00:00I pulled up here with the truck and they're just laying there looking at me
00:08like it's another day and that's not typical deer behavior. Well because you
00:13don't have an AIS to cry can't let you go back out on the water. Are you serious?
00:16Once the animal is netted I'm getting out of the helicopter getting to the
00:21animal to where it's you know safe for the animal as well as us. Check fishing
00:26licenses real quick. California. We don't honor California. I don't then I'm fishing
00:32without a license. Nevada a land of extremes from the strip to the summits
00:43it's wild country home to more than 900 species and a way of life worth
00:50protecting preserved for the people and the wildlife that call it home. One team

02:40right on sounds good did you guys find your deer
02:47okay sounds good my name is Matthew Jeffress I'm a game biologist out of the eastern region for Nevada Department of Wildlife
02:54today I'm working with the
03:01capture crew Quicksilver Air
03:02we work with them we've been working with them for for several years now on a lot of our big game capture work and we're going to be targeting Rocky Mountain elk
03:08we're going to be targeting mule deer and we're going to be targeting mule deer and we're going to be targeting mule deer and we're going to be targeting California bighorn sheep on the snowstorm mountains in western Elko County
03:15it was like a thing they're working from them were going to be a lot of mule deer in the other deer center that's like it was out there working on that other deer
03:22right
03:23there's a lot of deer going to be targeting mule deer and we're going to be targeting mule deer and we're going to be targeting bighorn sheep on the snowstorm mountains in
03:29western Elko County
03:31it was like I get a days out there working on the other deer right
03:34oh okay
03:35yeah
03:36yeah
03:37They go out, they fly around, they're really good at what they're doing, locating wildlife.
03:42They're looking for bighorn sheep from known locations and also taking advantage of just a random chance of finding a bighorn sheep that may be moving from one area to another.
03:52And they're out catching animals and now I'm just waiting for them to come back.
04:00With the bighorn sheep, it's a continuation of a disease project.
04:04We've monitored these sheep since 2011 when we had a summer die-off.
04:07There was contact between domestic sheep and bighorn sheep.
04:10We've maintained a good number of colors on these animals and we're just looking at disease profiles and interactions among sub-herds.
04:34I'm not seeing a bighorn sheep but I'm not seeing a bighorn sheep or harken sheep.
04:41My name is Harley Cushman. I work for Quicksilver Air. Once the animal is netted, generally I'm getting out of the helicopter.
05:01out of the helicopter getting to the animal controlling it on the ground to where it's you
05:08know safe for for the animal as well as us and then at that point we're untangling the animal
05:14out of the net and we have some hobble straps that we take and tether the back and front legs
05:20together so as they can't kick us while we're processing them and then you know after they're
05:27hobbled up we usually blindfold them typically they have a collar a tracking collar they want
05:32put on them along with blood samples they want taking ear tag aging measurements on some we try
05:41to get in there and get it done quick so they spend as little time as possible on the ground
05:50yeah they're able to get all three rams so we're definitely going to transition over to
05:54to elk and grab a few more deer
06:11my name's perry miller i've been a game warden just a little over two years i'm starting my third year
06:17right now still fairly new at it but i enjoy every minute of it from the quotes to especially
06:24hunting patrol during the winter time i mean hunting that's my bread and butter it's what i grew
06:29up doing i kind of always wanted to do this job
06:34so we're we just pulled in on the willow beach road this is the access road to willow beach in the
06:41lake mead national recreation area as soon as we pull up and go around the corner we'll be able to
06:46start seeing fishermen and everything like that so hopefully everybody's playing by the rules today
06:54come on
07:01morning guys hey morton check licenses real quick
07:05i've got two big ones up here this morning awesome me two one one thank you very much thank you
07:13yeah let's see the fish real quick yeah
07:16It's good to see some of the big ones are still in here.
07:21Yeah, I know.
07:24Yeah, awesome.
07:25All right, you guys have a good morning.
07:34Hey, look.
07:35Two.
07:36The little guys it looks like.
07:37Perfect taco size.
07:39Game warden checked fishing licenses real quick.
07:43Thank you very much.
07:45How far north are you from?
07:47Calgary.
07:48Calgary?
07:49Yeah.
07:50I figured the accent and your what waiting.
07:52So this is summer water to you.
07:54Oh, yeah, this is bathtub.
