00:00:00Yesterday in Monza, Italy, during practice for this weekend's Italian Grand Prix, the Formula One fraternity stopped for a moment of silence and reflection on the atrocities that took place in the United States at the beginning of this week.
00:00:30But as life goes on, so does sport. And today at Monza, the 60-minute clock is now running as qualifying begins to unfold for round 15 of the Formula One World Championship.
00:00:47Looking live at Pit Lane at Monza, today, Saturday, as the first car takes to the racetrack to find his place on the grid for this weekend's race.
00:00:58Sam Posey joins me, Bob Varsha. Unfortunately, due to the air travel restrictions in place in the United States, David Hobbs and Steve Matchett have not been able to join us.
00:01:08We hope to have one or both of them before the weekend is over. For now, Sam and I will go on. This is Alex Jung, and this is remarkable.
00:01:18Not much of a start there.
00:01:20This young Malaysian, the first Malaysian driver in Formula One, got very few laps in Friday practice, got very few laps this morning.
00:01:28He has a total of seven times around this Monza circuit in his new Minardi.
00:01:33And now, we watch him park the car moments after pulling out of the pit lane, preparing for a qualifying attempt that will not happen.
00:01:42If there's one thing this man needed, it was laps on the track, and this is hard at the start that he would have hoped for.
00:01:53However, yesterday, it was interesting how many drivers did straight line those chicanes due to brake balance problems in the cool weather.
00:02:01It was only 62 degrees yesterday. It's 64 today, so it's still chilling.
00:02:06You hear an engine, someone else coming out. You saw Jung heading back to the pit lane.
00:02:14He'll have the opportunity to take his teammate's car. That, of course, would be the young Fernando Alonso from Spain.
00:02:24And now Alonso goes straight on.
00:02:27Back is truly bizarre.
00:02:30What is happening here?
00:02:32I thought it was a replay.
00:02:36Minardi's on home ground, not making much of an impression.
00:02:47They're going like, not another one.
00:02:52Because they're the only cars going out, we have plenty of time for Italian television to replay what is going on here.
00:02:59No explanations as yet. There is the Minardi garage.
00:03:04It's struggling.
00:03:06Now it appears that Alonso's car has fallen silent as well. There he is, walking away.
00:03:14What can this be happening?
00:03:17I'm very scared of business.
00:03:21I wouldn't assume some electrical failure.
00:03:23Well, as you can see, it's a beautiful day in Monza, about 10 miles to the northwest of Milan in the northern part of Italy.
00:03:31There was a heavy overnight rain.
00:03:32The track was very green this morning.
00:03:34And still, very few cars went out, only 14 drivers posted times.
00:03:39Sam, while we have an opportunity here, let's take a closer look at this legendary circuit.
00:03:43Well, Bob, it winds through a royal park that was the setting for a villa built for the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria in the late 1800s.
00:03:52It's comprised chiefly of flat-out running, lots of it, interrupted by three sets of chicanes, four turns, very, very wide.
00:04:01We're looking for a top speed, based on the practice times yesterday, of over 225 miles an hour.
00:04:07It's very tough on the brakes, the engine.
00:04:10It's a low downforce setting, and that's what led to the off-courses yesterday.
00:04:14The guys couldn't get the brake balance right, and they had to go down the escape routes.
00:04:18It's a safe track from the sense that there's plenty of runoffs in the world, everywhere around the track.
00:04:24And its reputation as a very dangerous track basically dates back into the 70s.
00:04:29It's been very much modified since then.
00:04:32It is one of the great tracks in Formula One.
00:04:35As you see, the Spearminardi being prepared for now two drivers who misused it to find their place on the grid for this weekend's race.
00:04:42There is Fernando Alonso, or perhaps Alex Young, getting a little help getting back up the pit lane.
00:04:49This isn't the section of the track where the old banking breaks away from the current road racing course.
00:04:56We built that banking, of course, as you know, Bob, back in the 1950s, thinking to kind of emulate Indianapolis.
00:05:03And they did, in fact, have Indianapolis cars run here at Monza in a couple of years, and it was spectacular.
00:05:07It was called the Race of Two Worlds, one by Jimmy Bryant with his cigar clamped firmly in his teeth.
00:05:15And it was pretty wonderful stuff.
00:05:17Ferrari built a car, and Musso drove it heroically, and Hawthorne and all the boys.
00:05:22I think Phil Hill took a turn in the thing.
00:05:24No one could hang on long enough to actually finish the racing.
00:05:27You're looking at the morning practice times from the two morning 45-minute sessions.
00:05:31There was a young driver who was deemed to be inexperienced, too inexperienced, to ride these high-speed corners at Monza.
00:05:38His name was A.J. Foyt, so they had to bring in a replacement driver.
00:05:43They found somebody by the name of Juan Manuel Fangio to take over Foyt's car for the recent two months.
00:05:49We will apologize in advance if we perhaps don't have the energy that you normally expect from a Formula One Grand Prix weekend.
00:05:56In light of all that's happened this week, perhaps it's understandable.
00:05:59We'll be back.
00:06:04SpeedVision's coverage of Formula One is sponsored by Mercedes-Benz.
00:06:09Located on the web at MBUSA.com.
00:06:12And by Bridgestone, a grip on the future.
00:06:17Welcome back live.
00:06:19The qualifying clock is ticking for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
00:06:22I'm Bob Varsha with Sam Posey.
00:06:25Welcome to the Jaguar garages.
00:06:27Pedro De La Rosa had a terrific Friday in practice.
00:06:30Eddie Irvine suffered from a rear brake bias problem.
00:06:34Car went off the track into the gravel trap, spoiling Eddie's day.
00:06:38Let's take a look at the weather conditions today.
00:06:41It's a little bit warmer.
00:06:42Looks fairly comfortable for the way people are dressed in the pit lane.
00:06:45Well, it's axiomatic that the Michelin tires do not perform as well in cold weather, but they have been doing just fine here.
00:06:55But it might erode the advantage a little bit that the Williams BMW would be seen, that would be thought to have because of its superior horsepower on this, a track which definitely requires horsepower.
00:07:10Boy, the straights are just huge.
00:07:11Is it truly sitting in the Jordan?
00:07:14No question, Sam.
00:07:15This is one of the special places in Formula One.
00:07:18Built in 1922, it has held 64 editions of the Italian Grand Prix, more than any other circuit in the world, I believe.
00:07:26It's also had 51 Italians.
00:07:29Well, all of the 51 Italian Grand Prix of the modern era, except for the 1980 race, which was held at Imola, following the tragic accident here at Monza that took the life of Ronnie Peterson the year before.
00:07:40We'll take another quick break, as long as nothing is happening on the track, and be right back.
00:07:46Got it.
00:07:49Welcome back live to Monza.
00:07:51Tomas Enghi, the first Czech driver in Formula One, replacing Luciano Berti, who suffered a severe concussion in that savage accident at the Belgian Grand Prix two weeks ago, is now on the track.
00:08:03There you see the time remaining of this one-hour session at the bottom of your screen.
00:08:07Let's go on board.
00:08:09Whoops.
00:08:11Well, that's a lot like the race Berti had two weeks ago.
00:08:14There's Fernando Alonso, who went back to the Minardi garage and is now in the spare car that was originally set up for his young teammate Alex Young.
00:08:22And now there's smoke from the back of the car.
00:08:25Minardi having the worst day of their year, which is really saying something because they've had some pretty bad days.
00:08:32Let's hope it was just a slight overkill in the oil.
00:08:37Certainly quite possible.
00:08:39Notice that they're negotiating their Lesmo curves there.
00:08:44The deep shadow and the sort of strobe effect of the light coming through the trees.
00:08:53That's the slight bend down the back straight for Curva de Cerrone.
00:09:00Now the car appears to be all right as he continues on his way.
00:09:04We'll see if he parks it in the garage or takes it out for a hot lap.
00:09:08Coming up here on Speed Vision, one of our favorite events.
00:09:10The American Le Mans Series cars at the Petit Le Mans, 10 hours or 1,000 miles.
00:09:16Whichever comes first, you will see it live.
00:09:18It's a part of our Endurance Racing Grand Slam here on Speed Vision.
00:09:21Saturday, October 6th, 11.30 a.m. Eastern to 9.30 p.m. Eastern Time.
00:09:28Clashing down the front straight, it appears that Alonzo will make a hot lap.
00:09:36That is, of course, he comes out there of the Curva Parabolica.
00:09:41Another puff of smoke as he downshifts for that first chicane.
00:09:45Once they've overfilled the oil tank or something, that's just excellent.
00:09:50That's what I expected.
00:09:51I think it might be that.
00:09:52Notice the very low downpour setup there.
00:09:54This is not encouraging.
00:09:57Notice this very small wing at the back of the car.
00:10:03All of the downpour settings.
00:10:06Way off because of an emphasis on top speed,
00:10:08which we expect, as I said earlier, to reach 225 in the case of the Williams BMWs.
00:10:15Certainly not the Minardas.
00:10:16They're going to be 10 to 15 miles an hour all-time.
00:10:18Actually, the top speed we saw yesterday was from one of the Saubers.
00:10:22Nick Heifeld, I believe, finished the day with the best trap speed,
00:10:26which comes just before the braking area for the first chicane.
00:10:31225 miles per hour.
00:10:33And that was all the more remarkable, Bob,
00:10:35because of how few laps the Saubers made,
00:10:37both of them involved with high-speed accidents.
00:10:40Eichmann as well.
00:10:42And, of course, both men very lucky to walk away
00:10:45back in action today with cars that have been fixed overnight.
00:10:49Eichmann crashed at the first chicane,
00:10:51narrowly missing one of the Minardis.
00:10:53Alex Young's car had already broken down
00:10:55and was parked by the side of the road
00:10:56while Heifeld went off at the second Lesmo corner.
00:11:07Beautiful overhead look at this circuit in a royal park.
00:11:17It's a hunting ground for Italian royalty.
00:11:20Jack has been here for some 80 years.
00:11:24And the trees.
00:11:29Some of them are 150 years old.
00:11:31All right, now we're getting a little action.
00:11:32You see the low downforce set up there,
00:11:34the sliding in the turns,
00:11:35which you would not see with, say, the Hungaro ring settings.
00:11:39This is Tomas Enghi, the provisional pole sitter
00:11:42in his first Formula One qualifying session.
