The High Court has overturned a lower court's decision to deny Sydney CBD business owners millions of dollars in compensation over the light rail delays. The decision has cleared the way for traders to now seek compensation over the problem-plagued project.

00:10Finally, finally, we got justice after many, many years.
00:17Angela Vithorkas walked away from her George Street cafe in 2018
00:22after the dust, noise and delays in building the light rail project
00:27drove customers away.
00:29She led a $400 million class action in the Supreme Court in 2023
00:33winning $4 million for her business from the NSW Government.
00:37But that was overturned.
00:39The appeal court finding the project was protected from liability.
00:43We were persecuted by the Liberal Government,
00:46then the Labor Government who promised to support us
00:50and totally turned their back on us.
00:53The claimants took their case to the High Court.
00:56Today, it's ruled Transport for NSW failed to minimise interference to businesses
01:02and they are liable.
01:04The ruling means that 300 other businesses that signed up to the class action
01:08will now finally claim compensation.
01:10But the exact amount is still yet to be worked out.
01:13And there's really nowhere for them to go except to split hairs over a few dollars now.
