back of the door
00:09:26except the screws
00:09:27and nuts
00:09:28that held the knocker on.
00:09:29So he said,
00:09:30poo, poo
00:09:31and closed it
00:09:32with a bang.
00:09:34Up Scrooge went,
00:09:35not caring
00:09:36a button for that.
00:09:38But before he shut
00:09:40his heavy door,
00:09:41he walked through
00:09:42his rooms
00:09:42to see that all was right.
00:09:44He had just enough
00:09:45recollection of the face
00:09:46to desire to do that.
00:09:48Sitting room,
00:09:49bedroom,
00:09:50lumber room,
00:09:51all as they should be.
00:09:53Quite satisfied,
00:09:54he closed his door
00:09:55and locked himself in.
00:09:57Double locked himself in,
00:09:58which was not his custom.
00:10:00Thus,
00:10:00secured against surprise,
00:10:02he took off his cravat,
00:10:04put on his dressing gown
00:10:05and slippers
00:10:05and his nightcap
00:10:07and sat down
00:10:08before the fire
00:10:09to take his gruel.
00:10:11As he threw his head
00:10:13back in the chair,
00:10:15his glance
00:10:15happened to rest
00:10:17upon a bell.
00:10:18a disused bell
00:10:20that hung in the room.
00:10:22It was with great astonishment
00:10:24and with a strange,
00:10:26inexplicable dread
00:10:28that as he looked,
00:10:30he saw this bell
00:10:32begin to swing.
00:10:33It swung so softly
00:10:37in the outset
00:10:37that it scarcely
00:10:38made a sound.
00:10:40But soon,
00:10:41it rang out loudly
00:10:42and so did
00:10:43every bell
00:10:44in the house.
00:10:45This might have lasted
00:10:47half a minute
00:10:48or a minute,
00:10:49but it seemed
00:10:49an hour.
00:10:51They were succeeded
00:10:53by a clanking noise
00:10:54deep down below,
00:10:55as if some person
00:10:56were dragging
00:10:57a heavy chain
00:10:58over the casks
00:10:59in the wine merchant's cellar.
00:11:00The cellar door
00:11:01flew open
00:11:02with a booming sound
00:11:03and then he heard
00:11:05the noise much louder
00:11:06on the floors below,
00:11:08then coming up the stairs,
00:11:10then coming straight
00:11:12towards his door.
00:11:15It's humbug still,
00:11:17said Scrooge.
00:11:17I won't believe it.
00:11:19His colour changed, though,
00:11:21when,
00:11:22without a pause,
00:11:24it came on through
00:11:25the heavy door
00:11:26and passed into the room
00:11:28before his eyes.
00:11:30The same face,
00:11:33the very same.
00:11:35Marley in his pigtail,
00:11:37usual waistcoat,
00:11:39tights and boots.
00:11:40The tassels on the latter
00:11:42bristling,
00:11:42like his pigtail
00:11:44and his coat skirts
00:11:45and the hair
00:11:47upon his head.
00:11:48The chain he drew
00:11:50was clasped
00:11:51about his middle.
00:11:52It was long
00:11:53and wound about him
00:11:55like a tail
00:11:56and it was made,
00:11:58for Scrooge observed it closely,
00:12:00of cash boxes,
00:12:01keys, padlocks,
00:12:04ledgers,
00:12:04deeds
00:12:05and heavy purses
00:12:07wrought in steel.
00:12:08His body
00:12:10was transparent
00:12:12so that Scrooge,
00:12:14observing him
00:12:15and looking through
00:12:16his waistcoat,
00:12:17could see the two buttons
00:12:18on his coat behind.
00:12:21Scrooge had often heard
00:12:22it said that Marley
00:12:23had no bowels,
00:12:24be did he never believed it
00:12:26until now.
00:12:28Who are you?
00:12:29Ask me who I was.
00:12:33Who were you then?
00:12:35said Scrooge,
00:12:35raising his voice.
00:12:37In life,
00:12:39I was your partner,
00:12:41Jacob Marley.
00:12:43Can you...
00:12:44Can you sit down?
00:12:46asked Scrooge,
00:12:47looking doubtfully at him.
00:12:49I can.
00:12:50Do it then.
00:12:52Scrooge asked the question
00:12:53because he didn't know
00:12:54whether a ghost
00:12:55so transparent
00:12:56might find himself
00:12:57in a condition
00:12:58to take a chair
00:12:59and felt that
00:13:00in the event of it
00:13:01being impossible,
00:13:02it might involve
00:13:02the necessity
00:13:03of an embarrassing explanation.
00:13:05But the ghost
00:13:06sat down
00:13:07on the opposite side
00:13:08of the fireplace
00:13:09as if he were
00:13:10quite used to it.
00:13:12You don't believe in me,
00:13:14observed the ghost.
00:13:16I don't,
00:13:17said Scrooge.
00:13:18At this,
00:13:18the spirit
00:13:19raised a frightful cry
00:13:21and shook its chain
00:13:24with such a dismal
00:13:25and appalling noise
00:13:26that Scrooge
00:13:27held on tight
00:13:28to his chair
00:13:28to save himself
00:13:29from falling
00:13:30into a swoon.
00:13:32But how much greater
00:13:33was his horror
00:13:35when the phantom,