07:55Yep, awesome.
07:56All right, you have a good day, sir.
08:03Any luck this morning?
08:04Nothing yet?
08:06Thank you very much.
08:08Yep, you have a good morning.
08:12Check fishing license real quick.
08:14I don't have one.
08:15You don't have one?
08:16No.
08:24We hit our target on California Bickhorn sheep.
08:31We were able to get our deer colored.
08:33So now the crew's moving over east of where we were this morning, about 15 miles east, still part of the Snowstorm Mountains and going for elk.
08:40We have a problem with just random spring, summer elk mortality, both sexes, bulls and cows.
08:49It's a pretty high mortality rate.
08:51Every year since 2015, we've had anywhere between 20 and 50 percent mortality on our collared cows.
08:58So it's more than just a random chance at this point, and we've really been putting everything into figuring out what's actually affecting these elk and the causal agent.
09:07Elk, they're big critters.
09:17They got big long necks, big heads.
09:19That net gunner, you know, he has a split second.
09:22We usually try to put the net on them when they're turning.
09:25You know, you put that net on them when they're turning, and there's a lot better chance of their legs get tangled up in the net.
09:32And then as they're turning, they'll lay down right on their side.
09:36Snow is ideal for all animals, you know.
09:39Something to cushion them when they fall.
09:41They're not running as fast.
09:43You know, our goal is really to do this as safe for the animal, causing as little as harm as we can.
09:55The goal is, you know, the animals and the people walk away at the end of the day.
10:00And as well as gaining valuable information that Endow can study and hopefully improve, you know, the habitat for all the animals.
10:11Rocker, you pull.
10:25Let's get this how we're worth right now, huh?
10:43Offer in Just get this how we're worth right now.
10:50Now,
10:53Then I've got to lube that deal up to go down her throat.
11:03The bolus, that big magnet looking device put down the elk's throat, sits in their rumen
11:10and then that communicates with the caller and if the elk dies and stops moving for just
11:16a few minutes, we'll get communication from that caller to a satellite and then directly
11:21to our cell phones and texts and then email as well.
11:25And then every spring we have a team of biologists ready to go out so we have a pretty quick response
11:30time, anywhere from three to four hours on getting on these elk and collecting fresh samples
11:36and really trying to get at the bottom of what's going on.
11:43And then they'll collect a suite of samples, so blood sample, we can look at trace minerals
11:48and any kind of pathogens that the animals have been exposed to.
11:52And then we'll be collecting nasal swabs or pharyngeal swabs on some, and then they'll
11:57get ear tags in their ears so we can identify them from a distance, from the ground and from
12:02the air when we're doing aerial surveys.
12:04And then lastly, they'll get the radio caller attached to the animal's neck and then they're
12:11released as quick as possible at the same place where they're captured so they're not
12:14moved away from their home range and they know where they're at and then they're off to doing
12:19what they're doing and we get to learn more about each of the species.
12:22Check fishing licence real quick.
12:23I don't have one.
12:24You don't have one?
12:25No.
12:26No.
12:27Okay.
12:28Do you have a driver's licence?
12:29No.
12:30I do.
12:31All right.
12:32Cool.
12:33Just hang out for me right here.
12:34Fishing.
12:35Okay.
12:36I don't have one.
12:37You don't have one?
12:38No.
12:39Okay.
12:40Do you have a driver's licence?
12:54Yeah, I do.
12:56Cool.
12:57Just hang out for me right here.
13:00Fishing contact in Willow Beach, 2729 and a Calcumy check on a mail out of Nevada.
13:06The gentleman's fishing.
13:08He has a line in the water.
13:09Said he doesn't have a fishing licence.
13:11So up front with me, but I want to make sure all the stuff that's going on with him first
13:16before I go any farther into it.
13:183409, Reno and Wilson, through all systems with a revoked Class C, showing negative and
13:25countermise negative licence issues.
13:2810-4, 10-6.
13:31He got a citation, and then we're also going to have a discussion as driver's licence is revoked.
13:37So I'm going to want to figure out how he got down here.
13:40Gabriel, come up here.
13:47Okay.
13:48So you are receiving a citation for not having a licence, Gabe.
13:50Yeah.
13:51Do you know you need one?
13:52Yeah, I do know.
13:53Okay.
13:54So the other question I have, how did you get down here?