00:11:46Enrique Pernaldi has thrown by the arrows out.
00:11:48By bringing it into the pits.
00:11:53He is very cognizant of the fact that
00:11:56he is carrying the Czech national flag
00:11:58here in Grand Prix Racing.
00:12:00There is a look at Fernando Alonso
00:12:02pounding the curbs,
00:12:03as you must do here at Monza
00:12:05to get good speed.
00:12:06We'll be back.
00:12:09SpeedVision's coverage of Formula One
00:12:13is sponsored by Tag Heuer,
00:12:16the official timekeeper of the Formula One Grand Prix.
00:12:19And by Cadillac,
00:12:21the fusion of design and technology.
00:12:26Welcome back.
00:12:27Another dramatic twist
00:12:28in this Formula One qualifying session
00:12:30as Enrique Pernaldi
00:12:32straight lines the first chicane.
00:12:34That's his arrows teammate,
00:12:35Jasper Stoppen, flashing by.
00:12:37Pernaldi has taken provisional points
00:12:39with a lap at 1 minute, 26.519 seconds.
00:12:43Here's a look at Bernaldi
00:12:44getting it just that little bit wrong.
00:12:47Bob, Bernaldi has broken down
00:12:48in nine of the 14 races held so far
00:12:51with the best finish of eight.
00:12:52So it has not been a great season.
00:12:54And basically what he's remembered for
00:12:56was holding up David Coulthard at Monaco.
00:12:59That was his finest hour.
00:13:01Uh-huh, so to speak.
00:13:03There's Olivier Pannis in the BAR Honda
00:13:06who had some very harsh words
00:13:08for his tire supplier, Bridgestone.
00:13:11In fact, the team principal, Craig Pollack,
00:13:12had to come forward
00:13:13and spread a little oil on the waters.
00:13:16Pannis was complaining about lack of development
00:13:18and people reading between the lines
00:13:20figured what he was actually talking about
00:13:22is the fact that Bridgestone Firestone
00:13:24seemed to be directing all of their attention
00:13:26toward Ferrari and McLaren
00:13:28paying very little attention
00:13:30to the needs of the other teams.
00:13:32Well, Ferrari is committed to Bridgestone
00:13:35for next year.
00:13:35McLaren's still on the fence.
00:13:37And so obviously Bridgestone
00:13:39is trying to court them with some attention.
00:13:42And BAR is very far down on the pecking order.
00:13:45And, you know, you wonder
00:13:46how could a tire be tuned to a particular car?
00:13:51And the answer is it's a very big connection
00:13:53between the way a suspension is designed
00:13:55and the way downforce is generated
00:13:57and the profile and the way a tire feels.
00:14:00They have to get married up.
00:14:02And if you start building a tire for Ferrari,
00:14:05it's not going to work for me.
00:14:07And we've seen it so often
00:14:08that Formula One cars can be so different
00:14:10in the way they're balanced
00:14:12and the way their suspension works.
00:14:14The cars may look similar to the untrained eye,
00:14:17but they can have extraordinary differences
00:14:18in terms of specification
00:14:20and setup differences and so forth.
00:14:23And as you mentioned, Sam,
00:14:23the tire can be a huge element in that equation
00:14:26as Bannis gets it up over the curb
00:14:28exiting the Ascari chicane.
00:14:30We're going to see a lot of that.
00:14:31You obviously have to run very wide here on the exits
00:14:34because of keeping up the speed.
00:14:35And minding,
00:14:36these are extremely long lenses.
00:14:39So concentrate on the car
00:14:43and try to picture how much terrain
00:14:46is actually going by.
00:14:47All right.
00:14:48Excellent time for Bannis,
00:14:50or not excellent,
00:14:51but for this stage of the proceedings.
00:14:53We'll take provisional pole.
00:14:55We have several cars out on track.
00:14:57Inge, Alonzo, Bannis,
00:14:58we're stopping.
00:14:58Ralph Schumacher's out right there.
00:15:01Plus one Pablo Montoya,
00:15:02Jenson Button,
00:15:03Mika Hakkinen,
00:15:04who's been making news this weekend,
00:15:05and David Coulthard,
00:15:06his McLaren teammate.
00:15:08The news that you mentioned with Hakkinen,
00:15:10of course,
00:15:11is that he is going to take
00:15:12a year off,
00:15:13a sabbatical for McLaren.
00:15:15I think it may be a euphemism
00:15:17for the fact that he's quitting,
00:15:18but there's talk that he will come back
00:15:20not next year,
00:15:22but the year after that.
00:15:23And of course,
00:15:24in the meantime,
00:15:25Kimi Raikkonen,
00:15:26another Finnish driver,
00:15:28is taking his place.
00:15:30Raikkonen to McLaren for next year,
00:15:32which I think is a sensational move
00:15:33and will doubtless make
00:15:34David Coulthard's life
00:15:36even more miserable
00:15:37because I believe that
00:15:38Raikkonen has talent
00:15:39that Coulthard does not have.
00:15:42And Coulthard will be sort of
00:15:44pushed out of the picture.
00:15:46Williams look to be sliding
00:15:48a little bit there.
00:15:49Very low downforce circuit.
00:15:51You can tell by looking
00:15:52at those rear wings,
00:15:53which are almost laid flat,
00:15:54but as I say that,
00:15:55looking at that Williams rear wing,
00:15:58it looks like they may be carrying
00:15:59a little more than others.
00:16:00Recall at Spa two weeks ago,
00:16:02they seem to have a lot more
00:16:03downforce on the car.
00:16:06At Hockenheim,
00:16:07the engine power, of course,
00:16:09allowed them to carry more wing,
00:16:10and I imagine they're doing
00:16:11exactly the same thing here,
00:16:13which is terrific for their driver
00:16:15because the car just has
00:16:17that little extra stability,
00:16:18and yet there you are
00:16:19still on the pace
00:16:20down the straightaway.
00:16:22I mean, I think in every way,
00:16:23Rolf is,
00:16:24he and Montoya
00:16:26are the favorites for the pole,
00:16:27and he is very aware,
00:16:29very terrific time,
00:16:31very, very good time.
00:16:33That compares favorably
00:16:34with Schumacher's qualifying time,
00:16:36his brothers,
00:16:36from last year,
00:16:37123-7-7-0.
00:16:40So, Rolf Schumacher
00:16:42making the first statement here
00:16:46in qualifying.
00:16:47And Montoya is quicker
00:16:48through the second intermediate.
00:16:50How much?
00:16:50I missed it.
00:16:51Two tenths.
00:16:52That's decisive.
00:16:53Almost three tenths.
00:16:54Wow.
00:16:54Wow.
00:16:57Into the parabolica,
00:16:58this long, increasing radius corner
00:17:01allows the drivers
00:17:03to upshift
00:17:04and get on the gas
00:17:05that little bit harder,
00:17:06treading the ragged edge
00:17:07of traction at the corner.
00:17:08By a half second,
00:17:10Montoya
00:17:10to the provisional pole.
00:17:14And that will bump down
00:17:15the 107% time,
00:17:17and that, of course,
00:17:18will affect
00:17:18those Minardi drivers
00:17:20at the back of the pack
00:17:21who are sharing a single car.
00:17:24The Minardi's were
00:17:25out of the...
00:17:26Oh, here's
00:17:27Mika Hakkinen
00:17:29way off the pace
00:17:30at second and a half
00:17:31is incredibly far off
00:17:33on this track.
00:17:35Quickest time
00:17:36in the morning practices.
00:17:37Michael Schumacher
00:17:38at one minute 23.178.
00:17:42Montoya
00:17:43in with a 1.22.
00:17:47Montoya,
00:17:47who was slower than Rolf
00:17:49all yesterday.
00:17:51Kimi Räikkönen
00:17:51puts the Sauber
00:17:52up into third place
00:17:53despite a huge crash
00:17:55at the first chicane
00:17:56yesterday,
00:17:57as Sam mentioned.
00:17:58Plunging off the track,
00:17:59tearing the corners
00:18:00off the car
00:18:01as he tumbled
00:18:02along the tire wall.
00:18:03How about the special?
00:18:05Here's Nick Heidfeldt.
00:18:07Relationship between
00:18:08Hockkinen and Räikkönen
00:18:10vis-Ă -vis McLaren
00:18:13and just after
00:18:14Hockkinen
00:18:14posts his time,
00:18:15Räikkönen
00:18:16comes back
00:18:16and basically says,
00:18:17I'm the new guy
00:18:18even though I'm still
00:18:19driving the other car.
00:18:23Into fourth place
00:18:24goes Heidfeldt.
00:18:25You can't underrate
00:18:26the aero package
00:18:27that the Sauber has.
00:18:29It's obviously
00:18:29extremely effective
00:18:31and they've been good
00:18:32on these high-speed tracks.
00:18:34They have Ferrari Power Course
00:18:36which is very good.
00:18:38But here's David Coulthard
00:18:40who won this race
00:18:41three or four years ago
00:18:43with a brilliant performance.
00:18:45But I think the fire
00:18:46has kind of gone out
00:18:48of the McLaren team
00:18:49this year.
00:18:50Coulthard trying to hang on
00:18:52to second in the championship.
00:18:53He leads Rubens Baracchello
00:18:55by nine points coming in.
00:18:57There's your current
00:18:57running order.
00:18:58Williams up top.
00:19:00We'll be back.
00:19:03Welcome back live
00:19:05to qualifying
00:19:06for the Italian Grand Prix
00:19:07coming up tomorrow
00:19:08here on Speed Vision.
00:19:09This is Michael Schumacher.
00:19:11Notice the Ferraris
00:19:12completely without
00:19:13commercial decals.
00:19:15Be sure to join us
00:19:16tomorrow at 7.30 a.m.
00:19:17Eastern Time.
00:19:18Peter Windsor
00:19:18has lots to tell us about.
00:19:20And tomorrow
00:19:21this is a program change.
00:19:22We will also replay
00:19:24the Italian Grand Prix
00:19:25broadcast at noon
00:19:27Eastern Time.
00:19:28That's because of the
00:19:29postponement of the
00:19:30Grand Am sports car race
00:19:32at Daytona Beach,
00:19:33Florida this weekend.
00:19:35Michael Schumacher
00:19:36quickest at the first split.