00:13:36taking off the bandage
00:13:38round its head
00:13:39as if it were
00:13:39too warm
00:13:40to wear indoors,
00:13:42its lower jaw
00:13:43dropped down
00:13:44upon its breast.
00:13:46Scrooge
00:13:47fell upon his knees
00:13:48and clasped
00:13:49his hands
00:13:50before his face.
00:13:52Mercy,
00:13:53he said.
00:13:54Dreadful apparition.
00:13:56Why do you
00:13:56trouble me?
00:13:59Man of the worldly mind,
00:14:02replied the ghost.
00:14:03Do you believe
00:14:04in me
00:14:05or not?
00:14:06I do,
00:14:07said Scrooge.
00:14:08I must.
00:14:10But why do spirits
00:14:11walk the earth
00:14:12and why do they
00:14:13come to me?
00:14:14It is required
00:14:16of every man,
00:14:18the ghost returned,
00:14:20that the spirit
00:14:20within him
00:14:21should walk
00:14:22abroad
00:14:23among his fellow men
00:14:24and travel
00:14:26far and wide.
00:14:28And if that spirit
00:14:29goes not forth
00:14:30in life,
00:14:31it is condemned
00:14:32to do so
00:14:33after death.
00:14:35Again,
00:14:36the spectre
00:14:37raised a cry
00:14:37and shook its chain
00:14:39and wrung
00:14:40its shadowy hands.
00:14:41I am here
00:14:43tonight
00:14:44to warn you
00:14:46that you have
00:14:47yet a chance
00:14:48and hope
00:14:49of escaping
00:14:50my fate,
00:14:52a chance
00:14:52and hope
00:14:53of my procuring
00:14:54Ebenezer.
00:14:57You were always
00:14:58a good friend
00:14:59to me,
00:14:59said Scrooge.
00:15:02You will be
00:15:03haunted,
00:15:04resumed the ghost,
00:15:05by three spirits.
00:15:08Scrooge's countenance
00:15:09fell almost as low
00:15:10as the ghosts
00:15:11had done.
00:15:12Is that the chance
00:15:14and hope
00:15:14you mentioned,
00:15:15Jacob?
00:15:15he demanded
00:15:16in a faltering voice.
00:15:18It is.
00:15:20I think I'd rather not,
00:15:22said Scrooge.
00:15:23Without their visits,
00:15:25said the ghost,
00:15:26you cannot hope
00:15:27to shun the path
00:15:29I tread.
00:15:30Expect the first
00:15:32tomorrow
00:15:32when the bell
00:15:34tolls one.
00:15:36Couldn't I take them
00:15:37all at once
00:15:37and have it over,
00:15:38Jacob?
00:15:39hinted Scrooge.
00:15:39expect the second
00:15:42on the next night
00:15:43at the same hour,
00:15:45the third
00:15:46upon the next night
00:15:47when the last
00:15:48stroke of twelve
00:15:49has ceased
00:15:50to vibrate.
00:15:52Look to see me
00:15:54no more,
00:15:55and look that
00:15:56for your own sake
00:15:57you remember
00:15:59what has passed
00:16:00between us.
00:16:01when Scrooge awoke.
00:16:20It was so dark
00:16:21that looking out of bed
00:16:23he could scarcely
00:16:24distinguish
00:16:25the transparent window
00:16:26from the opaque walls
00:16:28of his chamber.
00:16:30He was endeavouring
00:16:31to pierce the darkness
00:16:32with his ferret eyes
00:16:34when the chimes
00:16:36of a neighbouring church
00:16:37struck the four quarters.
00:16:41So he listened
00:16:42for the hour.
00:16:43A quarter past
00:16:46said Scrooge
00:16:47counting.
00:16:49Half past
00:16:50said Scrooge
00:16:51A quarter to it
00:16:54said Scrooge
00:16:55The hour itself
00:16:58said Scrooge
00:16:59triumphantly
00:17:00and nothing else.
00:17:02He spoke
00:17:04before the hour
00:17:05bell sounded
00:17:06which it did now
00:17:08with a deep
00:17:09dull
00:17:10hollow
00:17:11melancholy
00:17:12one.
00:17:16The curtains
00:17:17of his bed
00:17:18were drawn aside
00:17:18and Scrooge
00:17:20starting up
00:17:21into a half
00:17:22recumbent attitude
00:17:23found himself
00:17:25face to face
00:17:27with the unearthly
00:17:29visitor
00:17:29who drew them.
00:17:30It was a strange
00:17:33figure
00:17:34like a child
00:17:35yet not so
00:17:37like a child
00:17:38as like an old man
00:17:39viewed through
00:17:41some supernatural
00:17:42medium.
00:17:44Its hair
00:17:44which hung
00:17:45about its neck
00:17:46and down its back
00:17:47was white
00:17:47as if with age
00:17:48and yet the face
00:17:50had not a wrinkle
00:17:52in it.
00:17:54But the strangest
00:17:55thing about it
00:17:56was that
00:17:57from the crown
00:17:57of its head
00:17:58there sprung
00:17:59a bright
00:18:00clear jet
00:18:01of light
00:18:02by which
00:18:03all this
00:18:03was visible
00:18:04and which
00:18:05was doubtless
00:18:06the occasion
00:18:07of its using
00:18:08in its duller
00:18:09moments
00:18:09a great
00:18:10extinguisher
00:18:10for a cap
00:18:11which it now
00:18:12held under
00:18:12its arm.
00:18:15Are you
00:18:16the spirit
00:18:17sir
00:18:17whose coming
00:18:18was foretold
00:18:19to me