13:57Um, look over there.
13:59Did you drive it?
14:00No, I didn't drive.
14:01You didn't drive?
14:02Okay.
14:03You know your licence is suspended, right?
14:04I know that.
14:05Okay.
14:06All right.
14:07Just making sure you're not driving.
14:08Okay.
14:09That's what it comes out to.
14:10Damn.
14:11I need your signature there.
14:12Just promise to take care of it.
14:13It's not an admission of guilt.
14:14If I bought the gear pass, would it drop the fine or no?
14:17Um, I can't speak for the judge.
14:19A lot of people that get these licences, they do buy it, and then go to the court with
14:23that.
14:24So there's your copy, sir.
14:26Sure.
14:27And your driver's licence back.
14:28All right.
14:29Any questions?
14:30Nope.
14:31That's it.
14:32All right.
14:33You're free to go, sir.
14:34He straight up told me he didn't have a licence, and without that licence, he's not paying to
14:37the store.
14:38So he decided not to buy it.
14:40So he took a chance, and he got caught today.
14:43So that's how it goes.
14:46It's kind of interesting the way that Lake Mead, Lake Mojave, and the Colorado River
14:50work.
14:51We have shared jurisdiction with Arizona on it.
14:54So Arizona can enforce fishing laws on the Nevada side.
14:57We can enforce fishing laws on the Arizona side.
15:00That's definitely a unique patrol area that we have, where anybody, they have an Arizona
15:05license they can fish on either side of the shore.
15:07They have a Nevada license they can fish on any side of the shore.
15:13Morning, guys.
15:14Game Warden.
15:15Check fishing licenses real quick.
15:17Bought it online yesterday.
15:18Can I show you the email or confirmation?
15:20Yep.
15:21California.
15:22Like I said, you guys honor California.
15:23We don't honor California.
15:25We don't?
15:26No.
15:27Not here.
15:28Then I'm fishing without a licence.
15:30Two days ago, we rented the boat.
15:31They said you can go online.
15:32Renew your California.
15:33We don't honor California.
15:34We don't?
15:35We don't honor California.
15:36We don't?
15:37No.
15:38Not here.
15:39Then I'm fishing without a licence.
15:40Two days ago, we rented the boat.
15:41They said you can go online, renew your California license, or get a Nevada or Arizona license.
15:42No.
15:43You can Arizona or Nevada is good, not California.
15:44There's no California shoreline on Lake Mead or Lake Mojave.
15:45What do you guys got your idea?
15:46Yeah.
15:47We don't honor California.
15:48We don't honor California.
15:49We don't?
15:50No.
15:51Not here.
15:52Then I'm fishing without a licence.
15:53Two days ago, we rented the boat.
15:54They said you can go online, renew your California license, or get a Nevada or Arizona license.
16:03No.
16:04You can Arizona or Nevada is good, not California.
16:07There's no California shoreline on Lake Mead or Lake Mojave.
16:10What, have you guys got your IDs on you?
16:12Yeah.
16:16Fishing contact, Willow Beach, 227-29, and Calchemy Chucks on two males out of California.
16:24So they don't have Nevada or Arizona fishing licenses.
16:29They were told by the marina guys that their California fishing license would be good,
16:34which is not the case.
16:3510-4, 10-6.
16:36All right, guys.
16:37You said you renewed your California ones, right?
16:38Yeah.
16:39This is from two days ago when I just renewed it.
16:40Okay.
16:41And then yours is the same?
16:42Yeah.
16:43Why would this guy tell us?
16:44I don't know.
16:45The marina did change ownership before.
16:46They used to sell Arizona licenses down here.
16:48They used to.
16:49Hey, guys, hang out at my tailgate for me.
16:50Okay.
16:51All right, guys.
16:52So here's what's happening.
16:53You are getting citations for fishing without the licenses, okay?
16:54Yeah.
16:55Go fishing somewhere.
16:56You got to know the regulations.
16:57I know they...
16:58You got to be able to depend on the people that run the marina when you're in the marina.
16:59Okay.
17:00Okay.
17:01And then yours is the same?
17:02Yeah.
17:03Why would this guy tell us?
17:04I don't know.
17:05The marina did change ownership before.
17:06They used to sell Arizona licenses down here.
17:07They used to.
17:08Hey, guys.
17:09Hang out at my tailgate for me.