00:19:38Notice also
00:19:38the black nose
00:19:39on the Ferrari
00:19:40in honor of the victims
00:19:41of Tuesday's
00:19:43horrible situation
00:19:45in the United States.
00:19:46just went through
00:19:52and put the
00:19:52Benetton-Renaud
00:19:53into fifth
00:19:54on the provisional grid.
00:19:56Now Schumacher
00:19:57is slower than
00:19:58Juan Pablo Montoya.
00:19:59But only by
00:20:00a very little bit
00:20:01and he's getting
00:20:01a draft right now.
00:20:02This could make up
00:20:03that time
00:20:04in a split second.
00:20:06That was an excellent
00:20:07draft
00:20:09for Michael Schumacher
00:20:10who now has
00:20:11one turn to go.
00:20:12The
00:20:12verbal parabolic
00:20:14is coming up
00:20:14to the line now.
00:20:16Very good chance
00:20:17he will take the pole.
00:20:19Yep.
00:20:19And I think it can all
00:20:21be put down
00:20:21to that draft.
00:20:22That was just
00:20:23came along
00:20:23at exactly
00:20:24the right moment.
00:20:25Had to be something
00:20:26there in that
00:20:27third and final sector.
00:20:29There's Verona
00:20:29and the crew
00:20:30from Ferrari
00:20:31on the pit wall
00:20:31looking on.
00:20:32Ferrari working
00:20:33with a new spec
00:20:34engine this weekend
00:20:35and the usual set
00:20:36of new aerodynamic tweaks.
00:20:39Unfortunately
00:20:39all this really means
00:20:40is that Williams guys
00:20:41now take a little
00:20:43wing off
00:20:43and go back
00:20:44and notch it up
00:20:46another second.
00:20:47I really believe
00:20:47they have that
00:20:48kind of power.
00:20:49Whoops.
00:20:50Rubens
00:20:50Barrichello
00:20:52just did it wrong.
00:20:54As I said
00:20:54I think
00:20:5447 times
00:20:57did drivers
00:20:57straight line
00:20:58those chicanes
00:20:59yesterday
00:20:59in the two sessions.
00:21:0147 times.
00:21:02Barrichello
00:21:03has abandoned
00:21:04the hot lap
00:21:04but he is currently
00:21:05in the fourth place
00:21:06and there's a lot
00:21:07going on.
00:21:07Let's review
00:21:08Michael Schumacher
00:21:09now the provisional
00:21:10pole sitter.
00:21:11Juan Pablo Montoya
00:21:12second in the Williams.
00:21:13Ralph Schumacher
00:21:14third.
00:21:15Yarno
00:21:15truly in the Jordan
00:21:16now fourth
00:21:17bumping
00:21:17Barrichello
00:21:18to fifth.
00:21:19Here's another look
00:21:20at Barrichello's
00:21:20trip through
00:21:21the kitty litter.
00:21:22Mika Hakkinen
00:21:23shown as sixth.
00:21:24Kimi Räikkönen
00:21:25seventh.
00:21:25Giancarlo Fischichella
00:21:26eighth.
00:21:27Nick Heidfeld
00:21:28ninth.
00:21:29And Pedro
00:21:29De La Rosa
00:21:30tenth.
00:21:30Then Heinz-Herald
00:21:31Frensen
00:21:31in the frost.
00:21:32Eddie Irvine
00:21:33in the Jaguar.
00:21:33David Coulthard.
00:21:34Jack Villeneuve
00:21:35Jensen Button
00:21:36Olivier Panis
00:21:37Jasper Stoppen
00:21:38Enrique Bernoldi
00:21:39Tomas Enghi
00:21:40Fernando Alonso
00:21:42and Alex Jung.
00:21:44So 21 cars
00:21:45have posted times.
00:21:46Let me explain
00:21:47about this locking
00:21:47up of the brakes.
00:21:49When you run
00:21:50a very low
00:21:50downforce setup
00:21:52and you don't
00:21:52have the tire
00:21:53temperatures
00:21:53exactly up
00:21:54to perfect balance
00:21:56the car can get
00:21:58away from you
00:21:58so quickly
00:21:59that you just
00:22:00can't catch it.
00:22:01When that rear
00:22:02starts to come
00:22:02around and you
00:22:03don't have any
00:22:04downforce
00:22:04here we have
00:22:05Enghi
00:22:07one of the
00:22:08hosts
00:22:08Enghi's
00:22:10new to the scene
00:22:11learning
00:22:14one of the
00:22:15harsh lessons
00:22:16of Formula One
00:22:16which is that
00:22:17things go wrong
00:22:18and one of the
00:22:18harsh lessons
00:22:19of driving
00:22:19for Prost
00:22:20is they
00:22:20particularly
00:22:21go wrong
00:22:22if you're
00:22:22driving a Prost.
00:22:24All of that
00:22:25smoke or steam
00:22:26seems to be
00:22:27coming from
00:22:27the left side
00:22:27exhaust so
00:22:28I don't know
00:22:29if that got
00:22:30on the line
00:22:31there.
00:22:32I don't think
00:22:33it's going to
00:22:34affect the trap.
00:22:35I think it's
00:22:36steam rather than
00:22:37oil.
00:22:37That's what I'm
00:22:37thinking.
00:22:38Cracked the block
00:22:38and he's got
00:22:39coolant evaporating
00:22:40rapidly.
00:22:42And so Enghi
00:22:43in his first
00:22:44Grand Prix weekend
00:22:45has his first
00:22:45opportunity to
00:22:46make the long
00:22:47walk back to
00:22:48the pits.
00:22:48We're going to
00:22:49take one more
00:22:50break then we'll
00:22:51be with you to
00:22:51the checkered flag
00:22:52in this session
00:22:53so stay with us
00:22:54we'll be right
00:22:55back to
00:22:55Monza.
00:23:00Speed Vision's
00:23:01coverage of
00:23:02Formula One is

00:23:03Toyota.
00:23:04More choices,
00:23:06better selection.
00:23:07Experience Toyota
00:23:08today.
00:23:08Welcome back
00:23:12live.
00:23:12This is David
00:23:13Coulthard.
00:23:14Beginning a hot
00:23:15lap and he needs
00:23:16one.
00:23:16Currently shown
00:23:1713th on the
00:23:18provisional grid.
00:23:19While we were
00:23:19away, Ralph
00:23:20Schumacher
00:23:21improved his
00:23:22time but remains
00:23:23third in the
00:23:23order.
00:23:24Pedro De La Rosa
00:23:25in the Jaguar.
00:23:26They've got that
00:23:27qualifying package
00:23:27working much
00:23:28better now.
00:23:29He went from
00:23:3010th to 7th
00:23:31splitting Mika
00:23:32Hakkinen and
00:23:32Kimi Raikkonen.
00:23:35Jaguar needs a
00:23:36lift there.
00:23:37People have
00:23:37been working
00:23:38awfully hard
00:23:39without any
00:23:40real results.
00:23:41Their only
00:23:41podium finish
00:23:42of course was
00:23:43Monaco.
00:23:43Eddie Irvine
00:23:44third there.
00:23:47Otherwise they've
00:23:47had a miserable
00:23:48season characterized
00:23:49by upsets in
00:23:50their management
00:23:52hierarchy.
00:23:53Namely Bobby
00:23:54Rahal being
00:23:55sent back to
00:23:56the U.S.
00:23:57Coulthard using
00:23:58the full width
00:23:59of the track.
00:24:00It's obvious
00:24:00that he is very
00:24:01intent on winding
00:24:03up the season in
00:24:04second place if
00:24:05he can.
00:24:05Coulthard has
00:24:07said I have a
00:24:07lot of experience
00:24:08with fast fins so
00:24:09I should be ready
00:24:10for Raikkonen when
00:24:11he comes on board
00:24:11next year.
00:24:12I don't want to
00:24:13go any farther
00:24:13before mentioning
00:24:14that Daimler
00:24:15Chrysler and the
00:24:16McLaren team have
00:24:17done something
00:24:17phenomenal.
00:24:18They have posted
00:24:19$10 million
00:24:20toward a fund to
00:24:22benefit the
00:24:23children orphaned
00:24:25by those godless
00:24:26atrocities in the
00:24:27United States at
00:24:27the beginning of
00:24:28this week.
00:24:29So big time
00:24:30kudos to Daimler
00:24:31Chrysler and
00:24:32McLaren putting
00:24:34their money where
00:24:35their mouth is.
00:24:36So that gesture
00:24:37you wish they
00:24:38could come up
00:24:40with a little
00:24:40better time than
00:24:41that.
00:24:41They certainly
00:24:42deserve it.
00:24:43I'll certainly
00:24:43be wishing them
00:24:44the best this
00:24:45weekend at the
00:24:45Italian Grand
00:24:46Prix.
00:24:47You know it's
00:24:48hard to pinpoint
00:24:50what has let the
00:24:51air out of the
00:24:52McLaren balloon
00:24:54this year but I
00:24:56keep getting back
00:24:57to the death of
00:24:57Paul Morgan,
00:24:58Neil Moore's
00:24:59great business
00:25:00manager and
00:25:01spiritual leader
00:25:03in his airplane
00:25:05crash earlier in
00:25:06the year and I
00:25:06think that if
00:25:07anything they're
00:25:08starting to hurt
00:25:09now for horsepower
00:25:10and it shows
00:25:11badly on this
00:25:13track of all
00:25:14places where you
00:25:15need the power and
00:25:16it will show at the
00:25:16USGP in two weeks
00:25:17at Indianapolis too.
00:25:21All 22 drivers
00:25:22have posted times
00:25:23now.
00:25:24John O'Lacy with
00:25:25the Jordan team the
00:25:26last of them to do
00:25:27so.
00:25:28He took his car over
00:25:28the curbs and tore
00:25:29up the under tray
00:25:30so he needed a
00:25:31little extra repair.
00:25:33He is firmly in the
00:25:35field at this point
00:25:36and in the number
00:25:3614 spot as you
00:25:37watch Yarno Trulli
00:25:38I believe still holds
00:25:40the fastest straight
00:25:41line speed we've
00:25:42seen thus far.
00:25:44357 kilometers an
00:25:45hour, 222 miles
00:25:47per hour.
00:25:51So the retifilo
00:25:52straight away.
00:25:54Paddock off to the
00:25:55left of your screen.