00:18:20asked Scrooge
00:18:21asked Scrooge
00:18:21I am
00:18:23the voice
00:18:25was soft
00:18:26and gentle
00:18:26singularly low
00:18:28as if instead
00:18:29of being so close
00:18:29beside him
00:18:30it were at a distance
00:18:32who
00:18:33who and what
00:18:34are you
00:18:35Scrooge
00:18:36demanded
00:18:36I
00:18:38am the ghost
00:18:39of Christmas
00:18:40past
00:18:41he then
00:18:42made bold
00:18:43to inquire
00:18:44what business
00:18:44brought him
00:18:45here
00:18:45your welfare
00:18:47said the ghost
00:18:48Scrooge
00:18:49expressed himself
00:18:50much obliged
00:18:51but could not
00:18:52help thinking
00:18:52that a night
00:18:53of unbroken rest
00:18:54would have been
00:18:54more conducive
00:18:55to that end
00:18:56the spirit
00:18:57must have heard
00:18:58him thinking
00:18:59for it said
00:18:59immediately
00:19:00your reclamation
00:19:02then
00:19:02take heed
00:19:05it put out
00:19:07its strong
00:19:08hand
00:19:08as it spoke
00:19:09and clasped
00:19:11him gently
00:19:11by the arm
00:19:12rise
00:19:14and walk
00:19:15with me
00:19:15as the words
00:19:19were spoken
00:19:19they passed
00:19:21through the wall
00:19:22and stood
00:19:24upon an open
00:19:24country road
00:19:26with fields
00:19:27on either hand
00:19:28the city
00:19:30had entirely
00:19:30vanished
00:19:31good heaven
00:19:32said Scrooge
00:19:33clasping his
00:19:34hands together
00:19:35as he looked
00:19:35about him
00:19:36I was bred
00:19:38in this place
00:19:39I was a boy
00:19:40here
00:19:41they walked
00:19:43along the road
00:19:43Scrooge
00:19:45recognising
00:19:45every gate
00:19:46and post
00:19:47and tree
00:19:47until a little
00:19:49market town
00:19:49appeared in the
00:19:50distance
00:19:50with its bridge
00:19:52and its church
00:19:53and winding river
00:19:54the school
00:19:57is not quite
00:19:58deserted
00:19:58said the ghost
00:20:00a solitary
00:20:01child
00:20:02neglected
00:20:03by his friends
00:20:04is left
00:20:05there still
00:20:06Scrooge
00:20:08said he knew it
00:20:09and he
00:20:11sopped
00:20:12they left
00:20:14the high road
00:20:15by a well
00:20:15remembered lane
00:20:16and soon
00:20:17approached
00:20:17a mansion
00:20:18of dull
00:20:18red brick
00:20:19there was
00:20:21an earthy
00:20:22savour
00:20:22in the air
00:20:23a chilly
00:20:24bareness
00:20:24in the place
00:20:25which associated
00:20:26itself
00:20:27somehow
00:20:27with too much
00:20:28getting up
00:20:29by candlelight
00:20:30and not
00:20:31too much
00:20:32to eat
00:20:32they went
00:20:35the ghost
00:20:36and Scrooge
00:20:37across the hall
00:20:38to a door
00:20:40at the back
00:20:41of the house
00:20:41it opened
00:20:43before them
00:20:43and disclosed
00:20:44a long
00:20:45bare
00:20:46melancholy
00:20:47room
00:20:48made bare
00:20:48a still
00:20:49by lines
00:20:50of plain deal
00:20:51forms
00:20:51and desks
00:20:52at one
00:20:54of these
00:20:55a lonely
00:20:55boy
00:20:56was reading
00:20:57near a feeble
00:20:57fire
00:20:58and Scrooge
00:20:59sat down
00:21:00upon a form
00:21:00and worked
00:21:01to see his
00:21:02poor forgotten
00:21:03self
00:21:03as he used
00:21:04to be
00:21:05let us see
00:21:08another
00:21:09Christmas
00:21:10although they
00:21:12had but
00:21:12that moment
00:21:13left the school
00:21:14behind them
00:21:14they were now
00:21:15in the busy
00:21:16thoroughfares
00:21:16of his city
00:21:17the ghost
00:21:18stopped
00:21:19at a certain
00:21:20warehouse door
00:21:21and asked Scrooge
00:21:22if he knew it
00:21:23know it
00:21:25said Scrooge
00:21:25was I apprenticed
00:21:27here
00:21:28they went in
00:21:29at sight
00:21:31of an old
00:21:32gentleman
00:21:32in a Welsh wig
00:21:34sitting behind
00:21:35such a high
00:21:36desk
00:21:36that if he had
00:21:37been two inches
00:21:38taller
00:21:38he must have
00:21:39knocked his head
00:21:39against the ceiling
00:21:40Scrooge cried
00:21:42in great excitement
00:21:43why
00:21:44it's old
00:21:45Fezziwig
00:21:46bless his heart
00:21:48it's Fezziwig
00:21:49alive again
00:21:50old Fezziwig
00:21:52laid down
00:21:53his pen
00:21:53and looked up
00:21:54at the clock
00:21:55which pointed
00:21:56to the hour
00:21:56of seven
00:21:57he rubbed
00:21:58his hands
00:21:58adjusted
00:21:59his capacious
00:22:00waistcoat
00:22:01laughed all
00:22:02over himself
00:22:03from his shows
00:22:04to his organ
00:22:04of benevolence
00:22:05and called out
00:22:07in a comfortable
00:22:08oily
00:22:09rich
00:22:09fat
00:22:10jovial voice
00:22:11yo ho there

