00:00Freeriding has been evolving over the past years and the judging has evolved as well and it's always a
00:08constant discussion. Being a judge on the Freiburg Tour since 2008, on a calm day, looking at the
00:16riders and I have absolutely no clue what they are going to do. Judging goes non-stop for three
00:27and a half hours. It's amazing how much the sport is evolving and being on the first
00:34seat to witness that, it's such a rewarding job.
00:38I think the riders would like to see someone jumping, you know, if you can do something like this.
00:59On competition day, my job is to be a judge.
01:05Well, I'm actually a head judge and a judge as well, so coming to the venue, checking the face,
01:11knowing how many points we'll give to each features and making sure that all the judges
01:18are agreeing on that. Afterwards, prior to judging, I also take a run, one of the first strikes in the
01:26venues, but that's essential for not only the riders because I'm going to give them all the feedbacks
01:31on the snow conditions, on the type of features, but it's also something that I take on board and
01:37give to all the judges so that we really know where are the technical parts in the venue.
01:43Snow is super catchy on some places due to the fact that it's dry, but beside that, it's really, really good.
01:51When we're done validating the mountain with Lolo, we'll sit in a judging tent.
01:56And then roll on, first category and carry on judging.
02:04The judges will sit across from the face.
02:08In a place where we're going to have the best look at every possible feature or line that the riders are going to take.
02:15Unfortunately, sometimes it could be a bit sketchy to reach.
02:19We're up there about like 30 minutes hike, nearly at the top for the judges' place.
02:25And behind me over there, you can see the venue of another kind of a 50 meters to hike up.
02:34And that would give us the perfect view on the riders' line.
02:39One of the challenges as a judge is to keep warm because we will probably be not moving for about four hours.
02:46Sometimes it's minus 25.
02:48And we are in the tent, so in the shade.
02:50So we don't really see much sun.
02:53Sometimes there's wind coming in the tent as well.
02:55And if you start shivering, you can't look through binoculars.
02:59So the challenge number one is to stay warm.
03:02And then challenge number two, to stay focused.
03:05Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Fieber Bruin Pro.
03:11My name is Derek Fuse.
03:12I'm here with Freeride World Tour competitor.
03:14Hadley Hammer, ready to keep you.
03:16So in the judging stand, you've got the three judging scoring, one video judge, and a head judge.
03:22All right, well, this is our panel of judges.
03:24We have Commissioner Lolo Best standing there in the background.
03:28Laurent Gauthier from Whistler.
03:30We've got our new judge on the tour this year, Jacqueline Pollard.
03:33And Berti Denevo doing co-commissioner work.
03:35And Siobhan Chalice as the video judge today.
03:38So we are in very good hands.
03:40Those judges know exactly what they're looking for and what they're looking at.
03:43So usually we have about one minute between runs.
03:47The break of this minute goes as follows.
03:49The first 10 seconds, we say nothing and we point on our sheet of paper from 0 to 100.
03:56And the head judge is checking if all the judges are on the same point or not.
04:01Okay, so we've got two high 80s, 90s and lower 80s.
04:07I think I'd go quite high.
04:09I'm not sure we're going to see much better than that.
04:11Then we give a score and we hear the ranking.
04:15We validate the ranking.
04:17That can take a while.
04:18That's when we have discussions.
04:20Do you really think you should be behind that person or in front of that person?
04:24So we validate the ranking.
04:26We might review a couple landings, watch the replay or re-watch a run.
04:30I feel the first jump was a bit bigger.
04:33Let's check the landing.
04:35But then she was slow.
04:38She did hit the rock. Let's go.
04:40Just under it.
04:42Okay.
04:44I like your bottom section a lot more.
04:46I've got 83, 82, 85.
04:51And she's below Nadine and above Wally.
04:57Okay, send.
04:58Then after 40 seconds, the score should be in.
05:01The rider sees his score on the live.
05:04And then the live webcast is presenting the next rider.
05:07So this is about 20 seconds, the reaction, the presentation.
05:10Making sure that they hit the nail on the head as they drop the score.
05:14Because as we keep saying, underneath this, underlying all of this is the cut.
05:20We have a score.
05:21It's coming in.
05:22What's it going to be?
05:23Cody?
05:24Brema, 87.
05:25Liam, the last rider of the day, taking over first of late.
05:30A huge performance for the Swiss.
05:33During these 20 seconds, we are writing down everything that happened in the run.
05:39Everything that made our score go up or down.
05:42Mistakes, where the rider went in the face, how many jumps, the size, the tricks.
05:47We have about 20 seconds to write it all down.
05:50And usually we hear, next rider, three, two, one.
05:53That's where we drop the pin, bring up the binoculars and we're ready for the next one.
05:57Drop it!
06:01Having been a rider myself before being a judge is essential.
06:06It gives you so many insights on where it's super technical or where a rider is actually using a creative line.
06:15And I think it's essential in our job.
06:21Our job is to make sure the riders will have the best possible conditions,
06:25a safe mountain where they can express themselves.
06:29And then when we sit in the judging booth,
06:31we're going to be the number one spectators in the best sitting spot with the best binoculars.
06:36And we will do our job, but we're also big fans and will enjoy the show.
06:40That was like 40 feet.
06:42That was so much.
06:43Being a commissioner and a judge, doing the sport I love,
06:48being in the mountains, gathering, being with the middle or with friends.
06:53I don't know.
06:55I think that's the best job in the world.
07:01I forgot the other job.
07:08If you don't like an officer to help companies to makeισism.
07:10Infair Dan, I'm really proud,
07:14if anybody can buy his hands in the bag.
07:17And if you don't want to get a girl to getיף to help him.
07:18If you don't want to find a ladle,