00:25:56It shows you how
00:25:57enormously sophisticated
00:25:59the aerodynamics are
00:26:00on these cars because
00:26:01you wouldn't think you
00:26:02could get 220 odd miles
00:26:05an hour out of a car
00:26:07with all that stuff
00:26:08hanging off it and the
00:26:09wheels exposed.
00:26:10Off those left side
00:26:11wheels right on the
00:26:12white line at the
00:26:13outside of the
00:26:14Parabolica and truly up
00:26:16into fourth place.
00:26:18Stays fourth, excuse
00:26:19me.
00:26:19Truly.
00:26:20I'm sorry Bob, of
00:26:21course it's Italian so
00:26:22the hometown thing works
00:26:24for him here.
00:26:26Manipulated by Flavio
00:26:33Briatore in the trade.
00:26:36Juan Montoya has gone
00:26:37back to the top of the
00:26:38second intermediate.
00:26:39Let's see if he can hold
00:26:40it to the end as we
00:26:41watch Jensen button.
00:26:42Here's Montoya.
00:26:45This is a team involved
00:26:47in a lot of mergers.
00:26:49Allianz Insurance said to
00:26:51be prospecting for a
00:26:53merger in the world
00:26:54financial markets.
00:26:55Veltins, the German
00:26:56brewery that is one of
00:26:57their sponsors, has
00:26:59merged with another
00:27:00company.
00:27:01Bingo.
00:27:02Back to the top.
00:27:03Provisional pull for
00:27:04Juan Pablo Montoya.
00:27:06I should also mention
00:27:07Compact Computers, their
00:27:08main sponsor, has a big
00:27:09merger going on with HP
00:27:10right now.
00:27:12This is Barrichello in the
00:27:13Ferrari.
00:27:15Barrichello qualified second
00:27:17last year behind Michael.
00:27:19They were really on top of
00:27:20their form.
00:27:21This is where Michael
00:27:22Schumacher's big string of
00:27:24successes began that led
00:27:26him to the championship and
00:27:28then off to a terrific head
00:27:29start this year.
00:27:31Barrichello was part of that.
00:27:32Oh, Alex Jung is outside the
00:27:39107% limit.
00:27:42Listen to my math on that
00:27:43one.
00:27:43By one-tenth of a second,
00:27:46the young Malaysian.
00:27:48Have to find a little bit of
00:27:49speed if he can get in the
00:27:50car.
00:27:51Now, the spare was set up for
00:27:53him.
00:27:53They changed it over so Alonso
00:27:55went out first.
00:27:55I'm not quite sure why the
00:27:57European minority team did
00:27:58that.
00:27:58If it was set up for Jung,
00:28:00send him out, then to
00:28:01switch it over once,
00:28:02assuming Jung was safely in
00:28:04the field, and send your
00:28:05other driver, Alonso, out.
00:28:06Instead, they changed it over
00:28:08for Alonso, had to change
00:28:09it back for Jung.
00:28:12Fabulous shot.
00:28:14Ferrari, of course, with no
00:28:16decals whatsoever, and the
00:28:19black nose, which I assume
00:28:22is unpainted carbon fiber.
00:28:24So, by giving up the decals
00:28:26and not painting the nose,
00:28:27they've saved some weight.
00:28:29But it's not, of course,
00:28:30why they did it.
00:28:31It's not, of course.
00:28:32Barrichello, quicker than
00:28:34Michael through the second
00:28:34split.
00:28:35Michael was able to gain
00:28:36time, but as you pointed
00:28:37out, Sam, he did have that
00:28:38draft from Pizzicela's
00:28:39Benetton.
00:28:40Let's see what the Brazilian
00:28:41can do.
00:28:43Nope.
00:28:43Third.
00:28:44Bumping around Schumacher.
00:28:45Very good time.
00:28:46Yeah.
00:28:47Very good effort out of
00:28:49Rubens Barrichello.
00:28:51Oh, you wonder, now that
00:28:52Michael has the all-time
00:28:54race number, races one,
00:28:57the lead in that category,
00:28:58having ousted Alain Prost at
00:29:01Spa two weeks ago, whether
00:29:03it may be, they might smile
00:29:05on Rubens, help him to a
00:29:08race win here in the last
00:29:10three races of the year.
00:29:12Probably not.
00:29:13There's Luca
00:29:14Montezemolo, head of Ferrari.
00:29:16This is Giancarlo Fizzicela
00:29:18running back.
00:29:18His Benetton Renault has
00:29:20stranded him out on course.
00:29:23Not quite sure where that is.
00:29:26Down in the Parabolica.
00:29:27So the pit lane is dead
00:29:29ahead of him.
00:29:31The spare is set up for him.
00:29:34Fizzicela currently shown...
00:29:36Oh, he's got some work to do.
00:29:41Fizzicela is 11th at the moment.
00:29:45I have to go back for more
00:29:46speed reading.
00:29:49Fizzicela showed pretty good
00:29:51foot there, didn't he?
00:29:52Of course, not as good as
00:29:53Gianna Trulli, who actually ran
00:29:54the New York Marathon last year.
00:29:57These guys are fit.
00:29:58Well, very low body weight,
00:30:01of course.
00:30:02You know, body fat.
00:30:08Yeah, cardiovascular fitness
00:30:10is crucial in automobile
00:30:12racing where your heart rate
00:30:14roughly triples when you're
00:30:15in action.
00:30:17Combination of the excitement,
00:30:20which sounds like you think
00:30:21you'd get used to, but you
00:30:22never really do.
00:30:22You get really pumped up
00:30:24driving a racing car.
00:30:25And the physical effort,
00:30:26which is not inconsiderable.
00:30:29You can still see damp patches.
00:30:31As I mentioned, there was
00:30:31overnight rain, and these
00:30:32ancient trees come right up
00:30:34behind the arm coast, so they
00:30:36tend to overshadow the
00:30:38racetrack early in the day,
00:30:39and they keep that moisture
00:30:40on the track.
00:30:41Here it's bright sunshine,
00:30:42and obviously bone dry.
00:30:45Hockenden split still off
00:30:46Coulthard's time.
00:30:48Just think back what a
00:30:50difference a year makes.
00:30:51Back a year ago, Hockenden
00:30:52came in here.
00:30:54A couple of points, as I recall,
00:30:55ahead of Michael Schumacher
00:30:56in the championship.
00:30:57Fresh off his brilliant win
00:30:59at Spa.
00:31:01That's disappointing.
00:31:02Look at that.
00:31:02It's a second and a half
00:31:03off Montoya.
00:31:04Yep.
00:31:07And now the talk, well, the
00:31:10deal is he's having his last
00:31:12three races.
00:31:13This is Heinz-Harald Frensen in
00:31:15the Prost.
00:31:16You mentioned that this is a
00:31:19home race for a lot of the
00:31:20teams up and down the pit lane.
00:31:21You should also note it is the
00:31:22last European race of the
00:31:24season.
00:31:25This is very much a send-off for
00:31:27the Formula One Circus before
00:31:28it heads for Indianapolis or the
00:31:30U.S. Grand Prix in two weeks'
00:31:32time, and after that, the Japanese
00:31:34Grand Prix at Suzuka to wind up the
00:31:36season.
00:31:37Heinz-Harald Frensen remains 13th,
00:31:39but improves his time to 1.9 seconds
00:31:42behind Juan Pablo Montoya's current
00:31:44provisional pole.
00:31:51They have adjusted and redesigned and
00:31:53bust with these chicanes until I think
00:31:55they've got them about as good as you
00:31:57can get them right now.
00:31:58I think they're safe, they do the job
00:32:01very well.
00:32:03Juan Pablo eyeing the times, of course
00:32:08himself, on top, where he likes to be.
00:32:12Ooh, Frensen got it wrong.
00:32:16I was just looking down at the timing
00:32:18screens.
00:32:19Frensen has used nine of his allowable
00:32:2112 laps in this qualifying session.
00:32:24Most of the other drivers have used six,
00:32:26possibly seven.
00:32:27Boy, boy, whoa.
00:32:30Lucky to bring that back under control.
00:32:32He just went for the brakes.
00:32:34Montoya, of course, was on the pole two
00:32:36weeks ago at Spa, but he grabbed it only
00:32:38at the last, on the last lap, under the
00:32:41most incredibly exciting circumstances.
00:32:44There was just one tiny dry line available
00:32:48up Eau Rouge, and he put his foot in it,
00:32:52and the timing traps say that he was 12 miles
00:32:56an hour, faster than anyone else, through
00:32:58the most difficult turn in racing.
00:33:00That's incredible.
00:33:02Nobody's kidding.
00:33:04Jasper's stopping, struggling with his car,
00:33:06as he has all weekend.
00:33:08That's Michael Schumacher.
00:33:11You should point out, also, Montoya knows this
00:33:13track only from testing.
00:33:14He never raced at this track.
00:33:16But he does have that new FWB version of the
00:33:21Williams chassis this weekend.
00:33:22At Belgium two weeks ago, Schumacher had one,
00:33:25the only one the team had.
00:33:27Now Montoya has one as well, and appears to be
00:33:29using it to this possible effect.
00:33:33Michael, in front of his home crowd.
00:33:36He had not won the championship for Ferrari
00:33:40at this point in the season last year.
00:33:42He had to clinch it.
00:33:43And, of course, he has already clinched it this year.
00:33:48So he comes back here, basically, with two championships
00:33:51in his bag for the crowd to enjoy.
00:33:57But I don't know if things will go his way this week
00:34:01when he begins to be a better new power
00:34:04to carry the day.
00:34:08Montoya looking more competent, and he's certainly overdue.
00:34:12I think the battles between Montoya and Raikkonen
00:34:15are going to be the feature, possibly,
00:34:17of the next era of racing.
00:34:19The era I think we see coming to a conclusion right now
00:34:22is the era in which McLaren was gradually displaced
00:34:26by Ferrari, and Schumacher finally emerged
00:34:30at the top of his form to take, basically,
00:34:33all the significant records.
00:34:35But that can't go wrong.
00:34:41Phil Hill said it perfectly in a discussion I had with him
00:34:45a couple of weeks ago.
00:34:46He said, you reach a glass ceiling.
00:34:48Here comes Michael.
00:34:49Remember, he improved in this third sector
00:34:51on his previous lap.
00:34:52He needs a little improvement.
00:34:54No, he stays second.
00:34:57122.658 is an improvement on his previous best lap
00:35:01by a couple of hundredths of a second.