00:22:14Dick

00:22:19a young man
00:22:20came briskly in
00:22:21accompanied
00:22:22by his fellow
00:22:22apprentice
00:22:23yo ho my boys
00:22:25said Fezziwig

00:22:33cried old
00:22:33Fezziwig
00:22:34with a sharp
00:22:35clap of his
00:22:35hands
00:22:36before a man
00:22:37can say
00:22:37Jack Robinson
00:22:38in came
00:22:40a fiddler
00:22:41with a music
00:22:41book
00:22:42and went up
00:22:42to the lofty
00:22:43desk
00:22:43and made
00:22:44an orchestra
00:22:45of it
00:22:45and tuned
00:22:46like 50
00:22:47stomach aches
00:22:48in came
00:22:49Mrs. Fezziwig
00:22:50one vast
00:22:52substantial
00:22:53smile
00:22:53in came
00:22:55all the young
00:22:56men and women
00:22:57employed in the
00:22:57business
00:22:58in came the
00:22:59housemaid
00:22:59with her
00:23:00cousin
00:23:00the baker
00:23:01in they all
00:23:02came
00:23:02one after
00:23:03another
00:23:04some shyly
00:23:05some boldly
00:23:06some gracefully
00:23:07some awkwardly
00:23:09some pushing
00:23:10some pulling
00:23:10in they all
00:23:12came
00:23:12anyhow
00:23:13and every how
00:23:14there were
00:23:15dances
00:23:16and there were
00:23:17forfeits
00:23:17and more dances
00:23:18and there was cake
00:23:20and there was negus
00:23:21and there was a great
00:23:22piece of cold roast
00:23:23and there was a great
00:23:25piece of cold boiled
00:23:26and there were mince pies
00:23:28and plenty of beer
00:23:29during the whole
00:23:31of this time
00:23:32Scrooge
00:23:32had acted
00:23:33like a man
00:23:34out of his wits
00:23:35his heart
00:23:36and soul
00:23:37were in the scene
00:23:38and with his
00:23:39former self
00:23:40a small matter
00:23:43said the ghost
00:23:44to make these
00:23:45silly folks
00:23:45so full
00:23:46of gratitude
00:23:47small
00:23:49echoed Scrooge
00:23:50the spirit
00:23:52signed
00:23:52to him
00:23:53to listen
00:23:54to the two
00:23:54apprentices
00:23:55who were pouring
00:23:56out their hearts
00:23:57in praise of Fezziwig
00:23:58and when he had
00:24:00done so
00:24:00said
00:24:01why
00:24:02is it not
00:24:04he has spent
00:24:06but a few pounds
00:24:07of your mortal money
00:24:09three or four
00:24:11perhaps
00:24:11it isn't
00:24:13that
00:24:14said Scrooge
00:24:15heated by the remark
00:24:16and speaking
00:24:17unconsciously
00:24:18like his former
00:24:19not his latter self
00:24:20it isn't
00:24:22that spirit
00:24:23he
00:24:24has the power
00:24:25to render us
00:24:26happy or unhappy
00:24:28to make our service
00:24:29light or burdensome
00:24:31a pleasure
00:24:32or a toil
00:24:33the happiness
00:24:34he gives
00:24:35is quite as great
00:24:36as if it cost
00:24:37a fortune
00:24:38he felt
00:24:40the spirit's glance
00:24:41and stopped
00:24:43what is the matter
00:24:46asked the ghost
00:24:47nothing in particular
00:24:50said Scrooge
00:24:51something
00:24:52I think
00:24:53the ghost
00:24:54insisted
00:24:55no
00:24:56said Scrooge
00:24:57no
00:24:58I should like
00:25:00to be able
00:25:01to say a word
00:25:01or two
00:25:02to my clerk
00:25:03just now
00:25:04that's all
00:25:06his former self
00:25:09turned down
00:25:10the lamps
00:25:11as he gave
00:25:11utterance
00:25:12to the wish
00:25:13and Scrooge
00:25:15and Scrooge
00:25:15and the ghost
00:25:16again
00:25:16stood side
00:25:18by side
00:25:19in the open air
00:25:20my time
00:25:21grows short
00:25:22observed the spirit
00:25:24quick
00:25:25this was not
00:25:27addressed to Scrooge
00:25:27or to anyone
00:25:28whom he could see
00:25:29but it produced
00:25:30an immediate effect
00:25:31for again
00:25:32Scrooge
00:25:32saw himself
00:25:34he was older now
00:25:36a man
00:25:36in the prime
00:25:37of life
00:25:38his face
00:25:39had not
00:25:39the harsh
00:25:40and rigid
00:25:41lines
00:25:41of later
00:25:42years
00:25:42but it had
00:25:43begun to wear
00:25:44the signs
00:25:44of care
00:25:45and avarice
00:25:46he was not
00:25:48alone
00:25:48but sat
00:25:49by the side
00:25:50of a fair
00:25:51young girl
00:25:51in a morning
00:25:52dress
00:25:53in whose eyes
00:25:55there were tears
00:25:55which sparkled
00:25:57in the light
00:25:58that shone
00:25:58out of the ghost
00:25:59of Christmas past
00:26:00it matters
00:26:03little
00:26:03she said softly
00:26:05to you
00:26:06very little
00:26:07another idol
00:26:10has displaced
00:26:10me
00:26:11and if it
00:26:13can cheer
00:26:13and comfort
00:26:14you in time
00:26:14to come
00:26:15as I would
00:26:16have tried
00:26:16to do
00:26:17I have no
00:26:18just cause
00:26:19to grieve
00:26:20what idol
00:26:22has displaced
00:26:23you
00:26:23he rejoined
00:26:24a golden
00:26:26one
00:26:27this is
00:26:29the even
00:26:29handed
00:26:30dealing
00:26:30of the world
00:26:31he said
00:26:32there is
00:26:32nothing
00:26:33on which
00:26:33it is
00:26:34so hard
00:26:35as poverty
00:26:35and there
00:26:36is nothing
00:26:37it professes
00:26:37to condemn
00:26:38with such
00:26:38severity
00:26:39as the
00:26:40pursuit
00:26:40of wealth
00:26:41you fear
00:26:44the world
00:26:44too much
00:26:45she answered
00:26:46gently
00:26:47all your
00:26:48other hopes
00:26:49have merged
00:26:50into the hope
00:26:51of being
00:26:51beyond the
00:26:52chance
00:26:52of its
00:26:53sordid
00:26:53reproach
00:26:54I have
00:26:56seen
00:26:56your
00:26:57nobler
00:26:57aspirations
00:26:58fall off
00:26:59one by
00:27:00one
00:27:01until the
00:27:02master
00:27:02passion