17:10Okay.
17:11All right, guys.
17:12So here's what's happening.
17:13You are getting citations for fishing without the licenses, okay?
17:16Yeah.
17:17Go fishing somewhere.
17:18You got to know the regulations.
17:19I know they...
17:20You got to be able to depend on the people that run the marina when you're a stranger
17:24in town.
17:25Right.
17:26But they're not the ones fishing.
17:27Ultimately, responsible, it's you, correct?
17:28Yeah.
17:29Yeah.
17:30I'm not arguing with you.
17:31Okay.
17:32I understand where you're coming from.
17:33Yep.
17:34So what's the rule of looking at the fact that we renewed our licenses from California
17:37two days ago?
17:38What was the purpose of all that?
17:40The purpose of that was I wanted to see if you were lying to me or not.
17:44So it's going to be the same for both of you except the upper portion, okay?
17:47Yep.
17:48And I need your signatures.
17:49It's not an admission of guilt.
17:50It's a promise to contact the court.
17:51Well, maybe you could put on there that they claim they were misinformed by the marina
17:55so that if we decide to claim this in court, we can do that.
18:00I'll add that on there for you that we had California licenses.
18:03There's your guys' licenses back.
18:05All right.
18:06There's your guys' copies.
18:07You have any questions for me?
18:08Yeah.
18:09Thanks.
18:10When you started to hand our licenses back to them, thinking about just letting it go
18:17as a warning.
18:18I was never handing your licenses back to you when I was looking at your phones.
18:20It seemed like you were handing it back to me.
18:22No.
18:23All right.
18:24All right.
18:25I'm going to go over and talk to the people in the marina and tell them to quit drumming
18:28up business for you guys by giving bad information.
18:33Because I'm going to go say stuff.
18:34Okay.
18:35You didn't say something.
18:36I don't want any problems down there.
18:37No, no, no.
18:38You're not going to have any problems.
18:39Right.
18:40You're not going to have any problems.
18:41You're not going to have any problems.
18:42Because there have been lots of people with bad information.
18:44Yeah.
18:45They're giving bad information in on this podcast.
18:47Yep.
18:48No, I understand.
18:49But like I said, too, it's on you guys, ultimately.
18:51Oh, I'm not arguing.
18:52I'm not arguing with you.
18:53Okay.
18:54No, I understand.
18:55You too, sir.
19:03That was an interesting one.
19:05Usually I get that quite a bit.
19:07People asking if a California license is good.
19:09That was the most kickback I've ever had from people, though.
19:28I've got some elk meat from a case that we're going to take down to the processor
19:31that we usually take all of our meat to here at Elko.
19:35It came from a case from back in November this year.
19:38Two 40-year-old individuals ended up killing a bull elk for their 82-year-old dad.
19:44It was on their 82-year-old dad's elk tag.
19:46So neither of those guys had tags for themselves.
19:49So it ended up being an unlawful harvest of a big-game mammal without a valid tag,
19:54which is a felony in the state of Nevada.
19:56So we'll take this meat down to the processor.
19:59We'll get it processed.
20:00And then once we get a conviction on the case, we'll take that meat and we'll donate it to the families in need,
20:06or they will go to feed the homeless so the meat doesn't get wasted.
20:10And we're going to get all the meat that are in these bags, pull it inside, and once it thaws out,
20:16then they'll be able to get everything processed for us.
20:20Whatever else, you want me to cut this tag off of that?
20:23Yeah.
20:24Alex, if you want that, you can take that thing.
20:28Like I said, it's been in the freezer, so it's all still pretty frozen.
20:33So we'll get what we can out of it, Alex.
20:36That's good.
20:37Appreciate it.
20:38Thanks.
20:39Have a good one.
20:40You too.
20:41In a case like this, it's very important to try to make sure that none of that meat gets wasted.
20:51It's important that animal gets used the way that it's supposed to.
20:58This is Nick.
21:00How's it going?
21:01Not too bad.
21:02How are you?
21:03Doing good.
21:04Doing good.
21:05Hey, I got a report on a person feeding deer.
21:08Oh, really?
21:09Where at?
21:10Spring Valley Parkway.
21:12Spring Valley Parkway.
21:13We'll head out to Spring Creek and run around and talk to some people that are feeding deer.
21:19Okay, buddy.