00:35:05Michael still has a chance to break
00:35:07the single-season record for victories.
00:35:10He has eight at the moment.
00:35:12The record is nine.
00:35:13He himself has done it twice.
00:35:15Nigel Mansell did it in 92,
00:35:16but he'll have to win both this weekend
00:35:18and one of the next two races
00:35:22at Indianapolis and Suzuka
00:35:24to take sole possession.
00:35:28Now, this is a big, big lap right here.
00:35:32Let's see.
00:35:34Fourteen minutes to go to the end of the session.
00:35:37Rolf has presumably trimmed this beauty out.
00:35:41This is the third of a possible four
00:35:44sets of hot laps for Ralph Schumacher.
00:35:47Next one, Pablo Montoya.
00:35:5222-4 is the time that Ralph is shooting for.
00:35:59And now we're taking the Montoya line.
00:36:05Well, Jean Alessi has just bumped up
00:36:07the fastest speed through the traps
00:36:09at 223 miles per hour.
00:36:12Montoya off in the first sector.
00:36:20The idea of going 223 miles an hour
00:36:23in one of these cars.
00:36:24I heard Jeff Gordon recently on television
00:36:26talking about how you see
00:36:27the Winston Cup cars on television.
00:36:29When you get up close to them in person,
00:36:31you realize how much smaller they really are
00:36:33than they look on TV.
00:36:34I think that's also valid for Formula One cars.
00:36:37When you stand next to one of these machines,
00:36:39you realize how small and narrow
00:36:41and low to the ground it is.
00:36:42The idea of laying down in one of these cars
00:36:45and going 223
00:36:46is not every man's idea of a lot of fun.
00:36:50Here comes Ralph.
00:36:51Ah, very disappointing.
00:36:52That pretty much puts paid to his hopes
00:36:57for the pole position.
00:36:59He should have one more shot at it.
00:37:00One more shot in about 12 minutes.
00:37:02He's got plenty of time.
00:37:04Montoya goes quicker.
00:37:05Whoa!
00:37:06Okay, Ralph, you can't reach it.
00:37:07How about if I just raise the bar a little bit?
00:37:09That's unbelievable.
00:37:10Two tenths.
00:37:12After his bad first sector,
00:37:14Montoya, unbelievable superiority.
00:37:17What a swing in fate for Schumacher and Montoya
00:37:22on that exchange.
00:37:24I think basically the season on the Williams team
00:37:28has been the story of Montoya's talent
00:37:30and Ralph's experience
00:37:33and frankly, good fortune.
00:37:35He's been a little lucky.
00:37:36Well, as soon as Juan Pablo Montoya
00:37:38takes his first race win,
00:37:40one will assume he'll start winning regularly.
00:37:42Frank Williams has to be sitting pretty right now.
00:37:44It's like Fernando Alonso
00:37:47taking the Minardi down a familiar road.
00:37:49They could rename that part of the racetrack
00:37:51for the Minardi team this weekend.
00:37:52They've got so many cars parked down there.
00:37:56Now keep in mind, Jensen Button
00:37:57still is contractually bound to the Williams team.
00:38:01Imagine how he feels
00:38:02watching Montoya grab poles
00:38:04and Ralph Schumacher picking up wins.
00:38:06You know, he may not feel all that badly, Bob,
00:38:08because his contract has been picked up by Benetton,
00:38:12which is going to become
00:38:14the Renault official team next year.
00:38:17And I think based on Fischichella's performance
00:38:19two weeks ago at Spa,
00:38:21they have a huge future
00:38:22to play in the organization.
00:38:25David Coulthard has now improved to sixth.
00:38:29Moving up one spot, Nick Heidfeld, seventh.
00:38:33Checking Rubens' Botteichello splits.
00:38:35He was quicker than Michael
00:38:36for the second intermediate.
00:38:38Is he too far back to get a tow
00:38:39from those cars ahead of him on Redefilo?
00:38:41Yes, that's the poor guy too.
00:38:51Let's see if Rubens can pick up
00:38:53a couple of hundreds.
00:38:54Yes.
00:38:54Yes, into second.
00:38:55Wow, Rubens.
00:38:5822-5, beating Schumacher by a tenth.
00:39:01I don't think the track itself
00:39:03is getting faster, do you, Bob?
00:39:05But anything, it was 64 degrees Fahrenheit
00:39:08when he started.
00:39:09It's maybe a little bit more
00:39:10which would drop the power.
00:39:12I don't think they lay down
00:39:13much of a groove here.
00:39:15I think it's that they're becoming
00:39:18less and less cautious with their setup.
00:39:21I mean, in other words,
00:39:22they're trimming the car out more and more,
00:39:24getting more top speed.
00:39:27Checking with the press room,
00:39:28the track temperature has actually
00:39:29gone down by a degree.
00:39:31Oh, well, maybe that, well, no,
00:39:33a degree would have been a good one.
00:39:35I don't think.
00:39:41It's a beautiful setting
00:39:42for a race.
00:39:44Wonderful spot.
00:39:46You see that dip there,
00:39:47that's where they go,
00:39:48that big bridge in the background
00:39:50is where the old bank track
00:39:51goes over.
00:39:52It's not in use anymore.
00:39:54In fact, it's all cracked
00:39:55and sort of fallen apart.
00:39:57which makes it even more romantic.
00:39:59Yeah.
00:39:59If you ever get a chance to go,
00:40:01of course, I've said before,
00:40:02I'm a big fan of racetracks,
00:40:04whether there's a race going on or not.
00:40:06And this is another one
00:40:07where you can just go
00:40:08and feel the history.
00:40:10And drive the lap
00:40:11if you want.
00:40:12Paying some lira.
00:40:15Take a look.
00:40:18So, let's reassess.
00:40:20The current order is
00:40:21Montoya, Barichello,
00:40:23Michael Schumacher,
00:40:24Ralph Schumacher,
00:40:25then Yarno Trulli
00:40:26and David Coulthard,
00:40:27Nick Heidfeld
00:40:28and Mika Hakkinen,
00:40:29Kimi Raikkonen
00:40:30up into ninth,
00:40:31Pedro De La Rosa tenth,
00:40:32Eddie Irvine,
00:40:33De La Rosa's teammate,
00:40:34and Jenson Button
00:40:35provisionally on row six,
00:40:37Giancarlo Fisichella
00:40:38and Heinz-Herald Frensen
00:40:39on seven,
00:40:40John O'Lacy
00:40:40up into the number 15 spot
00:40:42alongside Jacques Villeneuve,
00:40:45Olivier Pettis
00:40:46and Jasper Stoppen,
00:40:47Enrique Bernoldi
00:40:48and Tomas Enghi,
00:40:50and then the Minardis
00:40:52of Alonso and Jung.
00:40:53Without the distractions
00:40:56of the sponsor words
00:40:59on the cars,
00:41:00it's remarkable
00:41:00how handsome
00:41:02that Ferrari is
00:41:03and how intricate
00:41:03all the forms
00:41:05of its body
00:41:05and barge boards
00:41:09and scoops
00:41:10and wings
00:41:11and it's a remarkable
00:41:12object.
00:41:13This is Villeneuve,
00:41:20currently 16th.
00:41:22He'll be looking
00:41:22for an improvement.
00:41:23He's been having
00:41:24another one of those
00:41:24weekends.
00:41:26His teammate
00:41:27has been ahead of him.
00:41:28Actually,
00:41:28Pettis is one spot
00:41:29behind him
00:41:29on the provisional order
00:41:30right now.
00:41:32But this team,
00:41:33earlier in the season,
00:41:34was complaining
00:41:35about their lack
00:41:36of handling
00:41:36on low downforce tracks.
00:41:38Certainly appears
00:41:39to have lost their way
00:41:40a bit everywhere.
00:41:41We're saying
00:41:41every change
00:41:42they throw at the car
00:41:44does nothing
00:41:45to help them.
00:41:46Villeneuve,
00:41:47however,
00:41:47for his credit,
00:41:48is driving
00:41:48a simple,
00:41:50superb lap
00:41:50right now.
00:41:52His negotiation
00:41:54of the chicanes
00:41:55and then Lesmo
00:41:55just couldn't be
00:41:57any neater.
00:41:58move a dip.
00:42:03Now the escarge
00:42:04she came
00:42:05and then out
00:42:05down this very long
00:42:07back straight
00:42:07into the curve
00:42:08of Parabolica
00:42:09where Jochen Rint
00:42:11was killed
00:42:12in 1970.
00:42:15However,
00:42:16at that point
00:42:16amassed enough
00:42:17points that he won
00:42:19the championship
00:42:19anyway.
00:42:21Costumously,
00:42:22the only time
00:42:22that's ever been done.
00:42:25Villeneuve will
00:42:26throw the lap.
00:42:27He was quoted
00:42:28recently
00:42:29in a team
00:42:30video news release
00:42:31of all things
00:42:32as saying
00:42:32I'm basically
00:42:33just looking ahead
00:42:34to next year.
00:42:35The car just
00:42:35will not work.
00:42:37Michael Schumacher
00:42:39has to be
00:42:40scratching his head
00:42:40under that
00:42:41very, very
00:42:42expensive helmet
00:42:43he wears.
00:42:44here we go.
00:42:49And this man
00:42:49will be watching
00:42:50closely.
00:42:51He's going to
00:42:51concentrate on that.
00:42:53Michael Schumacher
00:42:54has two more
00:42:55shots at pole
00:42:55including this one.
00:42:57Montoya has
00:42:57one bullet left
00:42:59with which to answer.
00:43:00Rubens Barichello
00:43:01has also done
00:43:02nine laps.
00:43:03Ralph Schumacher
00:43:03has done nine.
00:43:05You know,
00:43:06you use the word
00:43:07bullet there.
00:43:07It really is a shootout
00:43:09isn't it?
00:43:09It's great fun
00:43:12to watch.
00:43:12You draw your
00:43:13gun and then
00:43:14I go out
00:43:15and draw mine.
00:43:16But you have to
00:43:16have two or more
00:43:17guys really on
00:43:18their game
00:43:19so that you have
00:43:19that tit for tat.
00:43:20Michael apparently
00:43:23not in the hunt
00:43:26there.
00:43:26Almost four
00:43:27tenths off
00:43:27in the first
00:43:28track.
00:43:28Well off over
00:43:29the curbs there.