00:27:04engrosses
00:27:05you
00:27:05have I
00:27:07not
00:27:07what then
00:27:09he retorted
00:27:10even if I
00:27:11have grown
00:27:11so much
00:27:11wiser
00:27:12what then
00:27:12I'm not
00:27:14changed
00:27:15towards you
00:27:15she shook
00:27:17her head
00:27:17am I
00:27:19our contract
00:27:21is an old
00:27:22one
00:27:22it was
00:27:24made
00:27:24when we
00:27:25were both
00:27:25poor
00:27:25poor
00:27:25and content
00:27:26to be
00:27:26so
00:27:27until
00:27:28in good
00:27:29season
00:27:29we could
00:27:30improve
00:27:30our worldly
00:27:31fortune
00:27:32by our
00:27:32patient
00:27:33industry
00:27:33you are
00:27:35changed

00:27:40I was a
00:27:41boy
00:27:41he said
00:27:42impatiently
00:27:42your own
00:27:44feeling
00:27:45tells you
00:27:45that you
00:27:46are not

00:27:47are
00:27:47she returned
00:27:48I am
00:27:50that which
00:27:52promised happiness
00:27:53when we were
00:27:54one in heart
00:27:55is fraught
00:27:56with misery
00:27:57now that we
00:27:58are two
00:27:58how often
00:28:00and how keenly
00:28:01I have thought
00:28:02of this
00:28:02I will not
00:28:03say
00:28:03it is enough
00:28:05that I have
00:28:05thought of it
00:28:06and can
00:28:08release you
00:28:09he was about
00:28:11to speak
00:28:11but with her
00:28:12head turned
00:28:13from him
00:28:13she resumed
00:28:14the memory
00:28:17of what is

00:28:19me hope

00:28:21in this
00:28:21a very

00:28:23and you
00:28:24will dismiss
00:28:24the recollection
00:28:25of it
00:28:25gladly
00:28:26as an
00:28:27unprofitable
00:28:28dream
00:28:28from which
00:28:29it happened

00:38:03disappointed
00:38:04if it were

00:38:13and bore him
00:38:14off into the

00:38:18his active
00:38:20little crutch
00:38:20was heard
00:38:21upon the floor
00:38:22and back came
00:38:23tiny tim
00:38:23before another

00:38:47ubiquitous
00:38:48young cratchits

00:38:51they soon

00:39:11the cloth was
00:39:12cleared
00:39:12the hearth

00:39:22and a shovel
00:39:23full of chestnuts
00:39:24on the fire

00:39:29a circle
00:39:30meaning half a one
00:39:31and at bob
00:39:32cratchit's elbow