21:21All right.
21:22Yep.
21:23Not a problem.
21:24Okay.
21:25Bye.
21:26In the state of Nevada, it's illegal to feed deer.
21:27It congregates deer, brings them within closer contact with each other.
21:30So disease transmission between animals increases, brings predators down in.
21:35You know, the lions, coyotes, things like that will follow the deer around.
21:39And it just kind of creates more of a public safety problem.
21:43By people feeding them, these animals just get used to humans.
21:46They get habituated to humans and human activity and coming in and around people's houses and things like that.
21:54And it creates more of a problem for the deer and for the people.
21:59If people would just leave them alone, let them be wild, those deer would kind of move through the area.
22:04So people that are doing the stuff specifically to feed wildlife because they think they're helping, those are the ones that we want to curb the problem.
22:16They were feeding deer in the past.
22:19I don't know if they're feeding deer anymore or not, but these guys had little grain buckets that they'd fill up and they would take out there and strategically put them out there in the yard underneath the trees for the deer.
22:33I dig there and I can see a whole bunch of them in that backyard.
22:43There's a whole bunch of them laying in the front yard too.
22:48You can kind of see the hay that's out here on the ground and there's hay out here.
22:55I think I'm going to go find out what it is that they're doing with the hay if they're actually feeding their horses or how it is that they're dropping hay so strategically considering their horses are in some stalls on that side of the barn.
23:11You can see a bunch of the hay kicked out right out here and clear out the driveway, some back over there, some up there by the trees.
23:20And I mean, you can see where the hay is all behind there.
23:23And I mean, if they were just coming out and going down alongside the barn to feed the horses or coming out to go feed the horse that's back behind and they were dropping hay right there.
23:34I'm not going to say that that's intentionally feeding deer, but when it's kicked out in all these spots out here, you can definitely tell that, you know, he's kicking, kicking hay out for the deer.
23:45That trail right there.
23:47All the deer poop on it.
23:51I mean, it goes right back into where the horses are at, so.
23:57How are you?
24:09How are you?
24:10Nick Brunson.
24:11Hi, Nick.
24:12I wanted to come by.
24:13I wanted to find out the hay that you guys have down out over there.
24:18Are you guys setting that out for the deer?
24:20Well, we sweep up the barn and throw it out there.
24:23Why is there a problem?
24:24Why is there a problem?
24:37The hay that you guys have down out over there, are you guys setting that out for the deer?
24:42Well, we sweep up the barn and throw it out there.
24:45Why is there a problem?
24:46Yeah, try not to.
24:47Why is there a problem?
24:49It's just, it'd be, it'd fall under intentional feeding a big aim.
24:53And that's a violation of the law.
24:55Really?
24:56Yeah.
24:57If you guys are feeding your horses and some of it ends up dropping out as you're going to throw it to the horses, that's a different story.
25:02Yeah.
25:03Okay.
25:04But try not to intentionally put hay out for them.
25:08Okay.
25:09Just keep that in mind.
25:10Are there territories or places where this is against the law and places that aren't?
25:16It pretty much is.
25:18I've got a sheet that I can show you all the stuff where it says the specifics on it.
25:24I can show you what this is.
25:26I mean, this is an official written warning for feeding wildlife.
25:30Okay.
25:31But basically it tells you, you know, a person shall not intentionally feed big gay mammals.
25:35Okay.
25:36It doesn't include incidental or unintentional feeding, like I say.
25:40But when you're sweeping the stuff out into a little spot out there for the deer.
25:45Yeah.
25:46Then that becomes intentional.
25:47Well, when we do, when we put it out front, we know the horses aren't going to get it unless they go out front.
25:51Right.
25:52And they don't do that all the time.
25:53So the deer will pick up that, that hay that swept off the floors and stuff.
25:58Right.
25:59Okay.
26:00And basically the biggest reasons feeding wildlife is prohibited.
26:03It acclimates the animals to the humans.
26:05It accustoms the animals to roadways.
26:07So, you know, they could potentially get hit by vehicle, you know, endangering people and themselves.
26:12Foraging habits are reduced and disease transmission between animals can actually be increased.
26:18Attracting predators, you know, with the deer increasingly coming into a certain food source,
26:24it could attract predators to come into that same area.
26:28So, you know, it would, it would in turn affect your horses, you, your wife, little dogs, cats, anything like that.