00:43:30That's not like
00:43:31him.
00:43:32And there as
00:43:32well.
00:43:36That is
00:43:37de rigueur
00:43:37to take that
00:43:38second Lesmo
00:43:39that wide
00:43:40though.
00:43:40It's got to be
00:43:41an extraordinary
00:43:41feeling to be
00:43:42right over the
00:43:43whole rumble
00:43:44strip like that.
00:43:45Still three
00:43:50tenths down
00:43:51at the second
00:43:52intermediate.
00:43:52This is where
00:43:53he picked up
00:43:53time before
00:43:54but he doesn't
00:43:54have that
00:43:55toe.
00:44:03Ride the
00:44:04outside of the
00:44:05road the whole
00:44:06way around the
00:44:07latter part of
00:44:08that turn.
00:44:09Here we come to
00:44:09the time.
00:44:10Nope.
00:44:12Interesting
00:44:12though he
00:44:13loses very
00:44:15time in the
00:44:16first sector.
00:44:17Holds even in
00:44:18the second and
00:44:19then loses just
00:44:20a tiny bit more
00:44:21in the last
00:44:22one.
00:44:22It's a very
00:44:22busy first sector
00:44:24here at Monza
00:44:24with two big
00:44:25chicanes.
00:44:25Michael Schumacher
00:44:26improves his
00:44:27time but remains
00:44:28third.
00:44:29He and his
00:44:30brother have
00:44:31been very vocal
00:44:32about the fact
00:44:33that they don't
00:44:33think we should
00:44:34be racing this
00:44:35weekend.
00:44:35They have
00:44:36serious concerns
00:44:37about coming to
00:44:37the United States
00:44:38in two weeks
00:44:39which tells you
00:44:40a lot about
00:44:41what events
00:44:43such as we've
00:44:44seen this week
00:44:45can do.
00:44:47I'll tell you
00:44:47selfishly I'm
00:44:48glad they are
00:44:49racing.
00:44:50It's great to
00:44:50have honestly
00:44:51something else
00:44:52to think about
00:44:53get excited
00:44:53about the
00:44:57power of
00:44:57distraction.
00:45:00I'm wondering
00:45:00if Michael
00:45:01Schumacher's head
00:45:02is quite fully
00:45:04into his work
00:45:04this weekend.
00:45:06Well I think
00:45:06it would be
00:45:08when he's at
00:45:09the wheel.
00:45:09You can't drive
00:45:10one of these
00:45:11things and not
00:45:11have your mind
00:45:12110% on it.
00:45:13This is
00:45:14Engie crawling
00:45:15to a stop
00:45:16for the second
00:45:17time today.
00:45:19Another new
00:45:20Grand Prix
00:45:21experience for
00:45:21the Czech
00:45:22driver.
00:45:22He's been
00:45:22through two
00:45:23cars.
00:45:25It appears
00:45:26once again
00:45:26the engine
00:45:27has let him
00:45:27down.
00:45:30Hockinen.
00:45:32Wow.
00:45:33That's a heavy
00:45:33hit.
00:45:35The wheel
00:45:35missing.
00:45:36Left side
00:45:36destroyed.
00:45:37Red flag.
00:45:40Red flag
00:45:40with just a
00:45:41few minutes
00:45:41to go in
00:45:42the session.
00:45:46Looks to be
00:45:47on the run
00:45:48down from
00:45:48Lesmos.
00:45:50Yeah, that's
00:45:51one of the
00:45:51very few places
00:45:52on the track
00:45:53where the
00:45:53things are
00:45:54very...
00:45:54He did take
00:45:55that so wide
00:45:56that's a
00:45:56driver error
00:45:57for sure.
00:45:57Oh, shoot.
00:45:58Straight in.
00:46:00That's a hit.
00:46:01He got out of
00:46:04balance there
00:46:04on the exit
00:46:05as you can
00:46:06see.
00:46:07And that's
00:46:08just what
00:46:08we've been
00:46:09watching.
00:46:09The drivers
00:46:10taking that
00:46:11turn so
00:46:12wide that it
00:46:14gets very
00:46:14tricky right
00:46:15at the end.
00:46:15Look at the
00:46:16wheel still...
00:46:17Left front
00:46:18came off
00:46:18immediately.
00:46:19There's
00:46:19Hockinen.
00:46:20Because he
00:46:21did spear
00:46:21right in.
00:46:22You know,
00:46:22I think
00:46:22Luciano
00:46:23Berti's
00:46:24crash at
00:46:24Spa two
00:46:25weeks ago.
00:46:26Everyone
00:46:26very keenly
00:46:27looking on
00:46:28at McLaren.
00:46:29This team
00:46:30very much
00:46:31behind Mika
00:46:32Hockinen who
00:46:33may have lost
00:46:33the edge
00:46:34this year,
00:46:35but he's
00:46:36done such
00:46:36wonderful things
00:46:37for this team
00:46:38and he's
00:46:38very popular
00:46:39on the team.
00:46:40But Berti's
00:46:41crash, I
00:46:43think, was
00:46:44phenomenal in
00:46:45that he was
00:46:46able to get
00:46:47away with it.
00:46:49And I think
00:46:49everybody is
00:46:50very pleased
00:46:50with the
00:46:51development of
00:46:52the safety
00:46:53aspects of
00:46:54the car
00:46:55construction in
00:46:56Formula One.
00:46:57There's
00:46:57Engie's car
00:46:58pulling to a
00:46:59stop.
00:46:59There is the
00:47:00wreckage of
00:47:01Hockinen's car.
00:47:02Looks like he
00:47:02might have hit.
00:47:03I said
00:47:03straight in.
00:47:04Looks like he
00:47:04might have
00:47:04hit left
00:47:05front first,
00:47:06which helps a
00:47:07bit.
00:47:07I think you're
00:47:08right.
00:47:08It was misleading.
00:47:09I thought it was
00:47:09straight in, too.
00:47:11The left front
00:47:12of the nose is
00:47:12damaged.
00:47:13The left front
00:47:13corner torn off,
00:47:14so that certainly
00:47:16helped dissipate
00:47:17energy.
00:47:17As Hockinen
00:47:18looks down.
00:47:19See, this is
00:47:21where the mental
00:47:23aspect of this
00:47:24game is so
00:47:25critical, because
00:47:26a couple of
00:47:27years ago,
00:47:28Mika would have
00:47:29been making that
00:47:29run for the pole,
00:47:30not for sixth
00:47:32or seventh
00:47:32or fourth
00:47:33conceivably.
00:47:35And when you
00:47:35know you're
00:47:36going for the
00:47:37pole, you
00:47:37have this, I
00:47:38hate to use the
00:47:39phrase, but a
00:47:39sort of savage
00:47:40joy in you.
00:47:42It's an incredible
00:47:43rush when you
00:47:44know you're going
00:47:45for the pole that
00:47:46can somehow keep
00:47:49you on the road
00:47:51through things that
00:47:51otherwise couldn't
00:47:52be.
00:47:53Well, we've talked
00:47:54about that before.
00:47:55A little positive
00:47:55reinforcement never
00:47:57hurts.
00:47:57Whether you're a
00:47:57driver in the car
00:47:58or a mechanic in
00:47:59the garage at two
00:48:00in the morning
00:48:01fixing something, if
00:48:02you know that the
00:48:03guy who's going to
00:48:03get in that car the
00:48:04next day is going
00:48:05to get every
00:48:06possible tenth.
00:48:06Give it that big
00:48:06ride.
00:48:09And then you get
00:48:10down and you're
00:48:11used to running for
00:48:11the pole, and now
00:48:12you're running for
00:48:13fifth place, and
00:48:14you're trying probably
00:48:16harder than you have,
00:48:17but you don't have
00:48:17that joy, and the
00:48:19equation somehow
00:48:20suddenly gets away
00:48:21from you.
00:48:22You see a white
00:48:23area looking onto
00:48:24the pits, hacking
00:48:24and getting into
00:48:25the medical chase
00:48:26car.
00:48:27The man in the blue
00:48:28baseball game, yeah,
00:48:29that's Professor
00:48:30Sid Watkins, a
00:48:31prominent British
00:48:31neurosurgeon who is
00:48:34the official
00:48:34traveling doctor of
00:48:36Formula One.
00:48:37He's a fascinating
00:48:38story in his own
00:48:39right.
00:48:40Here's a man who
00:48:40has devoted the
00:48:42latter part of his
00:48:43professional adult
00:48:44life to working
00:48:44with Formula One.
00:48:46Ron Dennis looks
00:48:47on.
00:48:48I mean, Watkins,
00:48:49driver after driver
00:48:51has said that one
00:48:51of the most
00:48:52comforting things
00:48:52that can happen.
00:48:53If you have to
00:48:53have a crash, it's
00:48:54opening your eyes
00:48:55and seeing Professor
00:48:57Watkins looking in.
00:49:02Nice applause for
00:49:03Mika Hakkinen as he
00:49:04makes his way around,
00:49:05no doubt waving out
00:49:06the window.
00:49:07We'll take this
00:49:08opportunity for a
00:49:09quick break.
00:49:10About four minutes to
00:49:11go in the session.
00:49:12We're under the red
00:49:12flag.
00:49:13Stay with us.
00:49:13Welcome back.
00:49:24Live still under the
00:49:25red flag, but there
00:49:26you see the medical
00:49:27car coming down the
00:49:28pit lane.
00:49:28Mika Hakkinen has
00:49:29just been dropped off
00:49:30at the McLaren
00:49:31garage, so apparently
00:49:33he is in good shape
00:49:35and ready to go
00:49:36again.
00:49:36There is the
00:49:37accident scene.
00:49:38His car went over
00:49:39the curbs into the
00:49:40gravel and then speared
00:49:42off to the left into
00:49:43the wall.
00:49:44Left front corner
00:49:45first, ripping off the
00:49:46left front wheel.
00:49:48Hakkinen climbed out
00:49:49okay.
00:49:50I imagine he would
00:49:51very much like to
00:49:52have a couple of
00:49:53laps in a backup car
00:49:54if it can be organized
00:49:55with the time remaining.
00:49:57Well, he's out of
00:49:58laps.
00:49:58That was his 11th lap
00:49:59he was on, so he
00:50:00has one more.