00:39:49said tiny tim
00:39:50the last of all
00:39:52he sat very close

00:40:01in his
00:40:02as if he loved

00:40:25and a crotch
00:40:27without an owner
00:40:28carefully preserved

00:41:50said mrs cratchit

00:41:52long life
00:41:53to him
00:41:54a merry christmas
00:41:55and a happy
00:41:56new year
00:41:56he'll be very
00:41:57merry and very
00:41:58happy i have
00:41:59no doubt
00:41:59the children
00:42:01drank the toast
00:42:02after her
00:42:03it was the first
00:42:06of their proceedings
00:42:06which had no
00:42:08heartiness
00:42:08scrooge was
00:42:10the ogre of the
00:42:11family
00:42:11the mention
00:42:13of his name
00:42:14cast a dark
00:42:15shadow on the
00:42:16party
00:42:16which was not
00:42:18dispelled
00:42:18for a full
00:42:19five minutes
00:42:21by this time
00:42:23it was getting
00:42:24dark
00:42:24and snowing
00:42:26pretty heavily
00:42:27and as scrooge
00:42:28and the spirit
00:42:29went along the
00:42:30streets
00:42:30the brightness
00:42:31of the roaring
00:42:32fires in kitchens
00:42:33parlors and all
00:42:34sorts of rooms
00:42:35was wonderful
00:42:36it was a great
00:42:38surprise to scrooge
00:42:39to hear a hearty
00:42:41laugh
00:42:42it was a much
00:42:43greater surprise
00:42:44to recognize it
00:42:45as his own
00:42:46nephews
00:42:46and to find
00:42:47himself
00:42:48in a bright
00:42:50dry
00:42:51gleaming
00:42:52room
00:42:53with the spirit
00:42:54standing smiling
00:42:56by his side
00:42:56and looking at
00:42:57that same nephew
00:42:58with approving
00:42:59affability
00:43:00laughed scrooge's
00:43:02nephew
00:43:03when scrooge's
00:43:05nephew laughed
00:43:06in this way
00:43:07holding his sides
00:43:08rolling his head
00:43:09and twisting his
00:43:10face into the
00:43:10most extravagant
00:43:12contortions
00:43:12scrooge's niece
00:43:14by marriage
00:43:14laughed as heartily
00:43:16as he
00:43:16and their
00:43:17assembled friends
00:43:18not being a bit
00:43:19behind
00:43:19roared out
00:43:20lustily
00:43:21it was a game
00:43:22called yes and no
00:43:24where scrooge's
00:43:26nephew had to
00:43:26think of something
00:43:27and the rest
00:43:28must find out
00:43:29what
00:43:29he only answering
00:43:30to their questions
00:43:31yes or no
00:43:32as the case was
00:43:33the brisk fire
00:43:35of questioning
00:43:35to which he was
00:43:36exposed
00:43:37elicited from him
00:43:39that he was
00:43:41thinking of an
00:43:42animal
00:43:42a live animal
00:43:44rather a
00:43:45disagreeable animal
00:43:46a savage animal
00:43:48an animal that
00:43:49growled and grunted
00:43:50sometimes
00:43:51and talked
00:43:52sometimes
00:43:53and lived in
00:43:55London
00:43:55and walked about
00:43:57the streets
00:43:58and wasn't made
00:43:59a show of
00:43:59wasn't led by
00:44:00anybody
00:44:01and didn't live
00:44:02in a menagerie
00:44:03and was never
00:44:04killed in a market
00:44:05and was not
00:44:07a horse
00:44:08or an ass
00:44:09or a cow
00:44:10or a bull
00:44:11or a tiger
00:44:12or a dog
00:44:13or a pig
00:44:15or a cat
00:44:16or a bear
00:44:18at every fresh
00:44:20question that was
00:44:21put to him
00:44:21this nephew
00:44:22burst into a fresh
00:44:23roar of laughter
00:44:24and was so
00:44:25inexpressibly tickled
00:44:26that he was obliged
00:44:27to get up
00:44:28off the sofa
00:44:29and stamp
00:44:30at last
00:44:32the plump
00:44:33sister
00:44:34falling into a
00:44:35similar state
00:44:35cried out
00:44:36I have found
00:44:37it out
00:44:38I know what it is
00:44:39Fred
00:44:39I know what it is
00:44:40what is it
00:44:42cried Fred
00:44:43it's your
00:44:44uncle Scrooge
00:44:45which he certainly
00:44:47was
00:44:47well he's given
00:44:49us plenty of
00:44:50merriment I'm sure
00:44:51said Fred
00:44:52and it would be
00:44:53ungrateful not to
00:44:54drink his health
00:44:55here is a glass
00:44:57of mulled wine
00:44:57ready for the
00:44:58moment
00:44:58I say
00:45:00uncle Scrooge
00:45:01well
00:45:02uncle Scrooge
00:45:03they cried
00:45:04and Merry Christmas
00:45:05and a Happy New Year
00:45:06to the old man
00:45:07whatever he is
00:45:08said Scrooge's nephew
00:45:09he wouldn't take it
00:45:10from me
00:45:11but may he have it
00:45:12nevertheless
00:45:13uncle Scrooge
00:45:14uncle Scrooge
00:45:17had imperceptibly
00:45:18become so gay
00:45:19and light of heart
00:45:20that he would have
00:45:21pledged the
00:45:22unconscious company
00:45:23in return
00:45:23and thanked them
00:45:24in an inaudible speech
00:45:26if the ghost
00:45:27had given him time
00:45:28but the whole scene
00:45:31passed off
00:45:32in the breath
00:45:32of the last word
00:45:33spoken by his nephew
00:45:34and he and the spirit
00:45:36were once again
00:45:38upon their travels
00:45:38it was a long night
00:45:41if it were only a night
00:45:43but Scrooge
00:45:44had his doubts
00:45:45of this
00:45:45because the Christmas
00:45:47holidays appeared
00:45:48to be condensed
00:45:50into the space
00:45:51of time
00:45:52they passed together
00:45:53it was strange too
00:45:56that while Scrooge
00:45:57remained unaltered
00:45:59in his outward form
00:46:00the ghost
00:46:02grew older
00:46:04clearly older
00:46:07our spirits' lives
00:46:09so short
00:46:10asked Scrooge
00:46:11my life upon this globe
00:46:14is very brief
00:46:16replied the ghost
00:46:17it ends
00:46:18tonight
00:46:19from the foldings
00:46:21of its robe
00:46:22it brought
00:46:23two
00:46:24children
00:46:25wretched
00:46:27wretched
00:46:27abject
00:46:28frightful
00:46:29hideous
00:46:30miserable
00:46:31they knelt down
00:46:33at its feet
00:46:34and clung
00:46:36upon the outside
00:46:37of its garment