26:37But we've seen some instances like out here in Lamoille, we had an instance where some people had been feeding deer in the past.
26:46They were no longer feeding deer, but they were putting corn out for the turkeys that were out there.
26:51The deer were coming in inadvertently in the corn, but it was also bringing lions in.
26:57And a lot of the neighbors were starting to see lions, you know, up in their hay barns and things like that.
27:02And the kids are going out to throw hay to the horses and they've got a lion 10 feet away from them up in, you know.
27:08Right.
27:09And it's like, that's, that's scary, you know.
27:11Sooner or later we're going to end up getting an attack from, you know, from that.
27:15But if I could, Mark, I'll just have you sign and date both of these worms down here.
27:21OK, so am I admitting?
27:23You're just admitting to getting the official written warning from me.
27:27OK.
27:28Well, I appreciate it, Mark.
27:29All right, Nick.
27:30Yep.
27:43He's just laying up against the fence, kind of staying out of the wind, I guess.
27:48So I just had given him a warning for, for kicking the hay out on the, on the driveway, told him not to do that anymore.
27:57If, you know, some of the hay falls out when he goes to feed his horse, that's different.
28:02He's not intentionally feeding the deer at that time.
28:05And he took it really well.
28:07He understood the reasons behind why it is that we don't want people feeding wildlife.
28:12And he understands all that stuff.
28:27We're coming up on South Park Reservoir, one of our most popular local recreation areas for fishing and boating.
28:35This time of year, our fish are starting to run like a salmon spawn, kind of.
28:42They run up the river right here, like our brown trout will come up the river and, and attempt to spawn.
28:47Some of our rainbows will still come up in here and spawn when they do.
28:51A lot of the guys who are particularly fond of fly fishing like to come to this specific spot because they can catch a lot of fish and they can catch a lot of big fish.
29:01I'm Jason Jackson. I'm a game warden. I've been a game warden in the state of Nevada for 16 years.
29:14I patrol in a northeastern corner of Elko County, outside of Elko, Nevada.
29:22I worked in mining for about nine years.
29:24Mining is very environmentally based and I've always been a hunter and involved in fishing and outdoor stuff my entire life.
29:32But seeing the mining side of it, when the mine I worked for started to become its final stage, I decided to pursue a different career.
29:42As a game warden, you don't have to spend as much time behind a desk and you get the opportunity to spend more time in the field, more time in our office, which is a four wheel drive.
29:51And it's exciting because you never know what's going to be around the next corner.
29:59I'm watching two guys fish right now. I just want to make sure that I can see them both fishing.
30:06One guy just appears to be taking pictures of stuff.
30:09If you're on the riverside, it's required that you have a single barbless hook.
30:14People who fish with a spinner, say for instance, have to cut off two of the three hooks that are on those spinners and then pinch the barb down to make it legal.
30:23The restrictions we have on the riverside are because that is a spawning area, a spawning zone.
30:28Having a good day?
30:30I think I'd have to jump in like this.
30:35Jump in just to catch a little old fish or a little old fish.
30:40I'll show you a picture.
30:41Did you see that one?
30:42I just saw the one you released, yeah.
30:44A nice fish, huh?
30:46Well, since you're taking a break, just a quick check your fishing license.
30:51What kind of fly are you using?
30:52That's a streamer.
30:54It's like a white streamer.
30:55It's barbless.
30:56Okay.
30:57That picture did it not justice.
31:00Right?
31:01Are you fishing with this guy around the corner or is he not?
31:04I'm not with him.
31:05I know he's fly fishing up there, but I met him up there in that Tacoma.
31:09Right on.
31:10Thanks, man.
31:11Appreciate it.
31:12Good luck.
31:13In this particular stop, he's doing everything right.
31:16How you doing?
31:17Not too bad.
31:18How are you?
31:19I'm doing pretty well.
31:20It just doesn't get old, does it?
31:21No, it really doesn't.
31:22This is my third one.
31:23I've been here for a fun time.
31:24Beautiful.
31:25Right on.
31:26All right.
31:27What do you want to see?
31:28Okay.
31:29Just check your fishing license.
31:30Make sure you've got a current and valid fishing license with you and check to make sure
31:41you've got a single barbless on there.
31:44Outstanding.
31:45What's the biggest one you caught today so far?