00:50:01He can go out and
00:50:01drive around if he
00:50:02just wants to make
00:50:03sure he remembers
00:50:03where the steering
00:50:04wheel is and so
00:50:04forth.
00:50:07He could go out and
00:50:08give his teammate a
00:50:09tow.
00:50:09David Coulthard is
00:50:10currently in sixth
00:50:11spot.
00:50:11Hakkinen seventh.
00:50:13So they could
00:50:14arrange.
00:50:14Well, no.
00:50:15No, actually he
00:50:16couldn't help it.
00:50:17They couldn't, no.
00:50:17Because he wouldn't
00:50:18be able to go a
00:50:19warm-up lap and then
00:50:20give a tow.
00:50:22Well, it appears that
00:50:24the Finns day is
00:50:25over.
00:50:26And quite possibly his
00:50:28career basically has
00:50:29just two, well, three
00:50:31races including this
00:50:32one to run.
00:50:34That's going to be
00:50:34tough.
00:50:35Very few drivers have
00:50:36ever taken what he's
00:50:38calling a sabbatical
00:50:39and come back to be
00:50:40competitive or have
00:50:41come back at all
00:50:42really.
00:50:45I can't think of a
00:50:47single successful
00:50:48comeback from a year
00:50:50away.
00:50:50What you need to be a
00:50:51driver is a youthful
00:50:53ambition, a flame
00:50:54inside of you that
00:50:55keeps burning.
00:50:56A sense of your own
00:50:56immortality.
00:50:57Yeah.
00:50:58And I think if you ever
00:50:59step away from it, you
00:51:00lose something of that.
00:51:02The momentum is lost.
00:51:03If you become a
00:51:04reasoning adult human
00:51:06being along the way,
00:51:09you probably can't do
00:51:11what these guys do.
00:51:12They would like to hear
00:51:13that.
00:51:13Mika certainly had his share
00:51:16of big accidents over the
00:51:17years.
00:51:18Of course, there was a
00:51:19massive one in Adelaide.
00:51:21He had a big one this
00:51:21year at the season opener
00:51:23in Australia.
00:51:25And he has spoken a lot
00:51:27about wanting to spend
00:51:28more time with his young
00:51:29son, Hugo.
00:51:29So perhaps fatherhood has
00:51:31contributed to his sense
00:51:32of perspective as well.
00:51:34He's talking about going
00:51:35away and coming back.
00:51:36If he does come back, he
00:51:37would be 34 years, going
00:51:38on 35 years old.
00:51:40You saw Luca Montezemolo
00:51:42there, of course, the head
00:51:44of Ferrari in the old
00:51:45days when Enzo was head
00:51:47of Ferrari.
00:51:48This is the only race that
00:51:49he attended.
00:51:51And he didn't actually come
00:51:52for the race.
00:51:52He just came for practice.
00:51:53Otherwise, he stayed back
00:51:55in the factory and got the
00:51:56news over the telephone.
00:51:58In those days, it would, of
00:51:59course, be email or
00:52:01something more
00:52:02electronic these days.
00:52:03He'd be paged.
00:52:04Paged.
00:52:07Rubens Barichello
00:52:08studying the time lists.
00:52:09He is currently second to
00:52:11Juan Pablo Montoya.
00:52:13Take another break and be
00:52:14back.
00:52:14There's your current top six.
00:52:16Stay with us for more
00:52:17from Monza.
00:52:21Welcome back.
00:52:22You're looking live at
00:52:23Monza, Italy.
00:52:24About 90 seconds, we
00:52:26believe, from the restart
00:52:27with about four minutes to
00:52:28go in this 60-minute
00:52:29qualifying session.
00:52:30And it's interesting to
00:52:32note that the top six
00:52:33drivers in the current
00:52:34provisional order, Montoya,
00:52:36Barichello, both Schumachers,
00:52:38Yarno Trulli and David
00:52:39Coulthard, each have one
00:52:41hot lap.
00:52:42Hot lap.
00:52:44Children, don't try this at
00:52:45home.
00:52:45I'm a trained professional.
00:52:46Well, one of those left.
00:52:48Hot lap.
00:52:48They can each take one more
00:52:49shot at pole.
00:52:51And it'll be interesting to
00:52:52see if all six go out
00:52:53together.
00:52:53They're certainly going to be
00:52:57on the racetrack at the same
00:52:59time.
00:53:00And I think the guy with the
00:53:01most to gain from this is
00:53:02Rolf Schumacher.
00:53:03He's the furthest out.
00:53:05He's underperformed,
00:53:07underachieved, the way the
00:53:09others have not.
00:53:10McLaren mechanics running
00:53:14down to the end of the pit
00:53:15lane to pick up the wreckage
00:53:17of Mika Hakkinen's car.
00:53:19Hakkinen is locked in in
00:53:22seventh right now, but he
00:53:23could fall further back.
00:53:26Going back to 13th place,
00:53:28Jensen Button and Giancarlo
00:53:30Fisichella both have laps
00:53:31remaining.
00:53:33As does Jean Alessi, Jacques
00:53:34Villeneuve, Olivier Panis.
00:53:38Good look at Hakkinen of work.
00:53:40Ralph Schumacher at work
00:53:46over the same part of the
00:53:47track.
00:53:49David Coulthard on tape.
00:53:52Green flag coming.
00:53:53The cars are queuing up at
00:53:54the end of the pit lane.
00:53:58You can hear from the
00:53:59engines that the cars are
00:54:00heading back out.
00:54:02Here we go.
00:54:04That was a nice piece of
00:54:05video showing that when you
00:54:07go over the chicanes,
00:54:08there's a significant period
00:54:11of time, milliseconds, but
00:54:12in the driver's life, a
00:54:14significant period of time
00:54:15where the car is basically
00:54:16semi-airborne and out of
00:54:18steering control.
00:54:19Okay, interesting situation
00:54:20here.
00:54:20You've got Jarno Trulli in
00:54:21fifth.
00:54:22His Jordan teammate,
00:54:23John Alessi, is 15th.
00:54:25He sends somebody out to
00:54:26give somebody else a tow,
00:54:27and if so, who helps whom?
00:54:28He's a penis.
00:54:36Here comes Villeneuve.
00:54:39Of course, you can always get
00:54:40a tow from somebody else out
00:54:41there, as long as you're not
00:54:43the first dog on the sled.
00:54:45It's a Lacey, so he is out
00:54:52ahead of Trulli.
00:55:04Three minutes to go.
00:55:05We were going to see this
00:55:17anyway.
00:55:17It hasn't really changed
00:55:19anything very much.
00:55:21They all had, as you pointed
00:55:22out, Bob, one run to go,
00:55:25and it was going to come down.
00:55:29But there is a certain
00:55:30compactness to that group of
00:55:32cars out there.
00:55:34These are all of the slower
00:55:36guys, except Trulli.
00:55:40Cars we'll be looking for
00:55:41are Montoya, Barrichello,
00:55:43both Schumachers, and David
00:55:45Coulthard.
00:55:49You can tell fall is in the
00:55:51air.
00:55:51A lot of jackets up and down
00:55:52the pit lane.
00:55:53It's been very cool in
00:55:56northern Italy.
00:55:59Here's Barrichello.
00:56:03Barrichello with his very
00:56:06impressive qualifying time.
00:56:13Metal hot lap for the
00:56:15Brazilian.
00:56:17Lacey.
00:56:20He's too bad.
00:56:23You can see, though, that was
00:56:24the Hail Mary lap right there.
00:56:26He left that breaking.
00:56:28You could just see how it was.
00:56:30I hope you would make it.
00:56:33Now Michael Schumacher begins his
00:56:35final attempt.
00:56:37By the way, you're slowing the
00:56:39car for that first chicane from
00:56:41220 miles an hour to about 65.
00:56:46That's a tremendous cut in speed,
00:56:49and you try to do it at the exact
00:56:51last instant.
00:56:53Traveling at that speed a half an
00:56:56instant is too much to wait.
00:56:59That's what Rubens did.
00:57:00He waited a half an instant too
00:57:02much.
00:57:02Let me see that broken down in
00:57:04milliseconds.
00:57:07People getting out of the way.
00:57:09Schumacher into the Lesmos.
00:57:12Three tenths quicker than his
00:57:14previous best at the point, but
00:57:15well over the curbs.
00:57:17That's where Hackenden had his
00:57:18problem.
00:57:20See how much he lost.
00:57:22Second intermediate, four tenths over
00:57:27Montoya.
00:57:31Slower than Barrichello as well.
00:57:36And no draft opportunity.
00:57:38Salvers ducking out of the way.
00:57:40I believe that's one of the
00:57:41Williams cars rushing towards us.
00:57:43It is Ralph.
00:57:45It is Ralph Schumacher working on
00:57:48his last chance for the poll.
00:57:53I don't think he's got it.
00:57:56Well, did I speak too soon?
00:57:57No, you didn't.
00:57:58Your instincts were right.
00:58:00He's been disappointing today, has
00:58:01Ralph?
00:58:04Here comes the checkered flag to end
00:58:06the session.
00:58:07Looks like he's keeping his foot in
00:58:09it.
00:58:09Well, he did get over the line
00:58:12to do this lap.
00:58:13Montoya's last effort.
00:58:16Nope.
00:58:17But very close.
00:58:18Very consistent.
00:58:19Very consistent.
00:58:20That means he has the two fastest
00:58:22laps.
00:58:23Am I right?
00:58:23Fifty-five thousandths of a second.
00:58:25Well, second quick is Barrichello,
00:58:27who's three tenths behind.
00:58:28So yes, when Pablo Montoya
00:58:29comprehensively the fastest man on
00:58:32the track.
00:58:34Look at Ralph Schumacher working
00:58:36the curbs.
00:58:37Does Ralph have the lap?
00:58:39Left.
00:58:40No, he doesn't.
00:58:41No, he doesn't.
00:58:42So he's done.
00:58:46Look at Barrichello's problems.
00:58:49Just that little bit too aggressive
00:58:51on the brakes at the first chicane.
00:58:54Left it just too late.
00:58:56Now, yesterday, this man with the flag
00:58:59was also simultaneously on his cell
00:59:01phone.
00:59:02I wonder if somebody whispered a word
00:59:04to him about...
00:59:07Michael Schumacher in the garages.
00:59:09The qualifying is done.
00:59:12Juan Pablo Montoya picks up the pole
00:59:14in what is arguably the biggest race
00:59:17of the Formula One calendar.