00:46:37oh man
00:46:40look here
00:46:41look
00:46:43look
00:46:44down here
00:46:45exclaimed the ghost
00:46:46they were a boy
00:46:48and a girl
00:46:49yellow
00:46:51meagre
00:46:52bragged
00:46:54scowling
00:46:55wolfish
00:46:55but prostrate
00:46:57too
00:46:57in their humility
00:46:58Scrooge
00:47:00started back
00:47:01appalled
00:47:02having them
00:47:04shown to him
00:47:05in this way
00:47:06he tried to say
00:47:06they were fine children
00:47:08but the words
00:47:09choked themselves
00:47:10rather than be parties
00:47:11to a lie
00:47:12of such enormous magnitude
00:47:13spirit
00:47:15are they yours
00:47:17Scrooge
00:47:18could say no more
00:47:18they are mans
00:47:21said the spirit
00:47:22looking down upon them
00:47:23and they cling to me
00:47:26appealing
00:47:26from their fathers
00:47:28this boy
00:47:29is ignorance
00:47:31this girl
00:47:32is want
00:47:33are there no prisons
00:47:35said the spirit
00:47:36turning on him
00:47:37for the last time
00:47:38with his own words
00:47:39are there no workhouses
00:47:40the bell struck twelve
00:47:45Scrooge
00:47:48looked about him
00:47:49for the ghost
00:47:50and saw it not
00:47:52as the last stroke
00:47:56ceased to vibrate
00:47:58he remembered
00:48:01the prediction
00:48:01of old Jacob Marley
00:48:03and lifting up
00:48:06his eyes
00:48:07beheld
00:48:08a solemn
00:48:09phantom
00:48:09draped
00:48:11and hooded
00:48:12coming
00:48:14like a mist
00:48:15along the ground
00:48:17towards him
00:48:19the phantom
00:48:36slowly
00:48:36gravely
00:48:38silently
00:48:39approached
00:48:40when it came
00:48:42Scrooge bent down
00:48:44upon his knee
00:48:45for in the very air
00:48:46through which
00:48:47this spirit moved
00:48:48it seemed to scatter
00:48:49gloom
00:48:50and misery
00:48:51it was shrouded
00:48:54in a deep
00:48:54black garment
00:48:56which concealed
00:48:57its head
00:48:58its face
00:48:59its form
00:48:59and left nothing
00:49:01of it visible
00:49:01save one
00:49:03outstretched
00:49:05hand
00:49:06I am in the presence
00:49:09of the ghost
00:49:10of Christmas
00:49:11yet to come
00:49:12said Scrooge
00:49:13the spirit
00:49:14answered not
00:49:15but pointed
00:49:16downward
00:49:17with its hand
00:49:18although
00:49:20well used
00:49:21to ghostly
00:49:21company
00:49:22by this time
00:49:22Scrooge
00:49:23feared the silent
00:49:24shape so much
00:49:25that his legs
00:49:27trembled beneath him
00:49:28and he found
00:49:29that he could
00:49:30hardly stand
00:49:31when he prepared
00:49:32to follow it
00:49:32they scarcely
00:49:35seemed
00:49:35to enter
00:49:36the city
00:49:37for the city
00:49:39rather seemed
00:49:39to spring up
00:49:40about them
00:49:41and encompass
00:49:42them
00:49:42of its own act
00:49:43but there they were
00:49:45in the heart of it
00:49:46on change
00:49:48amongst the merchants
00:49:49who hurried up
00:49:50and down
00:49:51and chinked the money
00:49:52in their pockets
00:49:53and conversed
00:49:54in groups
00:49:54and looked at
00:49:55their watches
00:49:55and trifled
00:49:56thoughtfully
00:49:57with their great
00:49:58gold seals
00:49:59and so forth
00:49:59as Scrooge
00:50:00had seen them often
00:50:01the spirit
00:50:03stopped beside
00:50:03one little knot
00:50:05of businessmen
00:50:06no
00:50:07said a great
00:50:08fat man
00:50:08with a monstrous
00:50:09chin
00:50:10I don't know
00:50:11much about it
00:50:12either way
00:50:13I only know
00:50:14he's dead
00:50:14when did he die
00:50:17inquired another
00:50:18last night
00:50:19I believe
00:50:19what has he done
00:50:21with his money
00:50:22asked a red
00:50:23faced gentleman
00:50:24with a pendulous
00:50:25excrescence
00:50:26on the end
00:50:26of his nose
00:50:27that shook
00:50:28like the gills
00:50:29of a turkey cock
00:50:30oh I haven't heard
00:50:32said the man
00:50:33with the large chin
00:50:34yawning again
00:50:35left it to his company
00:50:37perhaps
00:50:37he hasn't left it
00:50:38to me
00:50:38that's all I know
00:50:39this pleasantry
00:50:41was received
00:50:42with a general laugh
00:50:43it's likely
00:50:44to be a very
00:50:45cheap funeral
00:50:46said the same speaker
00:50:47for upon my life
00:50:49I don't know
00:50:49of anybody
00:50:50to go to it
00:50:51suppose we make up
00:50:53a party
00:50:53and volunteer
00:50:54I don't mind
00:50:57going
00:50:57of lunches
00:50:58provided
00:50:58observed the gentleman
00:51:00with the excrescence
00:51:01on his nose
00:51:02but I must
00:51:03be fed
00:51:04another laugh
00:51:06well I am
00:51:09the most disinterested
00:51:10among you
00:51:10after all
00:51:11said the first speaker
00:51:12for I never wear
00:51:13black gloves
00:51:13and I never eat lunch
00:51:14but I'll offer to go
00:51:16if anybody else will
00:51:17when I come
00:51:18to think of it
00:51:19I'm not at all sure
00:51:20that I wasn't
00:51:21his most particular
00:51:22friend
00:51:23for we used to
00:51:23stop and speak
00:51:25whenever we met
00:51:26bye bye
00:51:27speakers and listeners
00:51:29strolled away
00:51:30and mixed
00:51:31with other groups
00:51:32Scrooge knew the men
00:51:33and looked towards
00:51:35the spirit
00:51:35for an explanation
00:51:37they left the busy scene
00:51:40and went into
00:51:42an obscure part
00:51:43of the town
00:51:43where Scrooge
00:51:44had never penetrated
00:51:45before
00:51:46although he recognised
00:51:47its situation
00:51:48and its bad repute
00:51:49the ways were foul
00:51:52and narrow
00:51:52the shops and houses
00:51:54wretched
00:51:55the people
00:51:56half naked
00:51:57drunken
00:51:57slipshod
00:51:58ugly
00:51:59far in this den
00:52:01of infamous resort