31:48This one?
31:49Right on.
31:50Not measuring them.
31:51Not weighing them.
31:52Just give them a kiss and kick them loose, huh?
31:54I'm not even kissing them.
31:55Yeah?
31:56The fish that we're seeing in here are tremendous.
31:59Size-wise, 18 to 24 is pretty average of this.
32:04A little stretch right through here.
32:06Well, I'll let you get back to catching, Jeff.
32:08Hey, thanks for doing such a great job.
32:11Appreciate it.
32:12For me, checking people who are doing the right thing the right way is just as exhilarating,
32:19I guess, than it would be to issue a citation all day long.
32:23To see these guys appreciate, number one, what we're doing as a wildlife agency, and number
32:27two, appreciate what I do as a profession and respect that makes my day.
32:33Those are not the people that I get to speak with or talk to every single day, and it just
32:38makes my job a lot easier when I deal with people like I just dealt with.
32:42And patrolling out here at South Fork Reservoir on this state park, our enforcement duties
33:00include inspection of vessels to make sure that they don't have anything that could be
33:04potentially detrimental to the environment or this reservoir specifically.
33:08Hey, stay game order.
33:09Can I talk to you guys for a second?
33:13How are you guys doing today?
33:14I'm good.
33:15Pretty good.
33:16Do you mind putting on the shore real quick, please?
33:19I just want to check and make sure you have your life jacket, okay?
33:23One there and one there.
33:25Outstanding.
33:26So you're not required to register this vessel because it does not have a motor on it, okay?
33:30Right.
33:31However...
33:32I usually do the invasive species stickers.
33:34Correct.
33:35And I don't see one on here at this time?
33:37Yeah, I usually buy...
33:39No, I think it's seven of them.
33:41If I have a Gregor, this one...
33:43Son's got another...
33:44You know about the law then?
33:46World jet skis, yeah.
33:47Okay.
33:48When's the last time this was registered, this one?
33:52I see like a 1981 sticker on there.
33:55That's probably the last time my dad had an electric motor used out in Marshall sometimes.
34:02Okay.
34:03He never used an electric motor on it, so I...
34:05Never got it registered again.
34:06Mm-hmm.
34:07Okay.
34:08So for you to put it on the water, you should have had an aquatic invasive species sticker
34:12for it?
34:13Yeah, and...
34:14Did you happen to purchase one for this year?
34:16I haven't this year.
34:17I usually do them when I do the jet ski licenses.
34:20All together and online?
34:21Okay.
34:22Do we happen to have a driver's license with you today?
34:24Yeah.
34:25Let me go ahead.
34:26I'm here.
34:27Okay.
34:28The AIS sticker majority of vessels are required to have is called our aquatic invasive species
34:33sticker.
34:34And basically, we have had over the years invasive species, such as a quagga mussel invade a lot
34:40of bordering and surrounding states as well as the southern portion of our state.
34:44So we have inspections so we can look for these types of invasive species.
34:49Just hang tight for me one second.
34:50Okay, Doyle?
34:51Reno, 2410.
34:53On Elko.
34:54Can I get a 27, 29?
34:55Nevada, when you're ready?
34:56It's gonna be a Nevada vessel.
34:57The subject, I believe, is it was last registered in, like, 1981, so it may not even show up
35:10in our system.
35:112410, 24.
35:12It is coming back to a merge.
35:1510 for Reno.
35:16I copy that.
35:17Code 4.
35:18I'll be 10-6.
35:19So our aquatic invasive species sticker that we have is designed to protect our waterways,
35:26and it's been since 1981 since he has.
35:29First things first, I'm gonna give you a driver's license and your fishing license back to you.
35:33The aquatic invasive species sticker, you obviously knew about it because you told me you have
35:37five vessels, so I probably would have just...
35:40Six or seven.
35:41Six or seven, okay.
35:42They're getting too expensive, too.
35:44They are.
35:45They're starting to go up a little bit, but they're important to have, right?
35:48There's obviously a reason that we have them, so there's a couple different violations,
35:53failed to purchase, or having an expired one, or never buying one at all, right?
35:58So I am citing you for fail to purchase a current AIS sticker.
36:03The minimum bail set by the court is $50, plus 65 administration excessive fee for $115.
36:09Serious?
36:10I am.
36:11Holy cow.
36:12It's pretty important that we...