00:59:19Certainly one of the biggest on the
00:59:20European continent, along with Monaco.
00:59:22And he will endear himself to the Tufosi.
00:59:32Off to a great start to the weekend.
00:59:34We'll take a quick break and come back.
00:59:36We'll have interviews coming up, so stay with us.
00:59:38My favorite ad.
00:59:42Welcome back.
00:59:46Italian television posting side-by-side laps.
00:59:50Barrichello and Schumacher, of course,
00:59:52all of this ignoring the fact that the pole
00:59:54has gone to Juan Pablo Montoya.
00:59:57Montoya, his third of the season,
01:00:00and he is becoming quite the fast-track specialist,
01:00:03as you see Montoya in action on tape right there.
01:00:06His third pole of the year,
01:00:07the other two coming at Hockenheim and Spa.
01:00:09Which means he's had the pole
01:00:11in three out of the last four races.
01:00:14And also, he's decisively outperformed his teammate here.
01:00:18The Ferrari's splitting him.
01:00:20I mean, without his virtuosity at the wheel,
01:00:23the Williams BMW, which was so highly touted for this race,
01:00:26would not be on the pole.
01:00:28It would be a Ferrari.
01:00:29It was just Montoya's lock on the situation.
01:00:33When you consider he's never raced here,
01:00:35only practiced here, it's all the more impressive.
01:00:37Highlight package from Italian television.
01:00:39Showing you the struggles of the Minardi team.
01:00:41Both cars losing power
01:00:45before they had made a single turn of a single lap.
01:00:50That was a very weird start to the session.
01:00:55For a split second there,
01:00:57it cost, I think, both of our minds, Bob,
01:00:59that it might be some sort of a gesture.
01:01:01A protest or something.
01:01:03But obviously, it was a gesture protest from the engine.
01:01:06Both Alonso and Jung made the field,
01:01:11despite having to share the spare car.
01:01:15Problems for Tomas Enghi,
01:01:16who took two different cross chassis out
01:01:19and both let him down.
01:01:21By the way, that's a very impressive performance by Minardi,
01:01:24that they managed to get both their
01:01:25really quite inexperienced drivers into the race.
01:01:29Good example of teamwork, for sure.
01:01:30In one car.
01:01:33And as you see,
01:01:34there's been plenty of sliding around.
01:01:37Most of it fomented by riding over these curbs,
01:01:40which you have to do here at Monza
01:01:41to get the ultimate lap.
01:01:46That is a real test of driver skill,
01:01:48to be able to pound over those things,
01:01:50momentarily breaking that aerodynamic bond
01:01:53with the racetrack.
01:01:55And it's no fun, either.
01:01:57No driver likes to brutalize the car like that.
01:02:02It's not satisfactory.
01:02:04Then, of course,
01:02:06it makes it going a little...
01:02:07Speaking of brutalizing the car,
01:02:10say that carriage is pretty far.
01:02:12Well, nothing like sliding out of control
01:02:14at 100 miles an hour sideways.
01:02:17I mean, not to put too fine a point on it,
01:02:19but that would have been a fatal accident
01:02:21just 10 years ago.
01:02:22No question.
01:02:23To spear off the road virtually headfirst
01:02:25at prodigious speed out of the Lesbos.
01:02:27Nicky Lauda made that point this weekend
01:02:29about Luciano Berti's big crash at Spa two weeks ago.
01:02:33Just a few short years ago,
01:02:34it would have been much more serious
01:02:35than a simple concussion.
01:02:38Formula One has made progress
01:02:40on all sorts of fronts.
01:02:41You can fault them for being too politically driven,
01:02:45for Bernie Ecclestone being a dictator and so forth,
01:02:49but you can't fault the progress
01:02:51that has been made technically
01:02:52in terms of the performance of the cars
01:02:55and in particular the safety.
01:02:56Welcome to the top three qualifying drivers
01:02:58for the Italian Grand Prix 2001.
01:02:59It's Juan Pablo Montoya,
01:03:01Rubens Barrichello,
01:03:01and Michael Schumacher.
01:03:03Juan Pablo, many congratulations.
01:03:04Your third pole of the season.
01:03:06And you went quicker and quicker
01:03:07all through the session.
01:03:08Was that your perfect qualifying?
01:03:10No, you know,
01:03:11the car was really good.
01:03:12We worked a lot this morning
01:03:13to try to make it better and better.
01:03:15We knew that in the morning
01:03:16we were not going to be that competitive
01:03:17because it was very cold.
01:03:19As the temperature came up,
01:03:21you know,
01:03:21we'd become stronger and stronger.
01:03:23And, you know,
01:03:23the car was really good.
01:03:24We didn't do, you know,
01:03:25we only adjusted the front wing
01:03:27a little bit through qualifying.
01:03:29And that was about it.
01:03:30I think there was a bit more time there,
01:03:32so I was very pleased with that.
01:03:34Thanks and well done.
01:03:35Rubens,
01:03:35it's the first time this year
01:03:36you've managed to out-qualify, Michael.
01:03:37It's a great platform for you
01:03:39to go for second
01:03:39in the championship tomorrow.
01:03:41Well, but altogether,
01:03:42I don't think it means a lot
01:03:44because, you know,
01:03:45there is a long race ahead.
01:03:47I think, you know,
01:03:48I had a really good car today.
01:03:50I had all the support that I needed.
01:03:53I think Monza is very special
01:03:55with all the T4Z
01:03:56and I'm happy to be having
01:03:59a good time in qualifying
01:04:01and hopefully in the race.
01:04:02Thank you, Rubens.
01:04:03Michael,
01:04:04individual sectors today
01:04:05were very good,
01:04:06but I think it's fair to say
01:04:07you found it difficult
01:04:07to string together the perfect lap.
01:04:08In the important run,
01:04:12certainly there was
01:04:13a mistake inside.
01:04:15That was the third last run
01:04:16in the first sector
01:04:18and that killed
01:04:19the overall lap time,
01:04:21but that's the way it is
01:04:22sometimes in qualifying.
01:04:23You can't always do
01:04:24things very well.
01:04:26Obviously,
01:04:27I was trying to go
01:04:29for the pole position,
01:04:30so the only way
01:04:31to get that time
01:04:31was pushing very hard
01:04:33and may overdo it.
01:04:36Michael, thank you.
01:04:37one third time on pole.
01:04:39What do you have to do tomorrow
01:04:40to make it third time lucky
01:04:41and your first win?
01:04:42I think it's going to be hard
01:04:43and I've always been
01:04:45really consistently quick
01:04:46throughout the weekend as well,
01:04:48so I think it's going to be
01:04:49quite interesting race.
01:04:51I think the basic start
01:04:53is try to have a clean start
01:04:56and we'll go from there.
01:04:58Gentlemen, thank you.
01:04:58Can we have a word
01:04:59from each of you now
01:04:59in your own language
01:05:00starting with one Pablo?
01:05:02I'm very happy.
01:05:03This is the third
01:05:03because I'm going to do this year.
01:05:04The car is working very, very, very well.
01:05:06Well, as Juan Pablo Montoya
01:05:08lapses into his native Spanish notice,
01:05:10that black armband
01:05:11that he is wearing
01:05:12in the Williams team gesture.
01:05:14A few of what's happened this week.
01:05:15You notice also
01:05:16that the Ferrari drivers
01:05:17are not wearing decals
01:05:19on their overalls.
01:05:20In fact, Michael Schumacher
01:05:21is not wearing his overalls at all.
01:05:23Michael Schumacher
01:05:23appears to come straight
01:05:24from the golf course,
01:05:25not the race car.
01:05:28So Juan Pablo Montoya
01:05:30has his third pole of the year
01:05:31and this man, Rubens Barichello,
01:05:33outqualified his teammate
01:05:34the world champion
01:05:35for the first time this season.
01:05:40Welcome back.
01:05:41Be sure to join us tomorrow
01:05:42for our Speed Vision coverage
01:05:44of round 15
01:05:44of the world championship.
01:05:46The Italian Grand Prix
01:05:47from Monza
01:05:47will begin at 7.30 a.m.
01:05:49Eastern time.
01:05:50Peter Windsor
01:05:51will be bringing us
01:05:51the paddock stories
01:05:52including reaction
01:05:53to the events
01:05:54of the past week
01:05:54and more on
01:05:55Mika Hakkinen's
01:05:56imminent retirement
01:05:57or sabbatical.
01:05:59And of course,
01:06:00we will replay
01:06:00the race at noon.
01:06:02We'll be back.
01:06:02Welcome back to Monza.
01:06:09Let's take a lap
01:06:10of this circuit
01:06:10with Giancarlo Fisichella.
01:06:13This is Fisichella
01:06:15at turn one
01:06:16which is his second gear
01:06:17chicane
01:06:18and accelerating
01:06:19out of this
01:06:20into the Curva Grande
01:06:22which is flat out.
01:06:23We won't hear him
01:06:24back off
01:06:24through here.
01:06:25He gets up
01:06:26into top gear
01:06:28of sixth gear.
01:06:29And now we get
01:06:31into the second
01:06:32series of chicanes.
01:06:33Again,
01:06:34a second gear
01:06:34situation.
01:06:36He will not use
01:06:37second gear again
01:06:38through the rest
01:06:38of the track now
01:06:39as he heads
01:06:40toward the Lesmos
01:06:41which is the far
01:06:42end of the track
01:06:43away from the pits.
01:06:45There were two turns
01:06:45linked together
01:06:46by this relatively
01:06:47short straight.
01:06:48This is where
01:06:48Hakkinen
01:06:49became a proper
01:06:50on the exit.
01:06:51over 200 miles
01:06:57an hour.
01:06:59Now a turn
01:07:00to the Iolone
01:07:01and then a chicane.
01:07:06A fast one.
01:07:07A very fast one
01:07:08leading out
01:07:08onto this
01:07:09very long
01:07:10back stretch.
01:07:11One turn to go
01:07:12to Curva Parabolica.
01:07:14A very fast turn.
01:07:17Fourth gear.
01:07:19You hear him
01:07:19go down
01:07:19a couple of gears
01:07:20there.
01:07:21Coming out
01:07:22now exit speed
01:07:23all important
01:07:23with this very
01:07:24fast turn ahead.
01:07:25So that is
01:07:26one fast lap
01:07:27around Monza.