00:52:03there was a low-browed
00:52:04beetling shop
00:52:05below a penthouse roof
00:52:06where iron
00:52:07old rags
00:52:08bottles
00:52:08bones
00:52:09and greasy offal
00:52:10were bought
00:52:10sitting in
00:52:12among the wares
00:52:13he dealt in
00:52:13by a charcoal stove
00:52:15made of old bricks
00:52:16was a grey-haired
00:52:18rascal
00:52:19nearly 70 years
00:52:21of age
00:52:21who had screamed
00:52:22himself
00:52:23from the cold air
00:52:24without
00:52:24by a frowzy
00:52:25curtaining
00:52:26of miscellaneous
00:52:27tatters
00:52:27hung upon a line
00:52:28smoked his pipe
00:52:30and all the luxury
00:52:31of calm retirement
00:52:32Scrooge
00:52:34and the phantom
00:52:35came into the presence
00:52:36of this man
00:52:37just as a woman
00:52:38with a heavy bundle
00:52:40slunk into the shop
00:52:41what do you call this
00:52:42said joe
00:52:43bed curtains
00:52:45ah-ha
00:52:46returned the woman
00:52:47laughing and leaning
00:52:48forward on her
00:52:49crossed arms
00:52:50bed curtains
00:52:52you don't mean to say
00:52:54you took them down
00:52:55rings and all
00:52:56with him lying there
00:52:58said joe
00:52:59yes i do
00:53:00replied the woman
00:53:01by not
00:53:02you were born to make
00:53:04your fortune
00:53:05said joe
00:53:06and you'll certainly
00:53:07do it
00:53:08Scrooge listened
00:53:09to this dialogue
00:53:10in horror
00:53:11laughed the same woman
00:53:13when old joe
00:53:14producing a flannel bag
00:53:16with money in it
00:53:16told out their
00:53:17several gains
00:53:18upon the ground
00:53:19this is the end of it
00:53:21you see
00:53:21he frightened
00:53:23everyone away from him
00:53:24when he was alive
00:53:25to profit us
00:53:26when he was dead
00:53:27ha-ha-ha
00:53:28spirit
00:53:29said Scrooge
00:53:30shuddering from head to foot
00:53:32i see
00:53:33i see
00:53:34the case of this
00:53:36unhappy man
00:53:37might be my own
00:53:38my life tends
00:53:39that way now
00:53:40merciful heaven
00:53:42what is this
00:53:44he recoiled in terror
00:53:46for the scene had changed
00:53:48and now
00:53:50he almost touched
00:53:51a bed
00:53:52a bare
00:53:53uncurtained bed
00:53:55on which
00:53:56beneath a ragged sheet
00:53:58there lay
00:53:59a something
00:54:00covered up
00:54:01which
00:54:02though it was dumb
00:54:03announced itself
00:54:05in awful language
00:54:06spirit
00:54:08he said
00:54:08this is a fearful place
00:54:11in leaving it
00:54:12i shall not leave
00:54:13its lesson
00:54:14trust me
00:54:15let us go
00:54:16still the ghost
00:54:18pointed with an
00:54:20unmoved
00:54:21finger
00:54:21to the head
00:54:23i understand you
00:54:24Scrooge returned
00:54:25and i would do it
00:54:27if i could
00:54:27but i have not
00:54:28the power
00:54:29spirit
00:54:29i have not
00:54:30the power
00:54:31again
00:54:32it seemed to
00:54:33look upon him
00:54:34let me see
00:54:36some tenderness
00:54:37connected with the death
00:54:38said Scrooge
00:54:39or that dark chamber
00:54:40spirit
00:54:41which we left
00:54:42just now
00:54:42will be forever
00:54:44present to me
00:54:45they entered
00:54:46poor bob cratchits house
00:54:48the dwelling
00:54:49he had visited before
00:54:50and found the mother
00:54:52and the children
00:54:53seated round the fire
00:54:54quiet
00:54:56very quiet
00:54:59the noisy little
00:55:00cratchits
00:55:01were still
00:55:01as statues
00:55:02in one corner
00:55:03and sat
00:55:04looking up
00:55:04at peter
00:55:05who had a book
00:55:05before him
00:55:06the mother
00:55:08and her daughters
00:55:09were engaged
00:55:10in sewing
00:55:11but surely
00:55:13they were
00:55:14very quiet
00:55:15and he took
00:55:17a child
00:55:18and set him
00:55:19in the midst
00:55:20of them
00:55:21where had Scrooge
00:55:23heard those words
00:55:24he had not
00:55:26dreamed them
00:55:26the boy
00:55:28must have
00:55:29read them out
00:55:30as he
00:55:30and the spirit
00:55:31crossed the threshold
00:55:32why did he not
00:55:33go on
00:55:33the mother
00:55:35laid her work
00:55:36upon the table
00:55:37and put her hand
00:55:38up to her face
00:55:39the colour
00:55:40hurts my eyes
00:55:41she said
00:55:42the colour
00:55:44oh poor
00:55:47tiny Tim
00:55:48they're better
00:55:49now again
00:55:50said cratchit's wife
00:55:51it makes them
00:55:52weak by candlelight
00:55:53and i wouldn't
00:55:54show weak eyes
00:55:54to your father
00:55:55when he comes
00:55:56home for the world
00:55:57it must be
00:55:58near his time
00:55:59past it rather
00:56:01peter answered
00:56:01shutting up his book
00:56:03but i think
00:56:04he's walked
00:56:04a little slower
00:56:05than he used
00:56:06these few
00:56:06last evenings
00:56:07mother
00:56:07they were very
00:56:09quiet again
00:56:10at last
00:56:12she said
00:56:12and in a
00:56:13steady
00:56:14cheerful voice

00:56:15faulted once
00:56:16i have known
00:56:19him walk

00:56:28and so have
00:56:29i cried
00:56:29peter
00:56:30often
00:56:31and so
00:56:32have i
00:56:32exclaimed
00:56:33another
00:56:33so at all
00:56:35but he was
00:56:36very light
00:56:37to carry
00:56:37she resumed
00:56:38intent upon
00:56:39her work
00:56:39and his father
00:56:41loved him
00:56:41so
00:56:42that it
00:56:42was no
00:56:43trouble
00:56:43no trouble
00:56:44when there
00:56:46is your father
00:56:46at the door
00:56:47she hurried out
00:56:49to meet him
00:56:50and little bob
00:56:51in his comforter
00:56:52he had need of it

00:56:59who should
00:56:59help him
00:57:00to it
00:57:00most
00:57:00then the two

00:57:07a little
00:57:07cheek
00:57:08against his
00:57:09face

00:57:18family
00:57:18he looked at
00:57:20the work

00:57:59he and his