36:15Understandably, this couldn't hold a lot of water, but the potential's always there, right?
36:18So that's why we have them.
36:19We don't have our inspection station open yet, but I gave you until the 6th of May to take care of the citations.
36:24I need more stuff down at the bottom here.
36:27Right?
36:29Well, because you don't have an AIS sticker, I can't let you go back out on the water.
36:33Are you serious?
36:35Oh, can I get one online?
36:37Yes, you can.
36:38Because I thought about that on the way out here.
36:40You can, as long as you have physical proof that you have one, and you're waiting on the paperwork.
36:45Well, sir, I'm going to let you get back to fishing.
36:48Thanks for your time.
36:49Good luck to you, huh?
36:50You're out here.
36:51I'm going to hop in and go fishing with you.
36:53So today, as far as this time of year goes, it's probably a typical day.
37:06Maybe a little bit warmer than most days this time of year.
37:10Everybody's itching to go do something right now this time of year because of the fact it's getting nice and it's 53 degrees.
37:17So it's pretty nice to have the sunshine and an enjoyable day that we had today.
37:22There's some deer in somebody's yard right over here we're going to go look at.
37:43It's just laying in the yard.
37:46You can see this, a buck and a doe right over here.
37:50I don't see any physical abnormalities that would cause me to think that that deer is injured and can't get up.
37:57So you can tell that they're really pretty domesticated to people and that goes hand in hand with the feeding of them.
38:04I pulled up here with the truck and they're just laying there looking at me like, you know, it's another day.
38:09And that's not typical deer behavior.
38:13Hey, how's it going, Audrey?
38:15Hey, so I've got a possible mountain lion sighting in the Sundance Drive area.
38:21He said it was about 150 yards from his back deck.
38:24Okay.
38:25I'll head that way here shortly.
38:28Awesome.
38:29Thanks, Vic.
38:30Yep, thank you.
38:31All right.
38:32Bye-bye.
38:33And this is exactly the type of thing that we're dealing with here with the feeding of wildlife.
38:37The lions are going to follow the deer and the deer are coming in because people were out here feeding them.
38:45It's scary because you've got little kids, you know, that are out at bus stops and we don't want to have to deal with a mountain lion attacking a kid at a bus stop.
38:53In the state of Nevada, it's illegal to feed deer.
38:56It congregates deer, brings them within closer contact with each other.
38:59So disease transmission between animals increases, brings predators down in, you know, the lions, coyotes, things like that will follow the deer around.
39:08And it just kind of creates more of a public safety problem.
39:12It's in an area that's pretty close to where I've had calls in the past for deer being fed.
39:21It's a likely place for a lion to be walking in this more natural stuff back here.
39:27But how habituated some of these, some of these things can be.
39:31They could be, you know, they could be walking right down the middle of, you know, where some of these apartments are.
39:36You can see all the snow that's on top of all these ones and that one was turned up and there wasn't any snow on top of it.
39:50So it's almost like something was brushed down through here, but I'm not seeing any tracks.
39:55It could have been through here around the time that it was snowing and all those tracks are going to be covered up now.
40:02The young juvenile that may have just got weaned off of the mom, they're going to have a track that's about that big, you know.
40:08They're not going to be super big like, you know, a big com would be, an older cat.
40:14Could be anywhere in this stuff, being this close to apartment complex, the gym, all these houses back over here.
40:22I mean, that's a huge public safety issue, you know, and it'd be nice to find this lion.
40:35A couple of spots here where it looks like could be a track, something going underneath that fence.
40:39And then there's a few old tracks out here on that road that I can see.
40:42But none of them that really look like a lion track.
40:47Lion tracks are really circular.
40:49A lot of times they walk more in a straight line.
40:51Coyotes and dogs will do that somewhat, but they'll walk a little bit more offset.
40:55The easiest way to tell a lion track is you won't find any claw marks inside the track when you're looking at it.
41:02I don't think that it's still here if it did come through, but if we get more calls on it here in the near future,
41:09then we know that we've got a problem and it's something that we're going to have to deal with pretty rapidly.
41:14We'll definitely keep this one on the radar and try to get that lion out of here.
41:19Get that lion out of here.
41:20Get that lion out of here.
41:21Get that lion out of here.
41:26Get that lion out of here.
41:43Get that lion out of here.
